RESUMEN

As autonomous driving advances, autonomous vehicles will share the road with human drivers. This requires autonomous vehicles to adhere to human traffic laws under safe conditions. Simultaneously, when confronted with dangerous situations, autonomous driving should also possess the capability to deviate from traffic laws to ensure safety. However, current autonomous vehicles primarily prioritize safety and collision avoidance in their decision-making and planning. This may lead to misunderstandings and distrust from human drivers in mixed traffic flow, and even accidents. To address this, this paper proposes a decoupled hierarchical framework for compliance safety decision-making. The framework primarily consists of two layers: the decision-making layer and the motion planning layer. In the decision-making layer, a candidate behavior set is constructed based on the scenario, and a dual layer admission assessment is utilized to filter out unsafe and non-compliant behaviors from the candidate sets. Subsequently, the optimal behavior is selected as the decision behavior according to the designed evaluation metrics. The decision-making layer ensures that the vehicle can meet lane safety requirements and comply with static traffic laws. In the motion planning layer, the surrounding vehicles and the road are modeled as safety potential fields and traffic laws potential fields. Combining the optimal decision behavior, they are incorporated into the cost function of the model predictive control to achieve compliant and safe trajectory planning. The planning layer ensures that the vehicle meets trajectory safety requirements and complies with dynamic traffic laws under safe conditions. Finally, four typical scenarios are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results indicate that the proposed method can ensure compliance in safe conditions while also temporarily deviating from traffic laws in emergency situations to ensure safety.

Active school travel (AST) is an effective approach for increasing children's physical activity and independent mobility, but policy supporting AST is lacking. This study aims to explore children's experiences of AST to inform a policy recommendation. Photovoice methodology with a qualitative approach was applied, with children taking pictures on their way to school. This was followed by focus groups where the children explored their experiences of AST based on their photos. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results show that the children valued independent mobility and wanted to be involved in decisions about their travels; they also expressed feelings of increased responsibility and personal growth as a consequence. Although the children recognized areas of improvement regarding infrastructure, especially regarding heavy traffic that jeopardized travel safety, they continued using AST. Finally, the children talked about the value of the health and environmental benefits of AST. Opportunities for friendship, play, and making decisions about their own time were highlighted as important incentives. The benefits from AST are many for children, as well as for society. The result has informed policy recommendations for AST, and the children's input will be used to communicate the recommendations. Listening to the voices of children could be a steppingstone toward forming future healthy mobility initiatives. In that process, it is key to include children's perspectives when formulating the AST policy for successful adoption and implementation.

The growing prominence of artificial intelligence (AI) in mobile health (mHealth) has given rise to a distinct subset of apps that provide users with diagnostic information using their inputted health status and symptom information-AI-powered symptom checker apps (AISympCheck). While these apps may potentially increase access to health care, they raise consequential ethical and legal questions. This paper will highlight notable concerns with AI usage in the health care system, further entrenchment of preexisting biases in the health care system and issues with professional accountability. To provide an in-depth analysis of the issues of bias and complications of professional obligations and liability, we focus on 2 mHealth apps as examples-Babylon and Ada. We selected these 2 apps as they were both widely distributed during the COVID-19 pandemic and make prominent claims about their use of AI for the purpose of assessing user symptoms. First, bias entrenchment often originates from the data used to train AI systems, causing the AI to replicate these inequalities through a "garbage in, garbage out" phenomenon. Users of these apps are also unlikely to be demographically representative of the larger population, leading to distorted results. Second, professional accountability poses a substantial challenge given the vast diversity and lack of regulation surrounding the reliability of AISympCheck apps. It is unclear whether these apps should be subject to safety reviews, who is responsible for app-mediated misdiagnosis, and whether these apps ought to be recommended by physicians. With the rapidly increasing number of apps, there remains little guidance available for health professionals. Professional bodies and advocacy organizations have a particularly important role to play in addressing these ethical and legal gaps. Implementing technical safeguards within these apps could mitigate bias, AIs could be trained with primarily neutral data, and apps could be subject to a system of regulation to allow users to make informed decisions. In our view, it is critical that these legal concerns are considered throughout the design and implementation of these potentially disruptive technologies. Entrenched bias and professional responsibility, while operating in different ways, are ultimately exacerbated by the unregulated nature of mHealth.

In this paper, we expended the concept of neutrosophic sets (NS) by introducing the idea α,ß,γ- neutrosophic set (α,ß,γ- NS). The existing models under conventional NSs, fail to adequately address the management of membership degree influence during the aggregation process. While the proposed framework manages the influence of membership degree (MD), indeterminacy membership degree (IMD), and non-membership degree (NMD) by incorporating parameters α, ß, and γ. Furthermore, we defined some fundamental operational laws for α,ß,γ- NSs and introduced a series of aggregation operators (AOs) to effectively combine α,ß,γ- neutrosophic information. Based on these AOs, a new Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) model is proposed for solving real-life decision-making (DM) challenges. An illustrative case study is presented to showcase the effectiveness of the proposed model in selecting an optimal location for a software office. The article concludes by validating the proposed model's authenticity and effectiveness through a comparative analysis with existing approaches.

INTRODUCTION: Firearms now represent the leading cause of death in U.S. children. Therefore, this study aimed to determine if state-level rates of gun ownership, guns in circulation, and strictness of firearm-related laws are related to firearm-related mortality among both juveniles and overall populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: State firearm mortality rates among the juvenile and overall populations were obtained from 2010 to 2020. The number of weapons registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and federal firearms licensees for each state were also recorded. Giffords Law Center Scorecard Rankings, a relative measure of the restrictiveness of each state's gun laws, were also collected. Unadjusted linear regressions modeled the relationships between firearm-associated mortality and ATF-registered weapons, federal firearm licensees, Giffords Center rankings, and gun ownership rates. Multivariable (adjusted) analyses were performed to control for poverty, unemployment, and poor mental health. RESULTS: Unadjusted analyses demonstrated that higher gun ownership rates and more lenient gun laws were associated with increased firearm-associated mortality among juveniles. Similarly, these measures as well as increased ATF-registered weapons and ATF federal firearm licensees were associated with increased firearm mortality in the overall population. In the adjusted analyses, more ATF-registered weapons, more ATF federal firearm licensees, higher gun ownership rates, and more lenient firearm laws were associated with increased firearm-related mortality in the overall population, while increased gun ownership and higher Giffords Center rankings were associated with increased firearm-associated mortality in the pediatric population. CONCLUSIONS: To reduce the toll of gun violence in the United States, policymakers should focus on implementing more restrictive firearm laws and reducing the prevalence of guns in their communities.

OBJECTIVE: Distracted driving is a leading cause of motor vehicle crashes, and cell phone use is a major source of in-vehicle distraction. Many states in the United States have enacted cell phone use laws to regulate drivers' cell phone use behavior to enhance traffic safety. Numerous studies have examined the effects of such laws on drivers' cell phone use behavior based on self-reported and roadside observational data. However, little was known about who actually violated the laws at the enforcement level. This study sought to uncover the demographic characteristics of drivers cited for cell phone use while driving and whether these characteristics changed over time since the enactment of cell phone laws. METHODS: We acquired useable traffic citation data for 7 states in the United States from 2010 to 2020 and performed descriptive and regression analyses. RESULTS: Male drivers were cited more for cell phone use while driving. Handheld and texting bans were associated with a greater proportion of cited drivers aged 40 and above, compared to texting-only bans. Trends in the citations issued based on drivers' age group following the enactment of different cell phone laws were also uncovered. The proportion of citations issued to drivers aged 60 and above increased over time but the temporal trend remained insignificant when population effect was considered. CONCLUSIONS: This study examined the demographic characteristics of drivers cited for cell phone use while driving in selected states with texting-only bans or handheld and texting bans. The results reveal policy-based differences in trends in the proportion of citations issued to drivers in different age groups.

This study explores the relationship between Recreational Marijuana Laws (RMLs) and intimate partner violence (IPV). While marijuana is often considered harmless, the existing medical literature reveals both positive and negative impacts of its active ingredient on brain function. Utilizing a difference-in-difference methodology spanning 2006-2016 across 39 states, we find that RMLs produce a 20 percent increase in IPV incidents per 100,000 individuals, which appears to be mediated through mental health issues and binge drinking. These findings highlight the likely need for preventive and proactive policies to address the complex interplay of marijuana, RMLs, and IPV.

Lead poisoning is an important global conservation problem for many species of wildlife, especially raptors. Despite the increasing number of individual studies and regional reviews of lead poisoning of raptors, it has been over a decade since this information has been compiled into a comprehensive global review. Here, we summarize the state of knowledge of lead poisoning of raptors, we review developments in manufacturing of non-lead ammunition, the use of which can reduce the most pervasive source of lead these birds encounter, and we compile data on voluntary and regulatory mitigation options and their associated sociological context. We support our literature review with case studies of mitigation actions, largely provided by the conservation practitioners who study or manage these efforts. Our review illustrates the growing awareness and understanding of lead exposure of raptors, and it shows that the science underpinning this understanding has expanded considerably in recent years. We also show that the political and social appetite for managing lead ammunition appears to vary substantially across administrative regions, countries, and continents. Improved understanding of the drivers of this variation could support more effective mitigation of lead exposure of wildlife. This review also shows that mitigation strategies are likely to be most effective when they are outcome driven, consider behavioural theory, local cultures, and environmental conditions, effectively monitor participation, compliance, and levels of raptor exposure, and support both environmental and human health.

Unicellular organisms such as yeast can survive in very different environments, thanks to a polysaccharide wall that reinforces their extracellular membrane. This wall is not a static structure, as it is expected to be dynamically remodeled according to growth stage, division cycle, environmental osmotic pressure and ageing. It is therefore of great interest to study the mechanics of these organisms, but they are more difficult to study than other mammalian cells, in particular because of their small size (radius of a few microns) and their lack of an adhesion machinery. Using flat cantilevers, we perform compression experiments on single yeast cells (S. cerevisiae) on poly-L-lysine-coated grooved glass plates, in the limit of small deformation using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Thanks to a careful decomposition of force-displacement curves, we extract local scaling exponents that highlight the non-stationary characteristic of the yeast behavior upon compression. Our multi-scale nonlinear analysis of the AFM force-displacement curves provides evidence for non-stationary scaling laws. We propose to model these phenomena based on a two-component elastic system, where each layer follows a different scaling law..

The global push for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 requires countries to adopt sustainable energy sources, address energy poverty and promote energy security. Nigeria is grappling with an energy crisis, and the recently enacted Climate Change Act 2021 offers the prospect of addressing this while advancing energy sustainability. The study evaluates the Act's potential in promoting energy security and global net-zero carbon emissions. Nigeria faces challenges in recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and combating climate change, prompting countries to take domestic and international measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Through doctrinal legal research and conceptual analysis, the study examines Nigeria's Climate Change Act, proposing solutions to enhance its commitment to global net-zero carbon emissions. It conducts a comparative legal analysis of climate change frameworks in Kenya, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, providing insights and suggesting reforms to Nigeria's Act for Energy Security. While the existing laws are adequate, weak enforcement by regulatory agencies and a lack of political will hinder compliance. Public awareness regarding individual contributions to climate change is also lacking. The study recommends increased funding for regulatory institutions and proactive public awareness. Complying with the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goal 13 is vital for a sustainable energy future.

Many families of adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities in India experience difficulty in accessing services/supports, due to lack of awareness/knowledge of disability rights/laws and available services, and in accessing the services. There remains insufficient research on the information needs of these caregivers and on designing interventions that aim to increase their awareness/knowledge about human rights and supports/services. A strengths-based mixed methods needs assessment was conducted to understand the information needs of these family caregivers. Results showed that caregivers ≥50 years had significantly higher information needs than younger caregivers. Specifically, caregivers with no proficiency in English needed more information on the available services for the care recipients (n = 100). Qualitative results showed that very few caregivers had any awareness or access to information on human rights, disability-related laws/policies or available supports/services (n = 15). Study findings underscore the government's role in improving awareness-raising initiatives and imparting the information in multiple Indian languages.

The filling efficiency during the hot embossing process at micro scale is essential for micro-component replication. The presence of the unfilled area is often due to the inadequate behavior law applied to the embossed materials. This research consists of the identification of viscoplastic law (two-layer viscoplastic model) of polymers and the optimization of processing parameters. Mechanical tests have been performed for two polymers at 20 °C and 30 °C above their glass transition temperature. The viscoplastic parameters are characterized based on stress-strain curves from the compression tests. The influences of imposed displacement, temperature, and friction on mold filling are investigated. The processing parameters are optimized to achieving the complete filling of micro cavities. The replication of a micro-structured cavity has been effectuated using this process and the experimental observations validate the results in the simulation, which confirms the efficiency of the proposed numerical approach.

Gregor Mendel developed the principles of segregation and independent assortment in the mid-1800s based on his detailed analysis of several traits in pea plants. Those principles, now called Mendel's laws, in fact, explain the behavior of genes and alleles during meiosis and are now understood to underlie "Mendelian inheritance" of a wide range of traits and diseases across organisms. When asked to give examples of inheritance that do NOT follow Mendel's laws, in other words, examples of non-Mendelian inheritance, students sometimes list incomplete dominance, codominance, multiple alleles, sex-linked traits, and multigene traits and cite as their sources the Khan Academy, Wikipedia, and other online sites. Against this background, the goals of this Perspective are to (1) explain to students, healthcare workers, and other stakeholders why the examples above, in fact, display Mendelian inheritance, as they obey Mendel's laws of segregation and independent assortment, even though they do not produce classic Mendelian phenotypic ratios and (2) urge individuals with an intimate knowledge of genetic principles to monitor the accuracy of learning resources and work with us and those resources to correct information that is misleading.

BACKGROUND: The Nigerian Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) 2008 enacted prohibitive laws against child streetism. However, in metropolises like Ibadan, there is a growing epidemic of street children, particularly the category with existing family ties known as "children on the streets". Children on the street come from home daily to engage in economic-oriented activities on the streets and return home to their families at night time. OBJECTIVE: We focused on perceptions of formal responses to the problem of child streetism in Ibadan. METHODS: This was qualitative research. Participants were selected from each of the five urban LGA of Ibadan, purposively and by snowball technique. In-depth Interviews (IDI) were conducted, audio-recorded and transcribed. Framework analysis of data was supported by ATLASTi version 22. RESULTS: Fifty-three (53) interviews were conducted including IDI with ten (10) child-welfare officers, ten (10) street shop owners, eleven (11) children on the street, and ten (10) pairs of parent-child dyads. Two themes emerged including governmental shortcomings with six subthemes and suboptimal governmental interventions with four subthemes. Child streetism in Ibadan is a consequence of the State's failed education systems, inadequate children's vocational and rehabilitation programs, lax child welfare laws, lack of empowerment of skilled children, and poor implementation of the policy on ideal family size. Interventions that were existing but sub-optimal included communitybased child welfare programs, parental poverty alleviation, public sensitisation and child welfare monitoring programmes. CONCLUSION: There is an urgent need to update, enforce laws, and amalgamate efforts against child streetism in Ibadan.

Cependant, dans des métropoles comme Ibadan, il existe une épidémie croissante d'enfants des rues, en particulier la catégorie ayant des liens familiaux existants connue sous le nom d'"enfants des rues". Les enfants des rues viennent de chez eux tous les jours pour participer à des activités orientées vers l'économie dans les rues et rentrent chez eux auprès de leurs familles le soir. OBJECTIF: Nous nous sommes concentrés sur les perceptions des réponses formelles au problème du travail des enfants dans la rue à Ibadan. MÉTHODES: Il s'agissait d'une recherche qualitative. Les participants ont été sélectionnés dans chacun des cinq LGA urbains d'Ibadan, de manière délibérée et par la technique de la boule de neige. Des entretiens approfondis (IDI) ont été réalisés, enregistrés et retranscrits. L'analyse thématique des données a été soutenue par ATLAS-Ti version 22. RÉSULTATS: Cinquante-trois (53) entretiens ont été menés, comprenant des IDI avec dix (10) agents de protection de l'enfance, dix (10) propriétaires de magasins de rue, onze (11) enfants des rues et dix (10) paires de dyades parent-enfant. Deux thèmes ont émergé, comprenant des lacunes gouvernementales avec six sous-thèmes et des interventions gouvernementales suboptimales avec quatre sous-thèmes. Le travail des enfants dans la rue à Ibadan est une conséquence des systèmes éducatifs défaillants de l'État, des programmes de formation et de réadaptation insuffisants pour les enfants, des lois laxistes sur la protection de l'enfance, du manque d'autonomisation des enfants qualifiés et de la mauvaise mise en œuvre de la politique sur la taille idéale de la famille. Les interventions existantes mais suboptimales comprenaient des programmes communautaires de protection de l'enfance, l'alleviation de la pauvreté des parents, la sensibilisation du public et les programmes de suivi de la protection de l'enfance. CONCLUSION: Il est urgent de mettre à jour, d'appliquer les lois et de regrouper les efforts contre le travail des enfants dans la rue à Ibadan. Urban open spaces (UOS) are crucial for urban life, offering benefits across individual and societal levels. However, the understanding of the systematic dynamic of UOS scaling with city size and its potential non-linear performance remains a limited clarity area. This study bridges this gap by integrating urban scaling laws with remote sensing data from 1990 to 2020, creating a framework to analyze UOS trends in China. Our findings reveal that UOS growth is sub-linear scaling with city size, exhibiting economies of scale with scaling exponents between 0.55 and 0.65 and suggesting potential shortages. The distribution structure of UOS across cities is becoming increasingly balanced, as indicated by the rising Zipf's slope from 0.66 to 0.88. Southeastern coastal cities outperform, highlighting spatial variations and path dependency in UOS development. Additionally, using metrics of Scale-adjusted metropolitan indicator (SAMI) and the ratio of open space consumption to population growth rates (OCRPGR), we observe a trend towards more coordinated development between UOS and population, with a declining proportion of uncoordinated cities. Our long-term, large sample coverage study of UOS in China may offer positive significance for urban ecological planning and management in similar rapidly urbanizing countries, contributing to critical insights for quantifying and monitoring urban sustainable development.

BACKGROUND: Up to 50% of antibiotic prescriptions for upper respiratory infections (URIs) are inappropriate. Clinical decision support (CDS) systems to mitigate unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions have been implemented into electronic health records, but their use by providers has been limited. OBJECTIVE: As a delegation protocol, we adapted a validated electronic health record-integrated clinical prediction rule (iCPR) CDS-based intervention for registered nurses (RNs), consisting of triage to identify patients with low-acuity URI followed by CDS-guided RN visits. It was implemented in February 2022 as a randomized controlled stepped-wedge trial in 43 primary and urgent care practices within 4 academic health systems in New York, Wisconsin, and Utah. While issues were pragmatically addressed as they arose, a systematic assessment of the barriers to implementation is needed to better understand and address these barriers. METHODS: We performed a retrospective case study, collecting quantitative and qualitative data regarding clinical workflows and triage-template use from expert interviews, study surveys, routine check-ins with practice personnel, and chart reviews over the first year of implementation of the iCPR intervention. Guided by the updated CFIR (Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research), we characterized the initial barriers to implementing a URI iCPR intervention for RNs in ambulatory care. CFIR constructs were coded as missing, neutral, weak, or strong implementation factors. RESULTS: Barriers were identified within all implementation domains. The strongest barriers were found in the outer setting, with those factors trickling down to impact the inner setting. Local conditions driven by COVID-19 served as one of the strongest barriers, impacting attitudes among practice staff and ultimately contributing to a work infrastructure characterized by staff changes, RN shortages and turnover, and competing responsibilities. Policies and laws regarding scope of practice of RNs varied by state and institutional application of those laws, with some allowing more clinical autonomy for RNs. This necessitated different study procedures at each study site to meet practice requirements, increasing innovation complexity. Similarly, institutional policies led to varying levels of compatibility with existing triage, rooming, and documentation workflows. These workflow conflicts were compounded by limited available resources, as well as an implementation climate of optional participation, few participation incentives, and thus low relative priority compared to other clinical duties. CONCLUSIONS: Both between and within health care systems, significant variability existed in workflows for patient intake and triage. Even in a relatively straightforward clinical workflow, workflow and cultural differences appreciably impacted intervention adoption. Takeaways from this study can be applied to other RN delegation protocol implementations of new and innovative CDS tools within existing workflows to support integration and improve uptake. When implementing a system-wide clinical care intervention, considerations must be made for variability in culture and workflows at the state, health system, practice, and individual levels. Dry-cured hams contain abundant bioactive peptides with significant potential for the development of functional foods. However, the limited bioavailability of food-derived bioactive peptides has hindered their utilization in health food development. Moreover, there is insufficient regulatory information regarding bioactive peptides and related products globally. This review summarizes diverse bioactive peptides derived from dry-cured ham and by-products originating from various countries and regions. The bioactivity, preparation techniques, bioavailability, and metabolic stability of these bioactive peptides are described, as well as the legal and regulatory frameworks in various countries. The primary objectives of this review are to dig deeper into the functionality of dry-cured ham and provide theoretical support for the commercialization of bioactive peptides from food sources, especially the dry-cured ham.

Policy Points Opioid treatment agreements (OTAs) are controversial because of the lack of evidence that their use reduces opioid-related harms and the potential risks they pose of stigmatizing patients and undermining the clinician-patient relationship. Even so, their use is now required in most jurisdictions, and their use is influencing the outcomes of civil and criminal lawsuits. More research is needed to evaluate how OTAs are implemented given existing requirements. If additional research does not resolve the current level of uncertainty regarding OTA benefits, then policymakers in jurisdictions where they are required should consider eliminating OTA mandates or providing flexibility in the legal requirements to make room for clinicians and health care institutions to implement best practices. CONTEXT: Opioid treatment agreements (OTAs) are documents that clinicians present to patients when prescribing opioids that describe the risks of opioids and specify requirements that patients must meet to receive their medication. Notwithstanding a lack of evidence that OTAs effectively mitigate opioids' risks, professional organizations recommend that they be implemented, and jurisdictions increasingly require them. We sought to identify the jurisdictions that require OTAs, how OTAs might affect the outcomes of lawsuits that arise when things go wrong, and instances in which the law permits flexibility for clinicians and health care institutions to adopt best practices. METHODS: We surveyed the laws and regulations of all 50 states and the District of Columbia to identify which jurisdictions require the use of OTAs, the circumstances in which OTA use is mandatory, and the terms OTAs must include (if any). We also surveyed criminal and civil judicial decisions in which OTAs were discussed as evidence on which a court relied to make its decision to determine how OTA use influences litigation outcomes. FINDINGS: Results show that a slight majority (27) of jurisdictions now require OTAs. With one exception, the jurisdictions' requirements for OTA use are triggered at least in part by long-term prescribing. There is otherwise substantial variation and flexibility within OTA requirements. Results also show that even in jurisdictions where OTA use is not required by statute or regulation, OTA use can inform courts' reasoning in lawsuits involving patients or clinicians. Sometimes, but not always, OTA use legally protects clinicians from liability. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that OTA use is entwined with legal obligations in various ways. Clinicians and health care institutions should identify ways for OTAs to enhance clinician-patient relationships and patient care within the bounds of relevant legal requirements and risks.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To prevent the incarceration and influence outcomes when criminal culpability is linked to postpartum psychosis. METHODS: Infanticide, neonaticide and filicide are most often linked with postpartum psychosis, which affects 1-2 women per 1,000 births or 4,000 women each year in the United States. Multiple genetic, hormonal and psychosocial factors surrounding childbirth result in a 1 to 4% risk of infanticide in women with postpartum psychosis. The authors seek to increase awareness of postpartum psychosis and postpartum depression in state legislatures. Others are working to have it recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as a specific illness. Specific postpartum legislation for those charged with crimes related to maternal mental illness is necessary. RESULTS: In Illinois, the very first criminal law in the nation recognizing the pernicious effects of this illness went into effect in 2018. The authors and others are attempting to cause similar or broader legislation to be brought in other states. Several women have been released from extended incarceration utilizing this law. CONCLUSIONS: This temporary mental illness can lead to tragic outcomes when hospitalization and crisis intervention is delayed or the illness is misdiagnosed. The legal/judicial system has not utilized the growing body of scientific developments that medical researchers have discovered in recent decades. The lack of a unique diagnostic classification in the DSM and the lack of postpartum criminal laws, lead to mentally ill mothers in the U.S. receiving excessively harsh sentences when prosecuted, evidenced both in trial and sentencing.
