RESUMEN

Rice cultivation in Southeast Asia is a One Health interface intersecting human, animal, and environmental health. This complexity creates a potential for zoonotic transmission between diverse reservoirs. Bats harbor viruses like Nipah; mosquitoes transmit arboviruses; rodents spread hantaviruses. Domestic animals- including pigs with influenza and dogs with rabies and aquatic animals can also transmit pathogens. Climate change and urbanization may further disrupt rice agro-ecologies. This paper explores animal viral reservoirs, vectors, and historical practices associated with risk in rice farming. Climate and land use changes could enhance spillover. Solutions are proposed, including surveillance of animals, vectors, water, and air to detect threats before major outbreaks, such as improved biosecurity, hygiene, and livestock vaccinations. Ecological viral surveillance and agricultural interventions together can reduce zoonotic transmission from rice farming.

Emerging aryl organophosphate esters (aryl-OPEs) have been employed as substitutes for organohalogen flame retardants in recent years; however, their environmental occurrence and associated impacts in urban estuarine sediments have not been adequately investigated, impeding regulatory decision-making. Herein, field-based investigations and modeling based on surface sediment and sediment core analysis were employed to uncover the historical pollution and current environmental impacts of aryl-OPEs in the Pearl River Estuary, South China. Our results revealed a substantial increase in aryl-OPE emission, particularly emerging aryl-OPEs, through sediment transport to the estuary since the 2000s. The emerging aryl-OPEs comprised 83% of the total annual input in the past decade, with an average annual input of 155,000 g. Additionally, the emerging-to-traditional aryl-OPE concentration ratios increased with decreasing distance from the shore, peaking in the highly urbanized riverine outlets. These findings indicate that inventories of emerging aryl-OPEs are likely increasing in estuarine sediments and their emissions are surpassing those of traditional aryl-OPEs. Our risk-based priority screening approach indicates that some emerging aryl-OPEs, particularly bisphenol A bis(diphenyl phosphate), can pose a higher environmental risk than traditional aryl-OPEs in estuarine sediments. Overall, our study highlights the importance of recognizing the environmental impacts of emerging aryl-OPEs.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is an important crop worldwide, contributing to about one third of the global caloric intake. In June 2021, leaves with bacterial blight symptoms, including yellow and necrotic lesions running parallel to veins, were found in several fields across five counties in eastern Colorado (Weld, Morgan, Sedgwick, Baca, and Kit Carson). Plants exhibiting these symptoms were scattered throughout fields, but symptoms appeared consistent across counties. To determine the causal agent and complete Koch's postulates, a 1 cm2 symptomatic leaf area was excised and macerated in 0.5 mL of sterilized water from four field samples. The lysate was spread on yeast extract dextrose calcium carbonate medium (YDC agar, 1% yeast extract, 2% dextrose, 2% calcium carbonate, 1.5% agar) to isolate bacteria. Single colonies of yellow, mucoid morphology were selected and streaked on new YDC plates. Isolate genomic DNA was extracted (Zymo Research Quick-DNA Fungal/Bacterial Miniprep Kit, #D6005), and ~30 ng of gDNA was used to amplify the 16S rRNA, gyrB, and rpoB genes of all four isolates (Barret et al., 2015; Delétoile et al., 2009; Krawczyk et al., 2020; Ogier et al., 2019). Amplified PCR products were cleaned (Zymo DNA Clean & Concentrator kit, #D4033) and Sanger sequenced, and all sequences have been deposited in NCBI (16S rRNA: OR707336, OR707337, OR707338, OR707339), (gyrB: PP407951, PP407952, PP407953, PP407954), (rpoB: PP407955, PP407956, PP407957, PP407958). A BLAST search against whole genomes identified one isolate from Kit Carson county (CO314) and two isolates from Baca county (CO316 and CO317) as Pantoea agglomerans with 100% identity for the 16S rRNA, gyrB, and rpoB genes, and one isolate from Weld county (CO315) was 100% identical to Pantoea allii for all three genes. To complete Koch's postulates and confirm Pantoea sp. as the causal disease agents, isolates were grown as lawns on DifcoTM Nutrient Agar (NA) medium (48h, 28℃), suspended in 10 mM MgCl2 using a final optical density of 0.1 (~109 colony forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL)), and syringe-infiltrated into the entire leaf area of 10-day-old wheat seedling leaves (var. Hatcher). Treatments of 10mM MgCl2 and a field isolate that does not cause symptoms, identified as Pseudomonas synxantha by 16S rRNA and gyrB sequencing, were negative controls. Inoculated wheat plants were transferred to a growth chamber (22℃, 90% relative humidity). Symptoms developed 14 days post inoculation (dpi), with the most severe appearing 21 dpi. Each of the four Pantoea isolates were re-isolated from symptomatic leaves by grinding them in a Tissue Lyser II (Qiagen) with two metal beads and diluting with 0.4 mL of sterile water. A 20 µL sample of each isolate was plated on NA (24h, 28℃). The colonies appeared phenotypically identical to the original isolates, and Sanger sequencing confirmed the identities of the isolates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. agglomerans causing disease in wheat in the United States, and the first report of P. allii as a wheat disease-causing agent. This report is consistent with previous communications showing P. agglomerans causing wheat disease in China (Gao et al., 2023), and P. ananatis in Poland (Krawczyk et al., 2020). The growing numbers of reports of Pantoea spp. as pathogens in recent years suggests increasing novel disease emergence on cereals worldwide.

This research examines advancements in the development of process-based models of constructed wetlands (CWs) tailored for simulating conventional water quality parameters (CWQPs). Despite the promising potential of CWs for emerging organic contaminant (EOC) removal, the available CW models do not yet integrate EOC removal processes. This study explores the need and possibility of integrating EOCs into existing CW models. Nevertheless, a few researchers have developed process-based models of other wastewater treatment systems (e.g., activated sludge systems) to simulate certain EOCs. The EOC removal processes observed in other wastewater treatment systems are analogous to those in CWs. Therefore, the corresponding equations governing these processes can be tailored and integrated into existing CW models, similarly to what was done successfully in the past for CWQPs. This study proposed the next generation of CW models, which outlines 12 areas for future work: integrating EOC removal processes; ensuring data availability for model calibration and validation; considering quantitative and sensitive parameters; quantifying microorganisms in CWs; modifying biofilm dynamics models; including pH, aeration, and redox potential; integrating clogging and plant sub-models; modifying hydraulic sub-model; advancing computer technology and programming; and maintaining a balance between simplicity and complexity. These suggestions provide valuable insights for enhancing the design and operational features of current process-based models of CWs, facilitating improved simulation of CWQPs, and integration of EOCs into the modelling framework.

The intensification of livestock farming can pose risks to the environment due to the increased use of veterinary products and the generation of waste in confined areas. The quality of water bodies near livestock establishments (Areco River (A) and Doblado stream (D), San Antonio de Areco, Buenos Aires, Argentina) was studied by physicochemical parameters, metals, pesticides, emerging contaminants, and lethal and sublethal toxicity (neurotoxicity and oxidative stress) in larvae of the native amphibian Rhinella arenarum. Six sites were selected: upstream (S1A and S1D), at the level (S2A and S2D), and downstream (S3A and S3D) from the establishments. A low concentration of dissolved oxygen was observed in Doblado stream (< 2.34 mg/L). Cu, Mn, V, and Zn exceeded the limits for the protection of aquatic life at various sites. Between 24 and 34 pesticides were detected in all sites, with 2,4-D, atrazine, and metolachlor being the most recurrent. In water and sediment, the concentrations of ivermectin (S2A, 1.32 µg/L and 58.18 µg/kg; S2D, 0.8 µg/L and 85.22 µg/kg) and oxytetracycline (S2A, < 1 mg/L and < 1 mg/kg; S2D, 11.8 mg/L and 39 mg/kg) were higher at sites near the establishments. All sites caused between 30 and 38.3% of lethality and produced neurotoxicity and alterations in the reduced glutathione content. Moreover, larvae exposed to samples from all sites incorporated ivermectin. These results demonstrate the degradation of the studied sites in relation to the agricultural activities of the area, highlighting the need to take measures to protect and preserve aquatic ecosystems.

In this study, laboratory-scale cultivation of T. chuii and D. tertiolecta was conducted using Conway, F/2, and TMRL media to evaluate their biochemical composition and economic costs. The highest cell density (30.36 × 106 cells/mL) and dry weight (0.65 g/L) for T. chuii were achieved with Conway medium. This medium also produced biomass with maximum lipid content (25.65%), proteins (27.84%), and total carbohydrates (8.45%) compared with F/2 and TMRL media. D. tertiolecta reached a maximum cell density of 17.50 × 106 cells/mL in F/2 medium, which was notably lower than that of T. chuii. Furthermore, the media cost varied from US$0.23 to US$0.74 for each 1 L of media, primarily due to the addition of Na3PO4, KNO3, and cyanocobalamin. Thus, biomass production rates varied between US$38.81 and US$128.80 per kg on a dry weight basis. These findings comprehensively compare laboratory conditions and the costs associated with biomass production in different media. Additionally, this study explored the potential of T. chuii and D. tertiolecta strains, as well as their consortia with bacteria, for the degradation of various emerging pollutants (EPs), including caffeine, salicylic acid, DEET, imidacloprid, MBT, cimetidine, venlafaxine, methylparaben, thiabendazole, and paracetamol. Both microalgal strains demonstrated effective degradation of EPs, with enhanced degradation observed in microalgae-bacterial consortia. These results suggest that the symbiotic relationship between microalgae and bacteria can be harnessed for the bioremediation of EPs, thereby offering valuable insights into the environmental applications of microalgal cultivation.

Despite not displaying higher overall rates of substance use compared to White Americans, the social consequences of substance use disorders for Black Americans, particularly among Black American men, are more damaging. Furthermore, recent data suggest an uptick in substance use-related deaths among Black Americans, raising serious concerns about a growing health disparity that warrants the need for studies to identify factors associated with prevention. For decades, Black cultural theorists have argued that Afrocentric norms are important buffers against maladaptive behaviors in Black Americans, but the association in the context of substance use is still an emerging area. The present study investigated the associations between Afrocentric norms, Afrocentric self-regard, internalized negative stereotypes, and substance use attitudes and behaviors among Black young adults. Self-report questionnaires were administered to measure internalized negative stereotypes, Afrocentric norms, Afrocentric self-regard, substance use attitudes, and substance use from a sample of Black young adults (N = 619). Favorable attitudes toward substance use were found to be positively associated with internalized negative stereotypes but were inversely associated with Afrocentric norms and Afrocentric self-regard. Similarly, substance use reports within the past 30 days were inversely associated with Afrocentric norms, but the relationship to cannabis use was non-significant. Gender differences between Black men and women were also found. Implications for social work are discussed.

UV filters and benzotriazole UV stabilizers are considered emerging contaminants in the environment. LC-MS/MS and GC-MS methods, involving a single solid phase extraction protocol, were developed and validated to determine eight UV filters and seven UV stabilizers, respectively in wastewater from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Lüneburg, Germany. The LC-MS/MS method exhibited extraction recoveries of ≥ 71% at six different fortification levels with limits of detection (LODs) range of 0.02 ng mL-1 - 0.09 ng mL-1. Extraction recoveries of 47 to 119% at six different fortification levels were obtained for the GC-MS method with LODs range of 0.01 - 0.09 ng mL-1. Among the UV filters, the highest mean concentration was determined for octocrylene (OCR) in influent (3.49 ng mL-1) while the highest mean concentration was measured for 2-hydroxy-4-octyloxybenzophenone (UV 531) in influent (0.44 ng mL-1) among the UV stabilizers. Potential risk to aquatic organisms was assessed by the risk quotient approach. Only OCR presented a high risk to aquatic invertebrates whereas 2-ethylhexyl 4-methoxycinnamate (EHMC) and 2-ethylhexyl salicylate (EHS) posed high risks to algae. Benzotriazole UV stabilizers presented negligible risks to aquatic invertebrates and fish. This work reports the detection of rarely studied 4-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and UV 531 in WWTP influent and effluent. The occurrence and risk assessment of target benzotriazole UV stabilizers in wastewater from a German WWTP was demonstrated for the first time.

Persimmons are widely acknowledged as a valuable source of both medicinal and nutritional components, providing a diverse spectrum of nutrients and phytochemicals. Despite these benefits, biases against persimmons persists due to their characteristic astringent flavor that sets them apart from other fruits. Although several studies have explored various aspects of persimmons, a comprehensive review that addresses post-harvest challenges, processing innovations, and potential applications is notably absent in the literature. This review aims to fill this gap by discussing a range of topics, including emerging preservation technologies, methods for detecting and eliminating astringency, identification of functional elements, health-promoting prospects, and advancements in processed persimmon products. The primary objective is to enhance the utilization of persimmons and promote the development of diverse, customized products, thereby fostering the emergence of functional and futuristic foods.

Gram-negative bacteremia in hospitalized patients often leads to prolonged hospital stays, increased healthcare costs, and mortality rates. Simultaneously, the presence of comorbidities like chronic wounds increases the risk of severe infection and complicated hospital courses involving amputation, broad-spectrum antibiotic use, and repeat hospital admissions, after discharge. This case presents a 72-year-old male with a past medical history significant for chronic lower extremity cellulitis with multiple prior hospitalizations. On admission, the patient had a chief complaint of progressively worsening left lower extremity pain along with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. CT imaging of the left lower extremity suggested severe cellulitis without signs of osteomyelitis. Blood cultures initially suggested Corynebacterium jeikeium, but were sent to an outside facility due to ambiguity of results. The outside facility identified the pathogen as Ignatzschineria indica. After confirming the results, antibiotics were appropriately de-escalated to oral levofloxacin. The patient continued to show clinical improvement and was discharged with follow-up appointments scheduled for infectious disease and bi-weekly visits to wound care. Considering the increasing prevalence of chronic wounds in the United States, awareness and recognition of emerging pathogens are crucial for the timely diagnosis, treatment, and management of these complex patients. Our case adds to the growing body of reports on the management of I. indica bacteremia resulting from maggot-infested wounds.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum) loses 21.5% yield to pests and diseases annually (Savary et al. 2019). Among the wheat diseases, bacterial leaf streak (BLS) is a growing problem, costing $78.5 million in losses (https://cropprotectionnetwork.org/). In July 2022, we sampled winter wheat leaf samples at Volga (44.30, -96.92), South Dakota, USA with an estimated disease incidence of 40% (n=100). The typical symptoms were water-soaking with large necrotic and chlorotic streaks extending the length of the leaves and were strikingly similar to BLS. To isolate the pathogen, leaves were cut lengthwise into 1 cm pieces and surface-sterilized using a 10% NaOCl solution for 3 min, followed by 70% ethanol for 3 min, and then rinsed with sterile distilled water and placed in 500 ul of sterile distilled water for 5 min and using a sterile loop the water was streaked over a plate of Nutrient Agar (NA). Following Duveiller et al. (1997), the streaked plate was incubated in the dark at 28℃ for 48 h. Observed single colonies were sub-cultured thrice onto fresh NA plates to obtain a pure culture. We named the culture SD101. Bacteria were found to be gram-negative with a colony morphology initially raised, smooth, and white that later turned yellow. DNA was extracted using the Wizard HMW DNA Extraction Kit (Promega, Madison, WI) following the manufacturer's protocol, and sequenced using Nanopore MinION R9.4 (Oxford Nanopore Technology). We used the Rapid Annotation Using Subsystems Technology approach (Aziz eal. 2008) to extract the 16S rDNA, DNA gyrase subunit B (gyrB), and translation initiation factor IF-2 (infB) gene sequences that were deposited in GenBank under accession numbers PP329908.1 for 16S rDNA, PP496481 for infB, and PP328920.1 for gyrB. Homology analysis using CLC Genomics Workbench 22.0.2 (QIAGEN) and BLASTn against the GenBank nucleotide database resulted in a 99.74% match (1543/ 1547 bp) of the 16S sequence, 99.59% match (2674/ 2685 bp) of the infB sequence, and 99.42% match (2396/ 2410 bp) of the gyrB sequence with Pantoea ananatis strain AJ13355 (AP012032). To test pathogenicity, seeds of spring wheat breeding line SD4892 were planted in 30 cm × 30 cm pots in a greenhouse under a 16 h light photoperiod. The inoculum was prepared from 48-h-old NA plates of SD101 rinsed with 1X Phosphate Buffer Saline (PBS buffer), adjusted to an OD600 = 1.0, and amended with two drops of Tween 20 (polyoxyethylene sorbitol ester, Millipore Sigma). PBS with Tween 20 was used as a negative control. The inoculum was sprayed on 15 replicates of 15-day-old seedlings, kept at 95% relative humidity for 48 h, then moved to the greenhouse at 23 to 25°C. The symptoms appeared as water soaking that later turned to necrotic streaks with surrounding chlorosis on all 15 inoculated plants while control plants remained healthy. The pathogen was re-isolated from the leaves as described above. The 16S rDNA, infB, and gyrB sequences amplified and sequenced were identical to the gene sequences from the whole genome sequencing. The experiment was repeated with the same results, completing Koch's postulates. Although P. ananatis is pathogenic on corn, rice, and other plant species in the United States (Coutinho et al. 2009), and was reported pathogenic on wheat in Poland (Krawczyk et al. 2020), this is the first report of its pathogenicity on wheat in the United States. The prevalence, and incidence of BLS disease caused by P. ananatis in wheat is needed to estimate its threat to wheat production and to develop management strategies.

Timely and precise detection of emerging infections is imperative for effective outbreak management and disease control. Human mobility significantly influences the spatial transmission dynamics of infectious diseases. Spatial sampling, integrating the spatial structure of the target, holds promise as an approach for testing allocation in detecting infections, and leveraging information on individuals' movement and contact behavior can enhance targeting precision. This study introduces a spatial sampling framework informed by spatiotemporal analysis of human mobility data, aiming to optimize the allocation of testing resources for detecting emerging infections. Mobility patterns, derived from clustering point-of-interest and travel data, are integrated into four spatial sampling approaches at the community level. We evaluate the proposed mobility-based spatial sampling by analyzing both actual and simulated outbreaks, considering scenarios of transmissibility, intervention timing, and population density in cities. Results indicate that leveraging inter-community movement data and initial case locations, the proposed Case Flow Intensity (CFI) and Case Transmission Intensity (CTI)-informed spatial sampling enhances community-level testing efficiency by reducing the number of individuals screened while maintaining a high accuracy rate in infection identification. Furthermore, the prompt application of CFI and CTI within cities is crucial for effective detection, especially in highly contagious infections within densely populated areas. With the widespread use of human mobility data for infectious disease responses, the proposed theoretical framework extends spatiotemporal data analysis of mobility patterns into spatial sampling, providing a cost-effective solution to optimize testing resource deployment for containing emerging infectious diseases.

This study investigated the novel application of Fe-TiO2-allophane catalysts with 6.0 % w/w of iron oxide and two TiO2 proportions (10 % and 30 % w/w) for degrading atrazine (ATZ) using the heterogeneous dual-effect (HDE) process under sunlight. Comparative analyses with Fe-allophane and TiO2-allophane catalysts were conducted in both photocatalysis (PC) and HDE processes. FTIR spectra reveal the unique hydrous feldspathoids structure of allophane, showing evidence of new bond formation between Si-O groups of allophane clays and iron hydroxyl species, as well as Si-O-Ti bonds that intensified with higher TiO2 content. The catalysts exhibited an anatase structure. In Fe-TiO2-allophane catalysts, iron oxide was incorporated through the substitution of Ti4+ by Fe3+ in the anatase crystal lattice and precipitation on the surface of allophane clays, forming small iron oxide particles. Allophane clays reduced the agglomeration and particle size of TiO2, resulting in an enhanced specific surface area and pore volume for all catalysts. Iron oxide incorporation decreased the band gap, broadening the photoresponse to visible light. In the PC process, TiO2-allophane achieves 90 % ATZ degradation, attributed to radical species from the UV component of sunlight. In the HDE process, Fe-TiO2-allophane catalysts exhibit synergistic effects, particularly with 30 % w/w TiO2, achieving 100 % ATZ degradation and 85 % COD removal, with shorter reaction time as TiO2 percentage increased. The HDE process was performed under less acidic conditions, achieving complete ATZ degradation after 6 h without iron leaching. Consequently, Fe-TiO2-allophane catalysts are proposed as a promising alternative for degrading emerging pollutants under environmentally friendly conditions.

Yancheng coastal wetland, the largest coastal wetland in the west coast of the Pacific Ocean and the margin of the Asian continent, has significant environmental, economic and social effects on local human beings. The extensive contamination and potential risk of quinolone antibiotics (QNs) on local aquaculture and human health are still not clear until now. In this study, 52 surface sediment samples were collected to investigate the contamination status and polluted sources, and evaluate ecological risks of QNs in the south of Yancheng coastal wetland. The total contents of QNs ranged from 0.33 to 21.60 ng/g dw (mean value of 4.51 ng/g dw), following the detection frequencies of QNs ranging from 19.23 to 94.23%. The highest content of QNs occurred around an aquaculture pond dominated by flumequine. The total organic carbon contents of sediment were positively correlated with sarafloxacin and lomefloxacin (p < 0.05), indicating the enhanced absorption of these QNs onto sediments. Partial QNs, such as lomefloxacin, enrofloxacin, sarafloxacin and flumequine, presented the homology features originating from the emission of medical treatment and aquaculture. RESUMEN

Extravasation, the unintended leakage of intravenously administered substances, poses significant challenges in cancer treatment, particularly during chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This comprehensive review explores the pathophysiology, incidence, risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnosis, prevention strategies, management approaches, complications, and long-term effects of extravasation in cancer patients. It also outlines future directions and research opportunities, including identifying gaps in the current knowledge and proposing areas for further investigation in extravasation prevention and management. Emerging technologies and therapies with the potential to improve extravasation prevention and management in both chemotherapy and radiotherapy are highlighted. Such innovations include advanced vein visualization technologies, smart catheters, targeted drug delivery systems, novel topical treatments, and artificial intelligence-based image analysis. By addressing these aspects, this review not only provides healthcare professionals with insights to enhance patient safety and optimize clinical practice but also underscores the importance of ongoing research and innovation in improving outcomes for cancer patients experiencing extravasation events.

The Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) technology offers a technically attractive way for hydrogen storage. If LOHC systems were to fully replace liquid fossil fuels, they would need to be handled at the multi-million tonne scale. To date, LOHC systems on the market based on toluene or benzyltoluene still offer potential for improvements. Thus, it is of great interest to investigate potential LOHCs that promise better performance and environmental/human hazard profiles. In this context, we investigated the acute aquatic toxicity of oxygen-containing LOHC (oxo-LOHC) systems. Toxic Ratio (TR) values of oxo-LOHC compounds classify them baseline toxicants (0.1 < TR < 10). Additionally, the mixture toxicity test conducted with D. magna suggests that the overall toxicity of a benzophenone-based system can be accurately predicted using a concentration addition model. The estimation of bioconcentration factors (BCF) through the use of the membrane-water partition coefficient indicates that oxo-LOHCs are unlikely to be bioaccumulative (BCF < 2000). None of the oxo-LOHC compounds exhibited hormonal disrupting activities at the tested concentration of 2 mg/L in yeast-based reporter gene assays. Therefore, the oxo-LOHC systems seem to pose a low level of hazard and deserve more attention in ongoing studies searching for the best hydrogen storage technologies.

Vaccination has proven to be an effective means of controlling pathogens in animals. Since the introduction of veterinary vaccines in the 19th century, several generations of vaccines have been introduced. These vaccines have had a positive impact on global animal health and production. Despite, the success of veterinary vaccines, there are still some pathogens for which there are no effective vaccines available, such as African swine fever. Further, animal health is under the constant threat of emerging and re-emerging pathogens, some of which are zoonotic and can pose a threat to human health. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has highlighted the need for new vaccine platforms that are safe and efficacious, but also importantly, are adaptable and can be modified rapidly to match the circulating pathogens. mRNA vaccines have been shown to be an effective vaccine platform against various viral and bacterial pathogens. This review will cover some of the recent advances in the field of mRNA vaccines for veterinary species. Moreover, various mRNA vaccines and their delivery methods, as well as their reported efficacy, will be discussed. Current limitations and future prospects of this vaccine platform in veterinary medicine will also be discussed.

BACKGROUND: Research indicates harmful associations between parental weight-focused conversations and markers of pediatric health and well-being. However, little is known about the prevalence and consequences of parent conversations focused on weight or health behaviors (i.e., physical activity or nutrition) with emerging adult children. METHODS: Data are from the 2018 follow-up survey of the population-based EAT 2010-2018 (Eating and Activity over Time) in cohort from Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN. Participants were emerging adults at follow-up with ages 18-26. Regression models adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics were conducted. RESULTS: Over two-thirds (68%) of mothers and 44% of fathers engaged in weight-focused conversations with their emerging adult children; 25% of both parents reported engaging in conversations focused only on health behaviors; and 8% of mothers and 26% of fathers reported not engaging in either type of conversation. Health-focused conversations by both parents were associated with lower body mass index (BMI) and disordered eating behaviors, higher intake of fruit and vegetables, and psychosocial well-being in emerging adult children. Weight-focused conversations with both parents were associated with higher BMI and disordered eating behaviors in emerging adults. There were gender moderated associations of paternal conversations about weight and health with vegetable intake, binge eating, and depressive symptoms. DISCUSSION: The high prevalence and negative health outcomes associated with weight-focused conversations coupled with the low prevalence and positive health outcomes associated with health-focused conversations by parents suggests the need for public health messaging and intervention development aimed at reducing parental weight talk with emerging adult children.

(1) Background: Emerging adulthood, from the age of 18 to 29 years, is a crucial phase for individuals with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, as it affects their Health-Related Quality of Life. (2) Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzes the influence of the Mediterranean diet, Diabetes duration, Hemoglobin A1c, and sleep disorders on Health-Relate Quality of Life in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. In this study, conducted in Andalusia, Spain, 362 emerging adults with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus completed the Oviedo Sleep Questionnaire, the Adaptation of Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener, and the Vida con Diabetes Tipo 1 (ViDa1) Health-Related Quality of Life questionnaire between October 2021 and July 2022. Pearson correlation coefficients and a multiple regression analysis were conducted for each Health-Related Quality of Life in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus dimension (Interference with Life, Well-being, Self-care, and Concern about the Condition) for overall sample and separately for males and females. (3) Results: Different and significant correlations are found among factors such as Age, Body Mass Index, Currently being a student, Hemoglobin A1c, Sleep satisfaction, Insomnia, Hypersomnolence, and Adherence to Mediterranean diet. Notably, Insomnia is a main predictor for Interference with Life, Well-being, and Concern about the Condition, especially for females. (4) Conclusions: Insomnia is the main predictor of Health-Related Quality of Life in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus among Andalusian emerging adults with this condition. Consequently, a regular assessment of sleep and Health-Related Quality of Life from a gender perspective in this age group is crucial.

Background: "Kratom" refers to an array of bioactive products derived from Mitragyna speciosa, a tree indigenous to Southeast Asia. Most kratom consumers report analgesic and stimulatory effects, and common reasons for use are to address mental and physical health needs, manage pain, and to reduce use of other substances. Natural-history studies and survey studies suggest that many kratom consumers perceive benefits from those uses, but such studies are unlikely to capture the full range of kratom-use experiences. Methods: We collected text data from Reddit posts from 2020-2022 to qualitatively examine conceptualizations, motivations, effects, and consequences associated with kratom use among people posting to social media. Reddit posts mentioning kratom were studied using template thematic analysis, which included collecting descriptions of kratom product types and use practices. Network analyses of coded themes was performed to examine independent relationships among themes, and between themes and product types. Results: Codes were applied to 329 of the 370 posts that comprised the final sample; 134 posts contained kratom product descriptions. As Reddit accounts were functionally anonymous, demographic estimates were untenable. Themes included kratom physical dependence (tolerance, withdrawal, or use to avoid withdrawal), perceived addiction (net detrimental effects on functioning), and quitting. Extract products were positively associated with reports of perceived addiction, dependence, and experiences of quitting kratom. Many used kratom for energy and self-treatment of pain, fatigue, and problems associated with opioid and alcohol; they perceived these uses as effective. Consumers expressed frustrations about product inconsistencies and lack of product information. Conclusion: As in previous studies, kratom was deemed helpful for some and a hindrance to others, but we also found evidence of notable negative experiences with kratom products that have not been well documented in surveys. Daily kratom use may produce mild-moderate physical dependence, with greater severity being possibly more common with concentrated extracts; however, there are currently no human laboratory studies of concentrated kratom extracts. Such studies, and detailed kratom product information, are needed to help inform consumer decision-making.
