In the continuously advancing field of mechanical engineering, digitalization is bringing a major transformation, specifically with the concept of digital twins. Digital twins are dynamic digital models of real-world systems and processes, crucial for Industry 4.0 and the emerging Industry 5.0, which are changing how humans and machines work together in manufacturing. This paper explores the combination of physics-based and data-driven modeling using advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. This approach provides a comprehensive understanding of mechanical systems, improving materials design and manufacturing processes. The focus is on the advanced 42SiCr alloy, where AI-driven digital twinning is used to optimize cooling rates during Quenching and Partitioning (Q-P) treatments. This leads to significant improvements in the mechanical properties of 42SiCr steel. Given its complex properties influenced by various factors, this alloy is perfect for digital twinning. The Q-P heat treatment process not only restores the material's deformability but also gives it advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) properties. The findings show how AI and ML can effectively guide the development of high-strength steels and enhance their treatment processes. Additionally, integrating digital twins with new technologies like the Metaverse offers exciting possibilities for simulated production, remote monitoring, and collaborative design. By establishing a clear workflow from physical to digital twins and presenting empirical results, this paper connects theoretical modeling with practical applications, paving the way for smarter manufacturing solutions in mechanical engineering. Furthermore, this paper analyzes how digital twins can be integrated into advanced technologies like the Metaverse, opening up new possibilities for simulated production, remote monitoring, design collaboration, training simulations, analytics, and complete supply chain visibility. This integration is a crucial step toward realizing the full potential of digitalization in mechanical engineering.

This article presents the data obtained from a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on the use of metaverse and extended technologies for immersive journalism [1]. Boolean operators, both in English and Spanish, were used to retrieve scientific literature using Publish or Perish 8 software on Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar between 2017 and 2022. After finding all the scientific literature, a methodological process was carried out using selection criteria and following the PRISMA model to obtain a total sample of 61 scientific articles. The DESLOCIS framework was used for the evaluation and quantitative and qualitative analysis of the retrieved data. The first dataset [2] contains the metadata of the retrieved publications according to the phases of the PRISMA statement. The second dataset [3] contains the characteristics of these publications according to the DESLOCIS framework. The data offer the possibility to develop new longitudinal studies and meta-analyzes in the field of immersive journalism.

This issue of the Biomedical Journal features a special section exploring mycobiota. Three articles examine the role of fungi in common metabolic disorders in, Clostridium difficile infection, and in immunocompromised patients. Additionally, the potential and challenges of the metaverse in healthcare are reviewed, alongside a holistic approach to improve patient outcomes in pancreatic cancer. In this issue also possible mechanism contributing to long COVID are discussed, as well as biomarkers that effectively predict sepsis outcomes, and key targets in osteosarcoma progression. Moreover, factors leading to peri-intubation cardiac arrest are analyzed, healthcare strategies from various regions are employed to predict cardiovascular events in Asian populations, two approaches to cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistula are compared, and a combination therapy against soft tissue sarcoma is presented.

Current rates of mental illness are worrisome. Mental illness mainly affects females and younger age groups. The use of the internet to deliver mental health care has been growing since 2020 and includes the implementation of novel mental health treatments using virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence. A new three dimensional digital environment, known as the metaverse, has emerged as the next version of the Internet. Artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality will create fully immersive, experiential, and interactive online environments in the metaverse. People will use a unique avatar to do anything they do in their "real" lives, including seeking and receiving mental health care. In this opinion review, we reflect on how the metaverse could reshape how we deliver mental health treatment, its opportunities, and its challenges.

Plastic surgeons routinely use 3D-models in their clinical practice, from 3D-photography and surface imaging to 3D-segmentations from radiological scans. However, these models continue to be viewed on flattened 2D screens that do not enable an intuitive understanding of 3D-relationships and cause challenges regarding collaboration with colleagues. The Metaverse has been proposed as a new age of applications building on modern Mixed Reality headset technology that allows remote collaboration on virtual 3D-models in a shared physical-virtual space in real-time. We demonstrate the first use of the Metaverse in the context of reconstructive surgery, focusing on preoperative planning discussions and trainee education. Using a HoloLens headset with the Microsoft Mesh application, we performed planning sessions for 4 DIEP-flaps in our reconstructive metaverse on virtual patient-models segmented from routine CT angiography. In these sessions, surgeons discuss perforator anatomy and perforator selection strategies whilst comprehensively assessing the respective models. We demonstrate the workflow for a one-on-one interaction between an attending surgeon and a trainee in a video featuring both viewpoints as seen through the headset. We believe the Metaverse will provide novel opportunities to use the 3D-models that are already created in everyday plastic surgery practice in a more collaborative, immersive, accessible, and educational manner.

The metaverse is a virtual world that is being developed to allow people to interact with each other and with digital objects in a more immersive way. It involves the convergence of three major technological trends: telepresence, the digital twin, and blockchain. Telepresence is the ability of people to "be together" in a virtual way while not being close to each other. The digital twin is a virtual, digital equivalent of a patient, a medical device or even a hospital. Blockchain can be used by patients to keep their personal medical records secure. In medicine and healthcare, the metaverse could be used in several ways: (1) virtual medical consultations; (2) medical education and training; (3) patient education; (4) medical research; (5) drug development; (6) therapy and support; (7) laboratory medicine. The metaverse has the potential to enable more personalized, efficient, and accessible healthcare, improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. However, the implementation of the metaverse in medicine and healthcare will require careful consideration of ethical and privacy concerns, as well as social, technical and regulatory challenges. Overall, the future of the metaverse in healthcare looks bright, but new metaverse-specific laws should be created to help overcome any potential downsides.

By integrating various academic perspectives, this analysis highlights the Metaverse's significant impact across various sectors, emphasizing its potential to reshape digital interaction paradigms. The investigation reveals usability as a cornerstone for user engagement, demonstrating how social dynamics profoundly influence user behaviors and choices within virtual environments. Furthermore, the study outlines interoperability as a paramount challenge, advocating for establishing unified protocols and technologies to facilitate seamless experiences across disparate Metaverse platforms. It advocates for the adoption of inclusive, ergonomically oriented designs aimed at enhancing user participation. It addresses the ethical and societal challenges posed by the Metaverse, including concerns related to digital harassment, invasive marketing practices, and breaches of privacy. Additionally, the review identifies existing gaps in the literature, particularly regarding the Metaverse's implications for healthcare, its impact on educational outcomes, and the urgent need for empirical data concerning its long-term effects on user psychology and behavior. By providing a comprehensive synthesis of the current understanding of user experiences and challenges within the Metaverse, this paper contributes to the academic dialogue, laying the groundwork for future research initiatives. It aims to steer the development of the Metaverse towards a trajectory that is ethically sound, socially responsible, inclusive, and aligned with societal expectations, thereby fostering a digital realm that upholds the highest standards of integrity and inclusivity.

In recent years, with the shift of focus in metaverse research toward content exchange and social interaction, breaking through the current bottleneck of audio-visual media interaction has become an urgent issue. The use of brain-machine interfaces for sensory simulation is one of the proposed solutions. Currently, brain-machine interfaces have demonstrated irreplaceable potential as physiological signal acquisition tools in various fields within the metaverse. This study explores three application scenarios: generative art in the metaverse, serious gaming for healthcare in metaverse medicine, and brain-machine interface applications for facial expression synthesis in the virtual society of the metaverse. It investigates existing commercial products and patents (such as MindWave Mobile, GVS, and Galea), draws analogies with the development processes of network security and neurosecurity, bioethics and neuroethics, and discusses the challenges and potential issues that may arise when brain-machine interfaces mature and are widely applied. Furthermore, it looks ahead to the diverse possibilities of deep and varied applications of brain-machine interfaces in the metaverse in the future.

Despite the potential of meta-education to transform higher education, there remains a scarcity of research investigating students' adoption intentions. This study aimed to identify factors influencing students' intentions to adopt meta-education using an extended Decomposed Theory of Planned Behavior model (DTPB). Data was collected via an online survey of 596 higher education students from Jordan who were purposefully selected. Structural equation modeling using partial least squares analysis revealed attitude, social influence, and perceived behavioral control as key antecedents of adoption intention. Furthermore, newly added variables including perceived enjoyment, herd behavior, student autonomy, and student innovativeness showed efficiency in explaining variance in attitude, social influence, and perceived behavioral control. Overall, the extended model provided meaningful insights on factors driving students' willingness to adopt meta-education. The study contributes to theory by extending the decomposed TPB model in the context of emerging educational technologies. It also provides practical implications for policymakers and educators aiming to encourage meta-education adoption.

Introduction: Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is vital, but claustrophobia affects 10% of patients. The metaverse, an immersive virtual and augmented reality environment, has healthcare potential. We present a metaverse-based CMR simulation for claustrophobic patients. Methods: Three cardiomyopathy patients, initially CMR-refusing due to claustrophobia, received training via a virtual reality headset in a metaverse-based virtual hospital. Training efficacy was assessed through questionnaires and anxiety scales. Results: The patients successfully completed metaverse-based training, adapting to the CMR simulation. On CMR day, all entered the machine without issues and with reduced anxiety. Patients found the training useful, suggesting platform familiarization. Discussion: Our study demonstrates the metaverse's potential in alleviating CMR-related claustrophobia. The immersive nature enhances patient preparation, although usability improvements are needed. Further research should compare this approach with alternatives.


Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is a vital tool for diagnosing heart problems, but some patients cannot undergo it due to claustrophobia. To address this, researchers are exploring new methods like hypnosis and simulations. One emerging technology, the metaverse, a 3D virtual reality (VR) environment, is being tested in healthcare. This study created a metaverse-based simulation to help claustrophobic patients prepare for CMR. Three patients with heart issues were given VR headsets to access a virtual hospital in the metaverse. Inside, they were trained for CMR step by step, experiencing the process and sounds realistically. Training was done 1 week, 3 days, and 1 day before the real CMR. Anxiety levels were measured. All patients completed the virtual training without issues. During the first simulations, some could not complete entering the virtual CMR machine due to anxiety. However, by the final simulation, all succeeded. On CMR day, all completed the scan without problems, and their anxiety levels decreased significantly from the initial training. Patients found the training helpful, but the platform's usability needed improvement. The study demonstrates that metaverse-based simulations can help patients overcome claustrophobia to successfully undergo CMR. This technology holds promise for simulating medical situations, easing patient fears, and improving preparation. However, further work is needed to make it user-friendly and accessible without assistance. This study encourages more research to assess the usefulness of the metaverse for broader patient groups, comparing it with other methods like hypnosis or sedation.

The idea of the "metaverse" is a relatively recent technological development. The industries that are most supportive of these developments include finance, entertainment, and communication. In addition to these, the healthcare domain has been added to the list of domains that benefit from the metaverse recently. Within the metaverse, research is being conducted on a wide range of medical topics, including conferences and seminars, surgical simulators, awareness campaigns, research projects, and much more. The metaverse is a flexible and highly customizable virtual digital platform that can be configured to suit specific needs, making it an adaptable instrument for medical advancement. These domains, together with their benefits and drawbacks, are thoroughly covered in this review article, which raises the discussion of the need for medical productivity. These studies have undergone a minimum amount of research and experimentation, and the findings are fair from an investigative standpoint. This review article's major goal is to make a provocative remark about metaverse domains and how they have already been used and might be used as an essential operational tool in the field of medicine in the future. Consequently, the objective of the present study is to review the current literature on post-COVID-19 pandemic development that connected the metaverse with the prevention and treatment of diseases, medical education and training, and expansion of available functionalities in research settings.

The metaverse appears to be a composite concept and a complex environment from an ontological perspective and from a purely dimensional point of view. Exploring its defining features not only allows one to identify the nature and effects of the social relations existing therein, but also influences the legal reading of what it contains and produces. Bringing to light the peculiar characteristics of the metaverse-for which the dichotomy between "real" and "virtual" sounds outdated-this article emphasizes the urgency to rethink the traditional forms of interpretation and design of preventive and repressive measures to counter deviant and illegal phenomena of a violent nature.

The metaverse is a digital space that empowers users to interact socially, using new and specific technologies, to generate value and co-create experiences. This paper provides a framework for organising the themes discussed in pioneering literature. An adaptation of the PRISMA process was used to explain the methodology applied. The results showed that more than 84 % of studies on the metaverse have been published since 2020. Technologies such as augmented reality and artificial intelligence are positioned as the basic themes, and decision-making and human-machine interface are emerging themes. This paper constitutes an original contribution as it also presents the highlights and structure of the main themes on metaverse. Additionally, it develops an analytical framework for understanding the metaverse value creation. Therefore, this paper represents a starting point for a reflection on the applications of the metaverse that can contribute to the achievement of productive and valuable progress in various fields of research.

Puerto de Cajas serves as a vital high-altitude passage in Ecuador, connecting the coastal region to the city of Cuenca. The stability of this rocky massif is carefully managed through the assessment of blocks and discontinuities, ensuring safe travel. This study presents a novel approach, employing rapid and cost-effective methods to evaluate an unexplored area within the protected expanse of Cajas. Using terrestrial photogrammetry and strategically positioned geomechanical stations along the slopes, we generated a detailed point cloud capturing elusive terrain features. We have used terrestrial photogrammetry for digitalization of the slope. Validation of the collected data was achieved by comparing directional data from Cloud Compare software with manual readings using a digital compass integrated in a phone at control points. The analysis encompasses three slopes, employing the SMR, Q-slope, and kinematic methodologies. Results from the SMR system closely align with kinematic analysis, indicating satisfactory slope quality. Nonetheless, continued vigilance in stability control remains imperative for ensuring road safety and preserving the site's integrity. Moreover, this research lays the groundwork for the creation of a publicly accessible 3D repository, enhancing visualization capabilities through Google Virtual Reality. This initiative not only aids in replicating the findings but also facilitates access to an augmented reality environment, thereby fostering collaborative research endeavors.

PURPOSE: This systematic review aims to provide an overview of the current knowledge on the role of the metaverse, augmented reality, and virtual reality in reverse shoulder arthroplasty. METHODS: A systematic review was performed using the PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive review of the applications of the metaverse, augmented reality, and virtual reality in in-vivo intraoperative navigation, in the training of orthopedic residents, and in the latest innovations proposed in ex-vivo studies was conducted. RESULTS: A total of 22 articles were included in the review. Data on navigated shoulder arthroplasty was extracted from 14 articles: seven hundred ninety-three patients treated with intraoperative navigated rTSA or aTSA were included. Also, three randomized control trials (RCTs) reported outcomes on a total of fifty-three orthopedics surgical residents and doctors receiving VR-based training for rTSA, which were also included in the review. Three studies reporting the latest VR and AR-based rTSA applications and two proof of concept studies were also included in the review. CONCLUSIONS: The metaverse, augmented reality, and virtual reality present immense potential for the future of orthopedic surgery. As these technologies advance, it is crucial to conduct additional research, foster development, and seamlessly integrate them into surgical education to fully harness their capabilities and transform the field. This evolution promises enhanced accuracy, expanded training opportunities, and improved surgical planning capabilities.

BACKGROUND: Traditional medical education often lacks contextual experience, hindering students' ability to effectively apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. The integration of the metaverse into medical education holds great enormous promise for addressing educational disparities, particularly in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) accompanied by rapid technological advancements. This commentary paper aimed to address the potential of the metaverse in enhancing basic sciences education within the constraints faced by universities in LMICs. We also addressed learning design challenges by proposing fundamental design elements and a suggested conceptual framework for developing metaverse-based teaching methods.The goal is to assist educators and medical practitioners in comprehensivley understanding key factors in immersive teaching and learning. DISCUSSION: By immersing medical students in virtual scenarios mimicking real medical settings and patient interactions, the metaverse enables practice in clinical decision-making, interpersonal skills, and exposure to complex medical situations in a controlled environment. These simulations can be customized to reflect local healthcare challenges, preparing medical students to tackle specific community needs. Various disciplines, including anatomy, physiology, pharmacy, dentistry, and pathology, have begun leveraging the metaverse to offer immersive learning experiences, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and facilitate authentic assessments. However, financial constraints pose a significant barrier to widespread adoption, particularly in resource-limited settings like LMICs. Addressing these challenges is crucial to realizing the full potential of metaverse technology in medical education. CONCLUSION: The metaverse offers a promising solution for enhancing medical education by providing immersive, context-rich learning experiences. This paper proposes a conceptual framework and fundamental design elements to aid faculty educators and medical practitioners in effectively incorporating metaverse technology into their teaching methods, thus improving educational outcomes in LMICs.


The metaverse offers a transformative pathway for basic sciences medical education in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) through leveraging 3D human replicas, virtual dissection, laboratories, and simulations.A metaverse-based learning design may easily combine a variety of learning theories, instructional design models, and/or conceptual frameworks, including constructivism, the ADDIE model, universal design, and minimalism.Unlocking the full potential of VR and AR in basic sciences medical education for LMIC universities requires collaborative synergy among educators, policymakers, and technology developers, with a crucial emphasis on equitable access and resource allocation.Despite the immense promise held by metaverse-powered education, it is crucial to address issues surrounding technology accessibility, learning design challenges, and implementation barriers in LMICs as we provide guidance to educators and practitioners worldwide.

Metaverse platforms have gained worldwide popularity in recent years. This increase in popularity has also heightened safety concerns, as virtual sexual assault against children and the youth is on the rise. The issue of sexual abuse in the metaverse is becoming increasingly controversial due to the gaps in the current regulatory framework that result from the uncertain consequences of such virtual crimes. Drawing on an online survey of female users of Zepeto (n = 343), a metaverse social network platform where users interact with others while creating personalized avatars and virtual spaces, this study aims to explore how female users interpret the risk of sexual harassment in Zepeto, examining the triggers of emotional distress and behavioral change that result from such risk assessments by users. It investigates how these interpretations and responses vary depending on their sense of presence and engagement in the virtual environment and identification with their avatars and how all these processes differ between adolescent and adult female users. Overall, this study provides insights into the complex dynamics of virtual victimization. The findings could inform the development of regulatory frameworks that protect users from virtual sexual assault and create a safer environment for all users, especially the youngest generations.

Moving the capital of Indonesia from the Jakarta area to the island of Kalimantan is an inevitable necessity due to economic, political, socio-cultural and environmental factors, which require other areas of the archipelago to be developed. It has been decided that the green city and smart city concepts will be applied in the development of the new capital, using a state-of-the-art approach, including metaverse technology. The methodology employed in this study includes in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, direct field observations, and documentation. The findings of this research consist of an analysis of the readiness of IKN and its surrounding area for the implementation of metaverse technology in IKN. This paper examines whether metaverse technology is needed in the construction of the new capital city. If so, what are the needs for the development of the new capital's metaverse, and what are the advantages (and disadvantages) of using the metaverse. The results are expected to provide a more comprehensive view of the use of metaverse technology in the new capital.
