INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have applied normative modeling on a single neuroimaging modality to investigate Alzheimer Disease (AD) heterogeneity. We employed a deep learning-based multimodal normative framework to analyze individual-level variation across ATN (amyloid-tau-neurodegeneration) imaging biomarkers. METHODS: We selected cross-sectional discovery (n = 665) and replication cohorts (n = 430) with available T1-weighted MRI, amyloid and tau PET. Normative modeling estimated individual-level abnormal deviations in amyloid-positive individuals compared to amyloid-negative controls. Regional abnormality patterns were mapped at different clinical group levels to assess intra-group heterogeneity. An individual-level disease severity index (DSI) was calculated using both the spatial extent and magnitude of abnormal deviations across ATN. RESULTS: Greater intra-group heterogeneity in ATN abnormality patterns was observed in more severe clinical stages of AD. Higher DSI was associated with worse cognitive function and increased risk of disease progression. DISCUSSION: Subject-specific abnormality maps across ATN reveal the heterogeneous impact of AD on the brain.

PURPOSE: Lymph node metastasis (LNM) is a crucial factor that determines the prognosis of T1 colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. We aimed to develop a practical prediction model for LNM in T1 CRC. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of data from 825 patients with T1 CRC who underwent radical resection at a single center in China. All enrolled patients were randomly divided into a training set and a validation set at a ratio of 7:3 using R software. Risk factors for LNM were identified through multivariate logistic regression analyses. Subsequently, a prediction model was developed using the selected variables. RESULTS: The lymph node metastasis (LNM) rate was 10.1% in the training cohort and 9.3% in the validation cohort. In the training set, risk factors for LNM in T1 CRC were identified, including depressed endoscopic gross appearance, sex, submucosal invasion combined with tumor grade (DSI-TG), lymphovascular invasion (LVI), and tumor budding. LVI emerged as the most potent predictor for LNM. The prediction model based on these factors exhibited good discrimination ability in the validation sets (AUC: 79.3%). Compared to current guidelines, the model could potentially reduce over-surgery by 48.9%. Interestingly, we observed that sex had a differential impact on LNM between early-onset and late-onset CRC patients. CONCLUSIONS: We developed a clinical prediction model for LNM in T1 CRC using five factors that are easily accessible in clinical practice. The model has better predictive performance and practicality than the current guidelines and can assist clinicians in making treatment decisions for T1 CRC patients.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG)-guided radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFTC), using diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) tractography to preoperatively delineate the optic radiation (OR) and reduce the risk of visual field defects (VFDs) where the epileptogenic zones (EZs) are located in or close to the eloquent visual areas. METHODS: We prospectively followed up twenty-four consecutive patients (12 males and 12 females) who underwent SEEG-guided RFTC in or near the OR pathway. A distance of ≥ 3.5 mm away from the OR on the targeted electrodes contacts that exhibited relevant ictal onset patterns, IEDs and EES during SEEG recordings, was required as our selection criterion prior to performing RFTC, enough to theoretically prevent VFDs. Using default tracking parameters, the optic radiation was tracked semi-automatically in DSI-studio. RESULTS: There were 12 male and 12 female patients ranging in age from 6 to 57 years, with follow-up period ranging from 6 to 37 months. Nineteen patients responded to RFTC (R+, 79.16 %), and 5 patients did not benefit from RFTC (R-, 20.83 %). The preoperative application of DSI semi-automatic based OR tractography was successful in the protection of the OR in all 24 patients. Three patients experienced a neurologic deficit following RFTC, and five patients had a partial quadrant visual field deficit prior to surgery that did not worsen, and none of the remaining nineteen patients had a quadrant visual field deficit. CONCLUSION: Our study validates the safety and efficacy of SEEG-RFTC as a viable therapeutic approach for epileptic foci situated in or adjacent to the visual eloquent regions. We demonstrate that DSI-based tractography offers superior precision in delineating the OR compared to DTI. We establish that implementing a criterion of a minimum distance of ≥ 3.5 mm in radius from the OR on the targeted electrode contacts prior to conducting RFTC can effectively mitigate the risk of VFDs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the features of voice disorders associated with novel coronavirus infection and to develop the clinical algorithm for diagnostic and treatment these patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted in patients with dysphonia after COVID-19 (n=60). All patients underwent a comprehensive voice assessment before and after the proposed treatment. The follow-up period was 1 month. RESULTS: Functional dysphonia or aphonia with a stable (refractory) or recurrent course was diagnosed in 58 (97%) patients. A tendency to an increase in the value of the latent period of the P300 and MMN in patients with voice disorder was revealed. There was a significant decrease in supraglottic constriction and glottal insufficiency before and after the treatment. The mean VHI-10 decreased from 25.4 before treatment to 15.3 after treatment. The DSI which is based on the set of voice measurements, statistically significant improved from -5.2 to 2.6 in patients as a result of treatment. The average value of MFI-20 improved from 65.4 (8.7) at the beginning of the study to 20.3 (5.3) after treatment. CONCLUSION: In patients with dysphonia or aphonia associated with COVID-19 are indicated a refractory type of dysphonia. This was indicated by the study of AEPs of the brain. The clinical algorithm for treatment and diagnostic patients with voice disorders after COVID-19 has been developed. The treatment of this group of patients should be adjunct by the drug therapy, kinesiotaping method and psychotherapy.

The association of voice disorders in laryngeal cancers has been studied extensively; however Dysphonia associated with chemo-radiation in non laryngeal Head and Neck cancer (HNC) is a new area of practice in voice clinics. This study thus aimed to evaluate the efficacy of voice rehabilitation among non-laryngeal HNC survivors who were treated with curative RadioTherapy (RT)/Chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in adjunct with or without surgery. This tertiary institutional assessor blinded quasi experimental study after inclusion and exclusion criteria consisted of a study cohort of 128 patients who within 1-3 months of completion of treatment for HNC reported to the laryngology clinic for voice complaints and throat discomfort. All patients underwent documentation of laryngeal endoscopic imaging, acoustics assessment, Aronson's Laryngeal Palpatory Method (LPM) and Voice Handicap Index (VHI). Thereafter they were subjected to Vocal Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) which constituted of Manual circumlaryngeal therapy, SOVTE, and vocal hygiene program. Re-evaluation of the vocal parameters was done at 6 weeks and 3 months from the start of the VRT. All parameters were significantly altered at 6 weeks and 3 months follow-up. Post VRT the videolaryngoscopic findings showed reduction in abnormal supraglottic MTPs with subsequent good approximation of true cords and reduction of involvement of supralaryngeal activities. The Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) impairment levels and VHI scores showed significant improvement from the baseline to both at 6 weeks and 3 months of VRT (p < 0.001). DSI and VHI scores even showed significant improvement between 6 weeks to 3 months of therapy. There was highly significant correlation of VRT with/without surgery, with CRT and in non-smokers at 6 weeks and 3 months of VRT. In non-laryngeal head and neck malignancies, VRT offered as early as within 1-3 months of completion of treatment of HNC ameliorates surgical and chemo-radiation induced Muscle Tension Dysphonia.

Perilla frutescens leaves are hypothesized to possess antioxidant and amyloid-ß (Aß) aggregation inhibitory properties primarily due to their polyphenol-type compounds. While these bioactivities fluctuate daily, the traditional methods for quantifying constituent contents and functional properties are both laborious and impractical for immediate field assessments. To address this limitation, the present study introduces an expedient approach for on-site analysis, employing fluorescence spectra obtained through excitation light irradiation of perilla leaves. Standard analytical techniques were employed to evaluate various constituent contents (chlorophyl (Chl), total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and rosmarinic acid (RA)) and functional attributes (DPPH radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), and Aß aggregation inhibitory activity). Correlations between the fluorescence spectra and these parameters were examined using normalized difference spectral index (NDSI), ratio spectral index (RSI), and difference spectral index (DSI) analyses. The resulting predictive model exhibited a high coefficient of determination, with R2 values equal to or greater than 0.57 for constituent contents and 0.49 for functional properties. This approach facilitates the convenient, simultaneous, and nondestructive monitoring of both the chemical constituents and the functional capabilities of perilla leaves, thereby simplifying the determination of optimal harvest times. The model derived from this method holds promise for real-time assessments, indicating its potential for the simultaneous evaluation of both constituents and functionalities in perilla leaves.

The finding of minimal laryngeal dysfunctions in professional voice users is essential to prevent the onset of organic vocal pathologies. The purpose of this study is to identify an objective parameter that supports the phoniatric evaluation in detecting minimal laryngeal dysfunctions in singers. 54 professional and non-professional singers have been evaluated with laryngostroboscopy, Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP), Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI), maximum phonation time (TMF), minimum intensity of sound emission (I-min), maximum frequency (F-max), voice handicap index (VHI), singing voice handicap index (SVHI), manual phonogram and audiometric examination. The SVHI of all the "healthy" singers was on average 23.7 ± 22.5, while that of the "dysfunctional" 20.9 ± 18. No statistically significant difference was found between the SVHI scores of the total of healthy singers compared to the scores of the dysfunctional ones on the VSL (p = 0.6). The between-group comparison of the means of individual parameter values of DSI, TMF, F-max, Jitter, Shimmer, NHR, and SPI was not statistically significant (respectively p = 0.315, 0.2, 0.18, 0.09, 0.2, 0.08, 0.3). The only parameter analyzed that was statistically significant was the I-min (p < 0.05). SVHI is a valid instrument for the evaluation after a therapy but in our experience, it is not useful in distinguishing healthy from dysfunctional patients. The minimum intensity of sound emission measured with the sound level meter (I-low2) resulted a reliable parameter to identify minimal laryngeal dysfunctions and a useful tool in supporting the phoniatric diagnostic-therapeutic process in singers.

It's very important to demarcate that voice is the production of sound by the larynx while speech is articulation of the produced sound by tongue movements, soft palate and the lips. Mucositis, dysphagia, change in speech and voice are the common sequelae of Radiotherapy (RT) alone or in combination with chemotherapy (CRT) which is commonly used in the treatment of head and neck cancer (HNC). The aim of this study was to investigate the patient-reported voice impairment among non laryngeal head and neck cancer survivors who were treated with curative RT/CRT with or without surgery. This tertiary institutional assessor blinded study consists of a study cohort of 128 patients who after of completion of treatment for HNC reported to the laryngology clinic for voice complaints and throat discomfort. The assessment included laryngeal endoscopic and stroboscopic imaging, acoustics assessment and VHI (Vocal handicap index). This study cohort consisted of 89.8% males and 11.2% females. There was hyperadduction and strain of ventricular bands in almost all the cases. There was hyperactivity and compression of both true and false cords in 80.5% of the cases. DSI impairment level showed significant association with gender, VHI, GRBAS score and RT/CRT and it did not show significant association with smoking and surgery, while VHI showed significant association with DSI and RT/CRT and it did not show significant association with gender, smoking and surgery. Muscle tension is a very common effect of RT/RCT and dysphonia can be easily associated with it. Future research needs to focus on specific voice treatment regimens in HNC treated with RT/CRT to improve the quality of life of these patients.

The effects of variations in the heat treatment process of milk on its quality and flavor are inevitable. This study investigated the effect of direct steam injection and instantaneous ultra-high-temperature (DSI-IUHT, 143 °C, 1-2 s) sterilization on the physicochemical properties, whey protein denaturation (WPD) rate, and volatile compounds (VCs) of milk. The experiment compared raw milk as a control with high-temperature short-time (HTST, 75 °C 15 s and 85 °C 15 s) pasteurization and indirect ultra-high-temperature (IND-UHT, 143 °C, 3-4 s) sterilization. The results showed no significant differences (p > 0.05) in physical stability between milk samples with different heat treatments. The DSI-IUHT and IND-UHT milks presented smaller particle sizes (p < 0.05) and more concentrated distributions than the HTST milk. The apparent viscosity of the DSI-IUHT milk was significantly higher than the other samples (p < 0.05) and is consistent with the microrheological results. The WPD of DSI-IUHT milk was 27.52% lower than that of IND-UHT milk. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and solvent-assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE) were combined with the WPD rates to analyze the VCs, which were positively correlated with ketones, acids, and esters and negatively associated with alcohols, heterocycles, sulfur, and aldehydes. The DSI-IUHT samples exhibited a higher similarity to raw and HTST milk than the IND-UHT samples. In summary, DSI-IUHT was more successful in preserving the milk's quality due to its milder sterilization conditions compared to IND-UHT. This study provides excellent reference data for the application of DSI-IUHT treatment in milk processing.

RESUMEN

E3 ubiquitin ligases (E3s) and deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) play key roles in protein degradation. However, a large number of E3 substrate interactions (ESIs) and DUB substrate interactions (DSIs) remain elusive. Here, we present DeepUSI, a deep learning-based framework to identify ESIs and DSIs using the rich information present in protein sequences. Utilizing the collected golden standard dataset, key hyperparameters in the process of model training, including the ones relevant to data sampling and number of epochs, have been systematically assessed. The performance of DeepUSI was thoroughly evaluated by multiple metrics, based on internal and external validation. Application of DeepUSI to cancer-associated E3 and DUB genes identified a list of druggable substrates with functional implications, warranting further investigation. Together, DeepUSI presents a new framework for predicting substrates of E3 ubiquitin ligases and deubiquitinates.

INTRODUCTION: The optimal combination of radiotherapy and breast reconstruction has not yet been defined. Post-mastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) has deleterious effects on breast reconstruction, leading to caution amongst surgeons. Pre-operative radiotherapy (PRT) is a growing area of interest, is demonstrated to be safe, and spares autologous flaps from radiotherapy. This study evaluates the aesthetic outcome of PRT and deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap reconstruction within the Pre-operative Radiotherapy And Deep Inferior Epigastric artery Perforator (DIEP) flAp (PRADA) cohort. METHODS: PRADA was an observational cohort study designed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of PRT for women undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy and DIEP reconstruction. Panel evaluation of 3D surface images (3D-SIs) and patient-reported outcome measures (BREAST-Q) for a subset of women in the study were compared with those of a DIEP-PMRT cohort who had undergone DIEP reconstruction and PMRT. RESULTS: Seventeen out of 33 women from the PRADA study participated in this planned substudy. Twenty-eight women formed the DIEP-PMRT cohort (median follow-up 23 months). The median (inter-quartile range [IQR]) 'satisfaction with breasts' score at 12 months for the PRADA cohort was significantly better than the DIEP-PMRT cohort (77 [72-87] versus 64 [54-71], respectively), p=0.01). Median [IQR] panel evaluation (5-point scale) was also significantly better for the PRADA cohort than for the DIEP-PMRT cohort (4.3 [3.9-4.6] versus 3.6 [2.8-4] p=0.003). CONCLUSIONS: Aesthetic outcome for the PRADA cohort was reported to be 'good' or 'excellent' in 93% of cases using a bespoke panel assessment with robust methodology. Patient satisfaction at one year is encouraging and superior to DIEP-PMRT at 23 months. Switching surgery-radiotherapy sequencing leads to similar breast aesthetic outcomes and warrants further large-scale, multi-centre evaluation in a randomised trial.

Regardless of their nature of stochasticity and uncertain nature, wind and solar resources are the most abundant energy resources used in the development of microgrid systems. In microgrid systems and distribution networks, the uncertain nature of both solar and wind resources results in power quality and system stability issues. The randomization behavior of solar and wind energy resources is controlled through the precise development of a power prediction model. Fuzzy-based solar PV and wind prediction models may more efficiently manage this randomness and uncertain character. However, this method has several drawbacks, it has limited performance when the volumes of wind and solar resources historical data are huge in size and it has also many membership functions of the fuzzy input and output variables as well as multiple fuzzy rules available. The hybrid Fuzzy-PSO intelligent prediction approach improves the fuzzy system's limitations and hence increases the prediction model's performance. The Fuzzy-PSO hybrid forecast model is developed using MATLAB programming of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm with the help of the global optimization toolbox. In this paper, an error correction factor (ECF) is considered a new fuzzy input variable. It depends on the validation and forecasted data values of both wind and solar prediction models to improve the accuracy of the prediction model. The impact of ECF is observed in fuzzy, Fuzzy-PSO, and Fuzzy-GA wind and solar PV power forecasting models. The hybrid Fuzzy-PSO prediction model of wind and solar power generation has a high degree of accuracy compared to the Fuzzy and Fuzzy-GA forecasting models. The rest of this paper is organized as: Section II is about the analysis of solar and wind resources row data. The Fuzzy-PSO prediction model problem formulation is covered in Section III. Section IV, is about the results and discussion of the study. Section V contains the conclusion. The references and abbreviations are presented at the end of the paper.

Electrophysiological technique is an efficient tool for investigating the synaptic regulatory effects mediated by the endocannabinoid system. Stimulation of presynaptic type 1 cannabinoid receptor (CB1) is the principal mode by which endocannabinoids suppress transmitter release in the central nervous system, but a non-retrograde manner of functioning and other receptors have also been described. Endocannabinoids are key modulators of both short- and long-term plasticity. Here, we discuss ex vivo electrophysiological approaches to examine synaptic signaling induced by cannabinoid and endocannabinoid molecules in the mammalian brain.

INTRODUCTION: Suicidal thoughts are relatively common among college students in Iran. However, measures frequently used to assess suicidality or specific aspects of suicidal ideation in the United States have yet to be validated in Iran. Thus, the present study validated Farsi versions of the Depressive Symptom Inventory Suicidality Subscale (F-DSI-SS) and Suicide Rumination Scale (F-SRS) among Iranian college students. METHODS: College students (N = 1043; 88.1% women) completed the F-DSI-SS. Forty-six percent (n = 481) of participants reported the presence of suicidal thoughts and were eligible to fill out the F-SRS. Analyses focused on validating the factor structure, construct, and convergent validity of the F-DSI-SS and F-SRS among college students, as well as testing measurement invariance by gender of the F-DSI-SS. RESULTS: Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) indicated that the F-DSI-SS and F-SRS had good fit to the data and each displayed a one-factor structure. Furthermore, the F-DSI-SS showed strong measurement invariance across genders. Internal consistency of the F-DSI-SS and F-SRS was good. Lastly, the F-DSI-SS and F-SRS's items and their total scores were intercorrelated and demonstrated good convergent validity. CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that the F-DSI-SS and F-SRS will enable researchers to examine suicidal thoughts and suicide-specific rumination in Iran.

The study aimed to investigate and compare the accuracy and robustness of the multiparametric acoustic voice indices (MAVIs), namely the Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI), Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI), Acoustic Breathiness Index (ABI), and Voice Wellness Index (VWI) measures in differentiating normal and dysphonic voices. The study group consisted of 129 adult individuals including 49 with normal voices and 80 patients with pathological voices. The diagnostic accuracy of the investigated MAVI in differentiating between normal and pathological voices was assessed using receiver operating characteristics (ROC). Moderate to strong positive linear correlations were observed between different MAVIs. The ROC statistical analysis revealed that all used measurements manifested in a high level of accuracy (area under the curve (AUC) of 0.80 and greater) and an acceptable level of sensitivity and specificity in discriminating between normal and pathological voices. However, with AUC 0.99, the VWI demonstrated the highest diagnostic accuracy. The highest Youden index equaled 0.93, revealing that a VWI cut-off of 4.45 corresponds with highly acceptable sensitivity (97.50%) and specificity (95.92%). In conclusion, the VWI was found to be beneficial in describing differences in voice quality status and discriminating between normal and dysphonic voices based on clinical diagnosis, i.e., dysphonia type, implying the VWI's reliable voice screening potential.

RESUMEN

Fair and equitable benefit sharing of genetic resources is an expectation of the Nagoya Protocol. Although the Nagoya Protocol does not yet formally apply to Digital Sequence Information ("DSI"), discussions are currently underway regarding to include such data through ongoing Convention on Biological Diversity ("CBD") negotiations. While Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities ("IPLC") expect the value generated from genomic data to be subject to benefit sharing arrangements, a range of views are currently being expressed by Nation States, IPLC and other stakeholders. The use of DSI gives rise to unique considerations, creating a gray area as to how it should be considered under the Nagoya Protocol's Access and Benefit Sharing ("ABS") principles. One way for benefit sharing to be enhanced is through the connection of data to proper provenance information. A significant development is the use of digital labeling systems to ensure that the origin of samples is appropriately disclosed. The Traditional Knowledge and Biocultural Labels initiative offers a practical option for data provided to genomic databases. In particular, the BioCultural Labels ("BC Labels") are a mechanism for Indigenous communities to identify and maintain provenance, origin and authority over biocultural material and data generated from Indigenous land and waters held in research, cultural institutions and data repositories. This form of cultural metadata adds value to the research endeavor and the creation of Indigenous fields within databases adds transparency and accountability to the research environment.

Introduction: The relationship between sensory impairments and the risk of dementia is inconclusive. We aim to investigate the association of visual impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI), and dual sensory impairment (DSI) with incident dementia. Methods: The UK Biobank study recruited more than 500,000 participants aged 40-69 years across the United Kingdom. Participants with available visual acuity (VA) measurements and speech-reception-threshold (SRT) information and free of dementia at the baseline assessment were included in the analysis. VI was defined as VA worse than 0.3 LogMAR units and HI were defined as an SRT of -5.5 dB or over. DSI was defined as the presence of both VI and HI. Incident dementia was identified through linked data to primary care or hospital admission records and death registries. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to examine the association of VI, HI, and DSI with incident dementia. Results: Among 113,511 participants (mean age: 56.8 ± 8.09 years, female: 54.4%), a total number of 1,135 (1.00%) cases of incident dementia were identified during a median follow up period of 11.1 years [interquartile range (IQR): 10.9-11.4 years]. The incidence of dementia showed significant differences among the non-sensory impairment (NSI) group, VI-only group, HI-only group, and DSI group (p < 0.001). After adjusting for demographic, lifestyle, health, and genetic factors, isolated VI (HR = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.06-2.12, p = 0.023), isolated HI (HR = 1.42, 95% CI:1.20-1.69, p < 0.001), and DSI (HR = 1.82, 95% CI: 1.10-3.00, p = 0.020) were independently associated with higher risks of incident dementia. Conclusions: Visual, hearing, and dual sensory impairments were associated with an increased risk of developing dementia, suggesting that visual and hearing impairments are modifiable risk factors that can be targeted to prevent dementia.

For understanding the significance of tidal pumping for driving submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), two time series observations were conducted over tidal cycles in typical mariculture areas of Sanmen Bay, China. Based on 224Ra and dissolved silicon (DSi), the tide-driven SGD fluxes showed significant negative correlations with tidal height, and were 16.4 ± 5.6 cm d-1 and 21.7 ± 13.9 cm d-1 at two coastal sites of the Sanmen Bay, highlighting the potential of DSi in SGD calculation when coastal waters are on short time scales. Furthermore, nutrient fluxes through tidally influenced SGD were estimated to be 11.5-26.5 mmol m-2 d-1 for dissolved inorganic nitrogen, 0.06-0.34 mmol m-2 d-1 for dissolved inorganic phosphorus and 11.5-32.1 mmol m-2 d-1 for DSi, which were higher than those from surface loadings, revealing that tide-driven SGD with large amounts of nutrient and high N:P ratios may significantly contribute to the development of marine aquaculture.

Androdioecy is a rare reproductive system. Fraxinus platypoda, a woody canopy species in Japan's mountainous riparian zones, is described as a morphologically androdioecious species. In this study, we tried to detect whether F. platypoda is also functionally androdioecious. We analyzed its sexual expression, seed development, pollen morphology and germination ability, pollination systems, and mast flowering behavior. We found that the hermaphrodite trees are andromonoecious, with inflorescences bearing male and hermaphroditic flowers, whereas male individuals had only male flowers. Pollen morphology was identical in male flowers, in hermaphrodite flowers of an andromonoecious individual, and in male flowers of male individuals. Pollen from both types of individuals was capable of germination both ex vivo (on nutrient medium) and in vivo in pollination experiments. However, compared with pollen from andromonoecious trees, pollen from male trees showed a higher germination rate. The self-pollination rate of bagged hermaphroditic flowers was almost zero. The fruit set rate following cross-pollination with male pollen from a male tree was higher than that following natural pollination, whereas the rate with hermaphroditic pollen was the same. The flowering and fruiting of F. platypoda have fluctuated over 17 years; the flowering of the two types of sexual individuals exhibited clear synchronization during this period. The frequency of male individuals within the populations is 50%. The maintenance of such a proportion of males in populations of the self-incompatible F. platypoda is either indicative of a true androdioecious species with a diallelic self-incompatibility system or a cryptic-dioecious species.
