RESUMEN

The recently proposed omnidirectional depth segmentation method (ODSM) has advantages over traditional depth segmentation in terms of robustness and computational costs. However, this method uses at least six fringe patterns and changes their sequences multiple times to perform depth segmentation, which limits its segmentation speed and increases computational complexity. This paper proposes a fast computational depth segmentation (FCDS) method in which only five patterns are used for object segmentation at different depths into isolated regions without the requirement of pattern sequence changing. Phase singularity points are fully utilized due to their significance as depth segmentation markers to extract segmenting lines used for depth determination. Meanwhile, a modified Fourier transform algorithm (MFTA) is introduced to calculate the wrapped phase sequences, which uses two groups of orthogonal phase-shifting fringe patterns and a DC component pattern (five in total). The segmenting lines along orthogonal directions can be extracted with the FCDS method without changing the fringe sequences, which not only solves the problem of phase insensitivity but reduces the calculation costs. Besides, the problem of mis-segmentation is solved with an optimization algorithm for depth segmenting lines and successfully segments objects with abrupt depth changes. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and precision of the proposed method. The experimental results prove the success of the proposed method for segmenting objects of similar color with a segmentation speed that is up to a 120% increase relative to previous methods.

In recent years, the utilization of CS-MWCNT as targeted drug carriers has attracted considerable attention. Hericium erinaceus polysaccharide (HEP) has been reported as an immunostimulant to improve immune responses. This study was focussed on developing CS-MWCNT encapsulating HEP (CS-MWCNT-HEP). Using in mice peritoneal macrophages, we found the immune response could be effectively regulated by CS-MWCNT-HEP, promoted the expression of the MHCII, CD86, F4/80 and gp38. Moreover, the mice immunized with CS-MWCNT-HEP nanoparticles significantly extended PCV2-specific IgG immune response and the levels of cytokines. The results demonstrated that CS-MWCNT-HEP may be a promising drug delivery system for immuno-enhancement.

Previous studies demonstrated that microcystin-leucine-arginine (MC-LR) disrupted testosterone (T) synthesis, but the underlying mechanisms are not entirely elucidated. This study aims to explore the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated GCN2/eIF2α activation on MC-LR-induced disruption of testicular T synthesis. Male mice were intraperitoneally injected with MC-LR (0 or 20 µg/kg) daily for 5 weeks. Serum T was decreased in MC-LR-exposed mice (0.626 ± 0.122 vs 24.565 ± 8.486 ng/ml, P < 0.01), so did testicular T (0.667 ± 0.15 vs 8.317 ± 1.387 ng/mg protein, P < 0.01). Steroidogenic proteins including StAR, CYP11A1 and CYP17A1 were downregulated in MC-LR-exposed mouse testes and TM3 cells. Mechanistically, p-GCN2 and p-eIF2α were elevated in MC-LR-exposed TM3 cells. GCN2iB attenuated MC-LR-induced GCN2 and eIF2α phosphorylation in TM3 cells. Moreover, GCN2iB attenuated MC-LR-induced downregulation of steroidogenic proteins in TM3 cells. Further analysis found that cellular ROS were elevated and HO-1 was upregulated in MC-LR-exposed TM3 cells. PBN rescued MC-LR-induced activation of GCN2/eIF2α signaling in TM3 cells. Additionally, pretreatment with PBN attenuated MC-LR induced downregulation of steroidogenic proteins and synthases in TM3 cells. These results suggest that ROS-mediated GCN2/eIF2α activation contributes partially to MC-LR-caused downregulation of steroidogenic proteins and synthases. The present study provides a new clue for understanding the mechanism of MC-LR-induced endocrine disruption.

The present study investigates the similarity problem associated with the onset of the Mach reflection of Zel'dovich-von Neumann-Döring (ZND) detonations in the near field. The results reveal that the self-similarity in the frozen-limit regime is strictly valid only within a small scale, i.e., of the order of the induction length. The Mach reflection becomes non-self-similar during the transition of the Mach stem from "frozen" to "reactive" by coupling with the reaction zone. The triple-point trajectory first rises from the self-similar result due to compressive waves generated by the "hot spot", and then decays after establishment of the reactive Mach stem. It is also found, by removing the restriction, that the frozen limit can be extended to a much larger distance than expected. The obtained results elucidate the physical origin of the onset of Mach reflection with chemical reactions, which has previously been observed in both experiments and numerical simulations.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to analyze the effects of ruxolitinib on children with secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). METHODS: Eleven pediatric patients diagnosed with HLH and treated with ruxolitinib (ruxolitinib group: group R) between November 2017 and August 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Eleven age-matched pediatric patients with HLH undergoing conventional treatment (control group: group C) during the same period were also analyzed. RESULTS: In group R, three patients who did not respond to methylprednisolone (MP) pulse and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapies were treated with Ruxolitinib and their temperature decreased to normal levels. Four patients had normal temperature after conventional treatment (dexamethasone and etoposide, with or without cyclosporine A), but they had severe organ involvement, including obvious yellowing of the skin, increased liver enzyme levels and neuropsychiatric symptoms, and they were all ameliorated with ruxolitinib treatment. Four patients were relieved with ruxolitinib therapy alone. In group C, the body temperatures of eleven patients decreased to normal levels after conventional treatment. The body temperature of group R patients decreased to normal levels more rapidly than that of group C patients. The glucocorticoid dosage in group R was significantly lower than that in group C. Both groups were followed-up for 2-2.5 years. No obvious adverse drug reactions to ruxolitinib were observed during treatment and follow-up. CONCLUSION: Ruxolitinib might be an effective drug in controlling body temperature and reducing inflammation indicators. It might be a potential replacement for glucocorticoid therapy for HLH treatment in children, thereby reducing or avoiding glucocorticoid-related adverse reactions.

Saturation effects limit the application of vegetation indices (VIs) in dense vegetation areas. The possibility to mitigate them by adopting a negative soil adjustment factor X is addressed. Two leaf area index (LAI) data sets are analyzed using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) for validation. The first one is derived from observations of MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) from 16 April 2013, to 21 October 2020, in the Apiacás area. Its corresponding VIs are calculated from a combination of Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 surface reflectance products. The second one is a global LAI dataset with VIs calculated from Landsat-5 surface reflectance products. A linear regression model is applied to both datasets to evaluate four VIs that are commonly used to estimate LAI: normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), transformed SAVI (TSAVI), and enhanced vegetation index (EVI). The optimal soil adjustment factor of SAVI for LAI estimation is determined using an exhaustive search. The Dickey-Fuller test indicates that the time series of LAI data are stable with a confidence level of 99%. The linear regression results stress significant saturation effects in all VIs. Finally, the exhaustive searching results show that a negative soil adjustment factor of SAVI can mitigate the SAVIs' saturation in the Apiacás area (i.e., X = -0.148 for mean LAI = 5.35), and more generally in areas with large LAI values (e.g., X = -0.183 for mean LAI = 6.72). Our study further confirms that the lower boundary of the soil adjustment factor can be negative and that using a negative soil adjustment factor improves the computation of time series of LAI.

PURPOSE: To examine the association of chronic endometritis (CE) with cervical incompetence (CI) in Chinese women with mid-trimester loss, and the impact of the presence of CE on the outcome of laparoscopic cervical cerclage (LCC). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included a study group of 293 women with mid-trimester loss due to CI (group I) and a comparison group of 332 women with recurrent first-trimester miscarriage (group II). Immunohistochemical study using CD138 epitope for the diagnosis of CE was completed in all subjects. Pre-conception LCC was undertaken in 247 women in the study group (group I). The study was approved by Institutional Review Board (IRB) (number 2015FXHEC-KY005). RESULTS: The prevalence of CE in group I was 42%, significantly (P < 0.001) higher than that of 23.5% in group II. Among 247 women in group I, there were no significant difference in mid-trimester loss rate, preterm delivery rate and term delivery rate in women with and without CE (2.2, 12.0, 85.8% vs. 1.8, 10.1, 88.1% respectively) and between women with CE treated and not treated with antibiotics prior to conception (2.3, 9.3, 88.4% vs. 2.0, 14.3, 83.7% respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Mid-trimester loss due to cervical incompetence is associated with chronic endometritis; However, the presence or not of CE and whether it was treated with antibiotics prior to conception did not appear to significantly influence the obstetric outcomes of women with CI after LCC.

Introduction: Aim to obtain a NO donor that can control released NO in vivo with the high efficacy of tumor suppression and targeting, a nanoplatform consisting of FA-Fe3O4@mSiO2-Au/DOX was constructed. Methods: In vitro, the nanoplatform catalyzed NO's release with the maximum value of 4.91 µM within 60 min at 43°C pH=5.0, which was increased by 1.14 times when the temperature was 37°C. In vivo, 11.7 µg Au in the tumor tissue was found to catalyze S-nitrosoglutathione continuously, and 54 µM NO was checked out in the urine. Results and Discussion: The high concentration of NO was found to increase the apoptotic rate and to reduce tumor proliferation. In the chemo-photothermal combination therapy, the tumor inhibition rate was increased up to 94.3%, and Au's contribution from catalyzing NO release NO was 8.17%.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical features and prognostic factors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) children with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement. METHODS: A total of 108 children with B-cell ALL (B-ALL) were diagnosed and systematically treated according to Chinese Children's Leukemia Group (CCLG) -ALL 2008 in our hospital from January 2016 to December 2016. The 108 patients were divided into two groups according to the result of mutiplex polymerase chain reaction: group with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement and group without P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement. The ALL children with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement were all treated by CCLG-ALL 2008 high-risk group (HR) regimens, and the ALL children in group without P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement received different intensity chemotherapy according to clinical risk classification. RESULTS: Five (4 male and 1 female) out of 108 patients with B-ALL had P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement. In the 5 B-ALL patients with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement, the median age of the was 4 (2-6) years old and the median WBC count was 26.2 (2.46-525.1)×109/L. These patients presented different immunophenotype, including 3 cases of common B-ALL and 2 cases of pre B-ALL. Four patients carried a normal karyotype and 1 patient carried 46, XY, der (20) [22]/46, XY[2]. For the children with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement, 1 patient (20%) could not achieve complete remission (CR), and minimal residual disease (MRD) of 2 patients (40%) was higher than 1% on day 33 of induction chemotherapy; while in group without P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement, all the patient achieved CR, and MRD in 6 patients (5.8%) was higher than 1% on day 33 of induction chemotherapy. The 3 year event-free survival (EFS) of ALL children in group with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement was significantly lower than that in group without P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement (60.0%±21.9% vs 85.9%±3.9%) (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The early treatment response and prognosis of ALL children with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement are worse, and more effective protocol is needed for this subtype patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mutational spectrum and its prognostic significance in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). METHODS: The clinical data of 93 patients with newly diagnosed AML who underwent gene mutation detection by high-throughput sequencing (HTS) from March 2014 to April 2018 in our hospital was analyzed retrospectively. The distribution of mutant genes was summarized and the prognostic factors for intermediate-risk acute myeloid leukemia (IR-AML) were analyzed. RESULTS: Among 93 AML patients, 88.17% had at least one gene mutation, and 53.76% patients showed more than one recurrent genetic mutation. CEBPA showed the highest mutation frequency (20.4%), followed by ASXL1, TET2, NRAS, FLT3-ITD, NPM1, IDH2, DNMT3A, and their mutation frequency were higher than 10%. IDH1/2 and NPM1, ASXL1 and U2AF1, FLT3 and NPM1 often co-occured (P < 0.05). In the prognosis analysis of 57 patients with IR-AML, the IDH2 mutation related with poor overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) (P < 0.05). The prognosis analysis of IR-AML patients showed that age≥50 years, WBC >100×109/L, anemia, and CD22+ were independent risk factors for OS. Age≥50 years , WBC >100×109/L, anemia, CD34+, IDH2 mutation were independent risk factors for PFS. CONCLUSION: There are co-occurring mutation patterns between the mutated genes. IDH2 mutations relates with poor prognosis and possesses potential to be molecules for model of IR-AML prognostic stratification. Genetic testing based on HTS contributes to revealing the pathogenic mechanism of AML, and is significant for evaluating the prognosis of patients with AML.

OBJECTIVES: The postoperative risk factors for electroencephalogram(EEG) abnormalities after paediatric cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) remain to be identified. We investigated the characteristics of EEG abnormalities and risk factors in routine clinical management post-CPB. METHODS: EEG and cerebral oxygen saturation (ScO2) were monitored in 96 patients (aged 3 days, 37 months, median 5 months) for 72 h post-CPB. Clinical measurements included 4-hourly arterial and central venous pressure, arterial blood gases, doses of inotropic and vasoactive drugs, daily C-reactive protein (CRP) and NT-proB-type Natriuretic Peptide (NT-proBNP). Demographics, STAT categories and outcomes (duration of mechanical ventilation, CICU stay) were recorded. Un. RESULTS: Seizures occurred in 20 patients (20.8%) beginning at 0-48 hand lasting 10 min-31 h; background abnormalities occurred in 67 (69.8%) beginning at 0-8 h and lasting 4-48 h. Patients with EEG abnormalities had worse outcomes. In univariable regression, seizures positively correlated with STAT categories, CPB time, temperature, blood pressure, central venous pressure, NT-proBNP, CRP, lactate and epinephrine, negatively with ScO2 and PaCO2 (P < 0.001 for lactate and epinephrine, P < 0.1 for the remaining). The degree of background abnormalities positively correlated with STAT categories, CPB time, operative time, central venous pressure, milrinone, negatively with blood pressure (P = 0.0003-0.087); it negatively correlated with lower dose of epinephrine (P < 0.001) and positively with higher dose (P = 0.03l). In multivariable regression, seizures positively correlated with epinephrine, lactate and temperature; the background abnormality correlations remain significant except for milrinone and operative time (P < 0.001 for epinephrine, P < 0.05 for the remaining). CONCLUSIONS: Numerous perioperative risk factors are associated with EEG abnormalities post-CPB. The most significant and consistent risk factor is epinephrine.

Peptide and protein therapeutics generally exhibit high potency and specificity and are increasingly important segments of the pharmaceutical market. However, their clinical applications are limited by rapid clearance and poor membrane permeability. Encapsulation of the peptide or protein into a nano-scale carrier can modify its pharmacokinetics and biodistribution. This might be employed to promote uptake in desired cell types or tissues, to limit systemic exposure, or to reduce the need for frequent injections. We have recently described inverse Flash NanoPrecipitation (iFNP), a scalable technique to encapsulate water-soluble therapeutics into polymeric nanocarriers, and have demonstrated improvements in therapeutic loading of an order of magnitude over comparable approaches. Here, we describe the formulation parameters that control release rates of encapsulated model therapeutics polymyxin B, lysozyme, and bovine serum albumin from nanocarriers produced using iFNP. Using a neutropenic lung infection mouse model with a multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolate, we demonstrate enhanced therapeutic effect and safety profile afforded by nanocarrier-encapsulated polymyxin B following pulmonary administration. The encapsulated formulation reduced toxicity observed at elevated doses and resulted in up to 2.7-log10 reduction in bacterial burden below that of unencapsulated polymyxin B. These results establish the promise of iFNP as a platform for nanocarrier delivery of water-soluble therapeutics.

BACKGROUND: Pathologic diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) can be challenging in differentiating from benign and non-hepatocytic malignancy lesions. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential utility of α-fetoprotein (AFP) mRNA RNAscope, a sensitive and specific method, in the diagnosis of HCC. METHODS: Three independent retrospective cohorts containing 2216 patients with HCC, benign liver lesions, and non-hepatocytic tumours were examined. AFP was detected using ELISA, IHC (Immunohistochemistry), and RNAscope. Glypican3 (GPC3), hepatocyte paraffin-1 (HepPar-1), and arginase-1 (Arg-1) proteins were detected using IHC. RESULTS: AFP RNAscope improved the HCC detection sensitivity by 24.7-32.7% compared with IHC. In two surgical cohorts, a panel of AFP RNAscope and GPC3 provided the best diagnostic value in differentiating HCC from benign hepatocytic lesions (AUC = 0.905 and 0.811), and a panel including AFP RNAscope, GPC3, HepPar-1, and Arg-1 yielded the best AUC (0.971 and 0.977) when distinguishing HCC from non-hepatocytic malignancies. The results from the liver biopsy cohort were similar, and additional application of AFP RNAscope improved the sensitivity by 18% when distinguishing HCC from benign hepatocytic lesions. CONCLUSIONS: AFP mRNA detected by RNAscope is highly specific for hepatocytic malignancy and may serve as a novel diagnostic biomarker for HCC.

To provide the basis for clinical diagnosis in an emergency case, a portable smartphone device-based multi-signal sensing system for on-site determination of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is introduced. In this system, cobalt hydroxide (CoOOH) nanoflakes can oxidize O-phenylenediamine (OPD) to produce 2,3-diaminophenazine (OxOPD), resulting in a strong fluorescence at 565 nm and an absorbance at 420 nm, respectively. The ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AAP) can be hydrolyzed by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) to yield ascorbic acid (AA). Then, AA reduces the CoOOH nanoflakes to produce Co2+, and AA is oxidized to form dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA), thereby inhibiting the formation of OxOPD. The reaction product DHAA further combines with OPD to yield 3-(1,2-dihydroxyethyl)furo[3,4-b]quinoxalin-1(3H)-one (DFQ) accompanied by a strong fluorescence at 430 nm. Based on this, the fluorometric assay for ALP has a wide linear range from 0.8 to 190 U/L with a low detection limit of 0.16 U/L, and the colorimetric assay from 3 to 130 U/L with a detection limit of 1.94 U/L. Moreover, a portable smartphone sensing platform integrated with fluorescent and colorimetric signals was established for rapid determination of ALP without spectrometers. Recoveries of 97-104% for spiked samples and relative standard deviations (RSD) of less than 2% (n = 3) confirmed the feasibility of the developed platform in complicated samples, opening up new horizons for on-site evaluation in the biomedical field.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of anatomic thoracoscopic pulmonary segmentectomy performed based on three-dimensional computed tomography bronchography and angiography (3D-CTBA) in children and infants. METHODS: Totally, 22 patients received thoracoscopic segmentectomy from October 2019 to February 2020. The procedures were performed virtual segmentectomy based on 3D-CTBA. The preoperative planning depended on the 3D-CTBA result. RESULTS: All of the 22 cases ( 1 left S1, 1 right S3, 1 left S1 + 2, 1 left S1 + 2 + 3, 1 left S4 + 5, 1 right S6, 1 right S10, 1 left S10, 2 right S9 + 10, 3 left S9 + 10, 1 right S7 + 8 + 9 + 10, 8 left S7 + 8 + 9 + 10) were received thoracoscopic segmentectomy successfully. The mean procedure length was 76.6 ± 17.2 min, and the intraoperative blood loss was 16.5 ± 2.8 ml. The mean duration of chest tube insertion was 3.2 ± 0.7 days, and the mean hospital stay was 8.2 ± 2.8 days. Postoperative complications included infection (n = 1), atelectasis (n = 1), hydropneumothorax (n = 1) and pneumothorax (n = 1). No recurrence or mortality was observed during the short-term follow-up period of 3 months. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the 3D-CTBA technique, the specific pulmonary segments invaded by the lesions and the relationship between the corresponding pulmonary vessels and bronchi can be acknowledged before the operation, which is of positive significance for the resection of complex pulmonary segments and good preoperative surgical planning. It's worth popularizing in the pediatric population.

(1) Background: Job burnout may affect the prognosis of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) through mechanisms involving heart rate variability (HRV). However, no study has yet examined those potential associations. Hence, we conducted the present study to investigate this issue. (2) Method: Participants included patients who presented with a first episode of ACS and who were employed. The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) was used to assess job burnout. Twenty-four-hour ambulatory electrocardiography recorded HRV on four occasions, i.e., during the hospitalization and follow-ups at one, six, and 12 months, respectively. (3) Results: A total of 120 participants who at least completed three Holter examinations throughout the study were enrolled in the final analysis. Job burnout scores at baseline were inversely associated with LnSDNN, LnTP, LnHF, LnLF, LnULF, and LnVLF during the consequent one-year follow-up. Each 1 SD increase in job burnout scores predicted a decline ranging from 0.10 to 0.47 in the parameters described above (all p < 0.05), and all relationships were independent of numerous confounders, including anxiety and depression. (4) Conclusion: High job burnout predicted reduced HRV parameters during the one-year period post-ACS in the working population.

The synapse is a highly specialized and dynamic structure, which is involved in regulating neurotransmission. Nerve cell adhesion molecule is a kind of transmembrane protein that mediates the interaction between cells and cells, cells and extracellular matrix, and plays a role in cell recognition, metastasis, and transmembrane signal transduction. Among nerve cell adhesion molecules, Neurexins (NRXNs) and Neuroligins (NLGNs) have been focused due to the relation with autism and other neuropsychiatric diseases. The previous research discovered numerous variants in NRXNs and NLGNs reported in neurodevelopmental disorders by genomic sequencing. However, structural variants in synaptic molecules caused by genome variants still prevent us from understanding the molecular mechanism of diseases. Thus, we sought to conduct a comprehensive risk assessment of the known NRXN and NLGN gene variants by protein structure analysis. In this study, we analyzed the structural properties of the NRXN/NLGN complex by calculating free energy in residue scanning, in combination with existing risk evaluation tools to focus on candidate missense mutations. Our calculations show that five candidate missense mutations in NLGNs can reduce the stability of NLGNs and even prevent the formation of NRXN/NLGN complexes, namely R87W, R204H, R437H, R437C and R583W. In addition, we found that the affinity of the amino acid substitution (Leu593Phe) (ΔΔG(affinity)) changes the affinity of the NLGN dimer. Overall, we have identified important potential pathological variants that provide clues to biomarkers.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis (canine Echinococcus disease) is a neglected tropical disease that causes serious public harm. Dogs, as a terminal host of Echinococcus spp., are a key part of the Echinococcus epidemic. Echinococcosis spreads easily in humans and animals in some areas of China and it is therefore necessary to fully understand the prevalence of Echinococcus spp. in dogs. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: PubMed, ScienceDirect, Chongqing VIP, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and WanFang databases were searched for relevant articles published in the past 10 years. A final total of 108 studies were included. The overall prevalence of Echinococcus spp. in dogs in China was 7.3%, with the highest point estimate found in sampling year 2015 (8.2%) and publication year 2015 (16.5%). Northwestern China (7.9%) had the highest infection rate in China. Qinghai Province (13.5%) showed the highest prevalence among the 11 provinces we included. We also found that geographical and climatic factors are related to the incidence of canine echinococcosis. We further investigated the source of heterogeneity by analysis of subgroups (sampling district, detection method, dog type, season, parasite species, medication, and study quality level). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our research indicated that Echinococcus spp. were still prevalent in some areas in China. More localized prevention and control policies should be formulated, including improving drinking water hygiene and strengthening hygiene promotion. We recommend the rational use of anti-Echinococcus drugs. In addition, treatment of livestock offal and feces and improving the welfare of stray dogs may play an important role in reducing canine Echinococcus infections.

Two key factors bear on reaction rates for the conjugate addition of alkenyl boronic acids to heteroaryl-appended enones: the proximity of inductively electron-withdrawing heteroatoms to the site of bond formation and the resonance contribution of available heteroatom lone pairs to stabilize the developing positive charge at the enone ß-position. For the former, the closer the heteroatom is to the enone ß-carbon, the faster the reaction. For the latter, greater resonance stabilization of the benzylic cationic charge accelerates the reaction. Thus, reaction rates are increased by the closer proximity of inductive electron-withdrawing elements, but if resonance effects are involved, then increased rates are observed with electron-donating ability. Evidence for these trends in isomeric substrates is presented, and the application of these insights has allowed for reaction conditions that provide improved reactivity with previously problematic substrates.
