AIM: Lateral epicondylitis is one of the leading orthopedic problems encountered in daily practice. Treatments are more symptomatic than curative. Percutaneous drilling is a minimally invasive method that provides satisfactory results. The aim of this study was to evaluate patients who had undergone percutaneous drilling for chronic lateral epicondylitis. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study included 31 patients who underwent surgical percutaneous drilling because of chronic lateral epicondylitis between 2018 and 2021. The patients were evaluated with respect to demographic characteristics, including age, gender, body mass index (BMI), occupation, education level, hobbies, dominant side, and smoking status. The VAS (Visual Analog Scale) pain scores, PRTEE score (Patient-Rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation - a lateral epicondylitis function scale), and Roles-Maudsly score were examined preoperatively and at one and 12 months postoperatively together with grip strength measured with a Jamar hand dynamometer. RESULTS: Statistically significant improvements were determined in the VAS score during activity from 8.9 preoperatively to 2.06 at 12 months postoperatively (p<0.01), and in the PRTEE score, from 64.12 preoperatively to 20.61 at 12 months postoperatively (p<0.01). The Roles-Maudsly score at 12 months postoperatively was determined to be excellent in 13 (41.9%) patients, and good in 14 (45.2%). Mean grip strength increased from 69.55 before treatment to 90.97 at the end of 12 months postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Autobiological treatments are at the forefront of current treatments for tendinopathies. Percutaneous drilling is a closed method and can be considered an ideal method in the treatment of tendinosis caused by inflammation and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) contained in hematoma. It is also an advantageous treatment method for patients with aesthetic concerns as it does not leave any scar tissue and has a low risk of complications.

Posterolateral impingement is sometimes diagnosed as a cause of refractory elbow pain, often after other treatments have been tried for common conditions such as lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) or subtly different conditions common in throwing athletes, such as valgus extension overload syndrome. Arthroscopic surgical treatment is effective when targeting abnormal anatomy such as plical folds. Partial excision of the olecranon must be undertaken with caution because it can lead to instability. This systematic review of the current literature uses a narrative synthesis to identify anatomical morphological variations of the olecranon, humeral and capitellar geometry, and overloading of the lateral part of the elbow as causative factors for this condition and discusses how arthroscopic techniques can resolve symptoms. Further understanding of the static and dynamic anatomy of the lateral part of the elbow will help to develop future treatment and preventive strategies.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can help evaluate lateral epicondylitis; however, abnormal findings on MRI are not always consistent with the symptoms. The occurrence of such abnormal MRI findings at the lateral side of the elbow in patients without pain remains unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the MRI findings of the lateral elbow joint in patients with no complaints of pain in the elbow joint. We retrospectively identified 152 patients who had undergone MRI of the area including the elbow from July 2015 to January 2022. We excluded patients with pain in the elbow area and those with diagnosis of diseases that could affect MRI findings at the lateral elbow. The presence of lateral collateral ligament complex (LCLC) and common extensor tendon (CET) lesions on MRI was assessed by two reviewers. In total, 22 patients (12 men and 10 women) were included in the analysis. The mean age of the patients was 54 years. Five patients, all ≥65 years old, had abnormal findings related to the LCLC or CET on MRI. Abnormal LCLC and CET findings on MRI can be encountered in older patients even in the absence of elbow pain.

This report describes a novel technique for the treatment of recalcitrant lateral epicondylosis (LE) by radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the epicondylar branch of the posterior cutaneous nerve of the forearm (PCNF-BrEpi). Here, we describe two patients suffering from recalcitrant LE who were treated with ultrasound-guided RFA of the PCNF-BrEpi in the outpatient pain clinic setting. Patient follow-up was made at eight weeks, five months, and seven months. Numerical pain rating (NPR) for pain and Upper Extremity Functional Index-15 (UEFI-15) were obtained at baseline and at each of the follow-ups. Both patients reported significant improvement in their pain and function quickly. RFA may be a viable treatment option for recalcitrant LE. Larger comparative trials and further investigation are needed to establish results in comparison to conventional treatments and to validate RFA as a treatment option in recalcitrant LE.

Background: Clinical assessment of triceps brachii tendon tears is challenging, and conventional imaging methods have limitations. Timely surgical referral is important in high-grade tears to maximize patient outcomes, and musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK US) can be used at the time of clinical examination to identify such injuries requiring advanced imaging and orthopedic referral. Hypothesis/Purpose: The purpose of this case report is to describe how MSK US was used to facilitate advanced imaging and timely orthopedic referral for a patient presenting to a physical therapist with a high-grade triceps tendon avulsion. Study Design: Case Report. Case Description: A 35-year-old male soldier presented to a direct access sports physical therapist with acute-on-chronic right elbow pain. Physical examination and MSK US were used to identify a high-grade partial triceps brachii tendon tear. The MSK US findings informed the physical therapist's decision-making process to refer the subject for timely advanced imaging studies as well as referral to an orthopedic physician. Outcomes: A high-grade partial triceps tendon avulsion was confirmed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The subject was then seen by an orthopedic surgeon and underwent surgical repair of the tendon within the recommended three-week timeframe for optimal outcomes. The subject completed a post-operative rehabilitation program and returned to full physical and occupational activities. Conclusion: MSK US can assist in the diagnosis of challenging triceps tendon injuries, facilitating timely advanced imaging and orthopedic referrals for high-grade injuries to optimize patient outcomes. Level of Evidence: 5.

The aim of this study was to obtain quantitative data on elbow joint ROM in elite freestyle swimmers with EP in China. Of the 50 elite freestyle swimmers recruited, 41 completed all measurements during dry-land swimming stroke simulations. Elbow joint angle, velocity, and acceleration were measured using inertial measurement units. The RMSE/D was calculated to determine the elbow joint ROM deviation. Joint angle (3.33 ∘-42.96 ∘), angular velocity (-364.15 to 245.69 ∘/s), and angular acceleration (-7051.80 to 1465.35 ∘/s2) were significantly different between the critical pain and healthy. The probability distributions of joint angle (15.47 ∘ ±14.54 ∘), angular velocity (2.41 ∘ ±111.06 ∘/s), and angular acceleration (1.93 ± 2222.6 ∘/s2) in the slight pain group were significantly different betweenhealthy and critical pain. The RMSE/D distributions of angular velocity (28.3%) and acceleration (21.48%) in the critical pain deviated from the healthy. The peak value-RMSE/D matrix model obtained proved that elbow ROM significantly differed between the elite freestyle swimmers with EP and the healthy. Angular velocity and acceleration indicate the weakness and negative influence of kinematics on patients with EP. Thus, Potential solutions are to constantly optimise freestyle swimming techniques and strengthen the arm muscles.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical practice guidelines recommend the radial nerve mechanosensitivity evaluation in patients with lateral epicondylalgia. Despite different positions and sequences having been described, no research analyzed how each variation triggers symptoms associated with lateral epicondylalgia. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of different positions and sequences in the upper limb neural tension test 2b (ULNT2b) in symptom responses in patients with lateral epicondylalgia. METHODS: In this observational study, 66 patients underwent 4 test conditions: standard ULNT2b, ULNT2b proximal to distal, ULNT2B with resisted supination, and resisted supination isolated. Paresthesia sensations, symptom reproduction, pain intensity (measured using a visual analog scale), and distribution of painful symptoms data were collected. RESULTS: Significant differences in paresthesia sensations were observed between groups, with significant differences between the standard ULNT2B and other ULNT variations or resisted supination maneuvers. Symptom reproduction also differed significantly across groups, with significant differences between the standard ULNT2B and other ULNT or resisted supination tests. The positive/negative test and percentage of distribution of painful symptoms scores varied significantly across 4 conditions in both lateral and frontal views. Although pain intensity scores during tests were comparable among the tests, distribution of painful symptoms differed significantly. CONCLUSION: Variations in the ULNT2b test can affect symptom responses in patients with lateral epicondylalgia. The standard ULNT2b test appears more effective at reproducing symptoms, intensity of paresthesia, and distribution of painful symptoms compared to other ULNT variations and the resisted supination test. IMPACT: ULNT2b sequences have been shown to elicit varying responses concerning paresthesia, replication of familiar symptoms, positive/negative test results, and distribution of painful symptoms. Clinicians should consider specific test variations during the patients' radial nerve mechanosensitivity assessment to identify aggravating factors reproducing recognizable symptoms. A control group of asymptomatic participants and the role of presence of other comorbidities, psychological factors, or the duration of symptoms were not considered in this study and might play an important role influencing the results of the tests.

The effects of IT and R.I.C.E. treatment on arm muscle performance in overhead athletes with elbow pain (EP) have been partially validated. However, there is a lack of research evidence regarding the efficacy of these two methods on arm muscle performance among swimmers with EP. The aim of this study was to investigate the trends and differences in the effects of IT and R.I.C.E. treatment on arm muscle performance among swimmers with EP. The main outcomes were the time effects and group effects of interventions on muscle voluntary contraction (MVC). Sixty elite freestyle swimmers from Tianjin, China, voluntarily participated in the study and completed a 10-week intervention program. Swimmers with EP in the IT group showed a positive trend in MVC, with an approximately 2% increase, whereas the MVC of subjects in the R.I.C.E. treatment group and control group decreased by approximately 4% and 5%, respectively. In comparison, the effects of the IT intervention on the MVC of the triceps and brachioradialis muscles in swimmers with EP were significant (p = 0.042 < 0.05, p = 0.027 < 0.05). The mean MVC value of the IT group (0.60) was greater than that of the other two groups (0.51, 0.50). IT has a beneficial impact on the MVC performance of the triceps and brachioradialis muscles in swimmers with EP. It is recommended that professionals consider incorporating IT into regular training routines to mitigate the risk of EP issues. Future research should examine the effectiveness of both interventions on hand-grip strength and completion time in 50-m freestyle swim drills in order for swimmers with EP to return to this sport.

BACKGROUND: Elbow pain is common among youth baseball players and elbow MRI is increasingly utilized to complement the clinical assessment. OBJECTIVE: To characterize, according to skeletal maturity, findings on elbow MRI from symptomatic youth baseball players. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This IRB-approved, HIPAA-compliant retrospective study included pediatric (<18 years of age) baseball players with elbow pain who underwent MRI examinations between 2010 and 2021. Two radiologists, blinded to the outcome, independently reviewed examinations to categorize skeletal maturity and to identify osseous and soft tissue findings with consensus used to resolve discrepancies. Findings were compared between skeletally immature and mature patients and logistic regression models identified predictors of surgery. RESULTS: This study included 130 children (115 boys, 15 girls): 85 skeletally immature and 45 mature (12.8±2.3 and 16.2±1.0 years, respectively, p<0.01). Kappa coefficient for interobserver agreement on MRI findings ranged from 0.64 to 0.96. Skeletally immature children, when compared to mature children, were more likely to have elbow effusion (27%, 23/85 vs 9%, 4/45; p=0.03), medial epicondyle marrow edema (53%, 45/85 vs 16%, 7/45; p<0.01), avulsion fracture (19%, 16/85 vs 2%, 1/45; p=0.02), and juvenile osteochondritis dissecans (OCD, 22%, 19/85 vs 7%, 3/45; p=0.04), whereas skeletally mature children were more likely to have sublime tubercle marrow edema (49%, 22/45 vs 11%, 9/85; p<0.01) and triceps tendinosis (40%, 18/45 vs 20%, 17/85; p=0.03). Intra-articular body (OR=4.2, 95% CI 1.5-47.8, p=0.02) and osteochondritis dissecans (OR=3.7, 95% CI 1.1-11.9, p=0.03) were independent predictors for surgery. CONCLUSION: Differential patterns of elbow MRI findings were observed among symptomatic pediatric baseball players based on regional skeletal maturity. Intra-articular body and osteochondritis dissecans were independent predictors of surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound guided-percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation appears to be effective in the treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the immediate effects of one session of percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on the radial nerve in patients with lateral elbow pain. METHODS: A randomized clinical trial was conducted. Sixty patients with chronic lateral elbow pain were allocated into real-percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (n = 30) or sham-percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (n = 30) where the patients received one-single session of the real or sham percutaneous stimulation on the radial nerve, respectively. Pressure pain thresholds, pain intensity, pain-free grip strength, and the self-perceived improvement were evaluated after the intervention. RESULTS: Significant differences between groups for pain intensity (-11.55, 95% CI -21.79 to -1.30, p < .028), but not for pressure pain threshold or pain-free grip strength, were found. Patients receiving real-percutaneous stimulation had significant improvement in pain-free grip strength on the treated side. The proportion of individuals reporting moderate to large self-perceived improvement (≥4) was significantly higher (p = .026) after real-percutaneous stimulation than after sham-percutaneous stimulation. CONCLUSION: A single session of real-percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation targeting the radial nerve in subjects with lateral elbow pain decreased pain intensity between groups and increased pain-free grip strength on the treated side but not between groups.

PURPOSE: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are common worldwide and gender differences exist in terms of prevalence and disability. MSDs are a leading cause of sick leave and physical work exposures. To assess the association between physical exposures assessed by the gender-specific CONSTANCES Job-Exposure Matrix (JEM) and musculoskeletal pain in six areas: neck pain, shoulder pain, elbow/arm pain, hand/wrist pain, low back pain, knee/leg pain; and to compare the results with those obtained using the non-gendered CONSTANCES JEM and with individual self-report exposures. METHODS: We included 48,736 male and 63,326 female workers from the CONSTANCES cohort (France). The association between 27 physical exposures and musculoskeletal self-reported pain in six body areas was assessed using logistic regression. We conducted the analysis with three types of exposures: (1) individual self-reported exposures; (2) gender-specific CONSTANCES JEM; (3) non-gendered CONSTANCES JEM, and adjusted for age and Body Mass Index (BMI). Analyses were stratified by gender. RESULTS: The associations to the gender-specific and non-gendered JEM were similar. The odds ratios using individual self-reported exposures were comparable to the JEM-based associations, with the exceptions of the exposures 'change tasks', 'rest eyes' and 'reach behind'. In some comparisons, there were differences in the direction and/or significance of effects between genders (regardless of whether the JEM used was gender-specific or not). CONCLUSION: The gender-specific and non-gendered JEMs gave similar results, hence, developing physical work exposures JEMs that are gender-specific may not be essential. However, when predicting musculoskeletal pain, it seems relevant to stratify the analysis by gender.

The goal of this review is to give a thorough overview of the physiotherapy methods used to treat tennis elbow. In order to determine the most effective treatment options, it is crucial to comprehend the pathophysiology and etiology of tennis elbow from the outset of the study. The assessment and diagnosis of tennis elbow are next covered, emphasizing the importance of physiotherapists in correctly diagnosing the ailment and distinguishing it from other musculoskeletal problems that are comparable to it. This study primarily focuses on the numerous physiotherapy therapies for tennis elbow, which may include but are not limited to, and the section examines the use of manual treatments to treat pain and enhance joint function, including joint mobilizations, soft tissue massage, and myofascial release. Exercise rehabilitation covers the value of tailored workouts to bolster the weak muscles and enhance the elbow joint's biomechanics. Numerous workout regimens are covered, such as eccentric training and progressive resistance exercises, as well as modalities. Therapeutic agents frequently make use of modalities such as ultrasound, laser therapy, and cryotherapy. It may also make use of complementary therapeutic agents such as taping and bracing. Elbow pain (EP) in overhead sports is a common phenomenon. Swimming is classified as an overhead sport, but a lack of attention regarding EP in swimming has created a gap in the knowledge around elite freestyle swimming in Tianjin, China. The purpose of this study was to identify the distribution and prevalence of EP among elite freestyle swimmers in Tianjin, China. The methodology involved a total of 311 qualified participants who volunteered to undertake all measurements. The main findings showed that 183 of the elite freestyle swimmers in this study had EP (accounting for 58.84% of the total 311 participants), with 147 in slight pain and 36 in critical pain. The characteristics of a heavier body weight, taller height, longer left/right forearm length, and longer weekly average training hours serve as contributing factors to the occurrence of EP issues. Gender, age, weekly average training hours, and left/right forearm length are the primary factors correlating with and influencing the assessment scores. In conclusion, swimmers with longer weekly training hours, older ages, heavier bodyweight, and longer forearm lengths should receive greater attention in relation to EP. Regular assessments at a high frequency serve as a means to identify the risk of EP.

Introduction: The elbow pain and restricted movement is a nagging problem and elbow arthropathies need to be excluded. On rare instances, uncommon etiology like a benign lesion is the culprit and the diagnosis would require judicious clinicoradiological correlation. Osteoid osteoma in the intra- or juxta-articular region is reported in the literature as rare, sporadic report. Case Report: A 23-year-old, Indian male patient presented with a provisional diagnosis of early elbow arthropathy on account of unexplained pain and restricted elbow movement without a history of trauma. He was subjected to appropriate investigations revealing synovial hypertrophy, effusion, and bone edema suggestive of early arthropathy. Additional imaging led to an uncommon definitive diagnosis. An intra-articular osteoid osteoma was found over the medial aspect of the coronoid fossa with a thin rim of cortical rim projecting anteriorly. The lesion was diagnosed and delineated on computerized tomography and an open excision of the lesion and synovectomy was done for histopathological evaluation. Histology confirmed the presence of an osteoid osteoma at an uncommon location. Conclusion: The careful appreciation of radiological images is critical to not miss significant etiology that may mimic non-specific elbow pain. High index of suspicion coupled with appropriate diagnostic imaging results in early diagnosis and appropriate management. Osteoid osteoma should be a differential diagnosis in cases with pain and restricted elbow movement and excision of which results in recovery of painless range of motion.

Tissue flossing (TF) is a novel device that has been shown to cause peripheral compression and concurrent change in joint range of motion, perception of mobility and muscular performance. However, the effect of tissue flossing on pain, perception of mobility and function at the elbow joint has not been thoroughly investigated. The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the acute effect of TF on pain and upper extremity functional performance in subjects with musculoskeletal-related complaints of pain surrounding the elbow joint. We utilized a randomized crossover design. Nine resistance trained participants (8 men/1 woman) mean age 35.6 ± 10.7 took part in this study. We measured the following outcome measures; Pain Visual Analog Scale, Short Form McGill Pain Questionnaire II, pain-pressure threshold and hand grip dynamometry (HHD) pre and post and a Likert scale for movement ability questionnaire, posttest only, following a TF and placebo condition for each participant. TF resulted in significant improvement in all test measures, except HHD, pre to post (p ≤ 0.05). All pre to post changes were associated with large effect sizes for TF compared to the placebo condition applied to the elbow improves pain quality and intensity, perception of mobility and pain-pressure threshold in resistance trained individuals with a history of musculoskeletal pain for greater than 1 month. The results of this pilot study suggest that TF may function as an adjunct to treatment in the management of musculoskeletal pathologies at the elbow joint.

Aim: To evaluate the clinical response to augmenting ultrasound-guided tenotomy (USGT) with an amniotic membrane (AM) allograft injection. Design: Retrospective study. Materials & methods: Subjects underwent either a USGT (N = 16) or a combined USGT plus AM injection (N = 14). Results: Both groups demonstrated a significant reduction in pain from baseline starting after 2 weeks in the USGT plus AM group (p = 0.036) and after 8 weeks in the USGT group (p = 0.021). The reduction in pain was sustained for the entire duration of the study (52 weeks). There was no significant difference in pain levels at 26- or 52-week follow-up or patient satisfaction between the two groups. Conclusion: USGT with or without AM allograft injections results in a significant reduction in pain with high patient satisfaction.


The goal of this study was to determine if a single injection of an amniotic membrane (AM) tissue improves clinical outcomes for patients with chronic tennis elbow treated with ultrasound-guided tenotomy. Ultrasound-guided tenotomy involves using a cutting device to remove degenerative tissue with ultrasound-guidance to help tendon's healing process. An AM injection is thought to reduce inflammation in the surrounding tissue, provide growth factors that help with the tendon's healing process, and minimize painful scar formation. 30 patients were included in this study (16 ultrasound-guided tenotomy [USGT] and 14 USGT plus AM injection). Both groups showed improvement in pain levels compared with their baseline at the short-term follow-up, and this reduction in pain was sustained for 52 weeks. There were no long-term differences between the two groups at the 52 week follow-up in pain levels or satisfaction. Our findings suggest that USGT, with or without AM injection, is an effective method of treatment for chronic tennis elbow.

BACKGROUND: Sesamoids and accessory bones are generally small-sized and oval-shaped structures whose function and pathology are not fully elucidated. Despite their small size, sesamoid bones can directly or indirectly cause diagnostic problems. Sesamoid bones are less common in the elbow region and may need to be differentiated from a lot of diagnoses such as fractures, osteochondritis dissecans, calcific tendinitis, and synovial chondromatosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old female patient presented with right elbow pain. An oval mass was seen near the medial epicondyle on the radiograph. A dynamic ultrasound examination was performed to reveal the relationship between the bone mass and the surrounding tissues, especially the ulnar nerve. Due to the well-circumscribed mass, a diagnosis of os subepicodlare mediale, a rare sesamoid bone, was made in light of current literature. CONCLUSIONS: When a bone mass is seen in patients presenting with elbow pain, it will be useful to know and consider the sesamoid bones. In addition, ultrasonography should be performed in addition to radiography for a localized sesamoid bone in the medial region and adjacent to the ulnar nerve. Thus, the relationship of the sesamoid bone with existing and potential complaints can be revealed and correct diagnosis-treatment approaches can be applied.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain can affect musculoskeletal problems of the upper limb in adolescent overhead athletes. However, few epidemiological studies have examined this causal relationship. This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the relationship between baseline low back pain experience and the occurrence of future shoulder and elbow pain among high school baseball players. METHODS: Participants comprised 383 high school baseball players from 43 high school baseball teams who had undergone baseline medical evaluations (a self-completed questionnaire and physical examination). The occurrence of shoulder and elbow pain during a 1-year follow-up and associations with baseline low back pain (positive subjective symptom during the last year at baseline) adjusted for flexibility of the scapulo-thoracic region, shoulder, and lower extremities, such as straight-leg raise angle (hamstring tightness), Thomas test (iliopsoas tightness), heel-buttock-distance (quadriceps tightness) and passive range of motion of the hip were investigated using multivariable analysis. RESULTS: A total of 307 players (80.2%) participated in the 1-year follow-up survey, with shoulder and elbow pain reported in 75 players (24.4%) and 119 players (38.8%), respectively, during follow-up. After adjusting for factors associated with shoulder pain using logistic regression modeling, significant associations between LBP experienced during the last year at baseline (odds ratio, 2.18; 95% confidence interval, 1.23-3.87; P = 0.0078) and new-onset of shoulder pain were noted. CONCLUSIONS: Baseline low back pain impacted future shoulder pain in high school baseball players during the 1-year follow-up. Management of shoulder pain warrants careful attention to low back pain.

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis or lateral elbow tendinopathy) is a self-limiting condition in most patients. Surgery is often offered to patients who fail to improve with conservative treatment. However, there is no evidence to support the superiority of surgery over continued nonoperative care or no treatment. New evidence also suggests that the prognosis of tennis elbow is not influenced by the duration of symptoms, and that there is a 50% probability of recovery every three to four months. This finding challenges the belief that failed nonoperative care is an indication for surgery. PURPOSE: The synovial plica of the elbow is a fold of synovial tissue, which is said to be a remnant of the embryonic septa of normal articular development and is located around the radiocapitellar joint. The objective of the present study was to provide morphometric properties of the synovial plica of the elbow and its relation to surrounding structures in asymptomatic patients. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted to establish the morphometric characteristics of the synovial plica of the elbow. The results of 216 consecutive patients, who for different reasons during the five year period of time underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of an elbow, were analyzed. RESULTS: Plica was found in a total of 161 of 216 elbows (74.5%). The mean width of the plica was set to be 3.00 mm (SD: 1.39). The mean length of the plica was established at 2.91 mm (SD: 1.13). An analysis of sexual dimorphism was also included. Potential correlations were analyzed for each of the categories and age. CONCLUSIONS: The synovial plica of the elbow is a clinically relevant anatomical structure. Analyzing the morphometric parameters of the synovial plica is necessary to properly evaluate synovial plica syndrome, which can commonly be confused with other sources of lateral elbow pain such as tennis elbow, oppression of the radial and/or posterior interosseous nerve, or snapping of the triceps tendon. The authors suggest that the thickness of the plica may not be the golden diagnostic feature as there are no statistically significant differences in this parameter between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. A precise and accurate diagnosis of synovial fold syndrome and/or differentiation from other sources of lateral elbow pain must be performed, as the surgical treatment, even if performed properly, will be unsuccessful because of a misdiagnosed source of pain.
