RESUMEN

Accidental falls are a serious yet underreported form of adverse event in hospitals. Falls account for the leading cause of injury and mortality among older adults. The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021 reported that an estimated 64,000 individuals die annually from falls globally. In the Philippines, about 53.6% of older Filipinos are experiencing falls from a small population-specific setting and they are more likely to experience functional declines than the younger population. The radiology departments and radiologic technologists (RTs) play a vital role in preventing accidental falls among Filipino older adult patients. Despite the existing safety standards promulgated by national health agencies, awareness of healthcare professionals such as radiologic technologists (RTs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as the Philippines remains limited. As such, promoting a safety culture is deemed a main strategy for patient safety from adverse occurrences of falls among Filipino older adults. In doing so, there is a need to establish an incident reporting system for sentinel events, develop risk assessment tools, and define the needed competencies of RTs in preventing catastrophic falls involving Filipino older adult patients. To the authors' knowledge, this paper is the first of its kind to better understand the safety and predisposing risks for falling among older adults in the field of radiology in the Philippines.

RESUMEN

Self-harming behavior (SHB) has become a significant health issue among several populations, including adolescents, traumatized individuals, and persons deprived of liberty. Undoubtedly, incarceration takes a toll on inmates' mental health due to several stressful experiences while in custody. These taxing events make them vulnerable to maladaptive coping strategies, such as SHB. To date, many studies on this behavior have focused on high-income countries. Research has not explored much on this behavior among inmates in developing countries such as the Philippines. This phenomenological inquiry aims to characterize the experiences of select older male Filipino detainees engaged in SHB. Through vertical and horizontal analyses of the narratives shared, this study conceptualized the Self-Harming Behavior of Older Filipino Detainees as Tension and Compression. This model shows the forces that either pull or push the detainees to engage in self-injurious acts. Specifically, the seven themes surfaced: life dispositions, jail ecology, emotional baggage, physically and chemically-induced self-harming behavior, consequences, coping strategies, and cognizance. Findings from this inquiry may necessitate the provision of adequate and comprehensive prevention and intervention services for the self-harmers in jail, which are geared toward implementing a thorough psychological evaluation and promoting sound psychological well-being.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: At the core of a global health crisis, healthcare workers are tasked to perform crucial and life-threatening roles. Despite the heavy-laden responsibilities amid COVID-19 pandemic, these workers are subjected to various forms of stigma and discrimination. OBJECTIVES: The primary intent of this paper is to investigate the existence of discrimination among healthcare workers during COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines. Further, it aims to test the following hypotheses: (1) Discrimination experiences among Filipino healthcare workers are dependent on certain demographic characteristics; and (2) Discrimination experiences vary significantly according to the type of healthcare workers. METHODS: This exploratory study used a two-part survey questionnaire consisting of the baseline data of the respondents and an 8-point Likert-type scale to identify the different forms of discrimination experienced by Filipino healthcare workers. Data yielded by the instruments were descriptively (frequency, mean and percentage) and inferentially (Pearson R, Kendall tau, t-test, and One-Way Analysis of Variance) treated. RESULTS: Among the Filipino healthcare workers, the Radiologic Technologists experienced the most forms of discriminatory acts, followed by Nurses and Medical Technologists. Those who work in high-risk duty assignments experienced the most discriminatory incidents such as insulting gestures and physical/social loathing, social media bashing and offensive jokes. CONCLUSION: The discrimination experienced by Filipino healthcare workers is a valuable platform for health policy interventions at the local and global levels to safeguard the physical, social and psychological well-being of healthcare workers, especially in battling the COVID-19 pandemic.

RESUMEN

With the growing statistics of older adults across societies, sustaining their health and well-being through active participation in sports cannot be neglected nor overlooked. This qualitative study purports to characterize the ontology of social media comments relative to older person's engagement in sports via latent content analysis. Specifically, a set of YouTube comments (n = 7,546), extracted from select videos featuring older adults in sports (n = 62), through YouTube Data Application Programming Interface (API) Version 3, was subjected to inductive analytic procedures of content analysis. Interestingly, this study afforded the emergence of a playing field model emanating from the dualistic perspectives of aging as engagement and aged as engaged that represent how YouTube users view older adult's continual involvement in sports. Limitations and future directions of this study are also discussed in this article.

RESUMEN

The value of professional identity is an interesting territory to explore, relative to working in interprofessional teams and collaborative communities The collaborative opportunities provided to health care workers during COVID-19 pandemic is a rare opportunity to underscore the silent yet significant identity of radiologic technologists as professionals. Historically and prior to the pandemic, the role of radiologic technologists remains unfamiliar, if not unrecognized in the Philippine healthcare industry. The 'alliedness' of this health care professional group is an evolving entity that can no longer be overlooked. The central and indispensable role played by radiologic technologists (RTs) invites meaningful discussion and debate among peers and researchers, to better describe the professional identity and role of the RT as an indispensable member of the interprofessional team. Specific recommendations are offered to improve recognition of RTs and their professional identity within the healthcare system.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Although the increased interest in investigating the dynamics of fatherhood in developed nations has been documented in the literature, its collective meaning and implications in nursing remain largely unknown in the context of East Asia, especially in developing countries such as the Philippines. PURPOSE: Capitalizing on the unique power of metaphors to improve the understanding of complex and abstract ideas and to shape healthcare practices, this qualitative semiotic investigation intended to define the essence of fatherhood from the perspective of Filipino fathers. METHODS: This study focused on a group of 28 first-time and 22 second-time fathers who were recruited from the largest maternal and newborn tertiary government hospital in the Philippines. To capture the richness and thickness of fatherhood as a subjective human reality, doodling and elicitation interviews were employed to promote data triangulation. Furthermore, semiosis was used as the data analytic framework to better understand the ontology and epistemology of the elicited metaphors. In addition, a member-checking procedure was employed to validate the themes that emerged from the inductive approach. RESULTS: This study provides a conceptualization of "The House of Fatherhood," which illustrates the uniqueness of the experience of fatherhood as identity defining, maturity enabling, and duality affirming. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The pillars of fatherhood that were identified in this article provide a valuable framework for Filipino healthcare providers and program administrators in the field of maternal and child nursing to identify scaffolding measures and other support mechanisms to address the needs and concerns of Filipino fathers and their journey to fatherhood in a more effective and holistic way.

RESUMEN

Previous studies suggest that theory-practice gap has remained to be a formidable task and a challenge to the nursing profession. While efforts to understand the nature and dynamics of theory-practice gap have been undertaken across the globe, a dearth in literature exists in the context of a developing country like the Philippines. Seemingly, no research has ventured yet to explore the theory-practice gap experiences of Filipino student nurses. Hence, the major intent of this qualitative investigation is to describe and capture how theory-practice gap is viewed by a select group of senior nursing students (n=10) in a comprehensive university in the Philippines. From the thickness and richness of the descriptions of the field text gathered in this study, an interesting conceptualization labeled as the Theory-Practice Gap Deficit Triad which consists of (a) structural, (b) pedagogical, and (c) relational deficits was emerged. Interestingly, the said model describes a clear intersection of the various concerns and dilemmas encountered by student nurses in their clinical exposures. Findings of this paper are valuable inputs to nursing educators, practitioners, and administrators in initiating realignment efforts geared toward developing nurses whose knowledge, skills and attitudes are responsive to the ever changing professional practice landscape.

RESUMEN

The role of clinical instructor in student nurses' preparation for the professional nursing practice cannot be underestimated. The extent to which such role is achieved depends highly on the instructors' ability to realize the desired qualities expected of them. While a number of empirical studies have qualitatively explored the attributes of an effective clinical instructor, no attempt has ventured yet on the power of experimental vignettes for conjoint analysis in explicating the preferences of a select group of Filipino student nurses relative to their clinical instructors' attributes. Junior and senior nursing students (n=227), recruited from one of the comprehensive universities in the Philippines, were asked to sort out orthogonal cards generated by Sawtooth Software. As shown, the full-profile conjoint analysis was considerably fit for this study: Pearson's R=0.988, (p<0.05) and Kendall's t=0.944, (p<0.05). Results indicated that the student nurses are one in terms of their most preferred clinical instructor attribute, which was clinical teaching capacity (38.14%) followed by interpersonal relationship and caring behavior (33.17%). In regard to the clinical teaching capability, a clinical instructor who parallels clinical teaching skills with the students' understanding and experience (0.089) was the highest part-worth. As for the interpersonal relationship and caring behavior, the highest part-worth was a clinical instructor who respects a student nurse as an individual and cares about him/her as a person (0.114). Findings of this study can be a basis for clinical instructors as to which qualities to cultivate best to facilitate a first-rate clinical nursing instruction. Likewise, the results of this study can inform current practices of clinical instructors by making them aware of how they can nurture a pedagogical approach consistent with the student nurses' preferences.

RESUMEN

Fatherhood, as a developmental process, is both a human experience and a text that needs to be read. For developing nations like the Philippines, little is known about the process undergone by first-time fathers on their transition to fatherhood, and how nurses can play a significant role in assisting them. This grounded theory study purported to conceptualize the multifaceted process of transition from the lens of Filipino first-time fathers' lived experiences. A total of 20 first-time fathers from Metro Manila, Philippines, were purposively selected to take part in an individual, semistructured, and in-depth interview. The Glaserian (classical) method of analysis was specifically used, and field texts were inductively analyzed using a repertory grid. Member checking and correspondence were done to validate the findings of the study. Six surfacing stages emerged relative to the process of transition. Interestingly, The B.R.I.D.G.E. Theory of First-Time Fatherhood Transition Space describes how these fathers progress from the beholding, reorganizing, inhibiting, delivering, grasping, and embracing phases toward successful transition. This emerged theoretical model can be used in framing health care programs where the needs of fathers during this period are met and addressed. Finally, it can also be used in guiding nurses in their provision of a more empathetic care for first-time fathers.

RESUMEN

The role of clinical instructors in preparing student nurses for the realities and dynamics of clinical practice cannot be underestimated. Previous literature has identified scaffolding as a diagnostic tool that enables both supervisor and learner to recognize knowledge-in-waiting and knowledge-in-use (Spouse, 1998). The pivotal role of scaffolding in the teaching-learning process cannot be underestimated. However, literature pertaining to its use in nursing is hard to locate (Dickieson, Carter and Walsh, 2008; Spouse, 1998). Hence, this qualitative study was conducted to capture nursing students' views and experiences of the scaffolding moves of their clinical instructors as they learn medication administration. From the thickness and richness of the descriptions of a select group of nursing students (n=31) in a comprehensive university in the Philippines, three interesting and yet intersecting themes surfaced relative to the scaffolding moves employed by clinical instructors, which include: (1) thought-provoking; (2) focus-steering; and (3) action-enabling. The said moves are carried out in a timely fashion to facilitate students' acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes pertaining to medication administration. Through the understanding of clinical instructors' scaffolding behaviors, this study provides a platform for more effective clinical instruction aimed at supporting future nurses' role in medication safety.

RESUMEN

Considering the paucity of studies dealing with the holistic aspect of the cancer experience, this grounded theory study seeks to conceptualize the process of cancer survivorship among Filipinos. Twenty-seven Filipino cancer survivors were purposively selected, and a two-part instrument, specifically robotfoto and focus group interviews, was used to gather data. The Glaserian method of grounded theory analysis was used, and extended texts were analyzed inductively via a dendrogram. Member checking and correspondence were observed to validate the surfacing stages, leading to the conceptualization of a theoretical model termed as the Ribbon of Cancer Survivorship. The said model describes the trifling (living before), transfusing (accepting the reality), transforming (being strong), and transcending (living beyond) phases of cancer survivorship. Ten interesting substages were also identified, namely: tainting, desolating, disrupting, and embracing for the transfusing phase; tormenting, distressing, awakening, and transfiguring for the transforming phase, and trembling and enlivening for the transcending phase. The resulting theoretical model has clearly and successfully described the entire process of cancer survivorship among Filipinos. It is hoped that the model be used as a reference for future studies about cancer survivorship and as a guide for nurses in providing a more empathetic care among cancer patients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Although the concept of clinical credibility has attracted the interest of some researchers in the field, it is interesting to note the substantive paucity of literature on this since the mid 1990s [Fisher, M., 2005. Exploring how nurse lecturers maintain clinical credibility. Nurse Education in Practice 5, 21-29.] specifically from an Asian context. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study purports to capture how a select group of senior nursing students view their clinical instructors' credibility. METHOD: A total of 22 senior nursing students recruited from a comprehensive university in the capital of the Philippines participated voluntarily in this qualitative study. FINDINGS: With the use of individual indepth interview as a qualitative tool, findings of the study yielded three significant themes that elucidate the essence of credibility from the lens of Filipino nursing students. These include (1) credibility as an image building activity; (2) credibility as a work in progress; and (3) credibility as an influencing agent.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Comfort has been an integral component of nursing interventions. It is also supposed that the degree to which comfort is evidenced in nursing performance depends in great measure on the way forthcoming nurses perceive the said construct during their educational training. OBJECTIVE: This study purports to describe student nurses' outlook of the words "comfort" and "comforting", through conscious doodling, and at the same time to find out instances of similarity or striking distinctions in students' perception on the said terms. METHOD: A sample of 163 freshmen and 116 senior students were provided with a 2-part questionnaire. The first part used a robotfoto to determine the student subject's cartographic sketch. In the second part, a sheet of paper was given to each respondent who was asked to sketch a particular object, event or thought with which he associates the words, comfort and comforting. Moreover, a brief explanation of their illustrations was also called for. Metaphor representations were drawn up and analyzed and clustered according to their similarities in meaning, representation and the number of times the sketches were utilized by the respondents in order to comprehend how they interpret their sketches. CONCLUSIONS: Interestingly, this study yielded four major aspects that reflected the respondent's perception on the words "comfort" and "comforting", namely; physiologic, socio-environmental, psycho-spiritual and emotional. Results of this qualitative study did not show any marked difference in the interpretation of the construct under investigation on the comparison of the student's perception of the terms "comfort" and "comforting".
