RESUMEN

The selection of the appropriate biomonitor species is a crucial criterion for biomonitoring on a broad spatial scale. Mosses Hypnum cupressiforme and Brachythecium spp. and lichen Evernia prunastri were sampled at 22 remote sites over Serbia aiming interspecies comparison of their bioconcentration capacities. The concentration of 16 potentially toxic elements (PTEs), Al, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, P, Pb, S, Sr, V, and Zn, was measured in the samples. Between the co-located mosses, linear regression analysis (type II) showed significant determination coefficients only for a couple of the elements (Cd and S), while for H. cupressiforme vs. lichen, significant regression lines were obtained for a broader set of elements (Ba, Cd, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Sr). The ratio of the PTEs in the mosses discovered higher concentrations in H. cupressiforme than in another moss at some sites and vice versa at other sites. According to the PTE ratios, H. cupressiforme accumulated much more element content than the lichen, but followed a similar spatial pattern. In addition, principal component analysis (PCA) pointed out a different grouping of the PTEs depending on the species tested. The poor correlation of the moss-moss data is perhaps because several species of the genus Brachythecium were sampled, which possibly influenced the average genus accumulation capacity. In addition, morphological features of the mosses (concave vs. flat leaflets, creeping vs. cushiony life form) presumably delegate differences in PTE accumulation. To conclude, it should be careful with using more biomonitor species, even of the same genus, within the same study.

Over the past decade and a half, dynamic functional imaging has revealed low-dimensional brain connectivity measures, identified potential common human spatial connectivity states, tracked the transition patterns of these states, and demonstrated meaningful transition alterations in disorders and over the course of development. Recently, researchers have begun to analyze these data from the perspective of dynamic systems and information theory in the hopes of understanding how these dynamics support less easily quantified processes, such as information processing, cortical hierarchy, and consciousness. Little attention has been paid to the effects of psychiatric disease on these measures, however. We begin to rectify this by examining the complexity of subject trajectories in state space through the lens of information theory. Specifically, we identify a basis for the dynamic functional connectivity state space and track subject trajectories through this space over the course of the scan. The dynamic complexity of these trajectories is assessed along each dimension of the proposed basis space. Using these estimates, we demonstrate that schizophrenia patients display substantially simpler trajectories than demographically matched healthy controls and that this drop in complexity concentrates along specific dimensions. We also demonstrate that entropy generation in at least one of these dimensions is linked to cognitive performance. Overall, the results suggest great value in applying dynamic systems theory to problems of neuroimaging and reveal a substantial drop in the complexity of schizophrenia patients' brain function.

PROBLEM: Midwives are susceptible to burnout due to the physically and emotionally demanding nature of their job. Burnout is an occupational phenomenon with far-reaching consequences. AIM: This study aimed to assess the magnitude of burnout and predictors among midwives working at public hospitals in northwest Ethiopia. METHODS: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from February 7 to April 30, 2022. A simple random sampling method was employed to include 640 study participants. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire, entered into Epi-data 4.6 software, and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. A multivariable linear regression analysis model was fitted to identify factors contributing to midwives' burnout. FINDINGS: The overall prevalence of midwives' burnout was 55.3 % (95 % CI = 51.7-58.9). The prevalence of personal, work-related, and client-related burnout was 58.3 %, 60.3 %, and 55.5 %, respectively. Factors that were significantly associated with burnout includes workplace violence (ß = 5.02, CI: 2.90, 7.13), not receiving training (ß = 4.32 CI: 1.81, 6.80), being exposed to blood and body fluids or needle stick injuries (ß = 5.13 CI: 3.12, 7.13), low superior support (ß = 5.13 CI: 1.94, 5.30), working in tertiary hospitals (ß = 12.77 CI: 9.48, 16.06), and job rotation of six months or less (ß = 16.75, CI: 13.12, 20.39). CONCLUSION: This study found that the prevalence of burnout among midwives was significantly high. Addressing burnout requires implementing effective burnout prevention measures including enhancing management support, offering professional training, creating a conducive working environment, and adhering to standard precautions.

Based on the ozone (O3) monitoring data of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) from 2015 to 2022 and the reanalysis of meteorological data, the impact of meteorological conditions on the annual variation and trends of the maximum daily 8-hour average O3 concentration (MDA8-O3) were quantified using multiple linear regression (MLR) and LMG methods. The results indicated that the MLR model constructed using meteorological parameters from individual months in autumn better simulated the variation in MDA8-O3 compared to that in the model built using meteorological parameters from the entire autumn season. The combined influence of total cloud cover, relative humidity, 2 m maximum temperature, and 850 hPa zonal wind led to a reduction of 34.1 µg·m-3 in MAD8-O3 in 2020 compared to that in 2019, with contributions of 31.3%, 45.2%, 15.8%, and 6.7%, respectively. The observed trends of MDA8-O3 in the PRD for September, October, November, and the autumn season during 2015-2022 were 7.3, 5.2, 4.8, and 5.8 µg·ï¼ˆm3·a)-1, respectively. Among these, the trends driven by meteorological factors were 3.6, 2.4, 2.4, and 3.1 µg·ï¼ˆm3·a)-1. Overall, meteorological conditions contributed 53.4% to the variations in autumn MDA8-O3 in the PRD from 2015 to 2022.

Heart failure (HF) is defined as the inability of the heart to meet body oxygen demand requiring an elevation in left ventricular filling pressures (LVP) to compensate. LVP increase can be assessed in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, but this procedure is invasive and time-consuming to the extent that physicians rather rely on non-invasive diagnostic tools. In this work, we assess the feasibility to develop a novel machine-learning (ML) approach to predict clinically relevant LVP indices. Synchronized invasive (pressure-volume tracings) and non-invasive signals (ECG, pulse oximetry, and cardiac sounds) were collected from anesthetized, closed-chest Göttingen minipigs. Animals were either healthy or had HF with reduced ejection fraction and circa 500 heartbeats were included in the analysis for each animal. The ML algorithm showed excellent prediction of LVP indices estimating, for instance, the end-diastolic pressure with a R2 of 0.955. This novel ML algorithm could assist clinicians in the care of HF patients.

Chemical oxidation coupled with microbial remediation has attracted widespread attention for the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Among them, the precise evaluation of the feasible oxidant concentration of PAH-contaminated soil is the key to achieving the goal of soil functional ecological remediation. In this study, phenanthrene (PHE) was used as the target pollutant, and Fe2+-activated persulphate (PS) was used to remediate four types of soils. Linear regression analysis identified the following important factors influencing remediation: PS dosage and soil PHE content for PHE degradation, Fe2+ dosage, hydrolysable nitrogen (HN), and available phosphorus for PS decomposition. A comprehensive model of "soil characteristics-oxidation conditions-remediation effect" with a high predictive accuracy was constructed. Based on model identification, Pseudomonas aeruginosa GZ7, which had high PAHs degrading ability after domestication, was further applied to coupling repair remediation. The results showed that the optimal PS dose was 0.75% (w/w). The response relationship between soil physical, chemical, and biological indicators at the intermediate interface and oxidation conditions was analysed. Coupled remediation effects were clarified using microbial diversity sequencing. The introduction of Pseudomonas aeruginosa GZ7 stimulated the relative abundance of Cohnella, Enterobacter, Paenibacillus, and Bacillus, which can promote material metabolism and energy transformation during remediation.

Background: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have well-known adverse effects, and numerous studies have shown inappropriate behaviors regarding their use. The primary aim of this study was to analyze the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding the use of NSAIDs simultaneously in one of the largest and most populated areas of Italy, Naples. Methods: From 2021 December 14th to 2022 January 4th, a cross-sectional survey study was conducted among community centers, working places, and universities using a snowball sampling method. For inclusion in the study, the participants were required to be at least 18 years old and residents in the metropolitan area of Naples. Three multiple linear regression analysis (MLRA) models were developed by including variables that could potentially be associated with the following outcomes of interest: knowledge (Model I), attitudes (Model II), and behavior (Model III) regarding the use of NSAIDs. Results: Data were acquired from 1,012 questionnaires administered to subjects evenly divided by gender with an average age of 36.8 years and revealed that only 7.9% of the participants self-admittedly did not take NSAIDs, while approximately half the participants (50%) admitted to occasionally using them. The results showed a statistically significant correlation between attitudes regarding the appropriate use of NSAIDs and less knowledge. The regression analyses indicated that behaviors regarding the appropriate use of NSAIDs were statistically significant in younger respondents, non-smokers, and those without children. These interesting results showed that behaviors regarding the appropriate use of NSAIDs were significantly higher among respondents with less knowledge and more positive attitudes. Conclusion: According to the collected data and statistical analysis results, it is possible to identify factors that can greatly affect inappropriate behaviors regarding the use of NSAIDs and establish targeted prevention programs.

Rationale: It is unclear whether lifestyle factors affect bone mineral density (BMD) during different inflammatory states. Objective: This study investigated the effects of coffee consumption, vitamin D (VD) intake, smoking, and alcohol consumption on heel BMD in adults with different inflammatory states. Methods: The phenotypic data from 249,825 participants were analyzed using the UK Biobank cohort. The inflammatory status was evaluated using C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and the systemic immune-inflammation index. Linear regression analysis was used to examine the association between coffee consumption, VD, smoking, alcohol consumption, and heel BMD in adults with different inflammatory states. Linear regression models were used to analyze the interaction between inflammation and the four lifestyle factors with respect to their influence on heel BMD in adults. Results: Our findings revealed that VD was positively associated with adult heel BMD (ß = 2.41 × 10-2, SE = 5.14 × 10-3, P = 2.72 × 10-6), while alcohol consumption and smoking were negatively associated with adult heel BMD. Coffee was negatively associated with adult heel BMD in low inflammatory states (ß = -1.27 × 10-2, SE = 4.79 × 10-3, P = 8.00 × 10-3), while there was no association between coffee and adult heel BMD in high inflammatory states. Overall, it was found that these four lifestyle factors interacted negatively with inflammatory states. Conclusion: Our study suggests that VD is positively associated with adult heel BMD and that alcohol consumption and smoking are negatively associated with adult heel BMD. Coffee may reverse the adverse effects of inflammation on BMD when the patient is in a highly inflammatory state, thus acting as a protective agent against heel BMD in adults.

This study investigated the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in two distinct water bodies, through the utilization of three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with self-organizing map (SOM) methodology. Specifically, this analysis concentrated on neurons 3, 14, and 17 within the SOM model, identifying notable differences in the DOM compositions of a coal subsidence water body (TX) and the MaChang Reservoir (MC). The humic substance content of DOM TX exceeded that of MC. The origin of DOM in TX was primarily linked to agricultural inputs and rainfall runoff, whereas the DOM in MC was associated with human activities, displaying distinctive autochthonous features and heightened biological activity. Principal component analysis revealed that humic substances dominated the DOM in TX, while the natural DOM in MC was primarily autochthonous. Furthermore, a multiple linear regression model (MLR) determined that external pollution was responsible for 99.11% of variation in the humification index (HIX) of water bodies.

Objectively In objective terms, the return of rural labor force shortens the spatial distance with parents, leading to changes in caregiving support, emotional support, and financial support for parents, thereby affecting the health status of parents. This article, using data from the Chinese Family Panel Studies, analyzes the characteristics of the health status of parents with and without returning migrant children. By employing multiple linear regression models, PSM models, and IV-2SLS methods to address endogeneity bias, the study preliminarily explores the impact of rural labor force return on parental health. The results show that: (1) among the 5,760 older adult individuals, 1866 of them have returning migrant chil-dren, while the remaining 3,894 do not have returning migrant children. (2) Parents' health status generally follows a normal distribution, with a small proportion of parents having very poor or very good health. The proportions of parents with relatively poor, fair, and relatively good health status range between 20 and 40%. Among parents with returning chil-dren, 40.12% have relatively poor health status, 45.01% have fair health status, and a small proportion have very poor or very good health status. In contrast, among parents without returning children, the proportions of parents with relatively poor, fair, and rela-tively good health status are 21.69, 33.21, and 38.45%, respectively. When parents tran-sition from not having returning children to having returning children, their health status decreases by 0.541 levels, indicating a negative impact of rural labor force return on par-ents' health. Based on the analysis results, this article provides policy recommendations from three aspects: how to increase the income of returning labor force, improve the rural pension system, and enhance the concept of children supporting their parents.

Background Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) represent the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, arising from the interstitial cells of Cajal. These tumors bridge the nervous system and muscular layers of the gastrointestinal tract, playing a crucial role in the digestive process. The incidence of GISTs demonstrates notable variations across different racial and ethnic groups, underscoring the need for in-depth analysis to understand the interplay of genetic, environmental, and socioeconomic factors behind these disparities. Linear regression analysis is a pivotal statistical tool in such epidemiological studies, offering insights into the temporal dynamics of disease incidence and the impact of public health interventions. Methodology This investigation employed a detailed dataset from 2009 to 2020, documenting GIST incidences across Asian, African American, Hispanic, and White populations. A meticulous preprocessing routine prepared the dataset for analysis, which involved data cleaning, normalization of racial terminologies, and aggregation by year and race. Linear regression models and Pearson correlation coefficients were applied to analyze trends and correlations in GIST incidences across the different racial groups, emphasizing an understanding of temporal patterns and racial disparities in disease incidence. Results The study analyzed GIST cases among four racial groups, revealing a male predominance (53.19%) and an even distribution of cases across racial categories: Whites (27.66%), Hispanics (25.53%), African Americans (24.47%), and Asians (22.34%). Hypertension was the most common comorbidity (32.98%), followed by heart failure (28.72%). The linear regression analysis for Asians showed a decreasing trend in GIST incidences with a slope of -0.576, an R-squared value of 0.717, and a non-significant p-value of 0.153. A significant increasing trend was observed for Whites, with a slope of 0.581, an R-squared value of 0.971, and a p-value of 0.002. African Americans exhibited a moderate positive slope of 0.277 with an R-squared value of 0.470 and a p-value of 0.201, indicating a non-significant increase. Hispanics showed negligible change over time with a slope of -0.095, an R-squared value of 0.009, and a p-value of 0.879, suggesting no significant trend. Conclusions This study examines GIST incidences across racial groups, revealing significant disparities. Whites show an increasing trend (p = 0.002), while Asians display a decreasing trend (p = 0.153), with stable rates in African Americans and Hispanics. Such disparities suggest a complex interplay of genetics, environment, and socioeconomic factors, highlighting the need for targeted research and interventions that address these differences and the systemic inequalities influencing GIST outcomes.

Amid the global surge of eutrophication in lakes, investigating and analyzing water quality and trends of lakes becomes imperative for formulating effective lake management policies. Water quality index (WQI) is one of the most used tools to assess water quality by integrating data from multiple water quality parameters. In this study, we analyzed the spatio-temporal variations of 11 water quality parameters in one of the largest plateau lakes, Erhai Lake, based on surveys from January 2014 to December 2021. Leveraging machine learning models, we gauged the relative importance of different water quality parameters to the WQI and further utilized stepwise multiple linear regression to derive an optimal minimal water quality index (WQImin) that required the minimal number of water quality parameters without compromising the performance. Our results indicated that the water quality of Erhai Lake typically showed a trend towards improvement, as indicated by the positive Mann-Kendall test for WQI performance (Z = 2.89, p < 0.01). Among the five machine learning models, XGBoost emerged as the best performer (coefficient of determination R2 = 0.822, mean squared error = 3.430, and mean absolute error = 1.460). Among the 11 water quality parameters, only four (i.e., dissolved oxygen, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen) were needed for the optimal WQImin. The establishment of the WQImin helps reduce cost in future water quality monitoring in Erhai Lake, which may also serve as a valuable framework for efficient water quality monitoring in similar waters. In addition, the elucidation of spatio-temporal patterns and trends of Erhai Lake's water quality serves as a compass for authorities, offering insights to bolster lake management strategies in the future.

Background: Institutional births ensure deliveries happen under the supervision of skilled healthcare personnel in an enabling environment. For countries like India, with high neonatal and maternal mortalities, achieving 100% coverage of institutional births is a top policy priority. In this respect, public health institutions have a key role, given that they remain the preferred choice by most of the population, owing to the existing barriers to healthcare access. While research in this domain has focused on private health institutions, there are limited studies, especially in the Indian context, that look at the enablers of institutional births in public health facilities. In this study, we look to identify the significant predictors of institutional birth in public health facilities in India. Method: We rely on the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) factsheet data for analysis. Our dependent variable (DV) in this study is the % of institutional births in public health facilities. We first use Welch's t-test to determine if there is any significant difference between urban and rural areas in terms of the DV. We then use multiple linear regression and partial F-test to identify the best-fit model that predicts the variation in the DV. We generate two models in this study and use Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC) and adjusted R2 values to identify the best-fit model. Results: We find no significant difference between urban and rural areas (P = 0.02, α =0.05) regarding the mean % of institutional births in public health facilities. The best-fit model is an interaction model with a moderate effect size (Adjusted2 = 0.35) and an AIC of 179.93, lower than the competitive model (AIC = 183.56). We find household health insurance (ß = -0.29) and homebirth conducted under the supervision of skilled healthcare personnel (ß = -0.56) to be significant predictors of institutional births in public facilities in India. Additionally, we observe low body mass index (BMI) and obesity to have a synergistic impact on the DV. Our findings show that the interaction between low BMI and obesity has a strong negative influence (ß = -0.61) on institutional births in public health facilities in India. Conclusion: Providing households with health insurance coverage may not improve the utilisation of public health facilities for deliveries in India, where other barriers to public healthcare access exist. Therefore, it is important to look at interventions that minimise the existing barriers to access. While the ultimate objective from a policy perspective should be achieving 100% coverage of institutional births in the long run, a short-term strategy makes sense in the Indian context, especially to manage the complications arising during births outside an institutional setting.

OBJECTIVE: Maintaining plasma glucose homeostasis is vital for mammalian survival, but the masticatory function, which influences glucose regulation, has, to our knowledge, been overlooked. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: In this study, we investigated the relationship between the glycemic response curve and chewing performance in a group of 8 individuals who consumed 80 g of apple. A device called "Chewing" utilizing electromyographic (EMG) technology quantitatively assesses chewing pattern, while glycemic response is analyzed using continuous glucose monitoring. We assessed chewing pattern characterizing chewing time (tchew), number of bites (nchew), work (w), power (wr), and chewing cycles (tcyc). Moreover, we measured the principal features of the glycemic response curve, including the area under the curve (α) and the mean time to reach the glycemic peak (tmean). We used linear regression models to examine the correlations between these variables. RESULTS: tchew, nchew, and wr were correlated with α (R2 =  0.44,   P  <  0.05 for tchew and nchew, P  <  0.001 for wr), and tmean was correlated with tchew (R2  =  0.25,  P  <  0.05). These findings suggest that increasing chewing time and power, while reducing the number of chews, resulted in a wider glycemic curve and an earlier attainment of the glycemic peak. CONCLUSIONS: These results emphasize the influence of proper chewing techniques on blood sugar levels. Implementing correct chewing habits could serve as an additional approach to managing the glycemic curve, particularly for individuals with diabetes.

Korean Americans have consistently reported the underutilization of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, despite their high rates of CRC incidence and mortality. Research has indicated suboptimal CRC knowledge in Korean Americans as one of the main barriers to their recommended CRC screening. Also, research has shown the potential of online health information seeking (OHIS) to improving cancer knowledge and the gender-based differences in the link between OHIS and cancer knowledge. Thus, this study aimed to examine the association between OHIS and CRC knowledge and the moderating effect of gender in this association among Korean Americans. A cross-sectional survey with purposive sampling was conducted of 421 Korean Americans aged 50 to 75 years in the Southeastern U.S. Three-step hierarchical multiple regression analyses were performed to investigate if three blocks of variables-Block 1: control variables (sociodemographics and health-related information), Block 2: independent variables (OHIS and gender), and Block 3: an (OHIS × gender) interaction term-significantly reduce unexplained variance in CRC knowledge. The analyses showed that the final model fits best accounting for 29.3% of the variance in CRC knowledge. Also, the analyses showed that OHIS was positively associated with CRC knowledge and gender moderated the association between OHIS and CRC knowledge. The findings close the knowledge gap existing in the body of literature on the connection of OHIS to CRC knowledge in Korean Americans. Findings also extend the understanding of gender-specific approaches leveraging OHIS for CRC prevention education among Korean Americans.

Using a quantitative approach, this research employs linear regression analysis and examines a sample of 74 companies from the industrial and service sectors listed on the Amman Stock Exchange between 2012 and 2021. The findings reveal that external auditors with forensic accounting competencies have a positive impact on the financial performance of audited companies. The insights presented in this study could serve as valuable tools for improving the financial performance of companies in the service and industry sectors, highlighting the importance of supporting and promoting the skills and competencies of forensic accountants.

Most epidemiological studies on the associations between pesticides exposure and semen quality have been based on a single pesticide, with inconsistent major results. In contrast, there was limited human evidence on the potential effect of pesticides mixture on semen quality. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship of pesticide profiles with semen quality parameters among 299 non-occupationally exposed males aged 25-50 without any clinical abnormalities. Serum concentrations of 21 pesticides were quantified by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Semen quality parameters were abstracted from medical records. Generalized linear regression models (GLMs) and three mixture approaches, including weighted quantile sum regression (WQS), elastic net regression (ENR) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), were applied to explore the single and mixed effects of pesticide exposure on semen quality. In GLMs, as the serum levels of Bendiocarb, ß-BHC, Clomazone, Dicrotophos, Dimethenamid, Paclobutrazole, Pentachloroaniline and Pyrimethanil increased, the straight-line velocity (VSL), linearity (LIN) and straightness (STR) decreased. This negative association also occurred between the concentration of ß-BHC, Pentachloroaniline, Pyrimethanil and progressive motility, total motility. In the WQS models, pesticides mixture was negatively associated with total motility and several sperm motility parameters (ß: -3.07∼-1.02 per decile, FDR-P<0.05). After screening the important pesticides derived from the mixture by ENR model, the BKMR models showed that the decreased qualities for VSL, LIN, and STR were also observed when pesticide mixtures were at ≥ 70th percentiles. Clomazone, Dimethenamid, and Pyrimethanil (Posterior inclusion probability, PIP: 0.2850-0.8900) were identified as relatively important contributors. The study provides evidence that exposure to single or mixed pesticide was associated with impaired semen quality.

The collection of data on populations of networks is becoming increasingly common, where each data point can be seen as a realisation of a network-valued random variable. Moreover, each data point may be accompanied by some additional covariate information and one may be interested in assessing the effect of these covariates on network structure within the population. A canonical example is that of brain networks: a typical neuroimaging study collects one or more brain scans across multiple individuals, each of which can be modelled as a network with nodes corresponding to distinct brain regions and edges corresponding to structural or functional connections between these regions. Most statistical network models, however, were originally proposed to describe a single underlying relational structure, although recent years have seen a drive to extend these models to populations of networks. Here, we describe a model for when the outcome of interest is a network-valued random variable whose distribution is given by an exponential random graph model. To perform inference, we implement an exchange-within-Gibbs MCMC algorithm that generates samples from the doubly-intractable posterior. To illustrate this approach, we use it to assess population-level variations in networks derived from fMRI scans, enabling the inference of age- and intelligence-related differences in the topological structure of the brain's functional connectivity. Arsenic (As) is a widespread environmental contaminant that poses a significant threat to ecosystems and human health. Although previous studies have qualitatively revealed the effects of individual soil properties on the transport and fate of As in the vadose zone, their integrated impacts remain obscure. Moreover, studies investigating the retardation factor therein, which is a key parameter for comprehending As transport in the vadose zone, are extremely limited. In this study, we investigated the interplay of soil properties with As transport and retention within the vadose zone, while focusing on the retardation factor of As. We employed steady-state unsaturated water-flow soil column experiments coupled with a mobile-immobile model and multiple linear regression analysis to elucidate the dependence of As retardation factors on the soil properties. In the mobile water zone, iron and organic matter contents emerged as the two most influential properties that impedes As mobility. Whereas, in the immobile water zone, the coefficient of uniformity and bulk density were the most influential factors that enhanced As retention. Finally, we derived an empirical equation for calculating the As retardation factors in each zone, offering a valuable tool for describing and predicting As behavior to protect the groundwater resources underneath.

BACKGROUND: Early-onset sepsis (EOS) is a serious illness that affects preterm newborns, and delayed antibiotic initiation may increase the risk of adverse outcomes. PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to examine the present time of antibiotic administration in preterm infants with suspected EOS and the factors that contribute to delayed antibiotic initiation. METHODS: In this retrospective study in China, a total of 82 early preterm infants with suspected EOS between December 2021 and March 2023 were included. The study utilized a linear regression analytical approach to identify independent factors that contribute to delayed antibiotic administration. RESULTS: The mean gestational age and birth weight of the study population were 29.1 ± 1.4 weeks and 1265.7 ± 176.8 g, respectively. The median time of initial antibiotic administration was 3.8 (3.1-5.0) hours. Linear regression revealed that severe respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) (ß = 0.07, P = 0.013), penicillin skin test (PST) timing (ß = 0.06, P < 0.001) and medical order timing (ß = 0.04, P = 0.017) were significantly associated with the initial timing of antibiotic administration. CONCLUSIONS: There is an evident delay in antibiotic administration in preterm infants with suspected EOS in our unit. Severe RDS, PST postponement and delayed medical orders were found to be associated with the delayed use of antibiotics, which will be helpful for quality improvement efforts in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
