RESUMEN

The pentavalent and poliomyelitis vaccines are provided to children through the National Immunization Program in Brazil. For the last few years, this program has been responsible for eradication of various diseases in the country. To describe the vaccination coverage of the pentavalent vaccine and the polio vaccine in Brazil from 2013 to 2022. This is a retrospective and descriptive study with a time series component in which we analyzed vaccination coverage rates of pentavalent and poliomyelitis in the national vaccination program of Brazil from 2013 to 2022. The collected data were arranged in spreadsheets, analyzed, and presented graphically. In general, the coverage of the poliomyelitis and pentavalent vaccines has declined in all regions of Brazil, with significant differences each year. Although there has been a decrease in vaccination coverage in all regions and states, the most affected regions are the North and Northeast. There has been a significant decrease in polio and pentavalent vaccine coverage in recent years, and the rate of decrease differs in different parts of the country.

RESUMEN

Background: Bacterial resistance to multiple drugs has recently emerged as a serious health problem. Concomitantly, the characterization of new substances with potential antimicrobial activity has been less frequent in the drug development industry. The overexpression of genes encoding efflux pumps that expel antimicrobial drugs from the intracellular environment, lowering these to subinhibitory concentrations, are among the resistance mechanisms predisposing microorganisms to high drug resistance. Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium found in the normal microbiota of the skin and mucous membranes, and is an opportunistic microorganism capable of causing infections with high rates of morbidity and mortality. TetK is an efflux pump characterized by its ability to provide bacterial resistance to antibiotics from the tetracycline class. This study aimed to evaluate the inhibitory effect of ferulic acid and four of its esterified derivatives against resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains. Method: Ferulic acid derivatives were obtained by esterification and then characterized by hydrogen and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of ferulic acid and its esterified derivatives, ethidium bromide, and antibiotics were obtained using the microdilution test, while the efflux pump inhibition test was conducted by examining reduction in the MICs. Results: Propylferulate was seen to reduce the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of both the control substance ethidium bromide and the tested antibiotic, indicating that this compound is promising for the use of efflux pump inhibition of IS-58 strains. Conclusions: This study provides strong evidence that the molecular basis for this activity is potentially due to the MsrA and TetK efflux pumps. However, further investigations are necessary to prove this hypothesis and elucidate the potentiating mechanism of the modulatory effect.

RESUMEN

Almost 60% of Afghans forced to flee their homes in 2021 because of the Taliban advance are children. They are starving. It is estimated that approximately one million will suffer from severe, life-threatening malnutrition by the end of 2021. Many have been separated from their families by the chaos that has ensued in Afghanistan after Taliban took power, and hundreds of them were driven out of the country unaccompanied. How must these children have been when they suddenly found themselves without their relatives during the chaotic crisis, or when they boarded an evacuation flight? It is vital to identify them quickly. Too many children witnessed scenes that no child should see. Children and teenagers are dealing with anxiety and fear and desperately need help and mental health care. This is the sad reality facing Afghan children, regardless of ongoing political developments and changes in government.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The fact that COVID-19 is transmissible from human to human and associated with high morbidity and potentially fatality can intensify the perception of personal danger. In addition, the foreseeable shortage of supplies and an increasing flow of suspected and real cases of COVID-19 contribute to the pressures and concerns of health professionals. METHOD: The studies were identified in well-known international journals found in two electronic databases: Scopus and Embase. The data were cross-checked with information from the main international newspapers. RESULTS: Work-related stress is a potential cause of concern for health professionals. It has been associated with anxiety including multiple clinical activities, depression in the face of the coexistence of countless deaths, long work shifts with the most diverse unknowns and demands in the treatment with patients with COVID-19. Therefore, it is an important indicator of psychic exhaustion. CONCLUSIONS: As coronavirus cases increase and deaths surge in Italy, new figures show an "enormous" level of contagion among the country's medical personnel. At least 2,629 health workers have been infected with coronavirus since the outbreak onset in February, representing 8.3% of total cases. The percentage of infected health workers has almost doubled the number registered in China throughout the epidemic. Intensive care unit physicians are on their stress limit, especially when dealing with older patients and with death prospects. Doctors, not a relative, are inevitably the last people a dying COVID-19 patient will see.
