BACKGROUND: In Australia and New Zealand, competitive selection processes for surgical specialty training programs often use a standardized curriculum vitae (CV) to assess criteria such as professional achievements. This review aims to assess the predictive validity, standardization, and implicit biases of these selection methods, as well as their implications for trainees and the diversity of surgical cohorts. METHODS: The 2023 CV scoring criteria were collected for all available specialty surgical programs in Australia and New Zealand. In 2023, each of the 11 surgical craft programs published publicly available standardized CV scoring criteria. In this study, scored items that constitute 'professional achievements' were recorded and tabulated. Observational analysis of the collected data was then conducted. RESULTS: In 2023, each of the 11 specialty surgical craft programs published publicly available structured CVs, of which 10/11 allocated points for professional achievements. Designated points for professional achievements were classified as awards, scholarships, committee positions, and prior training courses: 4/11 programs offered points for scholarships/grants, 6/11 programs offered points for academic and/or non-academic prizes, and 8/11 programs offered points for professional development courses. Observational analysis of these findings suggests that professional achievements are desired in training program applicants. CONCLUSION: Variability in medical school opportunities and inherent heterogeneity reduce the CV's efficacy, unfairly disadvantaging some applicants. Observational analysis of hence highlights the need for future research to assess potential updates in CV parameters to enhance predictive validity, reduce bias, and promote diversity.

Eduardo Alberto Slatopolsky (1934-2024), Washington University Joseph Friedman Professor Emeritus of Medicine, a prominent physician-scientist, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The impact of his research in the area of mineral and bone disorders in kidney disease has been profound for over 50 years starting in the 1960s. He was a global authority on secondary hyperparathyroidism. He was instrumental in illustrating the role of hyperphosphatemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and in developing the first reliable parathyroid hormone (PTH) assay. His research led to the utilization of calcium salts as phosphate binders replacing the toxic aluminum salts. Moreover, he illustrated the role of vascular calcifications in CKD patients, paving the way for non-calcium phosphate binders. He proposed the use of calcitriol and later vitamin D analogs in the management of secondary hyperparathyroidism, which is the current standard of care. He demonstrated the decreased expression of the calcium-sensing receptor in parathyroid tissue in CKD patients. Dr. Slatopolsky's global legacy will last for generations.

The proposed smart system for Student Performance Assessment (SPA) is a system that evaluates students' knowledge and skill attainment in a specific course by measuring their achievements of the Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs). The instructor defines the aspects, weights, and rating scale used by SPA to analyze each course. The system calculates the average of students' marks in each learning outcome and compares them with the CLO targets and scores to determine the effectiveness of the teaching and learning methods used. The system uses facts and rules extracted from the course syllabus and Bloom's Taxonomy to build its knowledge base. This paper presents the development of the SPA inference engine, which is used to find CLO targets based on the course level. The inference engine uses efficient procedures and a prediction process to determine the correct target and score, providing a reliable and understandable methodology for reasoning about the information in the knowledge base and formulating conclusions. SPA is a highly responsive and intelligent system that can be a valuable tool for measuring students' achievements. Its characteristics include high performance, reliability, and intelligibility, and its combination of cognitive systems and cognitive theory has led to remarkable progress in measuring student performance. Limitations include dependency on accurate course content and initial setup time, potential bias in CLO weight assignments, challenges in integrating SPA with existing institutional databases, the need for continuous updates to the knowledge base to reflect curriculum changes, and potential resistance from educators to adopt new technologies. Future improvements could involve adaptive learning integrations, enhanced user interfaces, and broader applicability across diverse educational settings.

The "Groupe Onco-hématologie Adolescents Jeunes Adultes" (GO-AJA) born in 2012 is a French collaborative group. It focuses on heterogeneity and unmet needs for AYA with cancer. This article highlights GO-AJA's achievements and future prospects, emphasizing its role in structuring a professional national network, improving AYAs' comprehensive care and strengthening the roles of coordinating nurses. It also covers AYA multidisciplinary tumor boards, guidelines edition, education and training. Challenges persist, including limited AYA clinical trials and territorial inequalities in care access and team resources. Future success hinges on increased medical community awareness, stakeholders investment, and European collaborations.

BACKGROUND: The disruption of health and medical education by the COVID-19 pandemic made educators question the effect of online setting on students' learning, motivation, self-efficacy and preference. In light of the health care staff shortage online scalable education seemed relevant. Reviews on the effect of online medical education called for high quality RCTs, which are increasingly relevant with rapid technological development and widespread adaption of online learning in universities. The objective of this trial is to compare standardized and feasible outcomes of an online and an onsite setting of a research course regarding the efficacy for PhD students within health and medical sciences: Primarily on learning of research methodology and secondly on preference, motivation, self-efficacy on short term and academic achievements on long term. Based on the authors experience with conducting courses during the pandemic, the hypothesis is that student preferred onsite setting is different to online setting. METHODS: Cluster randomized trial with two parallel groups. Two PhD research training courses at the University of Copenhagen are randomized to online (Zoom) or onsite (The Parker Institute, Denmark) setting. Enrolled students are invited to participate in the study. Primary outcome is short term learning. Secondary outcomes are short term preference, motivation, self-efficacy, and long-term academic achievements. Standardized, reproducible and feasible outcomes will be measured by tailor made multiple choice questionnaires, evaluation survey, frequently used Intrinsic Motivation Inventory, Single Item Self-Efficacy Question, and Google Scholar publication data. Sample size is calculated to 20 clusters and courses are randomized by a computer random number generator. Statistical analyses will be performed blinded by an external statistical expert. DISCUSSION: Primary outcome and secondary significant outcomes will be compared and contrasted with relevant literature. Limitations include geographical setting; bias include lack of blinding and strengths are robust assessment methods in a well-established conceptual framework. Generalizability to PhD education in other disciplines is high. Results of this study will both have implications for students and educators involved in research training courses in health and medical education and for the patients who ultimately benefits from this training. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Retrospectively registered at ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05736627. SPIRIT guidelines are followed.

The transformation of scientific and technological achievements is the best form of the combination of technology and the economy, and only when new technologies are transformed into commodities can they be transformed into real productive forces and exert scale effects. With the rapid development of digital finance, it has changed the operating mode of financial markets and consumer behavior. Does digital finance promote the transformation of R&D achievements? We empirically examine this question using the panel data covering 30 provinces in China from 2011 to 2021. The empirical results indicate that the development of digital finance can improve the transformation rate of R&D achievements. Additionally, we find that the role of digital finance in promoting the transformation of R&D achievements needs to be guaranteed by the level of effective financial regulation. The research conclusions are a relevant reference for the government to improve the transformation rate of scientific and technological achievements.

The pharmaceutical analysis course is a three-dimensional knowledge network that connects several courses to form a new comprehensive knowledge node involving a large knowledge system and flexible knowledge structure. In this course, the subject of chromatography covers a wide range of topics. However, because accurate content is challenging to present, the teaching effect of this subject is poor. In this work, we sought to achieve the educational purpose of establishing morality and cultivating talent, as well as the goal of training highly skilled professionals, by taking the teaching of chromatography in the pharmaceutical analysis course as an example of transforming scientific research results into teaching resources. The resources obtained are integrated into the teaching process to provide innovative and scientific research ideas to students with the aim of not only helping them understand and master technical knowledge but also exercise their ability to raise and solve problems. Furthermore, we expound on how to introduce scientific development frontiers and formulate scientific problems through curriculum design. We also describe how our strategy can promote the teaching effect and achieve teaching objectives. Based on the characteristics of rapid knowledge update and equal emphasis on theory and practice in pharmaceutical analysis, the course is designed by introducing new advances in scientific development, formulating scientific problems, and adopting question- and problem-based learning methods for teaching. The teaching effect is then evaluated through diversified assessment, student feedback, and self-evaluation. The results show that the transformation of scientific research results into teaching resources plays a significant role in stimulating students' interest in learning, improving students' ability to solve problems, and achieving curriculum objectives, all of which greatly improve the teaching effect.

Background and Objectives: In most African societies with little or no social welfare services for older adults, many parents regard their children as personal investments and security for the future. As a result, satisfaction with children's achievements may be necessary for older parents' physical and mental health. This study examined the association between satisfaction with adult children's achievements (SACA) and health outcomes (regarding somatic health, self-rated health, anxiety, and depression) in a sample of Nigerian older adults. Research Design and Methods: By using the multistage sampling technique in a cross-sectional survey, 465 older adults (mean age = 74.18 ±â€…9.42) consisting of 294 women were selected from 14 rural communities in a State in Nigeria. Data were collected using validated instruments and analyzed using multiple linear regression and multigroup analyses in SPSS AMOS. Results: High SACA was significantly associated with low somatic health problems, positive self-rated health, and low levels of anxiety and depression, even after controlling for sociodemographic factors, children's support, social engagement, and loneliness. Further analyses indicated that the relationship between SACA and depression was only significant in women and more robust in the widowed. Also, SACA was associated with somatic health among the married but not the widowed. The level of children's support was not a significant moderator. Discussion and Implications: Parents can experience positive emotions and, consequently, good health from being satisfied with their children's achievements regardless of perceived children's support. Assessing SACA may aid in better diagnoses and formulation of a more effective clinical intervention to improve the well-being of older adults in developing societies.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate how school well-being (SWB) and academic performance of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) compare to their peers on a national level using the Danish national registers. Further, we investigated the potential influence of socioeconomic status (SES). METHODS: A population-wide, register-based, cross-sectional study was performed. We compared the results of children with and without JIA in the Danish National Well-Being Questionnaire (DNWQ), the National Danish School Testing (NDST), and their ninth grade (aged approximately 16 yrs) final school marks in Danish and mathematics. The results were analyzed using adjusted ordinal logistic regression (SWB) and linear regression (tests and marks). RESULTS: In separate cohorts, we included a total of 505,340 children answering the DNWQ, 812,461 children with NDST results, and the ninth-grade final marks of 581,804 children. Of these children, 1042, 1541, and 1410, respectively, fulfilled the criteria of JIA. Children with JIA reported SWB comparable to their peers, except for the question "Do you perform well in school?" (odds ratio 0.89, 95% CI 0.81-0.99). In the NDST, the children with JIA in general did just as well as their peers. We found no differences in the ninth-grade final marks in either Danish or mathematics. Stratifying the analyses on SES showed no significant differences in the associations. CONCLUSION: Overall, children with JIA report SWB comparable to that of children without JIA and perform equally well in school as children without JIA.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a unique medical system of historic significance, holding substantial influence within China and beyond. In recent years, the efficacy of TCM in treating acute pancreatitis has been substantiated. Despite over two decades of development in this domain, a bibliometric analysis illustrating TCM's role in acute pancreatitis remains scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of findings in the field of acute pancreatitis and TCM using machine learning and text-analyzing methodologies. The intent is to provide scientific and intuitive support to researchers and clinicians. METHODS: We searched the Web of Science Core Collection database for publications and related literature from 2007 to mid-2023. Tools such as Excel, Citespace V, and Vosviewer were utilized for bibliometric analysis. That included assessing published and cited counts, co-authorship mapping, co-citation analysis, burst detection, and keyword analysis. RESULTS: The study revealed a fluctuating growth trend in the number of publications and citations since 2007. As many as 147 institutions from 13 countries, with a total of 756 authors, have published 202 papers in 76 academic journals. Sichuan University in China and Tang Wenfu have been recognized as the most influential national institution and author. The most frequently published journal is "Pancreas", while the most cited is the "World Journal of Gastroenterology". Commonly used single herbs in this field include Baicalin, Emodin, Rhubarb, and Salvia miltiorrhizae. Frequently used herbal formulations include Da chengqi decoction, Chaiqin chengqi decoction, and Qing yi decoction. Current research hotspots primarily surround concepts like hmgb1, nf-kappab, nfr2, oxidative stress, exosomes, nlrp3, pyroptosis, etc. Potential future research themes could relate to pharmacology, reducing hmgb1, inflammatory response, cell activation, Qing Yi-decoction, etc. This review holds significant guiding importance for clinical and scientific research into TCM treatment for acute pancreatitis in the future.

Atmospheric resources provide important support for human economic and social systems through their unique ecosystem service functions. Implementing the off-office auditing of atmospheric resources for leading cadres holds great strategic significance for fundamentally solve air pollution problems. Exploring the compilation of an atmospheric resource balance sheet is a necessary pre-step in the implementation of outgoing audits. In this paper, atmospheric resources are innovatively divided into atmospheric capacity resources and atmospheric quality resources from the perspective of the ecosystem service functions of atmospheric resources. The value of atmospheric resource assets is calculated by combining the environmental capacity value method and the environmental loss evaluation method. This study evaluates atmospheric ecological achievements based on the atmospheric resources balance sheet and related accounts as the data carrier and opens up the key "blocking point" of the off-office auditing of atmospheric resources. This paper takes Anhui Province as an example and applies the accounting results of the prepared atmospheric resource balance sheet to evaluate the atmospheric resource ecological achievements of leading cadres from 2016 to 2020. The results clearly reflect the ecological achievements and shortcomings of local leading cadres during their tenure.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains an enduring public health concern in Indonesia, exacerbated by its equatorial climate that fosters the proliferation of Anopheles mosquitoes. This study seeks to assess the performance of the malaria elimination programme comprehensively. METHODS: Between May and August 2022, a qualitative study was conducted in Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra Province, involving 22 healthcare professionals from diverse backgrounds. These informants were strategically chosen for their pivotal roles in providing profound insights into various facets of the malaria elimination programme. This encompasses inputs such as human resources, budgetary allocation, and infrastructural support; processes like case identification and management, capacity enhancement, epidemiological surveillance, prevention measures, outbreak control, and enhanced communication and educational initiatives; and, notably, the programme's outcomes. Data were collected through 3-h Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) divided into two groups, each with 12 participants: healthcare professionals and programme managers. Additionally, in-depth interviews (IDIs) were conducted with ten informants. Employing the Input-Process-Output (IPO) model, this study meticulously analysed the healthcare system dynamics and the interventions' efficacy. RESULTS: The study unveiled many challenges during the input phase, including the absence of entomologists and a shortage of diagnostic tools. Despite these obstacles, it documented remarkable accomplishments in the output domain, marked by significant advancements in the distribution of mosquito nets and the successful implementation of the Early Warning System (EWS). Despite the adversities, the programme has made substantial strides towards malaria elimination. CONCLUSIONS: Urgent action is imperative to bolster the effectiveness of the malaria elimination programme. Key measures encompass augmenting the entomologist workforce, optimizing resource allocation, and ensuring stringent adherence to regional regulations. Addressing these concerns will enhance programme efficacy, yielding enduring public health benefits. This research substantially contributes to Indonesia's ongoing malaria elimination endeavours, furnishing actionable insights for programme enhancement. Consequently, this research holds significant importance for the malaria elimination drive.

PURPOSE: Locomotor experiences in upright postures are essential for developing toddlers' mobility and social functions. This pilot randomised controlled trial aimed to examine the effectiveness of using a modified ride-on car (ROC) with postural combinations of standing and sitting on mobility and social function in toddlers with motor delays. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen participants aged 1-3 years with mild, moderate or severe motor delays were randomly assigned to four ROC groups. The ROC groups had different combinations of standing and sitting, namely standing for 70 min (ROC-Stand70, five participants), standing for 45 min (ROC-Stand45, four participants), standing for 25 min (ROC-Stand25, five participants) and sitting for 70 min (ROC-Sit70, five participants). All participants participated in 2-h sessions twice a week for 12 weeks. The Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory, Goal Attainment Scaling and Bayley-III tests were administered before and after the intervention, and after 12 weeks of follow-up. A mixed-model analysis of variance was used to compare inter- and intra-group differences. This trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03707405). RESULTS: All groups showed significantly improved mobility, social function and goal achievement at the post-test (p < .001). However, no significant changes were observed in Bayley scores. CONCLUSIONS: Combining physical and social environmental modifications with active exploration is crucial for early power mobility training in toddlers with motor delays. To enhance the robustness and generalisability of our findings, future studies should include larger sample sizes, consider variations in motor delays, and measure energy expenditure during the intervention.Implications for rehabilitationProviding active exploratory experience using ride-on cars (ROCs) with various postural combinations can improve a child's mobility.The ROC training with various postural combinations can improve social function, and the degree of improvement may depend on the severity of motor delays.Setting goals with caregivers and incorporating their roles in the training process can empower them to interact with children more frequently and actively.

With the aim of implementing the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the CPC, and the Opinions on Promoting the Inheritance, Innovation and Development of TCM, and to underscore the exemplary role of significant scientific and technological achievements, the China Association of Chinese Medicine, in alignment with relevant requirements and under the guidance of authoritative experts, has organized a comprehensive review of the important scientific and technological achievements in the field of TCM since the 18th National Congress of the CPC. Through rigorous procedures, including collecting and reviewing achievements, writing achievement reports, organizing expert reviews, and seeking public opinions, remarkable research achievements in TCM during 2012—2022 were compiled.

Objective:Analyze the operation mode of the valuation investment of scientific and technological achievements in hospitals, and provide a certain reference for other hospitals to carry out valuation investment in scientific and technological achievements.Methods:This paper analyzed the origin and current situation of the valuation investment of scientific and technological achievements. Taking Peking University Cancer Hospital as an example, it made an in-depth analysis of the valuation investment model of scientific and technological achievements.Results:The study found that the valuation investment of scientific and technological achievements in hospitals includes several key links such as signing the Valuation Investment Agreement, signing the Shareholder Agreement and the Articles of Association, the registration and identification of technical contracts, the issuance of invoices, and deferred taxation. And several suggestions on how to apply this model for the transformation of scientific and technological achievements were put forward.Conclusions:Although the implementation process of scientific and technological achievements is cumbersome, the operation mode is diverse, and the ownership of equity is difficult to distinguish, the advantages are extremely obvious. It can closely combine technological capital and industrial capital, form a strong and effective technological alliance and a community of multiple interests, better use the market-oriented motivation of scientific and technological innovation, and carry out cutting-edge research in line with market prospects.

At present,China's multi-level Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)Medical Alliance has been gradually formed,the sinking effect of resource sharing is obvious.The level of medical services homogenization has been improved,the operation guarantee mechanism has been continuously improved,and the diagnosis and treatment capacity of each member unit has continued to improve.However,in the construction of various regions,there are still government departments'weak cognition and planning of TCM Medical Alliance,and the characteristics are insufficient.It is recommended to strengthen the functional positioning and connotation construction of TCM Medical Alliance,improve the operation and management mechanism,and give full play to the"baton"role of performance evaluation,so as to effectively promote the sinking and balanced distribution of TCM high-quality resources.

Introducción: Los modelos educativos innovados requieren estrategias diversas que consideren distintos estilos de aprendizaje y favorezcan la adquisición de nuevo conocimiento. Sujetos y métodos. Se realizó la evaluación de perfiles en estudiantes de Odontología de la Universidad de Valparaíso, Chile, empleando test de perfiles específicos, aplicando variedad de estrategias didácticas en función de ello y analizando los logros de aprendizaje alcanzados por los estudiantes del grupo de estudio.Resultados: Los test permitieron establecer perfiles de aprendizaje y distribución; las estrategias educativas orientadas necesarias; y los logros de aprendizaje alcanzados por las personas consideradas en el trabajo y evidenciadas en las evaluaciones. Discusión: El trabajo estableció todos los tipos de perfiles y distribución equilibrada, lo que implica la consideración de seis estrategias diferentes, que se aplicaron y evaluaron mediante la identificación de los logros de aprendizaje. Conclusiones: El objetivo general y los específicos se alcanzaron mediante el empleo de evaluaciones individualizadas con test y análisis específicos, determinando toda gama de perfiles y composición equilibrada; consecuentemente, se implementaron estrategias diversas que permitieron alcanzar resultados de aprendizaje satisfactorios para todos los estudiantes evaluados.(AU)


Introduction: Innovative educational models require different strategies considering different learning styles, allowing the acquisition of new knowledge. Subjects and methods. An evaluation of profiles was carried out in Dentistry students of the University of Valparaíso, Chile, using specific profile tests; applying a variety of didactic strategies depending on it and analyzing the learning achievements of the students of the study group. Results: The tests allowed to establish learning and distribution profiles; the necessary oriented educational strategies applied; together with the achievement of learning objectives for all the people considered in the work, evidenced in the evaluations. Discussion: This study identified all types of profiles and balanced distribution, implying consideration of six different strategies, which were applied and evaluated by identifying learning achievements. Conclusions: General and specific objective achieved through the use of individualized evaluations with specific tests and analyses, determining all the range of profiles and balanced composition; consequently, using diverse strategies that allowed to achieve satisfactory learning results for all the students evaluated.(AU)

Phenomenon: Impostor syndrome (IS) is manifested in the fear of failing and being exposed as incompetent, despite exceptional professional performance. IS has been recognized in many professions, including medicine. Understanding IS prevalence and risk factors is critical to ensure the well-being of medical students and, by extension, future physicians. Approach: It was expected that IS is highly prevalent in medical students, higher in women and associated with year of study and prior clinical experience. The Clance Impostors Phenomenon Scale (CIPS) was used to collect the responses from of medical students in May 2023. Questionnaires were distributed online to both public medical faculties in Slovenia. Findings: 207 medical students (157 women, 50 men; mean age: 23.2 ± 2.6 years) completed the questionnaire (response rate = 13.1%). Women exhibited higher CIPS scores (66.0 ± 13.9) compared to men (58.8 ± 15.1) (p = 0.005). Neither age (r = 0.05; p = 0.464) nor year of study (r = 0.03; p = 0.653) was correlated with CIPS score. There were also no differences in CIPS score between students with (63.4 ± 15.2) and without (64.7 ± 13.9) prior clinical work experience (p = 0.531). Insights: The results of the present study suggest that IS can occur at any stage of medical education, with a slightly higher prevalence in women. This study contributes to the understanding of IS among medical students and calls for addressing environmental factors and taking supportive measures to mitigate the impact of IS and promote medical students' well-being and success.
