RESUMEN

Despite advancements in cancer research, epithelial ovarian cancer remains a leading threat to women's health with a low five-year survival rate of 48%. Prognosis for advanced cases, especially International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) III-IV, is poor. Standard care includes surgical resection and platinum-based chemo, but 70-80% face recurrence and chemoresistance. In recent years, three- dimensional (3D) cancer models, especially patients-derived organoids (PDOs), have revolutionized cancer research for personalized treatment. By transcending the constraints of conventional models, organoids accurately recapitulate crucial morphological, histological, and genetic characteristics of diseases, particularly in the context of ovarian cancer. The extensive potential of ovarian cancer organoids is explored, spanning from foundational theories to cutting-edge applications. As potent preclinical models, organoids offer invaluable tools for predicting patient treatment responses and guiding the development of personalized therapeutic strategies. Furthermore, in the arena of drug evaluation, organoids demonstrate their unique versatility as platforms, enabling comprehensive testing of innovative drug combinations and novel candidates, thereby pioneering new avenues in pharmaceutical research. Notably, organoids mimic the dynamic progression of ovarian cancer, from inception to systemic dissemination, shedding light on intricate and subtle disease mechanisms, and providing crucial insights. Operating at an individualized level, organoids also unravel the complex mechanisms underlying drug resistance, presenting strategic opportunities for the development of effective treatment strategies. This review summarizes the emerging role of ovarian cancer organoids, meticulously cultivated cellular clusters within three-dimensional models, as a groundbreaking paradigm in research.

Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is the second most common type of thyroid cancer, presenting unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the recent advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of FTC, emphasizing the significance of these developments in improving patient outcomes. We discuss the evolution of diagnostic techniques, including advancements in imaging modalities, fine needle aspiration biopsy, and molecular diagnostics, which have enhanced the accuracy of FTC detection and differentiation from benign conditions. The review also evaluates current treatment strategies, including surgical interventions, radioactive iodine therapy, and targeted therapies, examining their effectiveness and impact on patient prognosis. Additionally, we address ongoing challenges in FTC management, such as variability in treatment guidelines and disparities in care. Finally, the review explores emerging therapies and future research directions, highlighting innovations that may further optimize FTC management. By synthesizing current knowledge and identifying future research opportunities, this review aims to contribute to refining diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for FTC.

Plastic pollution and its potential risks have been raising public concerns as a global environmental issue. Global plastic waste may double by 2030, posing a significant challenge to the remediation of environmental plastics. In addition to finding alternative products and managing plastic emission sources, effective removal technologies are crucial to mitigate the negative impact of plastic pollution. However, current remediation strategies, including physical, chemical, and biological measures, are unable to compete with the surging amounts of plastics entering the environment. This perspective lays out recent advances to propel both research and action. In this process, phytoaccumulation, phytostabilization, and phytofiltration can be applied to reduce the concentration of nanoplastics and submicron plastics in terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric environments, as well as to prevent the transport of microplastics from sources to sinks. Meanwhile, advocating for a more promising future still requires significant efforts in screening hyperaccumulators, coupling multiple measures, and recycling stabilized plastics from plants. Phytoremediation can be an excellent strategy to alleviate global micro/nanoplastic pollution because of the cost-effectiveness and environmental sustainability of green technologies.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) presents a critical challenge in orthopedic care, contributing to significant patient morbidity and healthcare costs. This burden is expected to increase secondary to growing demand for total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Despite the profound significance of PJI, there is currently no universally accepted "gold standard" diagnostic criteria using serum biomarker thresholds; latest criteria fail to differentiate acute infections from chronic or consider time since initial surgery. Furthermore, contemporary PJI treatment, which conventionally requires 2-stage revision surgery in conjunction with rigorous antibiotic treatment, can be particularly taxing on patients. Fortunately, recent years have seen marked evolution in both PJI diagnosis and treatment methods. Contemporary research supports time-dependent serum biomarker thresholds with greater sensitivity and specificity than previously reported, as well as alternative surgical options which may be more suitable for certain patients. The following narrative review aims to describe the significance and pathogenesis of PJI before characterizing current challenges, novel innovations, and the future landscape of PJI diagnosis and management. Here, we spotlight the emerging utility of novel biomarkers and metagenomic next-generation sequencing for diagnosis, advancements in patient-centered surgical outcome prediction tools for PJI risk assessment and prevention, and evolving surgical techniques including 1-stage and a "hybrid" 1.5-stage revision surgeries. Additionally, we explore cutting-edge therapeutic modalities including peptide and bacteriophage-based treatments, intraoperative anti-biofilm gel, the VT-X7 antibiotic pump, and promising immune-based interventions. Ultimately, these advancements hold the potential to revolutionize PJI management, offering hope for improved outcomes and reduced burdens on healthcare systems.

Background: This study aims to verify the accuracy of item 10 on the energy level of the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12) in an item screening according to Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ) results, providing a measure of hyper-energy. Methods: Regression techniques were employed in a dataset comprising 4093 records of respondents to test both linear and nonlinear relationships between predictor and outcome variables (energy level and symptoms considered in the MDQ). We examined the relationship of energy level with cases identified using MDQ with a cut-off of 7. Results: Levels of energy, as rated on item 10 of the SF-12, were related to the MDQ score with sensitivity = 0.72 and specificity = 0.70. In linear regression, the associations were stronger with MDQ items on excessive energy or activity, showing a medium effect size and an explained variance of 10% or higher. A greater association was observed for items on excessive energy and activity, as expected, as well as for items concerning self-confidence, sociability, and talkativeness. Conclusions: This result may have implications for the research on risk factors and the pathogenesis of the dysregulation of mood, energy, and social rhythms syndrome (DYMERS), a syndrome that is hypothesized to occur in stressful conditions like those shown under the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Few large-scale studies have evaluated the effectiveness of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) technological advances in the treatment of patients with unprotected left main coronary artery disease (LM-CAD). We aim to identify independent factors that affect the prognosis of PCI in patients with unprotected LM-CAD and to assess the impact of PCI technological advances on long-term clinical outcomes. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 4512 consecutive patients who underwent unprotected LM-CAD PCI at Fuwai Hospital from 2004 to 2016 were enrolled. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify which techniques can independently affect the incidence of major adverse cardiac events (MACEs; a composite of cardiac death, myocardial infarction, or target vessel revascularization). The incidence of 3-year MACEs was 9.0% (406/4512). Four new PCI techniques were identified as the independent protective factors of MACEs, including second-generation drug-eluting stents (hazard ratio [HR], 0.61 [95% CI, 0.37-0.99]), postdilatation (HR, 0.75 [95% CI, 0.59-0.94]), final kissing balloon inflation (HR, 0.78 [95% CI, 0.62-0.99]), and using intravascular ultrasound (HR, 0.78 [95% CI, 0.63-0.97]). The relative hazard of 3-year MACEs was reduced by ≈50% with use of all 4 techniques compared with no technique use (HR, 0.53 [95% CI, 0.32-0.87]). CONCLUSIONS: PCI technological advances including postdilatation, second-generation drug-eluting stent, final kissing balloon inflation, and intravascular ultrasound guidance were associated with improved clinical outcomes in patients who underwent unprotected LM-CAD PCI.

BACKGROUND: Bromhidrosis, characterized by foul-smelling sweat, is a prevalent condition that significantly affects patients' social and psychological well-being. METHODS: This review presents novel treatment approaches and discusses the pros and cons of various treatment options for axillary bromhidrosis. RESULTS: Extensive research has explored numerous treatment modalities for bromhidrosis. This article systematically reviews both surgical and nonsurgical interventions utilized in clinical practice. CONCLUSION: By synthesizing available evidence, this review aims to offer evidence-based recommendations for effectively managing bromhidrosis, considering factors such as treatment efficacy, safety profiles, patient preferences, and clinical outcomes.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) imposes a significant burden on patients and their families because of its high prevalence rate and disabling nature. Given the lack of definitive conclusions regarding its pathogenesis, physicians heavily rely on patients' subjective symptom descriptions for diagnosis because reliable diagnostic biomarkers are currently unavailable. The role of the inflammatory response in the pathogenesis of SCZ has been supported by some studies. The findings of these studies showed abnormal changes in the levels of inflammatory factors, such as cytokines (CKs), in both peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) among individuals affected by SCZ. The findings imply that inflammatory factors could potentially function as risk indicators for the onset of SCZ. Consequently, researchers have directed their attention towards investigating the potential utility of CKs as viable biomarkers for diagnosing SCZ. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) containing disease-specific components exhibit remarkable stability and abundance, making them promising candidates for biomarker discovery across various diseases. CKs encapsulated within EVs secreted by immune cells offer valuable insights into disease progression. This review presents a comprehensive analysis summarizing the relationship between CKs and SCZ and emphasizes the vital role of CKs encapsulated within EVs in the pathogenesis and development of SCZ.

For healthcare datasets, it is often impossible to combine data samples from multiple sites due to ethical, privacy, or logistical concerns. Federated learning allows for the utilization of powerful machine learning algorithms without requiring the pooling of data. Healthcare data have many simultaneous challenges, such as highly siloed data, class imbalance, missing data, distribution shifts, and non-standardized variables, that require new methodologies to address. Federated learning adds significant methodological complexity to conventional centralized machine learning, requiring distributed optimization, communication between nodes, aggregation of models, and redistribution of models. In this systematic review, we consider all papers on Scopus published between January 2015 and February 2023 that describe new federated learning methodologies for addressing challenges with healthcare data. We reviewed 89 papers meeting these criteria. Significant systemic issues were identified throughout the literature, compromising many methodologies reviewed. We give detailed recommendations to help improve methodology development for federated learning in healthcare.

Lithium carbon dioxide (Li-CO2) batteries, noted for their high discharge voltage of approximately 2.8 V and substantial theoretical specific energy of 1876 Wh kg-1, represent a promising avenue for new energy sources and CO2 emission reduction. However, the practical application of these batteries faces significant hurdles, particularly at high current densities and over extended cycle lives, due to their complex reaction mechanisms and slow kinetics. This paper delves into the recent advancements in cathode catalysts for Li-CO2 batteries, with a specific focus on the designing philosophy from composition, geometry, and homogeneity of the catalysts to the proper test conditions and real-world application. It surveys the possible catalytic mechanisms, giving readers a brief introduction of how the energy is stored and released as well as the critical exploration of the relationship between material properties and performances. Specifically, optimization and standardization of test conditions for Li-CO2 battery research is highlighted to enhance data comparability, which is also critical to facilitate the practical application of Li-CO2 batteries. This review aims to bring up inspiration from previous work to advance the design of more effective and sustainable cathode catalysts, tailored to meet the practical demands of Li-CO2 batteries.

Ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) emerges as a minimally invasive strategy for papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC), offering advantages over traditional surgical approaches. RFA employs high-frequency electric currents under precise ultrasound guidance to ablate cancerous tissue. Clinical trials consistently demonstrate RFA's efficacy in tumor control and patient-reported outcomes. However, long-term studies are essential to validate its durability and monitor for potential complications. Collaborative efforts among various medical disciplines ensure procedural accuracy and comprehensive postoperative care. Technological innovations, such as enhanced ultrasound imaging and temperature control, promise to refine RFA's precision and effectiveness. Nevertheless, challenges persist, including the need for standardized protocols and comparative studies with traditional treatments. Future research should focus on long-term outcomes, patient selection criteria, and optimization of procedural techniques to solidify RFA's role in PTMC management. RFA presents a promising avenue for PTMC treatment, warranting further investigation and refinement in clinical practice.

RESUMEN

Over the past decade, MRI has significantly advanced the diagnosis of rheumatic disease in both adults and juveniles. In this article, the authors present an update on MRI applications in rheumatology, based on a review of the most recent publications. New developments in adults related to, among others, axial spondyloarthritis, peripheral arthritis, and the whole body-MRI (WB-MRI) are presented. In juveniles, this update addresses the latest advancements in diagnostic MRI of peripheral joints, followed by MRI of the axial skeleton and implementation of the WB-MRI for the screening of inflammation. The authors also discuss topics of interest concerning contrast-enhanced MRI examinations in children.

CONTEXT: Orthognathic surgery brings about a harmonious relationship between jaws, resulting in improved facial aesthetics. It is key to analyze if satisfactory results can be attained by using virtual surgical planning for orthognathic procedures so as to recommend it for routine clinical practice. AIMS: The aims of this study were to evaluate the various soft tissue changes that take place following orthognathic surgery using three-dimensional (3D) imaging and virtual surgical planning software and quantify the accuracy of virtual surgical planning software on patients undergoing orthognathic surgery. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This is an observational prospective study with a sample size of 12. METHODS AND MATERIALS: In this prospective study, 12 patients undergoing orthognathic surgery were included following the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A usual pre-surgical work-up was done and a 3D replica of the facial skeleton was formulated using the software with the DICOM data acquired from the patient i.e., CT and scans of patient's dentition. Virtual surgical planning was done and splints were manufactured according to the desired newly achieved position. Patients were operated following the virtual surgical plan guided by the computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) splints. Post-operative evaluation was done. As the study is more of a descriptive study to obtain detailed knowledge of a new procedure, only one group is being studied and hence there is no statistical testing included in this study. RESULTS: The mean discrepancy noticed after superimposition of soft tissue points was 0.92 with a standard deviation of 0.3. CONCLUSIONS: 3D CT virtual surgical planning is a reliable tool to achieve predictable and reliable post-operative results in orthognathic surgical cases.

Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative problem with progressive loss of memory and other cognitive function disorders resulting in the imbalance of neurotransmitter activity and signaling progression, which poses the need of the potential therapeutic target to improve the intracellular signaling cascade brought by kinases. Protein kinase plays a significant and multifaceted role in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, by targeting pathological mechanisms like tau hyperphosphorylation, neuroinflammation, amyloid-beta production and synaptic dysfunction. In this review, we thoroughly explore the essential protein kinases involved in Alzheimer's disease, detailing their physiological roles, regulatory impacts, and the newest inhibitors and compounds that are progressing into clinical trials. All the findings of studies exhibited the promising role of kinase inhibitors in the management of Alzheimer's disease. However, it still poses the need of addressing current challenges and opportunities involved with this disorder for the future perspective of kinase inhibitors in the management of Alzheimer's disease. Further study includes the development of biomarkers, combination therapy, and next-generation kinase inhibitors with increased potency and selectivity for its future prospects.

Due to technological advances in mass spectrometry, significant progress has been achieved recently in plant hormone research. Nowadays, plant hormonomics is well established as a fully integrated scientific field focused on the analysis of phytohormones, mainly on their isolation, identification and spatiotemporal quantification in plants. This review represents a comprehensive meta-study of the advances in the phytohormone analysis by mass spectrometry over the past decade. To address current trends and future perspectives, Web of Science data were systematically collected and key features such as mass spectrometry-based analyses were evaluated using multivariate data analysis methods. Our findings showed that plant hormonomics is currently divided into targeted and untargeted approaches. Both aim to miniaturize the sample, allowing high-resolution quantification to be covered in plant organs as well as subcellular compartments. Therefore, we can study plant hormone biosynthesis, metabolism and signalling at a spatio-temporal resolution. Moreover, this trend has recently been accelerated by technological advances such as fluorescence-activated cell sorting or mass spectrometry imaging.

Broccoli, a popular international Brassica oleracea crop, is an important export vegetable in China. Broccoli is not only rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals but also has anticancer and antiviral activities. Recently, an Agrobacterium-mediated transformation system has been established and optimized in broccoli, and transgenic transformation and CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing techniques have been applied to improve broccoli quality, postharvest shelf life, glucoraphanin accumulation, and disease and stress resistance, among other factors. The construction and application of genetic transformation technology systems have led to rapid development in broccoli worldwide, which is also good for functional gene identification of some potential traits in broccoli. This review comprehensively summarizes the progress in transgenic technology and CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing for broccoli over the past four decades. Moreover, it explores the potential for future integration of digital and smart technologies into genetic transformation processes, thus demonstrating the promise of even more sophisticated and targeted crop improvements. As the field continues to evolve, these innovations are expected to play a pivotal role in the sustainable production of broccoli and the enhancement of its nutritional and health benefits.
