INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) presents with decreased heart rate variability (HRV) from its early stages. However, most of its evidence originates from HRV measurements in parasympathetic dominant states. In this study, we aimed to examine whether HRV in sympathetic dominant states during the head-up tilt table test (HUT) serves as a marker of autonomic dysfunction in PD and isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD). METHODS: We retrospectively assessed 102 patients with PD, 10 patients with iRBD, and 43 healthy controls. We then measured the coefficient of variation of RR intervals as an HRV parameter in sympathetic dominant states (CVRR-S) and parasympathetic dominant states (CVRR-P). Furthermore, we evaluated parameters of cardiac autonomic function, including HUT and the heart-to-mediastinum (H/M) ratio of cardiac metaiodobenzylguanidine scintigraphy. RESULTS: Patients with iRBD and PD at Hoehn and Yahr stage I exhibited a significantly decreased CVRR-S compared to healthy controls (controls vs. iRBD vs. PD; 1.82 ± 0.64 % vs. 1.13 ± 0.41 % vs. 1.15 ± 0.51 %, p < 0.001), although no further deterioration was observed in PD at more severe Hoehn and Yahr stages. CVRR-S showed a significant correlation with the H/M ratio in PD (r = 0.51, p < 0.001). Additionally, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis revealed a larger area under the ROC curve in CVRR-S compared to that in CVRR-P for discriminating PD or iRBD from healthy controls. CONCLUSION: HRV in sympathetic dominant states shows the potential to be a marker of autonomic dysfunction in iRBD and early-stage PD, aiding in early diagnosis and patient stratification.

INTRODUCTION: Most persons with an active menstrual cycle suffer from a range of aversive symptoms (e.g. reduced ability to concentrate) in the days before their menstruation - the premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Biological and cognitive mechanisms of PMS are poorly understood. It has been shown that vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV), a physiological marker of self-regulation, decreases during the PMS-affected cycle phase (luteal phase) only in individuals with high PMS symptomology. This study investigates the specific associations between vmHRV, PMS symptomology and cognitive self-regulation (attentional control). METHODS: In this between-subject study, participants completed an vmHRV baseline measurement through electrocardiography, a reaction time paradigm to measure attentional control (modified attention network test revised, ANT-R) and filled out a questionnaire regarding impact of PMS as well as current menstrual phase. RESULTS: Mixed Model analysis showed interactions effects in the hypothesized direction. VmHRV was decreased during the luteal phase only in individuals with higher PMS. Analogously, performance in the Executive Functioning of the ANT-R task was reduced in the luteal compared to the follicular phase only in individuals with increased PMS symptoms. No effects were found in the Orienting Network Score. DISCUSSION: The results point in the direction of associations between vmHRV, PMS and self-regulation. This could hint at common underlying mechanisms. Further research, however, must be conducted to examine causal pathways to confirm these associations.

BACKGROUND: A variety of metrics are used to describe glycemic variation, some of which may be difficult to comprehend or require complex strategies for smoothing of the glucose curve. We aimed to describe a new metric named time with rapid change of glucose (TRC), which is presented as percentage of time, similar to time above range (TAR), time in range (TIR), and time below range (TBR). METHOD: We downloaded glucose data for 90 days from 159 persons with type 1 diabetes using the Abbott Freestyle Libre version 1. We defined TRC as the proportion of time (%) with an absolute rate of change of glucose > 1.5 mmol/L/15 minutes (1.8mg/dL/min) corresponding to a minimum rate of change for glucose in the 3.9-10.0 mmol/L (70-180 mg/dL) range within 1 hour. TRC is related to the other glucose variability metrics: CV within day (CVw) and mean amplitude of glycemic excursion (MAGE). RESULTS: The more than 1.27 million glucose rates were t-location scale distributed with SD 0.91 mmol/L/15 min (1.1 mg/dL/15 min). The median TRC was 6.9% (IQR 4.5%-9.5%). The proportion of TRC with positive slope was 3.9% (2.6%-5.3%) and significantly higher than the proportion with negative slope 2.8% (1.5%-4.4%) P < .001. TRC correlated with CVw and MAGE (Spearman's correlation coefficient .56 and .65, respectively, P < .001). CONCLUSION: TRC is proposed as an easily perceived metric to compare the performance of hybrid or fully automated closed-loop insulin delivery systems to obtain glucose homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with high blood pressure that responds poorly to usual antihypertensive therapy. METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-one subjects with OSA had 25% higher plasma norepinephrine and 42% higher epinephrine measured every 2 h over 24 h than 20 control subjects. They also excreted more sodium during sleep. This suggested that that a sympatholytic would be a more successful antihypertensive than a diuretic. To test this hypothesis we treated a second group of 23 hypertensive apneics with placebo, 6 weeks of the sympatholytic guanfacine and 6 weeks of hydrochlorothiazide in a crossover study. Guanfacine lowered 24-hour blood pressure by 9.6/6.7 mmHg, more than the 5.4/2.9 mmHg effect of hydrochlorothiazide (P < 0.05). Nighttime systolic blood pressure dipping was poor at 6.6 ± 1.8%. Hydrochlorothiazide did not alter blood pressure dipping but guanfacine improved dipping to 9.1 ± 1.2%, a better result (P = 0.03) than from the diuretic. Central aortic pressure by pulse wave analysis was 120/84 mmHg on hydrochlorothiazide and 109/72 on guanfacine, (P < 0.05). Guanfacine, but not hydrochlorothiazide, improved baroreflex sensitivity, heart rate variability and flow mediated vascular dilation, suggesting that decreasing the elevated sympathetic nerve activity of obstructive sleep apnea returned vascular function toward normal. CONCLUSIONS: OSA is the most common condition associated with antihypertensive treatment failure. It increased sympathetic nerve activity day and night. Drugs that block sympathetic nerve function are not among the 4 most commonly recommended classes of antihypertensives but diuretics are. Sympatholytic therapy was superior to diuretic treatment for hypertension associated with sleep apnea. OBJECTIVES: Self-compassion has been identified as a psychological resource for ageing well. To date, self-compassion among older adults has typically been conceptualised as a trait variable. This study examined whether day-to-day (state) variability in sef-compassion was associated with negative affective reactivity to daily stressors. METHODS: Daily diary assessment methods were used to examine the potential moderating role of between- and within-person self-compassion on the relationship between daily stressors and negative affect. A community-based sample of 107 older adults aged 65+ completed questionnaires once daily over 14 days. RESULTS: Multilevel modelling revealed that 37% of the variance in self-compassion occurred within-persons. Daily self-compassion moderated the relationship between daily stressor exposure and daily negative affect. On days with greater stressor exposure than usual, older adults showed less negative affective reactivity on days when self-compassion was higher, compared with days when self-compassion was lower. No modertaing effects were observed for between-person (trait) self-compassion. DISCUSSION: These findings suggest that self-compassion in older adults should be conceptualised as both a state and trait variable and that state self-compassion may be protective in the stress-reactivity pathway. Future research should investigate whether brief self-compassion interventions might help older adults to avoid or down-regulate negative emotions in response to stressors.

Autism spectrum disorder (autism) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition characterized by early emerging impairments in social behavior and communication. EEG represents a powerful and non-invasive tool for examining functional brain differences in autism. Recent EEG evidence suggests that greater intra-individual trial-to-trial variability across EEG responses in stimulus-related tasks may characterize brain differences in autism. Traditional analysis of EEG data largely focuses on mean trends of the trial-averaged data, where trial-level analysis is rarely performed due to low neural signal to noise ratio. We propose to use nonlinear (shape-invariant) mixed effects (NLME) models to study intra-individual inter-trial EEG response variability using trial-level EEG data. By providing more precise metrics of response variability, this approach could enrich our understanding of neural disparities in autism and potentially aid the identification of objective markers. The proposed multilevel NLME models quantify variability in the signal's interpretable and widely recognized features (e.g., latency and amplitude) while also regularizing estimation based on noisy trial-level data. Even though NLME models have been studied for more than three decades, existing methods cannot scale up to large data sets. We propose computationally feasible estimation and inference methods via the use of a novel minorization-maximization (MM) algorithm. Extensive simulations are conducted to show the efficacy of the proposed procedures. Applications to data from a large national consortium find that children with autism have larger intra-individual inter-trial variability in P1 latency in a visual evoked potential (VEP) task, compared to their neurotypical peers.

Variation in forage composition decreases the accuracy of diets delivered to dairy cows. However, variability of forages can be managed using a renewal reward model (RRM) and genetic algorithm (GA) to optimize sampling and monitoring practices for farm conditions. Specifically, use of quality-control-charts to monitor forage composition can identify changes in composition for which adjustment in the formulated diet will result in a better match of the nutrients delivered to cows. The objectives of this study were 1) assess the use of a clustering algorithm to estimate the mean time the process is stable or in-control (d) (TStable) and the magnitude of the change in forage composition between stable periods (ΔForage) for corn silage and alfalfa-grass silage which are input parameters for the RRM; 2) compare optimized farm-specific sampling practices (number of samples (n), sampling interval (TSample) and control limits (ΔLimit) using previously proposed defaults and our estimates for the TStable and ΔForage input parameters; and 3) conduct a simulation study to compare the number of recommended diet changes costs of quality control under the proposed sampling and monitoring protocols. We estimated the TStable and ΔForage parameters for corn silage NDF and starch and alfalfa-grass silage NDF and CP using a k-means clustering approach applied to forage samples collected from 8 farms, 3x/week during a 16-week period. We compared 4 sampling and monitoring protocols that resulted from the 2 methods for estimating TStable and ΔForage (default values and our proposed method) and either optimizing only the control limit (Optim1) or optimizing the control limits, the number of samples, and the number of days between sampling (Optim2). We simulated the outcomes of implementing the optimized monitoring protocols using a quality control chart for corn silage and alfalfa-grass silage of each farm. Estimates of T^Stable and Δ^Forage from the k-means clustering analysis were, respectively, shorter and larger than previously proposed default values. In the simulated quality control monitoring, larger Δ^Forage estimates increased the optimized ΔLimit resulting in fewer detected shifts in composition of forages and a lower frequency of false alarms and a lower quality control cost ($/d). Recommended diet reformulation intervals from the simulated quality control analysis were specific for the type of forage and farm management practices. The median of the diet reformulation intervals for all farms using our optimal protocols was 14 d (Q1 = 8, Q3 = 26) for corn silage and 16 d (Q1 = 8, Q3 = 26) for alfalfa-grass silage.

Transitional features of desert environments partially determine the risks associated with ecosystems. Influenced by climate change and human activities, the variability and uncertainty of desertification levels and ecological risks in the Qinghai Area of Qilian Mountain National Park (QMNPQA) has become increasingly prominent. As a critical ecological barrier in northwest China, monitoring desertification dynamics and ecological risks is crucial for maintaining ecosystem stability. This study identifies the optimal monitoring model from four constructed desertification monitoring models and analyzes spatiotemporal changes in desertification. The spatial and temporal changes in ecological risks and their primary driving factors were analyzed using methods such as raster overlay calculation, geographic detector, cloud model, and trend analysis. The main conclusions are as follows: The desertification feature spatial model based on GNDVI-Albedo demonstrates better applicability in the study area, with an inversion accuracy of 81.24%. The levels of desertification and ecological risks in QMNPQA exhibit significant spatial heterogeneity, with a gradual decrease observed from northwest to southeast. From 2000 to 2020, there is an overall decreasing trend in desertification levels and ecological risks, with the decreasing trend area accounting for 89.82% and 85.71% respectively, mainly concentrated in the southeastern and northwestern parts of the study area. The proportion of areas with increasing trends is 4.49% and 7.05% respectively, scattered in patches in the central and southern edge areas. Surface temperature (ST), Digital Elevation Map (DEM), and Green normalized difference vegetation index (GNDVI) are the most influential factors determining the spatial distribution of ecological risks in QMNPQA. The effects of management and climatic factors on ecological risks demonstrate a significant antagonistic effect, highlighting the positive contributions of human activities in mitigating the driving effects of climate change on ecological risks. The research results can provide reference for desertification prevention and ecological quality improvement in QMNPQA.

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) have been reported often throughout the world, producing severe effects on marine ecosystems. However, the spatial pattern and trend of MHWs in the Gulf of Thailand (GOT) is still unknown. Based on high-resolution daily satellite data over a 40-year period from 1982 to 2021, changes in annual mean SST and MHW occurrences across the GOT are explored here. The results demonstrate that during a warming hiatus (1998-2009), annual mean SST in the GOT encountered a dropping trend, followed by an increasing trend during a warming reacceleration period (2010-2021). Although a warming hiatus and a warming reacceleration occurred in the annual mean SST after 1998, regional averaged SSTs were still 0.18 °C-0.42 °C higher than that for 1982-1997. Statistical distributions reveal that there was a significant shift in both annual mean SSTs and annual extreme hot SSTs. These changes have the potential to increase the frequency of MHWs. Further analysis reveals that MHW frequency has increased at a rate of 1.11 events per decade from 1982 to 2021, which is 2.5 times the global mean rate. For the period 2010-2021, the frequency and intensity of MHWs in the GOT have never dropped, but have instead been more frequent, longer lasting and extreme than those metrics of MHWs between 1982 and 2009. Furthermore, the findings highlight significant changes in the SST over the GOT that may lead us to change or modify the reference period of the MHW definition. The findings also suggest that heat transport and redistribution mechanisms in the GOT sea are changing. This study contributes to our understanding of MHW features in the GOT and the implications for marine ecosystems.

Cognitive disturbance in identifying, processing, and responding to salient or novel stimuli are typical attributes of schizophrenia (SCH), and P300 has been proven to serve as a reliable psychosis endophenotype. The instability of neural processing across trials, i.e., trial-to-trial variability (TTV), is getting increasing attention in uncovering how the SCH "noisy" brain organizes during cognition processes. Nevertheless, the TTV in the brain network remains unrevealed, notably how it varies in different task stages. In this study, resorting to the time-varying directed electroencephalogram (EEG) network, we investigated the time-resolved TTV of the functional organizations subserving the evoking of P300. Results revealed anomalous TTV in time-varying networks across the delta, theta, alpha, beta1, and beta2 bands of SCH. The TTV of cross-band time-varying network properties can efficiently recognize SCH (accuracy: 83.39%, sensitivity: 89.22%, and specificity: 74.55%) and evaluate the psychiatric symptoms (i.e., Hamilton's depression scale-24, r = 0.430, p = 0.022, RMSE = 4.891; Hamilton's anxiety scale-14, r = 0.377, p = 0.048, RMSE = 4.575). Our study brings new insights into probing the time-resolved functional organization of the brain, and TTV in time-varying networks may provide a powerful tool for mining the substrates accounting for SCH and diagnostic evaluation of SCH.

Introduction: Fetal heart rate variability (fHRV) is a tool used to investigate the functioning of the fetal autonomic nervous system. Despite the significance of preeclampsia, fHRV during the latent phase of labor has not been extensively studied. This study aimed to evaluate fetal cardiac autonomic activity by using linear and nonlinear indices of fHRV analysis in women diagnosed with preeclampsia without hypertensive treatment during gestation, compared to normotensive women during the latent phase of labor. Methods: A cross-sectional and exploratory study was conducted among pregnant women in the latent phase of labor, forming three study groups: normotensive or control (C, 38.8 ± 1.3 weeks of pregnancy, n = 22), preeclampsia with moderate features (P, 37.6 ± 1.4 weeks of pregnancy n = 10), and preeclampsia with severe features (SP, 36.9 ± 1.2 weeks of pregnancy, n = 12). None of the participants received anti-hypertensive treatment during their pregnancy. Linear and nonlinear features of beat-to-beat fHRV, including temporal, frequency, symbolic dynamics, and entropy measures, were analyzed to compare normotensive and preeclamptic groups. Results: Significantly lower values of multiscale entropy (MSE) and short-term complexity index (Ci) were observed in the preeclamptic groups compared to the C group (p < 0.05). Additionally, higher values of SDNN (standard deviation of R-R intervals) and higher values of low-frequency power (LF) were found in the P group compared to the C group. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that changes in the complexity of fetal heart rate fluctuations may indicate possible disruptions in the autonomic nervous system of fetuses in groups affected by undiagnosed preeclampsia during pregnancy. Reduced complexity and shifts in fetal autonomic cardiac activity could be associated with preeclampsia's pathophysiological mechanisms during the latent phase of labor.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a prominent air pollutant in cities, with far-reaching implications for both local air quality and global atmospheric chemistry. The long-term change in atmospheric CO levels at a specific location is influenced by a complex interplay of local emissions, atmospheric transport, and photochemical processes, making it a subject of considerable interest. This study presents an 8-year analysis (2014-2021) of in situ CO observations using a cutting-edge laser-based analyzer at an urban site in Ahmedabad, western India. The long-term observations reveal a subtle trend in CO levels, masked by contrasting year-to-year variations, particular after 2018, across distinct diurnal time windows. Mid-afternoon (12:00-16:00 h) CO levels, reflecting background and regional conditions, remained relatively stable over the study period. In contrast, evening (18:00-21:00 h) CO levels, influenced by local emissions, exhibited substantial inter-annual variability without discernible trends from 2014 to 2018. However, post-2018, evening CO levels showed a consistent decline, predating COVID-19 lockdown measures. This decline coincided with the nationwide adoption of Bharat stage IV emission standards and other measures aimed at reducing vehicular emissions. The COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 further resulted in a noteworthy 29% reduction in evening CO levels compared to the pre-lockdown (2014-2019) period, highlighting the potential for substantial CO reduction through stringent vehicular emission controls. The observed long-term changes in CO levels do not align with the decreasing emission estimated by various inventories from 2014 to 2018, suggesting a need for improved emission statistics in Indian urban regions. This study underscores the importance of ongoing continuous CO measurements in urban areas to inform policy efforts aimed at controlling atmospheric pollutants.

PURPOSE: Perioperative decision making for large (> 2 cm) rectal polyps with ambiguous features is complex. The most common intraprocedural assessment is clinician judgement alone while radiological and endoscopic biopsy can provide periprocedural detail. Fluorescence-augmented machine learning (FA-ML) methods may optimise local treatment strategy. METHODS: Surgeons of varying grades, all performing colonoscopies independently, were asked to visually judge endoscopic videos of large benign and early-stage malignant (potentially suitable for local excision) rectal lesions on an interactive video platform (Mindstamp) with results compared with and between final pathology, radiology and a novel FA-ML classifier. Statistical analyses of data used Fleiss Multi-rater Kappa scoring, Spearman Coefficient and Frequency tables. RESULTS: Thirty-two surgeons judged 14 ambiguous polyp videos (7 benign, 7 malignant). In all cancers, initial endoscopic biopsy had yielded false-negative results. Five of each lesion type had had a pre-excision MRI with a 60% false-positive malignancy prediction in benign lesions and a 60% over-staging and 40% equivocal rate in cancers. Average clinical visual cancer judgement accuracy was 49% (with only 'fair' inter-rater agreement), many reporting uncertainty and higher reported decision confidence did not correspond to higher accuracy. This compared to 86% ML accuracy. Size was misjudged visually by a mean of 20% with polyp size underestimated in 4/6 and overestimated in 2/6. Subjective narratives regarding decision-making requested for 7/14 lesions revealed wide rationale variation between participants. CONCLUSION: Current available clinical means of ambiguous rectal lesion assessment is suboptimal with wide inter-observer variation. Fluorescence based AI augmentation may advance this field via objective, explainable ML methods.

PURPOSE: For men with intermediate risk prostate cancer treated with definitive therapy, the addition of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) reduces the risk of distant metastasis and cancer-related mortality. However, the absolute benefit of ADT varies by baseline cancer risk. Estimates of prognosis have improved over time, and little is known about ADT decision making in the modern era. We sought to characterize variability and identify factors associated with intended ADT use within the [statewide quality consortium]. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with localized prostate cancer undergoing definitive radiotherapy were enrolled from 6/9/20 to 6/26/23 (n=815). Prospective data was collected using standardized patient, physician, and physicist forms. Intended ADT use was prospectively defined and is the primary outcome. Associations with patient, tumor, and practice-related factors were tested with multivariable analyses (MVA). Random intercept modeling was used to estimate facility-level variability. RESULTS: Five-hundred seventy patients across 26 facilities were enrolled with intermediate risk disease. ADT was intended for 46% of men (n=262/570), which differed by NCCN favorable intermediate-risk (FIR) (23.5%, n=38/172) vs unfavorable intermediate-risk (UIR) disease (56.3%, n=224/398), p<0.001. After adjusting for the statewide case mix, the predicted probability of intended ADT use varied significantly across facilities, ranging from 15.4% (95% CI 5.4-37.0%) to 71.7% (95% CI 57.0-82.9%), p<0.01. MVA showed that grade group 3 (OR 4.60 [3.20-6.67]), ≥50% positive cores (OR 2.15 [1.43-3.25]), and PSA 10-20 (OR 1.87 [1.24-2.84]) were associated with ADT use. AUC was improved when incorporating MRI adverse features (0.76) or radiation treatment variables (0.76), but there remained significant facility level heterogeneity in all models evaluated (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Within a state-wide consortium, there is substantial facility-level heterogeneity in intended ADT use for men with intermediate risk prostate cancer. Future efforts are necessary to identify patients who will benefit most from ADT and to develop strategies to standardize appropriate use.

Climate change threatens many species by a poleward/upward movement of their thermal niche. While we know that faster movement has stronger impacts, little is known on how fluctuations of niche movement affect population outcomes. Environmental fluctuations often affect populations negatively, but theory and experiments have revealed some positive effects. We study how fluctuations around the average speed of the niche impact a species' persistence, abundance and realized niche width under climate change. We find that the outcome depends on how fluctuations manifest and what the relative time scale of population growth and climate fluctuations are. When populations are close to extinction with the average speed, fluctuations around this average accelerate population decline. However, populations not yet close to extinction can increase in abundance and/or realized niche width from such fluctuations. Long-lived species increase more when their niche size remains constant, short-lived species increase more when their niche size varies.

Monitoring sandy shoreline evolution from years to decades is critical to understand the past and predict the future of our coasts. Optical satellite imagery can now infer such datasets globally, but sometimes with large uncertainties, poor spatial resolution, and thus debatable outcomes. Here we validate and analyse satellite-derived-shoreline positions (1984-2021) along the Atlantic coast of Europe using a moving-averaged approach based on coastline characteristics, indicating conservative uncertainties of long-term trends around 0.4 m/year and a potential bias towards accretion. We show that west-facing open coasts are more prone to long-term erosion, whereas relatively closed coasts favor accretion, although most of computed trends fall within the range of uncertainty. Interannual shoreline variability is influenced by regionally dominant atmospheric climate indices. Quasi-straight open coastlines typically show the strongest and more alongshore-uniform links, while embayed coastlines, especially those not exposed to the dominant wave climate, show weaker and more variable correlation with the indices. Our results provide a spatial continuum between previous local-scale studies, while emphasizing the necessity to further reduce satellite-derived shoreline trend uncertainties. They also call for applications based on a relevant averaging approach and the inclusion of coastal setting parameters to unravel the forcing-response spectrum of sandy shorelines globally.

Horses participating in endurance events encounter enormous physical challenges. Heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) have been reported before and after endurance rides, but these have not been determined during the rides. Moreover, the modulation in HRV and haematology in horses with different ride results (completed a course or disqualified due to irregular gait) have not been elucidated. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate changes in HR, HRV, and haematological parameters during novice endurance rides and to compare these parameters between horses that successfully completed the course (SC) or were disqualified for irregular gait (FTQ-GA). Beat-to-beat (RR) intervals of 16 healthy horses (aged 6-14 years) were recorded before and throughout the approximately 40 km endurance event. Blood samples were taken at the pre-ride inspection and after passing each veterinary inspection. HRV and haematology measures were determined from nine SC and seven FTQ-GA horses. Horses with different ride results demonstrated distinctive physiological stress responses. Increases in PCV, RBC, WBC and neutrophils after completing the ride were found only in SC horses, implying that they were ridden with greater effort than FTQ-GA horses. A reduction in HRV during warm-up, followed by a significant reduction during the first and second riding phases, was observed. HRV returned to baseline at the compulsory rest period of both phases. FTQ-GA horses experienced lower RR intervals, RR triangular index, modified deceleration capacity, very-low-frequency band, and parasympathetic nervous system index, coinciding with higher HR and sympathetic nervous system and stress indices than SC horses. These results indicated that endurance horses revealed a shift toward sympathetic activity during the ride. Lower parasympathetic activity in FTQ-GA horses suggests they were under more stress or discomfort than SC horses in novice endurance rides. These results have welfare implications, indicating the need for additional rest breaks in FTQ-GA horses.

The present research study aimed to investigate the psycholinguistic aspects of interlanguage (IL) variability in English as a second language learners from Iran. Three morphological forms were specifically examined in this study: the plural "-s," past tense forms, and present tense forms. In order to investigate the learners' cognitive processes, the researchers used a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative semi-structured interviews with quantitative analysis of written task performance. Under various task conditions, learners exhibited two opposing patterns of IL variability (increasing and decreasing) in their morphological forms. Various degrees of accuracy were noted for every kind of morpheme. Different students allocated their attention differently to form and meaning in both under pressure and relaxed task environments. The observed variations could have been caused by limited working memory and attention capacity in addition to L1 transfer. The research indicated that the field of second language acquisition could benefit from an explanatory approach to comprehend IL variability from the learner's perspective. It provides recommendations for larger-scale research projects in a variety of educational contexts, along with pedagogical implications.
