The concentrations of macro elements (Ca, K, Mg, and Na), essential trace elements (Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Ni, and Zn), and nonessential trace elements (Al, As, Cd, Pb, and Ti) in the shell and soft tissues of Perna perna (L. 1758) mussels from Southeast Brazil are presented as a baseline reference for understanding the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the quality of coastal environments. For shells, the macro elements load was greater during the pandemic period at all sampling sites; however, for soft tissues, the opposite trend was recorded. On the contrary, the concentrations of trace elements in the shell were below the limit of quantification in most samples, and they tended to decrease in the soft tissues during the pandemic. Thus, the COVID-19 was a short-term conservation event that positively impacted the mussels. The results are relevant for monitoring the coastal environment in a post-COVID-19 scenario.

This study aimed to increase the protein content of duckweed, a promising alternative to animal proteins and a sustainable source of plant protein cultivated via soilless agriculture, by manipulating the culture medium conditions (Hoagland solution). The contribution percentages of KH2PO4 and Ca(NO3)2, pivotal macro-elements in Hoagland solution affecting duckweed protein content, were determined using Plackett-Burman factorial design as 33.06 % and 36.61 %, respectively. Additionally, optimization was conducted employing response surface methodology, incorporating pH alongside KH2PO4 and Ca(NO3)2. Under optimal conditions of 3.92 mM KH2PO4, 7.95 mM Ca(NO3)2, and 7.22 pH, the protein content of duckweed increased significantly, reaching 51.09 % from 39.81 %. The duckweed cultivated in modified Hoagland solution exhibited protein content of 41.74 %, while duckweed grown in commercial Hoagland solution displayed protein content of 33.01 %. This study showed protein content of duckweed could significantly increase according to the growth medium and showcasing its potential as a sustainable source of plant protein.

Propolis, a natural product with many biological activities, is a resinous material produced by honeybees. It contains not only valuable components but also some possible contaminants in varying amounts. Hence, this study aimed to examine how the process step of wax separation affects certain elements, pesticide residues, and phenolic compounds in propolis. Total phenolics, elements, and some pesticide residues were analyzed in the crude propolis (CP samples), wax portion (W samples), and remaining propolis fraction (PF samples) after wax separation. Total phenolics of the CP samples were determined in the range of 31.90-45.00 mg GAE g-1 sample, while those of the PF samples were in the range of 54.97-162.09 mg GAE g-1 sample. Loss/reduction values by means of wax separation for phenolics were calculated as 10.88% and 17.89%, respectively. Pb contents of all PF samples were low (0.232-1.520 mg kg-1), but it was also noteworthy that nearly 40% or even more of Cr, As, Cd, and Pb were removed by wax separation. Removal of significant amounts of carbendazim (38.09%-67.35%), metalaxyl (81.57%-72.67%), tebuconazole (65.99%-78.36%), and propargite (88.46%-83.05%) was also achieved. Wax separation enables the removal of toxic substances from crude propolis without causing huge losses in phenolic compounds.

Long-term application of organic and mineral fertilizers can lead to changes in the elemental composition of agroecosystem components. Both the levels of nutrients and potentially toxic elements can change, as can the potential for these elements to be available to plants through changes in soil properties. Soil and plant samples of two species (pea Pisum sativum L. and oat Avena sativa L.) were collected from plots of a long-term field experiment on the application of mineral and organic fertilizers and their combinations to gray forest soils in the Vladimir region, Russia. Soil samples from the 0-20 and 20-40 cm layers were subjected to acid digestion to determine total element content. Mobile forms of elements were extracted from topsoil samples using acetate-ammonium buffer (pH 4.8). Sample preparation of pea and oat plant organs (stems, leaves, pods/ears) included sample digestion in a microwave sample digestion system ETHOS EASY (Milestone, Italy). The elemental composition of the samples was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) using Agilent 5800 ICP-OES (Agilent Technologies, USA). The dataset includes concentration data for 34 elements, including rare earth elements, in these samples collected in 2021. The dataset also contains general agrochemical characteristics of soils of the experimental groups: pH of water and salt suspension, organic carbon content, mobile forms of phosphorus. The data can be valuable to researchers developing fertilizer application systems and modeling changes in the elemental composition of agroecosystems.

It is important to know the mineral distribution in cereal grains for nutritional improvement or genetic biofortification. Distributions and intensities of micro-elements (Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn) and macro-elements (P, S, K and Ca) in Arborg oat were investigated using synchrotron-based on X-ray fluorescence imaging (XFI). Arborg oat provided by the Crop Development Center (CDC, Aaron Beattie) of the University of Saskatchewan for 2D X-ray fluorescence scans were measured at the BioXAS-Imaging beamline at the Canadian Light Source. The results show that the Ca and Mn were mainly localized in the aleurone layer and scutellum. P, K, Fe, Cu, and Zn were mainly accumulated in the aleurone layer and embryo. Particularly the intensities of P, K, Cu, and Zn in the scutellum were higher compared to other areas. S was also distributed in each tissue and its abundance in the sub-aleurone was the highest. In addition, the intensities of S and Cu were highest in the nucellar projection of the crease region. All these elements were also found in the pericarp but they were at lower levels than other tissues. Overall, the details of these experimental results can provide important information for micronutrient biofortification and processing strategies on oat through elemental mapping in Arborg oat.

Seasonal responses of green ormer in terms of antioxidant capacity and lipid peroxidation, proximate and fatty acid tissue composition, trace and macro elements concentrations over the seasons were studied in relation to temperature shifts in the Northern Adriatic Sea. Overall antioxidative defenses (SOD, TBARS, TAS, LDH) varied significantly (p < 0.001) according to seasons (primarily spring and summer). The proportions of overall SFA were highest in summer. The proportions of MUFA increased in autumn, with significant differences between genders in spring and summer, and spring, summer and autumn for C18:1n7 and C20:4n6. The only fatty acid lacking significant variation between seasons was C22:5n3. Significant overall differences were observed in summer vs. winter samples for As, Ba, Co, Ni, Mn, Pb, Sb, and Se content in soft tissues, however, gender variations were not significant. The data obtained in the study are of utmost importance for the management of this under-investigated species.

This study was designed to evaluate a new therapeutic approach for inactive ovaries based on the epidural administration of a GnRH agonist (Receptal) and an investigation of the impact of this treatment on the hormonal, oxidant/antioxidant and micro- and macro-element profiles. Sixty cows with postpartum anestrus were divided into two groups: the first group (group Repid, n = 30) was administered an epidural injection of Receptal, while the second group (group Cepid, n = 30) received saline and was considered the control group. Evaluation of hormonal (progesterone, FSH, LH, testosterone, and cortisol), oxidant/antioxidant (MDA, SOD, GPx and TAC) as well as micro- and macroelement (calcium, phosphorus, manganese and magnesium) profiles was done in serum. The results showed that the epidural injection of Receptal has the potential to induce estrus response and conception incidence in treated cows. Compared to the control group, progesterone, FSH, and LH concentrations were significantly increased in the treated group, whereas testosterone and cortisol decreased (p < 0.05) following treatment. In addition, the treated group had greater TAC and GPx concentrations than the control group. Serum concentrations of magnesium increased (p < 0.05) following receptal treatment, but differences in other minerals were not detected. This research suggests a novel, effective method of treating inactive ovaries with epidural infusion of a GnRH agonist.

BACKGROUND: The use of fruits and vegetables for the management and treatment of erectile dysfunction has gained popularity due to the cheaper cost, accessibility and perceived absence of side effects. Much of the work done on plant-based aphrodisiacs has focused on the phytochemistry of secondary metabolites. AIM: This work sought to analyze selected fruits and vegetables that are commonly used in the management of erectile dysfunction in Ghana and quantify the levels of some micro- and macro-elements necessary for good penile health in order to determine the usefulness or otherwise of the selected produce. METHODS: Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy was used to detect and quantify the levels of potassium (K), calcium (Ca), selenium (Se), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn) in carrot roots, cucumber fruit, garlic bulb, ginger rhizome, nutmeg fruit, sweet potato tuber, tiger nut tuber and watermelon fruit. RESULTS: The analysis revealed the presence of K, Ca, Mg, Fe and Zn. Levels of Se were below detection. The concentration of K was the highest in each of the food substances. However, in terms of recommended daily allowance, Mg had the highest contribution. Cucumber fruit and the rind of watermelon fruit had the highest levels of micro- and macro-elements implicated in erectile dysfunction. CONCLUSION: The potential use of these foods to treat and manage erectile dysfunction may not only be due to the presence of phytochemicals alone but also the presence of significant levels of micro- and macro-elements required for good penile health.

Vegetable consumption is recommended and encouraged by all nutritionists and doctors across the planet. However, in addition to minerals which are beneficial to the body, certain minerals with a negative influence on human health can sneak in. It is very important that in the case of some minerals their content in vegetables is known, so that the recommended limits are not exceeded. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the macro elements (Na, K, Ca, Mg) and trace elements (Cu, Mn, Fe, Cd, Pb, Zn, Co) in 24 samples of vegetables from four botanical families (Solanaceae, Brassicaceae, Apiaceae and Amaryllidaceae), purchased from the market in Timișoara, Romania, both imported products as well as local products. The atomic-absorption-spectrometry technique (FAAS) was used to evaluate the macro elements and trace elements. The values obtained for the macro elements and trace elements were used as input data for the analysis of multivariate data, the principal component analysis (PCA) in which the vegetable samples were grouped according to their contribution of certain mineral elements, as well as according to some of the botanical families to which they belong. At the same time, based on the values obtained for trace elements, an assessment of the risk to human health in terms of consumption of the vegetables studied was carried out. The risk assessment for human health was determined on the basis of the estimated daily dose (EDI), the values of the target hazard coefficient (THQ), the values of the total target hazard coefficient (TTHQ) and the carcinogenic risk (CR). Following the determination of THQ, the values obtained followed the order THQWith > THQCd > THQPb > THQCo > THQMn > THQZn > THQFe. The results on the content of macro elements and trace elements, as well as the assessment of the risk to human health when consuming the assessed vegetables, were within the limits of European Union (EU) and World Health Organization and Food and Agriculture Organization (WHO/FAO)legislation.

In this study, a total of 15 elements, both physiological and causing toxic effects, have been determined in 9 medicinal plants collected from their natural environment in the Algerian Sahara regions. The concentrations of elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) after acid digestion and by the X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). By analyzing the spiked test and the reference materials, the accuracy of the measurements was determined. Our findings show differences in elements composition and concentration between the species under investigation, indicating differences in physiological function of the plant as a result of elemental interactions within it. The elements were quantified (in µg/g): Br (0.04-5.44), Cd (1.21-1.34), Co (1.12-64.35), Cr (1.51-59.05), Cu (1.81-9.28), Fe (94.26-668.55), Mn (16.34-70.77), Ni (1.5-53.64), Pb (1.18-2.55), Zn (1.21-310.80) and (in mg/g): Ca (4.23-4.70), Cl (21.98-117.91), P (28.92-30.49), S (4.15-11.95), Si (1.99-2.36). Mean element levels in medicinal plants were established in decreasing order as follows: Zn>Mn>Cu>Cr>Ni>Pb>Cd>Co. Except for nickel, which reached 53.64µg/g in the Capparis spinosa L species, heavy metal concentrations were found to be low in all samples. Based on traditional use, we can cautiously conclude that these medicinal plants pose no risk to users.

The aim of this study is to evaluate salivary remineralisation versus chemical remineralisation/infiltration of enamel, using different dentistry materials. The enamel changes were studied using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and the depth of lesions and demineralisation/remineralisation/infiltration percentage were calculated. Additionally, the macro elemental composition of the teeth was performed using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Two studies were performed: (i) demineralisation of enamel in 3% citric acid and infiltration treatment with infiltration resin (Icon, DMG), remineralisation with Fluor Protector (Ivoclar Vivadent) and artificial saliva pH 8; and (ii) enamel demineralisation in saliva at pH 3 and remineralisation at salivary pH 8. The results showed that, firstly, for the remineralisation of demineralised enamel samples, Fluor Protector (Ivoclar Vivadent) was very effective for medium demineralised lesions followed by saliva remineralisation. In cases of deep demineralisation lesions where fluoride could not penetrate, low viscosity resin (Icon, DMG, Hamburg) effectively infiltrated to stop the demineralisation process. Secondly, remineralisation in salivary conditions needed supplementary study over a longer period, to analyse the habits, diet and nutrition of patients in detail. Finally, demineralisation/remineralisation processes were found to influence the macro elemental composition of enamel demineralisation, with natural saliva proving to be less aggressive in terms of decreasing Ca and Mg content.

BACKGROUND: Each of the bioindicator organisms studied, such as fish, crustaceans, or parasites, have certain advantages when used in the assessment of metal exposure. In this research, special attention was given to intestinal parasites, acanthocephalans, as effective metal bioaccumulators with the main aim of estimating and comparing metal accumulation in all organisms involved in their life cycle and testing their usage as sensitive bioindicators in metal exposure assessments. METHODS: Efficiency of metal accumulation was evaluated in fish intestine (brown trout, Salmo trutta Linnaeus, 1758), gammarids (Gammarus balcanicus Schäferna, 1922) and acanthocephalans (Dentitruncus truttae Sinzar, 1955) in the Krka River at site threatened by industrial and municipal wastewaters (Town of Knin) and reference site (Krka River source) in two seasons (autumn and spring). All samples were digested in a drying oven at 85 °C for 3.5 h using nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Samples were diluted with ultrapure water and total concentrations of 15 trace and macroelements were measured by HR ICP-MS. RESULTS: Higher concentrations of Co, Cu, Fe and Mn at the contaminated than at the reference site were recorded in all bioindicator organisms. Additionally, Se, Sr, Zn, Ca, K and Mg were elevated at the contaminated site in acanthocephalans, Cs, Pb, Zn and K in gammarids and Se, Sr and Ca in fish intestine. Opposite, concentrations of Cd, Cs and Rb were mostly higher in organisms from the reference than wastewater impacted site, which did not coincide with waterborne metal exposure but indicated importance of assessing dietary metal uptake. CONCLUSION: More effective metal accumulation was confirmed in acanthocephalans than fish and gammarids, especially of Cd and Pb in respect to gammarids, and of Cd, Cu, Pb, Mn and Sr in respect to fish intestine. Thus, both fish intestine and whole body of D. truttae were confirmed as sensitive indicators of low environmental metal exposure, reflecting site-specific differences, which proved their potential to be used in monitoring programmes and metal exposure assessment in real environmental situations.

Fresh fruit and vegetable juices are commonly consumed as a valuable source of nutrients, while wheatgrass juice is, due to its nutritional value, used as a natural dietary supplement. The main aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of wheatgrass juice addition to apple, beet, carrot, orange, and lemon juice on total and in vitro bioaccessible concentrations of K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, and Zn, vitamin C concentration, total phenolic and flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity. In comparison to other juices, wheatgrass juice had the highest total and in vitro bioaccessible concentrations of Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, and Zn, while beet juice had the highest K concentration. Lemon and orange juices had the highest vitamin C concentration, while the highest total phenolic and flavonoid content were found in wheatgrass juice. After the addition of wheatgrass juice, Ca, Mg, Mn, and Zn concentration increased in all examined juices, vitamin C concentration increased in apple, beet, and carrot juice, total phenolic content increased in carrot juice, while total flavonoid content increased in apple, carrot, and orange juice. In comparison to the examined juices, wheatgrass juice has better nutritional value, and it could be used in a mixture with other juices to improve their nutritional value.

Bee pollen contains a diversity of bioactive components. Nevertheless, since pollen is retrieved from a variety of plants, including the cultivated ones which are subjected to agrochemical treatments, its contamination is unavoidable. In this context, 45 samples of pollen were analysed with optimized analytical methods for trace and macro elements (ICP-MS), pesticides and metabolites residues (LC & GC-MS/MS) content. According to the results, potassium and iron were the most abundant in terms of concentration and frequency of detection, while the contribution of the most hazardous elements, such as lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, to the total concentration of trace elements was lower than 1%. For pesticides, coumaphos was the most frequently detected in the examined samples (22%), followed by propargite, azoxystrobin, dimethoate and cypermethrin. Non-carcinogenic health risk assessment demonstrated in the majority of cases negligible risk for adults and children. On the contrary, carcinogenic risk assessment considering a worst case scenario disclosed nickel and in less extent chromium and arsenic, as risk drivers, exhibiting in several samples carcinogenic risk values for adults above the safety threshold. Yet, regarding that both adults and children unlikely will daily consume such pollen quantities, especially on a long-term basis, an overestimation of risk should be appraised.

Endemic fluorosis is a common biogeochemical disease. Although the etiology is clear, its molecular mechanism is not fully understood. So far, there is no specific method to effectively treat fluorosis, mainly to prevent. In recent years, a large number of studies have confirmed that a variety of macro elements such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and trace elements such as selenium and boron play a positive regulatory role in the occurrence and development of fluorosis, and have different degrees of influence in the body's antagonism against fluorosis. High levels of trace elements such as arsenic, lead, aluminum and chromium are risk factors for fluorosis. In view of the importance of a variety of macro and trace elements in human nutrition and health, this article reviews the latest developments in multiple elements and fluorosis, especially skeletal fluorosis and dental fluorosis, in order to further understand the causes of fluoride-induced health damage, and provide theoretical reference for improving the prevention strategies of fluorosis in a targeted manner.

In this study, the change in the content of the macro and micro elements in the growing wild grazing plant of Calligonum comosum was tracked at the Research and Training Station of King Faisal University in Al-Hassa Governorate, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Mineral elements were estimated in aerial parts (plant as a whole, leaves and stem) from January-April 2020. The results showed that the concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the plant as a whole plant > leaves > roots, while the concentrations of calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc and copper elements in the leaves was higher than other parts whereas the concentrations of these elements of whole plant were higher than the concentrations in roots. The results showed that the plant contents of nitrogen, potassium and zinc were the highest in March, while the concentrations of phosphorus, calcium, iron and copper were in February. The concentrations of magnesium, manganese and copper was the highest in January and April respectively. The values ​​of nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, zinc and copper ranged from 11.1 to 18.4 g kg-1, 4.17-2.33 g kg-1, 13.73-18.97 g kg-1, 24.50-28.90 g kg-1, 10.40-12.30 gkg-1, 1500-1677 mg kg-1, 45.45-49.29 mg kg-1, 70.70-177.23 mg kg-1, 16.78-73.46 mg kg-1, respectively. Furthermore, the results exhibited that the lowest values of the elements appeared in the plant roots in April. As well as, the distribution of the elements followed the normal life curve from January to April. Besides that, the evaluated elements satisfy the needs of the grazing animals' life in which this type of plant grows.

This study shows the chemical-physical and nutritional results obtained using food-grade sea water for the preparation of fresh pasta Gnocchi with respect to those prepared with tap water. Gnocchi obtained by mixing the flour with seawater (GSW) were compared with traditional Gnocchi made with tap water (GTW). The contents of sodium chloride, macro and micro elements, volatile molecules profile, thermal properties, and morphological analysis were investigated in both Gnocchi types. The analysis of chlorides showed that the samples prepared with sea water had a significantly lower NaCl content after cooking in comparison with those prepared with tap water. These results were also confirmed by the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis for sodium content. The profiles of the volatile molecules acquired by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) evidenced significant differences between the groups of aromatic molecules of the two typologies of samples. Morphological analysis evidenced that both raw and cooked GSW Gnocchi were structurally tightened whereas GTW Gnocchi showed a labile and weak macromolecular network. In addition, GSW Gnocchi was more thermally stable than GTW Gnocchi, as evidenced by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).

Hemp flour from Dacia Secuieni and Zenit varieties was added to bread in different proportions (5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) to improve its nutritional properties. The purpose of this paper was to present the advanced nutritional characteristics of these bread samples. The selected varieties of hemp, accepted for human consumption, met the requirements for the maximum accepted level of THC in seeds. The protein content of new products increased from 8.76 to 11.48%, lipids increased from 0.59 to 5.41%, mineral content from 1.33 to 1.62%, and fiber content from 1.17 to 5.84%. Elasticity and porosity decreased from 95.51 to 80% and 78.65 to 72.24%, respectively. K, Mg, Ca, P, Mn and Fe are the main mineral substances in bread with addition of hemp flour from the Dacia Secuieni and Zenit varieties. The total amount of unsaturated fatty acids in the bread samples with hemp flour ranged from 67.93 g/100 g and 69.82 g/100 g. Eight amino acids were identified, of which three were essential (lysine, phenylalanine, histidine). Lysine, the deficient amino acid in wheat bread, increased from 0.003 to 0.101 g/100 g. Sucrose and fructose decreased with the addition of hemp flour, and glucose has not been identified. The amount of yeasts and molds decreased in the first 3 days of storage. Regarding the textural profile, the best results were obtained for the samples with 5% addition. In conclusion, bread with the addition of hemp flour has been shown to have superior nutritional properties to wheat bread.

Malnutrition is a serious problem in post-stroke patients. Importantly, it intensifies with hospitalization, and is related to both somatic and psychological reasons, as well as is associated with the insufficient knowledge of people who accompany the patient. Malnutrition is a negative prognostic factor, leading to a reduction in the quality of life. Moreover, this condition significantly extends hospitalization time, increases the frequency of treatment in intensive care units, and negatively affects the effectiveness of rehabilitation. Obtaining growing data on the therapeutic effectiveness of new compounds of natural origin is possible through the use of pharmacodynamic and analytical methods to assess their therapeutic properties. The proper supply of nutrients, as well as compounds of natural origin, is an important element of post-stroke therapy, due to their strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective and neuroplasticity enhancing properties. Taking the above into account, in this review we present the current state of knowledge on the benefits of using selected substances of natural origin in patients after cerebral stroke.

The advanced characterization of flour from hemp seeds (edible fruits of Cannabis sativa L.) from the Dacia Secuieni and Zenit varieties, compared to wheat flour, was studied in this research. The aim was to present the characterization of 2 varieties, out of the 70 accepted in Europe, for human consumption. The varieties selected from hemp meet the THC level requirement (0.3 or 0.2% of the dry weight of the reproductive part of the female flowering plant) in seeds. Hemp flour was obtained by grinding. The flour samples were evaluated for physicochemical parameters (moisture, crude protein, lipids, ash, crude fiber), the content of micro and macro elements, fatty acids, amino acids, and carbohydrates. The total proteins in hemp flour are found in larger quantities by over 35% compared to wheat flour, and the lipids reach the threshold of 28%. The amount of mineral substances exceeds 3% in hemp flour, and the fibers exceed 26%, compared to 0.61% for wheat flour. The predominant mineral substances were K, Ca, Mg, p, Fe, and Mn. The predominant fatty acids were the unsaturated ones, predominantly being linoleic acid, followed by oleic and gamma-linoleic acid. In the case of amino acids, the highest amount is found in glutamic acid for hemp flours. As for carbohydrates, sucrose is found in the largest amount, followed by glucose and fructose. In conclusion, hemp flours have superior non-traditional characteristics to wheat flour, being a potential raw material for fortifying food or using them as such, having beneficial effects of consumption on the proper functioning of the human body.
