The evaluation of water sorption and solubility is pivotal for the development of new resin-based restorative materials with the potential for clinical application. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the influence of the specimen dimension, water immersion protocol, and surface roughness on the water sorption and solubility of three resin-based restorative materials. Disk-shaped specimens of 15 mm × 1 mm, 10 mm × 1 mm, and 6 mm × 1 mm were produced with a composite resin (Z100), a resin cement (RelyX ARC), and an adhesive system (Single Bond 2-SB2). The specimens were immersed in distilled water according to four protocols: ISO (all the specimens for each group were vertically immersed in 50 mL); IV-10 (the specimens were individually and vertically immersed in 10 mL); IH-10 (the specimens were individually and horizontally immersed in 10 mL); and IH-2 (the specimens were individually and horizontally immersed in 2 mL). The surface roughness (Sa and Sp) was evaluated using an atomic force microscope, and the degree of conversion was determined using FT-IR spectrometry. The specimen dimension and water immersion protocol had no effect on water sorption and solubility. For the three resin-based restorative materials, Sp was higher than Sa. The degree of conversion was not influenced by the specimen dimension. The variations in the specimen dimension and water immersion protocol compared to those determined by ISO 4049 did not prevent the comparison between the values of water sorption and solubility obtained for a given resin-based restorative material.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of cycling whitening toothpaste with cigarette smoking (WTCS) on the evolution of roughness, color, translucency, and gloss of microfilled, microhybrid, and nanofilled resin composites. METHODS: 15 specimens of Durafill - DVS, Empress Direct - ED, and Z350 - FZ were divided into three groups according to the toothpastes:: conventional, control group, (Colgate - C) and Whitening (Colgate Luminous White - CW and Oral B 3D White - OW) and roughness, color, translucency, and gloss were evaluated before and after the specimens were submitted to WTCS for 8 weeks. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA, 3-way repeated measures ANOVA, and Tukey HSD post hoc test (α= 0.05). RESULTS: Only ED and FZ brushed with CW and FZ brushed with C presented an increase in roughness after WTCS. The three composites suffered a significant color alteration after WTCS. Excepting DVS brushed with CW, all the other groups presented a significant reduction in translucency after WTCS. DVS was the only resin composite that maintained its gloss stability after WTCS. Whitening toothpastes behaved similarly to conventional (control) toothpaste regarding the evolution of roughness and optical stability of the three resin composites. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Whitening toothpastes were not capable of maintaining the color stability of the three resin composites after 8 weeks of toothpastes-cigarette smoking cycling.

We evaluated the effects of dentine biomodification after pre-treatment with two sulphonamide carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAIs) of the N-[4-sulphamoylphenethylcarbamoyl]benzenesulphonamide type, investigating matrix metalloproteases activity, resin-dentine micro tensile bond strength, dentine surface wettability, and antimicrobial activities. Ninety-five sound-extracted human molars were selected for the study. Inhibitory effects were evaluated by gelatinase and collagenase activity tests and collagen degradation FT-IR spectroscopic analysis. Pre-treatment with the two CAIs kept the micro tensile values after 12 months of storage (32.23 ± 5.95) and cariogenic challenge (34.13 ± 2.71) similar to the initial, pre-treatment values (33.56 ± 4.34). A decreased Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation on dentine surfaces and antibacterial activity against planktonic bacteria were observed after CAI treatment. Dentine pre-treatment with sulphonamide CAIs maintained adhesion strength stability, allowed better dentine wettability, maintained matrix collagen, and showed anti-S. mutans activity.

OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to compare the in vitro cytocompatibility of two etch-and-rinse (Adper Scothbond, Optibond) and two self-etch (Clearfill SE Bond and Single Bond Universal) dental adhesives through a dentin-barrier model with human pulp fibroblasts. METHODS: Human fibroblasts were placed on a plastic device containing 500µm human dentin discs treated with each adhesive or without treatment (control). Other groups were directly exposed to media conditioned with adhesive samples according to ISO 10993-5:2009. After 24h exposure, cell viability was assessed by XTT, and released inflammatory mediators were detected with a multiparametric immunoassay. RESULTS: The standardized test without barrier indicated both etch-and-rinse adhesives and self-etch as cytotoxic, promoting viabilities under 70% of the control group (p<0.05). The dentin-barrier model identified increased cell viability for self-etch adhesives, with Clearfill SE Bond identified as non-cytotoxic. The immunoassay evidenced high rates of cytokines by cells exposed to the conditioned media of Adper Scotchbond, Optibond S, and Single Bond Universal. CONCLUSIONS: The use of a dentin-barrier in vitro model detected a better biocompatibility for self-etching adhesives and, in the case of Clearfill SE Bond, with a reversion from cytotoxic to biocompatible when compared to the indirect standardized test. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The use of a dentin-barrier in vitro model was able to detect a better biocompatibility for self-etching adhesives when compared to the indirect standardized test and presents itself as a predictive in vitro method for assessing the cytotoxicity of dental restorative materials that may simulate the clinical condition more accurately.

This study aimed at evaluating the influence of glass-fiber post (GFP) relining with composites of different opacities on resin cement layer thickness (CLT), bond strength (BS) to root dentin, and resin cement degree of conversion (DC%). Standardized roots of 52 bovine incisors had their canals prepared and were distributed into 4 groups (n = 10 for CLT and BS; n = 3 for DC%) according to the post used: WP3 (Control)-Whitepost DC3; groups DE, EN and TR-Whitepost DC0.5 relined, respectively, with dentin, enamel, and translucent shade composites. After cementation, specimens were sectioned into six 1.0 mm-thick discs that were submitted to push-out BS test. CLT and failure pattern were evaluated using a stereomicroscope and DC% by micro-Raman spectroscopy. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α = 0.05). The control group showed greater CLT than all relined groups (p < 0.05), which did not differ from each other (p > 0.05). Groups relined with low opacity composites (TR; EN) showed the highest BS and DC% means (p < 0.05). BS was not different among root thirds (p > 0.05), while DC% decreased from cervical to apical third (p < 0.05). Adhesive failures between cement and dentin were predominant, except for group DE with frequent mixed failures. It could be concluded that composite opacity did not influence CLT, which was thinner when GFP were relined and that relining GFP with lower opacity composites led to higher BS and DC%.

Dental composites are aesthetic materials widely used in Dentistry for replacing hard dental tissues lost due to caries or traumas. The aim of this study was to fabricate low-shrinkage dental composite charged with nanoclay fillers (montmorillonite Cloisite®-MMT) and evaluate their cytotoxicity and physicomechanical properties. Four dental composites were produced from the same organic matrix: Bis-GMA/TEGDMA (30 wt.%). The filler system was constituted of BaSi, SiO2, and MMT in the following concentrations (wt.%): 93.8/6.2/0, 89.1/5.9/5, 86.7/5.8/7.5, and 84.4/5.6/10 (E0: 0; E5: 5%; E7.5: 7.5%; E10: 10% of MMT nanoclays). The following properties were tested: in vitro cytotoxicity, flexural strength, elastic modulus, volumetric shrinkage, water sorption, water solubility, and hygroscopic expansion. Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize composites' topography. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post hoc test (p < 0.05). MMT nanoclays did not affect the cytotoxicity. E5 and E7.5 groups showed a significant decrease in polymerization shrinkage while maintained the overall physicomechanical properties. The inclusion of 5 and 7.5 wt.% of MMT nanoclays allowed the fabrication of dental composites with low cytotoxicity and low polymerization shrinkage, without jeopardizing the overall behaviour of their physicomechanical properties (flexural strength, elastic modulus, water sorption, water solubility, and hygroscopic expansion). These aspects suggest that the usage of MMT nanoclays could be an effective strategy to formulate new dental composites with clinical applicability.

This study compared the ultrastructure, chemical composition, and proteases activity (PA) of sound (SD) and caries-affected dentin (CAD) in the dentin hybrid layer after using an experimental bonding system containing pyromellitic dianhydride glycerol methacrylate and biomimetic analogs. The bonding system used a three step and a total-etch procedure. Polyacrylic acid (5%) and sodium trimetaphosphate (5%) were added to the primer and monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (9%), beta-tricalcium phosphate (10.5%), and calcium hydroxide (0.5%) were added to the adhesive. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to evaluate the resultant structure, particularly the adhesive-dentin and the demineralized-SD interfaces. The chemical composition was evaluated through energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The PA was measured with the Coomassie Blue-G250 coloring test, and the PA data were analyzed by ANOVA. EDS identified the presence of isolated calcium phosphate nanoparticles in the demineralized region; however, the SAED analysis did not show any evidences of hydroxyapatite (HA) neoformation in SD and CAD. The biomimetic analog-based adhesive system inhibited the activities of dentin proteases immediately after treatment. Additionally, the proteolytic activity on the affected dentin resembled that of the SD. In conclusion, no HA formed in the demineralized SD and CAD although there were calcium and phosphate deposits. The experimental adhesive system inhibited dentin proteases. The present study uses a new approach to investigate the hybrid layer behavior in dentin. The experimental adhesive system was synthesized and used on sound and affected-caries dentin as the substrate to reproduce real clinical conditions.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the degree of conversion (DC%), water sorption (Sp), solubility (Sl), dentin bond strength (µTBS) (immediate and after 12 months of storage), and the antibacterial effect of an experimental adhesive containing different concentrations (%) of proanthocyanidin (PA): 0, 1%, 2%, 4.5%, and 6% (PA0, PA1%, PA2%, PA4.5% and PA6%, respectively). MATERIALS AND METHODS: DC% was measured by FT-IR and the Sp and Sl were determined based on the ISO 4049 specification. For µTBS, resin composite buildups were constructed incrementally and specimens (n = 8) were sectioned to obtain sticks (1 mm2). The µTBS was evaluated after 24 h and 12 months of water storage at 37°C. The failure mode was analyzed. The antibacterial effects were evaluated by analyzing the bacterial growth (S. mutans) (n = 5) and antibiofilm activity (n = 5) of the adhesives by spectrophotometry. RESULTS: The incorporation of PA did not affect the Sp, Sl, or DC%. Immediate µTBS was similar for all groups. After 12 months, PA4.5% presented significantly higher µTBS than PA0, while the other groups did not differ from PA0 and PA4.5%. Groups PA0 and PA1% underwent significant reduction in µTBS. In the experimental groups PA2%, PA4.5% and PA6%, µTBS was maintained after storage. All groups showed antibacterial activity. CONCLUSION: Incorporation of 2%, 4.5%, and 6% PA maintained the dentin µTBS after 12-month storage, without affecting the Sp, Sl, or DC% of experimental adhesives. PA4.5% presented higher µTBS values than PA0 after 12 months. The adhesive presented antibacterial effect irrespective of PA concentration.

OBJECTIVES: To synthesize and evaluate the enamel remineralizing potential of dental composites containing silanized silica-hydroxyapatite (Si-HAp) nanoporous particles charged with sodium fluoride (NaF). METHODS: Si-HAp particles were synthesized using a solid-state method. Dental composites were prepared by incorporating 70 wt.% of Si-HAp particles into a 70/30 wt.% Bis-GMA/TEGDMA organic matrix. Four dental composites were produced: SilF, Sil, F, and NT (nontreated). For SilF and F, Si-HAp particles were previously treated with 10% NaF (F). Afterwards, SilF and Sil composites had their particles silanized (Sil) with α-methacryloxypropyl-1-trimethoxysilane (α-MPS). The remineralizing potential was evaluated in caries-like enamel lesions induced byS. mutans biofilm for seven days and after pH-cycling for fifteen days using X-ray microtomography (micro-CT). Z350 was used as a commercial control for remineralizing potential evaluation Degree of conversion (DC%), flexural strength (FS), and Knoop hardness (KHN) were characterized. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post-hoc test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: F presented the highest enamel remineralizing potential, followed by SilF. Alternatively, Sil and NT were not capable of totally recovering the enamel mineral loss. NT showed the highest DC%, followed by Sil, F, and SilF. Sil and NT showed the highest FS when compared to SilF and F. No statistical significance in KHN was found among the composites. CONCLUSIONS: Dental composites with Si-HAp nanoporous particles charged with NaF presented a remineralizing potential for human enamel. However, this ability underwent a subtle reduction after particle silanization. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Si-HAp nanoporous particles charged with NaF may be an alternative for producing dental composites with an improved remineralizing potential for enamel affected by caries.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the microshear bond strength (µSBS) to deep (DD) or superficial (SD) dentin (µSBS) overtime, nanoleakage (AG%), degree of conversion (DC%), water sorption (WSp), and solubility (WSl) of an adhesive system [Adper Single Bond 2(ASB)] containing matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) inhibitors [GM1489 (ASB-GM), Batimastat (ASB-BAT), or Chlorhexidine diacetate (ASB-CHX)]. ASB without inhibitor was used as control (CONTROL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: WSp and WSL were calculated based on ISO4049. DC% was analyzed using FT-IR spectroscopy. Dentin discs were used for µSBS evaluation. For AG%, resin-dentin beams were analyzed under scanning electronic microscopy. Data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA (AG% and µSBS) or ANOVA (DC%, WSp, WSl) and Tukey's HSD test. RESULTS: ASB-CHX presented the lowest DC%, lowest WSp, and highest WSl. ASB-GM reached the highest immediate µSBS in SD, only different from ASB-CHX. In DD, ASB-BAT and ASB-GM had the highest µSBS, statistically different from ASB-CHX. After twelve months, ASB-GM and ASB-BAT presented higher µSBS in SD when compared to CONTROL and ASB-CHX. In DD, ASB-GM reached the highest value, which was statistically different from CONTROL and ASB-CHX. CONTROL at both dentin depths and ASB-CHX at DD did not maintain bond stability. In SD after 12 months, ASB-BAT and ASB-GM decreased AG%. In DD, only ASB-GM reduced AG%. CONCLUSION: The ASB containing Batimastat and GM1489 maintained resin-dentin bond stability after 12 months for both dentin depths, without jeopardizing WSp, WSl, or DC% of the adhesive system. The ASB-GM presented greater µSBS after 12 months when compared with ASB. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Batimastat and GM1489 could be suitable for inclusion as an MMP-inhibitor into Single Bond to improve the bond stability to superficial and deep dentin, without jeopardize the physic-mechanical proprieties.

This study aimed at evaluating the use of biological dentin post (BDP), achieved by milling bovine root, through the analyses of mechanical and optical properties. BDPs were compared to a glass fiber post (GFP) in the following tests (n = 10): a) elastic modulus (E) and flexural resistance (σ) by three point bending test; b) fracture resistance (FR) by compressive load at 45° and failure pattern; c) light transmitting (LT) ability and their influence on the resin cement's degree of conversion (DC%); d) bond strength (BS) by push-out test and failure pattern. Bovine teeth were decoronated and root length was standardized at 14 mm. The canals were prepared and irrigated with 2.5% NaOCl. GFP's surface was conditioned by 1 min immersion in 24% H2O2 solution before silanization. After root embedment, the root canal walls and the BDP's surface were hybridized (H3PO4 37% + self-cured adhesive) for FR and DC% analyses. Posts were fixed into the root canals using a conventional dual resin cement. For BS test, both posts were luted using the conventional and the self-adhesive cementation. A universal testing machine (EMIC DL2000; 1 mm/min) was employed for the mechanical tests (E, σ, FR and BS). For the LT analysis, opaque polyethylene discs were transfixed by the posts, leaving 10 mm of the posts' apical section for measurements. Posts' cervical portion was irradiated (800 mW/cm2) and a spectrometer recorded the number of photons transmitted to previously chosen lateral post regions and at the apical tip. The resin cement DC% was evaluated in several sites of the cement film. After normal distribution were checked (Shapiro-Wilk test), data were submitted to ANOVA (5%) and Scheffe post-hoc test (5%). Results showed that: a) E: BDP > GFP; b) σ: BDP < GFP; c) RF: BDP < GFP; d) LT could not be observed for BDP. For GFPs, the greatest number of photons was observed at the post apical tip. An exponential decay was observed from the cervical to the apical post region; e) resin cement DC% was statistically similar at all points of measurements for both posts; and, f) BS: BDP = GFP, regardless the adhesive protocol used. It was concluded that: a) teeth restored with BDP exhibited lower fracture resistance than those restored with GFP; b) resin cement DC% was not influenced by the light transmitting ability of the post; c) the retention provided by the BDP was similar to the one provided by GFP, independently of the luting protocol.

The aim of this study was to characterize low-shrinkage dental composites containing methacrylethyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (ME-POSS). Four experimental composites were manufactured, two of which contained organic matrixes of BisGMA-TEGDMA (70/30 wt% - BGC) and BisEMA-TEGDMA (80/20 wt% - BEC). The two other experimental composites replaced BisGMA and BisEMA with 25 wt% of ME-POSS (BGP and BEP). The composites also contained 70 wt% of 0.7 µm silanized BaBSi particles. The following properties were evaluated: Degree of conversion (DC%), volumetric polymerization shrinkage (VS%), polymerization shrinkage stress (Pss), flexural strength (FS), Flexural modulus (FM), hardness (KHN), water sorption (Wsp), water solubility (Wsl), diffusion coefficient (D), and wear. The DC% was not influenced by the presence of ME-POSS, with BEC (75.6%) and BEP (74.8%) presenting higher DC% than BGC (60.6%) and BGP (55.6%). The ME-POSS-containing composites (BGP and BEP) presented significantly lower VS% and Pss. The FS ranged from 92.7 to 142.0 MPa and the FM from 3.6 to 10.3 GPa. ME-POSS did not influence the KHN. BEC and BEP presented lower Wsp and Wsl when compared to BGC and BGP. D ranged from 1.0 × 10-6 to 7.4 × 10-6 cm2 m-1. Incorporation of ME-POSS significantly decreased the wear for both binary matrices (p < 0.05). With the exception of FS and FM for BGP, the incorporation of ME-POSS decreased the VS% and Pss without jeopardizing the other properties of the experimental dental composites.

The dental profession is still pursuing the most effective way to treat white-spot lesions in order to produce a sound and esthetically pleasing enamel surface. The aim of the present research was to evaluate in vitro the effects of a dentifrice with nanohydroxyapatite (nano-HAp) on the roughness, color, lightness, and brightness (gloss) of bovine enamel subjected to pH cycling. Twelve enamel discs prepared from bovine incisors were divided into 2 experimental groups: dentifrice with sodium fluoride (Colgate Total 12 Clean Mint) and dentifrice with nanoHAp (Megasonex). For 14 days, the specimens were subjected to 30 cycles of simulated brushing twice a day as well as to a pH cycling model (6 hours of demineralization and 18 hours of remineralization daily). The roughness, color, lightness, and brightness of all specimens were evaluated at baseline (immediately after specimen preparation) and after 7 and 14 days of treatment. A Tukey test demonstrated that there were no statistically significant differences in the effects of the dentifrices on any parameter after 7 days (P > 0.05). After 14 days, however, there was a statistically significant increase in mean roughness in the group brushed with fluoride dentifrice (P < 0.05). Thus, the nanoHAp containing dentifrice promoted less superficial roughness after 14 days, but both dentifrices were similar in relation to color variation, lightness, and brightness.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of conversion (DC%), water sorption (WS), solubility (SO), and resin-dentin bonding stability of experimental adhesive systems containing ZnCl2. Different concentrations (wt.%) of ZnCl2 were added to a model etch-and-rinse adhesive system consisting of BISGMA, HEMA, UDMA, GDMA, water, and ethanol: Zn0 (0%-control group); Zn2 (2%); Zn3.5 (3.5%); and Zn5 (5%). Adper Single Bond 2 (SB) was used as commercial reference. The samples were light cured for 20s using a quartz-tungsten-halogen unit (650 mW/cm2). DC% (n = 5) was measured using FT-IR spectroscopy, and WS and SO (n = 5) were calculated based on ISO4049. Microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and nanoleakage (NL) were measured after 24 h and 12 months of water storage (n = 10). Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test (5%). Zn5 presented the lowest DC% and the highest WS and SO (p < 0.05). Zn0 and Zn2 presented statistically similar DC%, WS, SO, and immediate µTBS. All adhesives containing ZnCl2 maintained a µTBS stability after 12 months, but only Zn2 and Zn3.5 did not suffer an increase in NL. SB presented the highest immediate µTBS but the greatest reduction after 12 months (p < 0.05). The addition of 2 wt.% of ZnCl2 in adhesive formulations seems to be a promising way to improve the resin-dentin bonding stability. Higher concentrations than 2 wt.% could impair some physicochemical properties.

OBJECTIVES: This study compared the effect of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) and ammonia (NH3) plasmas on the bond strength of resin cement to fiber posts with conventional treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-five fiber posts were divided into 5 groups: Control (no surface treatment); H2O2 (24% hydrogen peroxide for 1 min); Blasting (blasting with aluminum oxide for 30 sec); NH3 (NH3 plasma treatment for 3 min); HMDSO (HMDSO plasma treatment for 15 min). After the treatments, the Ambar adhesive (FGM Dental Products) was applied to the post surface (n = 10). The fiber post was inserted into a silicon matrix that was filled with the conventional resin cement Allcem Core (FGM). Afterwards, the post/cement specimens were cut into discs and subjected to a push-out bond strength (POBS) test. Additionally, 3 posts in each group were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy. The POBS data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey's honest significant difference post hoc test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The Blasting and NH3 groups showed the highest POBS values. The HMDSO group showed intermediate POBS values, whereas the Control and H2O2 groups showed the lowest POBS values. CONCLUSION: Blasting and NH3 plasma treatments were associated with stronger bonding of the conventional resin cement Allcem to fiber posts, in a procedure in which the Ambar adhesive was used.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of intra-oral aging on the tetragonal-to-monoclinic (t→m) phase transformation of two Y-TZP dental ceramics - Lava Frame (Frame) and Lava Plus (Plus) - and determine the impact of this response on their microstructures and mechanical properties: flexural strength, Young's modulus, microhardness and fracture toughness. Standardized ceramic specimens were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). After the baseline analysis, the specimens were attached to personalized intra-oral resin appliances and exposed to the oral cavity of 20 subjects for 60 days and then analyzed again. Specimens produced for mechanical properties evaluation were also analyzed before and after the 60-day intra-oral aging. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD's post hoc test (α=0.05). Weibull analysis was used to evaluate the strength reliability. Both Y-TZP ceramics suffered t→m phase transformation after 60-day intra-oral aging (Plus=4.7%/Frame=7.7%). SEM and AFM analyses showed dislodgement of ZrO2 grains and a significant increase in roughness after intra-oral aging for both ceramics. Both Y-TZP ceramics suffered a decrease on flexural strength, Young's modulus and fracture toughness after intra-oral aging (p<0.05). Only Plus presented a decrease of microhardness after intra-oral aging (p<0.05). Intra-oral aging for 60 days produced t→m phase transformation, changed the microstructure and decreased the mechanical properties of two Y-TZP dental ceramics.

In women, bone mass undergoes changes during pregnancy and the postpartum period, which has a risk for subsequent development of osteoporosis. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the effects of flaxseed flour in femur quality during post-weaning of dam rats. After weaning, the rats were divided into control (C, n = 7) and experimental (F, n = 7) groups treated with a diet containing 25 g of flaxseed flour in the lactating period and 15 g in the maintenance period. After 51 days post-partum, serum hormone, fatty acids composition, bone compartments, computed tomography, and biomechanical analyses were determined. Food intake, length, body mass, hormone analysis, and total bone compartments showed similar results. For biomechanical and computed tomography analysis and fatty acids composition, the F group showed higher maximum force (+12%, p < 0.05), breaking strength (+25%, p < 0.05), rigidity (+17%, p < 0.0001), and femoral head radiodensity (+15%, p < 0.05) and presented lower total polyunsaturated fatty acids (-17%, p < 0.0001) and arachidonic acid (-44%, p < 0.0001) and higher ALA (+695%, p < 0.0001) and EPA (+160%, p < 0.05). Fatty acids composition of flaxseed flour, as well as its protein profile and calcium content, were able to improve the bone quality, which may be associated with lower serum levels of arachidonic acid and higher EPA, showing an anti-inflammatory profile and increased deposition of organic matrix during the post-weaning period, and may result in prevention of future osteoporosis.

PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of 4-META concentration and type of solvent on the degree of conversion (DC%) and resin-dentin bond stability of experimental etch-and-rinse adhesives. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four different concentrations of 4-META (12 wt%, 20 wt%, 30 wt%, 40 wt%) were added to a model adhesive system consisting of TEG-DMA (25 wt%), UDMA (20 wt%), HEMA (30 wt%), water (4 wt%), camphorquinone (0.5 wt%), and tertiary amine (0.5 wt%) dissolved in 20% acetone (A12, A20, A30 and A40) or 20% ethanol (E12, E20, E30 and E40). DC% was evaluated by FT-IR spectroscopy. Human molars were wet ground until the occlusal dentin was exposed, the adhesive systems were applied after 37% phosphoric acid etching, and resin composite buildups were incrementally constructed. After storage in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h, the teeth were cut into resin-dentin beams (cross-sectional area 1 mm2). Microtensile bond strength (µTBS) was evaluated after 24 h, 6 months, and 1 year of water storage at 37°C. The failure mode was categorized as adhesive, mixed, or cohesive. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: A12 presented the lowest DC% (p < 0.05). All the other adhesive systems showed statistically similar DC% (p > 0.05). All adhesive systems maintained resin-dentin bond stability after 6 months of water storage, while only A40 and E40 maintained it after 1 year. CONCLUSION: Irrespective of the type of organic solvent, the incorporation of high concentrations of 4-META (40 wt%) improved the resin-dentin bond stability of the experimental etch-and-rinse adhesive systems over a period of 1 year.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of dentin treatment using HEMA phosphate (HEMA-P) on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and nanoleakage of an etch-and-rinse adhesive system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The occlusal surfaces of human molars were wet ground until superficial dentin was exposed. The specimens were then assigned to two groups according to dentin treatment: PA: 37% H3PO4 for 15 s; or HP: HEMA-P for 15 s. Adper Single Bond 2 was applied to the treated dentin surfaces and resin composite buildups were incrementally constructed over them. After 24-h storage in artificial saliva at 37°C, the bonded teeth were cut into resin-dentin sticks with a cross-sectional area of 1 mm², which were submitted to µTBS testing immediately or after 3 months of storage in artificial saliva at 37°C. Nanoleakage was assessed using SEM/EDS, and the interaction between dentin and H3PO4 or HEMA-P was evaluated by combining micro-Raman and FT-IR spectroscopy. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post-hoc test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: HP presented significantly higher µTBS than PA at both times (p < 0.05). Both treatments maintained µTBS stability after 3 months of artificial saliva storage (p > 0.005). At both times, PA presented higher nanoleakage than HP (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both dentin treatments maintained µTBS stability after 3 months of artificial saliva storage. The use of HEMA-P was associated with less nanoleakage than was traditional phosphoric-acid etching.

The aim of this study was to analyze whether flaxseed flour or flaxseed oil treatment contributes to femoral structure in male rats subjected to early weaning. Pups were weaned for separation from mothers at 14 days (early weaning, EW) or 21 days (control, C). After 21 days, the control (C60) was fed with the control diet. The EW group was divided based on control (EWC60), flaxseed flour (EWFF60) and flaxseed oil (EWFO60) diets until 60 days. Femoral dimension, bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), area and biomechanical properties were determined. EWFO60 showed lower (P < 0.05) femur mass. EWC60 and EWFO60 showed lower (P < 0.05) distance between epiphyses, diaphysis width and BMD. BMC was lower (P < 0.05) in EWC60 (vs. C60 and EWFF60). EWC60 and EWFO60 showed lower (P < 0.05) maximum force (vs. C60). Breaking strength was lower (P < 0.05) in EWFO60 (vs. C60). EWFF60 showed higher (P < 0.05) rigidity. Flaxseed flour abbreviated the femoral fragility secondary to early weaning.
