RESUMEN

Infectious sporadic abortions in cattle are mainly caused by opportunistic bacteria and fungi usually present in environmental or gastrointestinal and reproductive microbiota of healthy animals. A retrospective analysis was carried out to evaluate the main opportunistic microorganisms involved in bovine abortions recorded at INTA Balcarce (Argentina) from 1997 to 2023, accounting for 2.2% of the total diagnosed etiologies of bovine abortion. The opportunistic agents identified as the cause of abortion in 29 fetuses were bacteria (90%) and fungi (10%). Escherichia coli (n = 8), Trueperella pyogenes (n = 5), and Histophilus somni (n = 4) were the bacterial species most often identified as causing infectious abortions, whereas Aspergillus spp. (n = 3) was implicated in all fungal abortions identified. Pure culture of bacteria or fungus was achieved from abomasal content and/or lung essential. Main microscopic findings were bronchopneumonia, myo- and epicarditis, meningitis, and portal hepatitis. Herein, we highlight the importance of detecting potential infectious bacteria in cultures to improve etiological diagnosis of bovine abortions associated with compatible microscopic findings to confirm the etiology.

RESUMEN

The materials of the article are based on the results of our past studies of morphological and immunohistochemical features of placental damage due to 137Cs incorporation. OBJECTIVE: to determine the effectiveness of radioprotective therapy in preventing reproductive losses and perinatal consequences associated with the incorporation of radionuclides in the placenta. MATERIALS AND METHODS: According to the research design, the first group consisted of 153 women with reproductive losses in anamnesis and signs of termination of the current pregnancy. The control consisted of 30 women with a physiological pregnancy and an uncomplicated history. Based on the fact that one of the causes of premature termination of pregnancy is the vulnerable effect of 137Cs incorporated in the placenta, «Apple Pectin Antioxidant¼ (the «APA¼) with a high sorption potential was included in preventive measures regarding reproductive losses and perinatal consequences. The effectiveness of therapy with the inclusion of «Apple Pectin Antioxidant¼ was evaluated based on indicators of the fetoplacental complex and pregnancy scenarios. The results were compared with the effectiveness of standard treatment for habitual miscarriage of pregnancy. RESULTS: It was established that the destructive effect of incorporated 137Cs leads to placental dysfunction and fetal distress. Therapy with the inclusion of «APA¼ more significantly than standard treatment increases the progesterone-synthesizing function of the placenta, microcirculation, adaptation potential, and antioxidant protection of cells with the efficiency of 7.5 %, 10.7 %, 17.7 %, and 43.4 %, respectively. «APA¼ has a positive effect on the scenarios of pregnancy. «APA¼ in the composition of therapy to preserve pregnancy contributed to a decrease in the frequency of premature births by 11.4 % and an extension of their term to 34 weeks of gestation. Extending the gestational age of preterm birth reduced the frequency of severe asphyxia by 18.7 %, hypoxic-ischemic central nervous system injury by 13.5 %, respiratory distress by 17.3 %, and intraventricular hemorrhage 2nd and 3rd degrees by 12.7 %.All children were born alive due to the preservation of the compensatory ability of the placenta. CONCLUSIONS: Termination of pregnancy is a universal reaction of the mother and the fetus to negative exogenous and endogenous influences. Placental dysfunction is the most frequent cause of reproductive losses. Incorporated 137Cs is one of the factors that disturb the architecture of the placenta. Extreme effects depend on the number of incorporated 137Cs and the compensatory capacity of the placenta. Today, the possibility of internal exposure to 137Cs is associated due to consumption of agricultural products. Unfortunately, the level of food contamination with radionuclides remains higher than permissible. Living in an area with a standard radiation background does not guarantee a person the radiation safety of agricultural products. The confirmation is the accumulation of 137Cs in the placentas of women from different regions of Ukraine. The high efficiency of therapy with «APA¼ is associated with the removal of radionuclides and the minimization of the effect of internal irradiation, which made it possible to reduce the frequency of termination of pregnancy by 28.0 % due to the reduction of cases of premature births (-11.4 %), spontaneous abortions (-11.0 %), termination of pregnancy (-5.5 %). The «APA¼ is advisable to prescribe from pregravid and during pregnancy to all women, regardless of the region of residence.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: to investigate the morphological and immunohistochemical features of placental damage due to theincorporation of 137Cs depending on the scenario of pregnancy completion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study material consisted of placentas from 60 women with reproductive losses inanamnesis and signs of termination of the current pregnancy (first group) and placental samples from 30 women with an uncomplicated gestation and an unencumbered anamnesis (control group). The detailed study required the distribution of placental samples from the first group into subgroups. Subgroup 1a included 38 placentas from women who gave birth at 37-40 weeks, despite signs of termination of the current pregnancy. Subgroup 1b - placentas of 13 women who gave birth at a gestation period of 28-36 weeks + 6 days. Subgroup 1c - 9 placental samples from women who gave birth at a gestation period of 22-27 weeks + 6 days. The volumetric activity of the 137Cs in the placentas was measured using ß-spectrometer. The histology of the placenta was studied using a standard technique. The following expressions were studied in placenta: CD31 / PECAM-1, CD45 / T200 / LCA, CD56 / NCAM-1, CEA / CD66e Ab-2, Vimentin, using indirect streptavidin peroxidase detection method. RESULTS: Placentas accumulate 137Cs. The different volumetric activity of the isotope correlates with scenarios of pregnancy. Due to the action of incorporated 137Cs with a specific mass of more than 1.1 Bq/kg, placental dysfunction develops. The consequences of placental dysfunction depend on the volumetric activity of the 137Cs and the preservation of adaptive and compensatory reactions in the placenta. Morphological and immunohistochemical features of placental damage to incorporated 137Cs were established, depending on the scenario of completion of pregnancy. A marker of unfavorable completion of pregnancy is the expression of a carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in the placenta. CONCLUSIONS: Premature termination of pregnancy (PTP) is a multifactorial pathology associated with pathological changes in immune and neuroendocrine regulation and hereditary, infectious, and environmental factors that disrupt the adaptation mechanisms in the mother-placenta-fetus system. Intraplacental irradiation of 137Cs is one of the factors in the multifactorial nature of reproductive losses. As a result of intraplacental irradiation of 137Cs, the architecture of the placenta is disturbed, the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines CD45 and CD56 increases, and the coagulation cascade is activated. Extreme effects depend on the volumetric activity of the isotope incorporated in the placenta and the organ's compensatory capacity. Accumulation of up to 1.0 Bq/kg 137Cs does not affect the course of gestation. Internal irradiation with an activity of 4.5-10.4 Bq/kg 137Cs triggers late preterm labor. The nature of the damages corresponds to the category of «lesion of the maternal stroma¼ of the placenta. The volumetric activity of 137Cs over 10.4 Bq/kg is a probable cause of early preterm labor and antenatal fetal death. At the same time, the maternal and fetal structures of the placenta suffer damage. Expression of vimentin is a marker of placental destruction due to internal irradiation of 137Cs with a specific gravity of more than 4.5 Bq/kg. Expression of CEA in the structures of the placenta of women with PTP is a unique find and marker of premature birth and antenatal fetal death with intraplacental irradiation of 137Cs with an activity of more than 4.5 Bq/kg.

RESUMEN

The aim of this work was to identify causes of abortion through laboratory investigations in sheep flocks in Uruguay. One hundred cases of abortion, comprising 58 fetuses, 36 fetuses with their placentas, and 6 placentas were investigated in 2015-2021. Cases were subjected to gross and microscopic pathologic examinations, and microbiological and serological testing for the identification of causes of abortion, including protozoal, bacterial, and viral pathogens. An etiologic diagnosis was determined in 46 (46%) cases, including 33 (33%) cases caused by infectious pathogens, as determined by the detection of a pathogen along with the identification of fetoplacental lesions attributable to the detected pathogen. Twenty-seven cases (27%) were caused by Toxoplasma gondii, 5 (5%) by Campylobacter fetus subspecies fetus, and 1 (1%) by an unidentified species of Campylobacter. Fourteen cases (14%) had inflammatory and/or necrotizing fetoplacental lesions compatible with an infectious etiology. Although the cause for these lesions was not clearly identified, T. gondii was detected in 4 of these cases, opportunistic bacteria (Bacillus licheniformis, Streptococcus sp.) were isolated in 2 cases, and bovine viral diarrhea virus 1 subtype i (BVDV-1i) was detected in another. Campylobacter jejuni was identified in 1 (1%) severely autolyzed, mummified fetus. BVDV-2b was identified incidentally in one fetus with an etiologic diagnosis of toxoplasmosis. Microscopic agglutination test revealed antibodies against ≥1 Leptospira serovars in 15/63 (23.8%) fetuses; however, Leptospira was not identified by a combination of qPCR, culture, fluorescent antibody testing nor immunohistochemistry. Neospora caninum, Chlamydia abortus, Chlamydia pecorum, Coxiella burnetii and border disease virus were not detected in any of the analyzed cases. Death was attributed to dystocia in 13 (13%) fetuses delivered by 8 sheep, mostly from one highly prolific flock. Congenital malformations including inferior prognathism, a focal hepatic cyst, and enterohepatic agenesis were identified in one fetus each, the latter being the only one considered incompatible with postnatal life. Toxoplasmosis, campylobacteriosis and dystocia were the main identified causes of fetal losses. Despite the relatively low overall success rate in establishing an etiologic diagnosis, a systematic laboratory workup in cases of abortion is of value to identify their causes and enables zoonotic pathogens surveillance.

RESUMEN

This study describes for the first time an abortion outbreak caused by Neospora caninum in farmed red deer. During a 5-year period, farmed hinds, naturally mated, were regularly ultrasound monitored to detect reproductive losses over their gestation. During the 4 years previous to the outbreak, abortion rates ranged from 4.7 to 8.6% (average 6.5%), and serology for indirect diagnosis of neosporosis and toxoplasmosis was performed. At the fifth year, the abortion rate increased to 25.3%. During this outbreak, three aborted foetuses and their placentas were recovered and submitted to laboratory for etiological diagnosis. Blood samples were collected from the 81 hinds at the end of the gestational period and the seropositivity rate for N. caninum, Toxoplasma gondii, Brucella abortus, bovine viral diarrhoea virus and bovine alphaherpesvirus type 1 was 66.7%, 67.9%, 0.0%, 8.6% and 0.0%, respectively. Neospora caninum-seropositive hinds (OR = 5.7, P = 0.0271) and hinds with high antibody titres to N. caninum (OR = 7.4, P = 0.0130) were more likely to abort than seronegative hinds. In addition, N. caninum seropositivity rate in the aborted hinds was higher (OR = 5.4, P = 0.033) than the non-aborted hinds. No association was found between T. gondii nor BVDV-seropositivity and abortions. Typical protozoal histopathologic findings (necrotizing non suppurative encephalitis, meningitis, myocarditis, hepatitis, among others) were observed in all foetuses. Neospora caninum was immunolabelled by immunohistochemistry in several tissues from two foetuses, and infection was also confirmed in the three foetuses by serology and/or DNA detection. No other abortifacient agent was detected in the foetuses. Their dams showed high N. caninum antibody titres (≥ 6400). Serologic evidence and epidemiological data recorded suggested a point-source of N. caninum infection before the occurrence of the outbreak, probably related with contaminated feedstuff with oocysts. Moreover, the intensive production system with a high stocking rate could be also considered a factor which might have increased the risk of horizontal N. caninum infection in this herd.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The problem of pregnancy losses and infertility in autoimmune pathology is one of the most urgent problems of modern reproductive medicine. Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) are very often connected with reproductive failures such as miscarriage, antenatal fetal death, preeclampsia and even infertility and failure of in vitro fertilization (IVF) program. AIM: To evaluate the difference in immune status of aPL-positive women with infertility compared to healthy women and explain the possible mechanism of pathological effects of aPL, a correlation analysis between the level of aPL and the lymphocytes subpopulation was performed. STUDY DESIGN: We observed 280 women of reproductive age. Of these, 191 who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study. All 191 women were tested for lupus anticoagulant (LA), antibodies (isotypes IgG, IgM) to cardiolipin (aCL), ß2-glycoprotein-1 (b2-GpI). Of these, 128 women had high level of aPL. The subpopulation of lymphocyte in aPL-positive women was compared with healthy women without reproductive pathology. RESULTS: In women with aPL, the absolute number of CD3+ lymphocytes, cytotoxic lymphocytes CD3+CD8+, T helpers CD3+CD4+, and the absolute levels of NK-cells and NK T-cells were significantly lower. In women with infertility and aPL circulation, we found the significantly higher absolute and relative level of CD19+ lymphocytes compared with healthy women. CONCLUSION: T-regulatory cells play an important role in inducing tolerance to fetal alloantigens and limiting the intensity of the immune response. NK cells play an important role in processes of trophoblast invasion and spiral artery remodeling. Significantly reduced level of T-cells found in women with aPL may be associated with insufficient decidualization of endometrium for embryo invasion, which is clinically manifested by IVF failure.

RESUMEN

Currently fertility specialists pay close attention to miscarriage. Spontaneous abortion and recurrent pregnancy loss in an early period of gestation are a frequent complication of pregnancy. Etiology of miscarriage includes genetic abnormalities, immunological disorders, endocrine abnormalities, infections and lifestyle factors. About 40% of cases of pregnancy losses remain unexplained. The role of male factor in miscarriages is considered in the review. The influence of advanced paternal ages, sperm DNA fragmentation, chromosomal abnormalities on pregnancy loss in natural conception or by assisted reproductive technique are described.

RESUMEN

The gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. N. gonorrhoeae being tropic to columnar epithelium, primarily infects mucosa of urogenital system, rectum, pharynx and conjunctiva. According the WHO, in 2016 about 87 million of new cases of gonorrhea were registered in the age group of 15-49 years old. The number of new gonorrhea cases increases steadily in many countries. The significant contribution into propagation of infection is made by males practicing sex with males, migrants, commercial sex workers, ethnic minorities. The undetected cervical gonococcus infection can result in such severe complications as inflammatory diseases of organs of small pelvis and infertility that directly impacts the reproductive losses of population. The anorectal and and pharyngeal gonorrhea very often takes asymptomatic course that complicates diagnostic and effects the statistical picture of morbidity. The apprehension of world trends in epidemiology of gonococcal infection can become a key point in implementation and development of national and international programs of prevention of propagation of this disease. The review of national and world publications concerning actual clinical epidemiological characteristics of gonococcus infection was implemented through such on-line search systems as PubMed, Google Scholar, BioMed Central (95 publications in total). The conclusions are made about steady increasing of morbidity due to propagation of infection in groups of risky sexual behavior, application of modern diagnostic means and patterns of clinical course of gonorrhea. The role of sexually transmitted infections in development of infertility, inflammatory diseases of organs of small pelvis, miscarriage and reproductive losses of poplation is marked.

RESUMEN

The aims of the present study were to determine the Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity rates in farmed red deer hinds from Argentina and their relationship with reproductive losses. Over a 2-year period, 449 hinds from 4 commercial farms were serologically tested at late gestation for N. caninum and T. gondii by IFAT. During the first year, a sequential serological analysis was carried out at 3 different time points to analyze antibody dynamics from mating until the end of the gestation period. Fetal and postnatal mortality rates were estimated by 3 successive ultrasound scannings (us) annually and a breeding control carried out after the calving period. Ultrasound fetal measurements were used to estimate conception date and gestational age of abortions. The seropositivity rate for N. caninum was 25.5% (37/145) for the yearlings and 34.2% (104/304) for the adults, while for T. gondii was 64.3% (93/145) and 78.3% (238/304), respectively. Abortions detected at us1 and us2 were 13/21 (61.9%) with a range of gestational age of 30-87 days, while abortions detected at us3 were 8/21 (38.1%) with a range of gestational age of 49-209 days. The fetal mortality rate was 4% and 5.8%, while the postnatal mortality rate was 18.8% and 4.1% of 101 yearlings and 294 adult pregnant hinds, respectively. Most seropositive hinds to both protozoans showed a stable antibody titer pattern from mating to the end of gestation, and a lower proportion developed an increase in titers suggesting infection recrudescence. Seroconversion during the gestational period was demonstrated in 6 and 50 hinds for N. caninum and T. gondii, respectively. Hinds with fetal mortality were more likely to be seropositive to N. caninum (OR = 3.1) or have N. caninum titers ≥400 (OR = 27.4) than hinds that weaned a fawn. No statistical associations were detected for T. gondii seropositivity and reproductive losses. The pregnancy rate was not affected by N. caninum or T. gondii infection, while the serological evidence of N. caninum causing postnatal mortality was marginal. Based on serological evidence, N. caninum would be a potential abortigenic agent in red deer hinds.

RESUMEN

Determining if reproductive failures in ewes at the semiarid region in the state of Bahia are related to the consumption of the species Cenostigma pyramidale (Tul.) Gagnon & G.P. Lewis, and this study was developed using pregnant ewes divided into six groups: G1, G2, G3, G4 with six animals each, G5 and G6 with ten animals. Each group received fence leaves in the proportion of 1%, 2%, 0.5%, and 0.25% of live weight (LW) respectively; G5 and G6, with ten animals each, receiving 0.25% and 0.5% of the LW, respectively, and the Control Group, comprising 16 ewes, were grass feeding (Cynodon dactylon). Ewes from G1 to G4 were the same, except for two, and started ingestion of the plant four days after ending of natural mating on the 80th day of gestation, while those regarding from G5 to G6 groups started ingestion on the 26th day of gestation ending on the 98 day. The ultrasonographic test was performed weekly. In G1 ewes (1%), there was an embryonic loss on the 32nd and 39th days of gestation and abortion on the 46th day. In G2 (2%), the embryo loss was earlier (on the 26th day of gestation), and abortion on the 46th day of gestation. In G3 group (0.5%), there was an embryonic loss around the 40th day of gestation. In G4 group (0.25%), it was observed the occurrence of one death lamb with bone malformations. In G6 (0.5%), abortion occurred later (108 days), followed by retained placenta. This was also verified in G5 group (0.25%). The presence of fetal malformation was found in death lambs born in G4 group, born alive from G5 and G6 groups, and one aborted from G6. In G5 and G6 groups, there were also genetic alterations on surviving lambs. In addition to these results, recurrent estrus was observed without gestation in G1, G2, G3, and G4 ewes. From the Control Group, 13 normal lambs were born without genetic alterations; furthermore, concerning a quadruple birth, three lambs were born dead. The results infer that species of C. pyramidale in low doses causes reproductive losses in pregnant ewes, therefore it is not recommended for sheep diet over the first 60 days of gestation.(AU)

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe for the first time a natural case of ovine abortion associated with Neospora caninum in a flock with reproductive losses in Argentina. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The analyzed flock consisted of 256 Texel sheep, of which 134 had been mated. A single blood sample was obtained by jugular vein puncture from 220 ewes (116 adult ewes, 104 yearling ewes) and 93 lambs. Serum samples and fetal fluid were tested using the indirect fluorescence antibody test to detect antibodies against N. caninum and T. gondii. Fetal and placental tissues from aborted fetus were examined by standard gross pathology procedures and were tested using histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Moreover, DNA from fetal and placental tissues was isolated and a PCR assay to detect N. caninum, T. gondii and Chlamydia spp. was used. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The pregnancy rate was 89% (119/134), the abortion rate was 8.4% (10/119) whereas the perinatal mortality rate was 15% (16/109). Out of 116 adult ewes sampled, 34.48% presented anti-N. caninum antibodies. Ten ewes had aborted, and one fetus was directly submitted to the diagnostic laboratory for further processing. Antibodies against N. caninum were detected in fetal fluid and in the aborted dam. Histopathological analysis in fetal tissues showed multifocal lymphohistiocytic glossitis, diffuse mild lymphohistiocytic endocarditis, pericarditis and focally extensive myocarditis. Severe multifocal necrotizing placentitis and diffuse mild lymphohistiocytic placentitis with the presence of lymphohistiocytic vasculitis were observed in placenta. N. caninum was immunolabeled in the placenta and fetal tongue. In addition, N. caninum DNA was detected in placenta, central neural system, lung and heart of the aborted fetus. There was no evidence of other infectious abortifacients in the aborted fetus. CONCLUSION: The present study described for the first time an ovine abortion caused by N. caninum in Argentina. Further investigations at a larger scale are required to establish the role of N. caninum as an important cause of reproductive losses in sheep flocks from the region.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the leaves of the tree Poincianella pyramidalis (Tul.) L.P. Queiroz as a spontaneous cause of abortion, malformation and reproductive failure in goat herds in the Brazilian semiarid region. Epidemiological investigations, clinical evaluation of goats affected by malformation and necropsy of aborted fetuses was carried out on 12 farms located in the municipalities of Gurjão and Soledade, state of Paraíba, and on a farm located at the municipality of Pau dos Ferros, state of Rio Grande do Norte. The study considered only the farms where occurred predominantly P. pyramidalis among teratogenic plants. On the farm located in the municipality of Pau dos Ferros the occurrence of frequent abortion and birth of malformed goats, affecting 90% of pregnant goats, was observed. On the 12 farms belonging to the municipalities of Gurjão and Soledade, spontaneous cases of embryonic mortality, abortion and malformation occurred in 257 goats (41.1% of goats). Arthrogryposis was the main congenital malformation observed. Necropsy and histopathological exams of four fetuses and their placentas did not detect the presence of infectious agents. The cases of embryonic mortality, abortion and malformation were predominantly concentrated during the seasons of the year when pasture was scarce, but P. pyramidalis was available, due to the occurrence of pre-seasonal rains, which did not allow the pasture to germinate but P. pyramidalis to regrowth. The findings of this study confirm that this plant significantly interferes in the reproductive efficiency of semi-arid goat herds.(AU)

RESUMEN

The aim of this study is to report an episode of reproductive losses due to toxoplasmosis in a sheep flock in Argentina. A total of 15 abortions and 9 stillbirths were recorded in a flock of 190 Texel ewes. The affected ewes were more likely to be seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii (15/24) than ewes that delivered normal lambs (5/34, OR=9.6, 95%CI=2.7-34.0, p=0.0004). A pair of aborted twins was recovered for diagnostic investigation. One of these fetuses and its dam were seropositive for T. gondii. Histological examination of the two fetuses revealed non-suppurative myocarditis and epicarditis, portal hepatitis and multifocal necrotizing encephalitis with protozoal cysts in the brain. T. gondii was detected intralesionally by immunohistochemistry in one fetus and by PCR in both. Further investigations are necessary to evaluate the economic losses due to T. gondii in the Argentinean ovine industry.

The aim of this paper is to describe the epidemiological, clinical-pathological and radiological aspects of malformations in small ruminants in the semi-arid state of Bahia. Technical visits were carried out in 41 rural properties in the city of Uauá, Bahia, and in each of them, an epidemiological questionnaire was applied. In addition, when malformations were observed, the animals were evaluated alive or dead. Eight animals (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8) were necropsied, and two (7 and 8) were submitted to radiographic examination. Regarding the feeding of the herd, 40 (97.56%) farmers reported the free access of their animals to the native vegetation. Regarding the presence of Mimosa tenuiflora, 5 (12.2%) said that the animals had access to the plant, 15 (36.6%) was informed they had little contact, while 21 (51.2%) reported that there was no contact with the plant, because this species were not present in a relevant number in the region. Twenty five out of 41 owners (60.98%) reported the consumption of Poincianella pyramidalis. It was also verified that in the majority of the properties there were many areas invaded by P. pyramidalis (80-90% of the vegetation). The main abnormalities reported by the interviewees on 36 properties were arthrogryposis (87.80%), agnatia [22 (53.66%)], lateral deviation of the mandible [11 (26.82%)], scoliosis [6 (14.63%)], micrognathia [6 (14.63%)], cleft palate [4 (9.75%)], skull enlarged in size [4 (9.75%)], microphthalmia [2 (4.88%)], braquignatism [1 (2.43%)], exophthalmia [1 (2.43%)] and, multiple deformities in the skull [1 (2.43%)]. In the clinical examination of 13 animals with malformations, the main alterations were bilateral arthrogryposis of the thoracic limbs (6/13); cleft lip (2/13); micrognathia (1/13) and dental malocclusion (1/13). Considering that some of these malformations were reproduced experimentally in goats, it is possible to suggest P. pyramidalis as another teratogenic plant for ruminants in Northeast Brazil.(AU)

RESUMEN

In a review article based on the published literature and their own research, the authors examine the role of a man in recurrent miscarriage and reproductive losses in a spouse. Detailed description is presented of the negative impact of elevated levels of sperm DNA fragmentation on the course of pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, on the occurrence of recurrent miscarriage or missed abortion, on the effectiveness of assisted reproductive technology (ART) programs. The etiology and pathogenesis of damage to sperm DNA are described. Outlined are positive effects of correcting adverse lifestyle factors, the role of varicocelectomy and antioxidant therapy, and advances in ART. The review specifies the role of different male karyotype abnormalities (translocations) in the pathogenesis of pregnancy loss. The implications of urologic surgery, preimplantation genetic diagnosis in solving this problem are discussed. New treatment strategies using correction of male disorders for couples with recurrent miscarriage are offered.

The effects of different FTAI protocols were compared to the natural mating of bulls on the reproductive performance of 249 Aberdeen Angus cows. Five groups were formed: Control (n=50); Crestar 2nd use (n=64); OvSynch (n=65); Primer 1st use (n=35) and Primer 2nd use (n=35). The FTAI of the animals in the Crestar 2nd use, OvSynch and Primer 1st use groups was accomplished 27 days after the beginning of the mating season for the control group and the FTAI in the Primer 2nd use group happened 38 days after the beginning of the mating season of the control group. From seven days after the FTAI cows were exposed to bulls until the end of the mating season. The mating season was of 91 days for the control group, 64 days for the Crestar 2nd use, OvSynch and Primer 1st use groups and 53 days for the Primer 2nd use group. The pregnancy rate at the end of the mating season didn't differ among the groups (P>0.05), being 85.9; 83.1; 82.9; 88.6 and 80.0% respectively, for Crestar 2nd use, OvSynch, Primer 1st use, Primer 2nd use and Control. The birth rate resulting from FTAI was 23.4; 29.2; 48.6 and 62.9% for the Crestar 2nd use, OvSynch, Primer 1st use, Primer 2nd use groups, with significant difference (P<0.05) among Crestar and Primer 1st and 2nd use. OvSynch didn't differ in Crestar and Primer 1st use. Primer 1st use didn't differ from Primer 2nd use. The average reproductive losses between the gestation diagnosis and the birth were10.5%. The estimated calving interval (CI) didn't present differences among the animal groups, with an average of 478 days. The body condition score (BCS) of pregnant cows at the end of the reproductive station differed from BCS of empty cows in the control group, but it didn't differ in the other groups, possibly due to the hormonal treatment influence in inducing the oestrus and ovulation in animals with lower BCS. The delay of the accomplishment of FTAI after 27 or 38 days of the beginning of the mating season didn't affect the final pregnancy rate and CI of the cows, when compared to natural mating.

A survey to investigate the possible association between the occurrence of abortion and seroprevalence of bovine brucellosis in theState of Espírito Santo, Southeast region of Brazil, was carried out. A total of 5,201 sera from cows 24 months-old from 571 herds, drawn in two regions of the state (region 1, north of the state, region 2, south of the state), were analyzed. For serological diagnosisof bovine brucellosis the Rose Bengal Test (RBT) was applied as a screening test and the 2-mercaptoethanol test as a confirmatorytest. A herd was considered focus when presented at least one seropositive animal. In both regions and in the State, prevalence ofbrucellosis was significantly higher in herds that have reported the occurrence of abortions and in animals with a history of abortions(P < 0.05), indicating that Brucella abortus may be an important cause of abortions in the State of Espírito Santo
