Wound healing is a complex and coordinated process involving interactions between cells and various messenger systems. This study conducted in vivo tests to determine the healing effect of propolis (PR)-based cream derived from the Amazon stingless bee, Scaptotrigona aff. postica, reared in açaí (Euterpe oleracea) monoculture, on induced wounds in rats. Data were obtained by monitoring injuries on 14 Wistar rats, divided into three groups (G1, G2 and G3), each receiving specific treatments: propolis-based cream (PR), collagenase (PC) and neutral cream (NC). Over the seven days of treatment, the lesions were measured using photographic records and ImageJ software to evaluate the healing effectiveness of the test cream. ImageJ software version 1.53g was used to compare the wound diameters for each treatment. After seven days, histopathological analyses of the induced lesions were performed. It was observed that collagenase (PC) and the test cream (PR) did not differ significantly in terms of wound diameter reduction. However, the propolis-based cream directly influenced the lesion maturation process and exhibited a milder inflammatory response compared to the positive control (PC). This effect is possibly associated with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory compounds identified by GC/MS analysis in the propolis. Notably, this is the first report describing propolis of Scaptotrigona aff. postica obtained from açaí monocultures with strong healing potential, highlighting the identification of a high concentration of phenolic compounds that aid directly in wound repair.

There is increasing pressure for innovative methods to treat compromised and difficult-to-heal wounds. Consequently, new strategies are needed for faster healing, reducing infection, hydrating the wound, stimulating healing mechanisms, accelerating wound closure, and reducing scar formation. In this scenario, lectins present as good candidates for healing agents. Lectins are a structurally heterogeneous group of glycosylated or non-glycosylated proteins of non-immune origin, which can recognize at least one specific monosaccharide or oligosaccharide specific for the reversible binding site. Cell surfaces are rich in glycoproteins (glycosidic receptors) that potentially interact with lectins through the number of carbohydrates reached. This lectin-cell interaction is the molecular basis for triggering various changes in biological organisms, including healing mechanisms. In this context, this review aimed to (i) provide a comprehensive overview of relevant research on the potential of vegetable lectins for wound healing and tissue regeneration processes and (ii) discuss future perspectives.

Los tratamientos periodontales implican cortes y sangrado de la mucosa gingival; la Morinda citrifolia, específicamente sobre los fragmentos encargados de la cicatrización (plaquetas), tiene un efecto más significativo en los procesos curativos de las lesiones. Objetivo. Identificar el potencial cicatrizante de los extractos hidroalcohólicos de Morinda citrifolia (noni peruano) en los procesos regenerativos de las incisiones periodontales al 70% a diversas concentraciones (1%; 5; y 10%) y su efecto coadyuvante acelerador en la vía oral como curación de tejidos. Materiales y Métodos. Se realizó una investigación aplicada, bajo el diseño experimental. Para ello, se llevó a cabo un estudio previo para el análisis farmacognóstico, porcentaje de humedad, pruebas de solubilidad y el análisis fitoquímico cualitativo para garantizar que el análisis farmacológico y la prueba experimental se completaran adecuadamente. Se administraron dosis a cinco ratas albinas macho Holtzman divididas en cuatro grupos a los cuales se les aplicó las concentraciones en cantidades de 0,5 ml dos veces al día en la incisión, la cual se evaluó durante siete días para obtener parámetros específicos, como infección, tono de piel gingival, cierre de heridas, reducción del tamaño de la incisión y porcentaje de curación. Resultados. Indicaron que todos los grupos que se le suministró el extracto hidroalcohólico al 70% en varias concentraciones mejoró su actividad curativa al reducir el tamaño de la incisión en la encía al séptimo día, donde resultó que la mejor concentración fue del 5% en comparación con las otras concentraciones (1% y 10%). Investigación que indica la eficacia de la Morinda citrifolia peruana como acelerador del proceso de curación en la terapia periodontal.
Periodontal treatments involve cuts and bleeding of the gingival mucosa; Morinda citrifolia, specifically on the fragments in charge of healing (platelets), has a more significant effect on the healing processes of the lesions. Objective. To identify the healing potential of hydroalcoholic extracts of Morinda citrifolia (Peruvian noni) in the regenerative processes of periodontal incisions at 70% at various concentrations (1%; 5; and 10%) and its accelerating coadjuvant effect in the oral route as tissue healing. Materials and Methods. An applied research was carried out under an experimental design. For this purpose, a previous study was carried out for pharmacognostic analysis, moisture percentage, solubility tests and qualitative phytochemical analysis to ensure that the pharmacological analysis and experimental test were properly completed. Doses were administered to five male Holtzman albino rats divided into four groups to which the concentrations were applied in 0.5 ml amounts twice daily to the incision, which was evaluated for seven days for specific parameters, such as infection, gingival skin tone, wound closure, incision size reduction and percentage healing. Results. They indicated that all groups that were given the 70% hydroalcoholic extract in various concentrations improved their healing activity by reducing the size of the gingival incision on the seventh day, where it turned out that the best concentration was 5% compared to the other concentrations (1% and 10%). Conclusion. Research indicating the efficacy of Peruvian Morinda citrifolia as an accelerator of the healing process in periodontal therapy.
Os tratamentos periodontais envolvem corte e sangramento da mucosa gengival; a Morinda citrifolia, especificamente sobre os fragmentos responsáveis pela cicatrização (plaquetas), tem um efeito mais significativo nos processos de cicatrização das lesões. Objetivo. Identificar o potencial cicatrizante de extratos hidroalcoólicos de Morinda citrifolia (noni peruano) nos processos regenerativos de incisões periodontais a 70% em diversas concentrações (1%; 5; e 10%) e seu efeito coadjuvante acelerador na via oral como cicatrizante tecidual. Materiais e métodos. Foi realizada uma pesquisa aplicada sob um desenho experimental. Para esse fim, foi realizado um pré-estudo para análise farmacognóstica, porcentagem de umidade, testes de solubilidade e análise fitoquímica qualitativa para garantir que a análise farmacológica e o teste experimental fossem adequadamente concluídos. Cinco ratos albinos Holtzman machos divididos em quatro grupos foram dosados e as concentrações foram aplicadas em quantidades de 0,5 ml duas vezes ao dia na incisão, que foi avaliada por sete dias quanto a parâmetros específicos, como infecção, tônus gengivais da pele, fechamento da ferida, redução do tamanho da incisão e porcentagem de cicatrização. Resultados. Eles indicaram que todos os grupos que receberam extrato hidroalcoólico a 70% em várias concentrações melhoraram sua atividade de cicatrização ao reduzir o tamanho da incisão gengival no sétimo dia, sendo que a melhor concentração foi de 5% em comparação com as outras concentrações (1% e 10%). Conclusão. A pesquisa indica a eficácia da Morinda citrifolia peruana como um acelerador do processo de cicatrização na terapia periodontal.

Background: Annatto was obtained from seed B orellana (urucum) and is commonly used in food and cosmetic industries. The objective of this study was to identify the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of the aqueous extract from urucum seeds and its skin healing potential in exposed cutaneous lesions in rats treated with the gel containing the extract. Methods: Three types of extracts from seeds were made using chloroform, sodium hydroxide, water, and estimated bixin and norbixin. In the presence of antioxidants, antibacterial was observed and then evaluated the skin healing in rats using aqueous extract. Results: Annatto dyes have been evaluated in all three extracts. When the seeds were extracted with chloroform, bixin was detected. If extraction was performed by sodium hydroxide or water, norbixin was detected. For healing use, 10% of aqueous extract was mixed in a gel base. The finding obtained from the antioxidant assay revealed that the activities of the water extract could be used as a source of polyphenolic compounds. In chloroform extract, the antioxidant was not effective because it has weak radical scavengers. With respect to antimicrobial activity, it has been observed that aqueous extract has more effect. For skin healing assay, a total of 3 study groups were tested: negative control group (gel base), positive control group (fibrinase), and test group (gel with urucum aqueous extract). After 7 days of treatment, animals treated with fibrinase had an improvement of 4.7% in total wound area when compared with the negative control while those treated with urucum aqueous extract presented an improvement of 51.55% in comparison. After 14 days, the total wound area of animals within the test group had a decrease of 94.97% when compared with the negative control (gel base) results while the control group presented an improvement of 56.58% in total wound area. These results indicate that wounds treated with urucum aqueous extract were 38.39% more efficient than fibrinase, a cream used for skin healing. Conclusions: It is possible to conclude that gel with aqueous extract is effective in skin healing in rats, being used as a phytotherapic, besides possessing antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.

Achyrocline satureioides (Lam.) DC extract-loaded nanoemulsions have demonstrated potential for wound healing, with promising effects on keratinocyte proliferation. We carried out the first in vivo investigation of the wound healing activity of a hydrogel containing A. satureioides extract-loaded nanoemulsions. We prepared hydrogels by adding the gelling agent (Carbopol® Ultrez) to extract-loaded nanoemulsions (~250 nm in diameter) obtained by spontaneous emulsification. The final flavonoid content in formulation was close to 1 mg/mL, as estimated by ultra-fast liquid chromatography. Permeation/retention studies using porcine ear skin showed that flavonoids reached deeper layers of pig ear skin when it was damaged (up to 3.2 µg/cm² in the dermis), but did not reach the Franz-type diffusion cell receptor fluid. For healing activity, we performed a dorsal wound model using Wistar rats, evaluating the lesion size, anti-inflammatory markers, oxidative damage, and histology. We found that extract-loaded formulations promoted wound healing by increasing angiogenesis by ~20%, reducing inflammation (tumor necrosis factor α) by ~35%, decreasing lipid damage, and improving the re-epithelialization process in lesions. In addition, there was an increase in the number of blood vessels and hair follicles for wounds treated with the formulation compared with the controls. Our findings indicate that the proposed formulation could be promising in the search for better quality healing and tissue reconstruction.

Generally, Plants have immense potential in the wounds management and treatment.In Chinese herbology, Hibiscus plant is a potent herb and have a good medicinal values but not scientifically approached. The present study aims to investigate the wound healing and antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extract of Hibiscus hirtus Linn.(HH). Wound healing activity was carried out by excision, incision and burn wound models. Antimicrobial activity was determined by cup plate method. Healing rate was assessed from the rate of wound contraction, epithelialization rate, tensile strength, hexosamine and hydroxyproline content. From the obtained results, it was indicated that the wound contraction and increased tensile strength of Hibiscus hirtus extract exhibits potent wound healing capacity. Hexosamine and hydroxyproline expression were also correlative with the pattern of healing observed. Histological observation indicates that the wounds treated with Hibiscus hirtus extract and povidone iodine have reduced scar formation and enhances fibroblast proliferation, angiogenesis, keratinization and epithelialization. The Hibiscus hirtus extract has excellent antimicrobial activity against the various organisms. Wound healing activity of our ethanolic extract of Hibiscus hirtus has shown the good effect which has proved by different physical, histological, biochemical parameters. Significant antimicrobial activity shown may be due to major active constituents present in plant.

A Lippia alba é uma planta medicinal muito utilizada pela população brasileira para o tratamento de diversas doenças. A composição química de seu óleo essencial apresent avariação quantitativa e qualitativa, classificando em quimiotipos. No Ceará, o quimiotipo II é reconhecido pelo óleo essencial de L. alba (OELaII) conter elevados teores de limoneno e citral. A cicatrização de feridas envolve eventos celulares e moleculares que interagem para que ocorra a reconstituição do tecido. A contaminação bacteriana, principalmente por S.aureus, é um dos principais fatores que afeta a cicatrização. O objetivo desse estudo foi investigar o mecanismo de ação do OELaII sobre S. aureus e sua atividade cicatrizante. O mecanismo de ação foi avaliado através de alterações da membrana, na morfologia bacterianae na inibição de fatores de virulência. A ação cicatrizante foi determinada in vivo em modelo experimental de feridas cutâneas através da área da ferida, da contração, da análise clínica,histopatológica e microbiológica. Lippia alba is a medicinal plant widely used by the population for the treatment of variousdiseases. The chemical composition of the essential oil presents quantitative and qualitativevariation, ranking chemotypes. In Ceará, the chemotype II is recognized by the essential oil ofL. alba (OELaII) contain high levels of limonene and citral. Wound healing involves cellularand molecular events that occur interact to tissue reconstitution. Bacterial contamination,mainly by S. aureus is one of the main factors that affect healing. The aim of this study was toinvestigate the mechanism of action of OELaII on S. aureus and its healing activity. Themechanism of action was evaluated through the membrane changes, in bacterial morphologyand inhibition of virulence factors. The healing action was determined in vivo in experimentalskin wounds through the area of the wound contraction, clinical analysis, histological andmicrobiological. Cashew apple is a tropical pseudofruit consumed as juice due to its excellent nutritional and sensory properties. In spite of being well known for its important antioxidant properties, the cashew apple has not been thoroughly investigated for its therapeutic potential. Thereby, this study evaluated the antioxidant capacity, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing activities of cashew apple juice. Juices from ripe and immature cashew apples were analyzed for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Those were evaluated in murine models of xylene-induced ear edema and wound excision. Swiss mice were treated with cashew juice by gavage. Edema thickness was measured and skin lesions were analyzed by planimetry and histology. Both antioxidant content and total antioxidant activity were higher in ripe cashew apple juice (RCAJ) than in unripe cashew apple juice (UNCAJ). The UNCAJ presented the main anti-inflammatory activity by a significant inhibition of ear edema (66.5%) when compared to RCAJ (10%). Moreover, UNCAJ also showed the best result for wound contraction (86.31%) compared to RCAJ (67.54%). Despite of higher antioxidant capacity, RCAJ did not promote better anti-inflammatory, and healing responses, which may be explained by the fact that treatment increased antioxidants level leading to a redox "imbalance" turning down the inflammatory response modulation exerted by reactive oxygen species (ROS). The results suggest that UNCAJ presents a greater therapeutic activity due to a synergistic effect of its phytochemical components, which improve the immunological mechanisms as well as an optimal balance between ROS and antioxidants leading to a better wound healing process.

This study evaluated the antioxidant, antimicrobial and wound healing activities from the aqueous extract of cubiu (AEC - Solanum sessiliflorum Dunal). The antioxidant activity was evaluated by the scavenging method with 2.2-diphenyl-1.2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and, the antimicrobial activity, by the turbidimetric method. The dermal ulcers induced model in rabbits was used in order to study the wound healing activity. Creams containing 5% and 10% AEC and 5% AEC associated with 1% copaiba oil and 1% rosemary oil were tested. The wounds were macroscopically (ulcer aspect and ulcer area contraction) and microscopically examined. The histological study considered the number of inflammatory cells, fibroblasts, blood vessels, collagen and extracellular matrix areas. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's post hoc test was performed. The AEC showed IC50=65.12 µg/mL and no antimicrobial activity against all of the strains tested was verified. The formulation containing 5% AEC associated with 1% copaiba oil exhibited the greatest pharmacological potentiality in dermal wound healing due to the increased number of blood vessels (p <0.001) and the largest extracellular matrix area (p <0.001) presented. The results justify further studies about biological activities of cubiu in the search for bioactive compounds.
O presente estudo avaliou as atividades antioxidante, antimicrobiana e cicatrizante do extrato aquoso do cubiu (EAC - Solanum sessiliflorum Dunal). A atividade antioxidante foi avaliada pelo método sequestrante de radicais 2,2-difenil-1,2-picrilhidrazil (DPPH) e, a atividade antimicrobiana, por método turbidimétrico. Para o estudo da atividade cicatrizante foi utilizado o modelo de indução de úlceras dérmicas em coelhos, sendo testados cremes contendo 5% e 10% de EAC e cremes contendo 5% de EAC associado à 1% de óleo de copaíba e à 1% de óleo de alecrim. As lesões foram analisadas macro (aspecto da lesão e contração da área ferida) e microscopicamente. O estudo histológico considerou o número de células inflamatórias, fibroblastos, vasos sanguíneos, e as áreas de colágeno e de matriz extracelular. Foi realizada análise de variância (ANOVA) seguida do teste post hoc de Tukey. O EAC apresentou IC50=65,12 µg/mL e não apresentou atividade antimicrobiana frente a nenhuma das cepas testadas. A formulação contendo 5% de EAC associado a 1% de óleo de copaíba foi a que exibiu maior potencialidade farmacológica na cicatrização de lesões dérmicas, devido ao maior número de vasos sanguíneos (p<0,001) e a maior área de matriz extracelular (p<0,001) apresentados. Os resultados encontrados justificam novos estudos sobre as atividades biológicas do cubiu na busca de compostos bioativos.

Wound healing activity of the leaf extracts of Ammannia baccifera L., Lythraceae, and Blepharis maderaspatensis (L.) B.Heyne ex Roth., Acanthaceae, was investigated by excision and incision wound healing models in rats. A phytochemical screening was done to determine the major constituents of the chloroform, ethyl acetate and ethanolic fractions of ethanolic leaf extracts. The excision and incision models were used to assess the effect of the plant extracts on wound healing in rats. Phytochemical screening reveals the presence of tannins, saponins, steroids, terpenoids, and flavonoids in the extract. The wound healing effect was comparatively evaluated with a standard drug Framycetin cream. Significant wound healing activity was observed for the creams prepared with 5% ethanol fraction of B. maderaspatensis and 5% chloroform fraction of A. baccifera ethanolic leaf extracts. The results of histopathological evaluation supported the outcome of both incision and excision wound models. Ethanolic fraction of B. maderaspatensis and chloroform fraction of A. baccifera exhibited marked wound healing activity. B. maderaspatensis extract displayed a remarkable wound healing activity compared to A. baccifera.

In recent years, oxidative stress and free radicals have been implicated in impaired wound healing. Abelmoschus manihot (L.) Medik., Malvaceae, and Wrightia tinctoria R. Br., Apocynaceae, plants widely used in Ayurveda, possesses anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. The present study was undertaken to assess the potential of petroleum ether and methanolic extracts in wound healing in Wistar albino rats. The rats were divided into six groups of six animals each. Group 1 is normal wounded control, group 2 received standard drug and the other four groups were treated with two different doses each of petroleum ether and methanolic extract of A. manihot and W. tinctoria. The wound healing parameters were evaluated by using incision wounds in extract-treated rats, standard and controls. Both the doses of petroleum ether and methanolic extract significantly increased wound breaking strength when compared with the control group.
Nos últimos anos, o estresse oxidativo e radicais livres têm sido implicados na cicatrização. Abelmoschus manihot (L.) Medik., Malvaceae e Wrightia tinctoria R. Br., Apocynaceae, plantas utilizadas na medicina Ayurveda, possuem propriedades antiinflamatórias e antimicrobianas. O presente estudo foi realizado para avaliar o potencial dos extratos de éter de petróleo e metanólico na cicatrização de feridas em ratos Wistar. Os ratos foram divididos em seis grupos com seis animais cada. O grupo 1 foi utilizado como controle, o grupo 2 recebeu a droga padrão e os outros quatro grupos foram tratados com duas doses diferentes de cada um dos extratos de A. manihot e W. tinctoria. Os parâmetros de cicatrização foram avaliados através da incisão feridas em ratos tratados com extrato, padrões e controles. Ambas as doses dos extratos de éter de petróleo e metanólico aumentaram significativamente força de ruptura da ferida quando comparados ao grupo controle.
