RESUMEN

Secretory carcinoma, a low-grade malignant tumor, occurs mainly in parotid, submandibular gland, and small salivary glands in the mouth. It has not yet been reported in the mandible. Now we report a case occurred in the right mandibular angle of secretory carcinoma, accompanying with its diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can effectively increase peak oxygen consumption, body composition, physical fitness, and health-related characteristics of adults; however, its impact in the older population remains highly debated. This review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of high-intensity interval training on cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, physical fitness, and health-related outcomes in older adults. Four electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Medline, and Web of Science) were searched (until July 2020) for randomized trials comparing the effect of HIIT on physical fitness, metabolic parameters, and cardiorespiratory fitness in older adults. The Cochrane risk of bias assessment tool was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the included studies; Stata 14.0 software was used for statistical analysis. HIIT significantly improved the maximum rate of oxygen consumption (VO2peak) as compared to a moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) protocol (HIIT vs. MICT: weighted mean difference = 1.74, 95% confidence interval: 0.80-2.69, p < 0.001). Additional subgroup analyses determined that training periods >12 weeks, training frequencies of 2 sessions/week, session lengths of 40 min, 6 sets and repetitions, training times per repetition of >60 s, and rest times of <90 s were more effective for VO2peak. This systematic review and meta-analysis showed that HIIT induces favorable adaptions in cardiorespiratory fitness, physical fitness, muscle power, cardiac contractile function, mitochondrial citrate synthase activity, and reduced blood triglyceride and glucose levels in older individuals, which may help to maintain aerobic fitness and slow down the process of sarcopenia.

BACKGROUND: Compliance with dietary guidelines among pregnant women can positively influence not only their own health but also the health of their babies. Measuring the compliance requires professional skills in nutrition and dietary counseling. In China, few simple and effective techniques assess dietary quality among pregnant women, especially in rural areas. We aimed to establish a new simple and effective assessment technique, the "Chinese Dietary Guidelines Compliance Index for Pregnant Women (CDGCI-PW)" and assess the association between maternal dietary compliance and risks of pregnancy complications. METHODS: The CDGCI-PW consists of 13 main components which were based on the 2016 edition of the Chinese dietary guidelines for pregnant women. Each component was assigned a different score range, and the overall score ranged from 0 to 100 points. The Tongji Maternal and Child Health Cohort study (from September 2013 to May 2016) was a prospective cohort study designed to examine maternal dietary and lifestyle effects on the health of pregnant women and their offspring. The maternal diet during the second trimester was compared with the corresponding recommended intake of the Chinese balanced dietary pagoda for pregnant women to verify their compliance with dietary guidelines. The association between maternal dietary quality and risks of pregnancy complications was estimated by regression analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed to identify the optimal cut-off values of CDGCI-PW for gestational hypertension and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). RESULTS: Among the 2708 pregnant women, 1489 were eventually followed up. The mean CDGCI-PW score was 74.1 (standard deviation (SD) 7.5) in the second trimester. The majority of foods showed the following trend: the higher the CDGCI-PW score, the higher the proportion of pregnant women who reported food intake within the recommended range. Moreover, a higher maternal CDGCI-PW score was significantly associated with lower risks of gestational hypertension [odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval [(CI): 0.30 (0.20, 0.37)] and GDM [OR (95% CI): 0.38 (0.31, 0.48)]. The optimal CDGCI-PW cut-off value for gestational hypertension was ≥68.5 (sensitivity 82%; specificity: 61%; area under the ROC curve, AUC = 0.743), and the optimal CDGCI-PW cut-off score for GDM was ≥75.5 (sensitivity 43%; specificity: 81%; area under the ROC curve, AUC = 0.714). CONCLUSIONS: The CDGCI-PW is a simple and useful technique that assesses maternal diet quality during pregnancy, while adherence to the CDGCI-PW is associated with a lower risk of gestational hypertension and GDM.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Taichong"(LR3) on blood pressure, sympathetic nerve activity, baroreflex sensitivity, and α 2-adrenergic receptor (α2AR) expression in nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) in hypertensive rats, so as to reveal its mechanisms underlying improvement of hypertension. METHODS: Male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: sham-operation, model, EA, and sham-EA (non-acupoint) groups, with 12 rats in each group. The hypertension model was established by occlusion of the right renal aorta (two-kidney-one clip method). Rats of the sham-operation group received the same surgery but without occlusion of the renal artery. EA (2 Hz/15 Hz, 2 mA) was applied to bilateral LR3 for 30 min, once a day for 28 days, and sham EA was applied to the skin of the rat tail near the buttock on both sides. The mean arterial pressure (MAP) of the abdominal aorta and heart rate (HR) were recorded. The autonomic nerve function was assessed by using frequency domain analysis of heart rate variability (HRV), and the baroreflex sensitivity detected by sequential method. Plasma norepinephrine (NE) level was measured by ELISA, and the α2AR positive neurons and α2AR protein expression in NTS were detected by using fluorescence immunohistochemistry and Western blot, respectively. The functions of α2AR within the NTS in modulating MBP and HR were verified by microinjection of its agonist (clonidine) and antagonist (yohimbine) separately. RESULTS: Compared to the sham operation rats, the hypertension rats displayed significant increases in the MAP (P<0.01), plasma norepinephrine content (P<0.01), ratios of low frequency/total power (LF/TP) and low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) (P<0.01), and significant reduction in the overall gain, uplink sequence gain and downlink sequence gain of baroreflex (P<0.01), the number α2AR positive neurons and α2AR protein expression level in NTS (P<0.01). The rats in the EA group (rather than in the sham-EA group) showed significant reduction in MAP at the 3rd and 4th week, plasma NE content, LF/TP and LF/HF (P<0.01), and obvious increase in the overall gain, uplink sequence gain and downlink sequence gain of baroreflex (P<0.01), and the number of α2AR positive neurons and α2AR protein expression in comparison (P<0.05) with those of the model group. Microinjection of clonidine into NTS induced an evident decrease in both MAP and HR in the model group relevant to the sham operation group (P<0.01), while the MAP and HR changes of the EA (not sham EA) group were considerably bigger than those of the model group (P<0.05), being similar to those of the sham-operation group (P>0.05), which suggested an elimination of the BP-lowering effect of clonidine after EA. CONCLUSION: EA at LR3 can reduce MBP, sympathetic activities, improve baroreflex sensitivity in renovascular hypertensive rats, which may be associated with its effects in up-regulating the decreased NTS α2AR expression and functional activities.

BACKGROUND: Presently, the results of studies assessing the association of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) with adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) in offspring remain inconclusive, and a complete overview is missing. We performed a meta-analysis of cohort studies to review and summarize the association between HDP and risk of APOs in offspring. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Chinese databases were searched through May 2019 to identify eligible studies. Outcomes of interest were APOs including perinatal death, fetal death, stillbirth, neonatal death, congenital malformations, preterm birth (PTB), very preterm birth (VPTB), intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), small for gestational age (SGA), low birth weight (LBW), and very low birth weight (VLBW). Either a fixed- or a random-effects model was used to calculate the overall combined risk estimates. Subgroup analysis was performed to explore potential heterogeneity moderators. RESULTS: Total 152 cohort studies involving 1,426,742 mothers with HDP and 36,374,542 mothers without HDP were included for analysis. Overall, mothers with HDP compared with those without HDP had a significantly higher risk of perinatal death (OR = 2.86), fetal death (OR = 2.82), stillbirth (OR = 1.93), neonatal death (OR = 1.55), congenital malformations (OR = 2.66), IUGR (OR = 5.48), SGA (OR = 3.39), LBW (OR = 5.02), VLBW (OR = 1.74), PTB (OR = 4.20) and VPTB (OR = 3.26) in offspring. Relevant heterogeneity moderators were identified by subgroup analyses. The sensitivity analysis yielded consistent results. No evidence of publication bias was observed. CONCLUSION: The present study indicates that HDP significantly increases risk of APOs. Further research is needed to explore efficient management methods to minimize the risk of APOs associated with HDP.

A 90-year-old man was diagnosed with primary gastric diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (PGDLBL) by PET/CT examination, gastroscopy, biopsy and histopathological analysis at a regular physical check in April, 2016. The patient received R-CO chemotherapy (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, and vincristine) and radiotherapy subsequently, with enteral nutritional treatment through 3-cavity nasogastric tube due to development of pyloric obstruction. To satisfy patient's strong desire of eating by himself, we performed surgery of exploratory laparotomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RGB) to relieve pylorus obstruction. Postoperatively, the patient resumed oral feeding, supplemented by nasogastric tube feeding at 1350 - 1550 Kcal daily. He is now 94 years old with fairly well nutrition and normal communication. The outcome of 4 year follow-up suggests that nutritional treatment and palliative medicine are important for improving prognosis and life-quality of very elderly patients with end-stage tumors apart from the effective chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery.

Although reduced ambient lighting ("dim" light) can cause myopia in emmetropizing chicks, it does not necessarily lead to myopic changes in emmetropizing rhesus monkeys. Because myopia is rarely spontaneous, a question remained whether dim light would hasten the progression of visually induced myopia. To determine the effects of dim light on the development of and recovery from form-deprivation myopia (FDM), seven 3-week-old infant rhesus monkeys were reared under dim light (mean ± SD = 55 ± 9 lx) with monocular diffuser spectacles until ~154 days of age, then maintained in dim light with unrestricted vision until ~337 days of age to allow for recovery. Refractive errors, corneal powers, ocular axial dimensions and sub-foveal choroidal thicknesses were measured longitudinally and compared to those obtained from form-deprived monkeys reared under typical laboratory lighting (504 ± 168 lx). Five of the seven subjects developed FDMs that were similar to those observed among their normal-light-reared counterparts. The average degree of form-deprivation-induced myopic anisometropia did not differ significantly between dim-light subjects (-3.88 ± 3.26D) and normal-light subjects (-4.45 ± 3.75D). However, three of the five dim-light subjects that developed obvious FDM failed to exhibit any signs of recovery and the two monkeys that were isometropic at the end of the treatment period manifest abnormal refractive errors during the recovery period. All refractive changes were associated with alterations in vitreous chamber elongation rates. It appears that dim light is not a strong myopiagenic stimulus by itself, but it can impair the optical regulation of refractive development in primates.

Although previous studies have discussed the association between trajectories of blood pressure (BP) and risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the association among the non-hypertensive general population of youth and middle age has not been elucidated. We used the growth mixture model to explore the trajectories of BP among the non-hypertensive Chinese population and applied Cox regression to evaluate the association between trajectories of BP and the risk of stroke or myocardial infarction (MI). Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were categorized into three classes, respectively. Statistically significant associations were observed between SBP trajectories and stroke (range of adjusted hazard ratios (aHR): 1.369-3.837) or MI (rang of aHR = 6.047-13.017). Association between DBP trajectories and stroke (aHR: 3.685) or MI (range of aHR = 1.312-2.821) were also observed, although they did not reach statistical significance. Trajectories of SBP were more important risk factors than that of DBP in stroke and MI in our study population. BP management is important among pre-hypertensive adults to prevent stroke and MI when they age. Well-designed research with a larger sample size is required to confirm our findings and develop efficient methods to prevent CVDs.

Disease progression prediction and therapeutic drug target discovery for Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are particularly important, as there is still no effective strategy for severe COVID-19 patient treatment. Herein, we performed multi-platform omics analysis of serial plasma and urine samples collected from patients during the course of COVID-19. Integrative analyses of these omics data revealed several potential therapeutic targets, such as ANXA1 and CLEC3B. Molecular changes in plasma indicated dysregulation of macrophage and suppression of T cell functions in severe patients compared to those in non-severe patients. Further, we chose 25 important molecular signatures as potential biomarkers for the prediction of disease severity. The prediction power was validated using corresponding urine samples and plasma samples from new COVID-19 patient cohort, with AUC reached to 0.904 and 0.988, respectively. In conclusion, our omics data proposed not only potential therapeutic targets, but also biomarkers for understanding the pathogenesis of severe COVID-19.

Inadequate trophoblast proliferation, shallow invasion and exaggerated rate of trophoblast apoptosis are implicated in early recurrent miscarriage (ERM). However, the mechanistic bases of this association have not been fully established. We aimed at investigating the involvement of fascin, an actin-bundling protein, in trophoblast activities and ERM. We found that fascin was downregulated in the cytotrophoblasts (CTBs) and distal cytotrophoblasts (DCTs) of ERM placentae. Knockdown of fascin altered cellular and nucleolar morphology, and inhibited the proliferation but increased apoptosis of trophoblastic HTR8/SVneo cells. Furthermore, fascin knockdown decreased the expression of transcription factors such as Snail1/2, Twist and Zeb1/2, mesenchymal molecules such as Vimentin and N-cadherin, and the protein expression of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and phosphorylates signal transducer and activator of transcript 3 (STAT3). Exposure of HTR-8/SVneo cells to hypoxia reoxygenation (H/R) decreased fascin expression to affect the cells' invasion. Our results indicate for the first time that the downregulation of fascin is involved in the pathogenesis of early recurrent miscarriage; and hence a potential therapeutic target against the disease.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the role of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/computed tomography (CT) in the evaluation of multicentric Castleman disease (MCD). METHODS: Thirty-five patients with pathologically confirmed MCD who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT were retrospectively included. The FDG uptake and CT findings of lymph nodes, pulmonary involvement, spleen, and bone marrow were assessed and the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of each lesion was measured. The locations of lymph nodes were also evaluated. RESULTS: 18F-FDG PET/CT showed increased uptake in multiple nodal regions in 34 out of 35 MCD patients. The most frequently involved nodal sites were the cervical, iliac, axillary, and inguinal areas, and the least common was paraaortic and abdominal nodes. The involved lymph nodes were not confluent and presented a relatively symmetric pattern on PET/CT images. The highest SUVmax of lymph nodes per patient ranged from 2 to 19 with a mean value of 5.61 ± 3.12. Pulmonary manifestation including cysts, nodules, and interstitial lung disease were found in 10 patients, eight of whom demonstrated mild to moderate uptake in the lungs. 18F-FDG PET/CT also revealed other findings including hypermetabolic spleen (n = 8) and bone marrow (n = 23), elevated uptake in salivary glands (n = 8). Four patients also underwent follow-up PET/CT scans after therapy, and three of them displayed decreased metabolism. CONCLUSION: 18F-FDG PET/CT is a useful tool in the diagnosis, evaluation, and follow-up of MCD by providing systemic manifestations of lymphadenopathy, pulmonary involvement, and hypermetabolic spleen or bone marrow. Furthermore, the lymphadenopathy in MCD presented a predominantly peripheral distribution, relatively symmetric, moderately hypermetabolic, and not confluent pattern on 18F-FDG PET/CT.

A novel Gram-stain-negative bacterium, designated strain GY 70310T, was isolated from the intestinal tract of Konosirus punctatus collected from Minjiang River, China. Cells of the strain were rod-shaped and motile with a single polar flagellum. The result of 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses showed that strain GY 70310T was moderately related to Crenobacter luteus YIM 78141T (94.7%), Paludibacterium paludis KBP-21T (93.8%) and Crenobacter cavernae K1W11S-77T (93.0%). The draft genome of strain GY 70310T consisted of 3.4 Mbp with DNA G+C content of 66.3 mol%, which possessed genes putatively encoding nitrate reductase, nitrite oxidoreductase and urease. The novel strain showed a whole genome average nucleotide identity (OrthoANI) value of 77.1% and a digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) value of 22.4% with Crenobacter luteus DSM 27258T, followed by Crenobacter cavernae K1W11S-77T with OrthoANI and dDDH values of 76.4% and 20.6%, respectively. The major fatty acids (>10%) were identified as summed feature 3 (C16:1ω6c and/or iso-C15:0 2-OH, C16:1ω7c), C16:0 and C18:1ω7c. The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8). The polar lipids comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminophospholipid, one unidentified lipid and one unidentified phospholipid. On the basis of phylogenetic analyses, genotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain GY 70310T represents a novel species of the genus Crenobacter, for which the name Crenobacter intestini sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is GY 70310T (= CGMCC 1.16821T = KCTC 62945T = NBRC 113900T).

Chemiluminescence (CL) reagent luminol was loaded into the porous structure of cobalt-imidazole metal-organic framework (MOF) ZIF-67 to obtain luminol-functionalized ZIF-67 (luminol@ZIF-67) with CL property. The morphology, composition, CL property, and CL mechanism of luminol@ZIF-67 were carefully investigated. The obtained luminol@ZIF-67 exhibited strong, stable, and visible CL emission that reacted with H2O2, attributed to the strong catalytic effect of ZIF-67 combined with the shortened diffusion distance between luminol and the catalytic center. The CL intensity of luminol@ZIF-67 was more than 550 times higher than that of luminol. Catechol can effectively quench the CL emission of luminol@ZIF-67 that reacted with H2O2. Then, a simple paper-based CL imaging detection method was developed for the detection of catechol by using a smartphone as a portable detector. The linear calibration curve of the developed CL assay for catechol ranged from 5 to 100 mg/L with detection limit of 1.1 mg/L (S/N = 3δ). The strong CL emission of luminol@ZIF-67 combined with the effective quench ability of catechol guaranteed high sensitivity of the detection method. The practical application ability of the developed CL assay was tested by the determination of catechol in tea and tap water samples, resulting in acceptable results. This work provides an effective paper-based CL detection method for catechol and enriches the species of the chemiluminescent MOF material.

In this study, we designed an integrated electrochemical filtration system for catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and degradation of aqueous microcontaminants. Composites of carbon nanotube (CNT) and nanoscale zero valence copper (nZVC) were developed to serve as high-performance catalysts, electrode and filtration media simultaneously. We observed both radical and nonradical reaction pathways, which collectively contributed to the degradation of model pollutants. Congo red was completely removed via a single-pass through the nZVCCNT filter (τ <2 s) at neutral pH. The rapid kinetics of Congo red degradation were maintained across a wide pH range (from 3.0-7.0), in complicated matrixes (e.g., tap water and lake water), and for the degradation of a wide array of persistent organic contaminants. The superior activity of nZVCCNT stems from the boosted redox cycles of Cu2+/Cu+ in the presence of an external electric field. The flow-through design remarkably outperformed the conventional batch system due to the convection-enhanced mass transport. Mechanism studies suggested that the carbonyl group and electrophilic oxygen of CNT served as electron donor and electron acceptor, respectively, to activate PMS to generate •OH and 1O2via one-electron transport. The electron-deficient Cu atoms are prone to react with PMS via surface hydroxyl group to produce reactive intermediates (Cu2+-O-O-SO3-), and then 1O2 will be generated by breaking the coordination bond of the metastable intermediate. The study will provide a green strategy for the remediation of organic pollution by a highly efficient and integrated system based on catalytic oxidation, electrochemistry, and nano-filtration techniques.

The formation of the water rights trading price is an important part of the water rights trading system. In order to continuously and dynamically reflect the social-economic development changes and water resource scarcity, herein, we discuss the dynamic adjustment of the water rights trading price from the perspective of water resource scarcity value analysis. First, we constructed the water resource scarcity evaluation index system from the four dimensions of the water resource natural endowment, the water resource supply, the water resource demand, and the water environment, and then we constructed the water resource scarcity index calculation model of the transferor, the transferee, and the comprehensive water resource scarcity index calculation model of both parties of the trading. Second, by analyzing the 30 comparable water rights trading cases in China since 2016, we established the response function of the water rights trading price to the water resource scarcity index, and then we analyzed the impact mechanism of the water resource scarcity index on the water rights trading price. Third, based on the two factors of "the water resource scarcity value" and "the capital time value," we constructed a dynamic price adjustment model of water rights trading for different adjustment factors, so as to adjust the water rights trading price scientifically. Finally, we took the water rights trading in Helan County (Helan) of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (Ningxia) as an example. The research shows that: (1) During the trading period of water rights in Helan, the water resource scarcity index rises, and the water rights trading price should be increased year-by-year. Additionally, there are certain differences in the water rights trading price changes with the adjustment of different elements. Among them, considering the adjustment of "the water resource scarcity value" element, the water rights trading price of Helan should be increased from 1.0940 to 2.8574 CNY/m³ during the water rights trading period; (2) there are differences in the water rights trading cost under different payment modes, among which the annual payment mode increased the most, i.e., from 2.7350 × 108 to 7.4500 × 108 CNY. This study suggests exerting a regulating effect of the water scarcity value on the water rights trading price, so as to promote the construction of a more equitable and long-term water rights trading market.

OBJECTIVES: Sepsis-associated acute lung injury (ALI) occurs with the highest morbidity and carries the highest mortality rates among the pathogenies of ALI. Ruscogenin (RUS) has been found to exhibit anti-inflammation property and rescue lipopolysaccharide-induced ALI, but little is known about its role in sepsis-triggered ALI. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential role of RUS in sepsis-induced ALI and the probable mechanism. METHODS: Mice model of cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) was replicated, and three doses of RUS (0.01, 0.03 and 0.1 mg/kg) were administrated 1 h before CLP surgeries. KEY FINDINGS: RUS significantly extended the survival time and attenuated the lung pathological injury, oedema and vascular leakage in sepsis-induced ALI mice. RUS efficiently decreased the level of MPO in lung tissue and the WBC, NEU counts in BALF. In addition, RUS rescued the expression of VE-cadherin and p120-catenin and suppressed the TLR4/Src signalling in lung tissue. CONCLUSIONS: RUS attenuated sepsis-induced ALI via protecting pulmonary endothelial barrier and regulating TLR4/Src/p120-catenin/VE-cadherin signalling pathway.

High-incidence regions of Leptospirosis caused by Leptospira spp., coincide with chronic kidney disease. This study investigates whether asymptomatic leptospirosis is an emerging culprit that predispose to progressive chronic kidney disease when superimposed on secondary nephrotoxic injury. Kidney histology/function and whole-transcriptomic profiles were evaluated for leptospira-infected C57/BL6 mice with adenine-induced kidney injury. The extent of tubulointerstitial kidney lesions and the expression of inflammation/fibrosis genes in infected mice with low-dose (0.1%) adenine, particularly in high-dose (0.2%) adenine-fed superimposed on leptospira-infected mice, were significantly increased compared with mice following infection or adenine diet alone and the findings are consistent with renal transcriptome analysis. Pathway enrichment findings showed integrin ß- and fibronectin-encoding genes had distinct expression within the integrin-linked kinase signaling pathway which were up-regulated in 0.2% adenine-fed leptospira-infected mice but not in 0.2% adenine-fed mice, indicating background subclinical leptospiral infection indeed enhanced subsequent secondary nephrotoxic kidney injury and potential pathogenic molecules associated with secondary nephrotoxic leptospirosis. Comparative analysis of gene-expression patterns with UUO-induced mouse renal fibrosis and patients with chronic kidney disease showed that differentially expressed orthologous genes such as hemoglobin α, PDZ binding kinase and DNA topoisomerase II α were identified in infected mice fed with low-dose and high-dose adenine, respectively, revealing differentially expressed signatures identical to those found in the datasets and may serve as markers of aggravated kidney progression. This study indicates that background subclinical leptospirosis, when subjected to various degrees of subsequent secondary nephrotoxic injury, may predispose to exacerbated fibrosis, mimicking the pathophysiological process of progressive chronic kidney disease.
