RESUMEN

The irreproducibility in scientific research has become a critical issue. Despite the essential role of rigorous methodology in constructing a scientific article, more than half of publications, on average, are considered non-reproducible. The implications of this irreproducibility extend to reliability problems, hindering progress in technological production and resulting in substantial financial losses. In the context of laboratory animal research, this work emphasizes the importance of choosing an appropriate experimental model within the 3R's principle (Refine, Reduce, Replace). This study specifically addresses a deficiency in data specification in scientific articles, revealing inadequacies in the description of crucial details, such as environmental conditions, diet, and experimental procedures. For this purpose, 124 articles from journals with relevant impact factors were analyzed, conducting a survey of data considered important for the reproducibility of studies. Important flaws in the presentation of data were identified in most of the articles evaluated. The results of this study highlight the need to improve the description of essential information, standardizing studies, and ensuring the reproducibility of experiments in areas such as metabolism, immunity, hormones, stress, among others, to enhance the reliability and reproduction of experimental results, aligning with international guidelines such as ARRIVE and PREPARE.

RESUMEN

Writing as we know it today is a relatively new development in the cultural history of humanity. More current still is the massiveness of the literacy of the population. Since the origins of psychiatry, writing has been an inherent part of it in the medical literature, but it has also been a tool applied in practice in various formats, both for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. However, compared to the classic communication tools, such as speech, and in child psychiatry, also play and drawing, writing seems to have been relegated. In this bibliographical research, that would not have precedents of its kind, a historical overview of the subject was carried out from the emergence of psychiatry as a specialty to the present day; where events such as the World Wars, the evolution of the concept of disability or the COVID-19 pandemic seem to have played a key role in delimiting variables that characterize at least three historical periods and presuming a fourth in full gestation. The technological support with which it is written and the use and format given to writing were the main variables of the different periods. Being a time of very high demand in Mental Health, challenging in its accessibility and the massive use of writing from information technologies, this research would represent a significant contribution to the development of writing as a tool for the practice of psychiatry and mental health.

A correlation is observed between university students who structure complete sentences when they write and the ability to present their ideas clearly and precisely (p-value 0.0021), as well as to adequately organize the elements of an explanatory-expository text, with the knowledge of textual structures (p-value 0.0248). It is important to make university students aware of textual planning in order to produce quality writing. Higher Education Institutions should design and implement educational programs that promote academic writing in the curriculum as part of the integral formation of students, since it is an indispensable factor in the world of work.

Due to the recurring difficulties that are observed in this incorporation, it seeks to categorize these problems and determine their frequency of appearance. The analysis material is made up of a sample of eight hundred exams belonging to two initial courses that were dictated under the virtual and face-to-face modality. This study on the one hand, reports on various problems that arise in citation practices and that involve both aspects that can be included in the formal level and those that go beyond it. On the other, it shows that the distribution of these ruptures is not always equivalent. Some of these transgressions could be attributed to the encounter between the first-year students with academic conventions alien to their previous experiences; however many of them show students with little training in reading and writing.

INTRODUCTION: Both the teaching of writing and the way it is evaluated constitute major challenges in higher education. The use of evaluative strategies can help remediate deficiencies in writing skills by being not only an exhaustive and didactic evaluation resource, but also a guide for the development of the text itself. OBJECTIVE: Develop evaluative methodologies to improve aspects of form and content in the writing of academic texts in Nursing. METHODOLOGY: The project had three phases that considered the construction of two instruments (phase 1), their application in an academic text (thesis report) and respective adjustments (phase 2), and, finally, the evaluation of said application. RESULTS: Two analytical headings were obtained (quantitative methodology and qualitative methodology), consisting of the items of FORM (writing aspects) and CONTENT (research aspects), respectively, which were applied three times to the text to evaluate its progress. Improvements were observed in the overall rating, in the areas of coherence and cohesion in FORM, and in the theoretical framework, results, and methodology in CONTENT. DISCUSSION: Analytical rubrics are a very useful tool when evaluating academic texts. They are extremely comprehensive instruments because they look at the process as a whole, serving not only as an evaluative tool, but also as a training opportunity for students, providing a guide for the development of academic writing skills.

RESUMEN

IMPORTANCE: The scientific community debates Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT)-3.5's article quality, authorship merit, originality, and ethical use in scientific writing. OBJECTIVES: Assess GPT-3.5's ability to craft the background section of critical care clinical research questions compared to medical researchers with H-indices of 22 and 13. DESIGN: Observational cross-sectional study. SETTING: Researchers from 20 countries from six continents evaluated the backgrounds. PARTICIPANTS: Researchers with a Scopus index greater than 1 were included. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: In this study, we generated a background section of a critical care clinical research question on "acute kidney injury in sepsis" using three different methods: researcher with H-index greater than 20, researcher with H-index greater than 10, and GPT-3.5. The three background sections were presented in a blinded survey to researchers with an H-index range between 1 and 96. First, the researchers evaluated the main components of the background using a 5-point Likert scale. Second, they were asked to identify which background was written by humans only or with large language model-generated tools. RESULTS: A total of 80 researchers completed the survey. The median H-index was 3 (interquartile range, 1-7.25) and most (36%) researchers were from the Critical Care specialty. When compared with researchers with an H-index of 22 and 13, GPT-3.5 was marked high on the Likert scale ranking on main background components (median 4.5 vs. 3.82 vs. 3.6 vs. 4.5, respectively; p < 0.001). The sensitivity and specificity to detect researchers writing versus GPT-3.5 writing were poor, 22.4% and 57.6%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: GPT-3.5 could create background research content indistinguishable from the writing of a medical researcher. It was marked higher compared with medical researchers with an H-index of 22 and 13 in writing the background section of a critical care clinical research question.

The collection of indubitable samples when a corpus of handwriting is taken from a person is an extremely important process in handwriting expertise. There are parameters by which handwriting experts are governed when making such a writing corpus, which generally focus on the position of the scribe, writing speed, spontaneity, number of samples, among others. However, the scribe may try to alter or manipulate it in different ways, usually in an attempt to hinder the expert's work. Thus, there are several elements that indicate to a handwriting expert that an attempt is being made to modify the handwriting or signature during this process from a technical point of view. In this sense, the aim of this study is to highlight the importance of compiling a handwriting corpus with all the guarantees that it can be treated as an unquestionable document, as well as highlighting the importance of the expert having the ability to confirm the scribe's sincerity, both through the analysis of their handwriting (graphology) and through the analysis of their non-verbal communication at the time of writing. A qualitative methodology has been used, using the documentary information technique, by means of the collection of information for study and analysis, as well as monographs, study manuals and scientific articles.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: Scientific writing in English is a daunting task for non-native English speakers. The challenges of writing in a foreign language are evident in the scientific literature where texts by non-native English-speaking scientists tend to be less clear and succinct, contain grammatical errors, and are often rejected by prestigious journals. METHODS: We conducted a non-systematic review of the most recent literature using the terms "Artificial Intelligence," "Scientific Writing," and "Non-English Speaking" to create a narrative review. RESULTS: Artificial intelligence can be a solution to improve scientific writing, especially for non-native English-speaking scientists. Artificial intelligence can assist in the search for pertinent scientific papers, generate summaries, and help with the writing of different sections of the manuscript, including the abstract, introduction, methods, results, and discussion. Artificial intelligence-based programs can correct grammatical errors and improve writing style, both of which are particularly helpful for non-native English speakers. Two artificial intelligence programs that can help with the search for pertinent scientific papers on the internet are Elicit and ResearchRabbit. Scispace Copilot can be used to summarize the retrieved reference. The artificial intelligence software programs such as Grammarly and Paperpal can correct grammatical and spelling errors, while ChatGPT can also restructure sentences and paragraphs, reword text, and suggest appropriate words and phrases. CONCLUSION: Overall, artificial intelligence can be an effective tool to improve the clarity, style, and coherence of scientific writing, helping non-native English-speaking scientists to communicate their research more effectively.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the quality of prescription writing in the context of public primary health care. BACKGROUND: Prescription errors are one of the leading patient safety problems in primary care and can be caused by errors in therapeutic decisions or in the quality of prescription writing. METHODS: Cross-sectional observational study conducted in a municipality in Northeastern Brazil. The assessment instrument (including 13 indicators and one composite indicator) was applied to a representative sample of drug prescriptions from the 24 Family Health Teams providing Primary Health Care in the municipality, dispensed in January 2021. Estimates of compliance and their 95% confidence intervals and graphical analysis of frequencies are assessed globally and stratified by dispensing units and prescribers. FINDINGS: The average composite prescription writing quality on a 0-100 scale was 60.2 (95% CI 57.8-62.6). No quality criteria had 100% compliance. The highest compliance rates were found for 'frequency of administration' (98.9%) and 'identification of the prescriber' (98.9%). On the other hand, 'recorded information on allergy' (0.0%), 'patient's date of birth' (1.7%), 'nonpharmacological recommendations' (1.7%), and 'guidance on the use of the drug' (25%) were the indicators with lower compliance, contributing to 69% of the noncompliances found. The type and frequency of the errors in the quality of prescription writing uncovered in this study confirm the continuing need to tackle this problem to improve patient safety. The results identify priority aspects for interventions and further studies on the quality of prescription writing in the context of Primary Health Care in Brazil.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study employed bibliometric analysis to ascertain the research focus areas among a group of Mexican physicians affiliated with the Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE). ISSSTE, a healthcare institution catering to a diverse range of diseases, offers a distinctive perspective on the investigated specialties within the realm of health. The primary objective was to identify knowledge gaps in medical care disciplines through a comprehensive examination of scholarly publications. METHODS: We retrieved Scopus papers affiliated with "ISSSTE" and saved them as .CSV files. Subsequently, we employed VOSviewer, biblioshiny, and bibliometrix for bibliometric analysis. This enabled us to identify prominent institutions, prolific authors, highly cited researchers, and their respective affiliations. RESULTS: Our analysis identified 2063 publications; the specialty internal medicine accounted for the greatest proportion with 831 publications. Original papers accounted for 82% of the total, with 52% of them being written in Spanish. The majority of scientific output, 92%, originated from Mexico City. The annual production has steadily increased since 2010, peaking in 2021 with over 200 publications. However, papers on prevalent conditions, such as metabolic syndrome, received limited citations, and the L0 index (percentage of uncited items) for all papers is close to 60%. Scopus mislabeled one affiliation, and some cases show a low paper-to-author ratio of 0.5 Discussion: Additional concerns, such as honorary authorship due to excessive authors per paper, and the underlying causes of low citation rates in Mexican publications, warrant further examination. Moreover, our research emphasizes the urgency of bolstering research and development funding, which was consistently below 0.5% of GDP for the past four decades, falling short of legal mandates and international benchmarks. We endorse the establishment of robust research collectives in Latin America to address these challenges, foster regional scientific output, and transition from knowledge consumers to knowledge producers, thereby reducing dependence on foreign technology.

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: The treatment of autism was a challenge since its description, especially in non-speaking (NS) or minimally speaking (MS) people, who receive little attention from scientific literature and represent a high health care cost. The year 2022 marked the 25th anniversary of an approach to NS/MS autism redesigned in Argentina and carried out through synchronous typewriting (Phaedrus Approach). The objective of this work was to review and describe for the first time the clinical changes (CC) after intervention. METHODS: A systematic descriptive review of the CC reports was carried out, based on a series of cases addressed with the intervention under study. RESULTS: The reports of the 10 most frequent CC in the sample were described, which appeared on average after 13.8 months of treatment. Each case presented 7.5 CC, with similar results between diagnoses prior to treatment and with some differences in favor of female gender, those under 10 years of age at the start of treatment, and NS people. While 100% acceded to independent typewriting, 71% achieved or improved speech afterwards. DISCUSSION: The 7 most frequent CC represent key aspects of autism treatment. Although more studies are required, the results are very promising and represent a substantial contribution to the scientific evidence. This approach could be cost-effective for NS/MS autism spectrum disorder and could be of interest for other problems at the intersection of mental health and public health.

Medical care must be supported by research that meets reliable, valid, ethical, and reproducible principles. However, an essential fraction of research carried out in the medical field is inadequately reported due to omitting relevant information when it is published. This reduces their impact and the possibility that other researchers can realize critical appraisal, thereby compromising their application within medical practice. Because of this, guidelines have been developed to reduce this problem; their purpose is to increase research reports' methodological quality, transparency, validity, and reliability. Despite their importance, incorporating these guidelines in various journals and the knowledge and use by a significant part of the medical community is limited. In this context, this article aims to synthesize the main guidelines for reporting research in medicine.
