RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pectus excavatum (PE) is a common congenital chest wall deformity with various associated health concerns, including psychosocial impacts, academic challenges, and potential cardiopulmonary effects. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the cardiac consequences of right atrioventricular groove compression in PE using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 661 patients with PE referred for evaluation. Patients were categorized into three groups based on the degree of right atrioventricular groove compression (no compression (NC), partial compression (PC), and complete compression(CC)). Chest wall indices were measured: pectus index (PI), depression index (DI), correction index (CI), and sternal torsion. RESULTS: The study revealed significant differences in chest wall indices between the groups: PE, NC=4.15 ± 0.94, PC=4.93 ± 1.24, and CC=7.2 ± 4.01 (P<0.0001). Left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) showed no significant differences: LVEF, NC=58.72% ± 3.94, PC=58.49% ± 4.02, and CC=57.95% ± 3.92 (P=0.0984). Right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) demonstrated significant differences: RVEF, NC=55.2% ± 5.3, PC=53.8% ± 4.4, and CC=53.1% ± 4.8 (P≥0.0001). Notably, the tricuspid valve (TV) measurement on the four-chamber view decreased in patients with greater compression: NC=29.52 ± 4.6; PC=28.26 ± 4.8; and CC=24.74 ± 5.73 (P<0.0001). CONCLUSION: This study provides valuable insights into the cardiac consequences of right atrioventricular groove compression in PE and lends further evidence of mild cardiac changes due to PE.

RESUMEN

Borehole samples were collected from a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill in Xi'an, China, and subjected to a series of basic geotechnical and compression tests. This study aims to investigate the influence of composition, dry unit weight, moisture content, organic content, and landfill age on the compressibility of MSW. The results show that with increasing landfill age, the compressible components and organic content exhibit a decreasing trend while the dry unit weight increases. The moisture content does not vary significantly. There is also a linear trend between the logarithm of the primary compression strain and vertical stress. In addition, with an increase in compressible components content, moisture content, and organic content, the modified primary compression index (Cc') shows an increasing trend, whereas with an increase in dry unit weight and landfill age, Cc' shows a decreasing trend. Furthermore, regarding the 34 sets of data, authors only selected five data points for a detailed comparative analysis, this decision was made on the basis that these data points are representative. A modified primary compression index prediction model that considers the dry unit weight, moisture content, and landfill age of the MSW as influencing factors results in a fitting coefficient of 0.797. The Cc' values in this study are within the range of 0.12 to 0.36. These findings provide a reference for the vertical expansion design of existing landfills.

RESUMEN

Tailings dam is a man-made hazard with high potential energy; dam failure would cause great losses to human lives and properties. However, the limitations of conventional reinforcement methods like geosynthetic make it easy to slide along the weak structural plane. In this paper, we innovatively added basalt fibre (BF) with different lengths (l) and contents (ω) into tailings to study its mechanical and permeation characteristics. The results indicate that BF can improve the shear strength (τ), cohesion (c) and compression index (Cc ) of tailings, but it has little effect on internal friction angle (φ). When l is constant, τ, c and Cc are positively correlated with ω. One notable phenomenon is that τ and c do not constantly increase with l when ω is constant, but obtain the maximum under the optimal length of 6 mm. Moreover, when ω > 0.6%, permeability coefficient (k) is greater than that of the original tailings and the sensitivity of c, φ, τ, Cc , k to fibre content is greater than that of length. The research results facilitate the understanding of BF reinforced tailings, and could serve as references for improving the safety of tailings dam and other artificial soil slopes or soil structures.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Pectus excavatum (PE) is a chest wall deformity of variable severity and symptomatology. Existing female-specific literature highlights breast asymmetry and cosmetic reconstruction. We sought to evaluate gender differences in cardiopulmonary function. METHODS: Cardiac MRIs, pulmonary function tests (PFTs), and cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPETs) were reviewed in 345 patients undergoing preoperative evaluation for PE. Regression modeling was used to evaluate associations between gender and clinical endpoints of cardiopulmonary function. RESULTS: Mean age was 15.2 years, 19% were female, 98% were white. Pectus indices included median Haller Index (HI) of 4.8, mean depression index (DI) of 0.63, correction index (CI) of 33.6%, and Cardiac Compression Index (CCI) of 2.79. Cardiac assessment revealed decreased right and left ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF, LVEF) in 16% and 22% of patients, respectively. PFTs and CPETs were abnormal in ~ 30% of patients. While females had deeper PE deformities-represented by higher pectus indices-they had superior function with higher RVEF, LVEF Z-scores, FEV1, VO2 max, O2 pulse, work, and breathing reserve (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Despite worse PE deformity and symptomatology, females had a better cardiopulmonary function and exercise tolerance than males. Further research is needed to assess the precise mechanisms of this phenomenon and postoperative outcomes in this population.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the relationship between cervical cord compression and factors related to whole-spine sagittal balance. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included patients who visited our clinic for the evaluation of lumbar pathology including trauma and degeneration. Patients aged 60-89 years who underwent whole-spine sagittal T2 scout magnetic resonance imaging and whole-spine radiograph between 2014 and 2018 were included in our study. We consecutively enrolled 100 patients for our study without any prejudice. We collected data on patient characteristics, diagnosis, cervical cord compression index (CCI), sagittal vertical axis (C7-S1, C2-7), and other parameters related to sagittal balance such as pelvic incidence minus lumbar lordosis. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to compare CCI with each whole-spine sagittal balance parameter. RESULTS: Of the 100 patients, 44 were men. The mean age was 74.21 years. On the basis of Pearson correlation coefficients, CCI showed the strongest positive linear correlation with C7-S1 sagittal vertical axis (r = 0.688; P < 0.01), followed by the C2-7 sagittal vertical axis (r = 0.563; P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Cervical cord compression is more likely to develop in patients with sagittal imbalance. It is important to use whole-spine radiograph and whole-spine T2 scout magnetic resonance imaging to analyze CCI in these patients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Plant exudates greatly affect the physical behaviour of soil, but measurements of the impact of exudates on compression characteristics are missing. Our aim is to provide these data and explore how plant exudates may enhance the restructuring of compacted soils following cycles of wetting and drying. METHODS: Two soils were amended with Chia (Salvia hispanica) seed exudate at 5 concentrations, compacted in cores to 200 kPa stress (equivalent to tractor stress), equilibrated to -50 kPa matric potential, and then compacted to 600 kPa (equivalent to axial root stress) followed by 3 cycles of wetting and drying and recompression to 600 kPa at -50 kPa matric potential. Penetration resistance (PR), compression index (CC) and pore characteristics were measured at various steps. RESULTS: PR decreased and CC increased with increasing exudate concentration. At 600 kPa compression, 1.85 mg exudate g-1 soil increased CC from 0.37 to 0.43 for sandy loam soil and from 0.50 to 0.54 for clay loam soil. After 3 wetting-drying cycles the clay loam was more resillient than the sandy loam soil, with resilience increasing with greater exudate concentration. Root growth modelled on PR data suggested plant exudates significantly eased root elongation in soil. CONCLUSION: Plant exudates improve compression characteristics of soils, easing penetration and enhancing recovery of root induced soil compaction.

RESUMEN

The compression index and recompression index are one of the important compressibility parameters to determine the settlement calculation for fine-grained soil layers. These parameters can be determined by carrying out laboratory oedometer test on undisturbed samples; however, the test is quite time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, many empirical formulas based on regression analysis have been presented to estimate the compressibility parameters using soil index properties. In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN) model is suggested for prediction of compressibility parameters from basic soil properties. For this purpose, the input parameters are selected as the natural water content, initial void ratio, liquid limit and plasticity index. In this model, two output parameters, including compression index and recompression index, are predicted in a combined network structure. As the result of the study, proposed ANN model is successful for the prediction of the compression index, however the predicted recompression index values are not satisfying compared to the compression index.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Dorsal compressive lesions at the atlantoaxial junction (ie, AA bands) occur in dogs with Chiari-like malformations (CMs), but their clinical relevance is unclear. OBJECTIVE: Investigate the influence of AA bands on clinical status and syringomyelia (SM) in mature cavalier King Charles spaniels (CKCS). ANIMALS: Thirty-six CKCS, 5-12 years of age, including 20 dogs with neuropathic pain. METHODS: Dogs were examined and assigned a neurologic grade. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the craniocervical junction was performed with the craniocervical junction extended and flexed (ie, normal standing position). Imaging studies were assessed for the presence of an AA band, CM, SM or some combination of these findings. Band and SM severity were quantified using an objective compression index and ordinal grading scale, respectively. RESULTS: Of 36 CKCS imaged, 34 had CM. Atlantoaxial bands were associated with the presence (P = .0031) but not the severity (P = .008) of clinical signs, whereas their presence was associated with both the presence and severity of SM (P = .0147, P = .0311, respectively ). Higher compression indices were associated with more severe SM (P = .0137). CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of AA bands in older CKCS is high. Positioning of dogs in extension during MRI enhances the sensitivity of the study for detecting this important abnormality. There were significant associations among AA bands, clinical signs, and SM in dogs with CM; additional work is needed to understand whether or not this relationship is causal.

RESUMEN

As a methodology for characterizing substances with regard to its viability in direct compression, the SeDeM Diagram Expert System may be considered a new tool in terms of the number of parameters applied and its optimization. The paper is based on the experimental SeDeM characterization study of 51 directly compressible (DC) excipients. After selecting the parameters, and comparing the corresponding results, the choices available within the SeDeM Expert System could be expanded. Through applied variants, the maximum and optimal values of the DC diluent excipient were precisely defined and the mathematical limits of the parameters, functions and parametric indices that define the level of direct compressibility were established. These studies have allowed us to propose a new classification of excipients CD based on its rheological and compressibility capability, resulting in a periodic table of CD excipients. It has been determined that the best excipient for direct compression should have an index of good compression (IGC) of 8.832.

The supply of pasture quantity and quality in areas of native grassland is goal of ranchers. In this study we evaluated the impact of three grazing intensities by beef cattle in an area of unspoilt countryside with improved white clover and red cloveron soil bulk density (Bd), pre-consolidation pressure (sp), compression index (Ci) and the relaxation index (Ri) in a Vertisol derived from basalt. The experiment was conducted in an area of unspoilt countryside with improved white clover and red clover, subjected to three intensities of grazing, located in the experimental field of INIA Glencoe, in the Centre-North of Uruguay (Latitude: 32°41'S and Longitude: 56°16'W). The soil has a depth of 0.92m, clayey silt (0.58kg kg-1 clay) and has granular structure. The intensity of grazing configured the treatments: no grazing (SP), grazing with low load (consisting of grazing animals per hectare from 20 to approximately 385kg of body weight, during 4 days) (PCB) and grazing with high load (40 animals per hectare of approximately 385kg live weight, during 4 days) (PCA). Statistical analysis consisted of comparing averages of Bd, sp, Ci and Ri in the three soil treatments by Student's t test at 5% of significance. PCA caused no increase in relation to the Ds SP nor significant changes ?p and Ic, indicating that the bulk of the organic material provided on the surface of Vertisoil high load bearing capacity, low compaction susceptibility and high elasticity of the soil. The most superficial layer of Ri with respect to subsurface conditioned more resilient deformation, because the PCA were no significant changes in σp and Ic against the SP and PCB.
