The authors found in 1750 abdominal ultrasonograms 424 (24%) findings which were not related to the original purpose of the sonogram or to the actual disease and of which neither the treating physician nor the patient was aware. The most frequent findings were those of the kidney (147 patients), gallbladder/gallstones (99 cases) and of the liver (85 patients). The incidence of the unexpected findings increased with the patient's age. Most of the alterations were of benign nature, but some of them (21 cases) influenced the patient's further treatment.
