BACKGROUND: The ageing female body is particularly exposed to the social gaze. While it should remain fit and durable as well as attractive and desirable, there is the danger of ridicule through supposedly too youthful or too outlandish performance. Women's clothing practices can conform to social expectations, can circumvent them, can actively protest against them, and possibly change social demands. In every part of the process, i.e., the experience of bodily changes, the experience of social expectations, consumer choices, the practices of clothing and reactions to clothing choices, the body and getting dressed becomes a site of new feelings of vulnerability. OBJECTIVE: This article asks how these vulnerabilities are presented in the clothing practices of older women, are expressed in the materiality of clothes and in the practices of getting dressed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data from a study that followed a situational analysis methodology and used semi-structured interviews and photo elicitation, were re-examined through the lens of vulnerability. RESULTS: Different aspects to vulnerability are presented in this article. Interviewees had to come to terms with bodily changes and made arrangement to the way they dressed that in turn could collide with subjective and social expectations of normative femininity. In this process of acquiescing, new vulnerabilities were produced; however, interviewees developed clothing strategies that provided them with experiences of their own attractiveness. They also had to adapt to changing circumstances to present themselves as fashionable and attractive due to age. CONCLUSION: Practitioners can address feelings of vulnerabilities when talking about gendered clothing practices, for example through biographical work.

The development of anatomy as a scientific undertaking appears to have left little room for religious and cultural input into the conduct of anatomical investigations. This has been brought to the fore by questionnaires regarding the willingness or otherwise of individuals to donate their bodies for dissection, with higher levels of willingness from those without religious affiliations. This has led to the assumption that there is inherent opposition to body donation by those with a religious stance, although there has been little exploration of this. This is increasingly important with growing awareness that anatomy is an international discipline, leading to increasing attention to the religious and cultural contexts within which it is practiced. There is a diversity of responses toward body donation within different countries, as well as by those influenced by Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. Additionally, there are diverse cultural attitudes within Confucianism in Asia, Zulu in Africa, and Maori in New Zealand. Even those within the Christian church are influenced by a variety of values, some of which are in tension, with emphasis on the sacredness of life and the significance of burial being negative toward body donation, with informed consent and altruism pointing in a positive direction. The challenge for anatomists is to understand those within their communities, seek to appreciate their perspectives, and also make known the potential of body donation and dissection for enhancing medical practice and improving the education of future health workers.

Oscillations serve a critical role in organizing biological systems. In the brain, oscillatory coupling is a fundamental mechanism of communication. The possibility that neural oscillations interact directly with slower physiological rhythms (e.g., heart rate, respiration) is largely unexplored and may have important implications for psychological functioning. Oscillations in heart rate, an aspect of heart rate variability (HRV), show remarkably robust associations with psychological health. Mather and Thayer proposed coupling between high-frequency HRV (HF-HRV) and neural oscillations as a mechanism that partially accounts for such relationships. We tested this hypothesis by measuring phase-amplitude coupling between HF-HRV and neural oscillations in 37 healthy adults at rest. Robust coupling was detected in all frequency bands. Granger causality analyses indicated stronger heart-to-brain than brain-to-heart effects in all frequency bands except gamma. These findings suggest that cardiac rhythms play a causal role in modulating neural oscillations, which may have important implications for mental health.

Direct harvesting of energy from moist air will be a promising route to supply electricity for booming wearable and distributed electronics, with the recent rapid development of the moisture-enabled electricity generator (MEG). However, the easy spatial distortion of rigid MEG materials under severe deformation extremely inconveniences the human body with intense physical activity, seriously hindering the desirable applications. Here, an intrinsically stretchable moisture-enabled electricity generator (s-MEG) is developed based on a well-fabricated stretchable functional ionic gel (SIG) with a flexible double-network structure and reversible cross-linking interactions, demonstrating stable electricity output performance even when stretched up to 150% strain and high human body conformality. This SIG exhibits ultrahigh tensile strain (∼600%), and a 1 cm × 1 cm SIG film-based s-MEG can generate a voltage of ∼0.4 V and a current of ∼5.7 µA when absorbing water from humidity air. Based on the strong adhesion and the excellent interface combination of SIG and rough fabric electrodes induced by the fabrication process, s-MEG is able to realize bending or twisting deformation and shows outstanding electricity output stability with ∼90% performance retention after 5000 cycles of bending tests. By connecting s-MEG units in series or parallel, an integrated device of "moisture-powered wristband" is developed to wear on the wrist of humans and drive a flexible sensor for tracking finger motions. Additionally, a comfortable "moisture-powered sheath" based on s-MEGs is created, which can be worn like clothing on human arms to generate energy while walking and flexing the elbow, which is promising in the field of wearable electronics.

Using a wheelchair over uneven terrain generates vibrations of the human body. These vibrations result from mechanical energy impulses transferred from the ground through the wheelchair components to the user's body, which may negatively affect the quality of the wheelchair use and the user's health. This energy can be dissipated through the structure of the wheelchair frame, such as polymer and carbon fiber composites. This article aims to compare a wheelchair with an aluminum alloy frame and a carbon fiber frame in terms of reducing kinematic excitation acting on the user's body. Three wheelchairs were used in the study, one with an aluminum alloy frame (reference) and two innovative ones with composite frames. The user was sitting in the tested wheelchairs and had an accelerometer attached to their forehead. The vibrations were generated by applying impulses to the rear wheels of the wheelchair. The obtained results were analyzed and compared, especially regarding differences in the damping decrement. The research shows that using modern materials in the wheelchair frame has a beneficial effect on vibration damping. Although the frame structure and material did not significantly impact the reduction in the acceleration vector, the material and geometry had a beneficial effect on the short dissipation time of the mechanical energy generated by the kinematic excitation. Research has shown that modern construction materials, especially carbon fiber-reinforced composites, may be an alternative to traditional wheelchair suspension modules, effectively damping vibrations.

PURPOSE: Body donors continue to have an important role in anatomy education in medical schools. Furthermore, the demand for organ transplantation is increasing as life expectancy increases. In Turkey, there are efforts to enable both donations to be made through a single system. These issues were addressed together, and it was aimed to evaluate the level of knowledge and attitudes of medical and law students regarding tissue-organ and body donation. METHODS: A questionnaire consisting of 29 questions was administered to 693 individuals to measure these aspects. Data were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance with Bonferroni correction. Categorical data collected during the study were summarized in terms of frequency and percentage. RESULTS: When asked about their willingness to donate their bodies, 39.4% answered no, 29.5% responded yes, and 31.1% were undecided. Regarding organ donation, 61.8% of the participants expressed willingness, 22.8% were undecided, and 15.4% declined. Notably, there was a significant difference between those who had prior knowledge of organ tissue and body donation and those who did not (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The findings of our research indicate that knowledge about organ tissue and body donation, as well as the inclination to donate, increased as medical education progressed into clinical practice. Additionally, the level of knowledge among university students on this subject was found to be correlated with whether they had received prior training on the topic. It was observed that there is a need to provide more education for students to understand the importance of organ and body donation.

PURPOSE: Under-foot impact loadings can cause serious lower limb injuries in many activities, such as automobile collisions and underbody explosions to military vehicles. The present study aims to compare the biomechanical responses of the mainstream vehicle occupant dummies with the human body lower limb model and analyze their robustness and applicability for assessing lower limb injury risk in under-foot impact loading environments. METHODS: The Hybrid III model, the test device for human occupant restraint (THOR) model, and a hybrid human body model with the human active lower limb model were adopted for under-foot impact analysis regarding different impact velocities and initial lower limb postures. RESULTS: The results show that the 2 dummy models have larger peak tibial axial force and higher sensitivity to the impact velocities and initial postures than the human lower limb model. In particular, the Hybrid III dummy model presented extremely larger peak tibial axial forces than the human lower limb model. In the case of minimal difference in tibial axial force, Hybrid III's tibial axial force (7.5 kN) is still 312.5% that of human active lower limb's (2.4 kN). Even with closer peak tibial axial force values, the biomechanical response curve shapes of the THOR model show significant differences from the human lower limb model. CONCLUSION: Based on the present results, the Hybrid III dummy cannot be used to evaluate the lower limb injury risk in under-foot loading environments. In contrast, potential improvement in ankle biofidelity and related soft tissues of the THOR dummy can be implemented in the future for better applicability.

To provide reference and theoretical guidance for establishing human body dynamics models and studying biomechanical vibration behavior, this study aimed to develop and verify a computational model of a three-dimensional seated human body with detailed anatomical structure under complex biomechanical characteristics to investigate dynamic characteristics and internal vibration behaviors of the human body. Fifty modes of a seated human body were extracted by modal method. The intervertebral disc and head motions under uniaxial white noise excitation (between 0 and 20 Hz at 1.0, 0.5 and 0.5 m/s2 r.m.s. for vertical, fore-aft and lateral direction, respectively) were computed by random response analysis method. It was found that there were many modes of the seated human body in the low-frequency range, and the modes that had a great impact on seated human vibration were mainly distributed below 13 Hz. The responses of different positions of the spine varied greatly under the fore-aft and lateral excitation, but the maximum stress was distributed in the lumbar under different excitations, which could explain why drivers were prone to lower back pain after prolonged driving. Moreover, there was a large vibration coupling between the vertical and fore-aft direction of an upright seated human body, while the vibration couplings between the lateral and other directions were very small. Overall, the study could provide new insights into not only the overall dynamic characteristics of the human body, but also the internal local motion and biomechanical characteristics under different excitations.

OBJECTIVE: Most car occupant fatalities occur in frontal crashes and the thorax is the most frequently injured body region. The objectives of the study were, firstly, to quantify the relation between risk factors (such as speed and occupant age) and rib and sternum fracture injury probability in frontal car crashes, and, secondly, to evaluate whether rib fracture occurrence can predict sternum fractures. METHODS: Weighted German data from 1999-2021 were used to create the injury risk curves to predict both, at least moderate and at least serious, rib and sternum fracture risks. A contingency table for rib and sternum fractures allowed the calculation of sensitivity, specificity, and precision, as well as testing for the association. RESULTS: Elderly occupants (≥65 years old) had increased rib and sternum fracture risk compared to mid aged occupants (18-64 years old). Besides occupant age, delta-V was always and sex sometimes a significant predictor for skeletal thoracic injury. Sternum fractures were more common than rib fractures and more likely to occur at any given delta-V. Sternum fractures occurred often in isolation. Female occupants were at higher risk than males to sustain at least moderate rib and sternum fractures together and sternum fractures in isolation. Rib and sternum fractures were associated, but low sensitivity and precision show that rib fractures do not predict sternum fractures well. CONCLUSIONS: Elderly and female occupants were at the highest risk and should be targeted by thoracic injury criteria and thresholds for frontal crash occupant protection. Rib and sternum fractures were not associated. Therefore, sternum fractures need to be predicted and evaluated separately from rib fractures.

Predicting and understanding thorax injury is fundamental for the assessment and development of safety systems to mitigate injury risk to the increasing and vulnerable aged population. While computational human models have contributed to the understanding of injury biomechanics, contemporary human body models have struggled to predict rib fractures and explain the increased incidence of injury in the aged population. The present study enhanced young and aged human body models (HBMs) by integrating a biofidelic cortical bone constitutive model and population-based bone material properties. The HBMs were evaluated using side impact sled tests assessed using chest compression and number of rib fractures. The increase in thoracic kyphosis and the associated change in rib angle with increasing age, led to increased rib torsional moment increasing the rib shear stress. Coupled with and improved cortical bone constitutive model and aged material properties, the higher resulting shear stress led to an increased number of rib fractures in the aged model. The importance of shear stress resulting from torsional load was further investigated using an isolated rib model. In contrast, HBM chest compression, a common thorax injury-associated metric, was insensitive to the aging factors studied. This study proposes an explanation for the increased incidence of thorax injury with increasing age reported in epidemiological data, and provides an enhanced understanding of human rib mechanics that will benefit assessment and design of future safety systems.

In radio wave hyperthermia therapy, array antenna configuration was mainly studied to generate a small spot at the diseased part. Array antennas have the flexibility in controlling radiation performance, such as spot positions, by using their numerous radiating elements. However, the flexibility is achieved at the expense of antenna structure complexity. On the other hand, a lens antenna can concentrate radio waves into a small spot by forming a lens shape. The simplicity of a lens antenna structure lends itself to easy handling in a practical application. Moreover, the frequency independence of the lens antenna allows for a more flexible selection of hyperthermia therapy frequencies. Therefore, the lens antenna is selected as a focusing antenna in this paper. The lens shaping method and the temperature increment measurement are the main contents of this paper. The designed lens has a diameter of 30 cm, a focusing distance of 30 cm, and a working frequency of 2.45 GHz. A thin lens design method is applied to reduce lens weight. Firstly, the focusing ability of the designed lens is ensured by comparing the spot size results of electromagnetic (EM) simulation with its theoretical value. A spot size of 1.77 cm is obtained in both cases. Next, the temperature increment is examined by EM simulations. The temperature at the 2 cm tumor was increased to 41 °C from the human body temperature of 37 °C by an input power of 10 Watts (W). For the temperature increment measurement, a tumor within human body phantom is utilized and the available input power is reduced to 4 W. The tumor temperature increased from 21.5 °C of room temperature to 24.4 °C, which was captured by a thermal imaging camera. As a result, the functionality of the lens antenna for hyperthermia therapy is verified.

Introduction: We investigated the factors underlying naturalistic action recognition and understanding, as well as the errors occurring during recognition failures. Methods: Participants saw full-light stimuli of ten different whole-body actions presented in three different conditions: as normal videos, as videos with the temporal order of the frames scrambled, and as single static representative frames. After each stimulus presentation participants completed one of two tasks-a forced choice task where they were given the ten potential action labels as options, or a free description task, where they could describe the action performed in each stimulus in their own words. Results: While generally, a combination of form, motion, and temporal information led to the highest action understanding, for some actions form information was sufficient and adding motion and temporal information did not increase recognition accuracy. We also analyzed errors in action recognition and found primarily two different types. Discussion: One type of error was on the semantic level, while the other consisted of reverting to the kinematic level of body part processing without any attribution of semantics. We elaborate on these results in the context of naturalistic action perception.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between body composition and serum visfatin and apelin levels in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS: In this prospective observational study, the differences in body composition, levels of gonadal hormone concentrations, glucose metabolism, apelin, and visfatin were compared between PCOS patients and the control group. PCOS patients were further divided into different subgroups according to different obesity criteria and the differences between serum visfatin and apelin levels in different subgroups were compared. Finally, the correlation of serum visfatin levels and apelin levels with body composition, and metabolism-related indicators in PCOS patients was explored. RESULTS: A total collected 178 cases of PCOS patients and 172 cases of healthy women (control group) between 2020 July and 2021 November. In PCOS patients, their weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist Hip Rate (WHR), Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI), Percent Body Fat (PBF), Fat mass index (FMI), PBF of Arm, PBF of Leg, PBF of the Trunk, Visceral Fat Level (VFL), fasting insulin (FINS), Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) and Luteinizing hormone (LH) were significantly higher than in the control group (all P < 0.001), Percent Skeletal Muscle (PSM), PSM of Leg, and PSM of the Trunk were significantly decreased than in the control group (all P < 0.001). The PCOS patients had significantly higher serum visfatin levels and apelin levels compared with the control group (all P < 0.001). In PBF > 35 % PCOS patients, the apelin and visfatin levels were significantly higher than the PBF ≤ 35 % PCOS patients. In WHR ≥ 0.85 and BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2 PCOS patients, the visfatin levels were significantly higher than the WHR < 0.85 and BMI < 24 kg/m2 PCOS patients. Serum apelin and visfatin positively correlated with BMI level, WHR, FFMI, PBF, FMI, PBF of arms, PBF of legs, PBF of the trunk, VFL, FBG, HOMA-IR index and negatively correlated with PSM, PSM of legs, and PSM of the trunk (all P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with healthy women, Patients with PCOS have an increased fat content in various parts of the body, reduced skeletal muscle content, and are often complicated by metabolic abnormalities. Serum visfatin and apelin correlated not only with obesity, fat mass, and fat distribution but also with muscle mass and distribution. It may be possible to reduce the long-term risk of metabolic disease in PCOS through the monitoring and management of the body composition in PCOS patients or to reflect the therapeutic effect of PCOS.

El objeto de este trabajo es contribuir al desarrollo conceptual de la categoría jurídica del cadáver en razón a la dificultad que representa la dualidad de sujeto–objeto y que eventualmente puede generar una desprotección al mismo. El estudio se limita a las legislaciones de España y Colombia, cuya regulación, además de estar estrechamente relacionada en sus orígenes, es similar en muchos aspectos. La hipótesis sostenida es que el cadáver es una sustancia corpórea que contiene información personal y en virtud de ello, la bioética se convierte en una fuente útil para su tratamiento y regulación.(AU)


L'objecte d'aquest treball és contribuir al desenvolupament conceptual de la categoria jurídica del cadàver en raó a la dificultat que representa la dualitat de subjecte–objectei que, eventualment, pot generar una des protecció a aquest. L'estudi es limita a les legislacions d'Espanya i Colòmbia, que a més d'estar estretament relacionada en els seus orígens, és similar en molts aspectes. La hipòtesi sostinguda és que el cadàver és una substància corpòria que conté informació personal i en virtut d'això, la bioètica es converteix en una font útil per al seu tractament i regulació.(AU)


The purpose of this work is to contribute to the conceptual development of the legal category of the corpse because of the difficulty represented by the duality of subject–object, which can eventually generate a lack of protection for the corpse. The study is limited to the legislation of Spain and Colombia, whose regulations, in addition to being closely related in their origins, are similar in many aspects. The hypothesis sustained is that the corpse is a corporeal substance that contains personal informationand by this, bioethics becomes a useful source of bioethical principles for its treatment and regulation.(AU)

RESUMEN

A platform-tolerant RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) tag is presented, designed to operate across the entire RFID band. This tag utilizes a small Artificial Magnetic Conductor (AMC) structure as a shielding element for an ungrounded RFID tag antenna. It can be easily mounted on various surfaces, including low permittivity dielectric materials, metal objects, or even attached to the human body for wearable applications. The key features of this RFID tag include its ability to be tuned within the worldwide RFID band, achieving a maximum theoretical read range of over 11 m. Despite its advanced capabilities, the design emphasizes simplicity and cost-effective manufacturing. The design and simulations were conducted using CST Studio Suite.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of different seatbelt geometries and load-limiting levels on the kinematics and injury risks of a reclined occupant during a whole-sequence frontal crash scenario, using simulations with the Active SAFER Human Body Model (Active SHBM). METHODS: The Active SHBM was positioned in a reclined position (50°) on a semi-rigid seat model. A whole-sequence frontal crash scenario, an 11 m/s2 Automated Emergency Braking (AEB) phase followed by a frontal crash at 50 km/h, was simulated. The seatbelt geometry was varied using either a B-pillar-integrated (BPI) or Belt-in-seat (BIS) design. The shoulder belt load-limiting level of the BPI seatbelt was also varied to achieve either similar shoulder belt forces (BPI_Lower_LL) or comparable upper body displacements (BPI_Higher_LL) to the BIS seatbelt. Kinematics of different body regions and seatbelt forces were compared. The risks of sustaining a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), two or more fractured ribs (NFR2+), and lumbar spine vertebral fractures were also compared. RESULTS: During the pre-crash phase, head, first thoracic vertebra, and first lumbar vertebra displacements were greater with the BPI seatbelt than with the BIS, mainly due to the lack of initial contact between the torso and the seatbelt. Pelvis pre-crash displacements, however, remained consistent across seatbelt types. In the in-crash phase, variations in shoulder belt forces were directly influenced by the different load-limiting levels of the shoulder belt. The mTBI (around 20%) and NFR2+ (around 70-100%) risks were amplified with BPI seatbelts, especially at higher load-limiting force. However, the BPI design demonstrated reduced lumbar spine fracture risks (from 30% to 1%). CONCLUSIONS: The BIS seatbelt appears promising, as seen with the reduced mTBI and NFR2+ risks, for ensuring the protection of reclined occupants in frontal crashes. However, additional solutions, such as lap belt load limiting, should be considered to reduce lumbar spine loading.

Nanomechanical sensors have gained significant attention as promising platforms for artificial olfaction. Since sorption kinetic parameters that can be estimated from the sensing signals of nanomechanical sensors reflect the chemical and physicochemical interactions between the odorant and receptor material, the parameters can be utilized for the direct discrimination of each odorant. In this study, we demonstrated the discrimination of 20 vapors, including hydrocarbons, alcohols, organic acids, ketones, and aldehydes, which are reported as human body odor components, using the parameters extracted in the analytical solution of nanomechanical sensors based on sorption kinetics with viscoelastic behaviors. By using one of the specific nanomechanical sensors─membrane-type surface stress sensor─as a sensing unit, we successfully discriminated trans-2-nonenal known as an aging marker from other saturated aldehydes along with quantifying their concentrations.

Volumetric representation is a technique used to express 3D objects in various fields, such as medical applications. On the other hand, tomography images for reconstructing volumetric data have limited utilization because they contain personal information. Existing GAN-based medical image generation techniques can produce virtual tomographic images for volume reconstruction while preserving the patient's privacy. Nevertheless, these images often do not consider vertical correlations between the adjacent slices, leading to erroneous results in 3D reconstruction. Furthermore, while volume generation techniques have been introduced, they often focus on surface modeling, making it challenging to represent the internal anatomical features accurately. This paper proposes volumetric imitation GAN (VI-GAN), which imitates a human anatomical model to generate volumetric data. The primary goal of this model is to capture the attributes and 3D structure, including the external shape, internal slices, and the relationship between the vertical slices of the human anatomical model. The proposed network consists of a generator for feature extraction and up-sampling based on a 3D U-Net and ResNet structure and a 3D-convolution-based LFFB (local feature fusion block). In addition, a discriminator utilizes 3D convolution to evaluate the authenticity of the generated volume compared to the ground truth. VI-GAN also devises reconstruction loss, including feature and similarity losses, to converge the generated volumetric data into a human anatomical model. In this experiment, the CT data of 234 people were used to assess the reliability of the results. When using volume evaluation metrics to measure similarity, VI-GAN generated a volume that realistically represented the human anatomical model compared to existing volume generation methods.

Historically, both donated bodies and unclaimed bodies have been the sources of human bodies for anatomy dissection globally with the latter discouraged for ethical reasons. Ghana lacks well-established body-donation programs, thus relying heavily on unclaimed bodies. Medical doctors benefit foremost from human bodies in their training and therefore should have a better disposition toward body bequeathal. This study assessed the perception, knowledge, and attitude of medical doctors in a Ghanaian institution toward body donation. As the first Ghanaian study on the subject, it provides the foundation for systematic study of the subject in Ghana. An internet-based questionnaire was administered to volunteering medical doctors requesting information on their perception of, knowledge of, and attitude toward whole-body donation. Data were summarized as frequencies. The 200 respondents comprised 1 consultant, 4 specialists, 14 residents, 63 medical officers, and 118 house officers. About 194 (97.0%) were familiar with body donation while 6 (3.0%) were not. Also, 39 (19.5%) were willing to donate their bodies, 98 (49.0%) were unwilling, and 63 (31.5%) undecided. Religion, culture, mishandling of bodies, and lack of awareness were barriers to body donation. Finally, 178 (89.0%) viewed human body dissection as relevant and should remain as part of medical curriculum. Doctors were aware of body donation though only few were willing to donate. Cultural and religious factors were major hindrances to body donation for anatomy education and research, though they were willing to persuade others to participate. Deliberate public education on the subject is required to grow body donation in Ghana.
