RESUMEN

AIM: In water polo, throwing is one of the most important and frequently used technical skills for the player. There is no scientific literature that provides information about differences in throwing between elite and sub-elite water polo players. The aim of our study was to study differences in throwing velocities and kinematic variables in elite and sub-elite level male water polo players. METHODS: We considered the variables under standardized conditions during a typical motion, the five-meter shot (penalty). Thirty-four athletes from the Men's First Division Water Polo Championship and forty-two players participating in the National Fourth Division League, took part in the study. Video analysis measures were taken with high-speed digital cameras and the videos were analyzed offline with Dartfish 5.0 Pro. RESULTS: No correlation was found between body mass, height and throwing velocity. Elite players had higher values for ball speed (22.8±2.4 m/s for elite team and 18.4±1.7 m/s for sub-elite team; P=0.002) and greater elbow angle (157.5±10.3 degree for elite team versus 146.7±8.9 degree for sub-elite team; P=0.002). In elite team the throwing time was lower (165.6±22.2 and 188.6±23.9 ms, respectively; P=0.05) and the shoulder angle was smaller (115.1±10.3 and 123.8±12.4 degree, respectively; P=0.03) than in sub-elite team. Head height was significantly greater in elite players (elite players 71.1±8.7 cm, sub-elite players 65.6±6.2 cm; P=0.03). CONCLUSION: Differences in kinematic characteristics between elite and sub-elite players were showed. Differences in elbow and shoulder action must be considered both in training and injury prevention.

RESUMEN

Arabinanase is a glycosyl hydrolase that is able to cleave the glycosidic bonds of α-1,5-L-arabinan, releasing arabino-oligosaccharides and L-arabinose. The enzyme has two domains, an N-terminal catalytic domain with a characteristic ß-propeller fold and a C-terminal domain whose function is unknown. A calcium ion, located near the catalytic site, serves to stabilize the N-terminal domain, but it has also been proposed to play a key role in the enzyme mechanism. The present work describes the structure of an inactive mutant of the wild-type enzyme (H318Q) and in which the calcium ion has been adventitiously replaced by nickel. These structural studies, together with functional and modelling studies, clearly support the role of the calcium ion in the overall reaction mechanism.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Two types of detraining can be described: short-term detraining with a period of less than 4 weeks, and long-term detraining (period longer than 4 weeks). The purpose of this study is to verify the presence and eventually the magnitude of physiological cardiorespiratory changes in young team sport players after a period of long-term detraining. METHODS: Fourteen young soccer players (15 ± 1 year) were studied with two incremental tests at the end of the regular season and after a six-week total break period from training activities. Physiological variables were evaluated: heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (VO2), volume of ventilation (VE), aerobic (VA) and anaerobic (Van) running speed at thresholds and maximum effort were recorded. RESULTS: This study shows the magnitude of the physiological changes in young players after a period of long-term detraining. The results showed significant decreases at the end of the detraining period of VO2 at VA of 22.7% (44.54 ± 4.56 vs. 34.41 ± 4.57 mL/kg/min, P<0.05), of 25.8% of VO2 at VAn (54.60 ± 5.81 vs. 40.48 ± 5.07 mL/kg/min, P<0.05) and of 21.2% in VO2 max (62.83 ± 5.77 vs. 49.46 ± 6.51 mL/kg/min, P<0.05). Speed at VA (11.5 ± 0.96 vs. 10.7 ± 0.97 km/h; P<0.05), speed at VAn (15.3 ± 1.05 vs. 14.2 ± 1.48 km/h; P<0.05), peak running speed (18.8 ± 1.20 vs. 17.2 ± 1.1 km/h; P<0.05). CONCLUSION: It is likely that alteration of metabolic parameters may significantly affect the range of physical condition and especially, aerobic-anaerobic resistance and maintenance training would be advisable in young athletes during the transition period. Given the relevance of worsening demonstrated by our data, coaches should avoid very long periods of complete rest (no more than 15 days) at the end of the season.

RESUMEN

The gene product of histidine kinase DR2244 (putative phoR) encoded by Deinococcus radiodurans has been suggested to be involved in the PhoR-PhoB two-component regulatory system. This two-component signalling system is activated upon phosphate starvation in several bacteria, including D. radiodurans. Single crystals were obtained from a recombinant preparation of the catalytic/ATP-binding (CA) domain of D. radiodurans PhoR (79-224) overexpressed in Escherichia coli. The crystals belonged to space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 46.9, b = 81.8, c = 204.6 A. The crystals contained six molecules in the asymmetric unit. Diffraction data were collected to 2.4 A resolution on beamline ID23-2 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: In recent years many authors have reported an increase in thyroid cancer (TC) incidence in several countries. The cause of such phenomenon remains unclear. DESIGN: This study was designed to estimate the incidence of TC in Basilicata, the smallest region of Southern Italy with a population of 596,546 people, between 2001 and 2004. MAIN OUTCOME: A total of 302 cases of TC were identified. The annual incidence of TC changed over the years, from 10.0 per 100,000 people in 2001 to 15.7 per 100,000 people in 2004. The number of new TC cases per 100,000 people increased an average of 16% per yr. Median age at diagnosis was 49 yr. The most frequent histotype was papillary TC (PTC) (73.2%). In 20 (6.6%) patients with PTC, we identified at least one first-degree relative affected by differentiated TC. CONCLUSIONS: The present study shows a high incidence of sporadic and familial non-medullary TC in Basilicata. The reason for this finding may be related to several factors discussed in the paper. Further studies evaluating the trends in the incidence of TC in Basilicata in the future could provide some answers for the potential pathogenetic hypothesis.

RESUMEN

An asymptomatic 31-year-old woman was admitted for evaluation of a heart murmur accidentally discovered at a routine medical examination. A transesophageal echocardiogram disclosed an ostium secundum atrial septal defect and a small mass attached to the inner surface of the non-coronary cups of the aortic valve. The patient underwent closure of the atrial septal defect and excision of the mass without damage to the aortic valve. Hystological analysis of the mass was consistent with the diagnosis of papillary fibroelastoma. Papillary fibroelastoma is the most common of the cardiac valve tumors. It is benign, generally small and asymptomatic, but it has a definite tendency to produce serious embolic complications. Therefore, elective surgical resection is usually recommended. The tumor is most often an incidental finding at autopsy; occasionally it is recognized during life in patients evaluated for embolic events of unclear ethiology. This is one of a few cases in which the diagnosis of a completely asymptomatic fibroelastoma has been accomplished preoperatively, thus allowing a successful surgical therapy.

RESUMEN

A case of bilateral idiopathic granulomatous mastitis in a 67-year-old woman is described. The clinical presentation and mammographic findings raised strong suspicions of malignancy, excluded by the histological examination, which made it possible also to rule out possible known causes of granulomatous inflammation of the breast.
