BACKGROUND: Although renal damage is increasingly reported among the most undernourished patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN), it remains underestimated in current practice, and often associated with acute dehydration. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the frequency, the extent, and the risk factors of renal involvement among adolescents and adults hospitalized in specialized units for AN. METHODS: In this multi-center study, 197 consecutive participants were included, aged 13-65, from 11 inpatient eating disorder psychiatric units. Information on the course of AN, clinical characteristics, biological data, and medication were collected. RESULTS: At admission, mean BMI was 13.1 (± 1.6) kg/m2 for a mean age of 20.74 (± 6.5) years and the z-score was - 3.6 (± 1.33). Six participants (3.0%) had hyponatremia, four (2.0%) had hypokalemia, and nine (4.5%) had hypochloremia. The Blood Urea Nitrogen/Creatinine ratio was over 20 for 21 (10.6%) participants. The mean plasma creatinine was 65.22 (± 12.8) µmol/L, and the mean eGFR was 74.74 (± 18.9) ml/min. Thirty- five participants (17.8%) had an eGFR > 90 ml/min, 123 (62.4%) from 60 to 90 ml/min, 35 (17.8%) from 45 to 60 ml/min, and 4 (2%) under 45 ml/min. In multivariate analysis, only BMI on admission was a determinant of renal impairment. The lower the BMI the more severe was the renal impairment. CONCLUSION: When eGFR is calculated, it highlights renal dysfunction found in severe AN requiring hospitalisation in specialized units. The severity of undernutrition is an independent associated factor. Kidney functionality tests using eGFR, in addition to creatinine alone, should be part of routine care for patients with AN to detect underlying renal dysfunction.


AN is a psychiatric illness with organic repercussions that are not always visible nor frequently investigated. Renal damage, if detected, is often attributed to dehydration, and is thought to be rapidly reversible. Assessment of its severity and evolution is therefore not systematic, even in eating disorder units specialised in the care of patients with AN. Our study explored the assessment of renal impairment among adolescents and adults hospitalized in psychiatric units using eGFR calculation. Our results showed that fewer than 18% of the patients hospitalized had normal renal function and that among the various criteria, only BMI on admission was related to the extent of this impairment. Assessment of renal function by eGFR calculation and not only by creatinine measures should be performed routinely in all situations requiring hospitalization in anorexia nervosa, regardless of the reason for hospitalization.

In this position paper, we review nonacademic and academic discourse on body neutrality, a recent concept that has spread from social media platforms into scientific publications. This discourse has (inaccurately) promulgated that body neutrality is distinct from and more realistic than positive body image and body positivity. We identify and challenge 10 myths found within this discourse: (1) positive body image and body positivity are the same and therefore interchangeable, (2) positive body image isn't realistic or attainable, (3) we should forget about body positivity and positive body image, (4) body neutrality is a new way of thinking about body image, (5) body neutrality is unique from positive body image and positivity, (6) body neutrality is a more realistic and inclusive alternative to positive body image and body positivity, (7) body neutrality is different from positive body image but we can still use the research on positive body image to support body neutrality, (8) body neutrality is a midpoint between negative body image and positive body image, (9) striving for body neutrality is sufficient, and (10) appearance can be disregarded. We offer recommendations applicable to researchers, clinicians, media, and the general public interested in body neutrality.

AIM: To evaluate the impact of haemophilia A without inhibitors on humanistic outcomes in patients and caregivers. Herein, we report a cross-sectional analysis of the baseline data of persons with haemophilia (PWH) participating in the prospective study HEMOLIFE. METHODS: These data are part of a prospective, observational, and multicentre study currently being conducted in 20 hospitals in Spain by haematologists. We included subjects 12 years or older diagnosed with haemophilia. The evaluations included the Maladjustment Scale, Haemophilia-Specific Quality of Life Questionnaire for Adults (HaemoQol)/HaemoQol Short Form (Children), haemophilia-specific version of the Work Productivity and Impairment Questionnaire plus the Classroom Impairment Questionnaire (WPAI+CIQ:HS), Haemophilia Activity List (HAL)/Paediatric Haemophilia Activities List (pedHAL), visual analogue scale (VAS) for evaluating pain, Coping Pain Questionnaire-Reduced (CAD-R), and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). RESULTS: A total of 81 PWH were recruited at 18 centres; 66 PWH were ≥18 years (i.e., adults), and PWH 15 were <18 years (i.e., paediatric patients). Out of the 79 evaluable subjects, 16 (20%) showed an impact of haemophilia on daily life, and the areas most affected were "leisure time" (58% showed maladjustment) and "work/studies" (47% showed maladjustment). Patients reported a higher impact of haemophilia on quality of life (mean [SD] of the transformed score) in the dimensions of "sport" (49.4 [28.6]), "physical health" (40.5 [25.8]) and "future" (37.7 [28.9]). In adults, according to HAL scores, greater impairment of function was observed in "lying/sitting/kneeling/standing," "function of legs" and "leisure activities and sports," with mean normalized scores of 64.7, 65.1 and 69.0, respectively. Productivity was mostly impacted by presenteeism. The pain was infrequent and moderate. According to the HADS scores, nine (11.5%) patients had clinical anxiety and depression. CONCLUSION: PWH without inhibitors exhibited impairments in adjustment, quality of life and functionality, especially related to leisure and sports activities, and exhibit relevant levels of anxiety and depression.

Plant environmental stress response has become a global research hotspot, yet there is a lack of clear understanding regarding the mechanisms that maintain microbial diversity and their ecosystem services under environmental stress. In our research, we examined the effects of moderate elevation on the rhizosphere soil characteristics, microbial community composition, and ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) within agricultural systems. Our findings revealed a notable negative correlation between EMF and elevation, indicating a decline in multifunctionality at higher elevations. Additionally, our analysis across bacterial and protistan communities showed a general decrease in microbial richness with increasing elevation. Using random forest models, pH was identified as the key environmental stressor influencing microbial communities. Furthermore, we found that microbial community diversity is negatively correlated with stability by mediating complexity. Interestingly, while pH was found to affect the complexity within bacterial networks, it did not significantly impact the ecosystem stability along the elevation gradients. Using a Binary-State Speciation and Extinction (BiSSE) model to explore the evolutionary dynamics, we found that Generalists had higher speciation rates and lower extinction rates compared to specialists, resulting in a skewed distribution towards higher net diversification for generalists under increasing environmental stress. Moreover, structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis highlighted a negative correlation between environmental stress and community diversity, but showed a positive correlation between environmental stress and degree of cooperation & competition. These interactions under environmental stress indirectly increased community stability and decreased multifunctionality. Our comprehensive study offers valuable insights into the intricate relationship among environmental factors, microbial communities, and ecosystem functions, especially in the context of varying elevation gradients. These findings contribute significantly to our understanding of how environmental stressors affect microbial diversity and ecosystem services, providing a foundation for future ecological research and management strategies in similar contexts.

OBJECTIVE: This review paper examines biotechnological methods for enhancing edible insects using enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation. Evaluations involve improving functionality, analyzing consumer acceptability elements, guaranteeing safety and quality, negotiating regulatory frameworks, and suggesting field breakthroughs and applications. METHODS: Our method comprises a thorough literature analysis and academic database searches for edible insect enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation investigations. Based on gaps in the literature, we investigate edible insect safety, consumer acceptability, and legal and regulatory issues. RESULTS: The results show biotechnological advances in enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation for edible insect functioning. Sensory and cultural aspects affect consumer acceptability. To ensure edible insect product safety, hazards and pollutants are addressed. The legal analysis highlights compliance issues and possibilities. CONCLUSION: This review shows how enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation improve edible insect functioning, safety, and nutrition. The review includes consumer acceptability dynamics, legal issues, and safety analysis.

Plant proteins are increasingly being used in the food industry due to their sustainability. They can be isolated from food industry waste and converted into value-added ingredients, promoting a more circular economy. In this study, ultrasound-assisted alkaline extraction (UAAE) was optimized to maximize the extraction yield and purity of protein ingredients from grapeseeds. Grapeseed protein was extracted using UAAE under different pH (9-11), temperature (20-50 °C), sonication time (15-45 min), and solid/solvent ratio (10-20 mL/g) conditions. The structural and functional attributes of grapeseed protein and its major fractions (albumins and glutelins) were investigated and compared. The albumin fractions had higher solubilities, emulsifying properties, and in vitro digestibilities but lower fluid binding capacities and thermal stability than the UAAE and glutelin fraction. These findings have the potential to boost our understanding of the structural and functional characteristics of grapeseed proteins, thereby increasing their potential applications in the food and other industries.

BACKGROUND: The literature review notes that people in need of care from Rehabilitation Programs do not always see their continuity ensured. OBJECTIVE: This study aim to analyze the perspective of Specialists Nurse in Rehabilitation Nursing in relation to the organization and specialized intervention of transitional care for older people in need of rehabilitation programs. METHODS: This is a qualitative study within the interpretivist paradigm. A focus group with 8 nurses and 13 interviews with Portuguese nurses were carried out between April 2022 and February 2023. Content analysis was carried out. RESULTS: The triangulation of the data made it possible to identify 3 categories: Coordination of a transitional care program; Empowering the person to self-manage the transitional care process and Empowering the Informal Caregiver. CONCLUSIONS: It is imperative to promote the coordination of transitional care, increase the functional capacity of the person and empower the informal caregiver.

The droplet-based electricity generator (DEG) has facilitated efficient droplet energy harvesting, yet diversifying its applications necessitates the incorporation of various to the DEG. In this study, we first propose a methodology for advancing the DEG by substituting its conventional metallic electrode with electrically conductive water electrode (WE), which is spontaneously generated during the operation of the DEG with operating liquid. Due to the inherent conductive and fluidic nature of water, the introduction of the WE maintains the electrical output performance of the DEG while imparting functionalities such as high transparency and flexibility. So, the resultant WE applied DEG (WE-DEG) exhibits high optical transmittance (∼ 99%) and retains its electricity-generating capability under varying deformations, including bending and stretching. This innovation expands the versatility of the DEG, and especially, a sun-raindrop dual-mode energy harvester is demonstrated by hybridizing the WE-DEG and photovoltaic (PV) cell. This hybridization effectively addresses the weather-dependent limitations inherent in each energy harvester and enhances the temperature-induced inefficiencies typically observed in PV cells, thereby enhancing the overall efficiency. The introduction of the WE will be poised to catalyze new developments in DEG research, paving the way for broader applicability and enhanced efficiency in droplet energy harvesting technologies. Plant-based proteins, like those derived from hemp and rapeseed can contribute significantly to a balanced diet and meet human daily nutritional requirements by providing essential nutrients such as protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. According to numerous recent research papers, the consumption of plant-based proteins has been associated with numerous health benefits, including a reduced risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Plant-based diets are often lower in saturated fat and cholesterol and higher in fiber and phytonutrients, which can support overall health and well-being. Present research investigates the nutritional attributes, functional properties, and potential food applications of hemp and rapeseed protein for a potential use in new food-product development, with a certain focus on identifying anti-nutritional factors and bioactive compounds. Through comprehensive analysis, anti-nutritional factors and bioactive compounds were elucidated, shedding light on their impact on protein quality and digestibility. The study also delves into the functional properties of hemp and rapeseed protein, unveiling their versatility in various food applications. Insights from this research contribute to a deeper understanding of the nutritional value and functional potential of hemp and rapeseed protein, paving the way for their further utilization in innovative food products with enhanced nutritional value and notable health benefits.

Background: Adults with conditions that affect their appearance, known as visible differences, can experience appearance concerns, social anxiety, and depression. Interventions have been developed for this population to facilitate adjustment and coping skills; however, they have limited evidence of efficacy. The Expand Your Horizon [Alleva, J. M., Martijn, C., Van Breukelen, G. J., Jansen, A., & Karos, K. (2015). Expand Your Horizon: A programme that improves body image and reduces self-objectification by training women to focus on body functionality. Body Image, 15, 81-89. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.bodyim.2015.07.001] online functionality-based writing programme was adapted for adults with visible differences. Method: A pilot randomised controlled trial with a wait-list control group was carried out to assess preliminary intervention efficacy and gain information about the acceptability and feasibility of the programme. Forty-four adults aged 21-63 years (M = 40.21; SD = 12.05) with visible differences took part. Various facets of body image (i.e. functionality appreciation and body appreciation) as well as depression and anxiety were assessed immediately pre- and post-intervention and at three-months. Results: Participants reported enjoying the programme, felt that the format was acceptable, and it significantly increased functionality appreciation, which was maintained at three-months. However, there were no improvements in body appreciation, depression, and anxiety. Conclusions: In future, a full trial should be carried out with an active control group.

The increased fish consumption by the growing human population in the world translates into an increase in fish waste. The reintroduction of these fish by-products into food and feed chains presents economic benefits and contributes to counteracting their negative environmental impact. Under this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the dietary inclusion of fish hydrolysate and oil obtained from fish waste (experimental diet) in substitution of shrimp hydrolysate and salmon oil (control diet) mainly imported from third countries on palatability, apparent total tract digestibility, fecal characteristics and metabolites, blood fatty acid profile, flatulence, and coat quality of adult dogs. A two-bowl test was performed to evaluate palatability by the pairwise comparison between the two diets. A feeding trial was conducted according to a crossover design with two diets (control and experimental diets), six adult Beagle dogs per diet, and two periods of 6 weeks each. The replacement of shrimp hydrolysate and salmon oil with fish hydrolysate and oil did not affect the first diet approach and taste, as well as the intake ratio. Generally, the digestibility of dry matter, nutrients, and energy was not affected by diet, but the intake of digestible crude protein (CP) and ether extract was higher, respectively, with the control and the experimental diet. The higher intake of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid with the experimental diet was reflected in a higher content of these long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and the omega-3 index of red blood cells, but it did not affect coat quality. The significantly higher intake of digestible CP with the control diet might have contributed to the higher fecal ammonia-N and valerate concentrations. Daily fecal output and characteristics were similar between diets. Overall, results suggest that fish hydrolysate and oil from the agrifood industry might constitute sustainable functional ingredients for dog feeding while adding value for wild fisheries, aquaculture, and fish farming under a circular economy approach and reducing dependence on imports from third countries with a high carbon footprint.

Pea proteins are gaining increased interest from both the food industry as well as from consumers. Pea protein isolates (PPI) excel at forming meat-like textures upon heating while pea protein concentrates (PPC) are more challenging to transform into highly sought-after foods. PPCs are richer in dietary fibers (DF) and are more sustainable to produce than PPI. In this work, degradative enzymes were used to modify the functionality of PPC-water blends with a focus on texturization upon heating. Three enzyme solutions containing ß-glucanases, hemicellulases, pectinases, xylanase, and cellulases were added to 65 wt% PPC blends. The effect of these enzymatic pretreatments was measured by monitoring the torque in a mixing reactor during blending, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), high-pressure shear rheology (HPSR), and DF content and size analysis. Four endothermic peaks were detected in the DSC thermograms of PPC, namely at 63 °C, 77 °C, 105 °C and 123 °C. The first three peaks were attributed to phase transition and gelation temperatures of the starches and proteins constituting PPC. No endothermic peaks were measured for PPI blends. Enzyme solutions containing ß-glucanases, hemicellulases, pectinases, and xylanases increased the endothermic energy of all peaks, hinting at an effect on the gelation properties of PPC. The same enzymes decreased the resistance to flow of PPC blends and induced a shift of the weight average molecular weight (Mw) distribution of soluble dietary fibers (SDF) towards smaller values while increasing the fraction of SDF by decreasing the insoluble dietary fiber (IDF) content. The solution containing cellulases did not change the DSC results or the viscosity of the PPC mixture, nor did it affect the IDF and SDF contents. On the other hand HPSR measurements of heated PPC samples up to 125 °C showed that all tested enzyme solutions decreased the complex viscosity of PPC-water blends to values similar to PPI-water blends. We demonstrated that degradative enzymes can enhance the functionality of less refined protein-rich ingredients based on pea and other vegetal sources. Using optimized enzyme blends for targeted applications can prove to be a key changer in the development and improvement of sustainable protein-rich foods.

Accumulation of pathogenic factors in the blood may cause irreversible damage and may even be life-threatening. Hemoperfusion is an effective technique for eliminating pathogenic factors, which is widely used in the treatment of various diseases including liver failure, renal failure, sepsis, and others. Hemoperfusion adsorbents are crucial in this process as they specifically bind and remove the target pathogenic factors. This review describes the development of hemoperfusion adsorbents, detailing the different properties exhibited by inorganic materials, organic polymers, and new materials. Advances in natural and synthetic polymers and novel materials manufacturing techniques have driven the expansion of hemoperfusion adsorbents in clinical applications. Stimuli-responsive (smart responsive) adsorbents with controllable molecular binding properties have many promising and environmentally friendly biomedical applications. Knowledge gaps, future research directions, and prospects for hemoperfusion adsorbents are discussed.

UNASSIGNED: Excess body weight has become a global epidemic and a significant risk factor for developing chronic diseases, which are the leading causes of worldwide morbidities. Adipose tissue (AT), primarily composed of adipocytes, stores substantial amounts of energy and plays a crucial role in maintaining whole-body glucose and lipid metabolism. This helps prevent excessive body fat accumulation and lipotoxicity in peripheral tissues. In addition, AT contains endothelial cells and a substantial population of immune cells (constituting 60-70% of non-adipocyte cells), including macrophages, T and B lymphocytes, and natural killer cells. These resident immune cells engage in crosstalk with adipocytes, contributing to the maintenance of metabolic and immune homeostasis in AT. An exacerbated inflammatory response or inadequate immune resolution can lead to chronic systemic low-grade inflammation, triggering the development of metabolic alterations and the onset of chronic diseases. This review aims to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms through which immune cells influence AT function and energy homeostasis. We also focus on the interactions and functional dynamics of immune cell populations, highlighting their role in maintaining the delicate balance between metabolic health and obesity-related inflammation. Finally, understanding immunometabolism is crucial for unraveling the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases and developing targeted immunotherapeutic strategies. Rice protein (RP) and polyphenols are often used in functional foods. This study investigated the non-covalent interactions between RP and three polyphenols (curcumin, CUR; quercetin, QUE; resveratrol, RES) and used the complexes as emulsifiers to create emulsions. Three polyphenols interacted with RP to varying extents, with QUE showing the greatest binding affinity and inducing the greatest alterations in its secondary structure. Molecular docking analysis elucidated the driving forces between them including hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and van der Waals forces. Combination with QUE or RES induced structural changes of RP, increasing particle size of complexes. The synergistic effect of polyphenols and protein also enhanced radical scavenging capacity of complexes. Compared to pure protein, all complexes successfully created emulsions with smaller particle size (378-395 nm vs. 470 nm), higher absolute potential (37.43-38.26 mV vs. 35.62 mV), and greater lipid oxidation stability by altering protein conformation.

BACKGROUND: The diversity of patients' symptomatology among people seeking treatment on community-based mental health services poses significant challenges to traditional models of care. Recent approaches favor identifying transdiagnostic factors that allow a better understanding of patient heterogeneity and designing more effective and quality interventions. This study examines the heterogeneity of patients with internalizing symptoms based on profiles identified with cognitive and motivational control variables. Differences between these profiles on dimensional measures of psychopathology and quality of life are examined. METHODS: 263 patients were selected by non-probabilistic sampling procedures on mental health services in the province of Huelva (Spain). A latent class analysis on the standardized scale scores of The Behavioral Inhibition/Behavioral Activation System Scales and the Effortful Control Scale of the Adult Temperament Questionnaire Short-Form was conducted. Profiles were compared on the scores of the Inventory of Depression and Anxiety Symptoms-II, the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule II, and the Health Assessment Questionnaire SF-36. RESULTS: The four latent profile solution is the one that showed the best fit indicators and substantive interpretability, with a kappa of 0.94 in the cross-validation procedure with 75% of the sample. No sex differences were found between the profiles (χ32 5.17, p = .160). Profiles #1 and #3, both characterized by an imbalance between low activation and high inhibition, had lower well-being, lower functionality, and quality of life. When comparing profile #2 (featuring the highest inhibitory control) lower scores on most internalizing scales are observed, specially claustrophobia, social anxiety, panic mania. Profile #4 (low control, high activation, and high inhibition) showed greater scores on both mania and euphoria and lower scores on emotional role. CONCLUSIONS: We identified four distinctive profiles that had overly increased behavioral inhibition (as expected in internalizing disorders) and differed in the degree of imbalance between inhibition and activation systems, and between motivational systems and top-down cognitive control. The profile characterized by high activation and reduced cognitive (inhibitory) control was the one showing greater mood-related symptoms and lower levels of quality of life. These profiles could be generated by treatment providers to guide clinical management in an evidence-based manner.

Residual lipids (RL) in whey protein isolate (WPI) are detrimental to optimal functional applications (like foaming and low turbidity) and contribute to off-flavor development during powder storage. The objective of this research was to prepare an experimental WPI by removing RL without using the traditional microfiltration (MF) process and compare its properties with commercially available WPIs made using MF and some other whey powders. We hypothesize that by adjusting the pH of whey to < 5.0, we would be close to the isoelectric point of any remaining denatured proteins (DP) and phospholipoproteins (PLP), and therefore reduce electrostatic repulsion between these molecules. Further, demineralization of the acidified whey protein solution by ultrafiltration (UF) combined with diafiltration (DF) should reduce ionic hindrance to aggregation and thereby help with the aggregation of these denatured proteins as well as most RL; centrifugation or clarification could be used to remove these materials. Calcium should also be more extensively removed by this approach, which should improve the heat stability of the experimental WPI. Demineralization was achieved on a pilot scale by acidifying liquid (cheese) whey protein concentrate (WPC-34) to pH 4.5 using HCl, and UF the whey protein solution along with extensive DF using acidified (pH∼3.5) reverse osmosis filtered (RO) water. Demineralized whey protein solution was adjusted to various combinations of pH (4.1 to 4.9), conductivities (500 to 2000 µS.cm-1), and protein concentrations (1 to 7%) and then centrifuged at 10,000 × g for 10 min. The effective sedimentation (precipitation) of RL in these treatments was estimated by measuring the turbidity of the supernatants. Maximum precipitation was observed at pH 4.5-4.7. Reducing conductivity via UF/DF increased the precipitation of RL due to reduced ionic hindrance to aggregation Maximum sedimentation of RL was observed at protein concentrations ≤3% because of a higher density difference between the precipitate and serum phase. SDS-PAGE analysis confirmed the sedimentation of PLPs, caseins, and DPs upon isoelectric precipitation at pH ∼4.5, while native whey proteins or undenatured whey proteins remained soluble in the supernatant, unaffected by the pretreatment. To scale up the process, 750 L of fluid WPC34 was acidified and demineralized by UF (volume concentration factor = 1.35) and DF until the permeate solids reached 0.1% (when desired demineralization was achieved), clarified using a pilot-scale desludging clarifier to remove RL, neutralized, ultrafiltered to concentrate the protein, and then spray-dried to produce an experimental WPI (91% protein and 1.8% fat db). In another trial, demineralized UF concentrate was clarified by gravity sedimentation and the supernatant was neutralized, ultrafiltered, and spray-dried to produce a second experimental WPI (91% protein and < 1% fat db). These experimental WPI powders were compared with several commercially available WPI powders to assess functional properties like solubility, heat stability, foamability and foam strength, gelation, and sensory attributes over accelerated storage. Experimental WPI had excellent functional properties, had low turbidity, were highly heat stable and only developed very slight to slight off-flavors upon accelerated storage, their properties were comparable to the WPI manufactured commercially using MF even after accelerated storage.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disorder caused by the loss of dopamine-producing cells in the substantia nigra and characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. Boxing is a type of complementary therapy to improve symptoms in PD. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of boxing training on the functionality and quality of life of patients with PD. The literature search was performed on PubMed, Scopus, PEDro, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar search engines. The PEDro scale was used to assess the methodological quality of the studies. This systematic review included three studies that examined disease severity, mobility, physical activity, balance, and quality of life. According to the PEDro scale criteria, the three articles included were of high methodological quality. Statistically significant improvements after the implementation of boxing training was shown for balance and quality of life in contrast to the other variables. Boxing training intervention programs had a positive effect on balance and quality of life in patients with PD; however, the results are conflicting regarding certain functionality variables. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct further research to examine the effectiveness of boxing training on the functionality and quality of life of patients with Parkinson's disease.

This study aimed to examine the mediating role of body image coping strategies in the relationship between positive body image and wellbeing. Three hundred and seventy-two women and three hundred and seventy-seven men completed a questionnaire assessing body appreciation, body appreciation functionality, body compassion, body image coping strategies (appearance fixing, avoidance, positive rational acceptance), self-acceptance and overall psychological wellbeing. Path analysis showed that avoidance significantly mediated the relationship between body appreciation and overall psychological wellbeing among both women and men; its mediating role was confirmed for men's but not for women's self-acceptance. Positive rational acceptance was a significant mediator of the relationship between body compassion and both psychological wellbeing and self-acceptance among men but not among women. These findings show that higher body appreciation is associated with a lower tendency to avoid appearance-related cognitions or thoughts that are interpreted as threatening, with an indirect effect on women's and men's psychological wellbeing. Analogously, but only for men, body compassion is associated with mental activities and self-care behaviors that foster rational self-talk and the acceptance of one's experiences, which, in turn, are linked to higher wellbeing. These findings can help to plan programs aimed at fostering individuals' wellbeing by focusing on their positive body image considering gender differences.

HYPOTHESIS: Magnetic particles are widely used in many adsorption and removal processes. Among the many types of magnetic colloids, magnetic Janus particles offer significant possibilities for the effective removal of several components from aqueous solutions. Nevertheless, the synthesis of structures integrating different types of materials requires scalable fabrication processes to overcome the limitations of the available methodologies. Herein, we hypothesized a fabrication process for dual-surface functionalized magnetic Janus particles. EXPERIMENTS: The primary silica particles with surface-attached amine groups are further asymmetrically modified by iron oxide nanoparticles, exploiting Pickering emulsion and electroless deposition techniques. The dual surface functionality of the particles is designed for its versatility and demonstrated in two wastewater-related applications. FINDINGS: We show that our design can simultaneously remove chromium (VI) and phenol from aqueous solution. The fabricated magnetic-responsive Janus particles are also an effective adsorbent for genomic Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and show superior performance to commercial magnetic beads. Thus, this study provides a novel platform for designing magnetic Janus particles with multifunctional surfaces for wastewater treatment applications.
