INTRODUCTION: Acute pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE) is a life-threatening disease. Considering the availability and accessibility of assessing the serum lipids, this study aims to define the predictive value of lipid profile, as well as the history of lipid disorders, for the mortality of PTE patients. CONTENT: Clinical studies, in which the relation of lipid profile, including triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and total cholesterol, as well as history of imbalance of lipids, with mortality of PTE patients was reported, were included. Non-English articles, reviews, letters, editorials, and non-English papers were excluded. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. The risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal tools and CMA 4 was utilized for the quantitative synthesis. Out of 3,724 records, six studies were included in this systematic review. Lipid profile is suggested as a prognostic marker for survival in patients with PTE so higher initial serum HDL, LDL, and total cholesterol levels were associated with lower mortality rates in PTE patients. In addition, dyslipidemia was found to be associated with mortality of PTE patients. Based on the quantitative synthesis, there was a greater serum level of HDL in the survival group (standardized mean difference: -0.98; 95 % CI: -1.22 to -0.75; p-value<0.01). SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK: Mortality is lower in PTE patients with greater serum lipid levels; therefore, the early prognosis of PTE may be ascertained by measuring serum lipids within the first 24 h of admission.

The luminal surface of the endothelium is exposed to dynamic blood flow patterns that are known to affect endothelial cell phenotype. While many studies have documented the phenotypic changes by gene or protein expression, less is known about the role of blood flow pattern on the endothelial cell (EC) lipidome. In this study, shotgun lipidomics was conducted on human aortic ECs (HAECs) exposed to unidirectional laminar flow (UF), disturbed flow (DF), or static conditions for 48 h. A total of 520 individual lipid species from 17 lipid subclasses were detected. Total lipid abundance was significantly increased for HAECs exposed to DF compared to UF conditions. Despite the increase in the total lipid abundance, HAECs maintained equivalent composition of each lipid subclass (% of total lipid) under DF and UF. However, by lipid composition (% of total subclass), 28 lipid species were significantly altered between DF and UF. Complimentary RNA sequencing of HAECs exposed to UF or DF revealed changes in transcripts involved in lipid metabolism. Shotgun lipidomics was also performed on HAECs exposed to pro-inflammatory agonists lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or Pam3CSK4 (Pam3) for 48 h. Exposure to LPS or Pam3 reshaped the EC lipidome in both unique and overlapping ways. In conclusion, exposure to flow alters the EC lipidome and ECs undergo stimulus-specific lipid reprogramming in response to pro-inflammatory agonist exposure. Ultimately, this work provides a resource to profile the transcriptional and lipidomic changes that occur in response to applied flow that can be accessed by the vascular biology community to further dissect and extend our understanding of endothelial lipid biology.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the association of the quality of diet as calculated by the Nutrient Rich Food index (NRF9.3), and length of service (LS) (≤10 years vs. >10 years) with selected serum biochemical parameters, the proportions of different lipid profile fractions and advanced glycation endproduct (AGE) values of 108 firefighters from the State Fire Service in Wroclaw. The LS officers > 10 years had significantly higher total cholesterol (211.50 (184.00-254.00) vs. 184.00 (166.00-194.00)), LDL (123.75 (108.20-167.90) vs. 105.18 (90.24-119.00)) non-HDL (151.70 (132.00-196.70) vs. 122.00 (106.00-140.00)), triglycerides (118.50 (96.00-158.00) vs. 78.00 (67.00-103.00)) and lower HDL concentrations (51.30 (45.60-56.70) vs. 58.00 (51.70-66.10)) compared to firefighters in the LS ≤ 10 years group. Significant differences between the seniority groups were also noted for all lipid profile ratios. Regardless of the officers' seniority, systolic blood pressure was observed at the highest normal level of 134.4 ± 14.4 in the LS ≤ 10 years group and 139.5 ± 14.3 in the LS > 10 years group. Advanced glycation endproduct values were significantly dependent on diet quality, as expressed by the NRF9.3 index and on the TG/HDL ratio, but not on seniority. Diet quality, as expressed by the NRF9.3 index, had a significant association with GLU and FI levels, and components of the lipid profile between seniority groups. As NRF9.3 increased, TG/HDL, LDL/HDL, TC/HDL, and non-HDL/HDL ratios decreased. AGEs were significantly affected by NRF9.3 and significantly associated with TG/HDL. Firefighters' diets, as assessed by the NRF9.3 index, had a significant association with predictors of insulin resistance, diabetes, and cardiometabolic predictors between seniority groups. The nutritional education of firefighters (and other professional groups working irregularly), especially those with longer tenure (e.g., >10 years), is necessary to prevent the development of, e.g., CVD, MetS, and T2DM, which contribute towards a reduced ability to perform professional duties.

We examined the lipid profiles in the aqueous humor (AH) of myopic patients to identify differences and investigate the relationships among dissertating lipids. Additionally, we assessed spherical equivalents and axial lengths to explore the pathogenesis of myopia. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was employed to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the lipid composition of samples from myopic patients with axial lengths <26 mm (Group A) and >28 mm (Group B). Differences in lipid profiles between the two groups were determined using univariate and multivariate analyses. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves were used to identify discriminating lipids. Spearman correlation analysis explored the associations between lipid concentrations and biometric parameters. Three hundred and nine lipids across 21 lipid classes have been identified in this study. Five lipids showed significant differences between Group B and Group A (VIP > 1, P < 0.05): BMP (20:3/22:3), PG (22:1/24:0), PS (14:1/22:4), TG (44:2)_FA18:2, and TG (55:3)_FA18:1. The area under the curve (AUC) for these lipids was >0.75. Notably, the concentrations of BMP (20:3/22:3), PS (14:1/22:4), and TG (55:3)_FA18:1 were correlated with spherical equivalents, while BMP (20:3/22:3) and PS (14:1/22:4) correlated with axial lengths. Our study identified five differential lipids in myopic patients, with three showing significant correlations with the degree of myopia. These findings enhance our understanding of myopia pathogenesis through lipidomic alterations, emphasizing changes in cell membrane composition and function, energy metabolism and storage, and pathways involving inflammation, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR), and metabolic processes related to phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylglycerol, triglycerides, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and cholesterol.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is the main general and clinical health challenge worldwide. Based on the National Cholesterol Education Program, if the person has three or more indices containing: elevated fasting blood sugar, high levels of triglycerides, hypertension, low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and central obesity, he suffers MetS. The Mediterranean-Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay diet is a novel diet that with the specific aim of safeguarding cognitive function. Propolis is a resinous substance produced by bees from the combination of buds and secretions of plants with saliva and bee enzymes. After propolis supplementation, a significant reduction in fasting plasma glucose levels and lipid profiles has been observed. Considering the importance of chronic diseases like MetS on health, the role of the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet and propolis supplement that will improve blood sugar, blood lipid, anthropometric indicators, blood pressure, and cognitive function, and limited contradictory studies, we decided to conduct this study. This study, which is a randomized controlled clinical trial study, will be conducted on adults with MetS who will visit Hazrat Ali Health Center in Isfahan. Participants must provide informed consent before engaging in the study. Demographic data such as age, gender, and medical history will be recorded. Then, anthropometric indices, MetS indices, and cognitive function will be measured in all subjects. The study participants will be divided into three groups and will be controlled for 12 weeks. We will have a MIND diet + placebo group, a MIND diet + propolis supplement group, and a control group that will receive a microcrystalline cellulose placebo and usual dietary advice. At the end of the intervention, all indices will be assessed again. The data obtained in the study will be analyzed at descriptive and analytical levels by the statistical software SPSS26. The present study's protocol was approved by the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (www.irct.ir) on 3/28/2023 and a registration reference is IRCT20230105057054N1.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropeptide Y is a neurotransmitter in the nervous system and belongs to the orexigenic system that increases appetite. Its excessive secretion leads to obesity. Leptin is a pro-inflammatory adipokine (produced in adipose tissue) induced in obesity and may mediate increased antitumor immunity in obesity (including the promotion of M1 macrophages). Leptin and neuropeptide Y gene polymorphisms, causing increased leptin levels and the occurrence of obesity, and lipid profile disorders, may increase the effectiveness of immunotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 121 patients with advanced NSCLC without mutations in the EGFR gene and rearrangements of the ALK and ROS1 genes, undergoing immunotherapy (1st and 2nd line of treatment) or chemoimmunotherapy (1st line of treatment), we assessed BMI, lipid profile, PD-L1 expression on cancer cells using the immunohistochemical method (clone SP263 antibody), leptin concentration in blood serum by ELISA, polymorphisms in the promoter region of the genes for leptin (LEP) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) by real-time PCR. RESULTS: Leptin concentration was significantly higher in obese patients than in patients with normal or low weight (p = 0.00003) and in patients with disease stabilization compared to patients with progression observed during immunotherapy (p = 0.012). Disease control occurred significantly more often in patients with the GA or AA genotype than patients with the GG genotype in the rs779039 polymorphism of the LEP gene. The median PFS in the entire study group was five months (95% CI: 3-5.5), and the median OS was 12 months (95% CI: 8-16). Median PFS was highest in patients with TPS ≥ 50% (6.5 months) and in obese patients (6.6 months). Obese patients also had a slightly longer median OS compared to other patients (23.8 vs. 13 months). The multivariate Cox logistic regression test showed that the only factor reducing the risk of progression was TPS ≥ 50% (HR = 0.6068, 95% CI: 0.4001-0.9204, p = 0, 0187), and the only factor reducing the risk of death was high leptin concentration (HR = 0.6743, 95% CI: 0.4243-1.0715, p = 0.0953). CONCLUSION: Assessment of nutritional status, serum leptin concentration and polymorphisms in the LEP gene may be of additional importance in predicting the effectiveness of immunotherapy and chemoimmunotherapy in patients with advanced NSCLC.

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver ailment worldwide, in which nonpharmacological strategies have a considerable role in the treatment. Probiotic supplementation as well as physical exercise can improve cardiometabolic parameters, but further research is needed to determine the effects of combined treatment versus exercise alone in managing NAFLD-associated biomarkers, primarily liver enzymes, lipid markers, and insulin resistance. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of probiotic supplementation, combined with exercise versus exercise alone, on liver enzymes and cardiometabolic markers in patients with NAFLD. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials was performed by searching PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to April 2024. The search was restricted to articles published in the English language and human studies. Random effects models were used to calculate weighted mean differences (WMD). RESULTS: Pooled estimates (9 studies, 615 patients, intervention durations ranging from 8 to 48 weeks) revealed that probiotics plus exercise decreased aspartate transaminase (AST) [WMD=-5.64 U/L, p = 0.02], gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) [WMD=-7.09 U/L, p = 0.004], low-density lipoprotein (LDL) [WMD=-8.98 mg/dL, p = 0.03], total cholesterol (TC) [WMD=-16.97 mg/dL, p = 0.01], and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) [WMD=-0.94, p = 0.005] significantly more than exercise only. However, probiotics plus exercise did not significantly change high-density lipoprotein (HDL) [WMD = 0.07 mg/dL, p = 0.9], fasting insulin [WMD=-1.47 µIU/mL, p = 0.4] or fasting blood glucose (FBG) [WMD=-1.57 mg/dL, p = 0.3] compared with exercise only. While not statistically significant, there were clinically relevant reductions in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) [WMD=-6.78 U/L, p = 0.1], triglycerides (TG) [WMD=-21.84 mg/dL, p = 0.1], and body weight (BW) [WMD=-1.45 kg, p = 0.5] for probiotics plus exercise compared with exercise only. The included studies exhibited significant heterogeneity for AST (I2 = 78.99%, p = 0.001), GGT (I2 = 73.87%, p = 0.004), LDL (I2 = 62.78%, p = 0.02), TC (I2 = 72.41%, p = 0.003), HOMA-IR (I2 = 93.86%, p = 0.001), HDL (I2 = 0.00%, p = 0.9), FBG (I2 = 66.30%, p = 0.01), ALT (I2 = 88.08%, p = 0.001), and TG (I2 = 85.46%, p = 0.001). There was no significant heterogeneity among the included studies for BW (I2 = 0.00%, p = 0.9). CONCLUSION: Probiotic supplementation combined with exercise training elicited better results compared to exercise alone on liver enzymes, lipid profile, and insulin resistance in patients with NAFLD. Insulin resistance (IR) is a complex pathological condition central to metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This review evaluates the impact of lipids on insulin resistance (IR) by analyzing findings from human and animal studies. The articles were searched on the PubMed database using two keywords: (1) "Role of Lipids AND Insulin Resistance AND Humans" and (2) "Role of Lipids AND Insulin Resistance AND Animal Models". Studies in humans revealed that elevated levels of free fatty acids (FFAs) and triglycerides (TGs) are closely associated with reduced insulin sensitivity, and interventions like metformin and omega-3 fatty acids show potential benefits. In animal models, high-fat diets disrupt insulin signaling and increase inflammation, with lipid mediators such as diacylglycerol (DAG) and ceramides playing significant roles. DAG activates protein kinase C, which eventually impairs insulin signaling, while ceramides inhibit Akt/PKB, further contributing to IR. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for developing effective prevention and treatment strategies for IR-related diseases.

Objective: The present research was conducted to evaluate the negative effects of nicotine powder on the blood physiology, and biochemical and histological alterations of Labeo rohita. Materials and Methods: Fish were divided into four groups (1-4). Fish groups 2, 3, and 4 were exposed to different concentrations of nicotine, such as 0.75, 1.25, and 1.75 mg/l, while group 1 acted as a control. To find out the long-term impact of nicotine on body physiology, we conducted a 42-day experiment. After the completion of the experiment, hematology, biochemical assays, and histology were done. Results: Results revealed a considerable increase in HGB, red blood cells, WBCs, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, red cell distribution width -SD, procalcitonin, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, very low-density lipoprotein, alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, globulin, thyroid stimulating hormone, BUN, creatinine, and blood glucose levels, whereas mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, RDW, platelet, high-density lipoprotein, albumin, total proteins, and T3 levels were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) decreased in exposed fish as compared to control group fish. Histological alterations showed that exposure to smokeless nicotine causes deleterious and degenerative effects in the liver, kidney, and gills of exposed fish. Conclusion: Nicotine administration in fish results in adverse effects on different biochemical and hematological parameters and causes histological alterations in some vital organs of exposed fish.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The balance between atherogenic and antiatherogenic lipid particles significantly influences coronary artery disease (CAD), as an imbalance may contribute to the development and progression of atherosclerosis, which affects the risk and severity of CAD. This study aims to introduce and validate the atherogenic combined index (ACI) as a novel lipid biomarker that, comprehensively assesses the balance between atherogenic and antiatherogenic particles in the blood to effectively reflect the cumulative atherogenic effect and its association with the presence and severity of CAD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 1,830 patients diagnosed with CAD and a total of 650 patients without CAD were included in the study cohort for comprehensive analysis and comparison. Based on the tertiles of the SYNTAX score (SS), three subgroups of patients with CAD were identified. ACI and other atherogenic indices were compared to predict the presence and severity of CAD. RESULTS: The levels of ACI and other non-traditional lipid markers levels were higher in the CAD group compared to the non-CAD group (p <0.05, for all). ACI showed a good linear association with the SYNTAX score (r = 0.527; p <0.001). The multivariate logistic regression model showed that ACI was an independent predictor of the presence (OR: 1.602, 95% CI: 1.509-1.701, p <0.001) and severity (OR: 1.296, 95% CI: 1.243-1.351, p <0.001) of CAD after adjustment for various confounders. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that ACI may serve as a promising and stronger tool for predicting the presence and severity of CAD.

Increased cardiovascular risk has been associated with certain platelet morphological parameters, and several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been reported to be linked. Still, little is known about their role among children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). So, we aimed to investigate platelet parameters and lipid profile changes in relation to rs7961894 SNP in children with T1DM. Eighty children with T1DM and eighty apparently healthy controls participated in this cross-sectional study. Platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT), HbA1c, triglycerides, total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were measured, and atherogenic indices were calculated. Using a real-time polymerase chain allelic discrimination technique, rs7961894 SNP was genotyped. Children with T1DM had significantly higher MPV, PDW, TC, and LDL-C compared to controls. 25% of patients had rs7961894 CT genotype with significantly higher MPV, PDW, PCT, LDL-C, triglycerides, Castelli's risk index II (CRI II), and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) compared to CC genotyped patients. MPV correlated significantly with CRI II and AIP, PDW with CRI II, while PCT correlated substantially with HbA1c, LDL-C, CRI II, and AIP. rs7961894 CT genotype was a significant dependent predictor of the changes in MPV, PDW, and PCT in multivariate regression analysis.Conclusion: In children with T1DM, rs7961894 CT genotype is significantly linked to MPV, PDW, and PCT changes, which showed a substantial relationship to CRI II and AIP, highlighting the importance of monitoring these patients to identify potential cardiovascular risks early. Background: Alterations in the serum lipid profile have been suspected in many psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and depression. However, studies on lipid status in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are sparse and inconsistent. Methods: Using the nationwide, population-based IQVIA Disease Analyzer database, this retrospective cohort study included 5367 outpatients from general practices in Germany aged ≥18 years with a documented first diagnosis of ADHD between January 2005 and December 2021 and 26,835 propensity score-matched individuals without ADHD. Study outcomes were the first diagnosis of lipid metabolism disorders as a function of ADHD within up to 10 years of the index date. The cumulative 10-year incidence was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier curves and compared using the log-rank test. In addition, univariate Cox regression analyses were performed. Results: In the regression analysis, there was no significant association between ADHD and subsequent lipid metabolism disorders in the total population (HR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.83-1.08), among women (HR: 1.04; 95% CI: 0.84-1.28), and among men (HR: 0.89; 95% CI: 0.74-1.06). In addition, no significant association was observed in the disease-stratified analyses. Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate that ADHD does not exert an influence on lipid metabolism. However, further investigation is warranted, particularly with respect to pharmacological interventions.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of 24 weeks of moderate aerobic exercise on lipids and lipoprotein levels; Lipo (a) markers, and their association with cognitive performance in healthy older adults. METHODS: A total of 150 healthy subjects (100 males and 50 females; age range: 65-95 years) were recruited for this study. Based on the LOTCA test score, subjects were classified into two groups: the control group (n = 50) and the cognitive impairment group (n = 100). Cognitive functioning, leisure-time physical activity (LTPA), lipid profile, total cholesterol, TG, HDL-c, LDL-C, and lipo(a) were assessed at baseline and post-24-week aerobic exercise interventions using LOTCA battery, pre-validated Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) version II, colorimetric, and immunoassay techniques, respectively. RESULTS: Significant improvements in cognitive function and modulation in lipid profile and lipoprotein (a) markers were reported in all older subjects following 24 weeks of moderate exercise. LOTCA-7-sets scores significantly correlated with physical activity status and the regulation of lipids and Lipo (a) markers. Physically active persons showed higher cognitive performance along with a reduction in the levels of T-Cholest., TG, LDL-C, Lipo (a), and an increase in the levels of HDL-C and aerobic fitness VO2max compared with sedentary participants. Cognitive performance correlated positively with increased aerobic fitness, HDL-C, and negatively with T-Cholest., TG, LDL-C, and Lipo (a). However, a significant increase in the improvement of motor praxis, vasomotor organization, thinking operations, attention, and concentration were reported among older adults. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings revealed that supervised moderate aerobic training for 24 weeks significantly enhances cognitive functions via mitigating older adults' lipid profiles and lipoprotein (a). Cognitive performance is positively correlated with aerobic fitness and HDL-C level and negatively with T-Cholest., TH, LDL-C, and Lipo (a).

Background: Among many genes which have been analyzed to understand obesity and related metabolic traits among children and adolescents, not many studies are conducted on LGALS3 gene, especially in population of children. A positive correlation of circulating galectin 3 serum levels with impaired blood glucose, high blood pressure and higher values of serum lipids and was found in general population. The aim was to investigate possible association of rs4644 with body mass index, glycaemia, and lipid profile in Serbian adolescents. Methods: The study included 72 boys and 79 girls, 14-15 years of age. Among boys 51 (67.1%) had normal values of BMI, 11 (14.5%) were overweight, and 14 (18.4%) were obese. Among girls, 53 (63.9%) had normal BMI, 16 (19.3%) were overweight, and 14 (16.9%) were obese. Diabetes type 1 or 2, genetic syndromes, generalized inflammation, cardiovascular and malignant diseases were criteria for exclusion. Genotyping was performed by Real time PCR.

INTRODUCTION: Non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) levels can increase the cardiometabolic risk factors in patients with hypothyroidism, but the findings across studies have not been consistently conclusive. The aim of this study was to find the association between non-HDL-C and cardiometabolic risk factors in patients with hypothyroidism. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this case-control study, a total of 120 subjects among which 60 diagnosed hypothyroidism patients and 60 age-matched healthy controls were enrolled, aged 30-65 years. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP and DBP) were measured. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), fasting blood sugar (FBS), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were estimated. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), and non-HDL-C were calculated. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Mean of BMI, WC, FBS, TSH, TC, TG, non-HDL-C, LDL-C, VLDL-C, SBP, and DBP were significantly elevated in cases compared to controls (p<0.001). However, the mean of T3, T4, and HDL-C were significantly reduced in cases compared to controls (p<0.001). Non-HDL-C has shown a significant positive correlation with age (r=0.345, p<0.01), TC (r=0.451, p<0.01), TG (r=0.269, p<0.05), LDL-C (r=0.402, p<0.01), and VLDL-C (r=0.269, p<0.05) among cases. However, non-HDL-C has shown a significant negative correlation with HDL-C (r=-0.330, p<0.05) among cases. Non-HDL-C significantly predicted cardiometabolic risk in patients with hypothyroidism (F(13,46)=3.500, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Non-HDL-C has shown a significant association with age and lipid abnormalities in patients with hypothyroidism. Non-HDL-C significantly predicts cardiometabolic risk factors in patients with hypothyroidism.

Introduction: Dyslipidemia commonly complicates type 2 diabetes mellitus, yet the relationship between glycosylated hemoglobin and blood lipid levels remains uncertain. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 27,158 participants from the People's Hospital of Yuxi. Statistical comparisons for continuous variables utilized analysis of variance (ANOVA), while chi-square analysis was employed for categorical variables. Boxplots assessed the concentration, dispersion, and deviation of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) distribution. A linear regression analysis examined the association between HbA1c and lipid profile, complemented by a fitting curve to visualize trends. Results: Participants who developed diabetes exhibited higher age and elevated Body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), TC, TG, LDL-C, and FPG levels compared to those without diabetes (p < 0.001). Linear regression analysis demonstrated significant associations between HbA1c values and TC, TG, LDL-C, and HDL-C (p < 0.001). The plotted curve indicated that as TC, TG, and LDL levels increased, HbA1c levels rose, while HDL levels decreased. Conclusion: HbA1c was positively correlated with TC, TG, LDL-C, and negatively correlated with HDL-C in the population in the central Yunnan Plateau.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have revealed the positive healthy impacts of branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs). However, most of these studies evaluated the serum BCFAs in humans, or treatment with exogenous BCFAs in animal or in-vitro models and the health impacts of dietary BCFAs have not yet been studied. Due to positive effects of BCFAs in sport, in the current study, we aimed to investigate the association between dietary BCFAs and metabolic and inflammatory parameters among elite and subelite soccer players. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 335 elite and subelite soccer players (196 male), aged between 20 and 45 years old. Soccer players were enrolled from 32 teams under the directive of The Chinese Football Association. Demographic, anthropometric, and dietary assessments were performed and laboratory measurement including serum lipids, glycemic markers, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein was measured. RESULTS: Those with the highest dietary BCFAs consumption had higher appetite (p = .009). Also, high consumption of dietary BCFAs was associated with lower diastolic blood pressure (odds ratio: 0.958; confidence interval: 0.918-0.999; p = .046) and low high-sensitivity C-reactive protein concentrations in the third tertile of dietary BCFAs (odds ratio: 0.431; confidence interval: 0.300-0.618; p < .001). No other association between biochemical variables and dietary BCFAs was found. CONCLUSION: As shown in the current study, higher dietary BCFAs consumption was associated with lower diastolic blood pressure and inflammation. Due to very limited number of studies, further studies are needed to have a better perspective of these associations and their underlying mechanisms.

Background: Recent evidence has linked changes in plasma lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) and paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) levels with increased risk for development of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in different populations. However, studies on this in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa are scarce. Objective: This study assessed the association between reduced plasma LCAT and PON-1 levels and an increased risk of ASCVD, and their potential as biomarkers for ASCVD. Methods: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease patients and healthy controls were randomly selected for this cross-sectional case-control study from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria, between March 2022 and March 2023. Plasma LCAT and PON-1 were determined by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, while the lipid profile was measured by spectrophotometry. Results: A total of 153 ASCVD patients (mean age: 52.92 ± 10.24 years) and 50 healthy controls (mean age: 46.96 ± 11.05 years) were included in the analyses. Stastistically significant increases were observed in the mean body weight, hip circumference, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, body mass index, diastolic and systolic blood pressure (all p ≤ 0.001), and pulse rate (p = 0.003) compared to the control values. Statistically significant increases were also observed in the mean plasma total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (all p ≤ 0.001). In contrast, the mean plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, LCAT, and PON-1 (p ≤ 0.001) were notably reduced compared to the control values. Conclusion: The present study provides supportive evidence that changes in plasma LCAT and PON-1 could predispose individuals to risk of premature ASCVD. What this study adds: Plasma LCAT and PON-1 may serve as independent markers or complement other established cardiovascular disease markers to discriminate the risk of ASCVD when it is unclear.

Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) infection shows obvious regional and ethnic differences. Although studies have shown that these differences may be associated with lipid metabolism, to date, no large-scale studies have explored this. This study explored the seropositivity rate of HHV-8 among 2516 residents from 10 regions of northwest China and then the correlates of HHV-8 infection with lipid profile. The HHV-8 serological positivity rate was 15.6% among all residents. The HHV-8 seroprevalence ranged 11.2-27.6% among different ethnicities. Across different BMI levels, the positive rates of HHV-8 were 27.6%, 16.9%, and 13.6% for a BMI < 18.5, 18.5-24.9, and ≥25, respectively. HHV-8 seropositivity rate was lower for hypertensive people (12.6%) than for non-hypertensive people (16.7%). Univariate logistic regression analyses revealed that age, hypertension, systolic blood pressure, BMI, total cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) significantly correlated with HHV-8 seropositivity (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis after adjusting for confounding factors showed that HDL-C (odds ratio [OR]: 0.132, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.082-0.212; p < 0.001) and BMI (OR: 0.959, 95% CI 0.933-0.986; p = 0.003) were associated with HHV-8 seropositivity. Subgroup analyses concerning ethnicity, sex, or age demonstrated a consistent relationship with HDL-C. The results of HHV-8 seropositivity and BMI were inconsistent in the subgroups. However, Spearman's correlation analysis between HHV-8 serum antibody titer and HDL-C levels showed no linear relationship among HHV-8 seropositive individuals (ρ = -0.080, p = 0.058). HHV-8 serum antibody titers were also not significantly correlated with BMI (ρ = -0.015, p = 0.381). Low HDL-C levels may be an independent risk factor for HHV-8 infection, but there is no significant correlation between HDL-C levels and HHV-8 antibody titers.

This randomized clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of silymarin supplementation on glycemic indices and serum lipid profile in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. In this open-label randomized clinical trial study, 48 patients with T2DM were eligible to participate for 12 weeks and were divided into two groups randomly: 24 subjects in the intervention (received three 140 mg silymarin capsules daily and diet plan) and 24 in control (received a diet plan). Fasting blood samples and anthropometric data were collected, and glycemic indices and lipid profiles were determined at baseline and at the end of the study. Out of 60 patients included in the clinical trial, 48 people completed the study. In comparing silymarin and control groups before and after the study, a significant reduction was observed in weight and body mass index. However, after adjustment, no significant difference was seen between the two groups. Furthermore, daily consumption of three capsules of 140 mg silymarin for 12 weeks did not show any significant difference on the level of fasting blood sugar (p = 0.789), HbA1c (p = 0.719), and lipid profile. The findings of the present study show that silymarin did not lead to changes in the level of glycemic index and lipid profile in patients with T2DM.
