RESUMEN

To assess functional differences between the microbiomes of individuals with autoimmune risk-associated human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genetics and autoimmune protection-associated HLA, we performed a metagenomic analysis of stool samples from 72 infants in the All Babies in Southeast Sweden general-population cohort and assessed haplotype-peptide binding affinities. Infants with risk-associated HLA DR3-DQ2.5 and DR4-DQ8 had a higher abundance of known pathogen-associated molecular patterns and virulence related genes than infants with protection-associated HLA DR15-DQ6.2. However, there was limited overlap in the type of inflammatory trigger between risk groups. Supported by a high Firmicutes/Bacteroides ratio and differentially abundant flagellated species, genes related to the synthesis of flagella were prominent in those with HLA DR3-DQ2.5. However, this haplotype had a significantly lower likelihood of binding affinity to flagellin peptides. O-antigen biosynthesis genes were significantly correlated with the risk genotypes and absent from protective genotype association, supported by the differential abundance of gram-negative bacteria seen in the risk-associated groups. Genes related to vitamin B biosynthesis stood out in higher abundance in infants with HLA DR3-DQ2.5/DR4-DQ8 heterozygosity compared to those with autoimmune-protective genetics. Prevotella species and genus were significantly abundant in all infant groups with high risk for autoimmune disease. The potential inflammatory triggers associated with genetic risk for autoimmunity have significant implications. These results suggest that certain HLA haplotypes may be creating the opportunity for dysbiosis and subsequent inflammation early in life by clearing beneficial microbes or not clearing proinflammatory microbes. This HLA gatekeeping may prevent genetically at-risk individuals from benefiting from probiotic therapies by restricting the colonization of those beneficial bacteria.

ADHD and ASD are highly heritable and show a high co-occurrence and persistence into adulthood. This study aimed to identify pre and perinatal risk factors, and early psychosocial exposures related to later diagnosis of ADHD, ASD, and their co-occurrence. 16,365 children born 1997-1999 and their families, involved in the prospective population-based ABIS study (All Babies in Southeast Sweden), were included in this sub-study. Pre and perinatal factors and early environmental psychosocial exposures were collected from parental-questionnaires at birth and 1-year follow-up. Diagnoses from birth up to 23 years of age were obtained from the Swedish National Diagnosis Register in 2020. The cumulative incidence of ADHD, ASD, and their co-occurrence in the ABIS-cohort Study were 4.6%, 1.7%, and 1.1%, respectively. Being male was associated with an increased risk for ADHD, ASD, and their co-occurrence (aOR 1.30, 1.56, and 1.91, respectively), while higher household income reduced it (aOR 0.82, 0.73, and 0.64). Serious life events during pregnancy (aOR 1.40) and maternal smoking (aOR 1.51) increased the risk of ADHD, while older maternal age (aOR 0.96), higher parental education (aOR 0.72 maternal and aOR 0.74 paternal) and longer exclusive breastfeeding (aOR 0.72) reduced it. Non-Swedish paternal nationality (aOR 0.40) and higher maternal education (aOR 0.74) were associated with a lower risk of ASD, while a family history of autoimmune diseases increased the risk of the co-occurrence of both disorders (aOR 1.62). Obtained results suggest that the etiology of ADHD, ASD, and their co-occurrence is independently associated with environmental psychosocial predictors. The co-occurrence seems to overlap the etiology of ADHD, in which psychosocial determinants have a larger role, however, it is also independently influenced by a family history of autoimmune diseases.

PURPOSE: Elucidate the prevalence of myopia among young adults from a birth cohort of Swedish children and its relationship to possible risk factors during their childhood. METHODS: Five thousand two hundred young adults, mean 23.4 years and 58% females, participating in the prospective birth cohort All Babies in Southeast Sweden (ABIS) answered a questionnaire including questions regarding health and physical activity, spectacle use, myopia and age at first optical correction. Questionnaires at previous follow-ups at ages 2-3, 5-6 and 8 years included information on type of housing, time outdoors, screen time and hours of reading. Myopia prevalence and associations with potential risk factors were analysed in univariate and multivariate regression models with Bonferroni's correction of p-values. RESULTS: In the ABIS Swedish birth cohort of young adults, the prevalence of myopia was 29%. A univariate logistic regression showed a higher odds ratio for myopia with female gender (OR 1.59; p < 0.05) and a completed and started university education (OR 1.52; p < 0.05). Significantly lower odds ratios were found for hours spent outdoors at 8 years of age (OR 0.82; p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression showed a higher odds ratio for myopia in females (OR 1.52-1.57; p < 0.05) and completed and started university education (OR 1.34-1.49; p < 0.05) in all models. In a model including accommodative effort, measured in diopter hours at 8 years of age, hours spent outdoors were associated with a lower odds ratio for myopia (OR 0.86; p < 0.05). No association could be detected between myopia and the type of housing or near work. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of myopia among young adults in a Swedish birth cohort was lower or unchanged compared to previous data. Female gender, higher education and less time spent outdoors in childhood were associated with an increased risk of developing myopia. Recommendations from child health services and schools should be given to stimulate children to spend enough time outdoors.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between early-life smoking exposure and later risk of inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]. METHODS: We followed 115663 participants from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child [MoBa] and All Babies in Southeast Sweden [ABIS] cohorts from birth [1997-2009] through 2021. IBD was identified through national patient registers. Validated questionnaire data defined maternal smoking during pregnancy, maternal environmental tobacco smoke [ETS] exposure during pregnancy, and child ETS exposure by ages 12 and 36 months. Cox regression was used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios [aHRs] for sex, maternal age, education level, parental IBD, and origin. Cohort-specific estimates were pooled using a random-effects model. RESULTS: During 1 987 430 person-years of follow-up, 444 participants developed IBD [ABIS, 112; MoBa, 332]. Any vs no maternal smoking during pregnancy yielded a pooled aHR of 1.30 [95% CI = 0.97-1.74] for offspring IBD. Higher level of maternal smoking during pregnancy (compared with no smoking, average ≥6 cigarettes/day: pooled aHR = 1.60 [95% CI = 1.08-2.38]) was associated with offspring IBD, whereas a lower smoking level was not (average 1-5 cigarettes/day: pooled aHR = 1.09 [95% CI = 0.73-1.64]). Child ETS exposure in the first year of life was associated with later IBD (any vs no ETS, pooled aHR = 1.32 [95% CI = 1.03-1.69]). Estimates observed for child ETS exposure by 36 months were similar but not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: In this prospective Scandinavian cohort study, children exposed to higher levels of maternal smoking during pregnancy or ETS during the first year of life were at increased risk of later IBD.

AIM: Eating disorders have a serious impact on quality of life, especially when combined with Type 1 diabetes. We investigated eating disorders in relation to factors early in life with some focus on Type 1 diabetes. METHODS: Out of 21,700 children born 1st of Oct 1997-1st of Oct 1999 17,055 (78.6%) were included in ABIS (All Babies in southeast Sweden) and 16,415 had adequate questionnaires. ICD-10 diagnosis from The National Patient Register was merged with the ABIS data. RESULTS: In total 247 individuals, 19 boys (7.7%) and 219 girls (92.3%) out of 16,415 (1.5%) developed eating disorders (EDs), 167 (1.0%) Type 1 diabetes of whom 7 (4.2%) also got eating disorders (ED) (OR 3.25 (1.47-7.28); p = 0.04), all of them years after diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. EDs was associated with high parental education especially in fathers (OR 1.65 (1.09-2.50); p = 0.02) and to at birth anxiety, and depression among mothers. There was no association with the duration of breastfeeding. CONCLUSIONS: Eating disorders are common in girls, with increased risk in high-educated but psychologically vulnerable families. Prevalence is increased in type 1 diabetes. Even modern diabetes treatment needs to be completed with psychological support. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III: Evidence obtained from well-designed cohort or case-control analytic studies.

The brominated flame retardant tetrabromobisphenol A-bis(2,3-dibromo-2-methylpropyl ether) (TBBPA-DBMPE) is a recommended substitute for hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), a banned persistent organic pollutant, yet its potential toxicities remains largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the effects of a long-term exposure to TBBPA-DBMPE at nominal doses of 50 and 1000 µg/kg/d on lipid homeostasis in CD-1 mice, in comparison with 50 µg/kg/d HBCD as a positive control. Male pups received chemical treatments through maternal administration via drinking water from postnatal day 0-21, followed by direct administration through drinking water after weaning. On the 23rd week after treatment, the oral lipid tolerance test revealed that low-dose TBBPA-DBMPE as well as HBCD affected lipid tolerance, although the fasting serum triglyceride (TG) levels were not altered. When chemical treatment was extended to the 32nd week, TBBPA-DBMPE-treated animals displayed adipocyte hypertrophy in both white adipose tissue (eWAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT) and hepatic steatosis, which was largely consistent with the effects of HBCD. These findings indicate that like HBCD, TBBPA-DBMPE led to increased lipid load in mice. Interestingly, we also observed intestinal histological changes, coupled with increased expression of lipid absorption-related genes in both HBCD and TBBPA-DBMPE treatments, suggesting increased lipid absorption. This was supported by in vitro findings that both HBCD and TBBPA-DBMPE promoted lipid accumulation in IEC-6 cells under the stress of oleic acid for 6 h, implying that altered lipid absorption by the intestine may partly contributed to increased lipid load in mice. Overall, the effects of 50 µg/kg/d TBBPA-DBMPE in terms of some parameters were comparable with 50 µg/kg/d HBCD, suggesting that TBBPA-DBMPE may not be an ideal substitute of HBCD.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are childhood-onset disorders associated with functional and psychosocial impairments that may persist into adulthood, leading to serious personal and societal costs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the socio-economic difficulties, physical and mental comorbidities, and psycho-social vulnerabilities associated with ADHD, ASD, and their co-occurrence among young adults. METHODS: 16 365 families with children born 1997-1999, were involved in the prospective population-based ABIS study (All Babies in Southeast Sweden). A total of 6 233 ABIS young adults answered the questionnaire at the 17-19-year follow-up and were included in this case-control study. Diagnoses of ADHD and ASD from birth up to 17 years of age were obtained from the Swedish National Diagnosis Register. N=182 individuals received a single diagnosis of ADHD, n=78 of ASD, and n=51 received both diagnoses and were considered the co-occurrence group. Multiple multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: In the univariate analyses all three conditions were significantly associated with concentration difficulties, worse health quality, lower socio-economic status, lower faith in the future, less control over life, and lower social support. In the adjusted analyses, individuals with ADHD were almost three-times more likely to have less money compared with their friends (aOR 2.86; p < .001), experienced worse sleep quality (aOR 1.50; p = .043) and concentration difficulties (aOR 1.96; p < .001). ASD group were two-fold more likely to experience concentration difficulties (aOR 2.35; p = .002) and tended not to have faith in the future (aOR .63; p = .055), however, showed lesser risk-taking bahaviours (aOR .40; p < .001). Finally, the co-occurrence was significantly associated with unemployment (aOR 2.64; p = .007) and tended to have a higher risk of autoimmune disorders (aOR 2.41; p = .051), however, showed a 51% lower risk of stomach pain (aOR .49; p = .030). CONCLUSIONS: All these conditions significantly deteriorated several areas of life. ADHD/ASD co-occurrence is a heavy burden for health associated with several psychosocial vulnerabilities, that shared a similar morbidity pattern with ADHD although showed less risk cognitive and behavioral profile, similar to the ASD group. Long-term follow-up and support for individuals with these conditions over the life course are crucial.

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes are associated with more diseases than any other region of the genome. Highly polymorphic HLA genes produce variable haplotypes that are specifically correlated with pathogenically different autoimmunities. Despite differing etiologies, however, many autoimmune disorders share the same risk-associated HLA haplotypes often resulting in comorbidity. This shared risk remains an unanswered question in the field. Yet, several groups have revealed links between gut microbial community composition and autoimmune diseases. Autoimmunity is frequently associated with dysbiosis, resulting in loss of barrier function and permeability of tight junctions, which increases HLA class II expression levels and thus further influences the composition of the gut microbiome. However, autoimmune-risk-associated HLA haplotypes are connected to gut dysbiosis long before autoimmunity even begins. This review evaluates current research on the HLA-microbiome-autoimmunity triplex and proposes that pre-autoimmune bacterial dysbiosis in the gut is an important determinant between autoimmune comorbidities with systemic inflammation as a common denominator.

BACKGROUND: Ecological observations suggest a negative relationship between childhood socioeconomic status (SES) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) risk. Individual-level analyses have been inconsistent and mostly lacked refined assessments of SES. We aimed to comprehensively study the association between early-life SES and later IBD. METHODS: This study included 117 493 participants from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child cohort and Swedish All Babies in Southeast Sweden cohorts. Participants were followed from birth (1997-2009) through 2021. IBD was identified through national patient registers. Questionnaire and register data were used to define parental educational level, employment, and household income level. Cox regression estimated adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs), accounting for other SES exposures and covariates (eg, parental IBD). Cohort-specific estimates were pooled using a random-effects model. RESULTS: During 2 024 299 person-years of follow-up, 451 participants were diagnosed with IBD (All Babies in Southeast Sweden cohort, n = 113 and Norwegian Mother, Father and Child cohort, n = 338). Early-life maternal, but not paternal, educational level was associated with later IBD (low vs high educational level; pooled aHR, 1.81; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.16-2.82; and pooled aHR, 1.20; 95% CI, 0.80-1.80; respectively). Having a nonworking mother or father was not significantly associated with IBD (pooled aHR, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.47-1.02; pooled aHR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.45-1.37). High vs low household income level yielded a pooled aHR of 1.33 (95% CI, 0.94-1.89). Overall, results were largely consistent across cohorts. CONCLUSIONS: In this prospective Scandinavian cohort study, low maternal educational level was, independent of other SES and covariates, significantly associated with later IBD in her child. Further research is needed to elucidate factors that may mediate this relationship.


In this Scandinavian birth cohort study with ≥117 000 participants, we used prospectively collected data to investigate the association between early-life socioeconomic status and later inflammatory bowel disease. We found low maternal educational level, independent of covariates, negatively associated with inflammatory bowel disease.

Tetrabromobisphenol A-bis(2,3-dibromopropyl ether) (TBBPA-BDBPE), a commonly used brominated flame retardant as a decabromodiphenyl ether substitute, has been detected in various environmental compartments, but its health hazards remain largely unknown. Our recent study showed that low-dose exposure of male mice to TBBPA-BDBPE from postnatal day (PND) 0 to 56 caused remarkable damage to the microtubule skeleton in Sertoli cells and the blood-testis barrier (BTB) but exerted little effect on conventional reproductive endpoints in adulthood. To investigate whether TBBPA-BDBPE may cause severe reproductive impairments at late reproductive age, here, we extended exposure of historically administrated male mice to 8-month age and allowed them to mate with non-treated females for the evaluation of fertility, followed by a general examination for the reproductive system. As expected, we found that 8-month exposure to 50 µg/kg/d as well as 1000 µg/kg/d TBBPA-BDBPE caused severe damage to the reproductive system, including reduced sperm counts, increased sperm abnormality, histological alterations of testes. Moreover, microtubule damage and BTB-related impairment were still observed following 8-month exposure. Noticeably, high-dose TBBPA-BDBPE-treated mice had fewer offspring with a female-biased sex ratio. All results show that long-term exposure to TBBPA-BDBPE caused severe reproductive impairment, including poor fertility at late reproductive age. It is therefore concluded that slight testicular injuries in early life can contribute to reproductive impairment at late reproductive age, highlighting that alterations in certain non-conventional endpoints should be noticed as well as conventional endpoints in future reproductive toxicity studies.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: While autoantibodies are traditional markers for type 1 diabetes development, we identified gut microbial biomarkers in 1-year-old infants associated with future type 1 diabetes up to 20 years before diagnosis. METHODS: Infants enrolled in the longitudinal general population cohort All Babies In Southeast Sweden (ABIS) provided a stool sample at a mean age of 12.5 months. Samples (future type 1 diabetes, n=16; healthy controls, n=268) were subjected to 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequencing and quantitative PCR. Microbial differences at the taxonomic and core microbiome levels were assessed. PICRUSt was used to predict functional content from the 16S rRNA amplicons. Sixteen infants, with a future diagnosis of type 1 diabetes at a mean age of 13.3±5.4 years, and one hundred iterations of 32 matched control infants, who remained healthy up to 20 years of age, were analysed. RESULTS: Parasutterella and Eubacterium were more abundant in healthy control infants, while Porphyromonas was differentially more abundant in infants with future type 1 diabetes diagnosis. Ruminococcus was a strong determinant in differentiating both control infants and those with future type 1 diabetes using random forest analysis and had differing trends of abundance when comparing control infants and those with future type 1 diabetes. Flavonifractor and UBA1819 were the strongest factors for differentiating control infants, showing higher abundance in control infants compared with those with future type 1 diabetes. Alternatively, Alistipes (more abundant in control infants) and Fusicatenibacter (mixed abundance patterns when comparing case and control infants) were the strongest factors for differentiating future type 1 diabetes. Predicted gene content regarding butyrate production and pyruvate fermentation was differentially observed to be higher in healthy control infants. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: This investigation suggests that microbial biomarkers for type 1 diabetes may be present as early as 1 year of age, as reflected in the taxonomic and functional differences of the microbial communities. The possibility of preventing disease onset by altering or promoting a 'healthy' gut microbiome is appealing. OBJECTIVES: To identify factors affecting early childhood sleep, and investigate the relationship between sleep and overweight/obesity in childhood. STUDY DESIGN: Data were collected using parental-completed questionnaires from N = 10.840 one-year-old children in the prospective ABIS-study (All Babies in Southeast Sweden), followed up until 8 years of age. Chi-squared test and Pearson Correlation were used to assess the relationship between covariates affecting the children's sleep. Subsequently, longitudinal mixed model analyses were used to predict the effect of different sleep dimensions (bedtime, sleep duration, sleep quality, and the number of awakenings) on BMI Z-scores. RESULTS: Children to parents born in Sweden, parents with higher education, non-single parents, non-smoking mothers during pregnancy, and children with fewer siblings, were more likely to have appropriate sleep habits at 1 year age. A greater number of awakenings and nocturnal feeds, and particularly later bedtime (ß = -0.544, p < 0.0001) were linked to shorter sleep duration. Sleep duration early in life was negatively associated with BMI Z-scores (adjusted effect estimate [95% CI]: ß = -0.09, [(-0.15) - (-0.03)], p = 0.005) later. In addition, higher birth weight, small size for gestational age, unhealthy food habits, children of mothers who smoked during pregnancy, and higher parental BMI resulted in higher BMI Z-scores. CONCLUSION: The child's BMI Z-score increases by 0.09 units with every hour shorter sleep duration, indicating that short sleep duration might increase the risk of overweight and obesity in children. Parental educational interventions advising appropriate sleeping patterns should be considered when implementing strategies to combat the development of childhood obesity.

The development of automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIS) revolutionized casework in the friction ridge community. Through the evolution of AFIS development, algorithms have become increasingly sensitive and specific. Internal validation studies conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Laboratory Division's Latent Print Units (LPU) assessed the performance of the Next Generation Identification (NGI) system's latent print matching algorithm under the various encoding methods of the Multi-Biometric Identification System (MBIS) platform for the purpose of casework implementation. Based on the results of these studies, casework practices in the LPU have become more streamlined and efficient. The increase in accuracy of the latent print matching algorithm has reduced the number of candidates compared per search. For fingerprints, the results showed the best indicator for the correct mate being the number one candidate was the difference in score between the first and second candidate. When the score difference was 1200 or higher, the first candidate was mated in 99.3% of the trials. This understanding may allow for additional quality assurance measures to be implemented in casework.

Few countries systematically record and publish detailed information on the types, caliber, and makes of ammunition recovered by law enforcement. This results in a lack of knowledge of the ammunition used in crime, including in the European context. This pilot study examines the utility of ballistic datasets for monitoring illicit ammunition. The ballistic laboratories of four European countries-Denmark, Germany, Sweden, and Switzerland-provided access to non-confidential subsets of their national databases, including the caliber of recovered cartridge cases as well as the year and type of incident in which they were used. The laboratories also shared images of the ammunition headstamp markings, which helped determine each cartridge case's manufacturer and-when known-year of production. The resulting dataset covers 3130 cartridge cases documented by the participating laboratories between 2015 and the first quarter of 2020. Although limited in scope-the research team did not have access to geocoded data so spatial comparisons were limited to the country level-the dataset helps generate a baseline of the main varieties of ammunition used in crime, by country and crime category, and over time. Most of the ammunition (61 per cent) was recovered in the context of violent types of crime-homicides and assaults-for which pistol ammunition calibers were the most prominent. 610 unique headstamps were recorded, but only a small proportion of these varieties of ammunition accounted for most of the cases. All four country datasets included both foreign-made ammunition as well as cartridges produced domestically. The year of manufacture could be identified for 28 per cent of the cartridges, and at least 27 pieces of ammunition were produced in the same year that the criminal incident took place, which suggests recent diversion from licit holdings. The dataset revealed additional trends such as the criminal use of blank ammunition in all four case studies, as well as the relatively new prevalence of the 7,62 × 39 caliber-which is typically used with AK-pattern rifles-in one country. In addition to shedding new light on the types of ammunition used in crime in the European context, monitoring illicit ammunition across space and over time has the potential to support police investigations with intelligence on criminals' sources of supply.

Today, there is a real political urge to see the sharing of ballistic data intensify across Europe mostly due to recent events such as terrorist attacks. However, technical constraints remain and two main options are being discussed. The first one relies on a centralized common database, implying a vendor monopoly for all Europe and a unified protocol among member states. The second one advocates for a distributed framework relying on existing national infrastructures and leaving each country responsible for its own protocols. This article describes a prototype network linking Switzerland and France using the Evofinder® system by ScannBI. We will first focus on how this network was set up, and then report some results from tests conducted to assess the viability of the concept. These results demonstrate that the second option cannot be discarded and pave the way for a distributed network. This solution appears to be cheaper, more adaptable and answers the practical needs of member states.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Functional gastrointestinal disorders are highly prevalent, cause significant suffering, and are costly to society. Pain is a central feature of 2 of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders: irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia. Although these disorders have been well studied in adults, their etiology is poorly understood. We sought to identify early life factors associated with the development of abdominal pain in children (age, 2-12 y). METHODS: We collected data from the All Babies in Southeast Sweden study of 1781 children, born from October 1, 1997, through October 31, 1999, whose families answered questions about abdominal pain and risk factors at birth, 1 year, 2.5 years, 5 years, 8 years, and 10 to 12 years. We used latent growth curve models to evaluate risk factors for development of abdominal pain. The primary outcomes were prevalence of abdominal pain and associated factors. RESULTS: The prevalence of abdominal pain increased linearly with age in the study cohort, increasing by approximately 6% per year. Psychosocial variables associated with slope of the growth curve included lower emotional control at age 2 years (P = .005), parental concern for the child at age 2 years (P = .02), and measures of parental stress (P = .004). Nonvaginal birth was associated with a reduced slope of the growth curve (P = .03). CONCLUSIONS: In a study of children in Sweden, we found early psychosocial environment and mode of delivery at birth was associated with development of childhood abdominal pain. Factors associated with development of the early immune system, identified in previous recall-based research, were not supported by data from this study. These findings have important implications for the prevention of abdominal pain in children and later in life.

The incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1D) has increased explained by changes in environment or lifestyle. In modern society dissemination of heavy metals has increased. As the autoimmune process usually starts already, we hypothesized that exposure to toxic metals during fetal life might contribute to development of T1D in children. We analysed arsenic (AS), aluminium (Al), cadmium (Cd), lithium (Li), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), in cord blood of 20 children who later developed T1D (probands), and in 40 age-and sex-matched controls. Analysis of heavy metals in cord blood was performed by ALS Scandinavia AB (Luleå, Sweden) using the 'ultrasensitive inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometry method' (ICP-SFMS) after acid digestion with HNO3. Most children had no increased concentrations of the metals in cord blood. However, children who later developed T1D had more often increased concentrations (above limit of detection; LOD) of aluminium (p = 0.006) in cord blood than the non-diabetic controls, and also more often mercury and arsenic (n.s). Our conclusion is that exposure to toxic metals during pregnancy might be one among several contributing environmental factors to the disease process if confirmed in other birth cohort trials.

The Glock company's newest generation of pistols (G42/43, Gen5) is equipped with so-called "Glock Marksman Barrels" (GMB). These barrels feature an enhanced polygonal profile with right-hand twist and a small rifled profile on either side of the main polygonal field impression (Hernandez et al., 2016). Up until now, using the usual methods of comparison (automatic ballistic identification systems, ABIS and comparison microscope) it was difficult to assign bullets fired from a polygonal barrel to their origin with a high evidentiary value (Murdock et al., 1990) [5] (Northcutt, 2010). In this study, test shots from 18 Glock Gen5 pistols (9 Glock 17 pistols and 9 Glock 19 pistols) were compared to examine their differentiability. In addition, a Gen5 Glock 17 pistol was used to shoot 500 cartridges to determine to what degree the first projectile could be matched with the 500th (Zhang and Luo, 2018) [10]. This study was able to demonstrate that the new "Glock Marksman Barrel" (GMB) leaves marks of sufficient quality on projectiles to make high evidentiary value assignments of those projectiles to an individual firearm, both by using the comparison microscope as well as with an ABIS (Evofinder®). Further, it was possible to assign the cartridge casings to an individual pristine firearm.
