RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of toothbrushing on the surface roughness (Sa), roughness profile (Rv), gloss units (GU) and surface morphology of three glazed ceramics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specimens (n=7) from different CAD/CAM materials 1- Lithium disilicate-based glass ceramic (IPS e.max CAD); 2- Zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass ceramic (Celtra Duo) and 3- 6 mol% yttria partially-stabilized zirconia (InCoris) were evaluated. IPS e.max CAD and InCoris specimens were sintered and all the groups were pre-polished and glazed according to the manufacturer's recommendations: IPS Ivocolor Glaze Paste (Ivoclar Vivadent) or Universal Overglaze High Flu (Dentsply/Sirona). Sa, Rv, GU and morphology were analyzed before and after brushing at 30.000, 120.000 and 180.000 cycles. The data of Sa and GU were analyzed by ANOVA two-way and post-hoc Tukey's test (α=0.05). Rv was analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Student-Newman-Keuls. The surface morphology was analyzed qualitatively. RESULTS: The Sa decreased significantly after 180.000 toothbrushing cycles for all materials tested. CE showed higher Rv than EM and IN, and IN showed the highest GU after 180.000 toothbrushing cycles, which promoted a polishing effect for all materials. CONCLUSION: Long-term toothbrushing was not able to jeopardize the glazed-surface of all tested materials compared to unbrushed.

RESUMEN

This study is a quantitative assessment of the luminous energy transmitted through different translucent fiber posts. After embedding the posts in black resin, the blocks were submitted to sequential cuts in a precision machine, and depths of 16 mm, 12 mm, 8 mm, and 4 mm were assessed for light transmission with a digital photometer. The quantitative analysis showed significant differences between different posts and depths. Furthermore, the values obtained revealed that the quantity of luminous energy transmitted depends on the type of post and that for all of them there was a significant reduction of the quantity of light transmitted as the depth increased. Even without the post, the luminous intensity inside the canal seems to decrease to levels that are insufficient for polymerization, especially in the apical third.

RESUMEN

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the influence of short course topical application of carbamide peroxide on proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemical expression in the oral tongue mucosa of rats. Twelve male Wistar rats were submitted to topical application of 10% carbamide peroxide on one side of the dorsal tongue once a week for three consecutive weeks. Only distilled water was applied on the control side. The animals were killed on days 0, 10, and 20 after the last application. The tongue was fixed in buffered formalin for 24 h and embedded in paraffin. Tissue blocks (3 microns) were subjected to the biotin-streptavidin amplified system for identification of PCNA. The percentage of epithelial-positive basal cells in each side of the tongue mucosa was calculated. The results demonstrated that topical application of 10% carbamide peroxide increases PCNA immunohistochemical expression on the basal layer of the oral mucosa epithelium of rats on day 0 after treatment. In conclusion, short-course use of carbamide peroxide induces transient epithelial cell proliferation of the oral mucosa of rats.
