RESUMEN

The precise diagnosis of mental disorders constitutes a formidable problem. Mental disorders are currently diagnosed based on clinical symptoms, which are often subjective. Various drug classes, traditionally referred to as "antidepressants," "antipsychotics" and "mood stabilizers" are then used empirically to treat affected patients. The previous decade has witnessed an increasing extension of the use of drug classes beyond their traditional indications (e.g., "antidepressants" in the treatment of anxiety disorders). Therefore, we would like to initiate a discussion in the pharmacological and psychiatric research communities on an alternative classification of mental disorders: Instead of using the traditional categorical classification of mental disorders physicians should rather diagnose symptoms (e.g., anhedonia) without bias to a traditional categorization (e.g., depression). The appropriate most effective drugs are then selected based on these symptoms. Depending on the responsiveness of the patient towards a given drug X, the disease should be classified, e.g., as drug X-responsive disease. This approach will also help us elucidate the still poorly understood molecular mechanisms underlying mental disorders, i.e., drugs can also be viewed and used as molecular diagnostic tools. In several fields of medicine, drugs are already used as molecular diagnostic tools. Thus, there is already precedence for the concept proposed here for mental disorders.

Resident physicians on long-term night shifts often face sleep deprivation, affecting the immune response, notably neutrophils, vital to innate defense mechanisms. Sleep-deprived residents exhibit altered neutrophil counts and reduced phagocytosis and NADPH oxidase activity, critical to combating infections. Our study focused on neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), a defense process against pathogens not previously linked to sleep loss. Results revealed that sleep-deprived residents exhibited a 19.8 % reduction in NET formation compared to hospital workers with regular sleep patterns (P < 0.01). Additionally, key NETs proteins, Neutrophil Elastase and Myeloperoxidase, were less active in sleep-deprived individuals (1.53mU; P < 0.01 and 0.95U; P < 0.001 decrease, accordingly). Interestingly, the ability to form NETs resumed to normal levels three months post-residency among pediatric residents. The causal relationship between reduced NETs due to sleep deprivation and the increased susceptibility to infections, as well as its implications for infection severity, is a critical area for further investigation.

Gaidropsarus mauritanicus sp. nov. is described from one specimen collected using a grab sample from the Tanoûdêrt Canyon (ca. 20° N) off Mauritania at a depth of 595 m. The new species was further observed during eight remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives along the Mauritanian slope southwards down to the Tiguent Coral Mound Complex (~17° N) in a bathymetric range between 613 and 416 m. It can be distinguished from congeners by a combination of characteristics, including large eyes (38.1% head length [HL]), large head (25.8% standard length [SL]), elongated pelvic fins (35.7% SL), low number of vertebrae (44), and coloration (pinkish with a dorsal darker brownish hue and bright blotches along the dorsal-fin base). A species-delimitation analysis performed with available cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) sequences affiliated to the genus Gaidropsarus additionally supported the validity of the new species. Video analyses showed a deep-water coral-associated and protection-seeking behavior, which may explain why the species has remained undescribed until now. Additional ROV footage from separate deep-water coral sites in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea further highlights the ecological behavior and hidden diversity of bathyal three-bearded rocklings. Here, we additionally discuss the biogeographical distribution of all genetically verified Gaidropsarus spp. in combination with genetic data and morphological characters. G. mauritanicus sp. nov. is closely related to a species from Tasmania (43° S), a geographical point furthest among the studied samples, which may hint to an important influence of (paleo-) oceanography on the distributions of Gaidropsarus species.

OBJECTIVE: Given its key homeostatic role affecting mitochondria, ionotropic and metabotropic receptors, and voltage-gated ion channels, sigma-1 receptor (Sig1R) represents an interesting target for epilepsy management. Antiseizure effects of the positive allosteric modulator E1R have already been reported in acute seizure models. Although modulation of serotonergic neurotransmission is considered the main mechanism of action of fenfluramine, its interaction with Sig1R may be of additional relevance. METHODS: To further explore the potential of Sig1R as a target, we assessed the efficacy and tolerability of E1R and fenfluramine in two chronic mouse models, including an amygdala kindling paradigm and the intrahippocampal kainate model. The relative contribution of the interaction with Sig1R was analyzed using combination experiments with the Sig1R antagonist NE-100. RESULTS: Whereas E1R exerted pronounced dose-dependent antiseizure effects at well-tolerated doses in fully kindled mice, only limited effects were observed in response to fenfluramine, without a clear dose dependency. In the intrahippocampal kainate model, E1R failed to influence electrographic seizure activity. In contrast, fenfluramine significantly reduced the frequency of electrographic seizure events and their cumulative duration. Pretreatment with NE-100 reduced the effects of E1R and fenfluramine in the kindling model. Surprisingly, pre-exposure to NE-100 in the intrahippocampal kainate model rather enhanced and prolonged fenfluramine's antiseizure effects. SIGNIFICANCE: In conclusion, the kindling data further support Sig1R as an interesting target for novel antiseizure medications. However, it is necessary to further explore the preclinical profile of E1R in chronic epilepsy models with spontaneous seizures. Despite the rather limited effects in the kindling paradigm, the findings from the intrahippocampal kainate model suggest that it is of interest to further assess a possible broad-spectrum potential of fenfluramine.

Due of the potential of species to determine ecosystem properties, it is important to understand how species abundance influences community assembly. Using vegetation surveys on 35 dry grasslands in north-east Slovenia, we defined dominant (8) and subordinate (61) plant species. They were compared on 14 traits to test for differences in community-weighted mean (CWM) and functional diversity (FD). We found that dominants and subordinates differed strongly in their functional traits. Dominants showed higher leaf dry matter content and a more pronounced stress tolerance strategy and were all clonal with a large proportion of species with rhizomes and a rich bud bank, while other species showed a higher specific leaf area, a longer flowering period and more ruderals. For most traits, FD was higher in subordinates. Our results suggest that dominants drive community structure by limited susceptibility to non-competitive processes. Dominants may have positive effects on subordinates by mitigating environmental stressors. Subordinates are able to assemble together by being dissimilar and use different fine-scale niches that are engineered and homogenised by dominants. Our results show that there are fundamental differences in the relative importance of ecological processes between dominant and subordinate plants in species-rich grasslands, which is also important for their conservational management.

Preserving genetic diversity and adaptive potential while avoiding inbreeding depression is crucial for the long-term conservation of natural populations. Despite demographic increases, traces of past bottleneck events at the genomic level should be carefully considered for population management. From this perspective, the peninsular Italian wolf is a paradigmatic case. After being on the brink of extinction in the late 1960s, peninsular Italian wolves rebounded and recolonized most of the peninsula aided by conservation measures, including habitat and legal protection. Notwithstanding their demographic recovery, a comprehensive understanding of the genomic consequences of the historical bottleneck in Italian wolves is still lacking. To fill this gap, we sequenced whole genomes of thirteen individuals sampled in the core historical range of the species in Central Italy to conduct population genomic analyses, including a comparison with wolves from two highly-inbred wolf populations (i.e., Scandinavia and Isle Royale). We found that peninsular Italian wolves, despite their recent recovery, still exhibit relatively low genetic diversity, a small effective population size, signatures of inbreeding, and a non-negligible genetic load. Our findings indicate that the peninsular Italian wolf population is still susceptible to bottleneck legacies, which could lead to local inbreeding depression in case of population reduction or fragmentations. This study emphasizes the importance of considering key genetic parameters to design appropriate long-term conservation management plans.

Depression and anxiety are prominent symptoms of withdrawal syndrome, often caused by the abuse of addictive drugs like morphine. N-palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), a biologically active lipid, is utilized as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic medication. Recent studies have highlighted PEA's role in mitigating cognitive decline and easing depression resulting from chronic pain. However, it remains unknown whether PEA can influence negative emotions triggered by morphine withdrawal. This study seeks to explore the impact of PEA on such emotions and investigate the underlying mechanisms. Mice subjected to morphine treatment underwent a 10-day withdrawal period, followed by assessments of the effect of PEA on anxiety- and depression-like behaviors using various tests. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was conducted to measure levels of monoamine neurotransmitters in specific brain regions. The findings indicate that PEA mitigated anxiety and depression symptoms and reduced 5-hydroxytryptamine, noradrenaline, and dopamine levels in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. In summary, PEA demonstrates a significant positive effect on negative emotions associated with morphine withdrawal, accompanied with the reduction in levels of monoamine neurotransmitters in key brain regions. These insights could be valuable for managing negative emotions arising from morphine withdrawal.

This study explores microplastic and cellulosic microparticle occurrences in the NE Atlantic, focusing on the Porcupine Bank Canyon and Porcupine Seabight. Water samples from depths ranging between 605 and 2126 m and Lophelia pertusa coral samples from 950 m depth were analysed. Microparticles were detected in deep-water habitats, with concentrations varying from 2.33 to 9.67 particles L-1 in the Porcupine Bank Canyon, notably lower at greater depths. This challenges the assumption of deeper habitats solely acting as microplastic sinks. We also found evidence of microparticle adsorption and ingestion by L. pertusa. The presence of microparticles in cold-water corals underscores their vulnerability to pollutants. Furthermore, the dominance of rayon microparticles in both water and coral samples raises questions about marine pollution sources, potentially linked to terrestrial origins. This research emphasises the critical need for comprehensive exploration and conservation efforts in deep-sea environments, especially to protect vital ecosystems like L. pertusa reefs.

The risks from radioactive wastewater release from nuclear facilities into the ocean are a global concern. Radioactive contaminants, such as tritium (3H), in both forms of tissue free water tritium (TFWT) and non-exchangeable organically bound tritium (NE-OBT), can be incorporated into marine biota and cause radiation doses to biota and future consumers. However, no studies have been conducted to measure both forms of 3H in marine fish as well as evaluate the residence time in the vicinity of a nuclear fuel reprocessing facility. Here, fish from a brackish lake and from the Pacific Ocean coastline of Japan, which are near such a facility, were collected between 2006 and 2021. The reprocessing facility was operational between 2006 and 2009, during which time about 300 times more tritiated water was discharged per year into the ocean compared to the period when the facility was not operational. During operation the annual release was 30 times higher than the treated water released annually from Fukushima Daiichi. As expected, TFWT and NE-OBT concentrations increased in marine fish during operations and had peak values of 3.59 ± 0.03 and 0.56 ± 0.03 Bq/L, respectively. Total dose rates to the fish were 36,000 times lower than the 10 µGy h-1 benchmark. Concentrations gradually decreased to pre-operational levels as the facility was turned off with NE-OBT taking twice as long. Fish sampled from the brackish lake tended to have more incorporated TFWT and NE-OBT concentrations than ocean fish. This indicates that ocean tides might have contributed to the accumulation of discharged tritiated water in the lake via a narrow water channel, which highlights the importance of examining all marine ecosystems in future operations. In both marine environments, the estimated committed effective dose using the highest observed data through ingestion was well below public limits (91,000 times lower).

This study aimed to investigate the effects of the n-hexane fraction of the ethanolic seed extract of PG (NFESEPG) on hypertension induced by Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) in rats. Specifically, the study examined the impact of NFESEPG on blood pressure, oxidative stress markers, NO concentration, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and arginase activities, and cardiac biomarkers in hypertensive rats. The study involved collecting, identifying, and processing the PG plant to obtain the ethanolic seed extract. The extract was then partitioned with solvents to isolate the n-hexane fraction. Hypertension was induced in rats by oral administration of L-NAME for 10 days, while concurrent treatment with NFESEPG at two doses (200 and 400 mg/kg/day) was administered orally. Blood pressure was measured using a noninvasive tail-cuff method, and various biochemical parameters were assessed. Treatment with both doses of NFESEPG significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure in L-NAME-induced hypertensive rats. Additionally, NFESEPG administration increased NO concentration and decreased ACE and arginase activities, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and cardiac biomarkers in hypertensive rats. The findings indicate that NFESEPG effectively lowered blood pressure in hypertensive rats induced by L-NAME, potentially through mechanisms involving the modulation of oxidative stress, NO bioavailability, and cardiac biomarkers. These results suggest the therapeutic potential of NFESEPG in managing hypertension and related cardiovascular complications.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a national lockdown and the interruption of all cancer preventive services, including cervical cancer screening. We aimed to assess the COVID-19 pandemic impact on opportunistic screening participation, abnormal cytology (ASCUS+) prevalence and screening interval in 2020 and 2021 within the Public Health System of Catalonia, Spain. Methods: Individual data on cytology and HPV testing of women aged 25-65 from 2014 to 2021 were retrieved from the Information System for Primary Care Services (SISAP). Time-series regression models were used to estimate expected screening participation and abnormal cytology prevalence in 2020 and 2021. The impact was determined by comparing observed and expected values (ratios). Additionally, changes in screening interval trends between 2014 and 2021 were assessed by fitting a Piecewise linear regression model. Results: Cervical cancer screening participation decreased by 38.8% and 2.2% in 2020 and 2021, respectively, with the most significant impact on participation (-96.1%) occurring in April 2020. Among older women, participation was lower, and it took longer to recover. Abnormal cytology prevalence was 1.4 times higher than expected in 2020 and 2021, with variations by age (range=1.1-1.5). From June 2020 onwards, the screening interval trend significantly changed from an increase of 0.59 to 3.57 months per year, resulting in a median time of 48 months by December 2021. Conclusions: During the pandemic, fewer women have participated in cervical cancer screening, abnormal cytology prevalence has increased, and the screening interval is more prolonged than before. The potential cervical cancer lifetime risk implications highlight the need for organized HPV-based screening.

The present study aimed to investigate the impacts of dietary standardized ileal digestible lysine to net energy (SID Lys:NE) ratio on lipid metabolism in pigs fed high-wheat diets. Thirty-six crossbred growing barrows (65.20 ± 0.38 kg) were blocked into two treatment groups, fed high-wheat diets with either a high SID Lys:NE ratio (HR) or a low SID Lys:NE ratio (LR). Each treatment group consisted of three replicates, with six pigs per pen in each replicate. The diminishing dietary SID Lys:NE ratio exhibited no adverse impacts on the carcass trait (p > 0.05) but increased the marbling score of the longissimus dorsi muscle (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, LR diets tended to increase the serum triglyceride concentration (p < 0.1). LR diets upregulated fatty acid transport protein 4 and acetyl-coA carboxylase α expression levels and downregulated the expression level of adipose triglyceride lipase (p < 0.05). LR diets improved energy metabolism via decreasing the expression levels of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) α1, sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) (p < 0.05). Additionally, LR diets stimulated hepatic bile acid synthesis via upregulating the expression levels of cytochrome P450 family 7 subfamily A member 1 and cytochrome P450 family 27 subfamily A member 1, and downregulating farnesol X receptor (FXR) and small heterodimer partner (SHP) expression levels (p < 0.05). A lowered SID Lys:NE ratio affected the colonic microbial composition, characterized by increased relative abundances of YRC22, Parabacteroides, Sphaerochaeta, and Bacteroides, alongside a decreased in the proportion of Roseburia, f_Lachnospiraceae_g_Clostridium, Enterococcus, Shuttleworthia, Exiguobacterium, Corynebacterium, Subdoligranulum, Sulfurospirillum, and Marinobacter (p < 0.05). The alterations in microbial composition were accompanied by a decrease in colonic butyrate concentration (p < 0.1). The metabolomic analysis revealed that LR diets affected primary bile acid synthesis and AMPK signaling pathway (p < 0.05). And the mantel analysis indicated that Parabacteroides, Sphaerochaeta, f_Lachnospiraceae_g_Clostridium, Shuttleworthia, and Marinobacter contributed to the alterations in body metabolism. A reduced dietary SID Lys:NE ratio improves energy metabolism, stimulates lipogenesis, and inhibits lipolysis in finishing pigs by regulating the AMPKα/SIRT1/PGC-1α pathway and the FXR/SHP pathway. Parabacteroides and Sphaerochaeta benefited bile acids synthesis, whereas f_Lachnospiraceae_g_Clostridium, Shuttleworthia, and Marinobacter may contribute to the activation of the AMPK signaling pathway. Overall, body metabolism and colonic microbiota collectively controlled the lipid metabolism in finishing pigs.

OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer is one of the most widespread tumors among women worldwide, which is difficult to treat due to the presence of chemoresistance and the risk of tumor recurrence and metastasis. There is a pressing necessity to develop efficient treatments to improve response for treatment and increase prolong survival of breast cancer patients. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has attracted interest for its features as a noninvasive and relatively selective cancer treatment. This method relies on light-activated photosensitizers that, upon absorbing light, generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) with powerful cell-killing outcomes. Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), a transcription factor, plays a key role in cancer development by regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival. Inhibiting NF-κB can sensitize tumor cells to chemotherapeutic agents. Dimethyl fumarate (DMF), an NF-κB inhibitor approved by the FDA for multiple sclerosis treatment, has further shown promise in suppressing breast cancer cell growth in vitro. We hypothesized that combining PDT with Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) could further enhance therapeutic efficacy for both treatment modalities. METHODS: In the current study, we explored the PDT effect of 1 and 2 mM aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) and low-power He-Ne laser irradiation combined with different concentrations of DMF (2.5, 1.25, or 0.652 µg/ml) against hormone nonresponsive AMJ13 breast cancer cell line that is derived from Iraqi patient. RESULTS: Our results demonstrated that co-administration with all tested DMF concentrations significantly enhanced the cytotoxicity of PDT antitumor effect. The combination index analysis showed presence of synergism in combining PDT with DMF. CONCLUSION: This finding suggests that the combination of PDT with DMF could be a promising novel strategy against triple negative breast cancer that could be applied clinically due to the fact that both of these treatments are already clinically approved therapies.

Preformulation investigations into the development of drug formulations, encompassing considerations related to the structure of the drug, excipients, composition, and physical attributes are crucial. This phase is pivotal in ensuring the ultimate success of nanoemulsion development. The objective of this study was to evaluate and define the properties of bedaquiline (BDQ) and the necessary excipients for the formulation of self-emulsifying BDQ-loaded nanoemulsions. To determine the saturation solubility of BDQ in various oils, an in-house validated HPLC method was used. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was utilised to identify and evaluate the compatibility between BDQ and the selected excipients. The water titration method was used to construct phase diagrams to identify the type of structure that resulted following emulsification and to characterise the behaviour of mixtures along dilution paths. The solubility studies revealed that BDQ exhibited the highest solubility in olive oil, with a solubility of 3.45 ± 0.041 mg/ml. The design space led to the formation of emulsions categorised as Winsor products. Importantly, the FTIR data indicated the absence of any potential interactions between BDQ and the chosen excipients. The preformulation studies were successful and facilitated the selection of compatible and suitable excipients for the formulation of BDQ-loaded nanoemulsions.

Dermatophytosis is a critical sort of skin infection caused by dermatophytes. The long-term treatment of such skin infections may be improved through the application of nanotechnology. This study aimed to prepare griseofulvin zinc Nanohybrid emulsion (GF-Zn-NHE) to improve griseofulvin activity against dermatophytes and some opportunistic pathogenic yeasts and bacteria. The GF-Zn-NHE is prepared by ultra-homogenization ultra-sonication strategies and validated by UV-visible spectroscopy analysis that confirms presences of griseofulvin and Zn-NPs peaks at 265 and 360 nm, respectively. The GF-Zn-NHE has mean distribution size 50 nm and zeta potential in the range from -40 to -36 mV with no significant changes in size distribution and particle size within 120 day ageing. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectrum confirmed the presence of griseofulvin and Zn-NPs stretching vibration peaks. Gamma ray has a negative influence on GF-Zn-NE production and stability. GF-Zn-NHE drug release 95% up to 24 h and 98% up to 72 h of GF was observed and Zinc 90% up to 24 h and 95% up to 72 h, respectively. High antimicrobial activity was observed with GF-Zn-NHE against dermatophytic pathogens in compare with GF, GF-NE, zinc nitrate and ketoconazole with inhibition zone ranged from 14 to 36 mm. The results have shown that the MIC value for Cryptococcus neoformans, Prophyromonas gingivalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa is 0.125 mg ml -1 and for Trichophyton rubrum, L. bulgaricus and Escherichia coli value is 0.25 mg ml -1 and for Candida albicans, Malassezia furfur and Enterococcus faecalis is 0.5 mg ml -1 and finally 1 mg ml -1 for Streptococcus mutans. TEM of treated Cryptococcus neoformans cells with GF-Zn-NHE displayed essentially modified morphology, degradation, damage of organelles, vacuoles and other structures.

New binuclear copper(II) [Cu(II)] tetraligand complexes (six examples) with sulfanylpyrazole ligands were synthesized. Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies have shown that in solution the complexes are transformed to the mononuclear one. Fungicidal properties against Candida albicans were found for the Cu complexes with benzyl and phenyl substituents. An in vitro evaluation of the cytotoxic properties of Cu chelates against HEK293, Jurkat, MCF-7, and THP-1 cells identified the Cu complex with the cyclohexylsulfanyl substituent in the pyrazole core as the lead compound, whereas the Cu complex without a sulfur atom in the pyrazole ligand had virtually no cytotoxic or fungicidal activity. The lead Cu(II) complex was more active than cisplatin. Effect of the S-containing Cu complex on apoptosis and cell cycle distribution has been investigated as well.

The realization of perovskite oxide nanostructures with controlled shape and dimensions remains a challenge. Here, we investigate the use of helium and neon focused ion beam (FIB) milling in an ion microscope to fabricate BaTiO3nanopillars of sub-500 nm in diameter starting from BaTiO3(001) single crystals. Irradiation of BaTiO3with He ions induces the formation of nanobubbles inside the material, eventually leading to surface swelling and blistering. Ne-FIB is shown to be suitable for milling without inducing surface swelling. The resulting structures are defect-free single crystal nanopillars, which are enveloped, on the top and lateral sidewalls, by a point defect-rich crystalline region and an outer Ne-rich amorphous layer. The amorphous layer can be selectively etched by dipping in diluted HF. The geometry and beam-induced damage of the milled nanopillars depend strongly on the patterning parameters and can be well controlled. Ne ion milling is shown to be an effective method to rapidly prototype BaTiO3crystalline nanostructures.

As the treatment landscape for prostate cancer gradually evolves, the frequency of treatment-induced neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC) and double-negative prostate cancer (DNPC) that is deficient for androgen receptor (AR) and neuroendocrine (NE) markers has increased. These prostate cancer subtypes are typically refractory to AR-directed therapies and exhibit poor clinical outcomes. Only a small range of NEPC/DNPC models exist, limiting our molecular understanding of this disease and hindering our ability to perform preclinical trials exploring novel therapies to treat NEPC/DNPC that are urgently needed in the clinic. Here, we report the development of the CU-PC01 PDX model that represents AR-negative mCRPC with PTEN/RB/PSMA loss and CTNN1B/TP53/BRCA2 genetic variants. The CU-PC01 model lacks classic NE markers, with only focal and/or weak expression of chromogranin A, INSM1 and CD56. Collectively, these findings are most consistent with a DNPC phenotype. Ex vivo and in vivo preclinical studies revealed that CU-PC01 PDX tumours are resistant to mCRPC standard-of-care treatments enzalutamide and docetaxel, mirroring the donor patient's treatment response. Furthermore, short-term CU-PC01 tumour explant cultures indicate this model is initially sensitive to PARP inhibition with olaparib. Thus, the CU-PC01 PDX model provides a valuable opportunity to study AR-negative mCRPC biology and to discover new treatment avenues for this hard-to-treat disease.

Sputtering of silicon in a He magnetron discharge (MS) has been reported as a bottom-up procedure to obtain He-charged silicon films (i.e., He nanobubbles encapsulated in a silicon matrix). The incorporation of heavier noble gases is demonstrated in this work with a synergistic effect, producing increased Ne and Ar incorporations when using He-Ne and He-Ar gas mixtures in the MS process. Microstructural and chemical characterizations are reported using ion beam analysis (IBA) and scanning and transmission electron microscopies (SEM and TEM). In addition to gas incorporation, He promotes the formation of larger nanobubbles. In the case of Ne, high-resolution X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopies (XPS and XAS) are reported, with remarkable dependence of the Ne 1s photoemission and the Ne K-edge absorption on the nanobubble's size and composition. The gas (He, Ne and Ar)-charged thin films are proposed as "solid" targets for the characterization of spectroscopic properties of noble gases in a confined state without the need for cryogenics or high-pressure anvils devices. Also, their use as targets for nuclear reaction studies is foreseen.
