RESUMEN

Brangus is a composite cattle breed developed with the objective of combining the advantages of Angus and Zebuine breeds (Brahman, mainly) in tropical climates. The aim of this work was to estimate breed composition both genome-wide and locally, at the chromosome level, and to uncover genomic regions evidencing positive selection in the Argentinean Brangus population/nucleus. To do so, we analysed marker data from 478 animals, including Brangus, Angus and Brahman. Average breed composition was 35.0% ± 9.6% of Brahman, lower than expected according to the theoretical fractions deduced by the usual cross-breeding practice in this breed. Local ancestry analysis evidenced that breed composition varies between chromosomes, ranging from 19.6% for BTA26 to 56.1% for BTA5. Using approaches based on allelic frequencies and linkage disequilibrium, genomic regions with putative selection signatures were identified in several chromosomes (BTA1, BTA5, BTA6 and BTA14). These regions harbour genes involved in horn development, growth, lipid metabolism, reproduction and immune response. We argue that the overlapping of a chromosome segment originated in one of the parental breeds and over-represented in the sample with the location of a signature of selection constitutes evidence of a selection process that has occurred in the breed since its take off in the 1950s. In this regard, our results could contribute to the understanding of the genetic mechanisms involved in cross-bred cattle adaptation and productivity in tropical environments.

RESUMEN

The present trial evaluated the effect of crossbred composition and Temperature and Humidity Index (THI) on vaginal temperature (VT) of Girolando dairy cows maintained under tropical pasture during warm seasons. The VT was monitored along 41 to 96 h in 615 Girolando cows with different Holstein (H) × Gir genetic composition (1/2 H = 284, 3/4 H = 248, and 7/8 H = 83) from six Brazilian farms in the summer of 2016 and 2017. VT of each cow at each hour of the day and the respective THI were averaged per hour across all monitoring days to generate an averaged value for VT and THI during 24 h. A linear mixed model with repeated measures using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method for (co)variance components estimation procedure was employed. The final model adjusted the VT for the effects of cow, time, THI, farm, year, pregnancy status, body condition score (BCS), milk yield, genetic composition, and genetic composition*time interaction. Fixed effects were evaluated by ANOVA and tested with Tukey test in R software version 3.6.1 (R Core Team, 2019). Overall mean of VT, air temperature (AT), and THI were 39.06 ± 0.52 °C, 25.63 ± 0.40 °C, and 75.06 ± 3.96, respectively. VT had moderate positive correlation with THI (r² = 0.45, P < 0.001) and AT (r² = 0.46, P < 0.001). The VT had estimated linear increase of 0.05 °C for each THI unit increase (P < 0.001). Least square mean of VT varied among the farms (P < 0.001), pregnancy status (P < 0.001), and BCS (P < 0.05) but not for Milk yield (P > 0.05). The daily average VT was affected by genetic composition (P < 0.001) with highest temperature for 3/4 H (39.08 ± 0.06 °C a) and 7/8 H (39.09 ± 0.06 °C a) and lowest temperature for 1/2 H (38.95 ± 0.06 °C b). The difference of VT among the three crossbred groups varied in function of the time of the day, from 12:00 to 20:00 h (P < 0.001), with 3/4 Holstein and 7/8 Holstein cows reaching similar VT, above to the upper limit 39.1 °C and higher than 1/2 Holstein cows during all this period. In conclusion, Girolando cows are sensitive to heat stress in tropical condition during warm seasons. Moreover, Girolando cows with genetic composition higher than 3/4 Holstein display reduced thermoregulatory efficiency. Therefore, Girolando cows in tropical dairy farms require strategies to mitigate heat stress according to their genetic composition.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to estimate the energy and protein requirements for maintenance and growth of lambs. A total of 35 crossbreed Dorper × Santa Ines lambs [31 ± 1.28 kg of initial body weight (BW) and 4 months old] were distributed in a completely randomized design with three treatments groups (ad libitum, 30 and 60% of feed restriction). Five lambs were slaughtered at the beginning of the experimental trial as a reference group to estimate the initial empty BW (EBW) and body composition. When the animals of the ad libitum treatment reached a BW average of 47.2 kg, at day 84 of trial, all lambs were slaughtered. The feed restriction promoted reduction in body fat (P < 0.001) and energy concentration (P < 0.001), while protein showed a quadratic response (P = 0.05). The equations obtained for NEg and NPg requirements were 0.2984 × EBW0.75 × EBWG0.8069 and 248.617 × EBW-0.15546, respectively. The net energy (NEm) and protein (NPm) for maintenance were 71.00 kcal/kg EBW0.75/day and 1.76 g/kg EBW0.75/day, respectively. In conclusion, the NEg and NPg requirement for lambs with 30 kg of BW and 200 g of average daily gain (ADG) were 0.736 Mcal/day and 24.38 g/day, respectively. Our findings indicate that the NEm for crossbreed Dorper × Santa Ines lambs is similar to those recommended by the international committees; however, we support the hypothesis that the requirements for gain are lower.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to evaluate the level of concentrate supplementation on the production and chemical composition of milk from 12 crossbred F1 dual-purpose cows (½ Bos taurus ½ Bos indicus) and estimate the emission of CH4, N2O, and CO2 gases. The study included 12 crossbred F1 dual-purpose cows over 60 days of lactation. The cows grazed on 28% tropical native grassland and 72% Brachiaria spp. and Cynodon neumfluensis, supplemented with 0, 150, 300, and 450g of concentrate per kg daily milk production, during three experimental periods of 15 days each in a crossover design. Pasture and concentrate samples were collected and were analyzed for dry matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber. Milk production (kg d-1) was recorded daily, nitrous oxide (N2O), and emissions from excreta and daily CH4 production were calculated. Results were analyzed with the SAS MIXED procedure. Concentrate supplementation in tropical crossbred dairy cows did not improve milk yield but increased CH4 and N2O production (P < 0.0001) per cow as the concentrate increased in the diet; the Ym factor from the tropical region yielded less CH4 than the IPCC Ym model (P < 0.0001). In conclusion, the calculation of CH4 using specific emission factors for the tropical climate region is better than the IPCC default emission factors in order not to overestimate the CH4 emissions.(AU)

RESUMEN

The background of this study was blood profile and cows' behavior that could be used as a tool to diagnose reproductive status in the dairy cows. This research was aimed to determine biochemical blood profile, progesterone level, and behaviors of Friesian Holstein crossbreed dairy cow in the tropical climates. Fifteen Friesian-Holstein crossbreeds cows, in early lactation, reared by local farmers were divided into two barn types: individual and groups of cows. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein using a 22G needle on days 0, 14, and 28. For the determination of blood profile, blood was collected into Vacuntainer® blood tubes containing ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to arrest glycolysis. The blood was transported to the laboratory with a coolbox. The concentration of progesterone in plasma was assayed byenzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a commercial kit and the biochemical blood profile serum was measured by using microlab 300. The variables observed were glucose, cholesterol, urea, and non-pregnant progesterone. Data obtained was examined by T-test analysis. The result showed that the Temperature-Humidity Index were 81.3 and 79.6 respectively, there were no significant differences between two observation, in terms of total feeding time (3.06±0.48 and 2.91±0.22 hours/day), total water consumption (86.23±0.58 and 85.37±0.88 l/day), total standing (12.70±0.21 and 12.83±0.34 hours/day), total laying (11.30±0.71 and 11.16±0.62 hours/day). The blood profile and progesterone levels were lower than the normal range in dairy cows. Also, the result indicated that blood parameters were not significantly different (P > 0.05) between individual pen and group. The result indicated that the progesterone level was not significant in two models of management dairy cows. The conclusion of the research is the climate can affect behavior and the blood parameters. Blood profiles [...].(AU)

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to assess the distribution of runs of homozygosity (ROH) and autozygosity islands in the composite Montana Tropical® beef cattle to explore hotspot regions which could better characterize the different biological types within the composite breed. Montana animals (n = 1,436) were genotyped with the GGP-LD BeadChip (~30,000 markers). ROH was identified in every individual using the plink v1.90 software. Medium and long ROH prevailed in the genome, which accounted for approximately 74% of all ROH detected. On an average, 2.0% of the genome was within ROH, agreeing with the pedigree-based inbreeding coefficient. The Montana cattle with a higher proportion of productive breed types showed the highest number of autozygosity islands (n = 17), followed by those with a higher proportion of breeds adapted to tropical environments (n = 15). Enriched terms (p < .05) associated with the immune and inflammatory response, homeostasis, reproduction, mineral absorption, and lipid metabolism were described within the autozygosity islands. In this regard, over-represented GO terms and KEGG pathways described in this population may play a key role in providing information to explore the genetic and biological mechanisms together with the genomic regions underlying each biological type that favoured their optimal performance ability in tropical and subtropical regions.

RESUMEN

Dietary protein adjustments can reduce environmental impact and economic losses in production systems. However, we lack information regarding nitrogen (N) metabolism and protein requirements for maintenance of crossbred animals such as Red Norte breed, precluding a precise dietary management. The objective was to evaluate the effect of increasing dietary CP levels (9%, 11%, 13%, 15% and 17%) on intake, digestibility and N balance, as well as to estimate the metabolizable protein requirements for maintenance (MPm) of growing Red Norte bulls. Thirty five animals averaging 280 ± 4.0 kg BW were fed during 45 days in a 60 : 40 forage : concentrate ratio diet in which the last 5 days were used for the digestibility trial. Intakes of CP and non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFCs) and feed efficiency linearly increased (P < 0.05) as CP levels increased, while DM, NDF, nitrogen efficiency use and ether extract were not influenced by CP levels (P > 0.05). Digestibilities of DM, organic matter, ether extract, NFC and CP as well as metabolizable energy intake linearly increased (P < 0.05), and true digestibility of CP was not affected (P > 0.05) by treatments. Urinary N and retained N linearly increased (P < 0.05) with the increase in dietary N. The MPm were estimated as 4.46 g/BW0.75 and the efficiency of use of MPm was 0.673. In conclusion, obtained MPm requirements of growing Red Norte bulls are greater than the values reported in literature for Zebu cattle and dietary CP levels of 15% and 17% exhibited great responses for growing Red Norte cattle. However, a cost-benefit evaluation should be done before its use.

As vacas Holandês apresentaram maior peso vivo.

For this, 24 cows were evaluated, 11 Holstein and 13 crossbreeds Holstein x Jersey. Weekly, venous blood sample were collected to determine concentration of glucose, beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), total protein, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK), total calcium, ionic calcium, magnesium, inorganic phosphorus and cholesterol. Body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS) were also evaluated. The data were submitted to analysis of variance with repeated measures in time. Holstein cows presented higher BW, however, there was no difference for BCS in compare to crossbreed Holstein x Jersey cows. Tendency for higher serum concentrations of BHBA, AST and higher concentration of ionic calcium was observed in crossbreed cows in comparison to the Holstein. The energetic profile during the pre and postpartum transition period is similar for both genetic groups with higher concentrations of BHBA on the first week of lactation, however, with a tendency of higher serum concentrations of BHBA for crossbreed cows. Higher concentrations of ionic calcium were observed in crossbreed cows and higher concentrations of phosphorus in Holstein cows on peripartum. Holstein and Holtein x Jersey crossbreed cows have a similar energy profile during the pre and postpartum transition period in most of the indicators, except for calcium that was higher in crossbred cows and higher phosphorus in Holstein cows.(AU)

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ram genotype (Dorper or Southdown), sex and birth type on the growth characteristics of 268 lambs from Australian Merino ewes. Until weaning all animals were kept on red clover pasture (Trifolium pretense), chicory (Cychorium intibus), white clover (Trifolium repens), fescue (Festuca arundinacea) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), with a stocking rate of 10 sheep and their lambs/ha. From weaning (29.95±4.94kg of body weight and 109.45±7.41 day-old), the lambs remained on the same pasture which was used during lactation, being subsequently finished on a soybean culture (Glycine max), with a stocking rate of 30 lambs/ha. No effect of ram genotype (P>0.05) was verified on any of the variables. On the other hand, the males (criptorquidas) presented superior weight gain from birth to weaning and from weaning until shipment of lambs for slaughter, (241 and 212g/day; 121 and 94g/day, for males and females, respectively; P≤0.001), which provided a body weight at shipment 14.9% higher than the female (40.89 and 35.59kg, for males and females, respectively; P≤0.001). Lambs originated from simple delivery presented higher (P≤0.001) body weight and body measures at birth, and a higher growth rate until weaning (239 and 214g/day, simple and double delivery, respectively; P≤0.001). Therefore, after weaning, the lambs originated from double delivery presented higher weight gain (98 and 117g/day) (P≤0.05) and were superior (P≤0.001) in kilograms of weaned lambs (26.80 and 49.61kg) or shipped (33.91 and 64.69kg) per parity ewes. Regardless of the sex and birth type, all lambs overcame the weight and body conditions required for commercialization of heavy lambs in Uruguai in half the average time of traditional genotypes.

Regardless of the sex and birth type, all lambs overcame the weight and body conditions required for commercialization of heavy lambs in Uruguai in half the average time of traditional genotypes.(AU)

RESUMEN

Males and females, including purebred Santa Inês lamb (SI) and crosses between Santa Inês dams and Texel (TxSI), Ile de France (IFxSI) and Bergamasca (BxSI) sires were feedlot finished and slaughtered at 15, 25, 35 and 45kg live weight. After slaughter, the following non- carcass components were weighed and calculated the allometric growth. Lungs of BxSI males grew faster than those of SI and TxSI. Trachea/esophagus in SI and TxSI males grew slower than IFxSI and BxSI. Kidneys BxSI males grew faster than TxSI and IFxSI. Livers of female TxSI lamb grew more rapidly than those of females in the other genetic groups. In both males and females, the rumen/reticulum grew faster in the TxSI group than SI and BxSI groups.

Carcass characteristics and chemical composition of Longissimus muscle of 32 young bulls from four genetic groups slaughtered at 14 months old were evaluated. Experimental design was completely randomized and distributed into four genetics groups: 1. Caracu (CAR); 2. Canchin (CAN); 3. Charolais vs. Caracu (CHC) and 4. Aberdeen Angus vs. Canchin (AAC). Carcass dressing and carcass conformation were lower for CAR than CAN, CHC and AAC genetic groups. No difference has been reported with regard to moisture, ash, crude protein, total lipids and total cholesterol among four genetics groups. The genetic groups influence fatty acid profile on Longissimus muscle in bulls. Cattle with zebu genes had the highest rates in unsaturated fatty acids, saturated fatty acids represented approximately 50% of total fatty acid composition on Longissimus muscle. The genetic groups presented differences in PUFA, SFA, n-6 and n-3 percentages and n-6 and n-3 ratios.

Caracu (CAR); 2. Canchin (CAN); 3. Charolês vs. Caracu (CHC) e 4. Aberdeen Angus vs. Canchin (AAC).
