RESUMEN

Pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma (PSP) is a rare benign pulmonary tumour, most reported cases of PSP are from Eastern Asia, with a female to male ratio of 5:1, and average age at diagnosis in the 5th decade. We present the case of a 63-year-old Caucasian woman diagnosed with PSP who underwent a left lower lobe basal segmentectomy with systematic nodal dissection, performed via video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS).

RESUMEN

Rosai Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare non-Langerhans histiocytic disorder, which belongs to the R group of the 2016 revised histiocytic classification. It's characterized by the accumulation of activated histiocytes in the sinusoids of lymph nodes and/or extranodal tissues. Herein, we report a 7-year-old female who was initially suspected to have a lymphoma but was later identified as having RDD. She presented with a history of fever, night sweats, and weight loss, and on physical examination had bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy. Histologic examination of the biopsied cervical lymph nodes showed distended sinuses with S100 and CD68 immunoreactive histiocytes demonstrating emperipolesis, confirming a diagnosis of RDD. The condition is known to be self-limiting. However, evidence from literature and our case management shows that medical therapy can hasten remission in pediatric cases.

Pilomatricoma is one of the rare skin benign neoplasms arising from the matrix cells of hair follicles. We report the case of a 17-year-old female who had a swelling over the medial surface of the right ear lobule, which was determined to be an epidermal inclusion cyst by radiological and clinical examination. Over the period of eight days, it grew to 2 × 2 cm. A well-defined encapsulated lesion with thick cellular debris was found on an ultrasonography of the local region. Under local anesthesia, the patient had a cyst excision. Early detection by ultrasonography is beneficial in skin lesions to confirm if they are benign or malignant. Complete excision of the cyst is the treatment in order to limit the morbidity and lower the aggressive behavior. In this case, we came to a diagnosis after a histopathological examination, confirming it as a pilomatricoma. Due to its rarity, it is often misdiagnosed.

INTRODUCTION: Anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) is a common surgical intervention for various shoulder pathologies, predominantly glenohumeral osteoarthritis. While generally considered safe and effective, complications remain a challenge. Short stem implants, aim to preserve bone stock and reduce complications. However, concerns about a specific short stem implant (Univers Apex; Arthrex, Naples, FL, USA) have surfaced due to high reported rates relatively early aseptic loosening. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 116 consecutive TSA patients with Univers Apex implants from 2004 to 2022. 15 revision cases were assessed for radiographic loosening, and explanted implants were examined for damage using a 0-3 scale. Histopathological analysis evaluated cellular responses to wear debris. RESULTS: Of the patients, 13% (15/116) required revision at 23.2 months on average. A distinct radiographic loosening pattern was identified, with humeral component subsidence and thinning of the proximal humeral cortex. Histopathology revealed a robust inflammatory response to wear debris, with a potential association between macrophage infiltration, hinge damage, and polyethylene wear. CONCLUSION: This study reveals a notable rate of early aseptic humeral loosening with the Univers Apex short stem implant, emphasizing concerns raised in previous reports and providing a potential explanation for the high rate of early failure. Surgeons should exercise caution and closely monitor patients with this implant design.

Context: Ultrasound (US) is the most economical and widely used method for detecting lesions in parathyroid regions. Identifying typically parathyroid adenomas as hypoechoic nodules with clear margins. However, 10 % of lesions exhibit atypical features, such as the dual concentric sign, and the cognition of them still needs to be improved. Objective: To promote understanding of clinical and histopathological features for parathyroid lesions with the dual concentric echo sign and to investigate its pathogenesis and methods for distinguishing from cervical lymph nodes to improve US diagnostic accuracy. Methods: Retrospectively, patients were categorized into three groups: Group 1, with 36 patients showing parathyroid lesions with dual concentric echo signs; Group 2, with 40 patients displaying classic hypoechoic parathyroid lesions; and Group 3, comprising 36 patients with identified lymph nodes, which were all examined from January 2018 to December 2019. The clinical data on demographics, clinical symptoms, serum levels, histopathologic findings, and US image characteristics were thoroughly reviewed. Results: According to the clinical data, no significant differences in demographics or lesion sizes were observed in Group 1 and Group 2 (p > 0.05). No significant variances were noted in biochemical markers, including PTH, T-25OHD, and ALP. However, a notable difference was identified in adjusted serum calcium levels, which were significantly lower in Group 1 compared to Group 2 (p < 0.05). Additionally, the proportion of asymptomatic patients was significantly higher in Group 1 compared to Group 2 (p < 0.05). Pathological examination revealed that all lesions with dual concentric echo signs were parathyroid adenomas. The isoechoic central region predominantly corresponded to areas of loose edema, while the hypoechoic peripheral layer was primarily associated with chief and/or oncocytic cells. By comparing the ultrasonography of Groups 1 and 3, the parathyroid lesions with dual concentric echo signs exhibited significant distinctions from lymph nodes in size, blood flow classification, vascular distribution, and anatomical location (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The parathyroid lesions with dual concentric echo signs in US corresponded to specific histopathological manifestations and relatively mild clinical features in the patients, this finding may increase the likelihood of incidental detection of parathyroid lesions by US. Attention to the details of size, location, and blood flow, especially, may aid US physicians in differentiating parathyroid adenomas from cervical lymph nodes.

Introduction: Vibrio alginolyticus is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the family of Vibrionaceae, a common pathogen in aquaculture animals, However, studies on its impact on Scylla serrata (mud crabs) are limited. In this study, we isolated V. alginolyticus SWS from dead mud crab during a disease outbreak in a Hong Kong aquaculture farm, which caused up to 70% mortality during summer. Methods: Experimental infection and histopathology were used to investigate the pathogenicity of V. alginolyticus SWS in S. serrata and validate Koch's postulates. Comprehensive whole-genome analysis and phylogenetic analysis antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and biochemical characterization were also performed. Results: Our findings showed that V. alginolyticus SWS caused high mortality (75%) in S. serrata with infected individuals exhibiting inactivity, loss of appetite, decolored and darkened hepatopancreas, gills, and opaque muscle in the claw. Histopathological analysis revealed tissue damage and degeneration in the hepatopancreas, gills, and claw muscle suggesting direct and indirect impacts of V. alginolyticus SWS infection. Conclusions: This study provides a comprehensive characterization of V. alginolyticus SWS as an emerging pathogen in S. serrata aquaculture. Our findings underscore the importance of ongoing surveillance, early detection, and the development of targeted disease management strategies to mitigate the economic impact of vibriosis outbreaks in mud crab aquaculture.

Soft-tissue sarcomas (STSs) are an uncommon and diverse group of cancers, consisting of more than 80 different kinds, each showing unique mesenchymal differentiation as described by the World Health Organization (WHO). The prognostic factors at the time of diagnosis mostly depend on the size, depth, and histological grade of the lymphatic involvement. Improved prognostic indicators are necessary to identify patients at high risk who may derive advantages from adjuvant therapy and those at low risk who might avoid treatment-related side effects. Over a period of five years, a considerable number of patients experience the recurrence of the tumor in the same area or the metastasis of the disease to other parts of the body, even after the complete removal of the localized tumor through surgery. To further personalize and focus medicines, it is critical to enhance prediction accuracy and uncover new therapy targets. This is particularly important considering the high mortality and morbidity rate associated with metastatic STS. The significant diversity of STS poses difficulty in comprehending its pathobiology and in converting biological progress into therapeutic application. This prospective cohort study was carried out at a major university hospital to ascertain adult patients who were diagnosed with STS of the extremities between the period from 2018 to 2023. The inclusion criteria were individuals who were 18 years of age or older with a histological diagnosis of STS. The exclusion criteria encompassed individuals with malignancies other than STS and those with inadequate data on essential factors. Thorough assessments were conducted to analyze patient demographics, tumor features (including site, size, depth, neurovascular or bone invasion), and histologic type and grade (according to the French Federation of Cancer Centers (FNCLCC) grading system). The purpose was to find predictive markers and evaluate results. The results are consistent with previous research and enhance our current knowledge of STS prognosis. Key prognostic markers for metastasis and mortality risk include tumor size larger than 5 cm, histologic grade, and sarcoma subtype. Radical surgical procedures, such as amputation or disarticulation, did not show any survival advantage, probably because they were used in situations where the disease had already progressed locally and had significant involvement in the blood vessels. Histologic grading has been identified as the most important factor in predicting the likelihood of metastasis in adult STSs. The study found that most tumors were of high grade, and there was a statistically significant association between tumor grade, Ki67 levels, and overall survival. A small proportion of patients experienced prolonged longevity beyond five years, emphasizing the connection between early detection, tumors of lesser severity, and enhanced results. These observations emphasize the significance of accurate prognostic assessments and customized therapeutic approaches in the treatment of STS.

BACKGROUND: Palmoplantar psoriasis is a clinical variant of psoriasis characterized by well-defined erythematous desquamating plaques on palms and soles, which may or may not include pustules. Hyperkeratotic lesions of palm and sole commonly include Psoriasis, Eczema and Tinea. These conditions often present with overlapping clinical and histopathological features requiring clinicohistopathological correlation for a conclusive diagnosis. The presence of munro's microabscess or spongiform pustule of kogoj differentiates psoriasis of palm and sole from other hyperkeratotic lesions of palm and sole. The objective of this study was to study the clinical and histopathological profile of palmoplantar psoriasis and correlate clinical diagnosis with histopathological diagnosis. METHOD: A hospital-based, descriptive study was conducted from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2020. Fifty-two patients were clinically diagnosed as palmoplantar psoriasis with or without involving other parts of body and routine histopathological evaluation was carried out as per standard protocols. RESULT: Clinically diagnosed 52 cases of palmoplantar psoriasis showed varied histopathology with hyperkeratosis (100%), parakeratosis (100%), regular acanthosis (75%), Supra-papillary thinning (44.2%), spongiosis (65.4%), tortuous vessels in the papillary dermis (78.8%) and mixed inflammatory infiltrates (predominantly lymphocytic-100%), which were observed to be prominent findings in skin biopsies of our patients. Clinicopathological correlation was achieved in 88.5% of cases. CONCLUSION: This study shows clinically diagnosed palmoplantar psoriasis with histopathological features consistent with palmoplantar psoriasis in 88.5% cases. Thus, clinically inconclusive hyperkeratotic lesions with palmoplantar psoriasis can be diagnosed with histopathological correlation improving the therapeutic intervention.

BACKGROUND: Routine histopathologic examination of orthopaedic surgical specimens is a standard practice at many institutions. Previous studies have demonstrated that this practice seldom altered patient management for several orthopaedic procedures. As a result, the value of such practices has come into question. The purpose of this study is to determine the cost-effectiveness of routine histopathologic analysis of specimens obtained during total ankle arthroplasty (TAA). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of patients who underwent uncomplicated primary TAA at a large, academic, health system between January 2015 and December 2021. The postoperative histopathologic diagnoses were compared with the respective patient's preoperative clinical and intraoperative diagnoses. The prevalence of concordant, discrepant, and discordant diagnoses was determined. Cost-effectiveness analysis was conducted to assess the financial implications of obtaining routine specimens for histopathologic examination for TAA. RESULTS: A total of 85 TAAs were identified in 85 individual patients and were included in the present study. A total of 172 specimens were sent for routine histopathologic review. On histopathologic analysis, a final diagnosis was confirmed in 82 (96.5%) of the total specimens reviewed. A discrepant diagnosis was discovered in 3 (3.5%; 2 cases of gout/pseudogout and 1 case of osteonecrosis) cases and 0 (0%) discordant diagnoses were discovered, corresponding to positive and negative predictive values of 97% and 100%, respectively The total estimate of costs incurred for the routine analysis of all specimens included in the study was between $12 299.20 and 17 846.00. The estimated cost to establish each discrepant diagnosis ranged between $4099.73 and $5948.67, and the cost for a discordant diagnosis was unable to be established. CONCLUSION: Routine histopathologic analysis of specimens obtained during TAA rarely revealed a discordant diagnosis and resulted in no alterations to patients' plan of care. Furthermore, the additional costs of routine histopathologic examination are significant. As such, it is recommended that such interventions in TAA should be performed on a per-case basis at the operating surgeon's discretion.

Objective This study explores the correlation between shear wave elastography (SWE) features and histopathological grades and subtypes in breast cancer, aiming to enhance diagnostic accuracy and personalized treatment strategies. Methods The study retrospectively analyzed 59 consecutive women with breast cancer who underwent breast ultrasound with SWE. SWE parameters and histopathologic information, including histological type and grade, were recorded. Qualitative and quantitative SWE findings were analyzed, and B-mode findings were evaluated. Sociodemographic and clinical factors and B-mode findings were assessed as predictors of elastography stiffness using logistic regression analysis. Results Of the 59 participants diagnosed with breast cancer, invasive ductal carcinoma of no special type (IDC-NST) was predominantly found in 50 (84.7%) cases, followed by invasive medullary carcinoma in 5 (8.5%) cases. The majority of participants belonged to the 50-59 age group, comprising 19 (32.2%) patients. Histopathological grading revealed grade II tumors in 27 (45.8%) cases and grade III tumors in 24 (40.7%) cases. Notably, grade III tumors exhibited higher tissue stiffness compared to grade II tumors. Out of 36 stiff lesions, 30 (83.3%%) were IDC-NST while 3 (8.3%) were invasive medullary carcinoma. A significant association was observed between higher histopathological grade (grade III) and increased tissue stiffness (p < 0.05). Furthermore, among participants with stiff lesions, 21 (58.3%) exhibited color defects while 4 (23.5%) cases with soft lesions also displayed color defects Conclusion The correlation between SWE findings and histopathological grades and subtypes underscores the potential of SWE as a valuable tool for predicting tumor aggressiveness and characterizing specific subtypes. SWE enhances diagnostic accuracy and complements traditional imaging modalities, holding promise for personalized treatment strategies.

Canine cutaneous histiocytoma (CCH) represents a significant proportion of dog skin tumours, often manifesting as the most common neoplastic skin condition in young animals. Predominantly affecting dogs under four, these tumours appear primarily as solitary lesions that may regress spontaneously. This study, conducted over five years at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, involved a detailed histopathological and ultrastructural examination of 93 CCH cases. Histologically, these tumours showed distinct patterns of lymphoid infiltration, which contributed to their classification into four groups based on the inflammatory response and histological architecture. Most tumours displayed signs of epidermal invasion and frequent mitotic figures, with necrosis present in over half of the cases. Ultrastructurally, the neoplastic cells were characterised by pleomorphism, abundant organelles, and adherens-type junctions. This study offers significant insights into the pathophysiology and morphological characteristics of CCH, underscoring the importance of detailed histological and ultrastructural analysis in accurately diagnosing and understanding this common canine tumour.

The successful treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is still a big challenge. Rivastigmine is one of the most used drugs for the treatment of AD. The short half-life, lower bioavailability, and less concentration of the drug in the brain after oral delivery are considered the main drawbacks of rivastigmine. To improve these drawbacks, nanostructure-mediated drug delivery has gained more attention. This study investigates the effect of rivastigmine-loaded in optimized chitosan nano-particles (RS-CSNPs) as polymeric nano-carriers by different administration routes (oral and intranasal) on aluminum chloride (AlCl3)-induced Alzheimer-like disease in rat. The model was established by giving rats 100 mg/kg/b.wt of AlCl3 orally for 3 months. Then the experimental rats were treated with RS-CSNPs either orally or intranasally for 75 days. Histopathology, immunohistochemistry of Tau expression in brain tissue, and gene expression of Caspase-3, NF-κB, and Nrf-2 were carried out. The therapeutic agents used decreased the alterations observed in AlCl3 group with improvement in the neuronal viability. In addition to low expression of tau protein, down-regulation of caspase-3 and NF-κB genes and up-regulation of Nrf-2. RS-CSNPs alleviated the progression of AD presumably via blocking the inflammatory cascade and decreasing the oxidative stress process. The intranasal route is superior to the oral one and promising in AD management.

In the field of biomedical research, rats are widely used as experimental animals due to their short gestation period and strong reproductive ability. Accurate monitoring of the estrous cycle is crucial for the success of experiments. Traditional methods are time-consuming and rely on the subjective judgment of professionals, which limits the efficiency and accuracy of experiments. This study proposes an EfficientNet model to automate the recognition of the estrous cycle of female rats using deep learning techniques. The model optimizes performance through systematic scaling of the network depth, width, and image resolution. A large dataset of physiological data from female rats was used for training and validation. The improved EfficientNet model effectively recognized different stages of the estrous cycle. The model demonstrated high-precision feature capture and significantly improved recognition accuracy compared to conventional methods. The proposed technique enhances experimental efficiency and reduces human error in recognizing the estrous cycle. This study highlights the potential of deep learning to optimize data processing and achieve high-precision recognition in biomedical research. Future work should focus on further validation with larger datasets and integration into experimental workflows.

Ichthyophthirius multifiliis is a parasite that poses a considerable threat to aquaculture and the ornamental fish industry, but with limited effective treatment options available. This study employed RT-qPCR to detect and analyze the expression changes of partial toll-like receptor (TLR) genes (TLR1 and TLR21), adapter protein and signal transduction molecule genes (MyD88, TRIF, NF-κB, IRAK4, and IRF3), and cytokines (IL-6, IL-8, IL-13, CXC-α and CXCR1), as well as complement C3, in the skin, gill, fin, liver, head kidney and spleen of Rhinogobio ventralis under different infection conditions. Additionally, tissue sections and scanning electron microscopy were utilized to observe the pathological changes in the gills and fins of R. ventralis after infection with I. multifiliis. The expression patterns of TLR-related DEGs (differentially expressed genes) in diseased wild fish were analyzed, revealing upregulation of TLR1, TLR21, MyD88, NF-κB, IRAK4, TRIF, IRF3, IL-6, IL-8, IL-13, CXC-α, CXCR1, and C3 genes in various tissues, indicating that these genes may be involved in the immune response of R. ventralis to I. multifiliis infection. To further analyze the gene expression of sampled from the field, an artificial infection model of R. ventralis was established under laboratory conditions, with additional sampling from the skin and fins. These genes continued to show varying degrees of upregulation, but the results were not entirely consistent with those from Wudongde samples, which may be due to the more complex environment in the wild or differences in the degree of I. multifiliis infection in wild fish. The infection of I. multifiliis caused severe damage to the gills and fins of R. ventralis, characterized by extensive secretions on the gill and fin surfaces, with the presence of attached I. multifiliis trophonts, including damage and loss of gill filaments, swollen gill lamellae, and deformed gill plates, as well as cell proliferation and necrosis of gill epithelial cells. This study sheds light on the role of the TLR signaling pathway in resisting I. multifiliis infection and its associated histopathological changes in R. ventralis, providing valuable insights for the prevention and treatment of I. multifiliis infection in R. ventralis.

Worldwide, particularly in developing nations, helminth infections are the leading causes of livestock illness and mortality. Parascaris (P.) equorum, a parasitic worm from the Ascarididae family, significantly impacts the production, health, and working performance of equines. This study aimed to investigate the impact of intraperitoneal sensitization of P. equorum on the immune system, oxidative stress, and histology in Wistar rats. After acclimatization for 7 days, we divided the rats into five groups, each consisting of six rats. Group I, serving as the control, was administered distilled water, followed by groups II (day 7), III (day 14), IV (day 21), and V (day 33). The rats were euthanized every day mentioned (Days 7-33). On day 0, a dosage of 1ml/100 gm rat (containing 500 µg/ml protein content) emulsified crude antigen extract with an incomplete Freund's adjuvant (1:1 volume), followed by a second dose of the same antigen concentration on day 7. To assess the allergenicity of this nematode, we measured a whole blood profile, serum levels of IFN-γ, IL-5, IL-10, IL-13, and IL-33, total immunoglobulins IgE and IgG, and oxidative stress markers. Also, we examined histological changes in the liver, kidney, and spleen. The results showed that values of total leukocyte count, granulocytes, monocytes, and lymphocytes were significantly (P < 0.05) increased on day 14 post-infection relative to other days of investigation. It was found that the levels of total immunoglobulins (IgE and IgG) and cytokines (INF-γ, IL-5, IL-13, and IL-33) on days 14 and 21 were significantly higher than in the control group. At all periods of the experiment, the injected group exhibited significantly higher concentrations of MDA and NO compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Conversely, GSH and CAT levels (P < 0.05) dropped significantly on days 7, 14, and 21. Different rat tissues showed alterations. Ultimately, this study described the detrimental effects of P. equorum crude antigen administration on the immune system, oxidative states, and histological changes of Wistar rats at various intervals.

RESUMEN

Side effects and low efficacy of current anti-toxoplasmosis therapeutics against encysted bradyzoites necessitate research into alternative safe therapeutic options. The safety, immunostimulatory, and antimicrobial properties of alginate nanoparticle formulation (Alg-NP) highlight its potential as an oral therapy against acute toxoplasmosis. In the current study, Alg-NP was formulated and characterized and then assessed for its anti-Toxoplasma effects using parasitological, ultrastructural, immunological, and histopathological studies. Treatment with Alg-NP significantly prolonged mice survival and reduced the parasite burden in both peritoneal fluid and tissue impression smears. In addition, it altered parasite viability and caused severe tachyzoite deformities as evidenced by ultrastructural studies. Alg-NP induced high levels of serum IFN-γ in infected mice with significant amelioration in histopathological changes in both hepatic and splenic tissue sections. In conclusion, Alg-NP could be considered a promising therapeutic agent against acute murine toxoplasmosis, and owing to its safety, it could potentially be enlisted for human use.

Introduction: Corneal ulcers are common lesions in both human and veterinary medicine. However, only a few studies have evaluated the efficacy of cross-linked hyaluronic acid (X-HA) eye drops on corneal wound healing. To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate and compare the efficacy of amniotic membrane extract eye drops (AMEED) and X-HA for corneal wound healing in rats. Material and methods: A total of 15 male Wistar rats (30 eyes) were used in this study. Then, 10 eyes were treated with X-HA, AMEED, or 0.9% saline. After general and topical anesthesia, a superficial corneal ulcer was created using a corneal trephine. The defect was further polished with a diamond burr. Three groups of 10 eyes each were treated with either one drop of 0.75% X-HA or AMEED or 0.9% saline (control), administered every 12 h for a duration of 72 h. The median epithelial defect area (MEDA), expressed as a percentage of the total corneal surface, was measured at 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72 h. Re-epithelization time scores were also evaluated. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare median times for re-epithelization and histopathologic scores between groups, while the Friedman test (for paired data) was employed to compare results from the serial analysis of MEDA and vascularization scores between groups. Results: MEDA was not significantly different between X-HA and AMEED. However, MEDA was significantly smaller in the X-HA group compared to the control group at 36 h (2.73 interquartile range (IQR) 5.52% x 9.95 IQR 9.10%, P=0.024) and 48 h (0.00 IQR 0.26% x 6.30 IQR 8.54%, P=0.030). The overall time for re-epithelization was significantly lower in the X-HA group (3.00 IQR 3.00) compared to the AMEED (6.5 IQR 3.00) and control (7.00 IQR 1.00) groups (P=0.035). Vascularization, hydropic degeneration, and epithelial-stromal separation were significantly less observed in samples in the X-HA-treated compared to samples in the AMEED- and saline-treated groups. Significantly more corneal epithelium cells were labeled for caspase3 in samples from the AMEED- and saline-treated groups compared to those from the X-HA-treated group. Discussion: Topical X-HA has been shown to accelerate corneal epithelial healing. AMEED did not decrease corneal re-epithelialization time. X-HA may also potentially be used as an adjunct therapy for treating corneal ulcers in clinical situations.

Microfilarial parasites can obstruct the lymphatic tree giving rise to varying lymphatic and extra-lymphatic symptoms. Renal manifestations can range from asymptomatic proteinuria, chyluria, and nephrotic syndrome, to acute glomerulonephritis. The diagnosis of filariasis is usually made by the demonstration of the parasite in the peripheral blood smear, with or without eosinophilia. The renal involvement by this parasite has been sparsely reported in the literature. We hereby report five cases of filariasis detected on histopathological examination of renal biopsies, performed for other indications, along with a brief report of the additional histological findings. Three native and two graft biopsies were included. All our patients were male, with a mean age of 47 years (range 37 to 66 years). The serum creatinine ranged from 1.2 to 12.9 mg/dL. The mean 24-hour urinary protein was 3.6 gm/day. Peripheral blood eosinophilia was not recorded in any case, however, ESR was raised in all cases. Urine examination revealed varying proteinuria, with hematuria in two cases. Histological examination revealed microfilaria in all five biopsies, along with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis in two cases, combined cellular and humoral rejection, minimal change disease and acute tubular necrosis in one case each respectively. All patients were treated with diethylcarbamazine 6mg/kg/day or 12 days, in addition to the renal medications. Diagnosing the parasite is crucial as the patient is likely to benefit due to the timely treatment of the disease. Reporting this case series highlights an interesting finding in nephropathology.

Purpose: We address the need for effective stain domain adaptation methods in histopathology to enhance the performance of downstream computational tasks, particularly classification. Existing methods exhibit varying strengths and weaknesses, prompting the exploration of a different approach. The focus is on improving stain color consistency, expanding the stain domain scope, and minimizing the domain gap between image batches. Approach: We introduce a new domain adaptation method, Stain simultaneous augmentation and normalization (SAN), designed to adjust the distribution of stain colors to align with a target distribution. Stain SAN combines the merits of established methods, such as stain normalization, stain augmentation, and stain mix-up, while mitigating their inherent limitations. Stain SAN adapts stain domains by resampling stain color matrices from a well-structured target distribution. Results: Experimental evaluations of cross-dataset clinical estrogen receptor status classification demonstrate the efficacy of Stain SAN and its superior performance compared with existing stain adaptation methods. In one case, the area under the curve (AUC) increased by 11.4%. Overall, our results clearly show the improvements made over the history of the development of these methods culminating with substantial enhancement provided by Stain SAN. Furthermore, we show that Stain SAN achieves results comparable with the state-of-the-art generative adversarial network-based approach without requiring separate training for stain adaptation or access to the target domain during training. Stain SAN's performance is on par with HistAuGAN, proving its effectiveness and computational efficiency. Conclusions: Stain SAN emerges as a promising solution, addressing the potential shortcomings of contemporary stain adaptation methods. Its effectiveness is underscored by notable improvements in the context of clinical estrogen receptor status classification, where it achieves the best AUC performance. The findings endorse Stain SAN as a robust approach for stain domain adaptation in histopathology images, with implications for advancing computational tasks in the field.

Fatty muscle degeneration and muscle atrophy have not been successfully treated due to their irreversible pathology. This study evaluated the efficacy of rat adipose-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (ADP MSCs) in treating fatty muscle degeneration (FD). A total of 36 rats were divided into three groups: the control (C) group (n = 12); FD model group, generated by sciatic nerve crushing (n = 12); and the group receiving ADP MSC treatment for FD (FD+MSCs) (n = 12). In Group FD+MSCs, ADP MSCs were injected locally into the gastrocnemius muscle one week after the FD model was created (Day 8). On Day 22 (n = 18) and Day 43 (n = 18), muscle morphology, histopathology, and molecular analyses (inflammation, muscle atrophy, adipocytes, and muscle differentiation markers) were performed. In Group FD+MSCs, the formation of immature myofibers was observed on Day 22, and mitigation of fatty degeneration and muscle atrophy progression was evident on Day 43. Gene expression of muscle atrophy markers (FBXO32, TRIM63, and FOXO1) and adipogenic markers (ADIPOQ, PPARG, FABP4, and PDGFRA) was lower in Group FD+MSCs than Group FD on Day 43. ADP MSCs induce anti-inflammatory effects, inhibit fat accumulation, and promote muscle regeneration, highlighting their potential as promising therapy for FD and atrophy.
