BACKGROUND: Although physical activity (PA) and sedentary time in cancer survivors (CSs) were associated with health-related quality of life (HRQOL), it was not clear whether their associations were similar among CSs with different number of comorbid chronic diseases (CCDs). This study aimed to investigate the associations between PA, sedentary time and HRQOL in CSs with different number of CCDs. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1546 CSs between June and September 2018 in Shanghai, China. Data were collected with a self-reported questionnaire including sociodemographic characteristics, CCDs, PA, sedentary time and HRQOL. International Physical Activity Questionnaire and Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core30 were respectively used to measure PA and HRQOL of CSs. Associations of PA and sedentary time with HRQOL among CSs with different number of CCDs were evaluated by using logistic regression, adjusted for confounding factors. RESULTS: About seventy-five percent CSs had at least one CCD. Approximately three fifths CSs had high PA level and < 4 h/day sedentary time. Moderate PA level and high PA level were shown to be associated with better HRQOL among all participants. In CSs with ≤ 2 CCDs, high PA level was significantly associated with higher scores of physical function and lower scores of nausea and vomiting, appetite loss. However, there was a positive association between high PA level and constipation score among CSs with ≥ 3 CCDs. CSs with shorter sedentary time had better HRQOL in those with CCDs. CONCLUSIONS: High PA level and long sedentary time have significant association with worse HRQOL of CSs with ≥ 3 CCDs, while high PA level is positively associated with HRQOL in CSs with ≤ 2 CCDs. Our findings may support further studies of the causal association between PA, sedentary times and HRQOL to provide targeted proposal to improve the HRQOL of CSs according to their number of CCDs.

BACKGROUND: Microglial-mediated neuroinflammation plays an important role in vascular dementia, and modulating neuroinflammation has emerged as a promising treatment target. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) shows anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects in many neurodegenerative disease models, but its role in the chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) is still unclear. METHODS: The bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) was performed to establish CCH models in Sprague-Dawley rats. The rats were given daily intraperitoneal injection of NAD+ for 8 weeks. The behavioral test and markers for neuronal death and neuroinflammation were analyzed. Mitochondrial damage and ROS production in microglia were also assessed. RNA-seq was performed to investigate the mechanistic pathway changes. For in vitro studies, Sirt1 was overexpressed in BV2 microglial cells to compare with NAD+ treatment effects on mitochondrial injury and neuroinflammation. RESULTS: NAD+ administration rescued cognitive deficits and inhibited neuroinflammation by protecting mitochondria and decreasing ROS production in CCH rats. Results of mechanistic pathway analysis indicated that the detrimental effects of CCH might be associated with decreased gene expression of PPAR-γ co-activator1α (PGC-1α) and its upstream transcription factor Sirt1, while NAD+ treatment markedly reversed their decrease. In vitro study confirmed that NAD+ administration had protective effects on hypoxia-induced neuroinflammation and mitochondrial damage, as well as ROS production in BV2 microglia via Sirt1/PGC-1α pathway. Sirt1 overexpression mimicked the protective effects of NAD+ treatment in BV2 microglia. CONCLUSIONS: NAD+ ameliorated cognitive impairment and dampened neuroinflammation in CCH models in vivo and in vitro, and these beneficial effects were associated with mitochondrial protection and ROS inhibition via activating Sirt1/PGC-1α pathway.

RATIONALE: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is an aggressive malignancy that is almost always fatal and lacks effective systemic treatment options. Current treatments of ATC include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, used in combination when possible. In the aspect of immunotherapy, the biomarker of TMB-H and MSI-H may suggest that patients benefit from pembrolizumab. Programmed cell death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) is highly expressed in ATC but has not been written into the guidelines or approved by the FDA as a biomarker for thyroid cancer immunotherapy. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 55-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of a slight right-sided neck enlargement in November 2019. DIAGNOSES: The clinical diagnosis was ATC, pT3bN0M0, and stage IVB. INTERVENTIONS: Oral administration of apatinib (250 mg 3 times daily) was initiated after surgery, but some unpleasant side effects emerged after 1 month of treatment. Next-generation sequencing revealed that the tumor harbored 2 mutations, HRAS p.Q61R and TP53 p.P278S, and PD-L1 staining was positive with a high expression. Thus, camrelizumab (programmed cell death protein 1 inhibitor) was combined with apatinib, and apatinib was changed to 250 mg once a day from March 2020. OUTCOMES: No adverse reactions were observed after the treatment immunotherapy combined with antiangiogenic drugs. Currently, the survival time of patients is more than 11 months, and the quality of life is not affected. CONCLUSION: This case suggests that immunotherapy in patients with ATC based upon PD-L1 evaluation provides a therapeutic option. Targeting programmed cell death protein 1/PD-L1 may provide a much-needed treatment option for patients with advanced ATC.

This study aimed to investigate prolonged screen time and using electronic devices before sleep and their associated factors in elderly people in Shaanxi province of China. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 2647 elderly participants aged 60-88 years. Data were collected through questionnaires. Demographic characteristics, screen time, using electronic devices before sleep, health status, lifestyles, sleep quality, and other associated factors were investigated. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between the associated factors of screen time and using electronic devices before sleep. The crude odds ratio (cOR) and adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. A total of 1784 subjects completed the questionnaire. There were 6.89% participants with prolonged screen time and 13.45% using electronic devices before sleep frequently. Prolonged screen time was associated with personal monthly income (aOR = 1.205, p = 0.001), number of household residents (aOR = 0.860, p = 0.010), rural residents (aOR = 0.617, p = 0.038), and regular drinkers (aOR = 2.889, p < 0.001). Using electronic devices before sleep was associated with being female (aOR = 0.657, p = 0.007), family monthly income (aOR = 0.866, p = 0.002), being an occasional drinker (aOR = 1.891, p = 0.005), and self-reported sleep quality (aOR = 1.593, p = 0.007). In conclusion, several factors related to screen time or using electronic devices before sleep were identified. Only being a drinker was a common associated factor for both screen time and using electronic devices before sleep.

Alzheimer's disease is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder, with no disease-modifying treatment available yet. There is increasing evidence that neuroinflammation plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of AD. Andrographolide (Andro), a labdane diterpene extracted from the herb Andrographis paniculata, has been reported to exhibit neuroprotective property in central nervous system diseases. However, its effects on Aß and Aß-induced neuroinflammation have not yet been studied. In the present study, we found that Andro administration significantly alleviated cognitive impairments, reduced amyloid-ß deposition, inhibited microglial activation, and decreased the secretion of proinflammatory factors in APP/PS1 mice. Furthermore, transcriptome sequencing analysis revealed that Andro could significantly decrease the expression of Itgax, TLR2, CD14, CCL3, CCL4, TLR1, and C3ar1 in APP/PS1 mice, which was further validated by qRT-PCR. Our results suggest that Andro might be a potential therapeutic drug for AD by regulating neuroinflammation.

Glioma is a common life-threatening tumor with high malignancy and high invasiveness. LncRNA ZFPM2 antisense RNA 1 (ZFPM2-AS1) was confirmed to be implicated in numerous tumors, while its biological function and mechanism have not been thoroughly understood in glioma. The gene expression was measured by RT-qPCR. Cell proliferation, cell cycle, and cell apoptosis of glioma cells were validated by CCK-8, colony formation, flow cytometry and TUNEL assays. The effect of ZFPM2-AS1 on tumor growth was verified by in vivo assay. The exploration on ZFPM2-AS1-mediated mechanism was carried out via ChIP, luciferase reporter, and RIP assays. In the present study, ZFPM2-AS1 was demonstrated as a highly-expressed lncRNA in glioma tissues and cells. ZFPM2-AS1 silencing suppressed cell proliferation and cell cycle, but facilitated cell apoptosis. In addition, the inhibitive effect of silenced ZFPM2-AS1 was also observed in tumor growth. Furthermore, we found that SP1 interacted with ZFPM2-AS1 promoter to transcriptionally activate ZFPM2-AS1 expression. Moreover, ZFPM2-AS1 was identified as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) for miR-515-5p to target SOD2. Rescue assays verified that SOD2 overexpression partially abolished the suppressive impact of ZFPM2-AS1 silencing on glioma cell growth. In conclusion, this study corroborated the regulatory mechanism of SP1/ZFPM2-AS1/miR-515-5p/SOD2 axis in glioma, indicating that targeting ZFPM2-AS1 might be an effective way to treat glioma.

Efficient copper-catalyzed 1,2-difunctionalization of alkenes with commercially available BrCH2Cl as a chloromethylating source was carried out, in which mild conditions, high reactivity, excellent functional-group tolerance, and late-stage modification of a bioactive molecule are demonstrated. This strategy offers a solution for the diverse syntheses of nitrogen-containing terminal alkyl chlorides, a common synthetic handle that is promising for multiple derivatizations. Mechanistic studies indicate that a chloromethyl radical is involved in the catalytic cycle.

This study aimed at investigating the sleep status and its associated factors in Shaanxi province, China. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 11,399 subjects in Shaanxi Province, China. Data were collected via spot field questionnaire surveys. The contents included demographic characteristics, sleep status, lifestyles, disease history and other associated factors. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the effect of associated factors on sleep quality. A total of 11,036 subjects were included in the final analysis. In total, 12.8% of the participants had bad or very bad sleep. In the last month, 8.4% of the participants had difficulty in initiating sleep, 7.6% of the participants had difficulty in maintaining sleep, 8.8% of the participants suffered from awakening earlier and 10.3% of the participants had the problem of feeling sleepy during the day ≥3 times per week. Poorer sleep quality was associated with being female, being unmarried or without cohabiting with a boyfriend/girlfriend, being divorced or widowed, heart diseases, musculoskeletal diseases, concerns about their own health, drinking alcohol, taking hypnotics, and a longer daily screen time. Better sleep quality was associated with medium education level, high family monthly income, good self-reported health status, and having breakfast regularly. In conclusion, more than one in ten people did not sleep well and suffered from different sleep problems in Shaanxi, China. Sleep quality was associated with sex, marital status, educational level, family monthly income, heart disease, musculoskeletal diseases, degree of concerning about their own health, self-reported health status, drinking alcohol, having breakfast, taking hypnotics and daily screen time.

BACKGROUND: Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) is regarded as a high-risk factor for cognitive decline in vascular dementia (VaD). We have previously shown that diabetes mellitus (DM) synergistically promotes CCH-induced cognitive dysfunction via exacerbating neuroinflammation. Furthermore, curcumin has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective activities. However, the effects of curcumin on CCH-induced cognitive impairments in DM have remained unknown. METHODS: Rats were fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) and injected with low-dose streptozotocin (STZ), followed by bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO), to model DM and CCH in vivo. After BCCAO, curcumin (50 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally every two days for eight weeks to evaluate its therapeutic effects. Additionally, mouse BV2 microglial cells were exposed to hypoxia and high glucose to model CCH and DM pathologies in vitro. RESULTS: Curcumin treatment significantly improved DM/CCH-induced cognitive deficits and attenuated neuronal cell death. Molecular analysis revealed that curcumin exerted protective effects via suppressing neuroinflammation induced by microglial activation, regulating the triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2)/toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway, alleviating apoptosis, and reducing nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3)-dependent pyroptosis. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our findings suggest that curcumin represents a promising therapy for DM/CCH-induced cognitive impairments.

SLX4 is a scaffold to coordinate the action of structure-specific endonucleases that are required for homologous recombination and DNA repair. In view of ScSLX4 functions in the maintenance and stability of the genome in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we have explored the roles of CaSLX4 in Candida albicans. Here, we constructed slx4Δ/Δ mutant and found that it exhibited increased sensitivity to the DNA damaging agent, methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) but not the DNA replication inhibitor, hydroxyurea (HU). Accordingly, RT-qPCR and western blotting analysis revealed the activation of SLX4 expression in response to MMS. The deletion of SLX4 resulted in a defect in the recovery from MMS-induced filamentation to yeast form and re-entry into the cell cycle. Like many other DNA repair genes, SLX4 expression was activated by the checkpoint kinase Rad53 under MMS-induced DNA damage. In addition, SLX4 was not required for the inactivation of the DNA damage checkpoint, as indicated by normal phosphorylation of Rad53 in slx4Δ/Δ cells. Therefore, our results demonstrate SLX4 plays an important role in cell recovery from MMS-induced DNA damage in C. albicans.

BACKGROUND: To save assessment time and improve the efficiency, it is necessary to find sensitive indicators from the test items of gross motor development in the C-LAP system for children aged 24~36 months and analyze the influencing factors of the passing rate of these indicators. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted among 1354 toddlers (3058 person-times) aged 24 to 36 months in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong between January 2013 and December 2019. A linear regression model and Cox regression model were performed to screen sensitive indicators and explore their influencing factors, respectively. RESULTS: "Walk backwards", "Stand from supine position" and "Hop with one foot at least twice" are the three sensitive indicators for evaluating the development of gross motor function in 24~36 month old children. The child's physiological age at first measurement and region are the two common independent factors influencing the passing rate of the three items, while paternal age and education may influence one or two of them. CONCLUSIONS: "Walk backwards", "Stand from supine position" and "Hop with one foot at least twice" are sensitive indicators for the effective evaluation of the development of gross motor function in 24~36 month old children, and their passing rates are influenced by some demographic variables.

Uroplakin 1A (UPK1A) has recently been found dysregulation in many cancers. However, the functions of UPK1A and its underlying mechanisms in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain poorly understand. In the present study, we found that UPK1A was highly expressed in HCC tumor tissues compared with adjacent non-tumor tissues. Datasets from the Cancer Genome Atlas project (TCGA) and Gene expression Omnibus confirmed that UPK1A was highly expressed in HCC. High expression of UPK1A predicted poor overall survival (OS) in patients with HCC. Univariate and multivariate analysis showed that UPK1A was a significant and independent prognostic predictor for OS of patients with HCC. Functionally, silencing UPK1A suppressed HCC cell glycolysis and proliferation. Mechanistically, hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) directly bound to the hypoxia response elements (HRE) of UPK1A promoter region, which led to the up-regulation of UPK1A under hypoxia. Furthermore, downregulation of UPK1A reduced key enzyme of glycolysis via regulating HIF-1α. Taken together, these data indicates the existence of a positive feedback loop between HIF-1α and UPK1A that modulates glycolysis and proliferation under hypoxia in HCC cells.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of bioactive peptides (BAPT) from animal sources on the development of mouse preantral follicles in vitro. Preantral follicles were isolated and randomly divided into the following groups: an untreated group (control) and three groups supplemented with 20, 40 and 60 µg/mL BAPT, respectively. After establishing the in vitro follicle culture, the gene expression levels and hormone levels were quantified. After in vitro maturation, the developmental rates, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production levels and mitochondrial distributions of MII oocytes were investigated, followed by the analyses of embryonic developmental rates after in vitro fertilization.The results showed that BAPT promoted the growth of mouse preantral follicles. Notably, after 14 d of in vitro culture, the levels of 17 ß-estradiol and progesterone were up-regulated with BAPT treatments. Moreover, the expression levels of Oct4, Bmp15, GDF9, FOXO3, Zp3, FOXL2, Inhibin alpha, SOD2, Catalase, GPx and Bcl-2 in the developing follicles were significantly up-regulated after BAPT treatments (P < 0.05), while BAPT significantly inhibited the expression levels of BAX (P < 0.05). Following BAPT treatments, the ROS production levels of MII oocytes were decreased while the mitochondrial distributions were significantly enhanced. Furthermore, increased maturation rates, fertilization and embryonic developmental rates were found in these BAPT-treated groups (P < 0.05).These results demonstrated that BAPT significantly improved the development of preantral follicles in vitro by reducing ROS-dependent cellular damages and by enhancing mitochondrial distributions, thereby promoting the further applications of animal-derived BAPT in biomedical research.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are attracting extensive interest owing to their low cost and potential for applications in high-density energy storage systems. However, their widespread application is severely plagued by poor cycling stability, inferior rate capability and low coulombic efficiency, which are largely attributed to the shuttling effect of soluble polysulfides. Herein, we report an architecture of an N,P co-doped biological carbon-based covalent sulfur composite (NP@BCCSC), which acts as a cathode for highly robust Li-S batteries. The NP@BCCSC can not only buffer the volume expansion of sulfur during the charge/discharge process, but also shows strong absorption towards soluble polysulfides, which can effectively suppress the shuttling effect. As a cathode for Li-S batteries, the NP@BCCSC with a sulfur content of 20.1% exhibits a reversible capacity of 1190 mA h g-1 (all specific capacities are calculated based on the mass of sulfur) at a current density of 500 mA g-1 after 500 cycles with an average coulombic efficiency of approximately 100%. Moreover, the NP@BCCSC offers a highly robust cycling stability (an ultralow capacity fading rate of 0.0024% per cycle during 15 000 consecutive cycles) and an excellent rate capability (high specific capacity of 920 mA h g-1 even at a current density of 10 000 mA g-1), indicating its great potential for applications in future energy storage systems.

Cisplatin is one of the most widely used platinum-based anticancer chemotherapeutic drugs. However, its low solubility, serious side effects and the development of cisplatin resistance limit its further use in the clinic. Controlling the delivery and release of cisplatin at the targeted site efficiently is a meaningful way to overcome these undesirable side effects of cisplatin. Herein, a tumor targeted and stimuli responsive nano-delivery system for cisplatin was constructed using branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI) as the backbone, disulfide bond as the redox-responsive covalent linker and hyaluronic acid (HA) as targeting recognition unit which can bind selectively to the receptor of CD44, which is highly expressed on the A549 tumor cells. The cisplatin-polyethyleneimine conjugate BPEI-SS-Pt was prepared and the drug loading of cisplatin was up to 32.66 ± 0.06%. After optimized the coating weight ratio of HA and BPEI-SS-Pt, the nanoparticle delivery system HA-(BPEI-SS-Pt)-1/4 outperformed with smaller particle size of 159.0 ± 21.0 nm, narrow polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.069 ± 0.022 and higher cisplatin loading of 29.23 ± 0.18%, showing specific tumor-targeting ability and redox-responsive drug release manner. Moreover, for the treatment of cancer in vivo, it achieved more effective antitumor performance along with minor side effects and systemic toxicity compared with cisplatin which is of great significance for the chemotherapeutic drug in the clinic.

PURPOSE: Less is known about sexual attitudes of breast cancer survivors (BCSs) and its association with sexual activity and sexual dissatisfaction. METHODS: We investigated the proportion of sexual activity and sexual dissatisfaction in a cross-sectional study among 341 Chinese BCSs aged 30-75 years old, and we described their association with sexual attitudes, as well as socio-demographic characteristics, physical health conditions, and mental health problems. RESULTS: Only 83 (24.3%) individuals reported sexual activity in the past year. More than 50% of BCSs considered that sexual activity had adverse impact on their disease recovery. The sexual attitudes such as "sexual activity may impede disease recovery" (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 0.51; 95% confidence interval, 95% CI: 0.30-0.88), "sexual activity may cause cancer recurrence or metastasizes" (AOR = 0.51; 95% CI: 0.30-0.87), and "their partner fear contracting cancer by sexuality" (AOR = 0.47; 95% CI: 0.23-0.98) were significantly associated with decreased likelihood of reporting sexual activity in the past year. Although 201 (58.9%) BCSs reported that breast cancer decreased the frequency of their sexual activity, only 37 (10.9%) had ever discussed sexuality with a doctor to seek advice. CONCLUSIONS: Most Chinese BCSs were sexually inactive. The sexual misconceptions about cancer were great barriers of sexual activity. Professional sexual education and consultation may be regarded as easy and effective intervention measures to correct BCSs' misguided sexual attitudes, and finally improving the overall sexual health for BCSs.

BACKGROUND: Gene therapy remains a significant challenge due to lots of barriers limiting the genetic manipulation technologies. As for non-viral delivery vectors, they often suffer insufficient performance due to inadequate cellular uptake and gene degradation in endosome or lysosome. The importance of overcoming these conserved intracellular barriers is increasing as the delivery of genetic cargo. RESULTS: A surface-functionalized non-viral vector involving the biomimetic mannitol moiety is initiated, which can control the cellular uptake and promote the caveolae-mediated pathway and intracellular trafficking, thus avoiding acidic and enzymatic lysosomal degradation of loaded gene internalized by clathrin-mediated pathway. Different degrees of mannitol moiety are anchored onto the surface of the nanoparticles to form bio-inspired non-viral vectors and CaP-MA-40 exhibits remarkably high stability, negligible toxicity, and significantly enhanced transgene expression both in vitro and in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: This strategy highlights a paradigmatic approach to construct vectors that need precise intracellular delivery for innovative applications.

OBJECTIVE: To study the atherosclerosis (AS), inflammatory factor level, cognitive disorder and vascular endothelial functions in patients with different grades of leukoaraiosis (LA), and to explore the correlations of different grades of LA with cognitive disorder. METHODS: A total of 180 patients with cerebral infarction admitted and treated in the Department of Neurology of our hospital were selected, and they were graded according to the Tarvonen-shcolder standard, with 45 patients in each group. The atherosclerotic plaques of the patients were detected via a color Doppler ultrasound system and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Their inflammatory factor levels were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The cognitive function was scored based on the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), and the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), endothelin (ET) and nitric oxide (NO) were measured to evaluate vascular endothelial functions. RESULTS: According to the comparisons among four groups of the patients, the incidence rate of AS was gradually increased among patients with different grades of LA (p < 0.05). With the aggravation of LA, the levels of inflammatory factors in patients were obviously increased (p < 0.05). LA patients had evidently lowered MMSE scores and levels of SOD and NO, but notably raised inflammatory factors C-reactive protein (CRP) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and vascular endothelial function indices MDA and ET (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The occurrence of LA is implicated with the increasing levels of inflammatory factors in the patients, aggregation of cognitive dysfunction and impairment vascular endothelial functions.

Stimuli-responsive materials are promising paradigm applied to construct diagnostic and therapeutic intracellular controlled release vectors, while highlighting many challenges and opportunities. In this paper, six α-cyclodextrin-based supramolecular nanovectors were constructed and the efficacy of amine groups, stimuli-responsive profiles and endocytic mechanisms were investigated. The results indicated that the designed supermolecules can compact DNA to form stable complexes and display low cytotoxicity. Among them, PRPEI-2 with suitable PEI amine group exhibited enhanced transfecting performance, high dilution stability, nice serum compatibility, and good acid-responsive profiles to enable endosome escape, significantly higher than commercially available transfecting agent PEI25000, the most effective vector studied to date. The endocytic uptake mechanisms involved in the transfection was mainly through clathrin-mediated pathway, which is closely associated with and can be improved by endosome escape. Moreover, PRPEI-2/DNA polyplex can be effectively expressed in vivo even after 48 h via only single tail-vein injection, and the gene expression and main tissue distribution appeared in the testis, liver, brain and spleen. These excellent characteristics demonstrated that the supramolecular PRPEI-2 represents an excellent prospect as stimuli-responsive nanovectors for gene diagnosis and therapy.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer survivors (CSs) often face the dual physical burden of cancer and other comorbid chronic disease (CCD) and have a great deal of psychological distress, such as anxiety and depression. However, the association between CCD and psychological problems remain less clear in CS. This study was performed to investigate the prevalence of anxiety and depression in Chinese CS, and whether CCD have impact on CSs' anxiety and depression. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1546 CSs in Shanghai, China. All participants were asked to complete a questionnaire containing Zung self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), Zung self-rating depression scale (SDS), and questions on sociodemographic characteristics and CCD. Associations between CCDs, and anxiety and depression, were evaluated by using logistic regression, adjusted for confounding factors. RESULTS: The prevalence of anxiety and depression in CSs were 28.2 % and 48.2%, respectively. 74.9% CSs had one or more comorbidities. Almost all CCDs examined showed associations with anxiety, except for CSs with diabetes. CSs with hyperlipidemia, diabetes, heart and cardiovascular diseases, and musculoskeletal diseases had significantly greater depression scores. When compared with those without CCD, CSs with one to two CCDs and greater than or equal to three CCDs had higher risks of anxiety and depression. CONCLUSIONS: Anxiety and depression were more prevalent among CSs who also had CCDs. CCD have significantly negative association with CSs' anxiety and depression. Further cohort research will help deduce the causal relationships between CCDs, and anxiety and depression.
