To this date, COVID-19 remains an unresolved pandemic, and the impairment of redox homeostasis dictates the severity of clinical outcomes. Here we examined initial UCLA cohort of 440 COVID-19 patients hospitalized between March 1st and April 1st, 2020, representing the first wave of the pandemic. The mean age was 58.88 ± 21.12, among which males were significantly more than females (55.5 % vs. 44.5 %), most distinctively in age group of 50-69. The age groups of 50-69 (33.6 %) and ≥70 (34.8 %) dominated. The racial composition was in general agreement with Census data with slight under-representation of Hispanics and Asians, and over-representation of Caucasians. Smoking was a significant factor (28.8 % vs. 11.0 % in LA population), likewise for obesity (BMI ≥30) (37.4 % vs. 27.7 % in LA population). Patients suffering from obesity or BMI<18.5 checked into ICU at a significantly higher rate. A 74.5 % of the patients had comorbidities including diabetes, chronic kidney disease, chronic pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure and peripheral vascular disease. The levels of d-dimer were drastically upregulated (1159.5 ng/mL), indicating hypercoagulative state. Upregulated LDH (328 IU/L) indicated significant tissue damages. A distorted redox hemeostasis is a common trait associated with these risk factors and clinical markers. A quarter of the patients received antivirals, among which Remdesivir most prescribed (23.6 %). Majority received antithrombotics (75 %), and antibiotics. Upon admission, 67 patients were intubated or received CPR; 177 patients eventually received intensive care (40.2 %). While 290 were discharged alive, 10 remained hospitalized, 73 were transferred, and 36 died with 3 palliatively discharged. In summary, our data fully characterized a Californian cohort of COVID-19 at the breaking phase of the pandemic, indicating that population demographics, biophysical characters, comorbidities and molecular pathological parameters have significant impacts on the evolvement of a pandemic. These provide critical insights into effective management of COVID-19, and future break from another pathogen.

The oceanographic conditions of the Southern California Bight (SCB) dictate the distribution and abundance of prey resources and therefore the presence of mobile predators, such as goose-beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris). Goose-beaked whales are deep-diving odontocetes that spend a majority of their time foraging at depth. Due to their cryptic behavior, little is known about how they respond to seasonal and interannual changes in their environment. This study utilizes passive acoustic data recorded from two sites within the SCB to explore the oceanographic conditions that goose-beaked whales appear to favor. Utilizing optimum multiparameter analysis, modeled temperature and salinity data are used to identify and quantify these source waters: Pacific Subarctic Upper Water (PSUW), Pacific Equatorial Water (PEW), and Eastern North Pacific Central Water (ENPCW). The interannual and seasonal variability in goose-beaked whale presence was related to the variability in El Niño Southern Oscillation events and the fraction and vertical distribution of the three source waters. Goose-beaked whale acoustic presence was highest during the winter and spring and decreased during the late summer and early fall. These seasonal increases occurred at times of increased fractions of PEW in the California Undercurrent and decreased fractions of ENPCW in surface waters. Interannual increases in goose-beaked whale presence occurred during El Niño events. These results establish a baseline understanding of the oceanographic characteristics that correlate with goose-beaked whale presence in the SCB. Furthering our knowledge of this elusive species is key to understanding how anthropogenic activities impact goose-beaked whales.

Air pollution exposure is associated with adverse respiratory health outcomes. Evidence from occupational and community-based studies also suggests agricultural pesticides have negative health impacts on respiratory health. Although populations are exposed to multiple inhalation hazards simultaneously, multidomain mixtures (e.g. environmental and chemical pollutants of different classes) are rarely studied. We investigated the association of ambient air pollution-pesticide exposure mixtures with urinary leukotriene E4 (LTE4), a respiratory inflammation biomarker, for 75 participants in four Central California communities over two seasons. Exposures included three criteria air pollutants estimated via the Community Multiscale Air Quality model (fine particulate matter, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide) and urinary metabolites of organophosphate (OP) pesticides (total dialkyl phosphates (DAPs), total diethyl phosphates (DE), and total dimethyl phosphates (DM)). We implemented multiple linear regression models to examine associations in single pollutant models adjusted for age, sex, asthma status, occupational status, household member occupational status, temperature, and relative humidity, and evaluated whether associations changed seasonally. We then implemented Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) to analyse these criteria air pollutants, DE, and DM as a mixture. Our multiple linear regression models indicated an interquartile range (IQR) increase in total DAPs was associated with an increase in urinary LTE4 in winter (ß: 0.04, 95% CI: [0.01, 0.07]). Similarly, an IQR increase in total DM was associated with an increase in urinary LTE4 in winter (ß:0.03, 95% CI: [0.004, 0.06]). Confidence intervals for all criteria air pollutant effect estimates included the null value. BKMR analysis revealed potential non-linear interactions between exposures in our air pollution-pesticide mixture, but all confidence intervals contained the null value. Our analysis demonstrated a positive association between OP pesticide metabolites and urinary LTE4 in a low asthma prevalence population and adds to the limited research on the joint effects of ambient air pollution and pesticides mixtures on respiratory health.

DNA metabarcoding and stable isotope analysis have significantly advanced our understanding of marine trophic ecology, aiding systematic research on foraging habits and species conservation. In this study, we employed these methods to analyse faecal and blood samples, respectively, to compare the trophic ecology of two Red-billed Tropicbird (Phaethonaethereus; Linnaeus, 1758) colonies on Mexican islands in the Pacific. Trophic patterns among different breeding stages were also examined at both colonies. Dietary analysis reveals a preference for epipelagic fish, cephalopods, and small crustaceans, with variations between colonies and breeding stages. Isotopic values (δ15N and δ13C) align with DNA metabarcoding results, with wider niches during incubation stages. Differences in diet are linked to environmental conditions and trophic plasticity among breeding stages, influenced by changing physiological requirements and prey availability. Variations in dietary profiles reflect contrasting environmental conditions affecting local prey availability.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant complication in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), leading to increased mortality. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the burden of CKD in Medicaid-enrolled adults with SCD in California, examine differences in disease burden between male and female individuals, and assess mortality rates and access to specialized care. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used the California Sickle Cell Data Collection program to identify and monitor individuals with SCD. Medicaid claims, vital records, emergency department, and hospitalization data from 2011 to 2020 were analyzed. CKD prevalence was assessed based on ICD (International Classification of Diseases) codes, and mortality rates were calculated. Access to specialized care was examined through outpatient encounter rates with hematologists and nephrologists. RESULTS: Among the 2345 adults with SCD, 24.4% (n=572) met the case definition for CKD. The SCD-CKD group was older at the beginning of this study (average age 44, SD 14 vs 34, SD 12.6 years) than the group without CKD. CKD prevalence increased with age, revealing significant disparities by sex. While the youngest (18-29 years) and oldest (>65 years) groups showed similar CKD prevalences between sexes (female: 12/111, 10.8% and male: 12/101, 11.9%; female: 74/147, 50.3% and male: 34/66, 51.5%, respectively), male individuals in the aged 30-59 years bracket exhibited significantly higher rates than female individuals (30-39 years: 49/294, 16.7%, P=.01; 40-49 years: 52/182, 28.6%, P=.02; and 50-59 years: 76/157,48.4%, P<.001). During this study, of the 2345 adults, 435 (18.5%) deaths occurred, predominantly within the SCD-CKD cohort (226/435, 39.5%). The median age at death was 53 (IQR 61-44) years for the SCD-CKD group compared to 43 (IQR 33-56) years for the SCD group, with male individuals in the SCD-CKD group showing significantly higher mortality rates (111/242, 45.9%; P=.009) than female individuals (115/330, 34.9%). Access to specialist care was notably limited: approximately half (281/572, 49.1%) of the SCD-CKD cohort had no hematologist visits, and 61.9% (354/572) did not see a nephrologist during this study's period. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides robust estimates of CKD prevalence and mortality among Medicaid-enrolled adults with SCD in California. The findings highlight the need for improved access to specialized care for this population and increased awareness of the high mortality risk and progression associated with CKD.

Streamflow regimes that maintain vital functions and processes of aquatic ecosystems are critical to sustaining ecosystem health. In rivers with altered flow regimes, restoring components of the natural flow regime is predicted to conserve freshwater biodiversity by supporting ecological functions and geomorphological processes to which native communities are adapted. However, the effectiveness of environmental flow restoration is poorly understood because of inadequate monitoring and uncertainty in ecological responses to managed changes in specific, quantifiable aspects of the annual streamflow regime. Here, we used time series models to analyze 25 years of fish assemblage data collected before and after environmental flow implementation in a dammed river in California, USA. We examined the response of the fish community to changes in individual components of the flow regime known to support ecosystem functions. We found that as functional flow components shifted toward their predicted natural range, the quasi-extinction risk (likelihood of population declines of >80%) decreased for the native fish assemblage. Following environmental flow implementation, observed changes toward natural ranges of dry season duration, fall pulse flow magnitude, and wet season timing each reduced quasi-extinction risk by at least 40% for the native assemblage. However, functional flow components that shifted away from their predicted natural range, including lower spring recession flows and higher dry season baseflow, resulted in greater quasi-extinction risk for native species. In contrast, non-native species decreased in abundance when flow components shifted toward predicted natural ranges and increased when components shifted away from their natural range. Although most functional flow components remained outside of their natural range following environmental flow implementation, our results indicate that even moderate shifts toward a natural flow regime can benefit native and suppress non-native fish species. Overall, this study provides the most compelling evidence to date of the effectiveness of functional environmental flows in supporting native fish recovery in a highly regulated river.

The American black bear, Ursus americanus, is a widespread and ecologically important species in North America. In California, the black bear plays an important role in a variety of ecosystems and serves as an important species for recreational hunting. While research suggests that the populations in California are currently healthy, continued monitoring is critical to maintaining healthy populations, with genomic analyses providing an important surveillance tool. Here we report a high-quality, near chromosome-level genome assembly from a U. americanus sample from California. The primary assembly has a total length of 2.5 Gb contained in 317 scaffolds, a contig N50 of 58.9 Mb, a scaffold N50 of 67.6 Mb, and a BUSCO completeness score of 96%. This U. americanus genome assembly from a California sample will provide an important resource for the targeted management of black bear populations in California, with the goal of achieving an appropriate balance between the recreational value of black bears and the maintenance of viable populations. The high quality of this genome assembly will also make it a valuable resource for comparative genomic analyses among black bear populations and among bear species.

Background: Subclinical mastitis in camels, an inflammation of the udder without visible signs, can reduce milk quality and raise bacteria levels. Regular monitoring of camel milk is crucial for consumer safety. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in Jigjiga city, Ethiopia to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of subclinical mastitis in she-camels. The study included 244 lactating she-camels from three privately-owned camel dairy farms, and a questionnaire survey was conducted with 60 camel owners. Results: The overall prevalence of subclinical mastitis in she-camels was 10.6% (26/244), with no significant difference among the studied dairy farms. Risk factors that influenced the result of California Mastitis Test (CMT) included age and udder and leg hygiene. The study revealed that S. aureus was the most prevalent bacterium among the isolated bacteria, with a prevalence rate of 34.5%. This was followed by S. agalactiae, S. dysgalactiae, and Pasteurella multocida, with prevalence rates of 29.8, 19.4, and 16.2%, respectively. Among the isolated bacteria, 84.5% were sensitive to Erythromycin, 60% to Streptomycin, 44.7% to Oxytetracycline, and 36.7% to Tetracycline. Interviews with camel owners revealed that 66.7% used mixed herd grazing methods and reported feed shortage. Treatment practices for sick camels included modern veterinary drugs, traditional medicines, or a combination of both. The owners of camel dairy farms did not maintain proper hygiene practices during milking, such as not using soap when washing hands. Conclusion: Addressing camel mastitis necessitates access to alternative drugs, comprehensive herder training, and enhanced management practices.

Hospices in California have undergone significant and complicated ownership changes in recent years. Little is known about the impact of these ownership changes on hospices. The purpose of our longitudinal, retrospective descriptive study was to describe the ownership changes impacting hospices 2018 to 2021 in California. Using descriptive statistics, we measured characteristics of hospices with and without ownership changes employing public data from the California Home Health Agencies and Hospice Annual Utilization Report. Ownership change characteristics were measured via publicly available hospice provider and facility data. Spatial characteristics were additionally measured via latitude and longitude publicly available data. Our findings showed that ownership changes were significant and complicated. An influx of for-profit organizations into the California market was primarily responsible for these changes. Additionally, lack of corporate financial public disclosure and voluntary hospice accreditation, certification, and reporting result in a lack of free, publicly available, definitive comprehensive data on for-profit hospice ownership. This hinders information gathering on and provider/familial choice-making regarding hospices. Our study provides critical insight into the impact of ownership changes and lack of definitive, free, publicly available information on adult hospices in California caring for children and has important clinical, research, and policy implications.

Monomethylmercury (MMHg) is a neurotoxicant that biomagnifies in marine food webs, reaching high concentrations in apex predators. To predict changes in oceanic MMHg concentrations, it is important to quantify the sources and sinks of MMHg. Here, we study mercury speciation in the California Current System through cruise sampling and modeling. Previous work in the California Current System has found that upwelling transports mercury-enriched deep waters to productive surface waters. These upwelled waters originate within the California Undercurrent water mass and are subsequently advected as a surface water parcel to the California Current. Between the two major water masses, we find that compared to the California Current, the California Undercurrent contains elevated dissolved total mercury (THg) and dimethylmercury (DMHg) concentrations by 59 and 69%, respectively. We explain that these differences result from losses during advection, specifically scavenging of THg and DMHg demethylation. We calculate a net DMHg demethylation rate of 2.0 ± 1.1% d-1 and build an empirically constrained mass budget model to demonstrate that net DMHg demethylation accounts for 61% of surface MMHg sources. These findings illustrate that DMHg is a significant source of MMHg in this region, challenging the current understanding of the major sources of marine MMHg.

In many biparental mammals, such as California mice (Peromyscus californicus), fathers display affiliative behavior toward unfamiliar infants whereas reproductively naïve adult males show highly variable responses. Sources of this variability are not well understood, but evidence suggests that stress can either enhance or inhibit alloparental care. We evaluated immediate and delayed effects of acute stress on pup-directed behavior in adult virgin male California mice. Mice underwent three 10-minute tests with unfamiliar pups at 48-hour intervals. Stressed mice (N=22) received a subcutaneous oil injection immediately before tests 1 and 2, whereas controls (N=22) were left undisturbed. In controls, but not stressed mice, latency to approach the pup decreased and duration of alloparental behavior increased across the three tests. At each time point, stressed males were less likely than controls to perform alloparental behavior. Controls spent significantly more time performing alloparental behavior than stressed mice in tests 1 and 2 but not in test 3. Pup-directed aggression did not differ between the groups at any time point. These findings suggest that acute stress can both inhibit alloparental behavior in the short term and prevent the increase in alloparental behavior that typically occurs with repeated exposure to pups in virgin male California mice.

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) - tumour-associated chelonid alphaherpesvirus 5 (ChHV5; Scutavirus chelonidalpha5) - is a disease that affect marine turtles around the world, and characterized by the formation of cutaneous tumours that can appear anywhere on the body. We carried out a thorough literature search (from 1990 to 2024) in the feeding sites of North-western Mexico, a region that hosts important habitats for feeding, development, and reproduction for five of the seven existing sea turtle species. We found 18 reports recording a total of 32 cases of FP and/or ChHV5/Scutavirus chelonidalpha5 in coastal and insular areas of North-western Mexico. Baja California Sur resulted with the highest number of cases (75%). While the first case of ChHV5/Scutavirus chelonidalpha5 infection was reported in 2004, the presence of FP tumours was reported in 2014 and became more frequent between 2019 and 2024. The affected species were black, Chelonia mydas (50%), olive ridley, Lepidochelys olivacea (46.8%) and loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta (3.2%). Tumours occurred mainly in anterior flippers (46.1%) and neck (22.5%), and most had a nodular and verrucous appearance with a rough surface. In the study region, there is a potential sign of the emergence of the ChHV5/Scutavirus chelonidalpha5 infections and FP disease during the last 20 years, with a rapid increase during the last 10 years. As long as infections by ChHV5/Scutavirus chelonidalpha5 and the prevalence of the FP disease may be potentially influenced by anthropogenic activities, a One Health approach is needed to understand and improve sea turtles' health.

BACKGROUND: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides supplemental healthy foods to children aged <5 y in low-income households. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to characterize WIC benefit redemption, identify associations between benefit redemption and child dietary intake, and whether child age modifies these associations. METHODS: The cross-sectional 2023 California Statewide WIC Survey, conducted with caregivers of WIC-participating children aged 1-4 y, was analyzed for this study. Included children had complete benefit redemption data, a complete National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Dietary Screener Questionnaire (DSQ), and complete covariate data (weighted n = 2244). Monthly household category-specific benefit redemption percentage was averaged across 6 and 3 mo preceding survey completion. Associations between household redemption and child dietary intake (servings or amount/day) were assessed with multivariable linear regression and expressed as estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: Twenty-five percent higher redemption of breakfast cereal, whole grain bread, yogurt and whole milk in the 6 mo prior to the survey were associated with higher child intake frequency for cereal (0.02 servings/d; 95% CI: 0.00, 0.04), whole grain bread (0.02 servings/d; 95% CI: 0.00, 0.03), yogurt (0.04 servings/d; 95% CI: 0.02, 0.06), and whole milk (0.09 servings/d; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.16). Significant effect modification by child age (12 to <24 mo, 24-59 mo) was found for redemption of cheese/tofu and 100% juice (P-interaction = 0.02 and 0.001, respectively), and 25% higher redemption of these benefits were associated with lower intake frequency for cheese (-0.05 servings/d; 95% CI: -0.09, -0.02) and higher intake frequency for juice (0.12 servings/d; 95% CI: 0.06, 0.18), but only among children ages 12 to <24 mo. CONCLUSIONS: Higher redemption was associated with higher child intake of select WIC foods. Pairing the promotion of benefit redemption among program participants with nutrition education efforts may enhance dietary impacts of WIC participation.

The neural mechanisms underlying paternal care in biparental mammals are not well understood. The California mouse (Peromyscus californicus) is a biparental rodent in which virtually all fathers are attracted to pups, while virgin males vary widely in their behavior toward unrelated infants, ranging from attacking to avoiding to huddling and grooming pups. We previously showed that pharmacologically inhibiting the synthesis of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine (NE) with the dopamine ß-hydroxylase inhibitor nepicastat reduced the propensity of virgin male and female California mice to interact with pups. The current study tested the hypothesis that nepicastat would reduce pup-induced c-Fos immunoreactivity, a cellular marker of neural activity, in the medial preoptic area (MPOA), medial amygdala (MeA), basolateral amygdala (BLA), and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), brain regions implicated in the control of parental behavior and/or anxiety. Virgin males were injected with nepicastat (75 mg/kg, i.p.) or vehicle 2 hours prior to exposure to either an unrelated pup or novel object for 60 minutes (n = 4-6 mice per group). Immediately following the 60-minute stimulus exposure, mice were euthanized and their brains were collected for c-Fos immunohistochemistry. Nepicastat reduced c-Fos expression in the MeA and MPOA of pup-exposed virgin males compared to vehicle-injected controls. In contrast, nepicastat did not alter c-Fos expression in any of the above brain regions following exposure to a novel object. Overall, these results suggest that the noradrenergic system might influence MeA and MPOA function to promote behavioral interactions with pups in virgin males.

In the United States and abroad, ortho-phthalates and non-ortho-phthalate plasticizers continue to be used within a diverse array of consumer products. Prior California-specific biomonitoring programs for ortho-phthalates have focused on rural, agricultural communities and, to our knowledge, these programs have not measured the potential for exposure to non-ortho-phthalate plasticizers. Therefore, the potential for human exposure to ortho-phthalates and non-ortho-phthalate plasticizers have not been adequately addressed in regions of California that have higher population density. Since there are numerous sources of ortho-phthalates and non-ortho-phthalate plasticizers in population-dense, urban regions, the objective of this study was to leverage silicone wristbands to quantify aggregate ortho-phthalate and non-ortho-phthalate plasticizer exposure over a 5-day period across two different cohorts (2019 and 2020) of undergraduate students at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) that commute from all over Southern California. Based on 5 d of aggregate exposure across two different cohorts, total ortho-phthalate plus non-ortho-phthalate plasticizer concentrations ranged, on average, from ∼100,000-1,000,000 ng/g. Based on the distribution of individual ortho-phthalate and non-ortho-phthalate plasticizer concentrations, the concentrations of di-isononyl phthalate (DiNP, a high molecular weight ortho-phthalate), di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP, a high molecular weight ortho-phthalate), and di-2-ethylhexyl terephthalate (DEHT, a non-ortho-phthalate plasticizer) detected within wristbands were higher than the remaining seven ortho-phthalates and non-ortho-phthalate plasticizers measured, accounting for approximately 94-97% of the total mass depending on the cohort. Overall, our findings raise concerns about chronic DiNP, DEHP, and DEHT exposure in urban, population-dense regions throughout California.

Observations from the California Current System (CalCS) indicate that the long-term trend in ocean acidification (OA) and the naturally occurring corrosive conditions for the CaCO3 mineral aragonite (saturation state Ω < 1) have a damaging effect on shelled pteropods, a keystone group of calcifying organisms in the CalCS. Concern is heightened by recent findings suggesting that shell formation and developmental progress are already impacted when Ω falls below 1.5. Here, we quantify the impact of low Ω conditions on pteropods using an individual-based model (IBM) with life-stage-specific mortality, growth, and behavior in a high-resolution regional hindcast simulation of the CalCS between 1984 and 2019. Special attention is paid to attributing this impact to different processes that lead to such low Ω conditions, namely natural variability, long-term trend, and extreme events. We find that much of the observed damage in the CalCS, and specifically >70% of the shell CaCO3 loss, is due to the pteropods' exposure to naturally occurring low Ω conditions as a result of their diel vertical migration (DVM). Over the hindcast period, their exposure to damaging waters (Ω < 1.5) increases from 9% to 49%, doubling their shell CaCO3 loss, and increasing their mortality by ~40%. Most of this increased exposure is due to the shoaling of low Ω waters driven by the long-term trend in OA. Extreme OA events amplify this increase by ~40%. Our approach can quantify the health of pteropod populations under shifting environmental conditions, and attribute changes in fitness or population structure to changes in the stressor landscape across hierarchical time scales.

CONTEXT: In 2012, California instituted a new requirement for parents to consult with a clinician before receiving a personal belief exemption to its school entry vaccine mandate. In 2015, the state removed this exemption altogether. In 2019, legislators cracked down on medical exemptions to address their misuse by vaccine refusers and supportive clinicians. This paper explores these political conflicts using 'policy feedback theory,' arguing that personal belief exemptions informed the emergence and approaches of two coalitions whose conflict reshaped California's vaccination policies. METHODS: We analysed legal, policy, academic and media documents; interviewed ten key informants; and deductively analysed transcripts using NVivo 20 transcription software. FINDINGS: California's long-standing vaccination policy inadvertently disseminated two fundamentally incompatible social norms: vaccination is a choice; vaccination is not a choice. Over time, the culture and number of vaccine refusers grew, at least in part because the policy state-sanctioned the norm of vaccine refusal. CONCLUSIONS: The long-term consequences of California's 'mandate + PBE' policy - visible, public, and socially sanctioned vaccine refusal - undermined support for it over time, generating well-defined losses for a large group of people (the vaccinating public) and specifically for the parent activists whose experiences of personal grievance drove their mobilisation for change.

Rice seedlings of different stages of development were infested with tadpole shrimp (TPS, Triops longicaudatus [LeConte]), of different sizes in four experiments conducted in a lath house in Colusa, CA, during 2015 and 2016. Tadpole shrimp size was based on carapace length. Rice seedling stages were classified as S0 if no structures were present; S1 if only the coleoptile was present; S2 if the coleoptile and radicle were present; S3-I if the prophyll had emerged; S3-II if the first true leave had emerged but was not unfurled; and V1 if the first true leave was unfurled. Results showed that TPS of all sizes are capable of injuring rice and reducing seedling establishment, with larger TPS causing more seedling establishment reduction than medium or small TPS. The coleoptile, radicle, and roots were the structures most injured by TPS. During the S0 stage, TPS buried seeds, preventing their establishment. Seedling stages S1, S2, and S3-I were found to have the highest risk of injury by TPS, while seedling stage V1 had the lowest. Pearson's correlation between injured seedlings and the normalized number of established seedlings indicates that injury to the coleoptile, root, and radicle combined are the most important in preventing seedling establishment.

RESUMEN

On April 28, 2023, the University of California Office of the President, in partnership with the California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC), hosted the California Cannabis Research Briefing. The California Cannabis Research Briefing brought together researchers and state agencies/policymakers to discuss pertinent policy issues on cannabis within the state. Researchers across six different topic areas (environment, cannabis markets, social equity matters, public health, medicinal cannabis use, and public safety) provided brief explanations of their research and its policy implications. A moderated discussion with stakeholders followed these presentations. The goals of this event were to highlight research that can inform policy issues relevant to the state, and to discuss how research can be incorporated into the cannabis policy landscape.
