Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) causes sleep fragmentation and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). OSA has been hypothesised to impair the circadian sleep-wake rhythm, and this dysregulation may in turn exacerbate OSA-related diurnal symptoms. Hence, this study aimed to assess the sleep-wake rhythm through actigraphy, and its relationship with EDS in patients with untreated OSA. Patients with moderate-severe OSA (apnea-hypopnea index ≥15/h) and healthy controls (HC) underwent a 7-day actigraphic recording to evaluate the sleep-wake rhythm. Participants underwent a sleep medicine visit and completed the self-report questionnaires assessing EDS (Epworth sleepiness scale, ESS), sleep quality (Pittsburgh sleep quality index, PSQI), and chronotype (morningness-eveningness questionnaire, MEQ). This study included 48 OSA patients (72.9% males; mean age 56.48 ± 9.53 years), and 22 HC (45.5% males; mean age 53.73 ± 18.20 years). After controlling for MEQ scores, actigraphic recording showed that the OSA patients present a lower sleep time (p = 0.011) and sleep efficiency (p = 0.013), as well as a higher sleep latency (p = 0.047), and sleep fragmentation (p = 0.029) than the HC. Regarding the sleep-wake rhythm actigraphic parameters, the OSA patients showed a lower average activity during the most active 10-hour period (p = 0.036) and a lower day/night activity ratio (p = 0.007) than the HC. Patients with OSA also reported higher ESS (p = 0.005) and PSQI scores (p < 0.001), and a chronotype less of morning type (p = 0.027) than the HC. In conclusion, this study documented a reduced diurnal motor activity and lower day/night activity ratio in OSA patients than in controls. These findings suggest a dysregulation of the circadian sleep-wake rhythm in OSA, possibly related to both EDS and reduced daytime motor activity.

Marek's disease virus (MDV) infection causes immunosuppression in the host, ultimately inducing tumor formation and causing significant economic losses to the poultry industry. While the abnormal activation of the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway is closely associated with the occurrence and development of tumors. However, the relationship between MDV and the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway remains unclear. In this study, we found that the MDV RB1B strain, but not the MDV vaccine strain CVI988, activated the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway by increasing the phosphorylation level of GSK-3ß in chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF). In vivo infection experiments in SPF chickens also confirmed that the RB1B strain activated the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway, while the CVI988 strain did not lead to its activation. Moreover, unlike the Meq protein encoded by the CVI988 strain, the Meq protein encoded by the RB1B strain specifically activated the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway in CEF cells. The findings from these studies extend our understanding of the regulation of Wnt/ß-catenin signaling by MDV, which make a new contribution to understanding the virus-host interactions of MDV.

Marek's disease virus (MDV) has become an increasingly virulent pathogen in the poultry industry despite vaccination efforts to control it. Brazil has experienced a significant rise of Marek's disease (MD) outbreaks in recent years. Our study aimed to analyze the complete meq gene sequences to understand the molecular epidemiological basis of MD outbreaks in Brazilian vaccinated layer farms. We detected a high incidence rate of visceral MD (67.74%) and multiple circulating MDV strains. The most prevalent and geographically widespread genotype presented several clinical and molecular characteristics of a highly virulent strain and evolving under positive selective pressure. Phylogenetic and phylogeographic analysis revealed a closer relationship with strains from the USA and Japan. This study sheds light on the circulation of MDV strains capable of infecting vaccinated birds. We emphasize the urgency of adopting preventive measures to manage MDV outbreaks threatening the poultry farming industry.

Marek's disease (MD), caused by Mardivirus gallidalpha 2 (GaAHV-2), also known as MD virus (MDV), is a lymphoproliferative disease that primarily affects chickens. Recently, MDV has been detected in lymphomatous tumors in turkeys in various countries. Between 2021 and 2023, three cases ranging from no to severe clinical disorders (depression, lameness, and increased mortality) occurred in commercial turkey flocks in Slovenia. In all cases, MDV was detected by PCR in DNA samples extracted from organs developing tumor infiltrations. Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the meq gene revealed that the GaAHV-2 detected has molecular features of a very virulent pathotype and genetic similarity with GaAHV-2 detected in chickens in Tunisia. This is the first report of MDV in commercial turkeys in Slovenia.

Fifty-seven Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2) isolates, collected during a 30-year period (1990-2019) from commercial poultry flocks affected by Marek's disease (MD), were molecularly characterised. The GaHV-2 meq gene was amplified and sequenced to evaluate the virus virulence, based on the number of PPPPs within the proline-rich repeats (PRRs) of its transactivation domain. The present illustration of virus virulence evaluation on a large scale of field virus isolates by molecular analysis exemplifies the practical benefit and usefulness of the molecular marker in commercial GaVH-2 isolates. The alternative assay of GaVH-2 virulence pathotyping is the classical Gold Standard ADOL method, which is difficult and impossible to employ on a large scale using the Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) chicks of the ADOL strains kept in isolators for two months. The phylogenetic analysis performed in the present study showed that the meq gene amino acid sequences of the 57 Israeli strains divide into 16 phylogenetic branches. The virulence evaluation was performed in comparison with 36 GaHV-2 prototype strains, previously characterised by the in vivo Gold Standard ADOL assay. The results obtained revealed that the GaHV-2 strains circulating in Israel have evolved into a higher virulence potential during the years, as the four-proline stretches number in the meq gene decreased over the investigated period, typically of very virulent virus prototypes. The present study supports the meq gene molecular markers for the assessment of field GaVH-2 strains virulence.

Marek's disease virus (MDV) causes malignant lymphoma (Marek's disease; MD) in chickens. The Meq protein is essential for tumorigenesis since it regulates the expression of host and viral genes. Previously, we reported that the deletion of the short isoform of Meq (S-Meq) decreases the pathogenicity of MDV. Recently, we identified a further short isoform of Meq (very short isoform of Meq, VS-Meq) in chickens with MD in Japan. A 64-amino-acid deletion was confirmed at the C-terminus of VS-Meq. We measured the transcriptional regulation by VS-Meq in three gene promoters to investigate the effect of VS-Meq on protein function. Wild-type VS-Meq decreased the transrepression of the pp38 promoter but did not alter the transactivation activity of the Meq and Bcl-2 promoters. The deletion in VS-Meq did not affect the activity of the pp38 promoter but enhanced the transactivation activities of the Meq and Bcl-2 promoters. Collectively, the deletion of VS-Meq potentially enhanced the activity of the Meq promoter, while other amino acid sequences in wild-type VS-Meq seemed to affect the weak transrepression of the pp38 promoter. Further investigation is required to clarify the effects of these changes on pathogenicity.

Background: Approximately half of patients with multiple sclerosis (PWMS) experience sleep disorders or changes in the circadian rhythm, that may further promote the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. As the prevalence of chronotypes among PWMS remains unclear, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence of chronotypes among Lithuanian PWMS; to assess the relationship of chronotypes with depression, anxiety, and fatigue symptoms; and to compare these results with those of healthy controls. Methods: We enrolled 101 PWMS and 100 healthy controls. We included 130 (64.7%) and 71 (35.3%) women and men, respectively. The median age of all respondents was 39 [interquartile range (IQR) 20.75] years. Participants were assessed using general questionnaire, Horne-Östberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Shortened Fatigue Questionnaire (SFQ). Chronotypes were identified based on the total MEQ score. Results: The average MEQ scores of the PWMS and control groups were 54 (IQR 15.0) and 53.5 (IQR 13), respectively, which indicated the intermediate chronotype. There was no significant between-group difference in the prevalence of chronotypes (p = 0.893). In both groups, individuals with moderate evening and intermediate chronotypes showed higher average HADS depression scores (p = 0.022). Further, in both groups, the individuals with the evening chronotype showed the highest average HADS anxiety scores (p = 0.001). The PWMS group had a higher average SFQ score than the control group (p < 0.001). High SFQ scores were more common among PWMS who had the intermediate (p < 0.001) and morning chronotypes (p = 0.011). The fatigue level was higher among healthy individuals with the evening chronotype (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The most common chronotype for PWMS and healthy controls was the intermediate chronotype. Further, in both groups, higher HADS depression and anxiety scores were associated with the evening chronotype. Fatigue was more commonly found in healthy controls with the evening, and in PWMS - with intermediate and morning chronotypes.

Medication administration errors could result in severe complications in critical care units. This study investigated an association between chronotype, sleep quality and medication errors among essential nurses of care in Qazvin teaching hospitals in Iran. In this multicenter, cross-sectional study, all registered nurses of critical care units of Qazvin teaching hospitals were recruited. Data were collected through anonymous questionnaires, including socio-demographic data, Morning-Evening Questionnaire (MEQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and medication errors data. Data were analyzed with SPSS v.24 by using the Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, and logistic regression analysis. P values less than 0.05 were considered significant. The mean age and work experience were 33.12 ± 6.74 and 9.11 ± 5.96, respectively. One hundred sixty-six nurses (96%) have been working in rotating shifts. Nurses with intermediate chronotypes were predominant (n = 122; 70.5%). The majority of nurses (68.2%) had poor sleep quality (n = 118). Logistic regression analysis showed eveningness chronotype was associated with 4.743 fold increased risk of medication error (P < 0.033). No association was found between medication error and sleep quality (p < 0.95). There was no significant relationship between chronotype and sleep quality (P < 0.257). Our study showed that nurses with eveningness chronotype make more medication errors; therefore, considering the individual circadian preference before deciding on their shift timing assignment will be an important issue in reducing nurses' medication errors and improving patient safety in critical care units.

Marek's disease (MD) is caused by oncogenic MD virus serotype 1 (MDV1) and is characterized by lymphoproliferative lesions resulting in high morbidity and mortality in chickens. Despite being ubiquitous on poultry farms, there is a dearth of information on its molecular characteristics in Nigeria. This study aimed at characterizing three virulence genes (Meq, pp38, and vIL-8) of MDV1 from chickens in Ogun state, Nigeria. Blood, feather quill, and tumour samples of chickens from different commercial poultry farms in Ogun State were pooled, spotted on 107 FTA cards, and screened for MDV1 by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Phylogenetic analysis was carried out to compare Nigerian MDV1 Meq, pp38, and vIL-8 genes sequences with the published references. Thirteen samples were MDV1-positive and the Meq, as well as pp38, and vIL-8 genes from the different samples were 100% identical. The Meq genes contained 339 amino acids (aa) with three PPPP motifs in the transactivation domain and two interruptions of the PPPP motifs due to proline-to-arginine substitutions at positions 176 and 217 resulting in a 20.88% proline composition. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the Meq gene clustered with strains from Egypt and very virulent ATE2539 strain from Hungary. Mutations were observed in the pp38 protein (at positions 107 and 109) and vIL-8 protein (at positions 4 and 31). Based on the molecular analysis of the three genes, the results indicate the presence of MDV1 with virulence signatures; therefore, further studies on in vivo pathotyping of Nigerian MDV1 from all states should be performed.RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS Meq, pp38 and vIL-8 genes were 100% identical between Nigerian MDV strains.Proline content in Nigerian meq gene was 20.88% with two PPPP motifs interruptions.Meq, pp38 and vIL-8 genes of Nigerian MDV were similar to Egyptian and Indian strains.

Marek's disease (MD) caused by pathogenic Marek's disease virus type 1 (MDV-1) is one of the most important neoplastic diseases of poultry. MDV-1-encoded unique Meq protein is the major oncoprotein and the availability of Meq-specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) is crucial for revealing MDV pathogenesis/oncogenesis. Using synthesized polypeptides from conserved hydrophilic regions of the Meq protein as immunogens, together with hybridoma technology and primary screening by cross immunofluorescence assay (IFA) on Meq-deleted MDV-1 viruses generated by CRISPR/Cas9-gene editing, a total of five positive hybridomas were generated. Four of these hybridomas, namely 2A9, 5A7, 7F9 and 8G11, were further confirmed to secrete specific antibodies against Meq as confirmed by the IFA staining of 293T cells overexpressing Meq. Confocal microscopic analysis of cells stained with these antibodies confirmed the nuclear localization of Meq in MDV-infected CEF cells and MDV-transformed MSB-1 cells. Furthermore, two mAb hybridoma clones, 2A9-B12 and 8G11-B2 derived from 2A9 and 8G11, respectively, displayed high specificity for Meq proteins of MDV-1 strains with diverse virulence. Our data presented here, using synthesized polypeptide immunization combined with cross IFA staining on CRISPR/Cas9 gene-edited viruses, has provided a new efficient approach for future generation of specific mAbs against viral proteins.

PURPOSE: Infertility is a stressful condition for couples and can affect patients' circadian rhythm and sleep quality. The goal of this study is to assess differences in chronotype and sleep quality between infertile and fertile people. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted. The infertile patient population consisted study group. Primiparous patients without any known gynecological disease who presented for routine cervical cancer screening follow-up were included in the control group. The Turkish version of the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) and Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores were evaluated between groups. RESULTS: A total of 227 patients were assessed. There were 110 patients in the study (infertile) group and 117 patients in the control (fertile) group. The evening chronotype proportion (23.6 vs. 0.9%, p < 0.001) was higher in the infertile group. The median of MEQ score was significantly higher in the fertile patients (50, IQR = 43 - 55 vs. 56, IQR = 51 - 59; p < 0.001), and the median of PSQI score was significantly higher in the infertile patients (5, IQR = 4 - 6, vs. 4, IQR = 3 - 5; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we found significantly worse sleep quality, and more evening chronotype in the patients with infertility.

There has been a revival of research that studies the subjective effects of psychedelic drugs on humans. Areas of health science have been studying their possible therapeutic benefits, and psychological measurement instruments are being developed as the studies progress. However, these instruments currently suffer criticism regarding their number and evidence of psychometric quality. This study aims to review which psychometric instruments are available to assess subjective states induced by psychedelics. We systematically searched five databases (Web of Science, Academic Search Premier, EMBASE, CINAHL and PubMed) using psychometrics and psychedelics related terms identifying studies published from 1990 to 2021. Of 857 articles generated from the systematic-search, fifteen met our criteria and were included in the review, evaluating nine instruments: MEQ, 5D-ASC, HRS, PSI, EDI, CEQ, EBI, EDI and PIQ. Eight dealing with phenomenological aspects of the psychedelic experience and one as a screening tool for psychotic or manic episode. The purpose of each instrument, the number of items in each version, the type of scale and their elaboration process were described. The number of instruments used in psychedelic research is growing steadily, but there are still many other parts of the psychedelic experience that lack measurement.

Marek's disease is a significant illness in chickens and a potential threat to the poultry industry worldwide. Marek's disease virus (MDV) causes immunosuppression and lymphoproliferative disease in chickens, but the turkey is an unusual host for the virus, and tumors caused by MDV in turkeys are unique. This study sampled 15 asymptomatic commercial turkey flocks (five spleens from each flock) at slaughter. Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2) was identified by PCR of spleen samples of two flocks. A phylogenetic analysis of the Meq gene was also performed. Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis revealed that the turkey GaHV-2 had genetic similarity with GaHV-2 strains recently detected in the Iranian commercial layer and breeder turkey flocks. This is the first time MDV has been detected in turkey flocks of Iran, and therefore, further assays including experimental inoculation to demonstrate pathotype characteristics in vivo are needed.

La enfermedad de Marek es una enfermedad importante de los pollos y una amenaza potencial para la industria avícola en todo el mundo. El virus de la enfermedad de Marek (MDV) causa inmunosupresión y una enfermedad linfoproliferativa en pollos, pero el pavo es un huésped inusual para este virus y los tumores causados por el virus de la enfermedad de Marek en pavos son únicos. En este estudio se recolectaron muestras de 15 lotes de pavos comerciales asintomáticos (cinco bazos de cada lote) en el momento del sacrificio. El Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2) fue identificado por PCR de muestras de bazo de dos parvadas. También se realizó un análisis filogenético del gene Meq. La secuenciación y el análisis filogenético revelaron que el GaHV-2 de pavo tenía una similitud genética con las cepas de GaHV-2 detectadas recientemente en parvadas de postura comerciales y de pavos reproductores iraníes. Esta es la primera vez que se detecta el virus de Marek en parvadas de pavos de Irán y, por lo tanto, se necesitan más ensayos, incluida la inoculación experimental, para demostrar las características del patotipo in vivo.

Circadian preferences are frequently used as a synonym for chronotype. Both terms are based on different principles and are measured by a variant questionnaire. We focused on circadian preferences, delimited as an individual preference for the timing of various activities, and their relationship to the selected sociodemographic factors. All participants (n = 2068) filled out online questionnaires including MEQ, MCTQ, and sociodemographic information (age, sex, place of residence, marital status, childcare, education, financial security, physical and mental health). Although the concept of chronotype and circadian preference differ, the mutual correlation was high. Our results of the observed variables are similar to other studies. We revealed evening preference is related to a higher probability of living in a big city, having a single life, a higher risk of smoking, worse health status, and worse financial security. We observed a higher social jet lag among them. Our research complies with previous studies, which found that in some areas, people with evening preferences evince worse results. Due to the evening preference, these people are at a disadvantage, and the society's setting for morning operations can lead to a deepening of these differences. We recommend further research, which would focus on the practical application of results to the everyday life of participants to create preventive programs aimed at reducing the negative impact of evening preferences on life.

Marek's disease virus (MDV) induces immunosuppression and neoplastic disease in chickens. The virus is controllable via an attenuated meq deletion mutant virus, which has the disadvantage of retaining the ability to induce lymphoid organ atrophy. To overcome this deficiency and produce more vaccine candidates, a recombinant MDV was generated from the highly virulent Md5BAC strain, in which both meq and a cytolytic replication-related gene, pp38, were deleted. Replication of the double deletion virus, Md5BAC ΔmeqΔpp38, was comparable with that of the parental virus in vitro. The double deletion virus was shown to be fully attenuated and to reduce lymphoid organ atrophy in vivo. Crucially, Md5BAC ΔmeqΔpp38 confers superior protection against highly virulent virus compared with a commercial vaccine strain, CVI988/Rispens. Transcriptomic profiling indicated that Md5BAC ΔmeqΔpp38 induced a different host immune response from CVI988/Rispens. In summary, a novel, effective, and safe vaccine candidate for prevention and control of MD caused by highly virulent MDV is reported. IMPORTANCE MDV is a highly contagious immunosuppressive and neoplastic pathogen. The virus can be controlled through vaccination via an attenuated meq deletion mutant virus that retains the ability to induce lymphoid organ atrophy. In this study, we overcame the deficiency by generating meq and pp38 double deletion mutant virus. Indeed, the successfully generated meq and pp38 double deletion mutant virus had significantly reduced replication capacity in vivo but not in vitro. It was fully attenuated and conferred superior protection efficacy against very virulent MDV challenge. In addition, the possible immunological protective mechanism of the double deletion mutant virus was shown to be different from that of the gold standard MDV vaccine, CVI988/Rispens. Overall, we successfully generated an attenuated meq deletion mutant virus and widened the range of potential vaccine candidates. Importantly, this study provides for the first time the theoretical basis of vaccination induced by fully attenuated gene-deletion mutant virus.

Mindful eating may play an important role in long-term weight maintenance. In interventions aiming at weight reduction, increasing the levels of mindful eating was associated with higher levels of success and lower levels of weight rebound in the long run. This study aimed to determine the validity and reliability of a mindful eating questionnaire for Romanian adults using Framson's Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ). To calculate the internal (n = 495) and external (n = 45) reliability, a general population sample was taken. Construct validity was assessed using the "known groups" method: dietitians (n = 70), sports professionals (n = 52), and individuals with overweight and obesity (n = 200). Convergent validity tested the association between the MEQ score and demographic characteristics of the total sample (n = 617). The internal (0.72) and external (0.83) reliability were adequate. Dietitians and sports professionals had overall lower scores, meaning more mindful eating compared to the group of individuals with overweight and obesity. The lower mindful eating practice was associated with the presence of excess weight, suboptimal health status perception, higher levels of stress and younger age. The Romanian version of the MEQ is a reliable and valid tool for measuring mindfulness of eating in adults.

Marek's disease (MD) is a highly contagious, lymphoproliferative poultry disease caused by the oncogenic herpesvirus, serotype 1 Marek's disease virus (MDV-1), or Gallid herpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2). MDV strains have shown a continued evolution of virulence leading to immune failure, and MD cases continue to occur or surge. Meq, the major MDV-1 oncoprotein, induces T-cell neoplastic transformation through several mechanisms including inhibition of apoptosis, cell cycle regulation, and serum-anchorage independent growth. There is no current information on the MDV serotypes and pathotypes circulating in vaccinated commercial farms in Iran, where the birds are vaccinated at the hatchery with GaHV-2 and Meleagrid herpesvirus 1 (MeHV-1) vaccines. This study reports the molecular characterization of a GaHV-2 strain detected in 19 flocks of Iranian layer farms exhibiting MDV-1-like clinical signs and visceral lymphomas. Based on sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the Meq gene, the Iranian GaHV-2 isolates could be divided into two separate clades regarding molecular features. The clade containing strains was closely related to Italian, Indian, and Hungarian virulent isolates, and the clade was related to American very virulent plus (vv+) isolates. For the first time, the MDV-1 virus was characterized by an outbreak in poultry flocks in Iran. Although MDV-1 strains obtained in Iran's present outbreak are presumably related to virulent (v) and vv+ pathotypes based on nucleotide, amino acid, and phylogenetic analysis of the viruses, they are not confirmed so far. Thus, it is highly recommended to perform further analyses to demonstrate the pathotype characteristics in vivo.


Caracterización molecular y análisis filogenético del virus de la enfermedad de Marek en Irán. La enfermedad de Marek (MD) es una enfermedad altamente contagiosa linfoproliferativa en la avicultura causada por el herpesvirus oncogénico, el virus de la enfermedad de Marek de serotipo 1 (MDV-1) o Gallid herpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2). Las cepas del virus de Marek han mostrado una evolución continua de virulencia que conduce a una falla inmunológica, y los casos de Marek continúan ocurriendo o aumentando. El gene Meq, codifica la principal oncoproteína de MDV-1, induce la transformación neoplásica de células T a través de varios mecanismos que incluyen la inhibición de la apoptosis, la regulación del ciclo celular y el crecimiento independiente del anclaje sérico. No hay información actual sobre los serotipos y patotipos del virus de Marek que circulan en las granjas comerciales vacunadas en Irán, donde las aves se vacunan en la planta de incubación con las vacunas GaHV-2 y Meleagrid herpesvirus 1 (MeHV-1). Este estudio reporta la caracterización molecular de una cepa del Gallid herpesvirus 2 detectada en 19 lotes de granjas de aves de postura iraníes que presentaron signos clínicos sugestivos del serotipo 1 del virus de la enfermedad de Marek y linfomas viscerales. Según la secuenciación y el análisis filogenético del gene Meq, los aislamientos iraníes de GaHV-2 podrían dividirse en dos clados separados con respecto a las características moleculares. El clado que contenía las cepas estaba estrechamente relacionado con los aislados virulentos de Italia, India y de Hungria y el clado estaba relacionado con los aislados americanos muy virulentos plus (vv+). Por primera vez, el serotipo 1 del virus de la enfermedad de Marek se caracterizó por un brote en parvadas avícolas en Irán. Aunque las cepas del virus de Marek, serotipo 1 obtenidas en el brote actual de Irán están presuntamente relacionadas con patotipos virulentos (v) y muy virulentos plus según el análisis de nucleótidos, aminoácidos y filogenético de los virus, hasta el momento no se han confirmado. Por lo tanto, se recomienda realizar más análisis para demostrar las características del patotipo in vivo.

Overweight and obesity are major public health challenges in China, and increasingly among young people. Valid measures are needed to examine the relationship between eating styles and weight to advance understanding and intervention. Mindful approaches show promise in weight management. This study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of a Chinese version of Mindful Eating Questionnaire (C-MEQ). Study 1 used a think aloud methodology to examine Chinese young adults' (n = 7) and adolescents' (n = 10) comprehension of C-MEQ items. Findings informed revision of problematic items before a full validation study (Study 2) of the revised C-MEQ (C-MEQ-R) in a sample of 430 Chinese young adults. In Study 1, both groups misinterpreted ten items as asking about noticing about whether behaviour ever occurred rather than noticing experience, indicating the lack of content validity of the C-MEQ. Ten items were rephrased to emphasise mindful (intentional) noticing in the moment. In Study 2, confirmatory factor analysis revealed an inadequate fit to the original MEQ structure. Exploratory Structural Equation Model of the C-MEQ-R revealed five distinct domains. The C-MEQ-R showed better psychometric properties than the C-MEQ, and significant associations with mindfulness, emotional eating, external eating and BMI in expected directions. However, psychometric limitations including low internal reliability, inadequate coherence of the subscales and limited construct validity were identified. These findings contribute to the progress in the measurement of mindful eating by highlighting the weaknesses of the MEQ. Further research is called to adopt and validate alternative mindful eating measurements to assess mindful eating in Chinese adolescents and young adults.

As neoplastic viruses have been affecting Iranian chicken farms more frequently in recent years, the first step in prevention may therefore be to genetically characterize and systematically identify their source and origin. Recently, we published a phylogenetic analysis based on the meq gene of Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2, commonly known as serotype 1 Marek's disease virus (MDV-1), that circulated in Iranian backyard and commercial chickens. In the current study, we are reporting for the first time the identification of a 298 aa meq protein containing only two PPPP motifs from an MDV-1-infected unvaccinated backyard turkey. This protein length has never been reported from any turkey species before. According to phylogenetic analysis, a close genetic relationship (0.68%) to several chicken-origin isolates such as the American vv + 648A strain was found. In addition, we identified a standard meq protein from a MDV-1-infected commercial chicken farm. In corroboration with our previous finding from other Iranian provinces, it is likely that the highly identical MDV-1 viruses currently circulating in Iranian chicken farms, which may be indicative of human role in the spread of the virus, have similar Eurasian origin. Our data suggest that regardless of the meq size, MDV-1 circulating in Iran are from different origins. On the other hand, meq sequences from bird species other than chicken have been reported but are very few. Our investigation suggests MDV-1 circulating in turkey do not have species-specific sequences.

Marek's disease is an infectious disease in poultry that usually appears in neural and visceral tumors. This disease is caused by Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2 infection in lymphocytes, and its meq gene is commonly used in virulent studies for coding the key protein functional in oncogenic transformation of the lymphocytes. Although vaccines have been introduced in many countries to control its spread and are proven to be efficient, recent records show a decline of such efficiency due to viral evolution. In this study, we reviewed the outbreak of Marek's disease in Asia for the last 10 years, together with associated meq sequences, finding a total of 36 studies recording outbreaks with 132 viral strains in 12 countries. The visceral type is the most common (13 in 16 studies) form of Marek's disease, but additional unobserved neural changes may exist. MD induces liver lymphoma most frequently (11 in 14 studies), and tumors were also found in spleen, kidney, heart, gizzard, skin, intestine, lung, and sciatic nerve. Twelve viral strains distributed in China have been reported to escape the CVI988 vaccine, reaching a mortality rate of more than 30%. Phylogenetic analyses show the internal connection between the Middle East (Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia), South Asia (India, Indonesia), and East Asia (China and Japan), while external viral communications might occasionally occur. In 18 strains with both sequential and mortality data, amino acid alignment showed several point substitutions that may be related to its virulence. We suggest more behavioral monitoring in Marek's disease-endemic regions and further studies on strain virulence, together with its Meq protein structural changes.
