RESUMEN

Obesity has become a prominent public health concern worldwide and is associated with adverse cognitive function. Exercise, particularly aerobic exercise, is known to benefit for weight loss and cognitive function. However, whether acute aerobic exercise could yield benefits to obese individuals and the precise brain mechanisms of action remain poorly understood. The study aimed to investigate whether acute aerobic exercise could improve inhibitory control among obese individuals and what neuroelectric mechanisms are implicated. A 3 (session: control, low-intensity exercise, moderate-intensity exercise) × 2 (congruency: congruent, incongruent) within-subject design was conducted. 18 obese young male adults underwent three sessions of 30-min interventions in a counterbalanced order seperated by five days: moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (MIE), low-intensity aerobic exercise (LIE) and a control session (a sedentary period of seated rest). The Flanker task and EEG recordings (N2 and P3 amplitude) were investigated following exercise and the control treatment. Results showed that the N2 amplitude following MIE was larger than the control session, whereas a larger N2 and reduced congruent P3 amplitude was observed following MIE than LIE. However, no main effect of the session was found for reaction time and accuracy, but a significant main effect of congruency was observed. These findings suggest acute moderate-intensity aerobic exercise may modulate brain activity through enhanced recruitment of attentional resources for cognitive control and conflict monitoring in adults with obesity.

BACKGROUND: The therapeutic effects of exercise have prompted calls for it to be embedded into standard asthma care, but evidence informing the optimal exercise intensity is lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the effects of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise training on asthma outcomes and inflammation. METHODS: This was a 12-week randomized controlled trial in 46 adults with asthma randomized to either (1) 45-minute moderate-intensity exercise training 3 times/wk, (2) 30-minute vigorous-intensity exercise training 3 times/wk, or (3) the control group. Asthma-related quality of life (AQLQ), asthma control (ACQ), cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, and airway and systemic inflammation were assessed before and after the intervention. RESULTS: Forty-one participants completed the study (89% retention). The moderate-intensity group had a statistically and clinically significant improvement in AQLQ (0.63 [0.33-0.93], P < .001) and ACQ (-0.51 [-0.83 to -0.19], P = .003) relative to control. The vigorous-intensity group had a statistically, but not clinically, significant improvement in AQLQ (0.46 [0.14-0.80], P = .007) and ACQ (-0.36 [-0.69 to -0.02], P = .040) relative to control. After moderate-intensity training, there was a reduction in sputum macrophage (-1341 [-2491 to -191] × 104/mL, P = .024) and lymphocyte (-114 [-220 to -8] × 104/mL, P = .036) counts relative to control. A reduction in android fat mass, but not a change in fitness, was associated with improved AQLQ (rs = -0.341, P = .030) and reduced sputum IL-6 (rs = 0.422, P = .013). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that both moderate-intensity and vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise training are associated with improvements in clinical asthma outcomes and, therefore, both intensities could be recommended as an adjuvant asthma therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Both sleep deprivation and hypoxia have been shown to impair executive function. Conversely, moderate intensity exercise is known to improve executive function. In a multi-experiment study, we tested the hypotheses that moderate intensity exercise would ameliorate any decline in executive function after i) three consecutive nights of partial sleep deprivation (PSD) (Experiment 1) and ii) the isolated and combined effects of a single night of total sleep deprivation (TSD) and acute hypoxia (Experiment 2). METHODS: Using a rigorous randomised controlled crossover design, 12 healthy participants volunteered in each experiment (24 total, 5 females). In both experiments seven executive function tasks (2-choice reaction time, logical relations, manikin, mathematical processing, 1-back, 2-back, 3-back) were completed at rest and during 20 min semi-recumbent, moderate intensity cycling. Tasks were completed in the following conditions: before and after three consecutive nights of PSD and habitual sleep (Experiment 1) and in normoxia and acute hypoxia (FIO2 = 0.12) following one night of habitual sleep and one night of TSD (Experiment 2). RESULTS: Although the effects of three nights of PSD on executive functions were inconsistent, one night of TSD (regardless of hypoxic status) reduced executive functions. Significantly, regardless of sleep or hypoxic status, executive functions are improved during an acute bout of moderate intensity exercise. CONCLUSION: These novel data indicate that moderate intensity exercise improves executive function performance after both PSD and TSD, regardless of hypoxic status. The key determinants and/or mechanism(s) responsible for this improvement still need to be elucidated. Future work should seek to identify these mechanisms and translate these significant findings into occupational and skilled performance settings.

BACKGROUND:Exercise is an effective method for preventing and treating osteoporosis,but it is unclear whether its effect on postmenopausal osteoporosis is related to changes in bone autophagy levels. OBJECTIVE:To observe the effects of exercise via cellular autophagy on the morphology and mechanical properties of bone tissue in ovariectomized rats,and to explore the mechanism of exercise on bone mass in ovariectomized rats from the perspective of autophagy. METHODS:A rat model of postmenopausal osteoporosis was established,and a 24-week moderate-intensity exercise was used for intervention.After the experiment,serum estradiol levels were measured by ELISA,and bone mineral density and bone microstructure of the cortical and trabecular bone were detected by micro-CT.The biomechanical indicators of the tibia were tested by a three-point bending test.Autophagosomes were observed by transmission electron microscopy.The expression of LC3 and ATG7 proteins was analyzed by western blot. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The serum estradiol level in the ovariectomized group was significantly lower than that of the sham-operation group and ovariectomized+exercise group(P<0.01).The body mass of rats in each group increased,and the order was the ovariectomized group>the ovariectomized+exercise group>the sham-operation group>the sham-operation+exercise group.The bone mineral density and bone mass of rats in all groups significantly increased(P<0.01),but the increase in the ovariectomized group was significantly lower than that of the other groups,and the increase in the ovariectomized+exercise group was significantly higher than that of the ovariectomized group.Compared with the sham-operation group,the bone mineral density of the tibial cancellous bone in the sham-operation+exercise group was significantly increased(P<0.01),while the bone mineral density in the ovariectomized and ovariectomized+exercise groups was significantly decreased(P<0.01).Compared with the ovariectomized+exercise group,the ovariectomized group showed significantly lower bone volume fraction,number of trabeculae,and bone mineral density of cancellous bone(P<0.05),extremely significantly lower trabecular thickness(P<0.01),and significantly higher mean trabecular pattern factor,trabecular separation,and structural model index(P<0.01).Compared with the ovariectomized group,the LC3-Ⅱ/LC3-I ratio and the relative expression of ATG7 protein significantly increased in the ovariectomized+exercise group(P<0.05).Compared with the sham-operation and ovariectomized groups,the number of autophagosomes increased in the sham-operation+exercise and ovariectomized+exercise groups,respectively.To conclude,moderate-intensity treadmill exercise can improve the bone microstructure and biomechanical properties of the tibial cancellous bone and increase bone mass in ovariectomized rats by increasing serum estradiol levels and bone autophagy levels.

Purpose: Efficacy of exercise to improve renal health and filtration remains understudied in adults with moderate-stages (stages G3a-b) of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Acute exercise may contribute clinically relevant information for exercise-related augmentation of renal health and filtration in CKD. Urine epidermal growth factor (uEGF) and cystatin C (CyC) are proposed to be more direct biomarkers of renal health and filtration. This study aimed to determine the influence of continuous moderate-intensity exercise (CMIE) and high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) on traditional and novel biomarkers of renal health and filtration in moderate-stages of CKD. Methods: Twenty CKD participants completed 30 minutes of both CMIE and HIIE. Blood and urine samples were obtained pre, 1-hour, and 24-hours post-exercise. Traditional-serum creatinine (sCr) urine creatinine, novel-uEGF, uEGF ratio (uEGFr), and CyC. Estimates of glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)-modification of diet in renal disease (MDRD) and the CKD-Epidemiology (CKD-EPI)-responses were compared pre, 1 hr, and 24 hr post-exercise. Results: Relative to pre-exercise measures, uEGF remained unchanged in both exercise conditions. However, uEGFr was 5.4% greater 24-hours after HIIE (P = .05), while uEGFr remained unchanged with CMIE. sCr decreased 6 to 19% 1-hour post-exercise in both conditions (P = .009). On average renal filtration increased in eGFR-MDRD (7.2 ± 2.0 ml/min/1.73 m2) (P = .007) and eGFR-CKD-EPI (8.6 ± 2.3 ml/min/1.73 m2) 1-hour post-exercise (P = .009). Conclusion: By clinical estimates, renal filtration in CKD was not normalized but transiently improved regardless of exercise condition, with HIIE eliciting transient improvements in renal health.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain is a common cause of disability in the US with increasing financial burden on healthcare. A variety of treatment options exist to combat LBP. Home-based therapy is a low-cost option, but there is a lack of data on how it compares to therapy in clinical settings. It was hypothesized that when using artificial intelligence-guided therapy, supervised in-clinic interventions would have a greater influence on patient-reported outcomes and strength than unsupervised, home interventions. METHODS: This is a non-randomized controlled trial of 51 patients (28 female, 23 male). The investigation compared an 8-week, core-focused exercise intervention in a Clinic (supervised) versus Home (unsupervised) setting. Outcome variables included measures of strength, performance, and patient-reported outcomes related to function. Generalized linear regression (p < 0.05) was used to evaluate outcomes were evaluated with respect to sex, intervention setting, and time. FINDINGS: Male subjects exhibited greater strength (p ≤ 0.02) but not greater patient-reported outcomes (p ≥ 0.30) than females. The Clinic group exhibited slightly greater lateral pull-down strength (p = 0.002), greater eccentric phase range of motion during overhead press (p < 0.01), and shorter concentric phase duration during bench press (p < 0.01) than the Home group. Significance between groups was not observed in any other strength, performance, or patient-reported outcome (p ≥ 0.11). INTERPRETATION: A lack of consistent significance indicated that the hypothesis was not supported. AI-guided, telehealth exercise produced comparable outcomes in both home and clinical settings. Telehealth options may offer a lower-cost alternative to clinic-based exercise therapy for patients with nonspecific lower back pain.

Purposes: Dragon boat is a traditional sport in China, but the brain function characteristics of dragon boat athletes are still unclear. Our purpose is to explore the changing characteristics of brain function of dragon boat athletes at different levels before and after exercise by monitoring the changes of EEG power spectrum and microstate of athletes before and after rowing. Methods: Twenty-four expert dragon boat athletes and 25 novice dragon boat athletes were selected as test subjects to perform the 1,000 m all-out paddling exercise on a dragon boat dynamometer. Their resting EEG data was collected pre- and post-exercise, and the EEG data was pre-processed and then analyzed using power spectrum and microstate based on Matlab software. Results: Post-Exercise, the Heart Rate peak (HR peak), Percentage of Heart Rate max (HR max), Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE), and Exercise duration of the novice group were significantly higher than expert group (p < 0.01). Pre-exercise, the power spectral density values in the δ, α1, α2, and ß1 bands were significantly higher in the expert group compared to the novice group (p < 0.05). Post-exercise, the power spectral density values in the δ, θ, and α1 bands were significantly lower in the expert group compared to the novice group (p < 0.05), the power spectral density values of α2, ß1, and ß2 bands were significantly higher (p < 0.05). The results of microstate analysis showed that the duration and contribution of microstate class D were significantly higher in the pre-exercise expert group compared to the novice group (p < 0.05), the transition probabilities of A → D, C → D, and D → A were significantly higher (p < 0.05). Post-exercise, the duration, and contribution of microstate class C in the expert group decreased significantly compared to the novice group (p < 0.05), the occurrence of microstate classes A and D were significantly higher (p < 0.05), the transition probability of A → B was significantly higher (p < 0.05), and the transition probabilities of C → D and D → C were significantly lower (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The functional brain state of dragon boat athletes was characterized by expert athletes with closer synaptic connections of brain neurons and higher activation of the dorsal attention network in the resting state pre-exercise. There still had higher activation of cortical neurons after paddling exercise. Expert athletes can better adapt to acute full-speed oar training.

The beneficial cardiovascular effects of exercise are well documented, however the mechanisms by which exercise improves vascular function in diabetes are not fully understood. This study investigates whether there are (1) improvements in blood pressure and endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation (EDV) and (2) alterations in the relative contribution of endothelium-derived relaxing factors (EDRF) in modulating mesenteric arterial reactivity in male UC Davis type-2 diabetes mellitus (UCD-T2DM) rats, following an 8-week moderate-intensity exercise (MIE) intervention. EDV to acetylcholine (ACh) was measured before and after exposure to pharmacological inhibitors. Contractile responses to phenylephrine and myogenic tone were determined. The arterial expressions of endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthase (eNOS), cyclooxygenase (COX), and calcium-activated potassium channel (KCa) channels were also measured. T2DM significantly impaired EDV, increased contractile responses and myogenic tone. The impairment of EDV was accompanied by elevated NO and COX importance, whereas the contribution of prostanoid- and NO-independent (endothelium-derived hyperpolarization, EDH) relaxation was not apparent compared to controls. MIE 1) enhanced EDV, while it reduced contractile responses, myogenic tone and systolic blood pressure (SBP), and 2) caused a shift away from a reliance on COX toward a greater reliance on EDH in diabetic arteries. We provide the first evidence of the beneficial effects of MIE via the altered importance of EDRF in mesenteric arterial relaxation in male UCD-T2DM rats.

BACKGROUND: Statin use may exacerbate exercise-induced skeletal muscle injury caused by reduced coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) levels, which are postulated to produce mitochondrial dysfunction. OBJECTIVES: We determined the effect of prolonged moderate-intensity exercise on markers of muscle injury in statin users with and without statin-associated muscle symptoms. We also examined the association between leukocyte CoQ10 levels and muscle markers, muscle performance, and reported muscle symptoms. METHODS: Symptomatic (n = 35; age 62 ± 7 years) and asymptomatic statin users (n = 34; age 66 ± 7 years) and control subjects (n = 31; age 66 ± 5 years) walked 30, 40, or 50 km/d for 4 consecutive days. Muscle injury markers (lactate dehydrogenase, creatine kinase, myoglobin, cardiac troponin I, and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide), muscle performance, and reported muscle symptoms were assessed at baseline and after exercise. Leukocyte CoQ10 was measured at baseline. RESULTS: All muscle injury markers were comparable at baseline (P > 0.05) and increased following exercise (P < 0.001), with no differences in the magnitude of exercise-induced elevations among groups (P > 0.05). Muscle pain scores were higher at baseline in symptomatic statin users (P < 0.001) and increased similarly in all groups following exercise (P < 0.001). Muscle relaxation time increased more in symptomatic statin users than in control subjects following exercise (P = 0.035). CoQ10 levels did not differ among symptomatic (2.3 nmol/U; IQR: 1.8-2.9 nmol/U), asymptomatic statin users (2.1 nmol/U; IQR: 1.8-2.5 nmol/U), and control subjects (2.1 nmol/U; IQR: 1.8-2.3 nmol/U; P = 0.20), and did not relate to muscle injury markers, fatigue resistance, or reported muscle symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Statin use and the presence of statin-associated muscle symptoms does not exacerbate exercise-induced muscle injury after moderate exercise. Dietary protein causes dose-dependent hyperglycemia in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D). This study investigated the effect of consuming 50 g of protein on overnight blood glucose levels (BGLs) following late-afternoon moderate-intensity exercise. Six participants (3M:3F) with T1D, HbA1c 7.5 ± 0.8% (58.0 ± 8.7 mmol/mol) and aged 20.2 ± 3.1 years exercised for 45 min at 1600 h and consumed a protein drink or water alone at 2000 h, on two separate days. A basal insulin euglycemic clamp was employed to measure the mean glucose infusion rates (m-GIR) required to maintain euglycemia on both nights. The m-GIR on the protein and water nights during the hypoglycemia risk period and overnight were 0.27 ± 043 vs. 1.60 ± 0.66 mg/kg/min (p = 0.028, r = 0.63) and 0.51 ± 0.16 vs. 1.34 ± 0.71 mg/kg/min (p = 0.028, r = 0.63), respectively. Despite ceasing intravenous glucose infusion on the protein night, the BGLs peaked at 9.6 ± 1.6 mmol/L, with a hypoglycemia risk period mean of 7.8 ± 1.5 mmol/L compared to 5.9 ± 0.4 mmol/L (p = 0.028) on the water night. The mean plasma glucagon levels were 51.5 ± 14.1 and 27.2 ± 10.1 ng/L (p = 0.028) on the protein and water night, respectively. This suggests that an intake of protein is effective at reducing the post-exercise hypoglycemia risk, potentially via a glucagon-mediated stimulation of glucose production. However, 50 g of protein may be excessive for maintaining euglycemia.

Obesity is a global metabolic disease anchored by a lack of physical activity lipid disturbances. Hitherto, betatrophin is a potential liver-derived hormone that regulates lipid metabolism. A total of 26 selected onset obese individuals (BMI range ± 28-31) were enrolled in this study and given moderate-intensity exercise. Importantly, our data show that acute moderate-intensity interval exercise (MIIE) and acute moderate-intensity continue to exercise (MICE) for 40 min significantly decrease the plasma level of full-length betatrophin respectively (174.18 ± 48.19 ng/mL; 182.31 ± 52.69 ng/mL), compared to the placebo (283.97 ± 32.23 ng/mL) post 10 min and 6 h exercise treatment (p ≤ 0.05). The plasma level of betatrophin was significantly and negatively correlated with BMI (r = - 0.412, p = 0.037), fasting blood glucose (r = - 0.390, p = 0.049), and positively correlated with VO2max (r = 0.456, p = 0.019). In addition, the linear and ordinal logistic regression analysis shows that betatrophin, is a potential predictor for BMI [estimate value = 0.995, p = 0.037 and OR (95 % CI) = 0.992 (0.0984-1.00), p = 0,048]. In summary, our data demonstrate that the circulating levels of betatrophin were decreased after acute moderate-intensity exercise training.

Purpose: Heart rate variability (HRV) has gained acceptance as a key marker of cardiovascular health. We compared HRV responses after continuous moderate-intensity exercise (CMIE) and high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) matched for intensity and duration in individuals with midspectrum chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: Twenty men and women (age 62.0 ± 10 yrs.) diagnosed with CKD stages G3a and G3b participated in a 2 (condition) x 4 (time point) repeated cross-over measures design study. HRV time-domain indices were based on the standard deviation of all NN intervals (SDNN) and the square root of the mean of the sum of the squares of differences between adjacent NN intervals (RMSSD) and frequency domain. High-frequency (HF), low-frequency (LF), total power (TP) were examined. CMIE consisted of treadmill walking for 30 minutes at a 2% incline and speed corresponding to 60%-65% of reserve volume of oxygen (VO2R). HIIE included five intervals of 3 minutes at 90% of VO2R and 2 minutes at 20% VO2R intervals. Conditions were designed to be of the same average intensity (60% to 65% of VO2R) and caloric expenditure (~144 kcal). Results: Immediately following exercise SDNN, RMSSD, HF, LF, and TP were significantly lower compared to before exercise (p <.05). HRV responses were not different between conditions and conditions X time (p >.05). Conclusions: Thirty minutes of either CMIE or HIIE decreased HRV indices, pointing to an autonomic imbalance favoring vagal mediation. HRV's responses regarding HIIE were no different from CMIE, therefore, from an autonomic function point of view this similarity may be useful for CKD exercise prescription and programming.

Exercise has long been known for its active role in improving physical fitness and sustaining health. Regular moderate-intensity exercise improves all aspects of human health and is widely accepted as a preventative and therapeutic strategy for various diseases. It is well-documented that exercise maintains and restores homeostasis at the organismal, tissue, cellular, and molecular levels to stimulate positive physiological adaptations that consequently protect against various pathological conditions. Here we mainly summarize how moderate-intensity exercise affects the major hallmarks of health, including the integrity of barriers, containment of local perturbations, recycling and turnover, integration of circuitries, rhythmic oscillations, homeostatic resilience, hormetic regulation, as well as repair and regeneration. Furthermore, we summarize the current understanding of the mechanisms responsible for beneficial adaptations in response to exercise. This review aimed at providing a comprehensive summary of the vital biological mechanisms through which moderate-intensity exercise maintains health and opens a window for its application in other health interventions. We hope that continuing investigation in this field will further increase our understanding of the processes involved in the positive role of moderate-intensity exercise and thus get us closer to the identification of new therapeutics that improve quality of life.

OBJECTIVES: Overweight status decreases the growth hormone (GH) secretion, thus, increasing the risk factors for medical complications. However, proper exercise is reported to enhance GH and affect the energy balance. Therefore, exercise is proclaimed to be an accurate and engaging therapy to increase GH in preventing overweight. This study aims to investigate the physiological response of exercise in mediating the increase of GH secretion in female adolescents. METHODS: 22 overweight women aged 19-20 years old, with maximal oxygen consumption of 27-35 mL/kg/min, were selected as sample size. They were divided into three groups, namely (CONT, n=7) Control, (MIEE, n=7) Moderate-intensity interval endurance exercise, and (MCEE, n=8) Moderate-intensity continuous endurance exercise. The exercise was carried out by running for 30-35 min using treadmills with an intensity of 60-70% HRmax. The blood sampling for GH examination was carried out four times before exercise, 10 min, 6 h, and 24 h after exercise. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure the GH and IGF-1 levels. The data analysis was carried out using a one-way ANOVA test, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: The results of the one-Way ANOVA test suggested a significantly different average GH and IGF-1 before and after the exercise between the three groups (CON, MIEE, and MCEE) (p≤0.05). CONCLUSIONS: MCEE increases the GH and IGF-1 levels more considerably than MIEE. Therefore, exercise is a mediator to increase GH and IGF-1 secretion in overweight individuals. Exercise could be a viable therapy for overweight people.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of moderate intensity resistance training with blood flow restriction on muscle strength and forearm girth. METHODS: Total of 39 students enrolled in this study were divided into three groups that is group A (control group), group B and group C. Group A performed exercise training without restrictive pressure, group B and C performed exercise training with 50 and 75 mmHg respectively. Both the outcome measures were evaluated on day 1 and day 12th with the help of digital dynamometer and measuring tape. RESULTS: Repeated measure ANOVA with Post hoc analysis was done using SPSS software version 20. The result of the study showed significant (p≤0.05) within subject improvement in muscle strength and muscle girth in all the three groups. However, significant improvement in muscle strength was found in between group analysis (p≤0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study can be concluded as the partial blood flow restriction (50 mmHg) with moderate intensity resistance training resulted in greater handgrip strength than the other two groups. No difference was found in forearm girth among the three groups, however within the group difference was found.

Background: Lifestyle changes in Diabetes Mellitus (DM) positively affect blood glucose and all risk factors. This study aims to determine the effect of swimming and running exercises on oxidant-antioxidant and lipid profiles in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 1 diabetic and non-diabetic rats. Methods: We included forty-eight adult male Wistar albino rats in this study, and we randomly classified them into six groups (eight per group). The groups were organized as Control Sedentary, Control Exercise-swimming, Control Exercise-running (CE-r), Diabetes Sedentary (DS), Diabetes Exercise-swimming (DE-s), and Diabetes Exercise running (DE-r). Half of these rats were subjected to experimental diabetes via STZ. We evaluated total oxidant capacity (TOC), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and as lipid parameters: high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides. The rats were sacrificed at the end of the four weeks. Results: We found a significant difference between DE-s and DE-r groups in terms of TOC (p =0.043) and SOD (p =0.030). The highest TAC was found in the CE-r group, and the highest TOC was found in the DS group. Exercise significantly reduced LDL levels. There was no significant difference between the DE-s and DE-r groups (p =0.084) for lipid profiles (HDL). Conclusion: Based on the lower TOC (oxidant) and higher SOD (antioxidant) levels in the diabetic running group, these results suggest that running may be more beneficial than swimming for diabetics. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to determine the effect of moderate-intensity exercise (MIE) and high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) on serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels and working memory (WM) in young adult females. Methodology: This study was conducted in the Physiology Department, Khyber Girls Medical College Peshawar. Young adult females (n = 22), with a mean age of 20±2 years were recruited for two experimental sessions of MIE and HIIE, respectively. Baseline and post exercise blood samples were taken for determination of serum BDNF level and backward digit span test (BDST) for assessment of working memory in both sessions. Results: Serum BDNF levels pre and post MIE were 707±448 pg/ml and 829±476 pg/ml (p = 0.006) respectively while pre and post HIIE were 785±329 pg /ml and 1116±379 pg/ml (p < 0.001) respectively. BDST scores were significantly high at post intervention for both MIE (p = 0.05) and HIIE (p 0.001). Conclusions: Altogether our findings showed that both MIE and HIIE significantly increased serum BDNF levels and working memory in young adult females.

Moderate-intensity exercise performed during wound healing has been reported to decrease inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and accelerate wound healing. However, its effect on macrophage phenotype and the mechanism by which exercise accelerates wound healing remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of exercise on macrophage phenotype during wound healing and to clarify the relationship between angiogenesis and wound healing. 12-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were divided into sedentary (n = 6) and exercise groups (n = 6). The exercise group performed moderate-intensity treadmill running exercise (9.0 m/min, 60 min) for 10 days. Double immunofluorescence analysis was performed using F4/80+ inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)+ for M1 macrophages, F4/80+ transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ß)1+ for M2 macrophages, and CD31+ alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA)+ for angiogenesis. The exercise group showed significantly accelerated wound healing compared with the sedentary group. From early wound healing onward, exercise significantly inhibited M1 macrophage infiltration and increased M2 macrophage count. Exercise also significantly increased angiogenesis. Furthermore, the M2 macrophage phenotype was significantly correlated with angiogenesis in the exercise group, indicating that M2 macrophages and angiogenesis are related to accelerated wound healing. These findings suggest that moderate-intensity exercise increases TGF-ß1 derived from M2 macrophages, which may be associated with enhanced angiogenesis and wound healing in young mice.

Background: Therapeutic interventions for diabetes are one of the main components of treatment and having proper physical activity in these patients is important from different physical, psychological, and social aspects. The benefits of exercise in these people include improved cardiovascular health and increased self-confidence, contributing to maintaining proper weight, controlling blood pressure, lowering blood lipids, and lowering insulin levels. The objective of this study was to assess the baseline levels of growth hormones and cortisol and the response of these 2 hormones to 1 session of moderate-intensity exercise in type 2 diabetic patients and to compare them with healthy individuals. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental and applied study, with a pretest and posttest design and with 1 control group. Participants included 12 healthy people without diabetes and 12 patients with type 2 diabetes aged over 30 years who were referred to the Diabetes Clinic of Tohid hospital, Kurdistan, Iran. After describing the objectives and hypothesis of the study and the implementation method, informed consent was obtained from all participants. SPSS Version 22 software was used for data analysis and coding. The Shapiro-Wilk normality test was used to assess data distribution. A paired t test, an independent t test, the Wilcoxon test, and the Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare outcomes between the 2 groups before and after the intervention. Results: A total of 24 individuals were included: 5 men and 7 women were included in the diabetic group and 7 men and 5 women were included in the healthy group. The mean duration of diabetes in the diabetic group was 7.82 years. The results showed that there was no reason for rejecting a relationship between 1 session of moderate-intensity exercise and increased growth hormone secretion in healthy individuals (p=0.010), but the relationship between this factor and increased growth hormone secretion in the diabetic participants could be strongly rejected (p=0.900). Also, 1 session of the moderate-intensity exercise was not significantly correlated with cortisol secretion in healthy and diabetic participants (p>0.05). Conclusion: This study revealed that baseline growth hormone levels in healthy participants were higher than those of diabetic participants and 1 session of moderate-intensity exercise significantly increased the growth hormone secretion but did not significantly increase the cortisol secretion.
