OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of oral exposure to iron oxide nanoparticles(Fe_2O_3NPs) on the reproductive system of male rats. METHODS: Forty male SD rats were randomly divided into control group and low, medium, high dose groups, 10 rats in each group, normal saline and 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg Fe_2O_3NPs suspension were given by gavage, respectively. The volume of gavage was 10 mL/kg for 28 days. The body weight was weighed every three days, and the body weight changes of rats were recorded. After intraperitoneal anesthesia with 10% chloral hydrate, the rats were sacrificed by cervical dislocation, and the testis and epididymis were collected. Weigh and calculate the testicular coefficient and epididymal coefficient, the pathological sections of rat testis were observed by hematoxylin-eosin staining, the number of epididymal sperm was counted under an optical microscope and the sperm deformity rate was calculated. The activities of acid phosphatase(ACP), alkaline phosphatase(AKP), lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase(γ-GT), the activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD), and the contents of glutathione(GSH) and malondialdehyde(MDA) in rat testis homogenate were detected by kit method. RESULTS: Compared with control group, there was no significant difference in body weight, testicular coefficient and epididymal coefficient in each dose group. In the medium and high dose groups, the arrangement of spermatogenic epithelium was disordered and spermatogenic cells decreased. The number of sperm in high dose group was decreased, and the sperm deformity rate in medium and high dose groups was increased(P<0.01). The activity of ACP in medium and high dose groups increased(P<0.05), and the activity of γ-GT decreased(P<0.01). There was no significant change in the activity of AKP and LDH in testicular homogenate of rats in each group(P>0.05). The level of GSH in medium dose group was increased(P<0.05), and the content of MDA in medium and high dose groups was increased(P<0.01). There was no significant difference in SOD activity among the groups(P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Under the conditions of this experiment, Fe_2O_3NPs can cause damage to the structure of rat testicular tissue, reduce the number of sperm, increase the rate of sperm deformity, interfere with the activity of marker enzymes in testicular tissue and induce oxidative stress injury, which has a negative impact on the reproductive system of male rats.

PURPOSE: In this study, the actor-partner interdependence mediation model (APIMeM) was applied to breast cancer patients and their caregivers to assess the factors that affect the fear of cancer recurrence. In particular, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the mediating effect of social support on financial toxicity and the fear of cancer recurrence, providing an effective basis for developing plans to reduce the level of fear of cancer recurrence. METHODS: This study employed a cross-sectional design, and 405 dyads of breast cancer patients and their caregivers were enrolled. Financial toxicity, social support, and fear of cancer recurrence were assessed by computing comprehensive scores for financial toxicity based on patient-reported outcome measures, the Social Support Rating Scale, and the Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory Short Form, respectively. The data were analysed using SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 23.0. RESULTS: The results showed that the fear of cancer recurrence of breast cancer patients and their caregivers was significantly related to dyadic financial toxicity and social support. In addition, the financial toxicity of breast cancer patients and their caregivers had significant actor effects and partner effects on the fear of cancer recurrence through dyadic social support. CONCLUSIONS: The financial toxicity of breast cancer patients and their caregivers could produce actor and partner effects on the fear of cancer recurrence through the mediation of social support, which provided empirical support for improving reducing the level of fear of cancer recurrence among patients and caregivers at the dyadic level.

We report the case of a 64-year-old female with a history of hypothyroidism and isolated parotid sarcoidosis who presented with acute-onset chest pain and dyspnea. Echocardiogram demonstrated transiently reduced ejection fraction with apical hypokinesis, without evidence of obstructive coronary lesions on angiography, compatible with stress-induced cardiomyopathy. She received a ketamine infusion as a mental health treatment shortly before the development of symptoms, suggesting that this medication may have precipitated her cardiomyopathy. In recent years, ketamine has become a popular option for treating mental health disorders, including major depressive disorder and substance use disorders. It should be used with caution in patients with known cardiovascular disease, and its cardiac effects warrant further study.

PURPOSE: Comprehensive cancer-related financial toxicity (FT) measures as a multidimensional construct are lacking. The aims of this systematic review were to (1) identify full measures designed explicitly for assessing FT and evaluate their psychometric properties (content validity, structural validity, reliability, and other measurement properties) using Consensus-Based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN), and (2) provide an analysis of the domains of FT covered in these measures. METHODS: MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Cochrane CENTRAL were searched for quantitative studies published from January 2000 to July 2023 that reported psychometric properties of FT measures in cancer survivors. The psychometric properties of FT measures and study risk of bias were analysed using COSMIN. Each FT measure was compared against the six domains of FT recommended by Witte and colleagues. Results were synthesized narratively. The detailed search strategies are available in Table S1. RESULTS: Six FT tools including the COST-FACIT, PROFFIT, FIT, SFDQ, HARDS, and ENRICh-Spanish were identified. The COST-FACIT measure had good measurement properties. No measure reached an excellent level for overall quality but was mostly rated as sufficient. The SFDQ, HARDS, and ENRICh-Spanish were the most comprehensive in the inclusion of the six domains of FT. CONCLUSION: This review emphasizes the need for validated multidimensional FT measures that can be applied across various cancer types, healthcare settings, and cultural backgrounds. Furthermore, a need to develop practical screening tools with high predictive ability for FT is highly important, considering the significant consequences of FT. Addressing these gaps in future research will further enhance the understanding of FT.

BACKGROUND: Many older adult patients receive low-dose teicoplanin with varied regimens, leading to a lack of clarity on its optimal regimens and toxicity profiles in China. This study aimed to clarify these aspects by analyzing teicoplanin treatment concentrations and toxicities. METHODS: We included older adult patients administered teicoplanin at four tertiary hospitals in Beijing from June 2021 to July 2023, targeting a trough concentration (Cmin) ≥ 10 mg/L. Teicoplanin concentrations and toxicities were monitored dynamically. RESULTS: From 204 patients, we obtained 632 teicoplanin concentrations. Most patients (83.3%) received low-dose regimens. Suboptimal concentrations were found in 66.4% of patients within 7 days of treatment and 17.0% after 15 days. Cmin gradually increased with treatment duration and was influenced initially by creatinine and by both body weight and creatinine from days 8 to 14. The target concentration was achieved in 53.1%, 33.9%, 15.6%, and 5.5% of patients at 3, ≤ 7, 8-14, and ≥ 15 days after withdrawal, respectively. Slow elimination was associated with average Cmin and eGFR. Nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and thrombocytopenia occurred in 12.5%, 4.1%, and 31.5% of patients, respectively, without significant differences between concentrations. CONCLUSIONS: Most older adult patients were underdosed, indicating a need for dose adjustment. Given the varied risk factors for suboptimal concentrations in different treatment stages, a one-size-fits-all regimen was ineffective. We recommend an initial dose of 400 mg at 12-h intervals for the first three days, with subsequent doses from days 4 to 14 adjusted based on creatinine and body weight; after day 14, a maintenance dose of 200 mg daily is advised. BACKGROUND: Although the correlation between liver toxicity and vancomycin is generally considered low, it has been observed that the use of vancomycin can lead to abnormal liver function indicators, such as elevated aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alpha fetoprotein, and jaundice. To further understand the clinical features associated with vancomycin-induced liver toxicity and to provide clinical guidance, we conducted an analysis of the characteristics and clinical manifestations of vancomycin-induced liver injury. METHODS: Patients with liver function injury who received vancomycin treatment at the Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University and Hunan Maternal and Child Health Hospital between 2016 and 2021 were selected for retrospective analysis of their general characteristics, vancomycin course, dose, liver function index, severity of liver injury, and concomitant medications. RESULTS: Of the 4562 patients who received vancomycin, 17 patients were finally included, with an incidence rate of 0.37%. Of these patients, 12 were male (70.6%) and 5 were female (29.4%), ranging in age from 17 to 84 years with a mean average age of 45.41 ± 20.405 years. All patients were evaluated using Naranjo's score, with score ≥ 3. The dosage, time, and plasma concentration of vancomycin were analyzed and it was found that nine patients (52.94%) had abnormal liver function when initially given a dose of 1 g every 12 hours. In total, 14 patients (82.35%) with liver injury were taking vancomycin in combination with two to four drugs, and severe liver injury occurred in patients taking vancomycin in combination with two drugs. The occurrence time of liver injury was 2-12 days after starting vancomycin, with a mean of 4.53 ± 2.401 days. Of these patients, 16 patients (94.1%) showed liver function abnormalities within 7 days of taking the drug, and 2 patients with grade 3-4 liver injury both showed liver function abnormalities within 3 days of taking the drug. Only 4 of the 17 patients (23.53%) had vancomycin blood concentrations within the normal range, and there was no correlation found between blood concentration and severity of liver injury. Analysis of the correlation between the severity of liver injury and vancomycin showed that none of the patients had allergies such as rash, two patients (11.76%) had jaundice, and fatigue occurred in five patients (29.41%). The remaining ten patients (58.82%) had no symptoms related to liver injury. All 17 patients had abnormal aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase levels and 9 patients also had abnormal bilirubin levels. In 15 patients (88.24%), the severity of liver injury was grade 1, indicating mild liver injury, and no correlation was observed between the severity of liver injury and creatinine. Of the 17 patients, 1 patient received no intervention, 4 patients stopped taking vancomycin after developing liver injury, 1 patient reduced the dose, and 11 patients (64.7%) were treated with hepatic protectant. CONCLUSION: Although the study concluded that the incidence of liver injury was not high, the liver toxicity of vancomycin should still be considered and liver function indicators should be monitored during the clinical use of vancomycin.

To investigate immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) induced pancreatic injury (ICIPI), the prognostic effect of COVID-19 vaccine on cancer patients, and whether COVID-19 vaccine increases the incidence of ICIPI. We conducted a retrospective study of 256 stage IV cancer patients treated with ICIs at The First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University from January 2020 to November 2022. Data collected included pancreatic enzyme levels, treatment outcomes, and vaccination status. Statistical significance was determined using the χ2 test and Kaplan-Meier method (p < .05). Compared to the control group, the vaccinated group (p < .0001) and the group with elevated pancreatic enzyme levels (p = .044) demonstrated higher disease control rates, indicating a direct benefit of vaccination and enzyme monitoring on treatment outcomes. Additionally, vaccinated patients demonstrated longer overall survival versus unvaccinated patients (23.9 months [95% CI, 22.3-25.5] vs 23.6 months [95% CI, 21.1-26.2], HR = 0.45 [95% CI, 0.24-0.86], p = .015) and progression-free survival (17.2 months [95% CI, 14.3-20.1] vs 13.7 months [95% CI, 11.3-16.1], HR = 0.54 [95% CI, 0.36-0.82], p = .004). Importantly, the analysis revealed no significant association between vaccination and pancreatic injury (p = .46). Monitoring pancreatic enzymes can effectively evaluate the therapeutic impact in patients using ICIs. Patients vaccinated against COVID-19 experience better immunotherapy outcomes without an increased risk of ICIPI.

Mulberry (genus Morus) leaves have long been used as a human food, especially in Asia, and animal feed. More recently, mulberry leaf extracts have been introduced as a convenient way to consume mulberry for non-nutritional functional effects. Reducose® 5% is an Morus alba leaf extract that has been highly purified and standardized to a content of 5 ± 0.5% 1-deoxynojirimycin, a naturally present polyhydroxylated piperidine alkaloid analog of D-glucose. This extract has previously been evaluated in acute and subacute (28-day) oral toxicity studies in which no adverse effects of the test item were observed in mice or rats, respectively. Due to continued and growing interest in the extract in multinational markets, we have now further investigated potential toxic effects in subchronic (90-day) oral toxicity study in male and female Han:WIST rats. The test item was administered at doses of 850, 1700, and 2550 mg/kg bw/day, and did not cause adverse effects in clinical signs, body weight development, clinical pathology, gross pathology, or histopathology in comparison to the vehicle-control group. The no-observed-adverse-effect-level was determined to be 2550 mg/kg bw/day. These results add to the existing body of both preclinical and clinical work relevant to the safety of the extract and of interest to regulators in various global markets.

In recent years, semiconductor nanomaterials, as one of the most promising and applied classes of engineered nanomaterials, have been widely used in industries such as photovoltaics, electronic devices, and biomedicine. However, occupational exposure is unavoidable during the production, use, and disposal stages of products containing these materials, thus posing potential health risks to workers. The intricacies of the work environment present challenges in obtaining comprehensive data on such exposure. Consequently, there remains a significant gap in understanding the exposure risks and toxic effects associated with semiconductor nanomaterials. This paper provides an overview of the current classification and applications of typical semiconductor nanomaterials. It also delves into the existing state of occupational exposure, methodologies for exposure assessment, and prevailing occupational exposure limits. Furthermore, relevant epidemiological studies are examined. Subsequently, the review scrutinizes the toxicity of semiconductor nanomaterials concerning target organ toxicity, toxicity mechanisms, and influencing factors. The aim of this review is to lay the groundwork for enhancing the assessment of occupational exposure to semiconductor nanomaterials, optimizing occupational exposure limits, and promoting environmentally sustainable development practices in this domain.

QSAR studies on the number of compounds tested as S. aureus inhibitors were performed using an interactive Online Chemical Database and Modeling Environment (OCHEM) web platform. The predictive ability of the developed consensus QSAR model was q2 = 0.79 ± 0.02. The consensus prediction for the external evaluation set afforded high predictive power (q2 = 0.82 ± 0.03). The models were applied to screen a virtual chemical library with anti-S. aureus activity. Six promising new bicyclic trifluoromethylated pyrroles were identified, synthesized and evaluated in vitro against S. aureus, E. coli, and A. baumannii for their antibacterial activity and against C. albicans, C. krusei and C. glabrata for their antifungal activity. The synthesized compounds were characterized by 1H, 19F, and 13C NMR and elemental analysis. The antimicrobial activity assessment indicated that trifluoromethylated pyrroles 9 and 11 demonstrated the greatest antibacterial and antifungal effects against all the tested pathogens, especially against multidrug-resistant strains. The acute toxicity of the compounds to Daphnia magna ranged from 1.21 to 33.39 mg/L (moderately and slightly toxic). Based on the docking results, it can be suggested that the antibacterial and antifungal effects of the compounds can be explained by the inhibition of bacterial wall component synthesis.

Shipping activities are increasing with sea ice receding in the Arctic, leading to higher risks of accidents and oil spills. Because Arctic toxicity data are limited, oil spill risk assessments for the Arctic are challenging to conduct. In the present study, we tested if acute oil toxicity metrics obtained at temperate conditions reflect those at Arctic conditions. The effects of temperature (4 °C, 12 °C, and 20 °C) on the median lethal concentration (LC50) and the critical body residue (CBR) of the temperate invertebrate Gammarus locusta exposed to water accommodated fractions of a fuel oil were determined. Both toxicity metrics decreased with increasing temperature. In addition, data for the temperate G. locusta were compared to data obtained for Arctic Gammarus species at 4 °C. The LC50 for the Arctic Gammarus sp. was a factor of 3 higher than that for the temperate G. locusta at 4 °C, but its CBR was similar, although both the exposure time and concentration were extended to reach lethality. Probably, this was a result of the larger size and higher weight and total lipid content of Arctic gammarids compared to the temperate gammarids. Taken together, the present data support the use of temperate acute oil toxicity data as a basis for assessing risks in the Arctic region, provided that the effects of temperature on oil fate and functional traits (e.g., body size and lipid content) of test species are considered. As such, using the CBR as a toxicity metric is beneficial because it is independent of functional traits, despite its temperature dependency. There is still much to learn with respect to the potential for microplastics (MPs) to interact with environmental toxins and biota. In the present study, we investigated the effect of MPs on the toxicity of copper (Cu) to rice seeds (Oryza sativa L.). The 7-day median effective concentration (EC50) value of MPs on rice seed germination was 864 mg/L (95% confidence interval [CI] 839 to 897 mg/L). We found that MPs slightly reduced Cu toxicity to rice seeds. The 7-day EC50 of Cu on rice seed germination increased from 7.29 mg/L (95% CI 7.10-7.52 mg/L) to 7.93 mg/L (95% CI 7.58-8.08 mg/L) in the presence of 20 mg/L MPs. We examined this toxicity reduction phenomenon by investigating the role of MPs in the process of Cu transport, Cu accumulation, and metabolic responses. Further investigation found that the MPs used in the present study hardly adsorbed Cu, but these MPs accumulated on the coats of rice seeds and significantly reduced Cu accumulation in rice seedlings. When Cu concentration was 10 mg/L, the presence of MPs reduced the accumulation of Cu in rice seedlings by 34%. We also found that, compared with only Cu present, the addition of MPs resulted in lower reactive oxygen species accumulation and higher catalase activity and glutathione levels in rice seedlings, which also contributed to Cu toxicity reduction. Collectively, the present study shows that polystyrene MPs have the potential to form associations with plant structures which can ultimately impact heavy metal bioaccessibility and therefore toxicity. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DbCM) is characterized by diastolic dysfunction, which progresses into heart failure and aberrant electrophysiology in diabetic patients. Dyslipidemia in type 2 diabetic patients leads to the accumulation of lipid droplets (LDs) in cardiomyocytes and results in lipid toxicity which has been suggested to drive DbCM. It is aimed to explore potential pathways that may boost LDs degradation in DbCM and restore cardiac function. LDs accumulation resulted in an increase in lipid toxicity in DbCM hearts is confirmed. Microlipophagy pathway, rather than traditional macrolipophagy, is activated in DbCM hearts. RNA-Seq data and Rab7-CKO mice implicate that Rab7 is a major modulator of the microlipophagy pathway. Mechanistically, Rab7 is phosphorylated at Tyrosine 183, which allows the recruitment of Rab-interacting lysosome protein (Rilp) to proceed LDs degradation by lysosome. Treating DbCM mice with Rab7 activator ML-098 enhanced Rilp level and rescued the observed cardiac dysfunction. Overall, Rab7-Rilp-mediated microlipophagy may be a promising target in the treatment of lipid toxicity in DbCM is suggested.

Commercialization of rechargeable lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries has revolutionized the design of portable electronic devices and is facilitating the current transition to electric vehicles. The technological specifications of Li-ion batteries continue to evolve through the introduction of various high-risk liquid electrolyte chemicals, yet critical evaluation of the physical, environmental, and human health hazards of these substances is lacking. Using the GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals approach, we conducted a chemical hazard assessment (CHA) of 103 electrolyte chemicals categorized into seven chemical groups: salts, carbonates, esters, ethers, sulfoxides-sulfites-sulfones, overcharge protection additives, and flame-retardant additives. To minimize data gaps, we focused on six toxicity and hazard data sources, including three empirical and three nonempirical predictive data sources. Furthermore, we investigated the structural similarities among selected electrolyte chemicals using the ChemMine tool and the simplified molecular input line entry system inputs from PubChem to evaluate whether chemicals with similar structures exhibit similar toxicity. The results demonstrate that salts, overcharge protection additives, and flame-retardant additives contain the most toxic components in the electrolyte solutions. Furthermore, carbonates, esters, and ethers account for most flammability hazards in Li-ion batteries. This study supports the complementary use of quantitative structure-activity relationship models to minimize data gaps and inconsistencies in CHA. The on-going anthropogenic degradation of freshwater habitats has drastically altered the environmental supply of both nutrients and common pollutants. Most organisms living in these altered habitats experience interactive effects of various stressors that can initiate adjustments at multiple levels impacting their fitness. Hence, studies measuring response to a single environmental parameter fail to capture the complexities of the status quo. We tested both the individual and the interactive effect of arsenic (As) exposure, food quantity, and dietary phosphorus (P)-supply on six life-history traits (Juvenile Growth Rate; Adult Growth Rate; Age and Size at Maturity, Lifespan, and Fecundity) as surrogates for organismal fitness in the keystone aquatic grazer Daphnia pulex. We also tested the effect of food quantity and P-supply on somatic As accumulation in Daphnia. Our results indicated an influence of P-supply on neonatal growth and an influence of As and food quantity on growth and maintenance later in life. Maturation was strongly influenced by all three variables, with no reproduction observed in the presence of two or more environmental stressors. We found a strong interaction between As and dietary P, with increased P-supply intensifing the toxicity effect of As. No such effects were seen between As and food quantity, indicating a differential role of quantity versus quality on As toxicity. We found a nominal effect of diet on somatic As accumulation. The results from the present study emphasize the importance of considering such interactions between co-occurring environmental stressors and the dietary status of organisms, to better predict and manage impacts and risks associated with common environmental toxicants in highly vulnerable ecosystems. Peptide- and protein-based therapeutics are becoming a promising treatment regimen for myriad diseases. Toxicity of proteins is the primary hurdle for protein-based therapies. Thus, there is an urgent need for accurate in silico methods for determining toxic proteins to filter the pool of potential candidates. At the same time, it is imperative to precisely identify non-toxic proteins to expand the possibilities for protein-based biologics. To address this challenge, we proposed an ensemble framework, called VISH-Pred, comprising models built by fine-tuning ESM2 transformer models on a large, experimentally validated, curated dataset of protein and peptide toxicities. The primary steps in the VISH-Pred framework are to efficiently estimate protein toxicities taking just the protein sequence as input, employing an under sampling technique to handle the humongous class-imbalance in the data and learning representations from fine-tuned ESM2 protein language models which are then fed to machine learning techniques such as Lightgbm and XGBoost. The VISH-Pred framework is able to correctly identify both peptides/proteins with potential toxicity and non-toxic proteins, achieving a Matthews correlation coefficient of 0.737, 0.716 and 0.322 and F1-score of 0.759, 0.696 and 0.713 on three non-redundant blind tests, respectively, outperforming other methods by over $10\%$ on these quality metrics. Moreover, VISH-Pred achieved the best accuracy and area under receiver operating curve scores on these independent test sets, highlighting the robustness and generalization capability of the framework. By making VISH-Pred available as an easy-to-use web server, we expect it to serve as a valuable asset for future endeavors aimed at discerning the toxicity of peptides and enabling efficient protein-based therapeutics.

Water bodies play a crucial role in supporting life, maintaining the environment, and preserving the ecology for the people of India. However, in recent decades, human activities have led to various alterations in aquatic environments, resulting in environmental degradation through pollution. The safety of utilizing surface water sources for drinking and other purposes has come under intense scrutiny due to rapid population growth and industrial expansion. Surface water pollution due to micro-plastics (MPs) (plastics < 5 mm in size) is one of the emerging pollutants in metropolitan cities of developing countries because of its utmost resilience and synthetic nature. Recent studies on the surface water bodies (river, pond, Lake etc.) portrait the correlation between the MPs level with different parameters of pollution such as specific conductivity, total phosphate, and biological oxygen demand. Fibers represent the predominant form of MPs discovered in surface water bodies, exhibiting fluctuations across seasons. Consequently, present study prioritizes understanding the adaptation, prevalence, attributes, fluctuations, and spatial dispersion of MPs in both sediment and surface water environments. Furthermore, the study aims to identify existing gaps in the current understanding and underscore opportunities for future investigation. From the present study, it has been reported that, the concentration of MPs in the range of 0.2-45.2 items/L at the Xisha Islands in the south China sea, whereas in India it was found in the range of 96 items/L in water samples and 259 items/kg in sediment samples. This would certainly assist the urban planners in achieving sustainable development goals to mitigate the increasing amount of emergent pollutant load.

Microbial degradation of fluorinated compounds raised significant attention because of their widespread distribution and potential environmental impacts. Here, we report a bacterial isolate, Rhodococcus sp. NJF-7 capable of defluorinating monofluorinated medium-chain length alkanes. This isolate consumed 2.29 ± 0.13 mmol L- 1 of 1-fluorodecane (FD) during a 52 h incubation period, resulting in a significant release of inorganic fluoride amounting to 2.16 ± 0.03 mmol L- 1. The defluorination process was strongly affected by the initial FD concentration and pH conditions, with lower pH increasing fluoride toxicity to bacterial cells and inhibiting enzymatic defluorination activity. Stoichiometric conversion of FD to fluoride was observed at neutral pH with resting cells, while defluorination was significantly lower at reduced pH (6.5). The discovery of the metabolites decanoic acid and methyl decanoate suggests that the initial attack by monooxygenases may be responsible for the biological defluorination of FD. The findings here provide new insights into microbial defluorination processes, specifically aiding in understanding the environmental fate of organic semi-fluorinated alkane chemicals.

PURPOSE: Automated scalp cooling (ASC) is available to patients undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer to decrease chemotherapy-induced alopecia. This study sought to elucidate patient and chemotherapy nursing perspectives on the ASC experience. METHODS: This is a survey-based study of chemotherapy nursing staff and patients with breast cancer regarding perceived efficacy, side effects, administration, support, and overall opinions of ASC. Chemotherapy nurses across a large, multi-regional tertiary healthcare system completed a one-time survey regarding their experiences in administering ASC. Breast cancer patients who utilized ASC were surveyed along with a control group who underwent alopecia-inducing chemotherapy without ASC use for comparison. RESULTS: The majority of nursing responses reported inadequate technical support, an increased burden of administering ASC compared to other clinical duties, and that they would not recommend ASC to a family member or friend. Patients who underwent ASC reported significantly less hair loss and were significantly less likely to shave their heads or wear a wig, but this did not translate into significant differences in body image or psychosocial wellbeing responses. Time investment was the most significant burden related to ASC. CONCLUSION: Patients using ASC reported significantly less hair loss compared to those not using ASC during alopecia-inducing breast cancer chemotherapy, but this did not translate to improved body image. The majority of chemotherapy nurses reported they lacked adequate support in administering ASC and would not recommend it. Enhanced nursing support may provide a means for improving the ASC experience for both nursing staff and patients.

In this study, we investigated the effects of PVC microplastics (PVC-MPs) using two different animal models: the brittle star Ophiactis virens, and the African clawed frog Xenopus laevis. This is the first study using an environmental relevant sample of PVC-MPs obtained through mechanical fragmentation of a common PVC plumbing pipe. Exposure experiments on brittle star were performed on the adult stage for a duration of 14 days, while those on African clawed frog were performed on the embryogenic developmental stage according to the standardized FETAX protocol (Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus). For both models, different endpoints were analysed: mortality, developmental parameters, behavioural assays and histological analyses on target organs by optical and electronic microscopy. Results showed that the concentration of 0.1 µg mL-1 PVC do not cause any adverse effects in both models (common NOEC concentration), while exposure to 1 µg mL-1 PVC adversely affected at least one species (common LOEC concentration). In particular arm regeneration efficiency was the most affected parameters in O. virens leading to a significantly lower differentiation pattern at 1 µg mL-1 PVC. On the contrary, in X. laevis larvae histopathological analyses and behavioural tests were the most susceptible endpoints, exhibiting several abnormal figures and different swimming speed at 10 µg mL-1 PVC. Histopathological analyses revealed a higher abundance of degenerating cells, pyknotic nuclei and cellular debris in the gut of exposed larvae in respect to control. The comparative analyses performed in this work allowed to characterize the specificity of action of the PVC-MPs on the two species, underlining the importance of exploring a large spectrum of endpoints to offer adequate protection in the emerging fields of microplastic research.
