Objective: Congenital cleft lip and palate is a common birth defect that seriously affects the lives of the afflicted children and their families. Previously, no research has been done to investigate the pathogenic characteristics of cleft lip and palate among ethnic minorities, for example, Tibetans, a minority ethnic group with a large population in China. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the occurrence of cleft lip and palate in Tibetans and Han Chinese in western China and the distribution of ABO blood groups and Rh blood groups to provide a theoretical basis for the precise prevention and treatment of cleft lip and palate. Methods: In this study, statistics on Tibetan patients with cleft lip and palate, some Han patients with cleft lip and palate, and normal controls from western China were retrospectively collected. All participants were patients from West China Stomatology Hospital, Sichuan University. All patients with cleft lip and palate received treatment at the hospital between January 2016 and September 2023. The normal controls were outpatients or inpatients who did not have cleft lip and palate, and who received treatment at the hospital between January 2020 and October 2023. Information on the A, B, O, and AB blood groups and Rh positive and negative blood groups of the patients was collected and compared with that of the normal controls. The incidence of different phenotypes, including cleft lip alone, cleft palate alone, and cleft lip with cleft palate, in patients of blood groups A, B, O and AB were statistically analyzed by Chi-square test. Results: A total of 1227 Tibetan patients with cleft lip and palate, 4064 Han patients with cleft lip and palate, and 5360 normal controls were included in the study. Among all the patients with cleft lip and palate, 1863 had cleft lip alone, 1425 had cleft palate alone, and 2003 had cleft lip with cleft palate. The ABO blood group distribution of Tibetan patients with cleft lip and palate was characterized as O>B>A>AB, with Rh positive blood group accounting for 100%, blood type O accounting for 41.15%, and blood type B accounting for 30.64%. The blood group distribution of the Han patients with cleft lip and palate was characterized as O>A>B>AB, with Rh positive blood group accounting for 99.58%, blood type O accounting for 35.78%, and type A accounting for 30.54%. There was a significant difference in ABO blood groups between Tibetan and Han patients with cleft lip and palate (P<0.005), but no significant difference in Rh blood groups. The ABO blood group distribution of the Tibetan patients with cleft lip and palate showed an obvious difference from that of the control group, while those of the Han patients with cleft lip and cleft palate and the control group did not show obvious differences. In the analysis of the subtypes, it was found that the blood group distribution in the subtypes of cleft lip alone, cleft palate alone, and cleft lip with cleft palate in the Tibetan population was O>B>A>AB, while that in the Han Chinese population was O>A>B>AB. There were differences in blood group distribution between Tibetans and Hans of the subtypes of cleft lip alone and cleft lip with cleft palate (P<0.001), but there was no difference in blood group distribution in the population of cleft palate-only subtype. The proportion of blood type O in Tibetan patients with cleft lip and palate was significantly higher than that in the Han patients with cleft lip and palate. The blood group distribution of Tibetan patients with cleft lip and palate in Sichuan Province, Xizang Autonomous Region, and Qinghai Province was always O>B>A>AB. Tibetan patients from Shiqu County and Baiyu County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and Chaya County, Qamdo City were predominantly of blood type B, and those from other regions were mainly of blood type O. Conclusion: There were significant differences in the phenotype composition and ABO blood group distribution between the Tibetan and Han populations with cleft lip and palate in western China. The distribution of blood group O in the population with cleft lip and palate was higher than that in the normal population, and the same trend was observed for different phenotypes. However, differences between Tibetan and Han populations in ABO blood group distribution were only found in the phenotypes of cleft lip only and cleft lip with palate. Tibetans with blood type O are more prone to cleft lip deformity than Han people, and the effect in the phenotype of cleft lip with palate is less pronounced than that in the phenotype of cleft lip only.

Background: Colorectal signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) is a rare subtype of malignant adenocarcinoma, accounting for approximately 1 % of colorectal cancer (CRC) cases. Its biomarkers and molecular characteristics remain controversial, and there are no specific therapeutic targets or strategies for its clinical treatment. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted between January 2010 and December 2021. 1058 colorectal cancer cases from the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center and 489 cases from the Tumor Genome Atlas Project were included in the analysis, of which 64 were SRCC. Data extraction included patient demographics, blood types and risk factors, including clinical variables and genomics (either a 19-gene panel NGS or 1021-gene panel NGS). Univariate analyses were performed to identify factors significantly associated with overall survival. Results: The blood groups of 27 (42.2 %), 18 (28.1 %), 12 (18.8 %), and seven (10.9 %) patients were classified as O, A, B, and AB, respectively. We found that O was a unique blood group characterized by a low frequency of KRAS mutations, a high frequency of heterozygosity at each HLA class I locus, and a high tumor mutational burden (TMB). Patients in blood group A with high-frequency KRAS mutations and those in blood group B with anemia and metabolic abnormalities required targeted treatment. Furthermore, genetic alterations in SRCC differed from those in adenocarcinoma and mucinous adenocarcinoma. Conclusions: Our study revealed genomic changes in SRCC patients across different blood groups, which could advance the understanding and precise treatment of colorectal SRCC.

BACKGROUND: Elevated serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels are a risk factor for all-cause mortality in hemodialysis patients. Traditionally in Japan, ALP measurements were conducted using the JSCC method, which yields higher ALP measurement values than the IFCC method, mainly due to its increased sensitivity to intestinal ALP. METHODS: Serum total ALP levels before and after switching the assay method from JSCC to IFCC were compared among different blood types in 521 hemodialysis patients (Study 1). The association between ALP levels measured by the JSCC method and 7-year mortality was analyzed, including blood types and liver function parameters as covariates, in 510 hemodialysis patients (Study 2). RESULTS: ALP levels measured by the JSCC method were approximately three times higher than those measured by the IFCC method, with significant elevation in patients with blood types B and O compared to those with blood types A and AB. Similarly, ALP levels measured by the IFCC method were significantly higher in patients with blood types B and O compared to those with blood types A and AB (Study 1). The highest tertile of ALP levels showed a significantly increased risk of all-cause mortality, even after adjusting for patient background. However, this significance disappeared when serum liver function-related or inflammatory markers were included as covariates (Study 2). CONCLUSION: ALP levels measured by the JSCC method are associated with life prognosis, but caution should be exercised due to their elevation in patients with blood types B and O and in those with hepatic dysfunction or inflammation.

Background: Patients with sensitization and blood type O experience increased waiting times for deceased-donor kidney transplantation (DDKT). While allocation benefits are needed to resolve inequity in DDKT opportunity, whether DDKT has comparable outcomes in this disadvantaged population requires further study. This study assessed these outcomes and developed a new allocation system that balances equity and utility. Methods: Patients from national and hospital cohorts from two centers in Korea were categorized as B1 to B4 (according to panel reactive antibody [PRA] positivity and ABO blood type) and A1 to A4 (based on the maximal PRA% and blood type), respectively. Competing risk and Cox regression analyses were performed to assess the effects of PRA and blood type on graft failure and mortality, respectively. Based on DDKT opportunities and posttransplant outcomes, a new scoring system for kidney allocation was developed. Results: The national and hospital cohorts included 3,311 and 819 patients, respectively, who underwent DDKT. Despite the disparities in DDKT opportunities, the graft failure rates and mortality did not differ among the different PRA and blood type groups. Furthermore, posttransplantation outcomes did not differ according to the categories with different DDKT opportunities. A new scoring system to provide additional points to disadvantaged populations was developed based on the hazard ratios for DDKT. Conclusion: A new allocation approach based on PRA and ABO blood types offers benefits to disadvantaged patients with fewer DDKT opportunities and could enhance equity without sacrificing utility in Korea, which has a long waiting time for DDKT.

BACKGROUND: ABO blood group system has been clinically related to an increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Preliminary data relating Rhesus (Rh) factor and these outcomes also have been published. Our aim was to analyse the impact of blood group on the short and long-term outcomes after carotid endarterectomy (CEA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2012 to 2019, patients from a referral centre who underwent CEA for atherosclerotic carotid stenosis were prospectively followed. Our primary outcomes were long-term major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) and all-cause mortality. Secondary outcomes were perioperative complications and myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery (MINS). Median follow-up was 50 months (interquartile range 21-69). Time-to-event analysis was used to determine the effect of ABO and Rh groups in long-term outcomes. RESULTS: One hundred and eighty-four patients were included, with a mean age of 70.1 ± 9.1 years. Eighteen (25.7%) patients with O type and 48 (42.1%) patients with non-O type presented coronary artery disease (odds ratio [OR]: 2.313, 5-95% confidence interval (CI) 1.245-4.297, p = .008). Patients Rh+ presented significantly more congestive heart failure, 23 (14.7%), p = .03. The incidence of MACE in the long-term was higher in non-O patients (adjusted hazard ratio: 2.034; CI: 1.032-4.010, p = .040). Rh- patients, presented a higher incidence of perioperative MINS. However, there was no statistically significant association with long-term risk of MACE. CONCLUSION: The incidence of MACE in long-term analysis was higher in non-O blood type and 30-day MINS was significantly more common amongst Rh- patients. The benefit from a more complete preoperative cardiac study in these patients should be performed.

INTRODUCTION: Limited evidence exists on the distribution of ABO RhD blood groups and prevalence and specificity of red blood cell (RBC) alloantibodies in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia. We investigated RBC alloantibody prevalence and ABO RhD groups in Aboriginal patients undergoing cardiac surgery at a South Australian (SA) tertiary hospital, a major cardiac surgical referral centre for Northern Territory (NT) patients METHODS: Retrospective analysis of all consecutive patients undergoing cardiac surgery at Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) between January 2014 and June 2019. ABO and RhD blood groups, and RBC alloantibody prevalence, specificity, and clinical significance in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal cardiac patients were determined at time of surgery and on follow up to 2021. RESULTS: 2327 patients were included, 588 (25.3 %) were from NT, and 420 (18.0 %) were Aboriginal. Aboriginal patients had a higher prevalence of ABO group O (59.8 % vs 43.9 %) and RhD positive (99.0 % vs 83.8 %). One-hundred-and-eleven patients had 154 RBC alloantibodies, 57/420 (13.6 %) Aboriginal versus 54/1907 (2.8 %) non-Aboriginal (p < 0.0001). There were higher numbers of IgM alloantibodies in Aboriginal patients (59/77, 76.6 %), with Lewis, P1 and M more common. Sixty patients had antibodies detected at time of surgery, 14 NT patients with previously detected alloantibodies, prior to surgery, presented with a negative antibody screen and 37 had new antibodies detected after cardiac surgery. CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of IgM alloantibodies was found in Aboriginal compared to non-Aboriginal cardiac surgery patients. The clinical significance of these IgM alloantibodies in Aboriginal peoples requires further investigation.

Background: Whether the relationships between ABO blood genotypes (AA, AO, BB, BO, AB, and OO) and dementia are modified by gender and APOE status has been unclear. Methods: We used data from the UK Biobank, a population-based cohort study of 487,425 individuals. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) between ABO genotypes and risk of dementia. Multivariable linear regression models were used to estimate the relationship between ABO genotypes and MRI-based brain indices. Results: Overall, 487,425 participants were included at baseline. After 34 million person-years follow up, 7,548 patients developed all-cause dementia. Before stratifying by sex and APOE status, compared to OO genotype, BB genotype was associated with increased risk of all-cause dementia (1.36, 1.03-1.80) and other types dementia (1.65, 1.20-2.28). After stratifying by sex, only in males, BB genotype was associated with higher risk of all-cause dementia (1.44, 1.02-2.09) and other types of dementia (1.95, 1.30-2.93). AB genotype in males was also associated with increased AD (1.34, 1.04-1.72). After further stratifying by APOE e4 status, BB genotype with two APOE e4 alleles showed even stronger association with all-cause dementia 4.29 (1.57, 11.72) and other types dementia (5.49, 1.70-17.69) in males. Also in males, AA genotype with one APOE e4 was associated with increased risks of all-cause dementia (1.27, 1.04-1.55), AD (1.45, 1.09-1.94) and other types dementia (1.40, 1.08-1.81). Linear regression models showed that in both sexes with APOE e4, AA genotype was associated with reduced total grey matter volume. Conclusion: Sex and APOE e4 carrier status modified the association between ABO genotypes and risk of dementia. In males, BB genotype was consistently associated with increased risk of dementia, especially in those with two APOE e4 alleles. Also, in males with one APOE e4, AA genotype might be linked to higher risk of dementia.

PURPOSE: This study assessed whether or not the ABO blood type affects the incidence of HCC recurrence after living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 856 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who underwent LDLT between January 2006 and December 2016 at the Asan Medical Center. RESULTS: This study included 324 patients (37.9%) with blood type A, 215 (25.1%) with blood type B, 210 (24.5%) with blood type O, and 107 (12.5%) with blood type AB. ABO-incompatible LT was performed in 136 (15.9%) patients. The independent risk factors for the disease-free survival (DFS) were maximal tumor diameter, microvascular invasion, and Milan criteria. The only independent risk factor for the overall survival (OS) was microvascular invasion. The ABO blood group did not affect the DFS (P = 0.978) or OS (P = 0.261). The DFS according to the ABO blood group did not differ significantly between the ABO-compatible (p = 0.701) and ABO-incompatible LDLT recipients (p = 0.147). The DFS according to the ABO blood group did not differ significantly between patients within the Milan criteria (p = 0.934) and beyond the Milan criteria (p = 0.525). The DFS did not differ significantly between recipients with and without type A blood (p = 0.941). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that the ABO blood group system had no prognostic impact on the oncological outcomes of patients undergoing LT for HCC.

BACKGROUND: The ABO blood group has long been recognized as a significant factor influencing susceptibility to infectious diseases. Numerous studies have explored the links between ABO blood types and both the likelihood of contracting COVID-19 and the severity of the infection, yielding conflicting results. AIM: This study intends to determine the influence of age, gender, the ABO blood group, and Rh factor on the potential development of COVID-19 infection. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional, observational study collected data including age, gender, the ABO blood group, and Rh factor from 80 healthcare professionals at R. R. Dental College and Hospital in Udaipur with a positive history of COVID-19 infection via Google Forms (Google LLC, Mountain View, California, United States). Chi-square statistics assessed the distribution of blood types and antibodies within the samples. Odds ratio (OR) assays were used to assess the probability of a certain blood type or Rh factor with version 21.0 of the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY). RESULTS: In this study, the blood group type O was 45.2% (n = 33), type A was 21.9% (n = 16), type B was 24.7% (n = 18), and type AB was 8.2% (n = 6). Rh-positive samples were 87.7% (n = 64) and Rh-negative samples were 12.3% (n = 9). There was a statistically significant correlation between Type A (p = 0.001) and Type O (p = 0.049). Thirty-one participants (42.5%) were aged 20-30 years, 26 (35.6%) were aged 31-40 years, and 16 (21.9%) were aged 41-50 years. The statistical analysis revealed no statistically significant distinction among the age groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The patients' gender, age, and concurrent disorders are crucial risk variables that determine the severity of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. There is growing data indicating that the ABO blood group has a significant role in disease biology at physiological and biochemical levels. Hence, this study adds valuable information to strengthen and establish the potential role of factors, such as age and gender, in the possible pathogenicity of COVID-19 infection.

Evaluating the association of ABO blood group with different delayed hypersensitivity reactions, such as oral lichenoid reaction (OLR), can provide a new perspective for clinical practice. Therefore, this study designed to investigate ABO blood group antigens in OLR patients. In this case-control study, the ABO blood group of 112 OLR patients and 117 individuals without oral lesions were included. Gender, age, characteristics of the lesions, medications and restorative materials recorded. Chi-square test used to compare the frequency of ABO blood groups in OLR patients with controls. The O blood group was significantly higher in OLR patients and all its subtypes. Also, there were significant relation between O blood group, and severity of lesions. The frequency of dysplasia was non-statistically significant higher in OLR patients with O blood group than other blood group. Based on the results of the present study, O blood group was significantly more in patients with lichenoid reaction than control group, and AB blood group was the lowest. Also, O blood group showed a positive association with the more severe form of OLR lesions and frequency of dysplasia.

Background: The ABO blood group system has previously been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), where non-O blood group individuals have shown an increased risk. Studies assessing early atherosclerotic disease while also including RhD are few. We aimed to determine whether the ABO and RhD blood groups are associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in a healthy population. Methods: We included 3532 participants from the VIPVIZA trial with available carotid ultrasonography results to assess subclinical disease. Information about blood groups was obtained from the SCANDAT-3 database, where 85% of VIPVIZA participants were registered. Results: RhD- individuals aged 40 years showed increased carotid intima-media thickness (B 1.09 CI 95% 1.03; 1.14) compared to RhD+ individuals. For ABO, there were no differences in ultrasonography results when assessing the whole study population. However, 60-year-old individuals with heredity for CVD and a non-O blood group had decreased odds for carotid plaques (OR 0.54 CI 95% 0.33; 0.88). Conclusions: RhD blood group is associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in younger individuals, indicating a role as a mediator in the atherosclerotic process. In addition, a non-O blood group was associated with decreased subclinical atherosclerosis in individuals aged 60 and with heredity (corresponding to the group with the highest atherosclerotic burden).

BACKGROUND: Despite improving understanding of trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC), mortality and morbidity due to exsanguinating trauma remain high. Increased complications due to hemorrhage have been reported in blood group O, possibly due to reduced levels of von Willebrand factor (vWF). METHODS: An urban level 1 adult trauma center registry was retrospectively queried. Patients receiving ≥6 units of pRBC within 4 â€‹h of presentation were included. Patient demographics, admission labs and outcomes were obtained. Univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: 562 patients were identified. There were no significant differences in demographics, admission labs, or outcome between different ABO groups. After adjustment, Type A patients were more likely to be hypocoagulable compared to Type O patients (p â€‹= â€‹0.014). No mortality differences were seen between ABO types in multiple regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS: No outcome or mortality differences were seen between ABO types, therefore factors other than vWF expression should be considered to explain coagulopathy in trauma patients.

Patient blood group (BG) is predictive for von-Willebrand-factor (VWF) and Factor VIII variation. The clinical impact of this ABO-effect on blood loss, cardiovascular complications and outcome has been described for several patient cohorts. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of patient BG on blood loss and outcome after coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG). Patient records, intraoperative data and perioperative transfusion records of 5713 patients receiving an on-pump CABG procedure between 05/2004 and 12/2018 were analyzed. A logistic regression model for death due to perioperative myocardial ischaemia (PMI) was developed from initially 24 variables by using an univariate and multivariate selection process. BG AB patients required less blood transfusions as compared to the other blood groups, especially in case of emergency operations. However, BG AB patients also had a higher mortality which was due to secondary cardiovascular complications. The impact of blood type on the rate of cardiovascular mortality was confirmed in the logistic regression model. BG AB patients have a worse outcome after CABG surgery due to an increased incidence of fatal cardiovascular complications. As perioperative myocardial ischemia due to graft occlusion appears to be the most likely explanation, stricter anticoagulation for BG AB patients should be discussed.

Objective: The aim of this study is to explore the value of combined detection of ABO blood group and tumor markers in the diagnosis of gastric cancer. Methods: A total of 3650 gastric cancer patients treated in our center from January 2015 to December 2019, and 5822 controls were recruited, and divided into training set and validation set according to 7:3. The diagnostic and predictive model of gastric cancer was constructed by binary logistic regression method in the training set. The diagnostic value of the prediction model for gastric cancer was evaluated by calculating the prediction probability P value and drawing the Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and was verified in the validation set. Results: The Area under the curve (AUC) of the diagnosis and prediction model in the training set was 0.936 (95%CI: 0.926-0.941), the sensitivity was 81.66%, and the specificity was 98.61%. In the validation set, the AUC was 0.941 (95%CI: 0.932-0.950), the sensitivity was 82.33%, and the specificity was 99.02%. Furthermore, the diagnostic model obtained in this study had a high diagnostic value for early gastric cancer patients in the healthy population (AUC of training set, validation set and total population were 0.906, 0.920 and 0.908, respectively). Conclusions: We constructed a diagnostic model for gastric cancer including blood group and tumor markers, which has high reference value for the diagnosis of gastric cancer patients, and the model can better distinguish early gastric cancer from healthy people.

BACKGROUND: C-reactive protein (CRP)- and leukocyte levels are common parameters to evaluate the inflammatory response after orthopaedic surgery and rule out infectious complications. Nevertheless, both parameters are vulnerable to disturbing biases and therefore leave room for interpretation. OBJECTIVE: Since blood groups are repeatedly discussed to influence inflammatory response, our aim was to observe their impact on CRP and leukocyte levels after total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA). METHODS: Short term postoperative CRP and leukocyte levels of 987 patients, who received either primary TKH (n= 479) or THA (n= 508), were retrospectively correlated with their blood group. ABO, Rhesus and a combination of both blood groups were differentiated. RESULTS: CRP levels after TKA were significantly higher in blood type AB than in type A and O on day 2-4 and also than in type A on day 6-8. Leukocyte levels after THA were significantly higher in blood group type O than in type A on day 6-8 while still remaining in an apathological range. We observed no significant differences between Rhesus types and Rhesus types and CRP or leukocyte levels. CONCLUSION: We observed significantly increased CRP levels after TKA in patients with blood group AB. Since the elevated CRP levels do not account for early periprosthetic infection, surgeons should include this variation in their postoperative evaluation.

Objective:To investigate the molecular biological mechanism of Bw07 allele and its transferase alteration carried by a proband of ABw07 subtype.Methods:A 2-year-old male child was selected as the research object. The peripheral blood of the proband and his parents was identified for ABO blood type by the test tube method, and the ABO subgroup PCR-SSP detection and ABO gene sequencing were performed on the three individuals to determine their blood type genotypes. Finally, the effect of the p.Arg352Gln mutation on Bw07 transferase was verified by virtual mutation, DUET structure prediction, molecular dynamics analysis, and in vitro cellular experiments.Results:The serological phenotypes of the proband and his mother were ABw and Bw, respectively, while his father was normal A. The ABO subgroup PCR-SSP assay identified the three genotypes as Bw07/A, Bw07/O, and A/A, respectively.Sanger sequencing further verified that the proband and his mother carried the Bw07 gene, and virtual mutation showed that the intermolecular forces were weakened by the R352Q mutation. DUET predicted that this p.Arg352Gln mutation could affect the thermodynamic stability of Bw07 transferase. Molecular dynamics analysis confirmed that the alteration of thermodynamic stability was mainly related to the appearance of large fluctuations in the amino acid backbone atoms in the 125-133, 193-198 and 336-354 regions, and in vitro cellular experiments further verified the weakened antigen synthesis of Bw07 transferase.Conclusion:The formation of the ABw07 phenotype is associated with the mutation of the highly conserved Arg352 to Gln in Bw07 transferase.

Background : Colorectal cancer, a solid tumor with a high prevalence, contributes significantly to annual mortality rates. Various factors, including blood groups, may influence cancer risk. Multiple studies have suggested a potential connection between ABO and Rh blood groups and colorectal cancer risk. This study aims to investigate the role of ABO and Rh blood groups as risk factors in colorectal cancer patients. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study involving 71 colorectal cancer patients diagnosed between 2018 and 2020 in Khuzestan province, Iran, with known ABO blood types. Large-scale data from 29,922 blood donors in Khuzestan served as the healthy population control. The study analyzed the distribution of ABO blood groups among the blood donors. Results : Our findings revealed that the distribution of blood groups among colorectal cancer patients was as follows: O (31.0%), A (29.6%), B (29.6%), and AB (9.8%). However, our analysis did not establish a significant association between colorectal cancer risk and ABO antigens (P-value = 0.636) or Rh blood group (P = 0.198). Additionally, no significant differences in ABO blood types were observed concerning gender (P = 0.802), cancer type (P = 0.338), or tumor type (P = 0.207) among colorectal cancer patients. Conclusion : This study does not support a significant correlation between ABO and Rh blood groups and the risk of colorectal cancer, nor does it find associations with cancer type or tumor type.

Liver transplantation is a critical procedure for patients with end-stage liver disease, but it is often hindered by ABO-incompatibility between the donor and recipient, which can lead to immediate humoral rejection. We present a unique case involving a 10-month-old patient who, by accident, received an ABO-incompatible partial liver transplant from a type A mother without undergoing desensitization. Remarkably, during a 21-year follow-up period, the patient exhibited no signs of humoral or graft rejection, despite nonadherence to medication. This case highlights the possibility of dual tolerance in pediatric ABO-incompatible liver transplantation and provides insights into immune tolerance mechanisms, with implications for enhancing patient care and reducing healthcare costs. Further research is necessary to clarify these mechanisms and to evaluate the long-term durability of tolerance in pediatric transplant recipients.

ABSTRACT Objectives: To verify the association between the ABO blood type and the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 disease severity. Methods: This review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), using the 2020 PRISMA Checklist and flow diagram, and articles selected for review were analyzed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Rating Scale. The research question was: "Would the ABO blood group influence the risk of infection and clinical course of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2?", The following databases were used: Embase, PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL), Web of Science, Science-Direct and Scopus. The protocol for this review was registered in the Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO), number CRD42021245945. Results: We found 798 articles across PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct and Virtual Health Library and 54 articles were included in the final analysis. Among 30 studies evaluating the risk of COVID-19 infection, 21 found significant correlations with ABO blood groups, 14 of them revealing an increased risk in blood group A and 15 studies showing a decreased risk in blood group O. Most studies found no significant correlation with disease severity or mortality. Conclusion: The qualitative assessment of available information suggests that blood group A may be a risk factor for COVID-19 infection and that blood group O may have a protective effect. We were unable to determine a clear association between the ABO blood group and mortality. These conclusions are based on highly heterogenous evidence.

Background The prevalence of impacted third molars is high in the global general population. The etiology of impacted third molars is not fully understood, but it is thought to result from combined genetic and environmental factors. Some studies have suggested a link between the blood group and the risk of impacted third molars. This study aimed to investigate the association between the blood group and the presence of impacted third molars and its pattern. Method A total of 856 panoramic radiographs were included in the study. The third molars were evaluated for the pattern of third-molar impaction and blood characteristics recorded as ABO group and presence or absence of Rhesus antigen. Results The results showed no significant association between the blood group and the presence of impacted third molars. The prevalence of at least one impacted the third molar was 34.6%. The most common angulation of impacted third molars was vertical (V) (45.1%), followed by mesioangular (MA) (33.7%), distoangular (DA) (13.8%), and horizontal (H) (7.4%). There was no significant association between the blood group and the number of impacted third molars nor between the blood group and the angulation of the impacted third molars. Conclusion This study suggests that the blood group is not a major factor in the development of impacted third molars. However, further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm these findings.
