RESUMEN

Metallo-ß-lactamases (MßLs) hydrolyze and inactivate ß-lactam antibiotics, are a pivotal mechanism conferring resistance against bacterial infections. SMB-1, a novel B3 subclass of MßLs from Serratia marcescens could deactivate almost all ß-lactam antibiotics including ampicillin (AMP), which has posed a serious threat to public health. To illuminate the mechanism of recognition and interaction between SMB-1 and AMP, various fluorescence spectroscopy techniques and molecular dynamics simulation were employed. The results of quenching spectroscopy unraveled that AMP could make SMB-1 fluorescence quenching that mechanism was the static quenching; the synchronous and three-dimensional fluorescence spectra validated that the microenvironment and conformation of SMB-1 were altered after interaction with AMP. The molecular dynamics results demonstrated that the whole AMP enters the binding pocket of SMB-1, even though with a relatively bulky R1 side chain. Loop1 and loop2 in SMB-1 undergo significant fluctuations, and α2 (71-73) and local α5 (186-188) were turned into random coils, promoting zinc ion exposure consistent with circular dichroism spectroscopy results. The binding between them was driven by a combination of enthalpy and entropy changes, which was dominated by electrostatic force in agreement with the fluorescence observations. The present study brings structural insights and solid foundations for the design of new substrates for ß-lactamases and the development of effective antibiotics that are resistant to superbugs.

Simulated moving bed (SMB) technology is considered one of the most successful techniques in chromatographic separation. However, due to the nonlinearity caused by discrete events and sensitivity to numerous separation performance parameters, purity control in SMB systems has been a challenging issue. Fuzzy controllers are increasingly popular in industrial environments due to their simplicity and effectiveness in handling nonlinearity. However, traditional fuzzy controllers used in industry often overlook considerations of error acceleration, resulting in slight deviations from target values under steady-state conditions and oscillatory behavior when system parameters change. This study proposes an advanced fuzzy controller, where in a series of experiments, the purity control targets for component B are set at 94% and 96%, and for component A are set at 96% and 96%, respectively. Experimental results indicate that the advanced fuzzy controller achieves higher precision, with an average deviation of around 0.1%, for both components B and A. Importantly, under variations in adsorbent parameter(from 0.01 to 0.03), feed concentration(from 4.5 to 5.2), and switching time(from 178 to 182), the experimental results demonstrate smoother control with the advanced controller, particularly when oscillations occur with conventional fuzzy controllers due to switching time variations, indicating robust control with the advanced fuzzy controller.

Although gene splicing occurs throughout the body, the phenotype of spliceosomal defects is largely limited to specific tissues. Cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome (CCMS) is one such spliceosomal disease, which presents as congenital skeletal dysmorphism and is caused by mutations of SNRPB gene encoding Small Nuclear Ribonucleoprotein Polypeptides B/B' (SmB/B'). This study employed in vitro cell cultures to monitor osteo- and chondro-differentiation and examined the role of SmB/B' in the differentiation process. We found that low levels of SmB/B' by knockdown or mutations of SNRPB led to suppressed osteodifferentiation in Saos-2 osteoprogenitor-like cells, which was accompanied by affected splicing of Dlx5. On the other hand, low SmB/B' led to promoted chondrogenesis in HEPM mesenchymal stem cells. Consistent with other reports, osteogenesis was promoted by the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway activator and suppressed by Wnt and BMP blockers, whereas chondrogenesis was promoted by Wnt inhibitors. Suppressed osteogenic markers by SNRPB knockdown were partly rescued by Wnt/ß-catenin pathway activation. Reporter analysis revealed that suppression of SNRPB results in attenuated Wnt pathway and/or enhanced BMP pathway activities. SNRPB knockdown altered splicing of TCF7L2 which impacts Wnt/ß-catenin pathway activities. This work helps unravel the mechanism underlying CCMS whereby reduced expression of spliceosomal proteins causes skeletal phenotypes.

More than 600 mutations have been discovered in the history of silkworm domestication. It is important to study the formation mechanism of these mutations to further understand the life and development process of silkworms and agricultural pest control. The silkworm mutant smb was isolated from silkworm strain NCV, and transcriptome analysis was performed on the silkworm mutant. 796 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected at 48 h of the second instar stage with 669 genes significantly upregulated and 127 genes significantly downregulated. During the GO enrichment analysis, it was found that the enrichment of biological processes was mainly concentrated in proteolysis, carbohydrate metabolism, aminoglycan metabolism, organic substance metabolism, protein metabolism and so on. Based on the analysis of KEGG pathways, it revealed that the pathways enriched in lysosomes, AMPK signaling, fatty acid metabolism, PPAR signaling, galactose metabolism, and protein digestion and absorption were the most significant. Through these most significantly enriched GO terms and KEGG pathways, DEGs consistent with the phenotypic characteristics of the smb mutant were identified, including small body size, slow development, and successive death after the fourth instar. These results provided experimental evidence for the potential formation mechanism of smb mutants.

Metallo-ß-lactamases (MßLs) are the primary mechanism of resistance to carbapenem antibiotics. To elucidate how MßLs have evolved with the introduction and use of antibiotics, the mutation and evolution of SMB-1 from Serratia marcescens were investigated in microbial evolution plates containing discontinuous meropenem (MEM) concentration gradients. The results revealed 2-point mutations, A242G and S257R; 1 double-site mutation, C240G/E258G; and 3 frameshift mutations, M5, M12, and M13, which are all missense mutations situated at the C-terminus. Compared with that of the wild-type (WT), the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of MEM for A242G, C240G/E258G, M5, M12, and M13 increased at least 120-fold, and that of S257R increased 8-fold. The catalytic efficiency kcat/Km increased by 365% and 647%, respectively. Concerning the structural changes, the structure at the active site changed from an ordered structure to an unordered conformation. Simultaneously, the flexibility of loop 1 was enhanced. These changes increased the volume of the active site cavity; thus, this was more conducive to exposing the Zn2+ site, facilitating substrate binding and conversion to products. In A242G, structural changes in Gly-242 can be transmitted to the active region via a network of interactions between the side chains of Gly-242 and the amino acid side chains near the active pocket. Together, these results pointed to the process of persistent drug tolerance and resistance, the SMB-1 enzyme evolved into a more exquisite structure with increased flexibility and stability, and stronger hydrolysis activity via genetic mutations and structural changes.

BACKGROUND: Although splicing is an integral part of the expression of many genes in our body, genetic syndromes with spliceosomal defects affect only specific tissues. To help understand the mechanism, we investigated the expression pattern of a core protein of the major spliceosome, SmB/B' (Small Nuclear Ribonucleoprotein Polypeptides B/B'), which is encoded by SNRPB. Loss-of-function mutations of SNRPB in humans cause cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome (CCMS) characterized by rib gaps, micrognathia, cleft palate, and scoliosis. Our expression analysis focused on the affected structures as well as non-affected tissues, using chick and mouse embryos as model animals. RESULTS: Embryos at young stages (gastrula) showed ubiquitous expression of SmB/B'. However, the level and pattern of expression became tissue-specific as differentiation proceeded. The regions relating to CCMS phenotypes such as cartilages of ribs and vertebrae and palatal mesenchyme express SmB/B' in the nucleus sporadically. However, cartilages that are not affected in CCMS also showed similar expressions. Another spliceosomal gene, SNRNP200, which mutations cause retinitis pigmentosa, was also prominently expressed in cartilages in addition to the retina. CONCLUSION: The expression of SmB/B' is spatiotemporally regulated during embryogenesis despite the ubiquitous requirement of the spliceosome, however, the expression pattern is not strictly correlated with the phenotype presentation.

Probiotic attributes of lactic acid bacteria isolated from goat and sheep milk samples were analysed by culturing them on an MRS agar medium. The most potential isolates, GMB24 and SMB16, were identified by biochemical tests which had ability to tolerate different concentrations of acid and bile and phenol resistance. They were further identified as Enterococcus faecium GMB24 and Enterococcus hirae SMB16 by 16S rRNA gene sequencing approach. The probiotic potential of the isolates GMB24 and SMB16 were recorded including antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria viz., Escherichia coli (MTCC118), Staphylococcus aureus (MTCC7443), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC424), Listeria monocytogens (MTCC657) and Salmonella typhimurium (MTCC733), and antibiotic susceptibility test. The isolates SMB16 and GMB24 exhibited a higher zone of inhibition against P. aeruginosa (19.00 ± 0.57 mm) and S. aureus (25.66 ± 0.88 mm), respectively. The data from these experiments were used for the principal component analysis (PCA) to assess the survivability of the isolates under different factors. The heatmap generated in this study clustered the bacterial isolates based on their phenotype properties. Further, immunomodulating activities of these probiotic bacteria were tested on neutrophil adhesion test, haemagglutinating antibody titer and delayed-type hypersensitivity. Probiotic E. faecium GMB24 and E. hirae SMB16, at 109 cells/mL doses per day, increased the neutrophil adhesion, haemagglutinating antibody titer and DTH in comparison to the untreated control group. The isolates showed negative test for haemolytic and gelatinase activities and hence were considered safe. E. faecium GMB24 and E. hirae SMB16 were shown to have high probiotic potential and immune-stimulant action.

The interest in the simulated moving bed (SMB) technology lies in its variants. Some of them that have a high potential to increase the performance in enantioseparations are the ModiCon and the ModiCon+VariCol. These variants are based on the modulation of feed concentration and a combination of feed concentration and length of zones modulations. The concept of the ModiCon process in the literature is that it can be applied only for systems described by nonlinear isotherms. However, there are no numerical or experimental studies that prove that. On the other hand, the hybrid operation of ModiCon+VariCol can be used in systems with a low number of columns due to the flexibility in the use of columns, but it has been little explored. In this work, the maximal performance of the ModiCon process was compared with the SMB process for a linear isotherm. Additionally, the ModiCon+VariCol process was evaluated in systems with a low number of columns. The enantioseparation of guaifenesin was considered as a case study. The result shows that the ModiCon process can also be applied with high performance in systems described by linear isotherms. In the evaluation of the ModiCon+VariCol process for unequal product purity, it was found that the hybrid operation with 3 columns showed a higher throughput and productivity than the SMB process with 6 columns. The productivity of the ModiCon+VariCol was more than three times higher than the conventional operation.

BACKGROUND: Dry powder (DP) synthetic lung surfactant may be an effective means of noninvasive delivery of surfactant therapy to premature infants supported with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) in low-resource settings. METHODS: Four experimental DP surfactant formulations consisting of 70% of phospholipids (DPPC:POPG 7:3), 3% Super Mini-B (SMB) or its sulfur-free derivate B-YL as SP-B peptide mimic, 25% of lactose or trehalose as excipient, and 2% of NaCl were formulated using spray drying. In vitro surface activity was confirmed with captive bubble surfactometry. Surfactant particle size was determined with a cascade impactor and inhaled dose was quantified using a spontaneously breathing premature lamb lung model supported with CPAP. In vivo surfactant efficacy was demonstrated in three studies. First, oxygenation and lung compliance were monitored after intratracheal instillation of resuspended DP surfactant in intubated, ventilated, lavaged, surfactant-deficient juvenile rabbits. In dose-response studies, ventilated, lavaged, surfactant-deficient rabbits received 30, 60, 120 or 240 mg/kg of DP B-YL:Lactose or B-YL:Trehalose surfactant by aerosol delivery with a low flow aerosol chamber via their endotracheal tube. Noninvasive aerosolization of DP B-YL:Trehalose surfactant via nasal prongs was tested in spontaneous breathing premature lambs supported with nCPAP. Intratracheal administration of 200 mg/kg of Curosurf®, a liquid porcine surfactant, was used as a positive control. RESULTS: Mass median aerosol diameter was 3.6 µm with a geometric standard deviation of 1.8. All four experimental surfactants demonstrated high surface efficacy of intratracheal instillation of a bolus of ~ 100 mg/kg of surfactant with improvement of oxygenation and lung compliance. In the dose-response studies, rabbits received incremental doses of DP B-YL:Lactose or B-YL:Trehalose surfactant intratracheally and showed an optimal response in oxygenation and lung function at a dose of 120-240 mg/kg. Aerosol delivery via nasal prongs of 1 or 2 doses of ~ 100 mg/kg of B-YL:Trehalose surfactant to premature lambs supported with nCPAP resulted in stabilization of spontaneous breathing and oxygenation and lung volumes comparable to the positive control. CONCLUSION: These studies confirm the clinical potential of DP synthetic lung surfactant with B-YL peptide as a SP-B mimic to alleviate surfactant deficiency when delivered as a liquid bolus or as an aerosol.

Prion diseases are kinds of fatal neurodegenerative diseases without effective therapeutic and prophylactic tools currently. In this study, the inhibition of PrPSc propagation and cellular protectivity of 3,4-dihydroxybenzalacetone (DBL), a small catechol-containing compound isolated and purified from the ethanol extract of Inonotus obliquus, upon a prion-infected cell line SMB-S15 were evaluated. Western blots showed that after incubation with 10 µM of DBL for 14 days, the level of PrPSc in SMB-S15 cells was significantly decreased. Meanwhile, the levels of ROS and hydrogen peroxide were decreased with a dose-dependent manner, whereas the levels of some antioxidant factors, such as HO-1, GCLC and GCLM, were significantly increased. The activities of total glutathione and SOD were up-regulated. DBL-treated SMB-S15 cells also showed the up-regulation of UPR-related proteins, including PERK, IRE1α, ATF6 and GRP78, and activation of autophagy system. Furthermore, the SIRT3 abnormalities caused by prion infection were relieved by DBL treatment. On the contrary, these comprehensive changes were not significantly noticed in the normal partner cell line SMB-PS under the same experimental condition. Those data indicate that treatment of DBL on prion-infected cells can reduce PrPSc level, activate UPR and autophagy system and meanwhile relieve intracellular oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress and mitochondrial dysfunction by raising the levels of multiple antioxidant factors. The PrPSc inhibition and protective effectiveness of DBL upon the prion-infected cells in vitro make it worthy of further study.

Studies have reported that physical exercise reduces maladaptive stereotyped motor behaviours (SMB) in children with ASD, but these intervention studies vary in design and outcome. The present systematic review and meta-analysis included 22 studies, involving 274 children with ASD, to quantify the effect of exercise on SMB and its potential moderators. Multi-level modelling revealed a large overall effect, Hedges' g = 1.16, with significant heterogeneity across participant, treatment, and study levels. Further, a more appropriate model using between-case estimation for within-subject effects to improve comparability between single-case and group-design studies, yielded a smaller but still significant effect, g = 0.51. Lastly, higher exercise intensity, but not age, exercise duration or settings, reliably predicted treatment effectiveness. Implications for clinical practice and research are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Airway smooth muscle remodelling in severe equine asthma includes both thickening of airway smooth muscle, resulting from hyperplasia and hypertrophy, and changes in contractility. However, airway smooth muscle changes have not been studied in milder forms of the disease. OBJECTIVES: To investigate bronchial smooth muscle remodelling in horses with mild and moderate asthma (MEA). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case-control study. METHODS: The endobronchial biopsies from 18 horses with MEA referred to the Equine Hospital of the Université de Montréal and from seven healthy age-matched control horses were studied. The diagnosis was based on clinical signs and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid cytology. Airway smooth muscle cell proliferation was measured by quantifying the expression of the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) using immunohistochemistry and histomorphometry. The expression of the (+)insert smooth muscle myosin heavy chain (SMMHC) isoform, an hypercontractile protein, was assessed by RT-qPCR. RESULTS: Expression of the (+)insert SMMHC isoform in airway smooth muscle was approximately 1.5 times greater in horses with MEA compared with controls (P = .02, mean difference 0.01). Although there were no differences between groups in the proliferation of airway smooth muscle cells (P = .4) or myocyte density (P = .3, mean difference -0.6), the percentage of proliferating myocytes was correlated to pulmonary neutrophilia in horses with neutrophilic inflammation (P = .01, r = .80) and to the expression of the (+)insert SMMHC isoform in asthmatic horses (P = .03, r = .66). MAIN LIMITATIONS: Small cohorts of horses were studied, and conclusions are limited to the central airways. CONCLUSIONS: These results confirm the presence of bronchial smooth muscle remodelling in mild forms of equine asthma and pave the way for the development of biomarkers to measure asthma progression and response to therapy.

Electron-electron interactions can be useful for realizing new nontrivial topological phases of matter. Here, we show by means of a tight-binding model and mean field theory how electron-electron interactions can lead to a topological phase transition. By externally adding or removing electrons from the system a band inversion between two bands with different parity is induced. This leads to a topological nontrivial phase if spin-orbit coupling is present. Besides the toy-model illustrating this mechanism, we also propose SmB6as a possible playground for experimentally realizing a topological phase transition by external tuning.

Woody cells generate lignocellulosic biomass, which is a promising sustainable bioresource for wide industrial applications. Woody cell differentiation in vascular plants, including the model plant poplar (Populus trichocarpa), is regulated by a set of NAC family transcription factors, the VASCULAR-RELATED NAC-DOMAIN (VND), NAC SECONDARY CELL WALL THICKENING PROMOTING FACTOR (NST)/SND, and SOMBRERO (SMB) (VNS)-related proteins, but the precise contributions of each VNS protein to wood quality are unknown. Here, we performed a detailed functional analysis of the poplar SMB-type VNS proteins PtVNS13-PtVNS16. PtVNS13-PtVNS16 were preferentially expressed in the roots of young poplar plantlets, similar to the Arabidopsis thalianaSMB gene. PtVNS13 and PtVNS14, as well as the NST-type PtVNS11, suppressed the abnormal root cap phenotype of the Arabidopsis sombrero-3 mutant, whereas the VND-type PtVNS07 gene did not, suggesting a functional gap between SMB- or NST-type VNS proteins and VND-type VNS proteins. Overexpressing PtVNS13-PtVNS16 in Arabidopsis seedlings and poplar leaves induced ectopic xylem-vessel-like cells with secondary wall deposition, and a transient expression assay showed that PtVNS13-16 transactivated woody-cell-related genes. Interestingly, although any VNS protein rescued the pendant stem phenotype of the Arabidopsis nst1-1 nst3-1 mutant, the resulting inflorescence stems exhibited distinct cell wall properties: poplar VNS genes generated woody cell walls with higher enzymatic saccharification efficiencies compared with Arabidopsis VNS genes. Together, our data reveal clear functional diversity among VNS proteins in woody cell differentiation and demonstrate a novel VNS-based strategy for modifying woody cell wall properties toward enhanced utilization of woody biomass.

(Tl2O3)30-(Li2O)10-(B2O3)(60-y)-(Sm2O3)y glass system with various Sm2O3 additives (y = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6) was studied in detail. The vibrational modes of the (Tl2O3)30-(Li2O)10-(B2O3)(60-y) network were active at three composition-related IR spectral peaks that differed from those mixed with Samarium (III) oxide at high wavenumber ranges. These glass samples show that their permeability increased with the Samarium (III) oxide content increase. Additionally, the electronic transition between localized states was observed in the samples. The MAC, HVL, and Zeff values for radiation shielding parameters were calculated in the energy range of 0.015-15 MeV using the FLUKA algorithm. In addition, EBF, EABF, and ΣR values were also determined for the prepared glasses. These values indicated that the parameters for shielding (MAC, HVL, Zeff, EBF, EABF, and ΣR) are dependent upon the Samarium (III) oxide content. Furthermore, the addition of Samarium (III) oxide to the examined glass samples greatly reinforced their shielding capacity against gamma photon. The findings of the current study were compared to analyses of the XCOM software, some concretes, and lead. In the experiment, it was found that the SMG0.6 glass sample was the strongest shield.

The VariCol and ModiCon processes are two variants of the simulated moving bed (SMB) process, characterized by the modulation of the length of zones of the chromatographic column train and the feed concentration. These features give more flexibility than the conventional operation, leading to essential improvements in the separation and purification of mixtures. The optimal performance comparison of these two variants, the hybrid formed by their combination, and the conventional SMB process are scarce in the literature. This comparison helps discover new characteristics of each single and combined operation mode and creates guidelines to select the appropriate operation mode for possible real applications. In this work, the performance comparison of the ModiCon, VariCol, ModiCon+VariCol, and SMB processes is carried out in terms of maximal throughput for specific product purity values. Particular emphasis is placed on both the ModiCon and the hybrid ModiCon+VariCol processes characteristics. A strategy for combining and optimizing the ModiCon and the VariCol processes was determined. As a case study, the enantioseparation of guaifenesin was considered. In the ModiCon process, more than two modulation subintervals did not improve the performance in the separation. The optimal pattern, based on two subintervals, has zero feed concentration in the first subinterval and the maximal concentration in the second one. The best result for the hybrid operation (ModiCon+VariCol) was reached when the feed port moves simultaneously as the SMB process switching period. The optimal throughput of the ModiCon and the ModiCon+VariCol processes was almost doubled than that of the SMB process. These performances were based on larger zones I and II and not in zones II and III as occur with the SMB and VariCol process. The throughput in the hybrid operation increases more significantly than the ModiCon process when 5 columns were considered instead of 6. The hybrid operation could be more attractive for a system with a few numbers of columns.

Lantibiotics are a type of bacteriocin produced by Gram-positive bacteria and have a wide spectrum of Gram-positive antimicrobial activity. In this study, we determined that Mutacin I/III and Smb (a dipeptide lantibiotic), which are mainly produced by the widespread cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans, have strong antimicrobial activities against many of the Gram-positive bacteria which constitute the intestinal microbiota. These lantibiotics also demonstrate resistance to acid and temperature. Based on these features, we predicted that lantibiotics may be able to persist into the intestinal tract maintaining a strong antimicrobial activity, affecting the intestinal microbiota. Saliva and fecal samples from 69 subjects were collected to test this hypothesis and the presence of lantibiotics and the composition of the intestinal microbiota were examined. We demonstrate that subjects possessing lantibiotic-producing bacteria in their oral cavity exhibited a tendency of decreased species richness and have significantly reduced abundance of the phylum Firmicutes in their intestinal microbiota. Similar results were obtained in the fecal microbiota of mice fed with S. mutans culture supernatant containing the lantibiotic bacteriocin Mutacin I. These results showed that lantibiotic bacteriocins produced in the oral cavity perturb the intestinal microbiota and suggest that oral bacteria may be one of the causative factors of intestinal microbiota dysbiosis.

ß-adrenergic antagonists (ß-blockers) with at least one chiral center are an exceedingly important class of drugs used mostly to treat cardiovascular diseases. At least 70 ß-blockers have been investigated in history. However, only a few ß-blockers, e.g., timolol, are clinically marketed as an optically pure enantiomer. Therefore, the separation of racemates of ß-blockers is essential both in the laboratory and industry. Many approaches have been explored to obtain the single enantiomeric ß-blocker, including high performance liquid chromatography, supercritical fluid chromatography and simulated moving bed chromatography. In this article, a review is presented on different chromatographic methods applied for the enantioseparation of ß-blockers, covering high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) and simulated moving bed chromatography (SMB).

The VariCol process is a variant of the conventional simulated moving bed (SMB) process, distinguished by the asynchronous shifting of the inlet and outlet ports of the chromatographic column train. This feature allows for a more flexible operation in column utilization and can also achieve higher separation performances. However, to take full benefit out of it, the operating parameters, such as the strategy for port switching, must be optimal. in this paper, a novel methodology for optimizing those parameters, based on a single NLP (non-linear programming), is proposed. The main advantage of this approach is that it significantly reduces the complexity of the original MINLP (mixed-integer non-linear programming) formulation currently discussed in the literature. The proposed optimization problem is built, considering that the average column configuration of three zones provides the necessary and sufficient information to describe the VariCol process. Several optimization scenarios for the enantioseparation of 1,1´-bi-2-naphthol and aminoglutethimide were considered to evaluate the proposed methodology and to compare the performance of VariCol and SMB processes. The results have shown that with the single NLP approach, it is possible to explore the optimal solution in all the VariCol process domains with less computational effort than other optimization strategies reported in the literature. That is a great advantage, especially in the context of real-time applications.

The proximity of two different materials leads to an intricate coupling of quasiparticles so that an unprecedented electronic state is often realized at the interface. Here, we demonstrate a resonance-type many-body ground state in graphene, a nonmagnetic two-dimensional Dirac semimetal, when grown on SmB6, a Kondo insulator, via thermal decomposition of fullerene molecules. This ground state is typically observed in three-dimensional magnetic materials with correlated electrons. Above the characteristic Kondo temperature of the substrate, the electron band structure of pristine graphene remains almost intact. As temperature decreases, however, the Dirac Fermions of graphene become hybridized with the Sm 4f states. Remarkable enhancement of the hybridization and Kondo resonance is observed with further cooling and increasing charge-carrier density of graphene, evidencing the Kondo screening of the Sm 4f local magnetic moment by the conduction electrons of graphene at the interface. These findings manifest the realization of the Kondo effect in graphene by the proximity of SmB6 that is tuned by the temperature and charge-carrier density of graphene.
