RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To systematically assess the perioperative outcomes of retroperitoneal (RP) and transperitoneal (TP) approaches in robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN), we conducted an updated meta-analysis. METHODS: A literature retrieval of multi-database including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, and CNKI was performed to identify eligible comparative studies from the inception dates to January 2021. Perioperative outcomes included operative time (OT), estimated blood loss (EBL), warm ischemia time (WIT), postoperative length of stay (PLOS), positive surgical margin (PSM), and complications (major complications and overall complications). Outcomes of data were pooled and analyzed with Review Manager 5.4.1. RESULTS: Twenty-one studies involving a total of 2482 RP and 3423 TP approach RAPN patients met the inclusion criteria. Operating time (OT) (weighted mean difference [WMD] -16.60; 95% confidence interval [CI] -23.08, -10.12; p < 0.01) and PLOS (WMD -0.46 days; 95% CI -0.69, -0.23; p < 0.01) were shorter in RP-RAPN. Besides, lower EBL (WMD -21.67; 95% CI -29.74, -13.60; p < 0.05) was also found in RP-RAPN. Meanwhile, no significant differences were found in other outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: RP-RARN was superior to TP-RAPN in patients undergoing RAPN in terms of OT, PLOS, and estimated blood loss. Besides these two approaches have no significant differences in PSMs or perioperative complications.

BACKGROUND: Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is currently recognized as a promising biomarker for myocardial fibrosis. This study aimed to explore the potential association between plasma Gal-3 concentrations and atrial fibrillation (AF) progression in paroxysmal AF (PAF) patients METHODS: A total of 213 PAF patients were included for analysis in this study. All peripheral blood samples were prospectively collected and stored at -80℃ for subsequent Gal-3 quantification. The AF progression was defined as transformation from PAF to persistent AF (PsAF). RESULTS: A total of 51 PAF patients progressed to PsAF during a mean follow-up period of 674.44 ± 19.48 days. Patients with AF progression had significantly higher baseline plasma Gal-3 concentrations than those stayed in PAF status (13.52 ± 0.94 vs. 7.93 ± 0.37, p < 0.001). All PAF patients were divided into two subgroups based on the median value of plasma Gal-3 concentrations. Kaplan-Meier curve analysis showed a significantly higher AF progression rate in the higher plasma Gal-3 concentration group (log-rank test p < 0.001). In the Cox regression analysis, plasma Gal-3 concentration and left atrial diameter (LAD) were showed significantly associated with AF progression, even after adjustment of other potential confounding risk factors. Discrimination for AF progression with a simple model which consists of plasma Gal-3 concentration and LAD was modest with a C-statistic 0.72 (95%CI 0.64-0.80). Plasma Gal-3 concentration significantly improved the predictability by appropriately reclassifying several patients with progression (NRI = 28.3%, p = 0.003). CONCLUSION: Elevated plasma Gal-3 concentration is significantly associated with AF progression from PAF to PsAF. Plasma Gal-3 concentration could be used for PAF progression risk stratification and guiding management for PAF patients.

The majority of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) association studies of salt sensitivity (SS) have focused on SNPs in protein-coding genes rather than on SNPs in noncoding RNAs. This study attempted to identify the association between whole blood microRNA (miRNA)-related SNPs and the risk of SS in a Han Chinese population. A case-control study of 762 individuals was performed. A modified Sullivan's acute oral saline load and diuresis shrinkage test was used to assess SS. All SNPs were analysed by RT-PCR on a Sequenom Mass ARRAY Platform (Sequenom, San Diego, CA, USA). A genetic risk score (GRS) was used to evaluate the joint genetic effect. In total, 24 miRNA-related SNPs were genotyped, four of which (miR-1307-5p/rs11191676, miR-1307-5p/rs2292807, miR-145/rs41291957 and miR-4638-3p/rs6601178) were associated with both SS and salt sensitivity of blood pressure (SSBP) (p ≤ 0.05). MiR-382-5p/rs4906032 and miR-15b-5/rs10936201 were associated with SSBP. Weighted GRS showed that participants in the second, third and fourth quartiles had 1.760-fold (95% CI: 1.068-2.903), 2.450-fold (95% CI: 1.470-4.083) and 2.774-fold (95% CI: 1.680-4.582) increased risk of SS, respectively. Bioinformatics analysis indicated that these four SNP risk alleles may affect transcription factor binding and influence promoter activity. A total of six miRNA-related SNPs were found to be associated with SS or SSBP, and the presence of multiple risk alleles resulted in increased risk level.

A zwitterionic ligand 3-(triethylammonio)propyne (TAP) has been employed to construct nine silver ethynide compounds for the first time. Single-crystal X-ray analyses reveal that compounds 1 and 2 are silver ethynide assemblies based on the Ag3 subunits and clusters 3-8 are small discrete clusters of Ag3, Ag6, Ag8, and Ag12, respectively, ligated by the bulky TAP ligand with different auxiliary ligands. In addition, upon acquiring the tripod-like tBuPO32-, a unprecedented 80 nuclei silver ethynide cluster was isolated and determined to be [(CF3CO2)5@Ag80(TAP)14(tBuPO3)16(CF3CO2)24]19+ by crystallography and thermogravimetric analysis. The C1 symmetry of Ag80 was deconstructed to be two [Ag40(TAP)7(tBuPO3)8(CF3CO2)12]12+ secondary building subunits arranged in a cross way, with five CF3CO2- trapped in the center. These results highlight that the elaborate selection of ethynide ligands is of great importance in the synthesis of novel silver ethynide clusters.

RESUMEN

The broad learning system (BLS) has been identified as an important research topic in machine learning. However, the typical BLS suffers from poor robustness for uncertainties because of its characteristic of the deterministic representation. To overcome this problem, a type-2 fuzzy BLS (FBLS) is designed and analyzed in this article. First, a group of interval type-2 fuzzy neurons was used to replace the feature neurons of BLS. Then, the representation of BLS can be improved to obtain good robustness. Second, a fuzzy pseudoinverse learning algorithm was designed to adjust the parameter of type-2 FBLS. Then, the proposed type-2 FBLS was able to maintain the fast computational nature of BLS. Third, a theoretical analysis on the convergence of type-2 FBLS was given to show the computational efficiency. Finally, some benchmark and practical problems were used to test the merits of type-2 FBLS. The experimental results indicated that the proposed type-2 FBLS can achieve outstanding performance.

BACKGROUND: People with mental illness (PWMI) often suffer from public stigma, which can make them unwilling to seek help and reduce access to early treatment. The aims of this study were to determine attitudes towards PWMI among the general public in a Chinese sample and to explore the relationships with sociodemographic characteristics. METHODS: A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted from March to June 2019. The participants' attitudes towards PWMI were evaluated by the Chinese version of the Social Distance Scale (SDSC). An independent-sample T-test and one-way ANOVA were used to determine the association of categorical variables with the outcome variable. Multiple linear regression and Spearman correlations were computed to explore the correlation between SDSC scores and individual-level socioeconomic status (SES). RESULTS: A total of 1437 participants were recruited, and their total SDSC score was 12.53 (SD: 3.11). Univariate analysis results showed that age, education level, educational attainment, and individual-level SES as well as whether they were caregivers/family members of PWMI were correlated with SDSC scores. The results of regression analysis showed a significant effect caused by contact or familiarity with PWMI (B = -1.134, ß = -.190, P < 0.001), as well as for individual-level SES (B = -.339, ß = -.110, P < 0.001). Spearman correlation results showed that SDSC scores were negatively correlated with individual-level SES (r = -.078, p < 0.01) and contact or familiarity with PWMI (r = -.168, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This study reveals that public stigma towards PWMI is common in Southwest China. Individuals who are not a family member or a caregiver of PWMI or have low education level or low individual-level SES need to be provided more anti-stigma interventions. Contacting with PWMI is also a potentially beneficial measure to reduce social distance.

Cigarette smoke (CS)-induced macrophage activation and airway epithelial injury are both critical for the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), while the eventual functions of autophagy in these processes remain controversial. We have recently developed a novel COPD mouse model which is based on the autoimmune response sensitized by CS and facilitated by elastin. In the current study, we therefore utilized this model to investigate the roles of autophagy in different stages of the development of bronchitis-like airway inflammation. Autophagic markers were increased in airway epithelium and lung tissues, and Becn+/- or Lc3b-/ - mice exhibited reduced neutrophilic airway inflammation and mucus hyperproduction in this COPD mouse model. Moreover, treatment of an autophagic inhibitor 3-methyladenine (3-MA) either during CS-initiated sensitization or during elastin provocation significantly inhibited the bronchitis-like phenotypes in mice. Short CS exposure rapidly induced expression of matrix metallopeptidase 12 (MMP12) in alveolar macrophages, and treatment of doxycycline, a pan metalloproteinase inhibitor, during CS exposure effectively attenuated the ensuing elastin-induced airway inflammation in mice. CS extract triggered MMP12 expression in cultured macrophages, which was attenuated by autophagy impairment (Becn+/- or Lc3b-/ -) or inhibition (3-MA or Spautin-1). These data, taken together, demonstrate that autophagy mediates both the CS-initiated MMP12 activation in macrophages and subsequent airway epithelial injury, eventually contributing to development COPD-like airway inflammation. This study reemphasizes that inhibition of autophagy as a novel therapeutic strategy for CS-induced COPD.

Promoting the initially deficient but cost-effective catalysts to high-performing competitors is of significance in developing better catalysts. Spinel zinc cobalt oxide (ZnCo 2 O 4 ) is not considered as a superior catalyst for the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is the bottleneck reaction in water-electrolysis. Herein, taking advantage of density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we find that the existence of low-spin (LS) state cobalt cations hinders the OER activity of spinel zinc cobalt oxide, as the t 2g 6 e g 0 configuration gives rise to purely localized electronic structure and exhibits poor binding affinity to the key reaction intermediate. Increasing the spin state of cobalt cations in spinel ZnCo 2 O 4 is found to propagate a spin channel to promote spin-selected charge transport during OER and generate better active sites for intermediates adsorption. The experiments find increasing the calcination temperature a facile approach to engineer high-spin (HS) state cobalt cations in ZnCo 2 O 4 , while not working for Co 3 O 4 . The activity of the best spin-state-engineered ZnCo 2 O 4 outperforms other typical Co-based oxides. Our work pinpoints the critical influence of the spinel composition on the splitting energy of the metals and further on the feasibility of spin state engineering.

The cingulo-opercular network (CON), dorsal attention network (DAN), and ventral attention network (VAN) are prominently activated during attention tasks. The function of these task-positive networks and their interplay mechanisms in attention is one of the central issues in understanding how the human brain manipulates attention to better adapt to the external environment. This study aimed to clarify the CON, DAN, and VAN's functional hierarchy by assessing causal interactions. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from human participants performing a visual-spatial attention task and correlating Granger causal influences with behavioral performance revealed that CON exerts behavior-enhancing influences upon DAN and VAN, indicating a higher level of CON in top-down attention control. By contrast, the VAN exerts a behavior-degrading influence on CON, indicating external disruption of the CON's control set.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the treatment outcomes of multidrug and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (M/XDR-TB) in Zhejiang, China and to evaluate possible risk factors associated with poor outcomes of M/XDR-TB. METHODS: Two-hundred-and-sixty-two patients having M/XDR-TB who received the diagnosis and treatment at nine referral hospitals from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2016 in Zhejiang, China were included. All patients received second-line regimens recommended by WHO under the DOTS-Plus strategy. RESULTS: Among the 262 patients, the treatment success rate was 55.34% (n = 145) with 53.44% (n = 140) cured and 1.91% (n = 5) who completed treatment, 62 (23.66%) failed, 27 (10.31%) died, 16 (6.11%) defaulted and 12 (4.58%) transferred out. Forty (64.52%) of the 62 M/XDR-TB patients who failed treatment were due to adverse effects in the first 10 months of treatment. Eighteen patients (6.37%) had XDR-TB. Treatment failure was significantly higher among patients with XDR-TB at 50% than that among patients with non-XDR-TB at 21.72% (P = 0.006). Failure outcomes were associated with a baseline weight less than 50 kg (OR, 8.668; 95% CI 1.679-44.756; P = 0.010), age older than 60 years (OR, 9.053; 95% CI 1.606-51.027; P = 0.013), hemoptysis (OR, 8.928; 95% CI 1.048-76.923; P = 0.045), presence of cavitary diseases (OR, 10.204; 95% CI 2.032-52.631; P = 0.005), or treatment irregularity (OR, 47.619; 95% CI 5.025-500; P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Treatment outcomes for M/XDR-TB under the DOTS-Plus strategy in Zhejiang, China were favorable but still not ideal. Low body weight (< 50 kg), old age (> 60 years), severe symptoms of TB including cavitary disease, hemoptysis and irregular treatment were independent prognostic factors for failure outcomes in patients with M/XDR-TB.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are ubiquitous contaminants in the environment, whereas their atmospheric processes and fate are poorly understood. The present study revealed the spatial heterogeneity and seasonal variations of traditional and novel OPEs in PM2.5 (particulate matter with diameters < 2.5 µm) across a megacity (including residential areas and potential source sites) in South China. Potential influencing factors on the contamination levels of OPEs were addressed. The total concentrations of 11 traditional OPEs ranging from 262 to 42,194 pg/m3 (median = 1872 pg/m3) were substantially higher than those of 10 novel OPEs (33.5-3835 pg/m3, median = 318 pg/m3). Significant spatial and temporal variations in the concentrations of most OPEs were observed. The overall district-specific contamination levels in this city showed dependence on the secondary industry sector for non-predominant OPEs and on the tertiary industry for predominant OPEs. The seasonal variations of the OPE concentrations suggest difference in their sources or influence of meteorological conditions. The correlations between the individual OPEs in PM2.5 are determined largely by either their applications or physicochemical properties (in particular vapor pressure). The correlations between OPE concentrations and each meteorological factor (temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and surface solar radiation) were inconsistent (positive and negative). Wind speed had the greatest effect on the OPE levels; While most OPEs bound to PM2.5 were not efficiently scavenged by below-cloud rainfall. The results suggest that atmospheric half-life and Henry's Law Constant of OPEs are also determining factors for the wind speed and rainfall influence, respectively. However, mechanisms underlying the influence of meteorological conditions on atmospheric OPEs still need further research.

A practical and efficient protocol toward fully substituted isothiazolones through Selectfluor-mediated intramolecular oxidative annulation of α-carbamoyl ketene dithioacetals has been developed in the presence of H2O and metal-free conditions. Notably, the experimental results reveal that H2O was crucial to the formation of new N-S bonds and the elimination of alkyl group from the sulfur atom. This protocol provides readily prepared substrates and possesses good functional group tolerance, mild reaction conditions, and operational simplicity, which provides potential access to applications in the pharmaceutical chemistry.

The pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an ingenious way to synthesize carbon-based materials with unique morphology for various applications including electrocatalysis. In this work, we reported a facile morphology regulation strategy for the synthesis of a spherical superstructure of MOF nanosheets. The use of metal hydroxide nanosheets on Zn particles as precursors/templates allowed MOFs with general polyhedron shape to form nanosheets and assemble into a spherical superstructure in the ligand solution. Further, a hollow spherical superstructure of carbon nanosheets decorated with metal-based nanoparticles was fabricated through the pyrolysis of MOF nanosheet superstructures at 950 °C, where the substrate/template Zn particle cores were evaporated away. The obtained composites possess carbon-based superstructures with abundant mesopores and metal-based nanoparticles with rich alloy/oxide interfaces. These features endow this MOF-derived carbon-based material with outstanding bifunctional activity for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions and great performances in Zn-air batteries.

AIMS: To investigate the nuclear receptor subfamily 2 group E member 1 (Nr2e1) expression in adipose tissues of obese mice and assess the role of Nr2e1 in insulin resistance and chronic inflammation of the adipose tissues. MAIN METHODS: An obese model was established in Nr2e1 knockout (KO) mice and their wild type (WT) littermates through a long-term high-fat diet (HFD) feeding regime. The epididymal fat weight, body weight, and daily food intake were recorded. The blood lipid profile, blood inflammatory factors, and the levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG) and fasting insulin were determined. We estimated insulin resistance by the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA). The expression of inflammatory factors and F4/80 was examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and western blotting to assess adipose tissues inflammation. We also determined the molecules of insulin signaling and the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) pathway by western blotting. KEY FINDINGS: The Nr2e1 expression was upregulated in WT obese mice when compared with that in control mice. Despite a lower body weight and epididymal fat mass in Nr2e1-/- mice, these rats showed increased inflammatory cytokines secretion, more pronounced hyperlipidemia, and impaired insulin sensitivity after HFD treatment. Further investigation revealed that Nr2e1 deletion affected the expression of insulin signaling and NF-κB pathway-related molecules in visceral adipose tissues. SIGNIFICANCE: Nr2e1 may act as a potential target to improve insulin sensitivity and inflammation in obesity and related complications.

Stem cell transplantation may represent a feasible therapeutic option for the recovery of neurological function in children with hypoxic-ischemic brain injury; however, the therapeutic efficacy of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells largely depends on the number of cells that are successfully transferred to the target. Magnet-targeted drug delivery systems can use a specific magnetic field to attract the drug to the target site, increasing the drug concentration. In this study, we found that the double-labeling using superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle and poly-L-lysine (SPIO-PLL) of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells had no effect on cell survival but decreased cell proliferation 48 hours after labeling. Rat models of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury were established by ligating the left common carotid artery. One day after modeling, intraventricular and caudal vein injections of 1 × 105 SPIO-PLL-labeled bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells were performed. Twenty-four hours after the intraventricular injection, magnets were fixed to the left side of the rats' heads for 2 hours. Intravoxel incoherent motion magnetic resonance imaging revealed that the perfusion fraction and the diffusion coefficient of rat brain tissue were significantly increased in rats treated with SPIO-PLL-labeled cells through intraventricular injection combined with magnetic guidance, compared with those treated with SPIO-PLL-labeled cells through intraventricular or tail vein injections without magnetic guidance. Hematoxylin-eosin and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) staining revealed that in rats treated with SPIO-PLL-labeled cells through intraventricular injection under magnetic guidance, cerebral edema was alleviated, and apoptosis was decreased. These findings suggest that targeted magnetic guidance can be used to improve the therapeutic efficacy of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell transplantation for hypoxic-ischemic brain injury. BACKGROUND In addition to sociodemographic and COVID-19- related factors, the needs of school support, including material, psychological and information support, have seldom been discussed as factors influencing anxiety and depression among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 3351 college students from China were surveyed through questionnaires about their sociodemographic and COVID-19 characteristics, the needs of school support, and their experiences with anxiety and depression. RESULTS Anxiety and depression were reported by 6.88% and 10.50% of students, respectively. Married, higher education, non-medical, and urban students had significantly higher risks of anxiety or depression. Additionally, symptoms such as cough and fever, especially when following a possible contact with suspected individuals, quarantine history of a personal contact, going out 1-3 times a week, not wearing a mask, and spending 2-3 hours browsing COVID-19-related information were significantly associated with the occurrence of anxiety or depression. Those who used methods to regulate their emotional state, used a psychological hotline, and who had visited a psychiatrist showed higher anxiety or depression. Those who used online curricula and books, used preventive methods for COVID-19, and who had real-time information about the epidemic situation of the school showed lower anxiety and depression. CONCLUSIONS In addition to sociodemographic and COVID-19-related aspects, students' needs for psychological assistance and information from schools were also associated with anxiety and depression among college students.

GaTe has recently attracted significant interest due to its direct bandgap and unique phase structure, which makes it a good candidate for optoelectronics. However, the controllable growth of large-sized monolayer and few-layer GaTe with tunable phase structures remains a great challenge. Here the controlled growth of large-sized GaTe with high quality, chemical uniformity, and good reproducibility is achieved through liquid-metal-assisted chemical vapor deposition method. By using liquid Ga, the rapid growth of 2D GaTe flakes with high phase-selectivity can be obtained due to its reduced reaction temperature. In addition, the method is used to synthesize many Ga-based 2D materials and their alloys, showing good universality. Raman spectra suggest that the as-grown GaTe own a relatively weak van der Waals interaction, where monoclinic GaTe displays highly-anisotropic optical properties. Furthermore, a p-n junction photodetector is fabricated using GaTe as a p-type semiconductor and 2D MoSe2 as a typical n-type semiconductor. The GaTe/MoSe2 heterostructure photodetector exhibits large photoresponsivity of 671.52 A W-1 and high photo-detectivity of 1.48 × 1010 Jones under illumination, owing to the enhanced light absorption and good quality of as-grown GaTe. These results indicate that 2D GaTe is a promising candidate for electronic and photoelectronic devices.

ABSTRACT: Single-cell RNA-seq has become a powerful tool to understand tumor cell heterogenicity. This study tried to screen prognosis-related genes in basal-like breast tumors and evaluate their correlations with cellular states at the single-cell level.Bulk RNA-seq data of basal-like tumor cases from The Cancer Genome Atlas-Breast Cancer (TCGA-BRCA) and single-cell RNA-seq from GSE75688 were retrospectively reviewed. Kaplan-Meier survival curves, univariate and multivariate analysis based on Cox regression model were conducted for survival analysis. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) and single-cell cellular functional state analysis were performed.Twenty thousand five hundred thirty genes with bulk RNA-seq data in TCGA were subjected to screening. Preliminary screening identified 10 candidate progression-related genes, including CDH19, AQP5, SDR16C5, NCAN, TTYH1, XAGE2, RIMS2, GZMB, LY6D, and FAM3B. By checking their profiles using single-cell RNA-seq data, only CDH19, SDR16C5, TTYH1, and RIMS2 had expression in primary triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells. Prognostic analysis only confirmed that RIMS2 expression was an independent prognostic indicator of favorable progression free survival (PFS) (HR: 0.78, 95%: 0.64-0.95, P  = .015). GSEA analysis showed that low RIMS2 group expression had genes significantly enriched in DNA Repair, and MYC Targets V2. Among the 89 basal-like cells, RIMS2 expression was negatively correlated with DNA repair and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT).RIMS2 expression was negatively associated with DNA repair capability of basal-like breast tumor cells and might serve as an independent indicator of favorable PFS.

Natural orifice specimen extraction surgery (NOSES) is an intra-abdominal procedure that does not require an auxiliary incision to take a surgical sample from the abdominal wall through the natural orifice, but there are few systematic clinical studies on it. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the safety and feasibility of NOSES. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data and follow-up of 165 patients with low rectal cancer who underwent NOSES or conventional laparoscopic surgery at our center from January 2013 to June 2015. From the perioperative data and postoperative follow-up results of both groups, patients in the NOSES group had less intraoperative bleeding (49.3 ± 55.8 ml vs. 75.1 ± 57.3 ml, p = 0.02), shorter postoperative gastrointestinal recovery (42.3 ± 15.5 h vs. 50.1 ± 17.0 h, p = 0.01), less postoperative analgesic use (35.6% vs. 57.6%, p = 0.02), lower postoperative pain scores, lower rate of postoperative complications (6.8% vs. 25.4%, p = 0.01), better satisfaction of the image and cosmesis of the abdominal wall postoperatively, and higher quality of life. Moreover, there was no significant difference in overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) between two groups. Overall, NOSES is a safe and reliable minimally invasive surgical technique for patients with low rectal cancer.

Pipelines serve as the major infrastructure for transmission and distribution in oil and gas and water industries. The health condition of a metallic pipe is determined mainly by the extent to which it is corroded. Thus, the quantification of pitting corrosion in terms of metal loss is required for the understanding of pipe condition. There are different ways to quantify corrosion pit geometry. Direct methods measure the pit depth of pipe samples, which are sand/grit blasted to remove corrosion products, and are often adopted in the laboratory. Indirect methods employ non-destructive inspection techniques to detect and quantify the corrosion without sandblasting, which is preferred for a field test. In this study, pulsed thermography is considered for the quantification of pitting corrosion in a metallic pipe. Thermography testing can generate a sequence of infrared images, which reflect the diffusion process of heat through the pipe wall. This paper proposes a new deep neural network-based approach to quantify the pitting corrosion damages from the acquired thermography images. Through extensive experimental tests, the quantified results demonstrate a reasonably good linear relationship with metal loss of pipe, as the quantification accuracy was better than 98%.
