RESUMEN

Abstract Introduction: A recent revision of the generic classification of the Trochilidae based on DNA sequences revealed many inconsistencies with the current generic classification, largely based on plumage characters subject to homoplasy, especially in the Trochilini, the largest tribe. A thorough generic reorganization brought the classification into accord with the phylogeny, but due to lack of genetic data, two species remained unclassified. One of these was the Mangrove Hummingbird, "Amazilia" boucardi, endemic to Costa Rica and included in the IUCN red list of threatened species. Objective: To obtain molecular evidence to clarify the generic relationships of "A." boucardi. Methods: We isolated DNA from tissues of this species and amplified 4 nuclear and 4 mitochondrial fragments and compared these with homologous fragments from 56 species in the Trochilini, constructing phylogenetic trees with maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods. Results: Our phylogenetic analyses confirmed the placement of boucardi in the Trochilini and definitely excluded it from Amazilia but placed it with high confidence in the genus Chrysuronia Bonaparte, 1850, within which its closest relative is C. coeruleogularis, which also inhabits mangroves. Conclusions: Our genetic data based on nuclear and mitochondrial regions clearly indicate the relationship of A. boucardi and L. coeruleogularis. Moreover, it is also supported by their habitat distribution in the mangroves of the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and Western Panama. Therefore, we suggested to exclude A. boucardi as "incertae sedis".

Antibiotics' widespread and abusive use in aquaculture and livestock leads to extensive environmental dissemination and dispersion, consequently increasing antibiotic-resistant bacteria in marine ecosystems. Hence, there is an increased need for efficient methods for identifying and quantifying antibiotic residues in soils and sediments. From a review of the last 20 years, we propose and compare different chromatographic techniques for detecting and quantifying antibiotics in sediment samples from marine ecosystems, particularly in mangrove forest sediments. The methods typically include three stages: extraction of antibiotics from the solid matrix, cleaning, and concentration of samples before quantification. We address the leading causes of the occurrence of antibiotics in marine ecosystem sediments and analyze the most appropriate methods for each analytical stage. Ultimately, selecting a method for identifying antibiotic residues depends on multiple factors, ranging from the nature and physicochemical properties of the analytes to the availability of the necessary equipment and the available resources.

RESUMEN

Despite their ability to mitigate climate change by efficiently absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and acting as natural long-term carbon sinks, mangrove ecosystems have faced several anthropogenic threats over the past century, resulting in a decline in the global mangrove cover. By using standardized methods and the most recent Bayesian tracer mixing models MixSIAR, this study aimed to quantify source contributions, burial rates, and stocks of organic carbon (Corg) and explore their temporal changes (∼100 years) in seven lead-210 dated sediment cores collected from three contrasting Mexican mangrove areas. The spatial variation in Corg burial rates and stocks in these blue carbon ecosystems primarily depended on the influence of local rivers, which controlled Corg sources and fluxes within the mangrove areas. The Corg burial rates in the cores ranged from 66 ± 16 to 400 ± 40 g m-2 yr-1. The Corg stocks ranged from 84.9 ± 0.7 to 255 ± 2 Mg ha-1 at 50 cm depth and from 137 ± 2 to 241 ± 4 Mg ha-1 at 1 m depth. The highest Corg burial rates and stocks were observed in cores from the carbonate platform of Yucatan and in cores with reduced river influence and high mangrove detritus inputs, in contrast to patterns identified from global databases. Over the past century, the rising trends in Corg burial rates and stocks in the study sites were primarily driven by enhanced inputs of fluvial-derived Corg and, in some cores, mangrove-derived Corg. Despite their decreasing extension, mangrove areas remained highly effective producers and sinks of Corg. Ongoing efforts to enhance the global database should continue, including mangrove area characteristics and reliable timescales to facilitate cross-comparison among studies.

RESUMEN

Driven by the United Nations Decade on Restoration and international funding initiatives, such as the Mangrove Breakthrough, investment in mangrove restoration is expected to increase. Yet, mangrove restoration efforts frequently fail, usually because of ad hoc site-selection processes that do not consider mangrove ecology and the socioeconomic context. Using decision analysis, we developed an approach that accounts for socioeconomic and ecological data to identify sites with the highest likelihood of mangrove restoration success. We applied our approach in the Biosphere Reserve Marismas Nacionales Nayarit, Mexico, an area that recently received funding for implementing mangrove restoration actions. We identified 468 potential restoration sites, assessed their restorability potential based on socioeconomic and ecological metrics, and ranked sites for implementation with spatial optimization. The metrics we used included favorable conditions for propagules to establish and survive under sea-level rise, provision of ecosystem services, and community dynamics. Sites that were selected based on socioeconomic or ecological metrics alone had lower likelihood of mangrove restoration success than sites that were selected based on integrated socioeconomic and ecological metrics. For example, selecting sites based on only socioeconomic metrics captured 16% of the maximum attainable value of functioning mangroves able to provide propagules to potential restoration sites, whereas selecting sites based on ecological and socioeconomic metrics captured 46% of functioning mangroves. Our approach was developed as part of a collaboration between nongovernmental organizations, local government, and academics under rapid delivery time lines given preexisting mangrove restoration implementation commitments. The systematic decision process we used integrated socioeconomic and ecological considerations even under short delivery deadlines, and our approach can be adapted to help mangrove restoration site-selection decisions elsewhere.

Coastal wetlands are known for their diverse ecosystems, yet their soil characteristics are often misunderstood and thought to be monotonous. These soils are frequently subjected to saline water saturation, leading to unique soil processes. However, the combination and intensity of these processes can vary considerably across different ecosystems. In this study, we hypothesize that these diverse soil processes not only govern the geochemical conditions in coastal ecosystems but also influence their ability to deliver ecosystem services. To test this hypothesis, we conducted soil analyses in mangroves, seagrass meadows, and hypersaline tidal flats along the Brazilian coast. We used key soil properties as indicators of soil processes and developed a conceptual model linking soil processes and soil-related ecosystem services in these environments. Under more anoxic conditions, the intense soil organic matter accumulation and sulfidization processes in mangroves evidence their significance in terms of climate regulation through organic carbon sequestration and contaminants immobilization. Similarly, pronounced sulfidization in seagrasses underscores their ability to immobilize contaminants. In contrast, hypersaline tidal flats soils exhibit increased intensities of salinization and calcification processes, leading to a high capacity for accumulating inorganic carbon as secondary carbonates (CaCO3), underscoring their role in climate regulation through inorganic carbon sequestration. Our findings show that contrary to previously thought coastal wetlands are far from monotonous, exhibiting significant variations in the types and intensities of soil processes, which in turn influence their capacity to deliver ecosystem services. This understanding is pivotal for guiding effective management strategies to enhance ecosystem services in coastal wetlands.

RESUMEN

Mangrove leaves have unique features that enable them to cope with shifting environmental conditions while preserving their general functionality and efficiency. We examined the morphological characteristics and chlorophyll content (spectroscopically) of 600 mature Avicennia germinans leaves selected from 30 trees located in one degraded, one restored, and one natural mangrove ecosystem along Guyana's coastline. Systematic sampling was carried out using the closest individual sampling method in the wet and dry seasons. We hypothesized that both habitat type and seasonality influence the leaf traits and chlorophyll content of A. germinans. Our findings showed that A. germinans leaves are mesophyllous, and traits such as leaf perimeter, area, length, width, dry mass, wet mass, turgid mass, leaf-specific area, and relative water content showed fluctuations in ecosystems (one-way ANOVA, p < .05) as well as seasonally (paired t-test, p < .05). Substantial, positive correlations (p < .05, R > .75) were also established for over 10 leaf parameters in both seasons while PCA and multiple regression analyses further confirmed the strong relationships between leaf morphological features and their respective locations. Changes in chlorophyll concentration were most noticeable in the degraded ecosystem while variations in leaf traits were more pronounced in the restored mangrove area. This may be due to the various disturbances found in each ecosystem coupled with fluctuations in the seasons. Our results demonstrate that mangroves, to some extent, alter their plant structures to cope with environmental stressors present in the various ecosystems they thrive in to maintain their survival.

RESUMEN

Most paleoecological investigations use different biotic or abiotic proxies for climate and environmental reconstructions. Although fossil pollen is one of the most used biological proxies, Non-Pollen Palynomorphs (NPPs), especially fungal spores and tissues, have an underestimated potential to infer local and regional climate dynamics. This dataset describes the most common Non-pollen palynomorphs of fungal origin from mangrove sediments in the Caribbean Sea, southeastern Mexico. A detailed descriptive Atlas is presented, with light micrographs taken from routine pollen slides in paleoecological reconstructions. Microphotographs were included to facilitate their identification. A total of 59 spores, 4 tissues, 2 hyphae, and 11 unidentified fungal palynomorphs are described.

RESUMEN

Brazil is the fourth largest producer of plastic waste in the world, but studies on pollution of rivers and estuaries by microplastics are still scarce. This study is located in the state of Bahia (Northeast region) in ten estuarine environments around Todos dos Santos Bay (TDB), the largest Brazilian bay, where more than 3 million Brazilians live. The aim of the study was the evaluation of the input of microplastics into the TSB by river. Microplastic abundance, size, morphology and water quality were determined during three sampling campaigns. All river samples were highly polluted with microplastics (mostly <150 µm), up to 33,000 items m-3, exceeding values observed in most estuaries worldwide. The poor quality of the river water reflect the deficient treatment of domestic wastewater in the state of Bahia (49% are not treated), and in this study is shown a correlation with the abundance of microplastics, indicating their possible main source. Artisanal fishing can also contribute locally to this pollution. Morover, the results highlight the importance of sampling small microplastics (<100 µm) to avoid important underestimation of this pollution. Based on these data, the three major rivers would discharge 3.88 trillion items into the Bay each year, equivalent to 4.75 × 105 m2 of plastic. Further research in surface water systems is essential, given that the average wastewater treatment rates in the country and in the Northeast and North regions are only 43%, 32%, and 12%, respectively.

RESUMEN

Buenaventura Bay is considered the main estuary on the Pacific coast of Colombia, because of port and industrial activities. Mining and agriculture are major sources of contamination in the estuary. This study used the bivalve Anadara tuberculosa to evaluate the presence of mercury and lead in the Dagua River estuary (Colombia), one of the main tributaries coming into the bay. Five samplings for sediments and six for tissues of A. tuberculosa were carried out between 2016 and 2017. Additionally, a series of bioassays were conducted to determine its ability to bioaccumulate metals. A mean mercury concentration of 0.57 ± 0.74 mg*kg-1 and lead concentration of 0.87 ± 0.68 mg*kg-1 in sediment were found. Bioassays allowed us to conclude that at low mercury exposure concentrations (0.25 mg*kg-1), lesions are generated in animal tissue, mainly in sexual cells. The high concentrations of mercury found in organisms exceed the maximum permitted concentration established in Colombia. In addition, the contamination factors for mercury and lead were considered very high. This research aims at contributing to the use of Anadara tuberculosa, as prospective bioindicator for pollution biomonitoring in mangrove coastal ecosystems.

RESUMEN

Estuaries receive daily inputs of chemical elements which can impact the quality of water and sediment, as well as the health of biota. In addition to the sediment, bivalve mollusks have been used in the chemical monitoring of these systems. This study investigated the presence and contents of As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in superficial sediment and in bivalves (Crassostrea gasar, C. rhizophorae and Mytella guyanensis) from estuaries in the south / extreme south of Bahia State, northeast Brazil. The samples were evaluated with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES, Varian 710). Except for Cd, all other elements were found in the samples, being that Co was exclusive in the sediment. The estuaries equivalent to sampling stations #1 - Valença, #2 - Taperoá, #3 - Ilhéus and #4 - Belmonte showed levels of metals compatibles with those established by the Brazilian legislation, however, the #5 - Santa Cruz Cabrália, in addition to the presence of As, presented a high level of Pb and Cu in C. gasar, which was attributed to the impacts of nautical activities in that locality.(AU)

Introduction: The bivalve Anadara tuberculosa is an important fishery in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. The sex ratio varies along its geographic range and there are cases of hermaphroditism, occasional in some populations, normal in others. These characteristics may be a response to anthropogenic and environmental pressure. Objective: To evaluate sex ratio and hermaphroditism of the species in the Panamanian Pacific. Methods: Data on reproductive features of A. tuberculosa generated between 1994 and 2020 for Gulf of Montijo, as well as 2017 data from mangroves of David was analyzed. Macroscopic diagnosis of individual sex is sensitive to the problem of indeterminate individuals, which in turn can skew the sex ratio analysis; therefore, the macroscopic method was compared with histological sections to generate a correction factor to adjust the macroscopically determined sex ratio. Results: For Montijo, histology indicated that the female to male sex ratio ranged from 1:1 to 3.2:1 between 1994 and 2017, while macroscopy indicated 1.9:1 to 5.1:1 between 2004 and 2020. For David, histology indicated a ratio of 3.7:1, and macroscopy 7.9:1. At both localities, larger specimens had more sex ratio variation, independently of the technique, and there was non-casual protandric hermaphroditism in 2017. Conclusion: The occurrence of protandric hermaphroditism and sex ratio changes suggest anthropogenic and environmental pressure in all populations.

RESUMEN

Mangrove ecosystems are threatened worldwide by a wide range of factors including climate change, coastal development, and pollution. The effects of these factors on soil bacterial communities of Neotropical mangroves and their temporal dynamics is largely undocumented. Here we compared the diversity and taxonomic composition of bacterial communities in the soil of two mangrove forest sites of the Panama Bay: Juan Diaz (JD), an urban mangrove forest in Panama City surrounded by urban development, with occurrence of five mangrove species, and polluted with solid waste and sewage; and Bayano (B), a rural mangrove forest without urban development, without solid waste pollution, and with the presence of two mangrove species. Massive amplicon sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene and community analyses were implemented. In total, 20,691 bacterial amplicon sequence variants were identified, and the bacterial community was more diverse in the rural mangrove forest based on Faith's phylogenetic diversity index. The three dominant phyla of bacteria found and shared between the two sites were Proteobacteria, Desulfobacterota, and Chloroflexi. The ammonia oxidizing archaea class Nitrosphaeria was found among the top 10 most abundant. Dominant genera of bacteria that occurred in the two mangrove sites were: BD2-11_terrestrial_group (Gemmatimonadota), EPR3968-O8a-Bc78 (Gammaproteobacteria), Salinimicrobium (Bacteroidetes), Sulfurovum (Campylobacteria), and Woeseia (Gammaproteobacteria) of which the first three and Methyloceanibacter had increased in relative abundance in the transition from rainy to dry to rainy season in the urban mangrove forest. Altogether, our study suggests that factors such as urban development, vegetation composition, pollution, and seasonal changes may cause shifts in bacterial diversity and relative abundance of specific taxa in mangrove soils. In particular, taxa with roles in biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus, and on rhizosphere taxa, could be important for mangrove plant resilience to environmental stress.

RESUMEN

Mangroves are often exposed to heavy metals that accumulate in the food chain, generate toxicity to mangrove plants and affect microbial diversity. This study determined the abundance of genes associated with resistance and tolerance to heavy metals in the rhizosphere microbiome of Avicennia germinans from a semi-arid mangrove of La Guajira-Colombia by metagenomics and genomics approach. Twenty-eight genes associated with tolerance and 49 genes related to resistance to heavy metals were detected. Genes associated with tolerance and resistance to Cu, especially cusA and copA, were the most abundant. The highest number of genes for tolerance and resistance were for Zn and Co, respectively. The isolate Vibrio fluvialis showed the ability to tolerate Cu, Ni, Zn, and Cd. This work used a complementary approach of metagenomics and genomics to characterize the potential of mangrove microorganisms to tolerate and resist heavy metals and the influence of salinity on their abundance.

RESUMEN

The Eastern Pacific hawksbill sea turtle population is one of the most endangered of all sea turtle species. Here, we examine the foraging ecology of 47 hawksbill turtles (40.5-90.3 cm CCL, mean = 54.1 ± 10.1 cm) around Isla San José, Gulf of California, Mexico by integrating information from passive acoustic telemetry, behavior recordings, fecal analysis, and habitat surveys. Tagged hawkbill turtles exhibited high site fidelity over months and years (tracking duration 1-1490 days, mean = 255 ± 373 days) to the location and benthic habitat where individuals were initially caught. Diet was dominated by benthic invertebrates and algae including sponges, algae, tunicates, and mangrove roots. The mean percent cover of these benthic food items was significantly greater in the mangrove estuary than in adjacent rocky and sandy reef habitats. The Isla San José foraging ground is a high-use area for hawksbills and should be granted national protection status.

RESUMEN

This article presents a synthesis of information about the massive oil spill in Brazil (2019/2020). The event affected 11 states; however, the majority of the oil residue was collected (~ 5380 tons) near nine states (99.8%) in northeastern Brazil. This spill was not the largest in volume (between 5000 m3 and 12,000 m3) recorded in tropical oceans, but it was the most extensive (2890 km). This spill develops an overwashed tar that remains mostly in the undersurface drift (non-floating oil plume) below 17 m of depth while on the continental shelf. Ten ecosystems were impacted, with potentially more severe effects in mangroves and seagrasses. Certain negative effects are still understudied, such as effects on tropical reefs and rhodolith beds. A total of 57 protected areas in seven management categories were affected, most of which (60%) were characterized as multiple-use regions. The spill affected at least 34 threatened species, with impacts detected on plankton and benthic communities. Acute impacts were reported on echinoderms, coral symbionts, polychaetes, and sponges with evidence of oil ingestion. Socioeconomic impacts were detected in food security, public health, lodging, gender equality, tourism, and fishing, with reduced sales, prices, tourist attractiveness, gross domestic product, and employment. Moreover, chemical contamination was detected in some states by toxic metals (Hg, As, Cd, Pb, and Zn) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (acenaphthalene, fluoranthene, fluorene, naphthalene, and phenanthrene). This summary aims to aid in the design of science-based strategies to understand the impacts and develop strategies for the most extensive spill observed in tropical oceans.

RESUMEN

Understanding the association pattern and foraging behaviour of flower visitors is crucial to determine their role in the interaction with plants. To analyse the insect flower visitor association as well as their foraging profile on Aegialitis rotundifolia Roxb.-a near threatened mangrove plant, present study has been conducted among four islands of Indian Sundarban for three consecutive years. Results using first three Hill numbers depicted that, the species richness and Shannon and Simpson diversity of flower visitors were higher among the islands situated far from the sea than the islands neighbouring to the sea. NMDS analysis showed moderately ordinate data structure for island-year-based flower visitor association. Furthermore, network analysis for island-based visitor assemblage showed a significantly generalised network with no specialisation among islands. Five abundant visitors were further analysed for foraging profile, where the highest foraging rate was shown by Apis dorsata Fabricius, 1793 and the highest handling time was shown by Micraspis discolor (Fabricius, 1798). Moreover, all the visitors except M. discolor showed a significant variation in their foraging rate among different time frames. Furthermore, only M. discolor showed significant variation in their foraging behaviour when compared individually with each visitor in all the time frames. Present findings conclude that, flower visitors showed a generalised assemblage pattern among islands. Both honey bees provided excellent foraging on this plant and butterflies were good foragers too. Therefore, to device conservation strategies for this plant, protection of flower visitors must be of paramount concern.

RESUMEN

The primary objective of this study was to investigate the seasonal fish and crustacean variations concerning taxonomic composition, species richness, and diversity in sandy beach habitat. For this purpose, we investigated the Sonmiani Hor lagoon area during four distinct seasons, i.e., northeast (NE) monsoon, pre-monsoon, south-west (SW) monsoon, and post-monsoon for one year. During each haul, the net was pulled about 100m along the beach in 0.5m depth. The results showed a strong linear correlation between the diversity index and equitability in fishes (r = 0.978). The diversity index was strong negatively correlated with the abundance and biomass (r = -0.978, -0.972, respectively). The physical attributes like sea surface water temperature and salinity showed a strong negative effect on species assemblages (r = -0.981 and -0.943, respectively). The mean air and water temperature illustrated approximately 3°C difference during NE and pre-monsoon seasons. However, salinity, pH, and electrical conductivity did not show any significant seasonal variabilities. Under the ecological indices, the fish species displayed higher diversity (H = 3.19) during SW monsoon, whereas the lowest diversity was observed during pre-monsoon (H = 1.58). The equitability and species richness, however, remained more noticeable during SW monsoon (J = 0.81). The total number of individuals of fish and crustaceans reached 4799 with 3813 fish individuals and 986 individuals of crustaceans. A total of 27 families of fish while five crustacean families comprising of 30 genera and 38 fish species while ten genera and 17 species of crustaceans were recorded. Liza subviridis displayed the highest abundance among the sampled fish species. In conclusion, fish species constituted a significant part of the coastal fauna in the study area. The seasonal variations displayed distinct variations in fish species composition and diversity.(AU)
