RESUMEN

Cyanide is very poisonous and raises environmental problems because of its industrial application and potential as a terrorist weapon. Given CN's toxicity and possible hazard to people, an effective and adaptive detection approach is needed. This specification suggests using a PCF to build a terahertz Hexagonal Core and Curved rectangular air holes sensor to detect NaCN and KCN. The recently created PCF analysis, which was promptly delivered, reveals an RS concentration of 99.62 % for NaCN and a maximum concentration of KCN is 99.08 %. In addition, we analyzed the Confinement Loss (CL) at a value of 5.88 × 10-09 dB/m and 2.07 × 10-05 dB/m, as well as EML at values of 0.0020 cm-1 and 0.0026 cm-1, accordingly, about these hazardous substances. The designed detector can identify NaCN and KCN at low concentrations even with small RI shifts due to its high sensitivity. Real-time NaCN and KCN detection and monitoring through nerve reflexes is essential for life-threatening conditions. It can selectively work in NaCN and KCN, ensuring accurate detection even in complex chemical compositions. Additionally, its tiny size allows for emergency use.

Galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) is an unavoidable risk to astronauts that may affect mission success. Male rodents exposed to 33-beam-GCR (33-GCR) show short-term cognitive deficits but reports on female rodents and long-term assessment are lacking. We asked: What are the longitudinal behavioral effects of 33-GCR on female mice? Also, can an antioxidant/anti-inflammatory compound (CDDO-EA) mitigate the impact of 33-GCR? Mature (6-month-old) C57BL/6J female mice received CDDO-EA (400 µg/g of food) or a control diet (vehicle, Veh) for 5 days and Sham-irradiation (IRR) or whole-body 33-GCR (0.75Gy) on the 4th day. Three-months post-IRR, mice underwent two touchscreen-platform tests: (1) location discrimination reversal (tests behavior pattern separation and cognitive flexibility, abilities reliant on the dentate gyrus) and (2) stimulus-response learning/extinction. Mice then underwent arena-based behavior tests (e.g. open field, 3-chamber social interaction). At the experiment's end (14.25-month post-IRR), an index relevant to neurogenesis was quantified (doublecortin-immunoreactive [DCX+] dentate gyrus immature neurons). Female mice exposed to Veh/Sham vs. Veh/33-GCR had similar pattern separation (% correct to 1st reversal). There were two effects of diet: CDDO-EA/Sham and CDDO-EA/33-GCR mice had better pattern separation vs. their respective control groups (Veh/Sham, Veh/33-GCR), and CDDO-EA/33-GCR mice had better cognitive flexibility (reversal number) vs. Veh/33-GCR mice. One radiation effect/CDDO-EA countereffect also emerged: Veh/33-GCR mice had slower stimulus-response learning (days to completion) vs. all other groups, including CDDO-EA/33-GCR mice. In general, all mice showed normal anxiety-like behavior, exploration, and habituation to novel environments. There was also a change relevant to neurogenesis: Veh/33-GCR mice had fewer DCX+ dentate gyrus immature neurons vs. Veh/Sham mice. Our study implies space radiation is a risk to a female crew's longitudinal mission-relevant cognitive processes and CDDO-EA is a potential dietary countermeasure for space-radiation CNS risks.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of electroacupuncture (EA) at "Baihui" (GV 20) and "Sishencong" (EX-HN 1) on the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/tyrosine kinase receptor B (TrkB) pathway, synaptophysin (SYN), and the levels of interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and interleukin-18 (IL-18) in the hippocampus of the ischemic side in rats with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI), and to explore the effects and action mechanism of EA on post-CIRI learning-memory function. METHODS: Forty-eight SPF-grade male SD rats were randomly divided into a sham operation group, a model group, an EA group, and a non-acupoint group, with 12 rats in each group. The CIRI model was established in the model group, the EA group, and the non-acupoint group using the modified ZeaLonga suture method. The rats in the EA group were treated with EA at "Sishencong" (EX-HN 1) and "Baihui" (GV 20), with disperse-dense wave at frequency of 2 Hz/10 Hz and intensity of 1 mA. The rats in the non-acupoint group were treated with EA at non-meridian and non-acupoint points under the ribs bilaterally with the same parameters as the EA group. EA were conducted for 30 min each session, once daily, for 7 days. During the intervention, body weight was measured daily at a fixed time, and neurological deficits were assessed on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th days into intervention. Brain infarct volume was measured using small animal magnetic resonance imaging before and after the intervention. After the intervention, learning-memory function were evaluated using the Morris water maze. Hippocampal morphology was observed with HE staining. The positive expression of SYN in the hippocampus of the ischemic side was detected by immunohistochemistry. BDNF, TrkB, and SYN protein expressions in the hippocampus of the ischemic side were detected by Western blot. IL-1ß and IL-18 levels in the hippocampus of the ischemic side were measured by ELISA. RESULTS: From the 2nd to the 7th day into intervention, compared with the sham operation group, the body weight of rats in the model group was decreased (P<0.01); compared with the model group and the non-acupoint group, the body weight of rats in the EA group was increased (P<0.01). On the 1st day into intervention, compared with the sham operation group, neurological function scores of rats in the model group, the EA group, and the non-acupoint group were increased (P<0.01); on the 3rd and 7th days into intervention, neurological function scores of rats in the model group were higher than those in the sham operation group (P<0.01); on the 7th day, neurological function scores of rats in the EA group were lower than those in the model group and the non-acupoint group (P<0.05). Compared with the sham operation group, escape latency was prolonged (P<0.05), and the number of platform crossings was decreased (P<0.01) in the model group; compared with the model group and the non-acupoint group, escape latency was shortened (P<0.05), and the number of platform crossings was increased (P<0.01) in the EA group. Before intervention, the high signal infarcts were observed in the left ventricles of rats in the model group, the EA group, and the non-acupoint group; after intervention compared with the model group and the non-acupoint group, infarct volume in the EA group was decreased (P<0.01). Neuronal cells in the model group and the non-acupoint group were sparsely and disorderedly arranged, with deep-stained cytoplasm and shrunken nuclei; the number and arrangement of neuronal cells in the EA group were similar to the sham operation group, with less deep-stained cytoplasm and shrunken nuclei compared to the model group. Compared with the sham operation group, the positive expression of SYN, and BDNF TrkB, and SYN protein expressions in the hippocampus of the ischemic side were decreased (P<0.01, P<0.05), while levels of IL-1ß and IL-18 were increased (P<0.01) in the model group; compared with the model group and the non-acupoint group, the positive expression of SYN, and BDNF, TrkB and SYN protein expressions in the hippocampus of the ischemic side were increased (P<0.01, P<0.05), while levels of IL-1ß and IL-18 were decreased (P<0.01) in the EA group. CONCLUSION: EA at "Baihui" (GV 20) and "Sishencong" (EX-HN 1) may improve learning-memory function in rats with CIRI by activating the BDNF/TrkB signaling pathway, reducing neuroinflammatory response, and promoting the recovery of synaptic plasticity.

By using the method of high-temperature solid-phase reaction, the new piezoceramic SrBi2Nb2-2xWxSnxO9 was obtained, where partial substitution of niobium (Nb) atoms with Sn4+ and W6+ atoms in the compound SrBi2Nb2O9 occurred in the octahedra of the perovskite layer (B-position). X-ray diffraction investigations showed that these compounds are single-phase SrBi2Nb2-2xWxSnxO9 (x = 0.1, 0.2) and two-phase SrBi2Nb2-2xWxSnxO9 (x = 0.3, 0.4), but all of them had the structure of Aurivillius-Smolensky phases (ASPs) with close parameters of orthorhombic unit cells. It corresponded to the space group A21am. The temperature dependences of the relative permittivity ε/ε0 and the tangent of the dielectric loss angle tan d were defined at various frequencies. It was found that doping SrBi2Nb2-2xWxSnxO9 (x = 0.1) improved the electrophysical properties of the compound: losses decreased, and the relative permittivity increased. This result was obtained for the first time. Moreover, a new result was obtained that indicated an improvement in the electrophysical properties of SrBi2Nb2O9 using the chemical element Sn (tin). This refutes the previously existing opinion about the impossibility to use Sn as a doping element.

Electro-acupuncture (EA) is identified as an effective therapeutic method for cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury (CIRI), which is a combination of Chinese traditional acupuncture and modern electro-therapy. However, the downstream molecular mechanisms of EA in CIRI process remains largely unknown. The purpose of the present study is to unveil the therapeutic effect of EA on CIRI rat and its regulatory mechanisms. At first, we constructed middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) rat models and then treated them with EA to observe the pathological changes. The results indicated that EA decreased the infarct volume (43.81 ± 3.34 vs 15.96 ± 2.22) and the neurological scores (3.33 ± 0.52 vs 1.67 ± 0.52) and suppressed the apoptosis in MCAO model rats. For ferroptosis analysis, EA decreased the Fe2 + (0.08 ± 0.01 vs 0.06 ± 0.01), MDA (36.61 ± 4.29 vs 21.72 ± 2.79), and LPS (5.25 ± 0.69 vs 2.89 ± 0.42) contents and increased the GSH (4.94 ± 1.04 vs 11.69 ± 1.88) content in MCAO model rats. We next detected whether succinylation mediated EA-treated I/R injury. According to immunoprecipitation and western blot analysis, EA treatment could lower both levels of succinylation and KAT3B in MCAO rats. Moreover, mechanism experiments unveiled that KAT3B promoted the succinylation of the ferroptosis-related protein ACSL4 at K661 site and thus stabilizing ACSL4. Finally, EA-treated MCAO rats were further injected with KAT3B expression vector. The results showed that KAT3B overexpression increased the infarct volume (31.44 ± 3.92 vs 7.94 ± 2.84) and the neurological scores (2.67 ± 0.51 vs 1.33 ± 0.51) and promoted the apoptosis in EA treated MCAO model rats. For ferroptosis analysis, KAT3B overexpression increased the Fe2 + (0.08 ± 0.01 vs 0.05 ± 0.01), MDA (29.24 ± 4.30 vs 22.06 ± 1.89), and LPO (5.07 ± 0.45 vs 2.88 ± 0.49) contents and decreased the GSH (7.86 ± 1.09 vs 11.06 ± 1.76) content in EA treated MCAO model rats. Collectively, our study demonstrates that EA plays a therapeutic role in CIRI through suppressing KAT3B-induced stabilization of ACSL4 to inhibit ferroptosis. These findings contribute to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the neuroprotective effects of EA and open new avenues for the development of innovative therapeutic strategies for CIRI.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous studies suggest that titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) induce liver injury, possibly due to oxidative stress and inflammation. Ellagic acid (EA) is a dietary polyphenol extracted from natural sources and possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Nonetheless, the efficacy of EA in mitigating liver injury induced by TiO2 NPs remains to be elucidated. METHODS: Primary hepatocytes and L02 cells were cultured with 45 µM EA and 10 µg/ml TiO2 NPs. Mice were orally administered TiO2 NPs (150 mg kg-1) and EA (25/50/100 mg kg-1) for eight weeks. sulforaphane (SFN) as a positive control to evaluate the inhibitory effect of EA on TiO2 NP-induced liver injury (SFN 10 mg kg-1). RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was employed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying oxidative stress, inflammation, and liver fibrosis. RESULTS: We assessed the impact of EA on cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation, and fibrosis in both cells and mice exposed to TiO2 NPs for an extended period. Our findings indicated that EA had a protective effect on TiO2 NP-exposed hepatocytes, reducing cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Furthermore, EA treatment markedly reduced serum aminotransferase levels in mice exposed to TiO2 NPs. Furthermore, EA treatment notably reduced hepatic stress response, inflammation, and fibrosis in mice. The treatment of EA demonstrates non-inferiority compared to SFN. The protective effects of EA were attributed to the upregulation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), EA promoted the translocation and phosphorylation of Nrf2, as indicated by the finding that Nfe2l2 shRNA and inhibition of Nrf2 by ML385 reversed the EA-induced hepatoprotective effects in TiO2 NP-exposed hepatocytes and mice. CONCLUSION: EA significantly mitigated liver injury induced by TiO2 NPs. Importantly, we identified that the nuclear translocation and phosphorylation of Nrf2 are the primary mechanisms through which EA alleviates liver injury resulting from exposure to TiO2 NPs. As a natural activator of Nrf2, EA emerges as a promising therapeutic candidate for treating TiO2 NPs-induced liver injury, further enhancing our understanding of its potential as a hepatoprotective agent and its underlying molecular mechanisms.

Thus, cognitive computational neuroscience - the study of neural computations over neural representations - must be an embodied research program.

Managing invasive species is crucial to mitigate their negative impacts on ecosystems, yet conflicts may arise when their social benefits are disregarded. Human pressure on the endemic-rich forests of São Tomé has been high since the island was discovered by the Portuguese in the 15th century, and numerous species have been introduced. These include the invasive West African giant land snail (Archachatina marginata), which was introduced in the mid-20th century, is now widespread on the island, and is a potential threat to native flora and fauna. We assessed the frequency of consumption of this species and its socioeconomic importance to people across the island with household questionnaires, focus group discussions, and semistructured interviews. We explored the prevalence and potential drivers of use (e.g., wealth, household composition, and diversity of occupations) and characterized the commodity chain to identify demographic groups linked to the snail trade. We interviewed 672 people (1 person per household), conducted 6 focus groups, and interviewed 80 key actors belonging to 5 subcategories. The snail was the most widely consumed bushmeat and an important source of income, particularly for women and unemployed youth. Insecure and scarce livelihood alternatives, mostly in rural areas, were reported as drivers for trade involvement. Snail harvesting was more frequent in poorer households with low occupational diversity. Selling tended to occur in households that were well-established in the community and had a higher proportion of children. Both were stimulated by the proximity of communities to the native forest. Buying snails was common in all demographic groups, but it was linked to wealth and occupational diversity. Interventions to manage the impact of this introduced species on the valuable ecosystems of the island should involve multiple sectors of society to ensure societal support. This requires robust consideration of the welfare of vulnerable demographic groups that benefit from the species.


Importancia socioeconómica y comercial de un caracol invasor en la isla rica en endemismos de Santo Tomé, África Central Resumen La gestión de las especies invasoras es crucial para mitigar sus efectos negativos en los ecosistemas, aunque pueden surgir conflictos cuando no se tienen en cuenta sus beneficios sociales. La presión humana sobre los bosques de Santo Tomé, ricos en endemismos, ha sido alta desde que la isla fue colonizada por los portugueses en el siglo XV y desde entonces se han introducido numerosas especies. Una de ellas es el caracol terrestre gigante de África Occidental (Archachatina marginata), introducido a mediados del siglo XX y que ahora tiene una distribución amplia en la isla y es una amenaza potencial para la flora y la fauna autóctonas al ser invasor. Evaluamos la frecuencia de consumo de esta especie y su importancia socioeconómica para la población de toda la isla mediante encuestas en hogares, grupos de discusión y entrevistas semiestructuradas a actores clave de cinco categorías. Exploramos la prevalencia y los posibles factores impulsores del consumo (por ejemplo, la riqueza, la composición de los hogares y la diversidad de ocupaciones) y caracterizamos la cadena comercial para identificar los grupos demográficos vinculados al comercio de caracoles. Entrevistamos a 672 personas (una persona por hogar), realizamos seis grupos de discusión y entrevistamos a 80 actores clave. El caracol fue la carne de caza más consumida y una importante fuente de ingresos, sobre todo para las mujeres y los jóvenes desempleados. La inseguridad y la escasez de medios de subsistencia, sobre todo en las zonas rurales, fueron los factores que impulsaron la participación en el mercado. La colecta de caracoles fue más frecuente en los hogares más pobres y con escasa diversidad ocupacional. La venta tendía a producirse en hogares bien establecidos en la comunidad y con una mayor proporción de niños. Ambos factores se vieron estimulados por la proximidad de las comunidades al bosque nativo. La compra de caracoles fue común en todos los grupos demográficos, pero estuvo vinculada a la riqueza y a la diversidad ocupacional. Las intervenciones para gestionar el impacto de esta especie introducida en los valiosos ecosistemas de la isla deben implicar a múltiples sectores de la sociedad para garantizar su apoyo. Para ello es necesario tener muy en cuenta el bienestar de los grupos demográficos vulnerables que se benefician de la especie.

Background: The preoperative predictors of residual or recurrent tricuspid regurgitation (TR) after cone reconstruction (CR) remains unclear in patients with Ebstein anomaly (EA). We aimed to determine the predictive value of right ventricular longitudinal strain, assessed using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging, for residual or recurrent TR after CR in patients with EA. Methods: This single-centre, retrospective study analysed data from 48 patients with EA [mean ± standard deviation (SD), age, 35.0±13.6 years; 13 males] who underwent CMR before CR between January 2017 and February 2023. Two-dimensional colour Doppler echocardiography was performed before CR and mid-term (>6 months) after CR to evaluate the degree of TR in patients with EA. Thirty healthy volunteers served as controls. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify CMR predictors of moderate or severe TR >6 months after CR. Results: Mid-term postoperative results revealed severe, moderate, and mild TR in 8 (17%), 7 (15%), and 33 (69%) patients, respectively. For patients with EA and moderate or severe TR after CR, left ventricular global longitudinal strain (GLS), left ventricular ejection fraction, right ventricular global longitudinal strain (RVGLS), and right ventricular ejection fraction (RVEF) were significantly worse compared to patients with mild TR (all P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that RVGLS was independently associated with moderate or severe TR >6 months after CR [odds ratio (OR) 1.193, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.025-1.388; P=0.02]. Conclusions: RVGLS was a significant predictor of moderate or severe TR >6 months after CR. This finding emphasizes that early and accurate measurement of RV function may help to identify patients at high risk for severe residual or recurrent TR.

C. G. Jung wrote very little about psychedelic drugs and he took a sceptical view of them. However, he was sufficiently impressed by Aldous Huxley's 1954 account of taking mescaline, The Doors of Perception, to invite Huxley to visit him in Switzerland. Huxley declined Jung's invitation but Huxley's collaborator Humphry Osmond met Jung instead. This paper documents Jung's contact with the British pioneers of psychedelics research and presents the scant material illuminating his views about these drugs. It also determines the efforts of British psychiatrist Ronald Sandison, who was the first to develop an "explicitly Jungian approach" to psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (Hill, 2013), and it highlights a connection between Sandison's initiative and the Society of Analytical Psychology (SAP) through the involvement of two SAP members: Margot Cutner, Sandison's colleague, and Michael Fordham, who supervised a trainee working with one of Sandison's former patients. Despite Jung's objections to the use of psychedelics, Sandison and Cutner developed ground-breaking protocols during the 1950s and they were among the first to document the phenomenon of "spiritual rebirth symbolized in the birth experience known to many LSD therapists" (Sandison, 2001). In two companion papers, I consider Jung's treatment of the rebirth motif in his commentary on The Tibetan Book of the Dead, which later became a central text in the psychedelic movement, and I chart the evolution in psychedelics research from an association with schizophrenia during the 1950s to the mystical paradigms of the 1960s and beyond.

Sin embargo, quedó lo suficientemente impresionado por el relato, Las Puertas de la Percepción, que Aldous Huxley hizo en 1954 en referencia a su consumo de mescalina, como para invitar a Huxley a visitarle en Suiza. Huxley declinó la invitación, pero en su lugar Jung se reunió con Humphry Osmond, colaborador de Huxley. Introduction: The integration of self-attention mechanisms into Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) has garnered considerable interest in the realm of advanced deep learning, primarily due to their biological properties. Recent advancements in SNN architecture, such as Spikformer, have demonstrated promising outcomes. However, we observe that Spikformer may exhibit excessive energy consumption, potentially attributable to redundant channels and blocks. Methods: To mitigate this issue, we propose a one-shot Spiking Transformer Architecture Search method, namely Auto-Spikformer. Auto-Spikformer extends the search space to include both transformer architecture and SNN inner parameters. We train and search the supernet based on weight entanglement, evolutionary search, and the proposed Discrete Spiking Parameters Search (DSPS) methods. Benefiting from these methods, the performance of subnets with weights inherited from the supernet without even retraining is comparable to the original Spikformer. Moreover, we propose a new fitness function aiming to find a Pareto optimal combination balancing energy consumption and accuracy. Results and discussion: Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of Auto-Spikformer, which outperforms the original Spikformer and most CNN or ViT models with even fewer parameters and lower energy consumption.

Mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) doped with therapeutical ions present multifunctional systems that enable a synergistic outcome through the dual delivery of drugs and ions. The aim of this study was to evaluate influence of co-doping with strontium and magnesium ions (SrMg-MBGNs) on the properties of MBGNs. A modified microemulsion-assisted sol-gel synthesis was used to obtain particles, and their physicochemical properties, bioactivity, and drug-loading/release ability were evaluated. Indirect biological assays using 2D and 3D cell culture models on human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs) and endothelial EA.hy926 cells, respectively, were used to determine biocompatibility of MBGNs, their influence on alkaline phosphatase (ALP) production, calcium deposition, and cytoskeletal organization. Results showed that Sr,Mg-doping increased pore volume and solubility, and changed the mesoporous structure from worm-like to radial-dendritic, which led to a slightly accelerated drug release compared to pristine MBGNs. Biological assays confirmed that particles are biocompatible, and have ability to slightly induce ALP production and calcium deposition of hBM-MSCs, as well as to significantly improve the proliferation of EA.hy926 compared to biochemical stimulation via vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) administration or regular media. Fluorescence staining revealed that SrMg-MBGNs had a similar effect on EA.hy926 cytoskeletal organization to the VEGF group. In conclusion, Sr,Mg-MBGNs might be considered promising biomaterial for biomedical applications.

Background Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common complication in paediatric patients undergoing abdominal surgeries. Dexmedetomidine and clonidine, both α2-adrenergic agonists, have been proposed as potential treatments for PONV due to their antiemetic properties. This study aimed to compare the efficacies of dexmedetomidine and clonidine in the prevention of PONV in paediatric patients following abdominal surgeries Methods Eighty patients, aged five to 12 years undergoing abdominal surgeries under general anaesthesia were enrolled in this study. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either a single intravenous dose of 0.5 µg/kg of dexmedetomidine (Group D; n=40) or 1 µg/kg of clonidine (Group C; n = 40) 10 minutes before extubation. PONV was recorded for the next 24 hours. Results The baseline characteristics of patients were comparable. A higher proportion of patients in the clonidine group developed PONV as compared to the dexmedetomidine group (27.5% vs 20.0%, p=0.189). The visual analogue scale (VAS) score of group C was higher than that of group D (1.38±1.55 vs 1.00±1.26) but was not statistically significant. The Paediatric Anaesthesia Emergence Delirium (PAED) scale score or emergence agitation (EA) score was higher in group C during recovery time. The mean arterial pressures and the heart rates were comparable in both groups. No significant side effects were reported. Conclusion Our study concludes that dexmedetomidine and clonidine effectively control PONV in paediatric abdominal surgery, with no significant difference in incidence or severity. Dexmedetomidine significantly reduced PAED scale scores during recovery, indicating better control of EA. The two treatments showed comparable mean arterial pressures and heart rates without significant side effects.

Photocatalytic H2O2 production is a green and sustainable route, but far from meeting the increasing demands of industrialization due to the rapid recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers and the sluggish reaction kinetics. Effective strategies for precisely regulating the photogenerated carrier behavior and catalytic activity to construct high-performance photocatalysts are urgently needed. Herein, a nitrogen-site engineering strategy, implying elaborately tuning the species and densities of nitrogen atoms, is applied for H2O2 photogeneration performance regulation. Different nitrogen heterocycles, such as pyridine, pyrimidine, and triazine units, are polymerized with trithiophene units, and five covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with distinct nitrogen species and densities on the skeletons are obtained. Fascinatingly, they photocatalyzed H2O2 production via dominated two-electron O2 reduction processes, including O2-O2 •‒-H2O2 and O2-O2 •‒-O2 1-H2O2 dual pathways. Just in the air and pure water, the multicomponent TTA-TF-COF with the maximum nitrogen densities triazine nitrogen densities exhibited the highest H2O2 production rate of 3343 µmol g-1 h-1, higher than most of other reported COFs. The theoretical calculation revealed the higher activity is due to the easy formation of O2 •‒ and O2 1 in different catalytic process. This study gives a new insight into designing photocatalysis at atomic level.

BACKGROUND: The remarkable advancements in surgical techniques over recent years have shifted the clinical focus from merely reducing mortality to enhancing the quality of postoperative recovery. The duration of a patient's hospital stay serves as a crucial indicator in evaluating postoperative recovery and surgical outcomes. This study aims to identify predictors of the length of hospital stay for children who have undergone corrective surgery for Ebstein Anomaly (EA). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study on children (under 18 years of age) diagnosed with EA who were admitted for corrective surgery between January 2009 and November 2021 at Fuwai Hospital. The primary outcome was the Time to Hospital Discharge (THD). Cox proportional hazard models were utilized to identify predictors of THD. In the context of time-to-event analysis, discharge was considered an event. In cases where death occurred before discharge, it was defined as an extended THD, input as 100 days (exceeding the longest observed THD), and considered as a non-event. RESULTS: A total of 270 children were included in this study, out of which three died in the hospital. Following the Cox proportional hazard analysis, six predictors of THD were identified. The hazard ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals were as follows: age, 1.030(1.005,1.055); C/R > 0.65, 0.507(0.364,0.707); Carpentier type C or D, 0.578(0.429,0.779); CPB time, 0.995(0.991,0.998); dexamethasone, 1.373(1.051,1.795); and transfusion, 0.680(0.529,0.875). The children were categorized into three groups based on the quartile of THD. Compared to children in the ≤ 6 days group, those in the ≥ 11 days group were associated with a higher incidence of adverse outcomes. Additionally, the duration of mechanical ventilation and ICU stay, as well as hospital costs, were significantly higher in this group. CONCLUSION: We identified six predictors of THD for children undergoing corrective surgery for EA. Clinicians can utilize these variables to optimize perioperative management strategies, reduce adverse complications, improve postoperative recovery, and reduce unnecessary medical expenses.

In this article, we have presented a new cancer sensor with a square core Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) to detect the cancerous tissues of the cervix, breast, and skin. This process is thus streamlined and separated by PCF due to its excellent detection characteristics. All required configurations using the finite element method are developed, and various performances of the model are studied using MATLAB. The results depict a mathematical analysis regarding the effectiveness of the sensor within the frequency range of 1.0-2.8 THz. Its relative sensitivity becomes around 99.85% at 2.2 THz with 8.49 × 10-14 dB/m for CL. This PCF has a spot size 3.06 × 10-4 µm that further contributes an effective area of 9.078 × 10-8 m2. Moreover, it has a very small EML of 0.00182 cm-1. This device uses the unique photonic properties of cancer cells to provide quick, reliable, and really very accurate methods for cancer cell identification, such as in breast, cervical, and skin cancers. Due to small size and flexibility, only minimally invasive operations are possible. Real-time monitoring can also be provided, hence improving immediate evaluation and therapy efficacy. This article introduces a novel integration of PCF technology with THz radiation to create a highly sensitive sensor for early cancer detection. By utilizing THz waves' non-invasive and high-resolution properties, this sensor overcomes the sensitivity limitations of traditional methods. It also addresses scattering issues from conventional air hole shapes through optimized geometric configurations, setting a new standard in biomedical sensing and potentially revolutionizing early cancer diagnostics.

In patients with chronic kidney disease, the uremic toxin indoxyl sulfate (IS) accelerates kidney damage and the progression of cardiovascular disease. IS may contribute to vascular diseases by inducing inflammation in endothelial cells. Luteolin has documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to investigate the effect of luteolin on IS-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM-1) and monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP-1) expression in EA.hy926 cells and the possible mechanisms involved. IS significantly induced ROS production (by 6.03-fold, p < 0.05), ICAM-1 (by 2.19-fold, p < 0.05) and MCP-1 protein expression (by 2.18-fold, p < 0.05), and HL-60 cell adhesion (by 31%, p < 0.05), whereas, luteolin significantly decreased IS-induced ROS production, ICAM-1 and MCP-1 protein expression, and HL-60 cell adhesion. Moreover, luteolin attenuated IS-induced nuclear accumulation of p65 and c-jun. Luteolin dose-dependently increased heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression and the maximum fold induction of HO-1 by luteolin was 3.68-fold (p < 0.05), whereas, HO-1 knockdown abolished the suppression of ICAM-1 and MCP-1 expression by luteolin. Luteolin may protect against IS-induced vessel damage by inducing HO-1 expression in vascular endothelial cells, which suppresses nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and activator protein 1 (AP-1) mediated ICAM-1 and MCP-1 expression.

Finding effective pathogen mitigation strategies is one of the biggest challenges humans face today. In the context of wildlife, emerging infectious diseases have repeatedly caused widespread host morbidity and population declines of numerous taxa. In areas yet unaffected by a pathogen, a proactive management approach has the potential to minimize or prevent host mortality. However, typically critical information on disease dynamics in a novel host system is lacking, empirical evidence on efficacy of management interventions is limited, and there is a lack of validated predictive models. As such, quantitative support for identifying effective management interventions is largely absent, and the opportunity for proactive management is often missed. We considered the potential invasion of the chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal), whose expected emergence in North America poses a severe threat to hundreds of salamander species in this global salamander biodiversity hotspot. We developed and parameterized a dynamic multistate occupancy model to forecast host and pathogen occurrence, following expected emergence of the pathogen, and evaluated the response of salamander populations to different management scenarios. Our model forecasted that taking no action is expected to be catastrophic to salamander populations. Proactive action was predicted to maximize host occupancy outcomes relative to wait-and-see reactive management, thus providing quantitative support for proactive management opportunities. The eradication of Bsal was unlikely under all the evaluated management options. Contrary to our expectations, even early pathogen detection had little effect on Bsal or host occupancy outcomes. Our results provide quantitative support that proactive management is the optimal strategy for promoting persistence of disease-threatened salamander populations. Our approach fills a critical gap by defining a framework for evaluating management options prior to pathogen invasion and can thus serve as a template for addressing novel disease threats that jeopardize wildlife and human health.


Apoyo cuantitativo para los beneficios de la gestión proactiva del control de enfermedades silvestres Resumen Uno de los mayores retos en la actualidad es encontrar estrategias eficaces de mitigación de patógenos. En el contexto de la fauna silvestre, las enfermedades infecciosas emergentes han causado en varias ocasiones una morbilidad generalizada de los hospedadores y el declive de las poblaciones de numerosos taxones. En zonas aún no afectadas por un patógeno, un enfoque de gestión proactivo tiene el potencial de minimizar o prevenir la mortalidad de los hospederos. Sin embargo, en general se carece de información crítica sobre la dinámica de la enfermedad en el nuevo sistema huésped, las pruebas empíricas sobre la eficacia de las intervenciones de gestión son limitadas y faltan modelos predictivos validados. Por lo tanto, no existe un apoyo cuantitativo para identificar intervenciones de gestión eficaces y a menudo se pierde la oportunidad de una gestión proactiva. Consideramos la posible invasión del hongo quitridio Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal), cuya aparición prevista en América del Norte supone una grave amenaza para cientos de especies de salamandras en este punto caliente de la biodiversidad mundial de salamandras. La erradicación de Bsal fue improbable bajo todas las opciones de gestión evaluadas. Accumulating evidence suggests that electroacupuncture (EA) has obvious therapeutic effects and unique advantages in alleviating myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI), while the underlying neuromolecular mechanisms of EA intervention for MIRI have not been fully elucidated. The aim of the study is to investigate the role of the neural pathway of hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) neurons projecting to the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) in the alleviation of MIRI rats by EA preconditioning. MIRI models were established by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery for 30 min followed by reperfusion for 2 h. Electrocardiogram recording, chemogenetics, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, multichannel physiology recording and haematoxylin-eosin and immunofluorescence staining methods were conducted to demonstrate that the firing frequencies of neurons in the PVN and the expression of c-Fos decreased by EA pretreatment. Meanwhile, EA preconditioning significantly reduced the levels of creatine kinase isoenzymes (CK-MB), cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH). Virus tracing showed a projection connection between PVN and RVLM. The inhibition of the PVN-RVLM neural pathway could replicate the protective effect of EA pretreatment on MIRI rats. However, the activation of the pathway weakened the effect of EA preconditioning. EA pretreatment alleviated MIRI by regulating PVN neurons projecting to RVLM. This work provides novel evidence of EA pretreatment for alleviating MIRI.
