RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Virtual simulation (VS) can be an effective learning strategy in the context of nursing education on cardiovascular disease; however, its use in teaching cardiology in nursing is less studied. The objective of this scoping review is to map the use of VS for teaching cardiology in nursing. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review will be conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute methods, and the results will be reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews checklist. Eight databases will be searched: MEDLINE (NCBI/PubMed), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Web of Science, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences, Spanish Bibliographic Index of Health Sciences, Database of Nursing, EMBASE and Google Scholar from inception to 31 July 2024. This study will include any existing peer-reviewed literature and grey literature. There will be no time or language restrictions. Two reviewers will screen and select the articles independently, and when there are differences, they will be resolved with a third opinion. When appropriate, broad themes and categories derived from the review questions will be accompanied by other illustrative formats (eg, tables or graphs, word clouds and infographics). ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This research project does not require ethical committee approval. The study is part of a cooperative research project between researchers from the Federal University of Piauí, Northeast of Brazil, and Queen's University, Ontario, Canada, to develop and seek evidence of content validity of a VS game about valvular heart disease. The protocol and review will be published in peer-reviewed journals. REGISTRATION DETAILS: Open Science Framework (https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/S3UMH).

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hospital Survey on Patient Safety version 2.0 (HSOSPS 2.0) from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality enables hospitals to gather the information needed to evaluate the patient safety culture within their institution. However, version 2.0 has not been widely implemented in Chile. This study aims to customize and validate the original HSOSPS 2.0 for a Chilean hospital. METHODS: Translation and cross-cultural adaptation, content validity through a group of experts, and a pilot test with cognitive pretest were applied to 259 participants from the nursing team in 11 hospital services to study construct validity and reliability. RESULTS: In the current study, a version of the questionnaire adapted to the Chilean cultural context showed excellent content validity with an index of 0.982 (S-CVI). After conducting exploratory factor analysis, a new model with 7 dimensions and 23 questions was proposed, down from the original 10 dimensions and 32 questions. This new model explains 71% of the variability. The model's goodness of fit indicators were CFI=0.995, TLI=0.994, and RMSEA=0.048. The results of McDonald's Omega showed high overall reliability with 0.9325. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a validated measurement instrument that contributes to improving patient safety conditions at the level of the hospital nursing team in highly complex establishments in Chile. However, the dimensions, such as the number of items, were reduced This questionnaire can be used in future nursing research by expanding the sample among health professionals in Chile. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: Applying this version of the questionnaire will be highly beneficial for clinical administrators and nursing staff. It will improve their care practices and promote patient safety in public hospitals in Chile, as well as assist in enhancing nursing policies.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Moral injury is prevalent among health care professionals, especially nurses. It can have negative personal consequences for clinicians, and indirectly impact the quality of patient care. Although nurses around the world experienced moral injury during the pandemic, it will continue to be a professional challenge. Thus, this study aimed to determine the psychometric properties of a scale measuring moral injury translated into Spanish. METHODS: A methodological study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted. After translating the Moral Injury Symptom Scale for Healthcare Professionals (MISS-HP) into Peruvian Spanish (MISS-HP-S) using International Test Commission methods, data were collected using online survey methods from a sample of 720 Peruvian nurses. Analytical methods included exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, and invariance by age were examined. The corrected homogeneity index, ordinal alpha, and McDonald's omega allowed the evaluation of internal reliability. RESULTS: Findings from this sample of nurses who were mostly female (92%), from coastal Peru (57%), and averaged 39 (± 11) years of age, provided support for the validity and reliability of the MISS-HP-S. Structural validity was endorsed by findings indicating consistent factorial structure and adequate invariance among different age groups. In this study, three factors were observed: guilt/shame, condemnation, and spiritual strength. Internal consistency values included an ordinal alpha of 0.795 and McDonald's omega of 0.835. CONCLUSION: These findings differ from those reported from previous studies in other cultural contexts, suggesting the influence of cultural and sample-specific factors in the perception of moral injury among Peruvian nurses. Because this evidence supports the validity of the MISS-HP-S, it can be used in professional practice and in future research to identify and address situations that contribute to nurse moral injury.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to analyze the psychometric properties of the Brief-COPE Inventory and to determine its concurrent validity by examining its association with perceived stress among Peruvian nurses. METHODS: A psychometric study was conducted with 434 Peruvian nurses to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Brief-COPE Inventory through confirmatory factor analysis. Three stepwise variable selection regression models were implemented. RESULTS: The three-factor model of the Brief-COPE Inventory demonstrated adequate fit indices (root mean square error of approximation = 0.052, standardized root mean square residual = 0.068, and both the comparative fit index and the Tucker-Lewis index = 0.95). Additionally, the factors were significantly correlated (p < 0.001), and the reliability was adequate (ω = 0.90). Nurses reported a medium level of perceived stress, with associated factors including having received stress management training, fear of COVID-19, and problem-focused coping strategies (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study confirms that the Brief-COPE Inventory is a valid tool for measuring coping strategies among Peruvian nurses due to its good model fit, excellent reliability, and concurrent validity with perceived stress. However, further research is needed to assess its validity in the specific areas of performance perceived by nursing professionals.

RESUMEN

Background and Purpose: The purpose of this study was to map the instruments for assessing the comfort of hospitalized older adults in the scientific literature, identifying those instruments validated and transculturally adapted to the realities of Brazil. Methods: This was a scoping review of 14 articles and a website retrieved from the following databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct/Elsevier, and gray literature (Oasisbr, Catalog of Theses and Dissertations [CAPES], OATD, BDBTD, and The Comfort Line). Results: Seventeen instruments for assessing the comfort of hospitalized older adults were mapped; however, none were specifically designed for this population, as they were originally intended for adults or individuals with neuropsychiatric conditions. Among these, three have been validated and transculturally adapted to the Brazilian context. Conclusions: This study reveals the need for a specific instrument tailored for hospitalized older adults without neuropsychiatric conditions.

RESUMEN

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To analyse the levels of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and burnout among nursing professionals working in the Imbabura region of Ecuador during the COVID-19 pandemic and identify the contributing socio-occupational factors. BACKGROUND: The high demand for care of COVID-19 patients led to increased work pressure on nurses, owing to increased demands for care and shortages of medical supplies and protective equipment. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted from September to December 2022 using a self-administered questionnaire addressed to nursing professionals who cared for COVID-19 patients. METHODS: The questionnaire included socio-demographic characteristics, the Spanish adaptation of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-Spanish), Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) for the evaluation of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the Spanish adaptation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS-Spanish) for burnout assessment. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. RESULTS: Of the 782 participants, 88.6% had a high level of burnout (MBI-HSS-Spanish scale score > 27). Female nurses, nurses with eight-hour work shifts, and older professionals exhibited high levels of anxiety and depression. Prolonged working hours in COVID-19 patient care services were found to be a risk factor for burnout and post-traumatic stress. CONCLUSIONS: Participating nurses presented with a high level of chronic work stress and exhibited signs of anxiety and depression during the period under consideration. Providing nurses with psychological support measures and performing liaison consultations will alleviate the psychological burden on nurses. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The study has shown that accounting for the environments where the emotional impact is greatest and how to reduce it would not only reduce anxiety, depression, and burnout in nurses but also improve the quality of care, not only in pandemic. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Nurses contributed to the conduct of the study by participating in the data collection via questionaries.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the acceptability, feasibility, usability, and preliminary effect of an electronic patient-reported outcome (ePRO) intervention for patients with breast cancer in Mexico. DESIGN: We conducted a multimethod non-randomised pilot study. We used a pre-test/post-test design for quantitative assessment of the intervention's effect on patients' supportive care needs and quality of life. We conducted in-depth interviews (IDIs) with participants and healthcare workers to explore the intervention's benefits and barriers and understand its feasibility. PARTICIPANTS: 50 women aged 20-75 diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer were enrolled within 2 weeks of starting neoadjuvant or adjuvant treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. We excluded illiterate women and those with visual impairment, cognitive disability or severe depression. IDIs were conducted with 18 participants and 10 healthcare providers. SETTING: Oncology services in three public hospitals of the Mexican Social Security Institute. INTERVENTION: The ePRO intervention consisted of a responsive web application for weekly symptom reporting combined with proactive follow-up by nurses guided by predefined clinical algorithms for 6 weeks. RESULTS: 50 women were enrolled out of 66 eligible patients approached (75.8%). All 50 completed the 4-week follow-up assessment (100% retention). Completion of the symptom registry declined from 100% in week 1 to 66% in week 6. Participants experienced decreases in supportive care needs and increased quality of life. The ePRO application was rated highly usable. Participants and health professionals both perceived intervention benefits. Drawbacks included poor fit for women receiving radiotherapy and challenges using the application for women with low digital literacy or experiencing severe symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study provided evidence of the high usability and potential efficacy of a web-based ePRO intervention. We revised recruitment during the pilot to include multiple facilities, and we will further revise for the randomised trial to address barriers to successful ePRO implementation. RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Hospitals may not be able to manage the chaotic environment during pandemics through classical management principles. Management can only be achieved with the help of effective leadership, appropriate flow of crisis management systems, teamwork, and collaboration. Nurse managers should have effective management skills. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the perception of the nurse managers' practices by nurses such as resource management, organization, communication, psychosocial, care-training, and decision-making practices in the management of the pandemic based on the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A quantitative, cross-sectional method was used, and a web-based online questionnaire was applied to collect data. This study included 182 nurses working in a public and private hospital in Istanbul. RESULTS: The nurses perceived the management practices of their managers at a moderate level. The leaders' resource management practices as low (16.5%), and medium (78.6%) perceive. There was a statistically significant difference (p<0.01) between the communication and team relations (p<0.05), resource management (p<0.01), care-training (p<0.05), and decision-making scores (p<0.01) of the nurses working in the private hospitals compared to those working in the public hospital. CONCLUSION: To effectively manage a complex and chaotic environment, nurse managers should trust their team, have speed and adaptation skills, be based on human factor principles, and provide a safe working environment. Education should be emphasized so that nurses can work in specialized areas and nurse managers can improve their management skills.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) theory suggests that an imbalance between job demands and available resources can lead to burnout, negatively affecting job satisfaction. Physical activity is recognized for its positive effects on psychological well-being and could play a crucial role in mitigating burnout and improving job satisfaction, especially in high-demand professions such as nursing. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the relationship between burnout, physical activity, and job satisfaction in Peruvian nurses, using the JD-R theory as a theoretical framework. METHODS: A cross-sectional and explanatory analysis was conducted on a sample of 420 Peruvian nurses, using a Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) design to analyze the relationships between burnout, physical activity, and job satisfaction. The instruments included the Ultra-Short Burnout Measure (IUB), the General Job Satisfaction Scale NTP 394, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). RESULTS: The findings showed a significant negative correlation between burnout and physical activity (ß = -.40, P < .001) and between burnout and job satisfaction (ß = -.46, P < .001). Physical activity exhibited a significant positive correlation with job satisfaction (ß = .22, P < .001). Moreover, mediation analysis confirmed that physical activity mediates the relationship between burnout and job satisfaction (ß = -.106, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The findings emphasize the importance of physical activity as a mediator in the relationship between burnout and job satisfaction among Peruvian nurses, highlighting the need to promote physical activity as a strategy to improve workplace well-being. It is suggested that enhancing access to and promotion of physical activity could mitigate the effects of burnout and improve job satisfaction, which is essential for the quality of care and the well-being of nursing staff. RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to discuss how compassion fatigue (CF) develops and its repercussions on the personal and professional lives of oncology nurses. METHODS: A discursive article, with systematic searches were performed in seven databases to find publications on CF in oncology nurses. RESULTS: So as to better organize the findings, three categories were developed to present and discuss issues related to CF: (1) Characteristics of CF and its developments: describes the components related to CF and the manifestation of this phenomenon; (2) Repercussions of compassion fatigue: reports on the impact of CF on the personal and professional life of oncology nurses; and (3) Resources for dealing with compassion fatigue: lists interventions, sources of support, professional personal training, qualified nursing care in the face of adversity, and gratitude and recognition. CONCLUSION: the factors that trigger or protect CF are multifactorial, with the need for collective and individual interventions as a way of helping oncology nurses to protect themselves, to avoid or manage this phenomenon. CF has a direct clinical impact on the life of the oncology nurse, causing several changes. It also indirectly impacts the patient's life clinically, as it is a phenomenon that has repercussions on the provision of care. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: CF affects the personal and professional lives of oncology nurses, so nurses need to seek resources to deal with it. Nursing staff employers and managers can use the evidence from this research to help nurses manage and protect themselves from compassion fatigue.

RESUMEN

Background: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) pose a pervasive concern among nursing professionals due to the high physical workload. Simultaneously, the complex relationship between MSDs and mental health outcomes in this population remains an area of significant interest and importance. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of MSDs and their relationships with burnout and psychological suffering within the nursing workforce. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2020 involving 291 nursing professionals in Brazil. Standardized questionnaires were employed to gather information on MSDs, mental health outcomes, and pertinent work-related factors. Robust statistical analyses were conducted to ascertain the prevalence of MSDs, establish associations between MSDs and mental health outcomes, and delineate the influence of work-related factors on these associations. Statistical analysis was performed using the R software. Results: The study revealed a significant prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs) among nursing workers, focusing on regions that include the lower back, upper back, neck, and shoulders. Individuals with MSIs in the lower back showed a marked increase in emotional exhaustion (p = 0.02), as did those with MSIs in the upper back (p <0.01) and depersonalization (p = 0.07). On the other hand, nursing professionals who reported MSIs in the neck and shoulders had considerably higher scores in emotional exhaustion (p <0.01 and p = 0.01, respectively) and depersonalization (p = 0.05 and p = 0.05, respectively). However, no significant correlations emerged between MSIs and depression or work-related factors. Conclusions: This study highlights the urgency of implementing proactive measures to prevent and manage MSDs within the nursing profession. Moreover, it emphasizes the critical need to enhance working conditions and provide robust support mechanisms to safeguard the mental health of nursing professionals.Open AccessOpen Access.
