RESUMEN

Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is a serious and often fatal condition caused by the accumulation of amyloid fibrils in the heart, leading to progressive heart failure. It involves the misfolding of normally soluble proteins into insoluble amyloid fibrils, with transthyretin and light-chain amyloidosis being the most common forms affecting the heart. Advances in diagnostics, especially cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and non-invasive techniques, have improved early detection and disease management. Artificial intelligence has emerged as a diagnostic tool for cardiac amyloidosis, improving accuracy and enabling earlier intervention through advanced imaging analysis and pattern recognition. Management strategies include volume control, specific pharmacotherapies like tafamidis, and addressing arrhythmias and advanced heart failure. However, further research is needed for novel therapeutic approaches, the long-term effectiveness of emerging treatments, and the optimization of artificial intelligence applications in clinical practice for better patient outcomes. The article aims to provide an overview of CA, outlining its pathophysiology, diagnostic advancements, the role of artificial intelligence, management strategies, and the need for further research.

RESUMEN

The aim of this paper is to comprehensively investigate and analyze the ecological dynamics of the Al-Chibayish Marsh. The study focuses on key environmental factors, aims to gain insight into the diversity and abundance of fish populations within the marsh, identifies dominant fish families, and assesses monthly changes in species composition. Two locations were chosen from among the Al-Chibayish marshes for this study, and three water samples were collected every month at every site, starting from March 2020 to February 2021. The mean water temperature recorded was 23.66 °C, while the salinity content exhibited variation over the study period. In July, the salinity content measured 4.34 g/l. Moreover, the pH ranged from 7.4 to 8.5. Dissolved oxygen levels exhibited seasonal variation, with an average value of 7.65 mg/l. The mean alkalinity value was 155.25 mg/l. Planiliza abu is the predominant species in terms of relative abundance, constituting 25.99 % of the total catch. Its percentages varied from 12.13 % in May to 46.74 % in December, with Alburnus sellal accounting for 19.07 % of the catch, with variations between 5.10 % in May and 30.99 % in June. Oreochromis aureus comprised 15.98 % of the total and fluctuated from 11.17 % in March to 20.27 % in January. Other notable species include Carassius auratus (13.10 %), Coptodon zillii (10.49 %), and Carasobarbus luteus (3.80 %). The H index exhibited variation over time, with values ranging from 1.25 in March to a peak of 2.99 in October. On the other hand, the J index also displayed temporal variability, with values ranging from 0.65 in April to 0.86 in August, while the D index showed changes as well, with values differing from 1.66 in March to 3.79 in January. Finally, based on these data, the ecosystem in the study area can be considered a fragile system.

RESUMEN

Systemic light chain (AL) amyloidosis is a multisystem disorder characterized by extracellular deposition of misfolded insoluble amyloid fibrils resulting in progressive organ dysfunction. AL. amyloidosis most commonly affects the heart, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract and peripheral nerves. Early mortality is chiefly determined by the degree of cardiac involvement. The aim of therapy is to rapidly reduce amyloidogenic light chain production by targeting the underlying clonal plasma or lymphoma cell population. High dose therapy with melphalan followed by autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplant (ASCT) continues to remain a highly effective treatment and is considered a standard of care for transplant eligible patients, which offers long term disease control in patients with AL amyloidosis. In recent years, several new therapeutic options have emerged (including anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies) which are very effective alone or in combination in eradicating clonal plasma cells. In this review, we discuss the role of ASCT in the current setting of a rapidly evolving treatment landscape for patients with AL amyloidosis and provide our practice recommendations.

RESUMEN

Alfalfa is one of the most important and the most cultivated crop due to its high nutritive quality and yield, but adaptation of alfalfa genotypes differ in terms of mobile aluminium stress in the soil. The aim of this study was to evaluate the tolerance to mobile Al concentrations in the laboratory and in the naturally acidic soil and select the promising genotypes based on agro-biological traits. In 2019, a laboratory experiment was conducted at the Institute of Agriculture of LAMMC. The experiment in the acidic soil with different mobile Al concentrations was conducted at the Vezaiciai Branch of LAMMC. In 2020, the crops of alfalfa genotypes (11 cultivars and 3 populations) were established on Balthygleyic Dystric Retisol. The agro-biological traits were assessed during the 2021-2022 season. The tolerance index of hypocotyls and roots was evaluated using the filter-based screening method at different AlCl3 (0.0-64 mM) concentrations. The study results of the filter-based screening method showed that the genotype Zydrune, Malvina, Jõgeva 118, Skriveru, and 3130 were the most tolerant ones and the hypocotyl tolerance index of these genotypes was higher compared to medium tolerant genotypes Birute, PGR12489, Europe and AJ2024 at 8, 16, 32 and 64 mM AlCl3 concentrations. The hypocotyl and root tolerance index of medium tolerant genotypes was higher compared to a sensitive genotype PGR10249 at 8 and 16 mM AlCl3. The study of cluster analysis with mobile Al 0.0-65.0 mg kg-1 showed that the genotypes Zydrune, Europe, AJ2024 and 3130 were the best in terms of wintering and spring regrowth, the cultivar Malvina had the best value of wintering, height before flowering and stem number, the cultivar Birute had the best value of spring regrowth, height before flowering and seed yield, and the cultivar Skriveru had the best value of spring regrowth, height before flowering, stem number and seed yield.

RESUMEN

Aluminum oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3 NPs) are among the most extensively utilized nanoparticles in nanotechnology and that have negative impacts on the environment. Therefore, the intention of this work is to investigate the protective and therapeutic effects of curcumin in nanoform (Cur NPs) against Al2O3 NPs induced kidney toxicity, oxidative stress, DNA damage, and changes in necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expressions in male rats. Fifty healthy adult male were divided into five groups [G1, control; G2, received 50 mg/kg/day for 4 weeks of Cur NPs orally; G3, received 6 mg/kg BW orally for 4 weeks of Al2O3 NPs; G4, (Cur NPs + Al2O3 NPs) received Cur NPs and Al2O3 NPs at a dose similar to G2 and G3, respectively for 4 weeks; G5, (Al2O3 NPs + Cur NPs) received Al2O3 NPs at a dose similar to G3 for 4 weeks then received Cur NPs at a dose similar to G2 for another 4 weeks]. Current results revealed that Al2O3 NPs induced a significant elevation in serum urea, creatinine, chloride, calcium, kidney malondialdehyde (MDA), DNA damage, injury, TNFα and PCNA expressions and a significant depletion in serum potassium, kidney superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH) as compared to control. On the other hand, treatments of Al2O3 NPs with Cur NPs induced modulation in all altered parameters and improved kidney functions and structure, with best results for the Al2O3 NPs + Cur NPs than Cur NPs + Al2O3 NPs. In conclusion, Cur NPs has the capacity to mitigate the renal toxicity induced by Al2O3 NPs in male albino rats.

RESUMEN

In this study, the effects of different sizes of reinforcing particles on the corrosion behaviour and mechanical properties of aluminium (Al)-based composites produced by spark plasma sintering (SPS) are analysed. In the study, the effects of SPS parameters, including electrical power, applied pressure and sintering temperature, on the consolidation process and microstructure evolution of the composite are closely investigated. The results reveal a nuanced relationship between the sintering conditions and the properties of the particles, which in turn determine the sintering dynamics and the formation of the microstructural features. The evaluation of mechanical properties indicates a remarkable influence of particle size distribution on the hardness of the composites, showing an initial improvement with the introduction of nanoparticles, followed by a slight decrease as the balance between nano- and micron-sized Al2O3 particles shifts. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study demonstrates the influence of particle dimensions on the change of grain boundaries and the spatial arrangement of the composite matrix. Electrochemical experiments in a 0.1 M NaCl solution show a consistent corrosion potential (Ecorr) across all samples, while the current densities associated with corrosion (icorr) show considerable variation. The presence of nano-sized Al2O3 particles was found to increase corrosion resistance, in contrast to the detrimental effects observed with larger microparticles. In particular, composites with a bimodal distribution of particle sizes showed a 3.5-fold increase in corrosion resistance compared to pure Al. The specific Al-2n8mAl2O3 composite that exhibited active electrochemical properties at elevated potentials without a defined passivation range emphasises the significant role of particle size. This study draws attention to bimodal microstructures as a promising route to achieving uniformity and improved corrosion resistance in Al matrix composites, while pointing to the need for further research to fully elucidate the operative mechanisms.

RESUMEN

A hybrid organic monolithic column made of poly(lauryl methacrylate-co-1,6-hexanediol dimethacrylate) and the metal-organic framework MIL-68(Al) was prepared for the first time. The column was used in capillary liquid chromatography, both in isocratic and gradient elution modes. Separation performance towards small molecules of different chemical nature (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, alkylbenzenes, phenols, etc.) was studied. Monte Carlo simulations were made to both select the proper precursors to obtain empty metal-organic framework micropores in the monolithic polymer and also, to analyze the potential free access of the studied analytes into the micropores (necessary to improve mass transfer and column efficiency). The hereby synthesized metal-organic framework microcrystals allowed obtaining homogeneous hybrid monolithic columns. Adding of MIL-68(Al) (1030 m2 g-1 BET specific surface area) increased the surface area from 3.9 m2 g-1 for the parent monolith to 18.2 m2 g-1 for the hybrid column containing 8 mg mL-1 of the microcrystals. Chromatographic performance of this new column was evaluated by studying retention factors, resolution, and plate counts at room temperature. Different compounds, not completely resolved in the parent monolith, were partially or completely separated after metal-organic framework addition. Using the monolithic column with only 2 mg mL-1 of MIL-68(Al), five alkylbenzenes were completely separated with very symmetrical peak shapes, resolution factors up to 3.60 and plate counts of 4300 plates m-1 for n-hexylbenzene. This value is higher than those obtained by other authors who used organic monolithic columns with embedded metal-organic frameworks to perform separations at room temperature. Additionally, nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were partially or completely resolved in gradient elution mode. The hybrid monolithic columns exhibited very good intra-day (%RSD=1.9), inter-day (%RSD=2.6), and column-to-column (%RSD=4.3) reproducibility values. Easy and fast column preparation, and versatility to efficiently separate several compounds of different chemical nature in isocratic and gradient mode, makes this new hybrid column a very good option for the analysis of small molecules in capillary (or nano) HPLC.

RESUMEN

Microalgae have gained recognition as versatile candidates for the remediation of heavy metals (HMs). This study investigated the biosorption potential of Dunaliella sp. AL1 for copper (Cu(II)) and hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in aqueous solutions. The marine microalga Dunaliella sp. AL1 was exposed to half-sublethal concentrations of both metals in single and bimetallic systems, and responses in algal growth, oxidative stress, photosynthetic pigment production, and photosynthetic performance were evaluated. Cu and/or Cr exposure increased the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in microalgae cells but did not impact algal growth. In terms of photosynthesis, there was a decrease in chlorophylls and carotenoids production in the microalgae culture treated with Cr, either alone or in combination with Cu. The study recorded promising metal removal efficiencies: 26.67% - 20.11% for Cu and 94.99% - 95.51% for Cr, in single and bimetallic systems, respectively. FTIR analysis revealed an affinity of Cu and Cr ions towards aliphatic/aldehyde C-H, N-H bending, and phosphate groups, suggesting the formation of complex bonds. Biochemical analysis of microalgae biomass collected after the removal of Cr alone or in combination with Cu showed a significant decrease in total carbohydrate content and soluble protein levels. Meanwhile, higher lipid accumulation was recorded and evidenced by BODIPY 505/515 staining. Fatty acid composition analysis by GC revealed a modulation in lipid composition, with a decrease in the ratio of unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) to saturated fatty acids (SFA), in response to Cu, Cr, and Cu-Cr exposure, indicating the suitability of the biomass for sustainable biofuel production.

RESUMEN

This study explores how machining parameters affect Surface Roughness (SR), Tool Wear Rate (TWR), and Material Removal Rate (MRR) during Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) of a hybrid aluminum metal matrix composite (AMMC). The composite includes 6 % Silicon carbide (SiC) and 6 % Boron carbide (B4C) in an Aluminum 7075 (Al7075) matrix. A combined optimization approach was used to balance these factors, evaluating Pulse ON time, Current, Voltage, and Pulse OFF time. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) optimized single responses, while multi-response optimization employed a hybrid method combining the Entropy Weight Method (EWM), Taguchi approach, TOPSIS, and GRA. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) assessed parameter significance, revealing substantial impacts on SR, MRR, and EWR. Based on TOPSIS and GRA, optimized parameters achieved a desirable balance: high MRR (0.4172, 0.5240 mm³/min), minimal EWR (0.0068, 0.0103 mm³/min), and acceptable SR (10.3877, 9.1924 µm) based on EWM-weighted priorities. Confirmation experiments validated a 15 % improvement in the closeness coefficient, and a 16 % improvement in the Grey relational grade, which considers combined SR, MRR, and EWR performance. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis of surfaces machined with optimal parameters showed minimal debris, cracks, and no recast layer, indicating high surface integrity. This research enhances EDM optimization for AMMC, achieving efficiency in machining, minimizing tool wear, and meeting surface quality requirements.

RESUMEN

Aluminum (Al) is usually added to solid propellants to improve the combustion performance, however the condensed combustion products (CCPs) especially the large agglomerates generated from aluminum combustion can reduce the specific impulse of the engine, and result in two-phase loss, residue accumulation and throat liner ablation. Al and ammonium perchlorate (AP), as important components of NEPE propellants, can affect the formation process of the CCPs of aluminized NEPE propellants. To clarify the effect of Al and AP particle sizes on the properties of the CCPs of aluminized NEPE propellants, a constant-pressure quench vessel was adopted to collect the combustion products of four different formulations of NEPE propellants. It was found that the condensed combustion products are mainly divided into aluminum agglomerates and oxide particles, the diameter of the aluminum agglomerates of these four different formulations of NEPE propellants at 7 MPa was smaller than that in 3 MPa, and the shells of the aluminum agglomerates were smoother and the spherical shape was more perfect. X-ray diffraction analysis of the CCPs of the four NEPE propellants under 3 MPa revealed the presence of both Al and Al2O3. With the increase of the particle size of Al and AP, the oxidation degree of aluminum particles decreases. The particle size of the CCPs of the four different formulations of NEPE propellants under 1 and 3 MPa was analyzed by using a laser particle size analyzer, it is found that the increase of AP particle size is helpful to reduce the size of condensate combustion products. Based on the classical pocket theory, establishing a new agglomeration size prediction model, which can be used to predict the agglomeration size on the burning surface. Compared with the empirical model, the new agglomeration size prediction model is in good agreement with the experimental results.

RESUMEN

Background: Anastomotic leakage (AL) has always been one of the most serious complications of esophagectomy with gastric conduit reconstruction. There are many strong risk factors for AL in clinical practice. Notably, the tension at the esophagogastric anastomosis and the blood supply to the gastric conduit directly affect the integrity of the anastomosis. However, there has been a lack of quantitative research on the tension and blood supply of the gastric conduit. Changes in extracellular matrix collagen reflect tension and blood supply, which affect the quality of the anastomosis. This study aimed to establish a quantitative collagen score to describe changes in the collagen structure in the extracellular matrix and to identify patients at high risk of postoperative AL. Methods: A retrospective study of 213 patients was conducted. Clinical and pathological data were collected at baseline. Optical imaging of the "donut" specimen at the anastomotic gastric end and collagen feature extraction were performed. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression models were used to select the significant collagen features, compute collagen scores, and validate the predictive efficacy of the collagen scores for ALs. Results: LASSO regression analysis revealed three collagen-related parameters in the gastric donuts: histogram mean, histogram variance, and histogram energy. Based on this analysis, we established a formula to calculate the collagen score. The results of the univariate analysis revealed significant differences in the preoperative low albumin values (P=0.002) and collagen scores between the AL and non-AL groups (P=0.001), while the results of the multivariate analysis revealed significant differences in the collagen scores between the AL and non-AL groups (P=0.002). The areas under the curve (AUCs) of the experimental and validation cohorts were 0.978 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.931-0.996] and 0.900 (95% CI: 0.824-0.951), respectively. Conclusions: The collagen score established herein was shown to be related to AL and can be used to predict AL in patients who underwent esophagectomy.

RESUMEN

Abu Bakr Muhammad Ibn Zakariya Al-Razi, also known as Rhazes, was a 10th-century Persian polymath who made significant contributions to medicine, philosophy, chemistry, and psychiatry. He is credited with founding the first psychiatric ward in Baghdad, highlighting the medical treatment of mental illnesses. His empirical and innovative approaches to clinical observation and experimentation laid the basis for modern evidence-based medicine. Al-Razi's comprehensive works, such as "The Comprehensive Book," profoundly influenced both Islamic and European medical practices, securing his legacy as a pivotal figure in medical history. Therefore, the primary objective of this narrative review is to revisit the remarkable contributions of Al-Razi in the field of psychiatry, specifically highlighting his role as the founder of the first psychiatric ward.

RESUMEN

The shuttle effect of aluminum polysulfides (AlPSs) have been a source of concern for studying Al/S batteries. Due to the weak adsorption of CS composites, research on cathode materials for Al/S batteries has been delayed. As it is generally known that Al2S3 decomposition demands a large Gibbs free energy, this work has tried to reduce the Al2S3 decomposition potential energy. Herein, the Ni/Co bimetallic selenide reduces the energy barrier conversion and mitigates the polarization effects, while morphology control enables the storage and anchoring of S, alleviating the shuttle effect. Additionally, the intermediate products serve as single-atom catalysts, increasing the active sites, synergistically enhancing the ion diffusion kinetics. DFT calculations verify that NiCo2Se4 has a moderate Gibbs free energy change during the rate-limiting step of S reduction and the most robust adsorption energy to Al2S3. NiCo2Se4@CS2/Al has a remaining capacity of 135 mAh/g after 450 cycles (at 200 mA g-1), pioneering novel ideas for the development of Al/S batteries.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the diagnostic performance of liver stiffness for detecting liver involvement in immunoglobulin light chain (AL) amyloidosis. METHODS: Liver stiffness was measured using transient elastography in 71 patients with systemic AL amyloidosis and 18 patients with wild type transthyretin (ATTRwt) amyloidosis with cardiomyopathy. Both non-invasive consensus criteria and serum amyloid P component (SAP) scintigraphy were used as substitute standards instead of liver biopsy for establishing liver involvement. RESULTS: Liver stiffness was higher in AL amyloidosis patients with liver involvement than in those without: this was observed using both consensus criteria (median 14.4 kPa vs. 8.1 kPa; p = 0.001) and SAP scintigraphy (median 20.9 kPa vs. 6.2 kPa; p < 0.001). Liver stiffness was also higher in AL amyloidosis patients with liver involvement compared to AL and ATTRwt amyloidosis patients with cardiac involvement. Based on receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves a cut-off value of 14.4 kPa for stiffness was optimal to indicate liver involvement, providing sensitivity and specificity of 50% and 74%, respectively, using the consensus criteria and 63% and 90%, respectively, using SAP scintigraphy as standard. CONCLUSION: Liver stiffness is a promising tool to establish liver involvement in AL amyloidosis having potential to become part of updated criteria for liver involvement.

RESUMEN

We report on the rehabilitation of a patient with amyloid light chain (AL) amyloidosis complicated by nephrotic syndrome. Various symptoms produced by AL amyloidosis, including nephrotic syndrome, complicate rehabilitation therapy. In this case report, long-term physical therapy was initiated prior to autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation owing to the risk of further decline in physical function due to decreased mobility and physical activity. Patients were instructed on how to perform home exercise therapy. Furthermore, compliance was monitored using a checklist and regular face-to-face feedback. There was no increase in skeletal muscle mass, but improvements in grip strength, lower extremity muscle strength, and phase angle were observed after 24 weeks of physical therapy. Despite the absence of partial remission (urinary protein level of 3.5 g/gCre or higher), nephrotic syndrome demonstrated a trend toward improvement. Since the effectiveness of physical therapy in such patients has not yet been fully established, this report suggests that long-term rehabilitation therapy for physical function in patients with nephrotic syndrome complicated by persistent proteinuria may be effective.
