BACKGROUND: In pediatric cardiology, the fact that some new biomarkers have assay-specific normal values has to be considered for correct clinical decisions. The current study aimed to provide age-adjusted normative values for NT-proBNP and Galectin-3 using the Abbott immunoassay system from a prospective French pediatric cohort sera collection and to validate our data for NT-proBNP on a second retrospective cohort. METHODS: We analyzed 283 consecutive samples for NT-proBNP and 140 samples for Galectin-3 collected from apparently healthy children (0-18 years) with outpatient treatment at our institution (Hôpital Necker-Enfants malades, Paris, France) during 24 months. RESULTS: For NT-proBNP and Galectin-3, we establish four age partitions, respectively two (<2 years / >2 years) and establish upper reference values and their 90 % CI for each biomarker (Galectin-3 (ng/mL): 56 [44-70] / 26 [23-29]). We evaluated the diagnostic performance of our upper reference values of NT-proBNP on a retrospective cohort (n = 428) with positive predictive value of 0.92. CONCLUSIONS: Using Abbott immunoassay system, we report age-specific reference values for NT-proBNP and for the first time for Galectin-3 in a healthy French pediatric cohort. These data call for larger cohort studies to define more robustly percentiles and diagnostic performance for NT-proBNP.

Background: Given rising youth sport participation, 8 to 10-year-olds increasingly display comparable lower-extremity injury incidence to 11 to 17-year-olds and require effective return to sport criteria. One such criterion which quantifies dynamic stability is the Y-Balance Test (YBT), though it has not been validated in children under age 11. Hypothesis/Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the performance of 8 to 10-year-old patients on the YBT after lower-extremity injury and determine how these results compare to larger samples of age-grouped athletes within the validated 11 to 17-year-old range. It was hypothesized that 8 to 10-year-olds would display different normalized YBT distances compared to 11 to 17-year-olds. Study Design: Cross-sectional Study. Methods: Patients (N=1093) aged 8 to 17 who presented to a pediatric sports medicine practice with a lower-extremity injury and completed the YBT between December 2015-May 2021 were included. Anterior, posteromedial, and posterolateral YBT scores were collected at return-to-sport for affected and unaffected limbs. Scores were normalized to limb length, and composite scores were created. Between-limb differences were calculated in groups of ages 8-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-17. Groups were also evaluated for differences by sex. Results: A rise in performance was observed in unaffected limb anterior reach from ages 8 to 10 years to 11 to 12 years followed by a subsequent significant decrease at older ages (p<0.001). Affected limb anterior reach differed between the youngest group and two oldest groups (p=0.004). Anterior and composite difference were significantly different between the oldest three groups (p=0.014 anterior; p=0.024 composite). No differences were observed between sexes in 8 to 10-year-olds, though 11 to 12-year-old females reached further during all eight distances. In the older three groups, males generally displayed greater between-limb differences. Conclusion: YBT scores, specifically anterior reach, demonstrated inconsistency by age and sex across a large adolescent cohort. Existing return-to-sport standards should not be used with younger athletes, and individual validation is required. Level of Evidence: Level III.

Consistent evidence increasingly highlights the significance of integrating sex and gender medicine to ensure a precision approach according to individual patient needs. Gender discrepancies emerge across various areas, even from pediatric age. The importance of recognizing these differences in pediatric nutrition is critical for the development of targeted nutritional strategies and interventions, particularly in cases of associated pathologies, including obesity, metabolic-associated fatty liver disease, eating disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease. The review highlights the biological and sociocultural factors that contribute to different nutritional needs and health outcomes in male and female children. By examining current evidence, we underscore the necessity for precision medicine approaches in pediatric care that consider these sex- and gender-based differences. Moreover, differences in dietary requirements and dietary patterns between males and females are evident, underscoring the need for precise nutrition strategies for a more accurate management of children and adolescents. This approach is essential for improving clinical outcomes and promoting equitable healthcare practices. This review aims to provide an overview of nutrition-related medical conditions exhibiting sex- and gender-specific discrepancies, which might lead to distinct outcomes requiring unique management and prevention strategies. Future research and public health initiatives should address these differences in designing effective lifestyle education programs and nutrition interventions targeting both children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To establish age and gender-specific paediatric and adult reference data for muscle function parameters assessed using Jumping Mechanography in the Indian population. METHODS: 2056 healthy individuals (1068 males), aged 5 to 60 years, performed 2 tests on a force platform (Leonardo Mechanograph, Novotec). Maximum power (Pmax) was assessed by single two legged jump and maximum force (Fmax) by multiple one legged hopping. LMS method was used to generate age and gender-specific reference curves for 5 - 20y group and mean ± SD and median ± IQR are presented for 21 - 60y group. RESULTS: In 5 - 20y group, Pmax and Fmax increased with age while in 21 - 60y group, the parameters declined with age. Females had lower Pmax values than males, consistently through all age groups. In children <15y, there were no intergender differences in Fmax, however, in further age groups, females had lower Fmax (p<0.001). Our participants showed lower Pmax and Fmax when compared with machine reference data based on German population (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: We present ethnicity-specific reference values for muscle function by Jumping Mechanography. These values are intended to help in clinical assessment of muscle function of Indian population and to identify those at risk of poor muscle function.

A patient-tailored therapy of the heterogeneous, neuropsychiatric disorder of Parkinson's disease (PD) aims to improve dopamine sensitive motor symptoms and associated non-motor features. A repeated, individual adaptation of dopamine substituting compounds is required throughout the disease course due to the progress of neurodegeneration. Therapeutic drug monitoring of dopamine substituting drugs may be an essential tool to optimize drug applications. We suggest plasma determination of levodopa as an initial step. The complex pharmacology of levodopa is influenced by its short elimination half-life and the gastric emptying velocity. Both considerably contribute to the observed variability of plasma concentrations of levodopa and its metabolite 3-O-methyldopa. These amino acids compete with other aromatic amino acids as well as branched chain amino acids on the limited transport capacity in the gastrointestinal tract and the blood brain barrier. However, not much is known about plasma concentrations of levodopa and other drugs/drug combinations in PD. Some examples may illustrate this lack of knowledge: Levodopa measurements may allow further insights in the phenomenon of inappropriate levodopa response. They may result from missing compliance, interactions e.g. with treatments for other mainly age-related disorders, like hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidaemia, rheumatism or by patients themselves independently taken herbal medicines. Indeed, uncontrolled combination of compounds for accompanying disorders as given above with PD drugs might increase the risk of side effects. Determination of other drugs used to treat PD in plasma such as dopamine receptor agonists, amantadine and inhibitors of catechol-O-methyltransferase or monoamine oxidase B may refine and improve the value of calculations of levodopa equivalents. How COMT-Is change levodopa plasma concentrations? How other dopaminergic and non-dopaminergic drugs influence levodopa levels? Also, delivery of drugs as well as single and repeated dosing and continuous levodopa administrations with a possible accumulation of levodopa, pharmacokinetic behaviour of generic and branded compounds appear to have a marked influence on efficacy of drug treatment and side effect profile. Their increase over time may reflect progression of PD to a certain degree. Therapeutic drug monitoring in PD is considered to improve the therapeutic efficacy in the course of this devastating neurologic disorder and therefore is able to contribute to the patients' precision medicine. State-of-the-art clinical studies are urgently needed to demonstrate the usefulness of TDM for optimizing the treatment of PD.

Certificates of medical evidence are often used to aid the court in assessing the cause and severity of a victim's injuries. In cases with significant blood loss, the question whether the bleeding itself was life-threatening sometimes arises. To answer this, the volume classification of hypovolemic shock described in ATLS® is commonly used as an aid, where a relative blood loss > 30% is considered life-threatening. In a recent study of deaths due to internal haemorrhage, many cases had a relative blood loss < 30%. However, many included cases had injuries which could presumably cause deaths via other mechanisms, making the interpretation uncertain. To resolve remaining ambiguity, we studied whether deaths due to isolated liver lacerations had a relative blood loss < 30%, a cause of death where the mechanism of death is presumably exsanguination only. Using the National Board of Forensic Medicine autopsy database, we identified all adult decedents, who had undergone a medico-legal autopsy 2001-2021 (n = 105 952), where liver laceration was registered as the underlying cause of death (n = 102). Cases where death resulted from a combination of also other injuries (n = 79), and cases that had received hospital care, were excluded (n = 4), leaving 19 cases. The proportion of internal haemorrhage to calculated total blood volume in these fatal pure exsanguinations ranged from 12 to 52%, with 63% of cases having a proportion < 30%. Our results lend further support to the claim that the volume classification of hypovolemic shock described in ATLS® is inappropriate for assessing the degree of life-threatening haemorrhage in medico-legal cases.

BACKGROUND: In order to optimise the support of children with cochlear implants (CI), it is very important to detect slow developmental processes as early as possible. Data from the LittlEARS® Auditory Questionnaire (LEAQ) from children with early bilateral CI are evaluated and presented in relation to age and hearing age and compared with language development data recorded later. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective multicentre study included data from a total of 554 children for whom at least one LEAQ was completed during the course of CI rehabilitation. Children without additional disabilities who received bilateral simultaneous or sequential CI treatment were included. RESULTS: As expected, there are high correlations between hearing age (HA) and the overall LEAQ total score. When analysed according to chronological age (CA), development runs roughly parallel to the development of children with normal hearing, albeit at a lower level. Children implanted early up to an age of ≤ 12 months consistently achieve approximately 7-8 raw points more. Only the LEAQ results of the later test times (from the age of 18 months) correlate with some areas of the speech development test for children (SETK; areas 3-5). CONCLUSION: The earliest possible detection of critical developmental processes in children with CI is extremely important. In the case of very early CI fitting, the CA should be used as a reference measure in diagnostics. The LEAQ values determined for the group of children with CI are suitable to a limited extent as generally valid reference values for children with early bilateral CI. Further studies should continue to work out the correlations between early preverbal development and later speech development.

Experiments should always be based on control values. This assumption fully applies to cardiovascular parameters, such as heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP), which are highly sensitive to various external and internal stimuli and can already be significantly altered when an experiment begins. Therefore, it is necessary to determine which values are defined as a starting point (i.e., control and baseline) or compare them with valid reference values if the goal is to evaluate the changes after experimental intervention. A generally accepted principle is a reciprocal relationship between BP and HR, in which one parameter affects the other and vice versa. BP can be measured using two methods-noninvasively (tail-cuff) and invasively (telemetry, direct measurements of BP after introducing the sensor directly into the artery), and HR directly or by extrapolation from BP recordings. This study does not aim to evaluate the results of individual studies, but to review whether there are differences in control (baseline) BP values in normotensive and hypertensive male rats using invasive versus noninvasive methods, and to investigate whether there is a causal relationship between BP and HR in in vivo experiments with male rats.

BACKGROUND: Pulp pinch (PP) is a vital hand movement involving muscle strength and sensory integration. Previous research has primarily focused on Maximal Voluntary Contraction, but PP encompasses broader parameters. PURPOSE: This study aims to establish normative data for a comprehensive evaluation of thumb and index force control during PP, including endurance, precision, accuracy in unilateral PP, and force coordination in bilateral PP. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: Three hundred and twenty eight healthy Italian cis-gender participants (169 females, 159 males) were enrolled in a multiparametric force control evaluation of pinch grip, consisting in: sustained contraction (SC: ability to maintain a stable contraction at 40% MVC, measured as the time until exhaustion), dynamic contraction (DC: the ability to modulate precisely and accurately force output to follow a dynamic force trace), bimanual strength coordination (BSC: the ability to coordinate in-phase bimanual forces at different combined magnitudes) tasks. The sample was divided per sex and stratified in five age groups taking into account hand dominance. Differences in tasks' results between age, sex and hand-dominance were analysed. RESULTS: Endurance (SC) was similar between younger and older adults (η2 =0.047 (Females) and η2 < 0.007 (Males)). Older adults exhibited lower precision (DC) and coordination (BSC) compared to young adults in both sexes (η2 >0.16). Females demonstrated greater endurance (SC) but lower precision and coordination (BSC) compared to males (0.01 <η2 <0.1). No hand dominance effect emerged in SC and DC. CONCLUSIONS: Force accuracy and precision to modulate pinch force to perform a visual feedback force-matching task (DC) and force coordination between hands (BSC) worsen at increasing age. Hand dominance did not influence either endurance or precision of pinch grip in visual-feedback guided task.

Obstructive lung diseases such as bronchial asthma, COPD, and cystic fibrosis are a burden on many patients across the globe. Spirometry is considered the gold standard for diagnosing airflow obstruction, but it can be difficult for pediatric patients to do and requires a lot of effort. As a result, healthcare providers need new, effortless methods to diagnose airway obstructions, particularly in young children and individuals unable to perform the spirometry maneuver. The forced oscillation technique is a modern method requiring only tidal breathing combined with the application of external, source of low-amplitude oscillations to evaluate the respiratory system's response. It might be essential for identifying early respiratory changes caused by smoking, childhood asthma, and may prove more sensitive than spirometry in identifying peripheral airway disturbances or evaluating the long-term success of therapy. This review describes the methodology and the indications for the forced oscillation technique and outlines its relevance in clinical practice.

After COVID-19 long term respiratory symptoms and reduced lung function including maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) have been reported. However, no studies have looked at MIP and MEP in all disease groups and the reference materials collection methods differ substantially. We aimed to determine MIP and MEP in individuals after COVID-19 infection with different disease severity using reference material of healthy control group obtained using the same standardized method. Patients with COVID-19 were included March 2020-March 2021 at Rigshospitalet, Denmark. MIP and MEP were measured using microRPM. Predicted MIP and MEP were calculated using reference material obtained from 298 healthy adults aged 18-97 years using the same method. In SECURe, 145 participants were measured median 5 months after COVID-19 diagnosis and of these 16% had reduced MIP and/or MEP. There was reduced spirometry and total lung capacity, but not reduced diffusion capacity in those with abnormal MIP and/or MEP compared with normal MIP and MEP. Of those with reduced MIP and/or MEP at 5 months, 80% still had reduced MIP and/or MEP at 12 months follow-up. In conclusion, few have reduced MIP and/or MEP 5 months after COVID-19 and little improvement was seen over time.

BACKGROUND: Glenoid version is an important factor in the evaluation of shoulder stability and shoulder pathologies. However, there are neither established reference values nor known factors that influence the glenoid version, even though valid reference values are needed for diagnostic and orthopaedic surgery like corrective osteotomy and total or reverse shoulder arthroplasty (TSA/RSA). The aim of our population-based study was to identify factors influencing the glenoid version and to establish reference values from a large-scale population cohort. RESULTS: Our study explored the glenoid versions in a large sample representing the general adult population. We investigated 3004 participants in the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP). Glenoid version was measured for both shoulders via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Associations with the glenoid version were calculated for sex, age, body height, body weight and BMI. The reference values for glenoid version in the central European population range between -9° and 7.5°, while multiple factors are associated with the glenoid version. CONCLUSION: To achieve a reliable interpretation prior to orthopaedic surgery, sex- and age-adjusted reference values are proposed.

OBJECTIVE: The Landing Error Scoring System (LESS) is a movement analysis tool proposed to identify the risk of anterior cruciate ligament injuries, very useful for injury prevention. The aim of this study is to review the variants of the LESS, their normative scores and the differences according to sex and sport practiced. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus and ScienceDirect databases were searched from inception to October 19, 2023. Studies were eligible if the objective was finding normative or reference scores for the LESS, analyze the differences between sexes or sports, or used some variant of the test. Results were limited to available full-text articles published in English in peer-reviewed journals. RESULTS: Of the 360 articles identified, 20 were included for a full analysis (18,093 participants, age = 8-30 years, males = 70.6%). The military population was the most frequently analyzed (7 studies, n = 16,603). Results showed six variants of the LESS and average values ranged from 2.56 to 7.1. Males and females showed different pattern landing with errors in different planes. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight the need for more field studies on LESS reference scores, particularly for females and basketball or hockey players. Further research is required before conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis.

AIM: The 2018 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics abnormal uterine bleeding System-1 defines menstrual flow volume on a 3-point scale based on subjective assessment. However, the normal flow range has not been established, and it is unclear whether subjective assessment is accurate. We investigated the normal menstrual flow volume range in Japanese women and whether the actual measured menstrual flow volume agreed with the subjective evaluation. METHODS: We included female menstruating volunteers aged 18-49 years in this prospective observational study. Menstrual napkins were weighed before and after use for up to three cycles, and the values were recorded in an online diary. RESULTS: Overall, 211 participants were recruited. All items were completed by 167 participants, and 497 menstrual cycles were included in the analysis. The median total menstrual flow volume per cycle for 497 cycles was 56.7 g. The 5th-95th percentile values ranged from 15.7 to 166.4 g. The mean value was 77.6 ± 99.6 g, with no significant differences according to age group. In the 25 cycles corresponding to heavy flow, that is, above the 95th percentile of measured flow volume, 92% were underrated as "normal" by subjective evaluation, and only 8% were correctly rated as "heavy." CONCLUSIONS: Our results clarify the actual menstrual flow volume in the Japanese population; this will contribute toward making women aware of the normal range of menstrual flow volume, which may facilitate appropriate preconception care.

PURPOSE: The impact of pediatric traumatic brain injury (pTBI) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children and adolescents remains understudied. Short scales have some advantages in terms of economy and administration over longer scales, especially in younger children. The aim of the present study is to psychometrically evaluate the six-item German version of the QOLIBRI-OS-KID/ADO scale for children and adolescents. In addition, reference values from a general German pediatric population are obtained to assist clinicians and researchers in the interpretation of HRQoL after pTBI. METHODS: A total of 297 individuals after TBI and 1997 from a general population sample completed the questionnaire. Reliability, validity, and comparability of the assessed construct were examined. RESULTS: The questionnaire showed satisfactory reliability (α = 0.75 and ω = 0.81 and α = 0.85 and ω = 0.86 for the TBI and general population samples, respectively). The QOLIBRI-OS-KID/ADO was highly correlated with its long version (R2 = 67%) and showed an overlap with disease-specific HRQoL (R2 = 55%) in the TBI sample. The one-dimensional factorial structure could be replicated and tested for measurement invariance between samples, indicating a comparable HRQoL construct assessment. Therefore, reference values and cut-offs indicating clinically relevant impairment could be provided using percentiles stratified by factors significantly associated with the total score in the regression analyses (i.e., age group and gender). CONCLUSION: In combination with the cut-offs, the QOLIBRI-OS-KID/ADO provides a cost-effective screening tool, complemented by interpretation guidelines, which may help to draw clinical conclusions and indications such as further administration of a longer version of the instrument to gain more detailed insight into impaired HRQoL domains or omission of further steps in the absence of an indication.

Background: Preliminary data in a randomly selected pediatric cohort study in 8-year-olds suggested a rate of positivity to a methacholine challenge test that was unexpectedly high, roughly 30%. The current recommendation for a negative methacholine test is a 20% decrease in the forced expiratory volume in one second at a dose greater than 400 µg. This was derived from studies in adults using the obsolete English Wright nebulizer. One explanation for the high incidence of positivity in the study in 8-year-olds could be that children deposit more methacholine on a µg/kg basis than adults, due to differences in their breathing patterns. The purpose of this study was to determine if pediatric breathing patterns could result in a higher dose of methacholine depositing in the lungs of children based on µg/kg body weight compared with adults. Methods: An AeroEclipse Breath Actuated nebulizer delivered methacholine aerosol, generated from a 16 mg/mL solution, for one minute, using age-appropriate breathing patterns for a 70 kg adult and a 30 and 50 kg child produced by a breathing simulator. Predicted lung deposition was calculated from the collected dose of methacholine on a filter placed at the nebulizer outport, multiplied by the fraction of the aerosol mass contained in particles ≤5 µm. The dose of methacholine on the inspiratory filter was assayed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Particle size was measured using laser diffraction technology. Results: The mean (95% confidence intervals) predicted pulmonary dose of methacholine was 46.1 (45.4, 46.8), 48.6 (45.3, 51.9), and 36.1 (34.2, 37.9) µg/kg body weight for the 30 kg child, 50 kg child, and 70 kg adult, respectively. Conclusions: On a µg/kg body weight, the predicted pulmonary dose of methacholine was greater with the pediatric breathing patterns than with the adult pattern.

OBJECTIVE: To establish the reference standard of the median nerve conduction study (NCS) in Korea. METHODS: A total of 648 median motor and 602 median sensory NCSs from 349 Korean healthy volunteers were tested and analyzed prospectively. Equipment calibration, assessment of intraand inter-rater reliability, and the NCSs per se were conducted according to a predetermined protocol. A reference standard was established from uncertainty components for the following parameters: the onset and peak latencies; the baseline-to-peak and peak-to-peak amplitudes; the area and duration of the negative wave; and the nerve conduction velocity. The effects of sex, age and stimulation intensity were analyzed. RESULTS: Each measured value of 648 median motor and 602 median sensory nerves were obtained and presented with both mean and expanded uncertainties, as well as mean and standard deviations. The cut-off values with expanded uncertainty were determined for different age and sex groups. After adjusting for anthropometric covariates, all parameters except duration were affected by age, and sex appeared to influence both duration and area. While stimulation intensity significantly affected some parameters including latencies, the effect sizes were negligible. CONCLUSION: We propose the median NCS reference standard using the largest Korean dataset ever available. The use of the traceable and reliable reference standard is anticipated to promote more accurate and dependable diagnosis and appropriate management of median neuropathies in Korea.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The Oswestry disability index (ODI) is widely utilized as a patient reported outcome (PRO) tool to assess patients presenting with low back pain (LBP) and following thoracolumbar spine surgery. No primary study has calculated the baseline range of ODI values in the diverse American population. Establishing age-adjusted normative values for ODI in the American population is crucial for assessing the utility of treatment strategies. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to describe the baseline range of functional low back disability as measured by the ODI in an American population. STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: Cross-Sectional Observational Study. PATIENT SAMPLE: A total of 1214 participants were recruited from the United States in January 2024 using a combination of the Connect and PrimePanel platforms by CloudResearch to complete a survey administered on a RedCap online database. The survey consisted of 10 demographic questions and the 10 ODI survey questions. The distribution of the survey was designed to obtain approximately 100 respondents in each of the following age groups: 18-29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, 70 to 79, and 80 to 89. The distribution of the sample was similarly designed to match the United States Census racial data with 78.1% White, 13.9% Black, and 7.9% other. OUTCOME MEASURES: Oswestry disability index (ODI). METHODS: A crowd-sourcing platform called Cloudresearch was used to collect a representative sample of the US population by answering questions of the Oswestry disability questionnaire (ODQ), a 10-question survey. RESULTS: The final sample size was 797 participants including 386 (48.4%) males and 411 (51.6%) females; 169 participants were excluded that did not complete the survey and an additional 248 were excluded for failing attention check questions. The overall mean ODI score for the combined age groups was 14.35 (95% CI [13.33, 15.37]). The mean ODI scores increased with age, with the highest mean ODI in ages 70 to 79 at 18.0 (95% CI [14.76, 21.24]). Female participants reported higher mean ODI scores than their male counterparts in the 18 to 29 age group (p=.01), 50 to 59 age group (p=.01), and 60 to 69 age group (p=.02). Additionally, a weak positive correlation was found between Body Mass Index (BMI) and ODI scores (r = 0.22, p<.001). CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate a clear trend of increased disability with age. This study describes the baseline range of functional low back pain disability in the United States population. By defining these parameters, healthcare professionals can better tailor age and sex-specific interventions to manage disability in the aging US population, ultimately improving patient care and both operative and nonoperative treatment plans for LBP-related thoracolumbar pathology.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing popularity and use of Global Lung Function Initiative (GLI) spirometric reference equations, the appropriateness of the race-specific and race-neutral GLI spirometric reference models among the Indian population has not been systematically investigated. METHODS: In this cross-sectional analysis, we used spirometric measurements of 1123 healthy Indian adults (≥18 years of age). We computed reference values and z-scores for forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), and FEV1/FVC from race-specific and race-neutral GLI reference equations as well as from a widely used Indian reference equation. We studied heterogeneity between GLI equations and the Indian equations using Bland-Altman analysis, and the differences between the reference and observed values were compared using the Friedman test. RESULTS: In Bland-Altman analysis, significant heterogeneity in FVC and FEV1 between race-specific and Indian equations was observed (bias: 10.4 % and 14.1 %, respectively), with less bias for FEV1/FVC (3.76 %). The race-neutral equations showed almost similar bias (9.8 %, 13.8 %, and 3.8 % for FVC, FEV1, and FEV1/FVC, respectively). Median differences in race-specific reference values from observed values for FVC and FEV1 were 0.49L and 0.44L, respectively, decreasing slightly with race-neutral equations (0.46L and 0.43L) whereas Indian models showed minimal differences (FVC: 0.10L, FEV1: 0.05L). Z-scores for FVC and FEV1 were significantly different between race-specific and race-neutral GLI equations, and both differed from Indian equations. CONCLUSION: Both race-specific and race-neutral GLI reference equations are significantly different from the Indian equations, which underscores the importance of determining the suitability of global reference models before being used indiscriminately.
