RESUMEN

Non-degradable plastic mulch films used in agriculture are polluting the environment by leaving residues and microplastics in the soil. They are also difficult to recycle due to contamination during their use. Biodegradable mulch films are needed as alternatives so that they can be used effectively during the growing season and later be ploughed to be degraded in soil. However, market-available so-called biodegradable mulch films are very slow to degrade in the natural environment and thus do not fit with crop rotation demands or annual cultivation. In this study, we have developed mulch films from cotton gin trash (CGT) and/or gin motes (GM) in combination with biodegradable polycaprolactone and demonstrated their effectiveness over 3 months in outdoor conditions. Both the stability and degradation behaviours of mulch film samples were observed when they were placed on top of the soil and buried in the soil, respectively. Pesticide residue analysis also was carried out on CGT powder to identify and quantify individual pesticides against a matrix of known pesticides. The mulch films prepared in this study showed comparable and stable mechanical properties compared to commercial biodegradable mulch film, though were much quicker to degrade when buried in the soil. No pesticides were detected in the CGT samples. The films produced were vapour-permeable and may be useful in practical agricultural settings by being able to maintain consistent soil moisture and allowing precipitation to penetrate gradually. The lab-scale production cost for the film was 98.8 AUD/kg, which could be lowered by integrating a continuous film line in large-scale production.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are a major problem affecting sheep production systems worldwide. The flocks infected with GINs can undergo significant economic losses due to a decrease in productivity, the animals' deaths, and the costs associated with treatments. The over-reliance on anthelmintics in the past years to eliminate GINs has resulted in the development of resistance against the available commercial anthelmintics. Genetically resistant animals can be used in mating systems to improve the overall flock resistance. This review aimed to summarize the estimated genetic parameters for resistance traits and genetic gains through the use of genetic/genomic selection for resistance to GINs in sheep. Heritability estimates from the literature ranged from 0.00 to 0.46 for fecal egg counts, 0.12 to 0.37 for packed cell volume/hematocrit, 0.07 to 0.26 for FAffa MAlan CHArt (FAMACHA©), from 0.10 to 0.37 for blood parameters, and 0.19 for Immunoglobulin A. Genetic correlations between traits measuring resistance to GINs and production traits ranged from negative to positive values in the literature. Genetic gains are possible when genetic/genomic selection for GIN resistance is applied. Therefore, genetic/genomic selection can be used to improve flocks' resistance to GINs as a sustainable approach in sheep production systems.

Obesity is a metabolic dysfunction characterized by excessive body fat deposition as a consequence of an energy imbalance. Novel therapeutic strategies have emerged that are safe and have comparatively low side effects for obesity treatment. Functional foods and nutraceuticals have recently received a great deal of attention because of their components with the properties of antimetabolic syndrome. Based on our previous in vitro and in vivo investigations on anti-adipogenesis activity and improved body fat accumulation in serials, the combination of three ingredients (including bainiku-ekisu, black garlic, and Mesona procumbens Hemsl), comprising the Mei-Gin formula (MGF), was eventually selected as a novel inhibitor that exhibited preventive effects against obesity. Herein, we verify the anti-obesity effects of MGF in obese rats induced by a high-fat diet and discuss the potential molecular mechanisms underlying obesity development. Oral administration of MGF significantly suppressed the final body weight, weight change, energy and water intake, subcutaneous and visceral fat mass, liver weight, hepatic total lipids and triglycerides (TG), and serum levels of TG, triglycerides (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), alanine transaminase (AST), uric acid, and ketone bodies and augmented fecal total lipids, TG, and cholesterol excretion in the high-dose MGF-supplemented groups. Furthermore, the corresponding lipid metabolic pathways revealed that MGF supplementation effectively increased lipolysis and fatty acid oxidation gene expression and attenuated fatty acid synthesis gene expression in the white adipose tissue (WAT) and liver and it also increased mitochondrial activation and thermogenic gene expression in the brown adipose tissue (BAT) of rats with obesity induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). These results demonstrate that the intake of MGF can be beneficial for the suppression of HFD-induced obesity in rats through the lipolysis, fatty oxidation, and thermogenesis pathway. In conclusion, these results demonstrate the anti-obesity efficacy of MGF in vivo and suggest that MGF may act as a potential therapeutic agent against obesity.

Specific IgA antibody has been shown to play an important role in resistance to gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections in sheep, particularly in Teladorsagia circumcincta parasitosis. In some breeds, negative associations have been shown between IgA levels and worm burden in experimentally infected sheep. In the present study, we have studied the relationship between IgA levels in naturally infected sheep (582 ewes in total; 193 younger than one year old and 389 older than one year old) and fecal egg count (FEC) in the Assaf, Castellana, and Churra breeds. ELISA assays were performed to measure IgA levels against the somatic antigen of T. circumcincta third larval stage (L3) and a 203-amino-acid fragment of the protein disulfide isomerase from the same GIN species. A multilevel random intercept model was developed to predict the infection risk according to age or breed. Spearman's correlation rank was used for statistical analysis. The prediction model showed that breed was not an influential factor in this study, although the Assaf breed could be considered slightly more susceptible than the others. In addition, age affected the infection risk, with the young ewes more susceptible to infection than the adult groups, except for the Castellana breed, whose risk of infection was similar at all ages. The most significant positive association was found between FEC and IgA measured in the nasal secretions of young ewes using both antigens (Rho = 0.5; p = 0.00); the correlation of FEC with IgA in serum was moderately significant (Rho = 0.306; p = 0.00). Comparing both antigens, the protein disulfide isomerase antigen was less reactive than the somatic antigen from L3. In conclusion, under natural conditions, specific IgA against GIN was positively associated with FEC in sheep, with nasal secretions from young animals being the sample where this association is stronger, which, therefore, could be used as a marker of infection in further studies.

Monitoring and modeling of airborne particulate matter (PM) from low-altitude sources is becoming an important regulatory target as the adverse health consequences of PM become better understood. However, application of models not specifically designed for simulation of PM from low-altitude emissions may bias predictions. To address this problem, we describe the modification and validation of an air dispersion model for the simulation of low-altitude PM dispersion from a typical cotton ginning facility. We found that the regulatory recommended model (AERMOD) overestimated pollutant concentrations by factors of 64.7, 6.97 and 7.44 on average for PM2.5, PM10, and TSP, respectively. Pollutant concentrations were negatively correlated with height (p < 0.05), distance from source (p < 0.05) and standard deviation of wind direction (p < 0.001), and positively correlated with average wind speed (p < 0.001). Based on these results, we developed dispersion correction factors for AERMOD and cross-validated the revised model against independent observations, reducing overestimation factors to 3.75, 1.52 and 1.44 for PM2.5, PM10 and TSP, respectively. Further reductions in model error may be obtained from use of additional observations and refinement of dispersive correction factors. More generally, the correction permits the validated adjustment and application of pre-existing models for risk assessment and development of remediation techniques. The same approach may also be applied to improve simulations of other air pollutants and environmental conditions of concern.

Cotton gin trash (CGT), a lignocellulosic waste generated during cotton fibre processing, has recently received significant attention for production of composite bio-plastics. However, earlier studies were limited to either with biodegradable polymers, through small-scale solution-casting method, or using industrially adaptable extrusion route, but with non-biodegradable polymers. In this study, a scale-up production of completely biodegradable CGT composite plastic film with adjustable biodegradation rate is proposed. First using a twin screw extruder, the prepared CGT powder was combined with polycaprolactone (PCL) to form pellets, and then using the compressing moulding, the pellets were transformed into bio-plastic composite films. Hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used as a plasticiser in the mixture and its impact on the biodegradation rate was analysed. The morphology of CGT bio-plastic composite films showed even distribution of CGT powder within the PCL matrix. The CGT incorporation improved the UV resistance, thermal stability, and Young's modulus of PCL material. Further, the flexibility and mixing properties of the composites were improved by PEG. Overall, this study demonstrated a sustainable production method of CGT bio-plastic films using the whole CGT and without any waste residue produced, where the degradation of the produced composite films can be adjusted to minimise the environmental impact.

Gin is one of the most consumed distilled alcoholic spirits worldwide, with more than 400 million liters sold every year. It is most often produced through redistillation of agricultural ethanol in the presence of botanicals, most notably juniper berries, which give gin its characteristic flavor. Due to its natural ingredients, gin is a complex mixture of hundreds of volatile and nonvolatile chemical constituents. In this work, ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry was used for the compositional analysis of 16 commercially produced gins. Two complementary ionization methods, namely, electrospray ionization (ESI) and atmospheric-pressure photoionization (APPI), were employed to cover a wider compositional space. Each gin provided unique chemical fingerprints by ESI and APPI, which allowed semiquantitative analysis of 135 tentatively identified compounds, including terpene hydrocarbons, terpenoids, phenolics, fatty acids, aldehydes, and esters. Most of these compounds have not been previously reported in gins. While chemical fingerprints were rather similar between most products, some products contained unique compounds due to their special natural ingredients or the production methods applied. For instance, a barrel-matured gin contained a high content of syringaldehyde and sinapaldehyde, which are typical phenolic aldehydes originated from oak wood. In addition, the relative abundance of vanillin, vanillic acid, gallic acid, coniferyl aldehyde, and syringaldehyde was clearly higher than in the other gin samples. Ultrahigh-resolution FT-ICR MS serves as a powerful tool for direct chemical fingerprinting of gin or any other distilled spirit, which can be used for rapid product quality screening, product optimization, or possible counterfeit product discovery.

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections are considered the most important disease of grazing sheep and due to increasing anthelmintic resistance, chemical control alone is inadequate. Resistance to Gastrointestinal nematode infection is a heritable trait, and through natural selection many sheep breeds have higher resistance. Studying the transcriptome from GIN-exposed and GIN-unexposed sheep using RNA-Sequencing technology can provide measurements of transcript levels associated with the host response to Gastrointestinal nematode infection, and these transcripts may harbor genetic markers that can be used in selective breeding programs to enhance disease resistance. The objective of this study was to compare liver transcriptomes of sheep naturally exposed to Gastrointestinal nematode s, with either high or low parasite burdens, to GIN-unexposed control sheep in order to identify key regulator genes and biological processes associated with Gastrointestinal nematode infection. Differential gene expression analysis revealed no significant differentially expressed genes (DEG) between sheep with a high or low parasite burden (p-value ≤0.01; False Discovery Rate (FDR) ≤ 0.05; and Fold-Change (FC) of > ±2). However, when compared to the control group, low parasite burden sheep showed 146 differentially expressed genes (64 upregulated and 82 downregulated in the low parasite burden group relative to the control), and high parasite burden sheep showed 159 differentially expressed genes (57 upregulated and 102 downregulated in the low parasite burden group relative to the control) (p-value ≤0.01; FDR ≤0.05; and FC of > ±2). Among these two lists of significant differentially expressed genes, 86 differentially expressed genes (34 upregulated, 52 downregulated in the parasited group relative to the control) were found in common between the two parasite burden groups compared to the control (GIN-unexposed sheep). Functional analysis of these significant 86 differentially expressed genes found upregulated genes involved in immune response and downregulated genes involved in lipid metabolism. Results of this study offer insight into the liver transcriptome during natural Gastrointestinal nematode exposure that helps provide a better understanding of the key regulator genes involved in Gastrointestinal nematode infection in sheep.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the potential anti-obesity properties of an innovative functional formula (called the Mei-Gin formula: MGF) consisting of bainiku-ekisu, Prunus mume (70% ethanol extract), black garlic (water extract), and Mesona procumbens Hemsl. (40% ethanol extract) for reducing lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes in vitro and obese rats in vivo. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The prevention and regression of high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity by the intervention of Japan Mei-Gin, MGF-3 and -7, and positive health supplement powder were investigated in male Wistar rats. The anti-obesity effects of MGF-3 and -7 in rats with HFD-induced obesity were examined by analyzing the role of visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue in the development of obesity. RESULTS: The results indicated that MGF-1-7 significantly suppressed lipid accumulation and cell differentiation through the down-regulation of GPDH activity, as a key regulator in the synthesis of triglycerides. Additionally, MGF-3 and MGF-7 exhibited a greater inhibitory effect on adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. The high-fat diet increased body weight, liver weight, and total body fat (visceral and subcutaneous fat) in obese rats, while these alterations were effectively improved by the administration of MGF-3 and -7, especially MGF-7. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the role of the Mei-Gin formula, particularly MGF-7, in anti-obesity action, which has the potential to be used as a therapeutic agent for the prevention or treatment of obesity.

Goat production in Mexico is an important economic activity that is affected by different gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) species. GINs resistant to commercial anthelmintics have been reported. Plant extracts or agro-industrial by-products, such as coffee pulp, have been proposed as control alternatives, given their secondary metabolite content. The aim of the present study was to determine the anthelmintic activity of the hydroalcoholic extract of coffee pulp against benzimidazole-resistant GINs. Stool samples were collected from goats, from which GIN eggs were identified and quantified. Molecular techniques confirmed the genus of GINs and their benzimidazole resistance profile. The percentage of egg hatching inhibition (% EHI) and larval mortality (% LM) with the hydroalcoholic extract of coffee pulp was determined at concentrations from 200 to 0.39 mg/mL. The genera Haemonchus spp. and Trichostrongylus spp. were identified, and the presence of the ß-tubulin gene mutation, associated with benzimidazole (BZ) resistance, was determined. Hydroalcoholic extract of coffee pulp inhibited 100% of egg hatching at 200 and 100 mg/mL, with no larvicidal effect at the evaluated concentrations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to develop an extension of the widely used GIN-McMaster Guideline Development Checklist and Tool for the integration of quality assurance and improvement (QAI) schemes with guideline development. METHODS: We used a mixed-methods approach incorporating evidence from a systematic review, an expert workshop and a survey of experts to iteratively create an extension of the checklist for QAI through three rounds of feedback. As a part of this process, we also refined criteria of a good guideline-based quality indicator. RESULTS: We developed a 40-item checklist extension addressing steps for the integration of QAI into guideline development across the existing 18 topics and created one new topic specific to QAI. The steps span from 'organization, budget, planning and training', to updating of QAI and guideline implementation. CONCLUSION: The tool supports integration of QAI schemes with guideline development initiatives and it will be used in the forthcoming integrated European Commission Initiative on Colorectal Cancer. Future work should evaluate this extension and QAI items requiring additional support for guideline developers and links to QAI schemes.

Parkinson's disease (PD) has been designated as one of the priority neurodegenerative disorders worldwide. Although diagnostic biomarkers have been identified, early onset detection and targeted therapy are still limited. An integrated systems and structural biology approach were adopted to identify therapeutic targets for PD. From a set of 49 PD associated genes, a densely connected interactome was constructed. Based on centrality indices, degree of interaction and functional enrichments, LRRK2, PARK2, PARK7, PINK1 and SNCA were identified as the hub-genes. PARK2 (Parkin) was finalized as a potent theranostic candidate marker due to its strong association (score > 0.99) with α-synuclein (SNCA), which directly regulates PD progression. Besides, modeling and validation of Parkin structure, an extensive virtual-screening revealed small (commercially available) inhibitors against Parkin. Molecule-258 (ZINC5022267) was selected as a potent candidate based on pharmacokinetic profiles, Density Functional Theory (DFT) energy calculations (ΔE = 6.93 eV) and high binding affinity (Binding energy = -6.57 ± 0.1 kcal/mol; Inhibition constant = 15.35 µM) against Parkin. Molecular dynamics simulation of protein-inhibitor complexes further strengthened the therapeutic propositions with stable trajectories (low structural fluctuations), hydrogen bonding patterns and interactive energies (>0kJ/mol). Our study encourages experimental validations of the novel drug candidate to prevent the auto-inhibition of Parkin mediated ubiquitination in PD.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is common, especially among severely ill patients. While acute tubular necrosis (ATN) is one of the most common findings in published kidney biopsy series for patients with COVID-19 infections, a number of glomerular pathologies have been described as well. Among glomerular pathologies in COVID-19, COVID-19-Associated Collapsing Glomerulopathy (COVAN) remains the most common pattern of injury. Patients with 2 high-risk APOL1 alleles appear to be at increased risk for COVAN, similar to other forms of collapsing glomerulopathy such as HIV-Associated Nephropathy. Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) is a less common finding in patients with COVID-19 and reported cases have been mild. Reports of a subtype of AIN, granulomatous interstitial nephritis (GIN), among COVID-19 patients are extremely rare and have not been reported in association with COVAN. Here, we report a case of COVAN associated with severe GIN.

Effective gastrointestinal nematode management in livestock industries is becoming increasingly difficult due to the rise of anthelmintic resistance and changes in the temporal and geographical distribution of major gastrointestinal nematodes. Underpinning the response to these challenges is the need for a fast-tracked diagnostic identification technique, making it easier for livestock producers to make informed gastrointestinal nematode management decisions. The traditional 'gold-standard' approach, larval culture followed by morphological differentiation, is laborious and potentially inaccurate. We developed a new diagnostic approach to identify gastrointestinal nematodes that integrates a remote-location digital faecal egg count platform, FECPAKG2, with internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) nemabiome metabarcoding. The technique involves a quick and simple protocol to harvest concentrated strongyle eggs from the FECPAKG2 cassette utilising a repurposed pipette tip, followed by DNA isolation and Illumina next generation amplicon sequencing. The gastrointestinal nematode compositions and alpha diversity generated by our FECPAKG2 egg nemabiome metabarcoding approach was not significantly different to traditional morphological larval differentiation and nemabiome metabarcoding of larval and faecal samples. We demonstrated that storing FECPAKG2 harvested eggs in either DNA isolation lysis buffer or 80% ethanol (v/v) had no impact on gastrointestinal nematode identification outcomes for at least 60 days; enabling the transport of biological samples from their remote origins to a molecular diagnostic facility for nemabiome metabarcoding, in the absence of a cold chain. We discovered that sustained gastrointestinal nematode egg embryonation in the lysis buffer storage solution lead to higher yields of DNA compared with ethanol-stored gastrointestinal nematode eggs or faeces with gastrointestinal nematode eggs. Taking advantage of an already well-established platform such as FECPAKG2, and providing the livestock producers that use it with the option to identify gastrointestinal nematodesin their samples and contribute to large-scale gastrointestinal nematode distribution and/or anthelmintic resistance surveys, is an important future direction for the FECPAKG2 egg nemabiome metabarcoding approach.

Natural α-bisabolol has been widely used in cosmetics and is sourced mainly from the stems of Candeia trees that have become endangered due to over exploitation. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of cotton gin trash (CGT) essential oil and the major terpenoid (ß-bisabolol) purified from the oil were investigated against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages as well as the 3t3 and HS27 fibroblast cell lines. Nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and interleukin 8 (IL-8) were measured using Greiss reagent, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and cytokine bead array (CBA)-flow cytometry. Non-toxic concentrations of CGT oil and ß-bisabolol (1.6-50.0 µg/mL) significantly inhibited the production of the inflammatory mediators in a dose-dependent manner. Maximal inhibition by ß-bisabolol was 55.5% for NO, 62.3% for PGE2, and 45.3% for TNF-α production in RAW cells. ß-Bisabolol induced a level of inhibition similar to an equal concentration of α-bisabolol (50.0 µg/mL), a known anti-inflammatory agent. These results suggest ß-bisabolol exerts similar in vitro effects to known topical anti-inflammatory agents and could therefore be exploited for cosmetic and therapeutic uses. This is the first study to report the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of ß-bisabolol in CGT essential oil.

RESUMEN

Genomic instability (GIN) is pivotal in regulating tumor drug resistance, which blocked the treatment of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). Although recent studies implied that non-coding RNA (ncRNA)-mediated autophagy abolishment promoted tumorigenesis by up-regulation of GIN, autophagy was known as a risk factor in tumor drug resistance. However, previous study also pointed that up-regulation of autophagy promoted GIN. Therefore, the relationship between autophagy and GIN is not clear, and more work is needed. And, if an ncRNA is identified to be a co-regulator of autophagy and GIN, it will be a potential therapy target of chemotherapy resistance in TNBC. In our study, we recognized both autophagy-GIN-associated microRNA (mi-26a-5p) by big data analysis, which was prognosis-correlated in breast cancer. Next, we identified the up-stream regulators (long non-coding RNA, lncRNA) and down-stream targets of miR-26a-5p by bioinformatics analysis (online public databases). Finally, we established lncRNA OTUD6B-AS1/miR-26a-5p/MTDH signaling pathway, and verified their functions by cytological, molecular biological and zoological experiments. In general, our study found (1) miR-26a-5p was a protective factor of breast cancer, while OTUD6B-AS1 and MTDH were risk factors; (2) OTUD6B-AS1 was the up-stream regulator of miR-26a-5p verified by luciferase; (3) up-regulation of miR-26a-5p and down-regulation of MTDH promoted cellular cytotoxicity of paclitaxel (PTX) in vitro and in vivo. (4) down-regulation of miR-26a-5p, overexpression of MTDH and OTUD6B-AS1 promoted autophagy and DNA damage; (5) up-regulation of OTUD6B-AS1 and MTDH inhibited DNA damage response (DDR) by inhibiting the phosphorylated activation of RAD51, ATR and ATM.

BACKGROUND: Although tinnitus has a prevalence between 20 and 42.8%, the currently recommended management for tinnitus, such as tinnitus support and psychologic therapies, are relatively time-consuming and expensive. Several new pharmacologic treatments designed for tinnitus patients without specific origin had been developed but their efficacy remains unclear. METHODS: The current Network Meta-Analysis (NMA) of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of different pharmacologic treatments for tinnitus management in tinnitus patients without specific or treatable origin (i.e. primary tinnitus). Databases were searched from inception to April 5th, 2021. All network meta-analytic procedures were conducted under the frequentist model. We calculated the effect size of outcomes with different rating scales with standardized mean difference. PROSPERO registration: CRD42020177742. FINDINGS: Overall, 36 RCTs were included with 2,761 participants. The main results revealed that pharmacologic interventions with brain-acting effect (for example, amitriptyline, acamprosate, and gabapentin) and those with anti-inflammation/anti-oxidant effect (for example, intra-tympanic dexamethasone injection plus oral melatonin) were associated with superior improvement in tinnitus severity and response rate compared to placebo/control. Oral amitriptyline were associated with the highest improvement in tinnitus severity and the fourth highest response rate. None of the investigated interventions was associated with different changes in quality of life compared to placebo/control. All the investigated treatments were associated with similar drop-out rate to placebo/control. INTERPRETATION: The current NMA suggests a potential role for treatments with brain-acting effect (for example, amitriptyline, acamprosate, and gabapentin) or anti-inflammation/anti-oxidant effect (for example, intra-tympanic dexamethasone injection plus oral melatonin) as the preferable effective treatments for tinnitus without specific or treatable origin. A two-stage dilute acid and steam explosion (SE) pretreatment process was developed and evaluated at pilot scale for ethanol production from cotton gin trash (CGT). Optimal conditions for CGT processing were defined as 1:6 solids to liquids ratio with 9% H2SO4 wt. on solids at 180 °C for 15 min. during stage 1 with ensuing pressed fibres successively exposed to SE at 200 °C for 5 min during stage 2. SE fibres were highly acquiescent to enzyme hydrolysis (76%) in the presence of PEG 6000, yielding 381 g glucose kg-1 fibre. Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) trials validated the selected process option and additional fed-batch SSFs confirmed titres above the minimum 4% ww-1 benchmark for economically viable distillation. The practicality of converting CGT to ethanol was demonstrated at pilot scale with titres above 4% ww-1 and a conversion efficiency of 60% t-1 dry GCT.

Identification of individuals has become an urgent problem for mankind. In the last three decades, STR-based DNA identification has actively evolved along with traditional biometric methods. Nonetheless, single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are now of great interest and a number of relevant SNP panels have been proposed for DNA identification. Here, a simple approach to SNP data digitization that can provide assigning a unique genetic identification number (GIN) to each person is proposed. The key points of this approach are as follows: 1) SNP data are digitized as whole 4-bit boxes in the most convenient binary format, where character "1" (YES) is assigned to revealed nucleotides, and character "0" (NO) to missing nucleotides after SNP-typing; 2) all SNPs should be considered tetra-allelic. Calculations showed that a 72-plex SNP panel is enough to provide the population with unique GINs, which can be represented in digital (binary or hexadecimal) or graphic (linear or two-dimensional) formats. Simple software for SNP data processing and GINs creation in any format was written. It is likely that the national and global GIN databases will facilitate the solution of problems related to identification of individuals or human biological materials. The proposed approach may be extended to other living organisms as well.
