INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of achieving < 37.7% excess body-weight loss (EBWL) within 3 months of postlaparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) on clinical outcomes and its correlation with adipocyte function. METHODS: Patients (n = 176) who underwent LSG between January 2019 and January 2023 were included. Weight loss and status of health markers were monitored postoperatively. The cohort was stratified based on EBWL < 37.7% at 3 months or not. Variables including neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), insulin resistance, and comorbidities were analyzed. Omental visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue samples were used to analyze the differences in adipocyte function by western blot. RESULTS: Patients with EBWL < 37.7% at 3 months post-LSG (suboptimal group) comprised less likelihood of achieving ≥ 50% EBWL than those who achieved ≥ 37.7% EBWL (optimal group) at 6 months (42.55% vs. 95.52% in optimal group, p < 0.001), 12 months (85.11% vs. 99.25% in optimal group, p < 0.001) and 24 months (77.14% vs. 94.74% in optimal group, p = 0.009) post-LSG. High BMI (OR = 1.222, 95% CI 1.138-1.312, p < 0.001), NLR ≥ 2.36 (OR = 2.915, 95% CI 1.257-6.670, p = 0.013), and female sex (OR = 3.243, 95% CI 1.306-8.051, p = 0.011) significantly predicted EBWL < 37.7% at 3 months post-LSG. Patients with NLR ≥ 2.36 had significantly lower adipose triglyceride lipase in omental fat (p = 0.025). CONCLUSION: EBWL < 37.7% at 3 months post-LSG is a strong predictor of subsequent suboptimal weight loss. High BMI, NLR ≥ 2.36, and female sex are risk factors in predicting EBWL < 37.7% at 3 months post-LSG. These findings may offer a reference to apply adjuvant weight loss medications to patients who are predisposed to suboptimal outcomes.

M50 bearing steel has great potential for applications in the field of aerospace engineering, as it exhibits outstanding mechanical and physical properties. From a microscopic point of view, bearing wear originates from the microscopic region of the contact interface, which usually only contains hundreds or even several atomic layers. However, the existing researches seldom study the wear of M50 bearing steel on the microscopic scale. This study explored the atomic-scale modeling method of M50 bearing steel. Then molecular dynamics simulations of nanoindentation on the M50 bearing steel model were carried out to study the size effect of the mechanical behaviors. The simulation results show that with the change in the radius of the diamond indenter in the nanoindentation simulation, the calculated nanohardness decreases. According to the size effect, when the indentation radius is 200 nm, the hardness obtained by the simulation is about 9.26 GPa, and that of the M50 sample measured by the nanoindentation is 10.4 GPa. Then nanoindentation simulations were carried out at different temperatures. The main bearings of aero-engines generally work at 300-500 degrees Celsius. When the simulated temperature was increased from 300 K to 800 K, the hardness of the model decreased by 15%, and the model was more prone to plastic deformation. In this study, a new molecular dynamics modeling method for M50 bearing steel was proposed, and then nanoindentation simulation was carried out, and the nanoindentation experiment verified the correctness of the model. These results are beneficial to the basic understanding of the mechanical performance of M50 bearing steel.

A sensitivity analysis for loading conditions and muscle deconditioning on astronaut response for spaceflight transient accelerations was carried out using a mid-size male human body model with active musculature. The model was validated in spaceflight-relevant 2.5-15 g loading magnitudes in seven volunteer tests, showing good biofidelity (CORA: 0.69). Sensitivity analysis was carried out in simulations varying pulse magnitude (5, 10, and 15 g), rise time (32.5 and 120 ms), and direction (10 directions: frontal, rear, vertical, lateral, and their combination) along with muscle size change (± 15% change) and responsiveness (pre-braced, relaxed, vs. delayed response) changes across 600 simulations. Injury metrics were most sensitive to the loading direction (50%, partial-R2) and least sensitive to muscle size changes (0.2%). The pulse magnitude also had significant effect on the injury metrics (16%), whereas muscle responsiveness (3%) and pulse rise time (2%) had only slight effects. Frontal and upward loading directions were the worst for neck, spine, and lower extremity injury metrics, whereas rear and downward directions were the worst for head injury metrics. Higher magnitude pulses and pre-bracing also increased the injury risk.

BACKGROUND: Left atrial ablation to obtain pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) is a technologically intensive procedure utilizing innovative and continually improving technology. Changes in the technology utilized for PVI can in turn lead to changes in procedure costs. Because of the proximity of the esophagus to the posterior wall of the left atrium, various technologies have been utilized to protect against thermal injury during ablation. The impact on hospital costs during PVI ablation from utilization of different technologies for esophageal protection during ablation has not previously been evaluated. OBJECTIVE: To compare the costs of active esophageal cooling to luminal esophageal temperature (LET) monitoring during left atrial ablation. METHODS: We performed a time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) analysis to determine costs for PVI procedures. Published data and literature review were utilized to determine differences in procedure time and same-day discharge rates using different esophageal protection technologies and to determine the cost impacts of same-day discharge versus overnight hospitalization after PVI procedures. The total costs were then compared between cases using active esophageal cooling to those using LET monitoring. RESULTS: The effect of implementing active esophageal cooling was associated with up to a 24.7% reduction in mean total procedure time, and an 18% increase in same-day discharge rate. TDABC analysis identified a $681 reduction in procedure costs associated with the use of active esophageal cooling after including the cost of the esophageal cooling device. Factoring in the 18% increase in same-day discharge resulted in an increased cost savings of $2,135 per procedure. CONCLUSIONS: The use of active esophageal cooling is associated with significant cost-savings when compared to traditional LET monitoring, even after accounting for the additional cost of the cooling device. These savings originate from a per-patient procedural time savings and a per-population improvement in same-day discharge rate.

Maturation of auditory cortex neural encoding processes was assessed in children with typical development (TD) and autism. Children 6-9 years old were enrolled at Time 1 (T1), with follow-up data obtained ~ 18 months later at Time 2 (T2), and ~ 36 months later at Time 3 (T3). Findings suggested an initial period of rapid auditory cortex maturation in autism, earlier than TD (prior to and surrounding the T1 exam), followed by a period of faster maturation in TD than autism (T1-T3). As a result of group maturation differences, post-stimulus group differences were observed at T1 but not T3. In contrast, stronger pre-stimulus activity in autism than TD was found at all time points, indicating this brain measure is stable across time.

We have recently reported that a recombinant HIV-1NL4.3 containing Met-to-Ile change at codon 50 of integrase (IN) (IN:M50I) exhibits suppression of the virus release below 0.5% of WT HIV, and the released viral particles are replication-incompetent due to defects in Gag/GagPol processing by inhibition of the initiation of autoprocessing of GagPol polyproteins in the virions and leads to replication-incompetent viruses. The coexisting Ser-to-Asn change at codon 17 of IN or Asn-to-Ser mutation at codon 79 of RNaseH (RH) compensated the defective IN:M50I phenotype, suggesting that both IN and RH regulate an HIV infectability. In the current study, to elucidate a distribution of the three mutations during anti-retroviral therapy among patients, we performed a population analysis using 529 plasma virus RNA sequences obtained through the MiSeq. The result demonstrated that 14 plasma HIVs contained IN:M50I without the compensatory mutations. Comparing the sequences of the 14 viruses with that of the defective virus illustrated that only Val-to-Ile change at codon 151 of IN (IN:V151I) existed in the recombinant virus. This IN:V151I is known as a polymorphic mutation and was derived from HIVNL4.3 backbone. A back-mutation at 151 from Ile-to-Val in the defective virus recovered HIV replication capability, and Western Blotting assay displayed that the back-mutation restored Gag/GagPol processing in viral particles. These results demonstrate that a combination of IN:M50I and IN:V151I mutations, but not IN:M50I alone, produces a defective virus.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a worldwide health problem affecting humans, animals, and the environment within the framework of the "One Health" concept. The aim of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of pathogenic strains of the species Escherichia coli (E. coli), their AMR profile, and biofilm-forming potential. The isolated strains from three swine faeces and free lagoons (ISO 16654:2001/Amd 1:2017) were confirmed using Phoenix M50 and 16S rDNA PCR. The antibiotic sensitivity to 34 clinically applied antibiotics was determined by Phoenix M50 and the disc diffusion method, according to the protocols of the CLSI and EUCAST. We confirmed the presence of 16 E. coli isolates, of which 87.5% were multi-drug-resistant and 31.25% performed strong biofilms. The possibility for the carrying and transmission of antibiotic-resistance genes to quinolones (qnr), aminoglycosides (aac(3)), ß-lactamase-producing plasmid genes ampC, and blaSHV/blaTEM was investigated. We confirmed the carrying of blaSHV/blaTEM in one and ampC in seven isolates. The strains were negative for the virulence genes (ETEC (LT, STa, and F4), EPEC (eae), and STEC/VTEC (stx and stx2all)). The results should contribute to the development of effective measures for limitation and control on the use of antibiotics, which is a key point in the WHO action plan.

M50NiL steel, which belongs to a new generation of case-hardening steels used in aerospace bearing applications, is used mainly for the manufacturing of aerospace transmission components that operate under high temperatures. In this study, the effects of the hot deformation parameters and the initial microstructure on the hot deformation behavior of M50NiL steel were investigated through Gleeble-3500 isothermal hot compression tests. The experimental results demonstrated that the critical stain of dynamic recrystallization and the deformation activation energy of the coarse-grained samples were higher than those of the fine-grained samples. This is attributed to the difficulty of deformation and the dynamic recrystallization behavior of coarse-grained samples. Moreover, fine-grained samples contain a large number of dispersed phases, which can pin the grain boundaries and inhibit the growth of recrystallized grains. Such phenomena are beneficial for obtaining finer and more uniform microstructures in M50NiL steel. The experimental results can provide a useful reference for preparing M50NiL steel with excellent mechanical properties.

Functional brain markers that can inform research on brain abnormalities, and especially those ready to facilitate clinical work on such abnormalities, will need to show not only considerable sensitivity and specificity but enough consistency with respect to developmental course that their validity in individual cases can be trusted. A challenge to establishing such markers may be individual differences in developmental course. The present study examined auditory cortex activity in children at an age when developmental changes to the auditory cortex 50 ms (M50) and 100 ms (M100) components are prominent to better understand the use of auditory markers in pediatric clinical research. MEG auditory encoding measures (auditory evoked fields in response to pure tone stimuli) were obtained from 15 typically developing children 6-8 years old, with measures repeated 18 and 36 months after the initial exam. MEG analyses were conducted in source space (i.e., brain location), with M50 and M100 sources identified in left and right primary/secondary auditory cortex (Heschl's gyrus). A left and right M50 response was observed at all times (Time 1, Time 2, Time 3), with M50 latency (collapsing across hemisphere) at Time 3 (77 ms) 10 ms earlier than Time 1 (87 ms; p < 0.001) and with M50 responses on average (collapsing across time) 5 ms earlier in the right (80 ms) than left hemisphere (85 ms; p < 0.05). In the majority of children, however, M50 latency changes were not constant across the three-year period; for example, whereas in some children a ~10 ms latency reduction was observed from Time 1 to Time 2, in other children a ~10 ms latency reduction was observed from Time 2 to Time 3. M100 responses were defined by a significant "peak" of detected power with magnetic field topography opposite M50 and occurring 50-100 ms later than the M50. Although M100s were observed in a few children at Time 1 and Time 2 (and more often in the right than left hemisphere), M100s were not observed in the majority of children except in the right hemisphere at Time 3. In sum, longitudinal findings showed large between- and within-subject variability in rate of change as well as time to reach neural developmental milestones (e.g., presence of a detectable M100 response). Findings also demonstrated the need to examine whole-brain activity, given hemisphere differences in the rate of auditory cortex maturation. Pediatric research will need to take such normal variability into account when seeking clinical auditory markers.

Improving the tribological performance of M50 steel under the conditions of wide load range is of great significance. In this study, the interfacial structure of surface micropores filled with Sn-Ag-Cu or Sn-Ag-Cu/whisker carbon nanotubes (whiskerCNT) of M50 material was prepared by laser additive manufacturing and high-temperature infiltration. From 2 to 22 N, the lubrication characteristics of Sn-Ag-Cu and whiskerCNT in surface micropores of M50 was investigated. Results indicate that Sn-Ag-Cu can precipitate to the worn surface and form a lubricating layer, which has a good lubricating effect. Moreover, the flow behavior of Sn-Ag-Cu on a worn surface can play the role of crack healing. At higher load, the strength of the lubricating film is enhanced by whiskerCNT, which renders the lubricating film not vulnerable to premature rupture.

RESUMEN

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) research indicates differences in neural brain measures in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) compared to typically developing (TD) children. As reviewed here, resting-state MEG exams are of interest as well as MEG paradigms that assess neural function across domains (e.g., auditory, resting state). To date, MEG research has primarily focused on group-level differences. Research is needed to explore whether MEG measures can predict, at the individual level, ASD diagnosis, prognosis (future severity), and response to therapy.

We propose a novel adaptive moving mesh method for the numerical solution of a forced curve shortening geometric evolution equation. Control of the mesh quality is obtained using a tangential mesh velocity derived from a mesh equidistribution principle, where a positive adaptivity measure or monitor function is approximately equidistributed along the evolving curve. Central finite differences are used to discretize in space the governing evolution equation for the position vector, and a second-order implicit scheme is used for the temporal integration. Simulations are presented indicating the generation of meshes which resolve areas of high curvature and are of second-order accuracy. Furthermore, the new method delivers improved solution accuracy compared to the use of uniform arc-length meshes.

Abnormal auditory neuromagnetic M50 and M100 responses, reflecting primary/secondary auditory cortex processing, have been reported in children who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Some studies have reported an association between delays in these responses and language impairment. However, as most prior research has focused on verbal individuals with ASD without cognitive impairment, rather little is known about neural activity during auditory processing in minimally verbal or nonverbal children who have ASD (ASD-MVNV)-children with little or no speech and often significant cognitive impairment. To understand the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying auditory processing in ASD-MVNV children, magnetoencephalography (MEG) measured M50 and M100 responses arising from left and right superior temporal gyri during tone stimuli in three cohorts: (1) MVNV children who have ASD (ASD-MVNV), (2) verbal children who have ASD and no intellectual disability (ASD-V), and (3) typically developing (TD) children. One hundred and five participants (8-12 years) were included in the final analyses (ASD-MVNV: n = 16, 9.85 ± 1.32 years; ASD-V: n = 55, 10.64 ± 1.31 years; TD: n = 34, 10.18 ± 1.36 years). ASD-MVNV children showed significantly delayed M50 and M100 latencies compared to TD. These delays tended to be greater than the corresponding delays in verbal children with ASD. Across cohorts, delayed latencies were associated with language and communication skills, assessed by the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale Communication Domain. Findings suggest that auditory cortex neural activity measures could be dimensional objective indices of language impairment in ASD for either diagnostic (e.g., via threshold or cutoff) or prognostic (considering the continuous variable) use.

BACKGROUND: Several approaches have not been successful to suppress HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) infection among infected individuals or to prevent it yet. In order to expand strong HIV specific humoral and cellular responses, Virus-like particles (VLPs) as potential vaccines show significant increase in neutralizing antibodies secretion, T-cell count and also secretion of cytokines. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at immunological evaluation of VLPs harboring high copy of MPERV3 in BALB/c mice. METHODS: Female BALB/c mice were immunized with homologous and heterologous primeboosting regimens of HIV-1 VLPMPER-V3. Their immune responses were evaluated for humoral responses (Total IgG and IgG isotyping) and cellular responses (IFN-γ, IL-5 secretion, in vitro CTL assay and T cell proliferation) and compared in immunized mice. RESULTS: The data showed robust induction of humoral response in mice groups which received different regimens of VLP. Furthermore, analysis of cytokine profile indicated that the highest IL-5 secretion was related to VLP+M50 group and confirmed the dominance of Th2 immunity in this group. CONCLUSION: This study showed that VLP MPER-V3 as a potential vaccine candidate has the potency as an effective prophylactic vaccine and this finding guarantees further investigations to achieve a promising HIV-1 vaccine candidate.

The M50 and M100 auditory evoked responses reflect early auditory processes in the primary/secondary auditory cortex. Although previous M50 and M100 studies have been conducted on individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and indicate disruption of encoding simple sensory information, analogous investigations of the neural correlates of auditory processing through development from children into adults are very limited. Magnetoencephalography was used to record signals arising from the left and right superior temporal gyrus during auditory presentation of tones to children/adolescents and adults with ASD as well as typically developing (TD) controls. One hundred and thirty-two participants (aged 6-42 years) were included into the final analyses (children/adolescents: TD, n = 36, 9.21 ± 1.6 years; ASD, n = 58, 10.07 ± 2.38 years; adults: TD, n = 19, 26.97 ± 1.29 years; ASD, n = 19, 23.80 ± 6.26 years). There were main effects of group on M50 and M100 latency (p < 0.001) over hemisphere and frequency. Delayed M50 and M100 latencies were found in participants with ASD compared to the TD group, and earlier M50 and M100 latencies were associated with increased age. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant association between language ability and both M50 and M100 latencies. Importantly, differences in M50 and M100 latencies between TD and ASD cohorts, often reported in children, persisted into adulthood, with no evidence supporting latency convergence.

Our previous demonstration that the M100 somatosensory evoked magnetic field (SEF) has a similar temporal profile, dipole orientation and source location whether induced by activation (ON-M100) or deactivation (OFF-M100) of electrical stimulation suggests a common cortical system to detect sensory change. While we have not recorded such change-driven components earlier than M100 using electrical stimulation, clear M50 responses were reported using both ON and OFF mechanical stimulation (Onishi et al. in Clin Neurophysiol 121:588-593, 2010). To examine the significance of M50 and M100 in reflecting the detection of somatosensory changes, we recorded these waveforms in 12 healthy subjects (9 males and 3 females) by magnetoencephalography in response to mechanical stimulation from a piezoelectric actuator. Onset and offset (ON and OFF) stimuli were randomly presented with three preceding steady state (PSS) durations (0.5, 1.5 and 3 s) in one consecutive session. Results revealed that (i) onset and offset somatosensory events elicited clear M50 and M100 components; (ii) M50 and M100 components had distinct origins, with M50 localised to the contralateral primary somatosensory cortex (cS1) and M100 to the bilateral secondary somatosensory cortex (iS2, cS2); and (iii) the amplitude of M50 in cS1 was independent of the PSS durations, whereas that of M100 in S2 was dependent on the PSS durations for both ON and OFF events. These findings suggest that the M50 amplitude in cS1 reflects the number of activated mechanoreceptors during Onset and Offset, whereas the M100 amplitude in S2 reflects change detection based on sensory memory for Onset and Offset stimuli at least in part. RESUMEN

We study a linearly transformed particle method for the aggregation equation with smooth or singular interaction forces. For the smooth interaction forces, we provide convergence estimates in L1 and L∞ norms depending on the regularity of the initial data. Moreover, we give convergence estimates in bounded Lipschitz distance for measure valued solutions. For singular interaction forces, we establish the convergence of the error between the approximated and exact flows up to the existence time of the solutions in L1∩Lp norm.

First-order methods with momentum such as Nesterov's fast gradient method are very useful for convex optimization problems, but can exhibit undesirable oscillations yielding slow convergence for some applications. An adaptive restarting scheme can improve the convergence rate of the fast gradient methd, when the parameter of a strongly convex cost function is unknown or when the iterates of the algorithm enter a locally well-conditioned region. Recently, we introduced an optimized gradient method, a first-order algorithm that has an inexpensive per-iteration computational cost similar to that of the fast gradient method, yet has a worst-case cost function convergence bound that is twice smaller than that of the fast gradient method and that is optimal for large-dimensional smooth convex problems. Building upon the success of accelerating the fast gradient method using adaptive restart, this paper investigates similar heuristic acceleration of the optimized gradient method. We first derive new step coefficients of the optimized gradient method for a strongly convex quadratic problem with known function parameters, yielding a convergence rate that is faster than that of the analogous version of the fast gradient method. We then provide a heuristic analysis and numerical experiments that illustrate that adaptive restart can accelerate the convergence of the optimized gradient method. Numerical results also illustrate that adaptive restart is helpful for a proximal version of the optimized gradient method for nonsmooth composite convex functions.

M50 bearing steels were alternately implanted with Ti⁺ and N⁺ ions using solid and gas ion sources of implantation system, respectively. N-implantation was carried out at an energy of about 80 keV and a fluence of 2 × 1017 ions/cm², and Ti-implantation at an energy of about 40-90 keV and a fluence of 2 × 1017 ions/cm². The microstructures of modification layers were analyzed by grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction, auger electron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the gradient structure was formed under the M50 bearing steel subsurface, along the ion implantation influence zone composed of amorphous, nanocrystalline, and gradient-refinement phases. A layer of precipitation compounds like TiN is formed. In addition, nano-indentation hardness and tribological properties of the gradient structure subsurface were examined using a nano-indenter and a friction and wear tester. The nano-indentation hardness of N + Ti-co-implanted sample is above 12 GPa, ~1.3 times than that of pristine samples. The friction coefficient is smaller than 0.2, which is 22.2% of that of pristine samples. The synergism between precipitation-phase strengthening and gradient microstructure is the main mechanism for improving the mechanical properties of M50 materials.

BACKGROUND: The development of left and right superior temporal gyrus (STG) 50 ms (M50) and 100 ms (M100) auditory responses in typically developing (TD) children and in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was examined. Reflecting differential development of primary/secondary auditory areas and supporting previous studies, it was hypothesized that whereas left and right M50 STG responses would be observed equally often in younger and older children, left and right M100 STG responses would more often be absent in younger than older children. In ASD, delayed neurodevelopment would be indicated via the observation of a greater proportion of ASD than TD subjects showing missing M100 but not M50 responses in both age groups. Missing M100 responses would be observed primarily in children with ASD with language impairment (ASD + LI) (and perhaps concomitantly lower general cognitive abilities). METHODS: Thirty-five TD controls, 63 ASD without language impairment (ASD - LI), and 38 ASD + LI were recruited. Binaural tones were presented. The presence or absence of a STG M50 and M100 was scored. Subjects were grouped into younger (6-10 years old) and older groups (11-15 years old). RESULTS: Although M50 responses were observed equally often in older and younger subjects and equally often in TD and ASD, left and right M50 responses were delayed in ASD - LI and ASD + LI. Group comparisons showed that in younger subjects M100 responses were observed more often in TD than ASD + LI (90 versus 66%, p = 0.04), with no differences between TD and ASD - LI (90 versus 76%, p = 0.14) or between ASD - LI and ASD + LI (76 versus 66%, p = 0.53). In older subjects, whereas no differences were observed between TD and ASD + LI, responses were observed more often in ASD - LI than ASD + LI. Findings were similar when splitting the ASD group into lower- and higher-cognitive functioning groups. CONCLUSION: Although present in all groups, M50 responses were delayed in ASD. Examining the TD data, findings indicated that by 11 years, a right M100 should be observed in 100% of subjects and a left M100 in 80% of subjects. Thus, by 11 years, lack of a left and especially right M100 offers neurobiological insight into sensory processing that may underlie language or cognitive impairment.
