RESUMEN

SCOPE: Higher intake of cruciferous and allium vegetables is associated with lower cardiometabolic risk. Little research has investigated the cardiometabolic effects of S-methyl cysteine sulfoxide (SMCSO), found abundant in these vegetables. This study hypothesizes that SMCSO will blunt development of metabolic syndrome features in mice fed high-fat feed. METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifty C57BL/6 male mice are randomly assigned to standard-chow, high-fat, or high-fat supplemented with low-SMCSO (43 mg kg-1 body weight [BW] day-1), medium-SMCSO (153 mg kg-1 BW day-1), or high-SMCSO (256 mg kg-1 BW day-1) for 12-weeks. High-fat with SMCSO did not prevent diet-induced obesity, glucose intolerance, or hypercholesterolemia. Mice fed high-fat with SMCSO has higher hepatic lipids than mice fed standard-chow or high-fat alone. Urinary SMCSO increases at 6- and 12-weeks in the low-SMCSO group, before reducing 46% and 28% in the medium- and high-SMCSO groups, respectively, at 12-weeks, suggesting possible tissue saturation. Interestingly, two SMCSO-fed groups consume significantly more feed, without significant weight gain. Due to limitations in measuring consumed feed, caution should be taken interpreting these results. CONCLUSION: SMCSO (43-256 mg kg-1 BW day-1) does not ameliorate metabolic syndrome features in high-fat fed mice. Substantial knowledge gaps remain. Further studies should administer SMCSO separately (i.e., gavage), with metabolic studies exploring tissue levels to better understand its physiological action.

Background: Fruits and vegetables (F&V) play a vital role in promoting health and preventing diseases. Numerous studies have demonstrated the association between F&V consumption and reduced risks of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mortality. Despite the high priority of public health in promoting F&V intake, Chinese immigrants in Canada often fall below national guidelines in their consumption. Understanding the factors influencing F&V intake in this community is crucial for developing effective interventions. Methods: This study used an applied ethnographic research approach to gain insight into the enablers and barriers that influence F&V intake among Chinese-Canadian adults in Richmond, BC. Semi-structured interviews and 'photovoice' group sessions were conducted to gather qualitative data from community participants and health care providers (HCPs). Results: The research identified four key themes: (1) Cultural differences around how vegetables are perceived, consumed and prepared; (2) Motivators and strategies for increasing vegetable and fruit intake; (3) Lack of culturally relevant dietary education and resources; and (4) Importance of value in vegetable/fruit-related decisions. Participants showed a strong preference for the traditional Eastern diet, with cost of food and lack of knowledge about Western vegetables acting as barriers to dietary diversity. The study also highlighted the need for culturally tailored educational resources to effectively promote F&V consumption. Conclusion: By adopting a multi-modal approach, incorporating both interviews and 'photovoice' sessions, this research provided comprehensive insights into the participants' perspectives and experiences related to F&V intake. Understanding these factors can guide the development of culturally appropriate interventions to increase F&V consumption among Chinese-Canadian adults in Richmond, BC, and potentially improve their overall health and well-being. Future studies should consider the heterogeneity within the Chinese immigrant population and target a more balanced representation of age groups to further enhance our understanding of F&V intake patterns in this community.

The purpose of this research work is to evaluate the degree of eight heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, and Ni) contamination and health risks of three regularly consumed vegetables (papaya, bottle gourd, and esculent) near one of Bangladesh's busiest roadways, the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. The heavy metal concentrations in 45 vegetable samples were analyzed using an atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). These samples were collected from five different sampling sites based on various land use patterns adjacent to the highway. The average concentrations (mg/kg) of Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, and Ni were found to be 9.86, 246.8, 16.9, 28.0, 9.02, and 2.02, respectively, for papaya; 14.9, 281.2, 387.6, 49.0, 10.1, and 2.92, respectively, for bottle gourd; and 17.6, 183.4, 107.2, 80.7, 7.98, and 2.34, respectively, for esculent. The mean concentrations of Cr, Zn, and Mn in papaya, bottle gourd, and esculent were higher than the acceptable limit. Correlation analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between Fe-Cu, Zn-Fe, Cu-Fe, and Fe-Zn in papaya; Cu-Zn, Fe-Cr, Zn-Ni, and Cr-Fe in bottle gourd; and Mn-Cr, Mn-Ni, Mn-Fe, and Cr-Ni in esculent, thereby indicating their common anthropogenic sources like agricultural activities, waste from the commercial area, filling station, and vehicular emissions. Health risk assessment through target hazard quotient (THQ) revealed the highest THQ of 9.52 for Cr in bottle gourd, which poses a high non-carcinogenic health risk to the localities upon the intake of these contaminated vegetables. Target cancer risk (TCR) was found to be highest for Cr in papaya (0.013) and bottle gourd (0.014). TCR trends were found for Cr in the following order: bottle gourd > esculent > papaya. This study contributed the greatest concern for both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health impacts through ingesting contaminated vegetables.

The current review examines the state of knowledge and research on machine learning (ML) applications in horticultural production and the potential for predicting fresh produce losses and waste. Recently, ML has been increasingly applied in horticulture for efficient and accurate operations. Given the health benefits of fresh produce and the need for food and nutrition security, efficient horticultural production and postharvest management are important. This review aims to assess the application of ML in preharvest and postharvest horticulture and the potential of ML in reducing postharvest losses and waste by predicting their magnitude, which is crucial for management practices and policymaking in loss and waste reduction. The review starts by assessing the application of ML in preharvest horticulture. It then presents the application of ML in postharvest handling and processing, and lastly, the prospects for its application in postharvest loss and waste quantification. The findings revealed that several ML algorithms perform satisfactorily in classification and prediction tasks. Based on that, there is a need to further investigate the suitability of more models or a combination of models with a higher potential for classification and prediction. Overall, the review suggested possible future directions for research related to the application of ML in postharvest losses and waste quantification.

Introduction: School feeding programs are important for ensuring food security and promoting child health and development, particularly in low-income countries. In view of this importance, it is possible to increase the quality of these meals by diversifying the vegetables offered and incorporating underutilized plants to improve dietary diversity and nutritional quality into school meals. Methods: This study was carried out using the action research methodology following the implementation and development of the "Inova na Horta" project in the city of Jundiaí, São Paulo, Brazil. The project was based on the existing and functioning physical and organizational structure of a municipal organic farm. Vegetables were selected from among 210 non-conventional species and varieties, which were further selected for continuous production based on 8 nutritional, culinary and cultivation criteria. Results: Thirty-four vegetables were selected for continuous cultivation and provisions to the school kitchens. Nine tons of vegetables were produced and provided to 90 municipal schools from 2020-2023. Leafy vegetables accounted for most the production, with a total weight of 6441 kg corresponding to 71.6% of the total harvest. Kitchen teams were trained throughout the project duration. Discussion: The feasibility of the production and culinary use of 34 biodiverse, nutrient-rich and underutilized food vegetables for school meals was demonstrated. The selected vegetables are nutrient-rich and contain higher amounts of minerals and proteins than the control vegetables (conventional vegetables), thus complementing several nutrients in school meals. This methodology can be replicated by municipalities of various sizes as a public policy of food and nutritional security associated with the valorization of local biodiversity.

CONTEXT: The associations of vegetable and potato intakes with type 2 diabetes (T2D) appear to be nuanced, depending on vegetable types and preparation method, respectively. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the associations of total vegetable, vegetable subgroup, and potato intakes with 1) markers of T2D at baseline and 2) incident T2D cumulative over a 12-year follow-up period in Australian adults. METHODS: Using data from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study, intakes of vegetables and potatoes were assessed via a food frequency questionnaire at baseline. Associations between vegetable intake and 1) fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-hour post load plasma glucose (PLG), updated homeostasis model assessment of ß-cell function (HOMA2-%ß), HOMA2 of insulin sensitivity (HOMA2-%S), and fasting insulin levels at baseline and 2) cumulative incident T2D at the end of 12-year follow-up were examined using generalized linear and Cox proportional hazards models, respectively. RESULTS: In total, 8,009 participants were included having median age of 52 years, and vegetable intake of 132 g/day. Higher intake of total vegetable, green leafy, yellow/orange/red, and moderate intakes of cruciferous vegetables was associated with lower PLG. Additionally, higher green leafy vegetable intake was associated with lower HOMA2-%ß and serum insulin. Conversely, higher potato fries/chips intakes were associated with higher FPG, HOMA2-%ß, serum insulin, and lower HOMA2-%S. Participants with moderate cruciferous vegetables intake had a 25% lower risk of T2D at the end of 12 years follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: A higher intake of vegetables, particularly green leafy vegetables, may improve while consuming potato fries/chips, but not potatoes prepared in a healthy way, may worsen glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. Our findings suggest a nuanced relationship between vegetable subgroups and their impact on glucose tolerance.

The management of food fermentation is still largely based on empirical knowledge, as the dynamics of microbial communities and the underlying metabolic networks that produce safe and nutritious products remain beyond our understanding. Although these closed ecosystems contain relatively few taxa, they have not yet been thoroughly characterized with respect to how their microbial communities interact and dynamically evolve. However, with the increased availability of metataxonomic data sets on different fermented vegetables, it is now possible to gain a comprehensive understanding of the microbial relationships that structure plant fermentation. In this study, we applied a network-based approach to the integration of public metataxonomic 16S data sets targeting different fermented vegetables throughout time. Specifically, we aimed to explore, compare, and combine public 16S data sets to identify shared associations between amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) obtained from independent studies. The workflow includes steps for searching and selecting public time-series data sets and constructing association networks of ASVs based on co-abundance metrics. Networks for individual data sets are then integrated into a core network, highlighting significant associations. Microbial communities are identified based on the comparison and clustering of ASV networks using the "stochastic block model" method. When we applied this method to 10 public data sets (including a total of 931 samples) targeting five varieties of vegetables with different sampling times, we found that it was able to shed light on the dynamics of vegetable fermentation by characterizing the processes of community succession among different bacterial assemblages. IMPORTANCE: Within the growing body of research on the bacterial communities involved in the fermentation of vegetables, there is particular interest in discovering the species or consortia that drive different fermentation steps. This integrative analysis demonstrates that the reuse and integration of public microbiome data sets can provide new insights into a little-known biotope. Our most important finding is the recurrent but transient appearance, at the beginning of vegetable fermentation, of amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) belonging to Enterobacterales and their associations with ASVs belonging to Lactobacillales. These findings could be applied to the design of new fermented products.

Different vegetable species and topsoils were collected from different urban gardens of Seville, Cordoba, and Huelva (South Spain) and from two small towns in a mining area (Riotinto), together with topsoil close to the plants. The concentration of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (As, B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, and Zn) was evaluated in edible plant parts and in the soils. The same species were also purchased from Seville local markets and from a peri-urban area (domestic garden in a rural area) and also analyzed. Plant/soil pollution relation was studied and human health risk was assessed by different parameters. Soils of urban gardens from the mining area were more contaminated with As, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn in comparison with other locations, and generally, soils from cities showed higher values of As, Pb, and Zn than the peri-urban ones. The mean concentration of almost all potentially toxic elements was higher in leafy than in fruiting and bulbous species. Arsenic, Cd, and Pb concentrations were below health-based guidance values in all vegetables except Cd in one sample in the peri-urban area. In general, PTEs concentration in vegetables from city urban gardens did not exceed the one found in market vegetables for almost all studied elements, except in lettuce for almost elements. The hazard quotient (HQ) values were lower than the unit for all PTEs in plant species from the studied gardens, as well as the hazard index (HI), indicating that consumption of these vegetables can be considered safe and without risk to human health. Also, cancer risk values for As were below the established limits in all vegetables from the studied urban gardens, including those from the As-contaminated soils in the mining area.

A real-time loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for the detection of Bremia lactucae, the causal pathogen of Lettuce Downy Mildew (LDM), was developed and validated to aid in-field detection of airborne inoculum. Assay specificity was confirmed against a range of other pathogenic oomycete and fungal spp and sensitivity of the assay for the detection of DNA extracted from sporangia was evaluated. The B. lactucae LAMP assay reliably detected DNA equivalent to 1 spore/reaction (16.7 pg DNA/reaction). Following extraction of DNA from rotorod air-samplers to which sporangial suspensions were added, the assay reliably detected 25 sporangia/rotorod. Detection of airborne inoculum of B. lactucae collected through the season from air-samplers deployed in field plots infected with B. lactucae and also in commercial lettuce fields in Scotland over two growing seasons was assessed. The method can be deployed on samples collected from commercial lettuce production to inform disease management strategies and limit the use of unecessary prophylactic pesticide applications.

People with substance use disorders often have unhealthy diets, high in sweets and processed foods but low in nutritious items like fruits and vegetables, increasing noncommunicable disease risks. This study investigates healthy eating perceptions and barriers among individuals with opioid use disorder undergoing opioid agonist therapy. Interviews with 14 participants at opioid agonist therapy clinics in Western Norway, using a semi-structured guide and systematic text condensation for analysis, reveal that most participants view their diet as inadequate and express a desire to improve for better health. Barriers to healthy eating included oral health problems, smoking habits, and limited social relations, while economic factors were less of a concern for the participants. Participants did find healthy eating easier when they were in social settings. This study underscores the importance of understanding and addressing these barriers and facilitators to foster healthier eating patterns in this population, potentially enhancing overall health and well-being.

The preservation of fresh-cut fruits and vegetables has attracted attention to the shelf-life reduction caused by high humidity. Herein, alginate/copper ions cross-linking, in-situ growth and self-assembly techniques of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were utilized to prepare a moisture responsive hydrogel bead (HKUST-1@ALG). As the multistage porous structure formation, tea tree essential oil (TTO) load capacity in hydrogel bead (TTO-HKUST-1@ALG) was increased from 6.1% to 21.6%. TTO-HKUST-1@ALG had excellent moisture response performance, and the release rates of TTO increased from 33.89% to 70.98% with moisture increasing from 45% to 95%. Besides, TTO-HKUST-1@ALG exhibited excellent antimicrobial, antioxidant capacity, and biocompatibility. During storage, TTO-HKUST-1@ALG effectively improved the cell membrane integrity by maintaining the balance of reactive oxygen species metabolism. The degradation of cell wall structure and tissue softening were delayed by inhibiting the cell wall-degrading enzymes activity. Briefly, TTO-HKUST-1@ALG improved the storage quality and extended shelf-life of fresh-cut pineapple, which was a promising preservative.

Urban agriculture is common in fertile river floodplains of many developing countries. However, there is a risk of contamination in highly polluted regions. This study quantifies health risks associated with the consumption of vegetables grown in the floodplain of the urban river 'Yamuna' in the highly polluted yet data-scarce megacity Delhi, India. Six trace elements are analyzed in five kinds of vegetable samples. Soil samples from the cultivation area are also analyzed for elemental contamination. Ni, Mn, and Co are observed to be higher in leafy vegetables than others. Fruit and inflorescence vegetables are found to have higher concentrations of Cr, Pb, and Zn as compared to root vegetables. Transfer Factor indicates that Cr and Co have the highest and least mobility, respectively. Vegetable Pollution Index indicates that contamination levels follow as Cr > Ni > Pb > Zn. Higher Metal Pollution Index of leafy and inflorescence vegetables than root and fruit vegetables indicate that atmospheric deposition is the predominant source. Principal Component Analysis indicates that Pb and Cr have similar sources and patterns in accumulation. Among the analyzed vegetables, radish may pose a non-carcinogenic risk to the age group of 1-5 year. Carcinogenic risk is found to be potentially high due to Ni and Cr accumulation. Consumption of leafy vegetables was found to have relatively less risk than other vegetables due to lower Cr accumulation. Remediation of Cr and Ni in floodplain soil and regular monitoring of elemental contamination is a priority.

The present study focused on the optimization of the QuEChERS extraction method for the determination of 61 pesticide residues and associated health risk assessment in 144 samples of commonly consumed vegetables, viz., eggplant, cabbage, green chilli, okra, and tomato. The samples were collected between January and April 2022 from three different districts within Gujarat, India. The QuEChERS method was optimized and utilized for the extraction of samples. The samples were analyzed by UHPLC-q-TOF/MS and GC-MS/MS. The modified QuEChERS method was successfully validated, and the obtained results were satisfactory as per the 2021 SANTE guidelines. The residue analysis of the vegetable samples showed that about 4% of total samples contained single pesticide residues. Pesticide residues below the quantitation limit (BQL) were observed in eggplant, cabbage, and okra samples. In total, 15.62% (n = 5) samples of green chilli showed the presence of pesticides such as azoxystrobin, bifenthrin, cypermethrin, fenpropathrin, and propargite whereas 3% (n = 1) tomato samples contained cyfluthrin. In total, 97.22% of the samples had residues that were below the European Union Maximum Residue Limit (EU MRL). Two samples of green chilli had pesticide residues above EU MRL. The Hazard Index (HI) and Hazard Quotient (HQ) were used to assess the health risks associated with green chilli and tomato consumption. The HI and HQ values for adolescents and adults were found to be less than 1. The modified QuEChERS method was found to be easy and effective and can be implemented for routine sample analysis. The study revealed the presence of pesticide residues in tomato and green chilli samples. Further, the outcome provided information pertaining to current pesticide status, concluding that consumption of these commodities is unlikely to pose any health risk, though long-term monitoring studies focusing on dietary health risk assessment must be initiated.

Introduction: This research investigates trends pertaining to the prevalence of low fruit and vegetable consumption among the labor force population in China. The study considered data derived from four nationally representative cross-sectional surveys. Methods: The data under review for this study was derived from the China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance (CCDRFS) carried out in 2010, 2013, 2015, and 2018, correspondingly. We utilized a food frequency questionnaire to evaluate the quantity and frequency of fruit and vegetable consumption. The estimated prevalence of low fruit and vegetable consumption was calculated for each survey, while considering factors such as sex, age, location, and socioeconomic status (SES). Participants' SES was ascertained via latent class analysis, serving to identify distinct classes based on criteria such as education, occupation, and household income per capita. Logistic regression was deployed to determine the statistical significance of trends. Results: From 2010 to 2018, there was a notable increase in the average daily consumption of vegetables and fruits among the working population, rising from 418.6 g/day to 491.8 g/day (P<0.01 for trend). During the same period, the prevalence of low fruit and vegetable intake declined from 51.1% to 43.5% [P<0.001 for trend; -1.6% average annual percent change (AAPC)]. This downward trend was prevalent across genders, however, certain subgroups of adults (e.g., those living in rural areas or those of low SES) saw stable consumption levels throughout this period (P>0.05 for trend). Conclusion: Over the past nine years, there has been a notable decline in the prevalence of low fruit and vegetable consumption among the labor force population in China. Moreover, the comparatively deficient intake of fruits and vegetables evident among individuals of lower SES warrants further attention.

Projected changes in climate patterns, increase of weather extreme, water scarcity, and land degradation are going to challenge agricultural production and food security. Currently, studies concerning effects of climate change on agriculture mainly focus on yield and quality of cereal crops. In contrast, there has been little attention on the effects of environmental changes on vegetables that are necessary and key nutrition component for human beings, but quite sensitive to these climatic changes. Therefore, we reviewed the main changes of environmental factors under the current scenario as well as the impacts of these factors on the physiological responses and nutritional alteration of vegetables and the key findings based on modelling. The gaps between cereal crops and vegetables were pinpointed and the actions to take in the future were proposed. The review will enhance our understanding concerning the effects of environmental changes on production, physiological responses, nutrition, and modelling of vegetable plants.

Root-knot nematodes (RKN, Meloidogyne spp.) are some of the most economically important and common plant parasitic nematodes in North Carolina (NC) cropping systems. Soil samples collected from fields planted with crops rotated with sweetpotato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] in 39 NC counties in 2015-2018 were processed at the NC Nematode Assay Laboratory. The occurrence of second-stage juvenile (J2) RKN populations was examined based on collection year, month, county, and previous planted crop. The highest number of RKN positive samples originated from Cumberland (53%), Sampson (48%), and Johnston (48%) counties. The highest average RKN population density was detected in Sampson (147 J2/500 cm3 soil) and Nash (135 J2/500 cm3 soil) counties, while Wayne (7 J2/500 cm3 soil) and Greene (11 J2/500 cm3 soil) counties had the lowest average RKN population density. Meloidogyne enterolobii is a new invasive species that is impacting sweetpotato growers of NC. The host status of a NC population of M. enterolobii, the guava-root knot nematode, was determined by examining eggs per gram of fresh root (ER) and the final nematode egg population divided by the initial population egg count (reproductive factor, RF) in greenhouse experiments. This included eighteen vegetable, field, cover crops and weed species. The tomato 'Rutgers' was used as a susceptible control. Cabbage 'Stonehead', pepper 'Red bull', and watermelon 'Charleston gray' and 'Fascination' were hosts and had similar mean ER values to the positive control, ranging from 64 to 18,717. Among field crops, cotton, soybean 'P5018RX', and tobacco were hosts with ER values that ranged from 185 to 706. Members of the Poaceae family such as sweet corn (Zea mays) and sudangrass (Sorghum x drummondii) were non-hosts to M. enterolobii and the mean ER values ranged from 1.85 to 7. The peanut 'Tifguard' and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) also had lower ER values than the vegetable hosts. Growers should consider planting less susceptible or non-hosts such as peanut, sudangrass, sweet corn, and winter wheat in 2-3 year crop rotations to lower populations of this invasive nematode.

Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is an economically important crop in China, and more than 30 viruses have been reported to infect tobacco (Yin et al. 2022). In July 2022, we observed interveinal necrosis on tobacco leaves in fields in Sichuan Province (N 27.9172, E 105.6662) (Fig. 1). Total RNA was isolated from multiple leaves of one plant using an RNAprep Pure Polysaccharide Polyphenol Plant Total RNA Extraction Kit (TIANGEN, Beijing, China). Total RNAs were pooled, and a TruSeq Stranded Total RNA with RiboZero Gold Kit (Illumina, San Diego, CA, USA) was used to eliminate ribosomal RNA. An RNA-Seq library was constructed using VAHTS Universal V6 RNA-seq Library Prep (Nanjing Vazyme, China). High-throughput sequencing was performed on the Illumina DNBseq platform (BGI-ShenZhen, China), which yielded 20,102,087 reads with an average length of 150 nt (total size >6 Gb). Unaligned reads were assembled de novo using SPAdes (Bankevich et al. 2012). Contigs with length ≥200 nt were subjected to local BLASTn and BLASTx analyses against the GenBank nt and nr databases, respectively (Wang et al. 2022). A total of 23 contigs were identified through BLASTx (e-value cut-off = 10 -3), ranging from 631 to 1555 bp long, with 82% to 96% coverage to partial genomic sequences of pepper chlorosis-associated virus (PepCaV-Higashitsuno_2021; Accessions: LC719619 to LC719621) and one contig (6459 bp) with 99% similarity to tobacco mosaic virus (Accession: OP525281) isolate DSMZ PV-0109 from Germany. The complete genome sequence of PepCaV was obtained using primers based on the assembled contigs. The 5'- and 3'-terminal regions of the RNA genome were obtained by 5'- and 3'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends. These amplicons were cloned using the pEASY-Blunt Zero Cloning Kit (TRANSGEN, Nangjing, China) and sequenced by Sanger sequencing. Complete genome sequences of tripartite PepCaV from tobacco samples were 7697, 1808, and 1557 nucleotides long (Accession: OR451987 to OR451989) and showed genome organization typical of the genus Ophiovirus in the family Aspiviridae. The complete sequences of RNA1, RNA2 and RNA3 genome segments shared 92.36%, 90.43%, and 95.24%, nucleotide sequence identities, respectively, with the isolate PepCaV-Higashitsuno_2021 pepper isolate (Accession: LC719619 to LC719621) (Shimomoto et al. 2023), but PepCaV has not been reported to infect N. tabacum. In June 2023, 10 plants collected from each place of Macheng (N 27.9094, E 105.6740), Xiangyang (N 28.0936, E 105.6249) and Moni (N 27.8899, E 105.5936) showing interveinal necrosis symptoms were tested using RT-PCR using PepCaV-MP610-F (5'-TGTTCTCTGCTATGCGGTTG -3') and PepCaV-MP610-R (5'-AGCAATCTCGCACCTGAAGT-3') to product 610bp amplicon. Twenty-five tobacco plants were positive for PepCaV. Single sequence from each location was submitted to GenBank (Accession: PP728631 to PP728633). Sap extracts from the original field leaf samples collected from Sichuan Province were used to mechanically inoculate tobacco plants (10 plants) at the four-leaf stage. After 7 days, leaf samples were tested using RT-PCR assay specific to PepCaV and TMV while samples were positive only for TMV but failed to transmit PepCaV by mechanical inoculation. According to previous literature, ophioviruses may be transmitted though soilborne fungus (Jeong et al. 2014). Further research is needed to understand the transmission, epidemiology, and pathological properties of the PepCaV. To our knowledge, this is the first report documenting natural PepCaV infection of tobacco plants in China, providing a scientific basis for PepCaV infection control in tobacco plantations.

This study focused on the osmotic dehydration (OD) of ready-to-eat spinach leaves combined with the pulsed electric field (PEF) pre-treatment. Untreated and PEF-treated (0.6 kV/cm, 0-200 pulses) spinach leaves were osmotically dehydrated at room temperature for up to 120 min. The application of PEF (0.6 kV/20 pulses) prior to OD (60% glycerol, 25 °C, 60 min) lowered water activity (aw = 0.891) while achieving satisfactory product acceptability (total sensory hedonic scoring of 8). During the storage of the product (at 4, 8, 12, and 20 °C for up to 30 d), a significant reduction in total microbial count evolution was observed (9.7 logCFU/g for the untreated samples vs. 5.1 logCFU/g for the PEF-OD-treated samples after 13 d of storage at 4 °C). The selection of these PEF and OD treatment conditions enabled the extension of the product shelf life by up to 33 d under chilled storage. Osmotically treated spinach could find application in ready-to-eat salad products with an extended shelf life, which is currently not possible due to the high perishability of the specific plant tissue.

BACKGROUND: Fruits and vegetables contain abundant amounts of antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin C, α-carotene, and ß-carotene. Few prospective observational studies have investigated the effects of fruit and vegetable intake on the risk of dementia, and the results are inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to examine associations between fruit and vegetable intake and the risk of disabling dementia. METHODS: We conducted a follow-up survey within the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study involving 42,643 individuals aged 50-79 y at baseline (2000-2003). Dietary fruit and vegetable intakes and related antioxidant vitamin intakes (i.e., α-carotene, ß-carotene, and vitamin C) were determined using a food frequency questionnaire. The diagnosis of disabling dementia was made based on the daily living disability status related to dementia under the Japanese long-term care insurance program from 2006 to 2016. Hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for disabling dementia were estimated using area-stratified Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for potential confounding factors. RESULTS: A total of 4994 cases of disabling dementia were recorded. We observed an inverse association between total fruit and vegetable intake and the risk of dementia among males and females: the multivariate hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for the highest compared with lowest quartiles of intake were 0.87 (0.76, 0.99) (P- trend = 0.05) among males and 0.85 (0.76, 0.94) (P- trend = 0.006) among females. Among antioxidant vitamins, vitamin C intake was inversely associated with the risk of dementia among males and females: the multivariate hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for the highest compared with lowest quartiles of intake were 0.71 (0.61, 0.84) (P- trend < 0.0001) among males, and 0.76 (0.67, 0.86) (P- trend < 0.0001) among females. CONCLUSIONS: Fruit and vegetable intake and dietary intake of vitamin C may contribute to reducing the risk of disabling dementia among males and females.
