Northeastern Thailand comprises one-third of the country and is home to various populations, with Lao Isan constituting the majority, while others are considered minority groups. Previous studies on forensic short tandem repeats (STRs) in Thailand predominantly focused on autosomal STRs but there was a paucity of X-STRs, exclusively reported from the North and Central regions of the country. In this study, we have newly established a 12 X-STRs from a total of 896 samples from Northeastern Thailand, encompassing Lao Isan as the major group in the region, alongside nine minor populations (Khmer, Mon, Nyahkur, Bru, Kuy, Phutai, Kalueang, Nyaw, and Saek). Across all ten populations, the combined powers of discrimination in both genders were high and the combined mean exclusion chance (MEC) indices calculated for deficiency, normal trio and duo cases were also high (> 0.99999). DXS10148 emerged as the most informative marker, while DXS7423 was identified as the least informative. Genetic comparison based on X-STRs frequency supported genetic distinction of cerain minor groups such as Kuy, Saek and Nyahkur from other northeastern Thai groups as well as genetic differences according to the geographic region of Thai groups (Northeast, North and Central). In sum, the overall results on population genetics are in agreement with earlier reports on other genetic systems, indicating the informativeness of X-STRs for use in anthropological genetics studies. From a forensic perspective, despite the limitations of small sample sizes for minority groups, the present results contribute to filling the gap in the reference X-STRs database of the major group Lao Isan, providing valuable frequency data for forensic applications in Thailand and neighboring countries.

Objective: Since the COVID-19 crisis in Thailand, the need for salons to have impeccable hygiene and client-hairdresser monitoring heightened. Due to scarce research on the COVID-19 preventive measures taken by hairdressing salons in semi-urban locations in Thailand during the pandemic, this study aimed to evaluate the standard of hair salons in preventing COVID-19 disease transmission in a semi-urban district in the northeastern region of Thailand. Methods: Using the purposive sampling method, data were collected from 22 Hair Salons. Data collection tools were a self-completed questionnaire designed into different sections to obtain information on demographics, work conditions and environmental health standard compliance according to guidelines set by the Thai Ministry of Public Health during the COVID-19 pandemic. Descriptive analyses were done, such as mean, standard deviation, and frequency. Results: The mean age of our respondents was 41.82 (±8.18) years, more than half were females (63.6 %). Most of the criteria assessing beauty salon standards according to Department of Health guidelines were passed, with all of the salons passing the lighting evaluation and mostly passing the heat and electric shock protection system evaluation, but the implementation of guidelines for preventive measures during the COVID-19 epidemic, according to Department of Health guidelines, suggested non-compliance by most hair Salons. Conclusion: Beauty salons should implement and strictly adhere to guidelines according to Department of Health standards. Training or education sessions regarding the prevention of infectious disease transmission should be conducted, as hairdressers should be motivated to comply with health and environmental health standards for both salon staff and clients' confidence. Further research should also be done on the behaviours associated with health risks in beauty salons at the national or border-nation level.

Bacterial content in mosquito larvae and adults is altered by dynamic interactions during life and varies substantially in variety and composition depending on mosquito biology and ecology. This study aimed to identify the microbiota in Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus and in water from their breeding sites in northeastern Thailand, a dengue-endemic area. Bacterial diversity in field-collected aquatic larvae and subsequently emerged adults of both species from several locations were examined. The microbiota was characterized based on analysis of DNA sequences from the V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene and exhibited changes during development, from the mosquito larval stage to the adult stage. Aedes aegypti contained a significantly higher number of bacterial genera than did Ae. albopictus, except for the genus Wolbachia, which was present at significantly higher frequencies in male Ae. albopictus (p < 0.05). Our findings also indicate likely transstadial transmission from larva to adult and give better understanding of the microbial diversity in these mosquitoes, informing future control programs against mosquito-borne diseases.

Under the pressure of the existing world population growth trends, the dercreasing pastoral fields and the increasing duration and incidences of drought and heat stress, the potash fertilizers demand dramaticly increase to enhance the world food production. Asia currently consumes 40% of the world's potash market, yet 70% of world potash exports come from mines in Canada and Europe. Weak collective efforts to produce potassium fertilizers economically pose the risk of global shortages of potash goods and threatening global food security. While the Khorat Plateau in Northeastern Thailand is noted to contain active and promising regional potash deposits, developing a proper potash industry in the region has largely been unsuccessful due to major constraints such as the challenge of establishing a brine disposal solution. This study demonstrates the performance of deep well injection (DWI) as an environmentally friendly alternative to secure waste brine production from the potash mine. The groundwater numerical model demonstrates the movement and penetration of the concentrate during and after deep well injection. The boundary condition was utilized from the regional hydrogeology data. The waste brine injection is based on the waste products of the mine factory. Our simulation shows that the DWI can isolate waste brine with freshwater by injecting it into the deep formation based on the geologic structure and properties analysis. With high porosity and low specific yield, the Khok Kruat formation within Khrat Basin shows a high potential injection rate of 200,000 m3/day, which is 200 times higher than current water brine production rates. Moreover, the salinity can easily dissolve into the target domain with specific formation properties. Hence, the DWI not only boosts the potash industry's image in the long term but also enable sustainable potash mining development in the region. Finally, we recommend that government agencies with regulatory oversight over the DWI must promote further research associated with site characterization, well construction and injection technologies, and monitoring tools in the long term.

INTRODUCTION: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most common X-linked enzymopathy, highly prevalent in the areas where malaria is or has been endemic. Prevalence of G6PD deficiency and characterization of G6PD variants in females from previously malaria-endemic areas of northeastern Thailand remain unstudied. METHODS: Prevalence of G6PD deficiency was determined by a fluorescent spot test (FST), quantitative G6PD activity assay, and multiplex allele-specific (AS)- and restriction fragment length polymorphic (RFLP)-PCR developed for detection of common G6PD variants in the Thai population. RESULTS: Prevalence of G6PD deficiency in female samples (n = 355) was 18% by FST, 29.6% by quantitation of G6PD activity, and 28.1% by PCR-based genotyping. The most common variant was G6PD Viangchan (54%), followed by G6PD Canton (11%) and G6PD Union (11%); in addition, a novel heterozygous variant, G6PD Khon Kaen (c.305T>C, p.F102S), was identified. The majority of heterozygotes expressed G6PD activity within the intermediate deficiency range (30-70% median of normal enzyme activity). CONCLUSION: High prevalence of G6PD deficiency was present in females from northeastern Thailand, the majority being due to heterozygosity of G6PD variants. The findings will have a bearing on the inclusion of primaquine in antimalarial-based policies for malaria elimination in populations with a high prevalence of G6PD deficiency.

Introduction: Healthy longevity is important in older adults. The lifestyle and cultural background are likely related to longevity. This study explored lifestyles and Buddhist Thai culture relating to longevity, and evaluated activities of daily living (ADL), body mass index (BMI), and mental health. Method: A mixed method using concurrent embedded strategy was employed. Qualitative data collection included observation and in-depth interviews with 30 older adults aged 80 years and above from Northeastern Thailand. Quantitative data: Barthel ADL, BMI, and Thai Geriatric Mental Health Assessment (T-GMH-A) were assessed. Content analysis was applied using the Strauss and Corbin method. Results: Four major themes were, promoting physical activities, prevention and control of diseases, mental health management, and Buddhist socio-Thai culture. Means of Barthel ADL, BMI, and T-GMH-A were 19.0 (SD 1.1), 21.34 (SD 3.07), and 53.53 (SD 7.22), respectively. Discussion: These factors greatly influenced longevity and well-being. Culturally congruent care should be implemented to health care services.

Traditional healers in Thailand are a primary source of health care for the Thai people. Highly experienced traditional healers are generally older people and they continue to pass away without recording or passing on their knowledge. Consequently, the cumulative knowledge held by traditional healers regarding the use of medicinal plants is being eroded and could be lost. In this study, we aimed to identify and document the medicinal plants and associated ethnobotanical knowledge held by traditional healers in Roi Et in northeastern Thailand. Data and plant specimens were collected from four traditional healers of the Phu Tai people. They were selected by purposive sampling and questioned using a semi-structured interview. The interviews covered their training, the ailments treated, treatment techniques, method of preparation and in addition, several healing sessions were observed. During field walks, we searched for the medicinal plants with the healers to review and document the availability of medicinal plants at each locality and in different habitats around the villages. Use values (UV) were calculated to estimate the importance of each medicinal plant and informant agreement ratios (IAR) were calculated to understand how widely known the uses were. The four Phu Tai traditional healers knew 162 medicinal plant species in 141 genera and 63 families. The family with the most medicinal plants was Leguminosae with 15 species. The plant part that they used most commonly was the stem, which was used for 82 species (49%). The most common preparation method was decoction, which was done for 124 species (75%). The most important and widely used medicinal plants were Rothmannia wittii, which had the highest use value (UV = 1.7). Most medicinal plants were used for treating tonic (34 species (21%)). Jaundice had the highest informant agreement ratio (IAR = 0.5). The most common life form among the medicinal plants was trees (56 species (34%)). The medicinal plants were mostly collected in community forests (81 species (49%)). Considering the richness of the healer's pharmacopeia, and the fact that their profession is not being perpetuated, this study points to the urgent need to document the traditional knowledge from the old herbalists before it disappears with the last practitioners from rural communities in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death worldwide, and the detection of LDL-C contributes to reducing risks. However, the LDL-C is rarely evaluated according to the gold standard method because it is costly and time-consuming. This study aimed to determine the agreement of LDL-C among three equations, namely Friedewald's equation, Puavilai's equation, and Dansethakul's equation. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study. RESULTS: Using the data of lipid measurement from a specific group of people in the remote rural area, we found that the Thai equations have more superior agreement with direct measurement than the Friedewald equation (ICC = 0.870, 95% CI = 0.857-0.882) when the agreement of continuous data was used for total analysis. Although the categorical analysis that gave better agreement was from Friedewald equation (K index = 0.730, 95% CI = 0.720-0.751), the findings from this study confirmed the population-specific use of Pauvilai's equation and Dansethakul's equation for determining the LDL-C. CONCLUSION: Pauvilai's equation showed better agreement with direct measurement for LDL-C. Thus, it could be considered as an alternative for the direct method, particularly in laboratories in rural areas in Thailand.

PURPOSE: Laotians and Lao Isan are widely spread Lao groups who live in Laos and northeastern Thailand, respectively. We explored the genetic structure between them and other ethnic groups from Thailand to clarify historical patterns of admixture between Tai-Kadai and Austroasiatic speakers, and to expand the forensic reference database for the region. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We combined new genetic data for 554 individuals from 12 populations, typed for 15 autosomal short tandem repeats, with available data from 14 populations from Thailand, for a total of 1,153 raw genotypes belonging to 26 populations. We calculated forensic parameters and performed various analyses on genetic diversity, genetic structure, genetic admixture, and genetic relationships among the studied populations. RESULTS: Forensic estimators suggest a good power of discrimination with the combined power of exclusion ranging from 0.993628 to 0.999991 and a combined power of discrimination value greater than 0.99999999. Generally, the two Laotian groups were genetically similar, but the central Laotians from Vientiane have a closer genetic relationship to the Lao Isan than the northern Laotians from Luang Prabang. The Lao genetic ancestry forms the majority of the Lao Isan genetic makeup, while Austroasiatic ancestry is present at ∼10%-50%. CONCLUSIONS: Lao Isan populations show signs of Lao ancestry and admixture with local Austroasiatic ancestry, which reflect historical migrations from Laos to Thailand. Lao speakers are genetically more homogeneous than Austroasiatic speakers, suggesting differential historical processes.

A total of 101 local rice varieties, composted of 85 glutinous and 16 non-glutinous varieties grown in wet season 2016, were analyzed for tocopherols (TOC), tocotrienols (T3) and γ-oryzanol (Orz). Two popular varieties, RD6 and KDML105, were used as standard checks for glutinous and non-glutinous varieties, respectively. γ-TOC was found in all glutinous varieties (0.47-9.78 mg/kg), which were higher than RD6 (0.16 mg/kg). α-TOC was found in 40 varieties (1.02-6.29 mg/kg), only 6 varities were higher than RD6 (3.95 mg/kg). δ-T3 was found in 81 varieties (0.57-7.00 mg/kg), mostly varities were higher than RD6 (0.67 mg/kg). γ-T3 was found in all glutinous varieties (8.00-22.1 mg/kg), while RD6 contained 13.3 mg/kg. For α-T3, it was found in 39 glutinous varieties (1.52-9.94 mg/kg), mostly varities were higher than RD6 (2.62 mg/kg). Orz was found in all glutinous rice varieties (276-638 mg/kg), while RD6 contained 423 mg/kg. γ-TOC was found in all non-glutinous varieties (0.67-5.21 mg/kg), which were higher than KDML105. α-TOC was found in only 5 varieties (1.92-2.83 mg/kg), while KDML105 contained 2.23 mg/kg. δ-T3 was found in all non-glutinous varieties (1.64-8.87 mg/kg), which were higher than KDML105 (0.71 mg/kg). γ-T3 was also found in all non-glutinous varieties (8.80-17.58 mg/kg), while KDML105 contained 15.8 mg/kg. α-T3 was found in 9 non-glutinous varieties (4.56-8.93 mg/kg),while KDML105 contained only 0.86 mg/kg. Orz was also found in all those non-glutinous varieties (272-469 mg/kg), while KDML105 contained 469 mg/kg. These results indicate that γ-T3 was the highest vitamin E isomer present in all rice samples, while γ-TOC, α-TOC, δ-T3 and α-T3 were present in trace amounts. Orz was found in all local rice varieties.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between genotype and haplotype of MDR1 (C1236T, G2677T/A and C3435T) and the risk for cervical cancer in Northeastern Thai women. Methods: An age-matched case-control study involving squamous cell cervical cancer (SCCA) patients (n=204) and healthy controls (n=204) was enrolled for MDR1 genotyping by real-time PCR method. Results: The genotype distribution of MDR1 in both patients and controls was not significantly different (p>0.05). The haplotype analysis showed that T-T-T was the most common haplotype in this population. Significantly increased risk of cervical cancer was observed in carriers of T-T-C and C-G-T haplotypes with ORs of 1.86 (95%CI=1.02-3.39, p=0.0416) and 2.00 (95%CI=1.18-3.40, p=0.0140), respectively. Analysis of 2677-3435 haplotype showed increased risk for cervical cancer in G-T (OR=1.55; 95% CI=1.12-2.13, p=0.0432) and T-C (OR=1.91; 95%CI=1.05-3.47, p=0.0325). Conclusion: The results provide evidence that haplotype of MDR1 may be an important risk factor for cervical cancer development in Northeastern Thai women.

The fluviatile terrace deposits of Khok Sung, Nakhon Ratchasima province, have yielded more than one thousand fossils, making this the richest Pleistocene vertebrate fauna of Thailand. The excellent preservation of the specimens allows precise characterization of the faunal composition. The mammalian fauna consists of fifteen species in thirteen genera, including a primate, a canid, a hyaenid, proboscideans, rhinoceroses, a suid, cervids, and bovids. Most species correspond to living taxa but globally (Stegodon cf. orientalis) and locally (Crocuta crocuta ultima, Rhinoceros unicornis, Sus barbatus, and Axis axis) extinct taxa were also present. The identification of Axis axis in Khok Sung, a chital currently restricted to the Indian Subcontinent, represents the first record of the species in Southeast Asia. Three reptilian taxa: Crocodylus cf. siamensis, Python sp., and Varanus sp., are also identified. Faunal correlations with other Southeast Asian sites suggest a late Middle to early Late Pleistocene age for the Khok Sung assemblage. However, the Khok Sung mammalian fauna is most similar to that of Thum Wiman Nakin, dated to older than 169 ka. The Khok Sung large mammal assemblage mostly comprises mainland Southeast Asian taxa that migrated to Java during the latest Middle Pleistocene, supporting the hypothesis that Thailand was a biogeographic pathway for the Sino-Malayan migration event from South China to Java.

The aim of this study was to describe factors associated with perceived health and healthy aging among older people in northeastern Thailand. Thailand's aging population is growing and facing an increasing old-age dependency ratio. Northeastern Thailand, known as Isan, is a region in which the number of older residents is projected to grow rapidly. Older people in this region are likely to confront great threats to their health and well-being. These issues require appropriate attention and actions to promote healthy aging. However, healthy aging in this region has not been studied. A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 453 older people, aged 60 years or older. Participants completed the Healthy Aging Instrument (HAI) and provided relevant demographic characteristics. Mann-Whitney U tests, Kruskal-Wallis tests and multiple regression models were used to analyze the data. Through comparative analyses, significant differences in HAI scores were observed for the following factors: marital status, residential area, disability, income level, and perceived meaningfulness in life. In the multiple regression models, residential area, disability, and marital status explained 24.30 % of the variance in HAI scores. Health promotion strategies and future targeted intervention programs should consider the importance of these factors.

In Thailand, there are currently five recognized species members of the bubble-nesting Betta genus, namely Betta splendens, B. smaragdina, B. imbellis, B. mahachaiensis and B. siamorientalis. In 2010, we indicated the possibility, based on COI barcoding evidence, that there might be two additional species, albeit cryptic, related to the type-locality B. smaragdina in some provinces in the northeast of Thailand. In the present study, after a more extensive survey of the northeast, and phylogenetic analyses based on COI and ITS1 sequences, the B. smaragdina group may be composed of at least 3 cryptic species members. The phylogenetic positions of these B. smaragdina group members in the bubble-nesting bettas' tree together with those of their congeners have been consolidated by better DNA sequence quality and phylogenetic analyses. With a better supported tree, the species statuses of B. siamorientalis and the Cambodian B. smaragdina-like fish, B. stiktos, are also confirmed.

The design of an Agent-Based Model (ABM) is described that integrates Social and Land Use Modules to examine population-environment interactions in a former agricultural frontier in Northeastern Thailand. The ABM is used to assess household income and wealth derived from agricultural production of lowland, rain-fed paddy rice and upland field crops in Nang Rong District as well as remittances returned to the household from family migrants who are engaged in off-farm employment in urban destinations. The ABM is supported by a longitudinal social survey of nearly 10,000 households, a deep satellite image time-series of land use change trajectories, multi-thematic social and ecological data organized within a GIS, and a suite of software modules that integrate data derived from an agricultural cropping system model (DSSAT - Decision Support for Agrotechnology Transfer) and a land suitability model (MAXENT - Maximum Entropy), in addition to multi-dimensional demographic survey data of individuals and households. The primary modules of the ABM are the Initialization Module, Migration Module, Assets Module, Land Suitability Module, Crop Yield Module, Fertilizer Module, and the Land Use Change Decision Module. The architecture of the ABM is described relative to module function and connectivity through uni-directional or bi-directional links. In general, the Social Modules simulate changes in human population and social networks, as well as changes in population migration and household assets, whereas the Land Use Modules simulate changes in land use types, land suitability, and crop yields. We emphasize the description of the Land Use Modules - the algorithms and interactions between the modules are described relative to the project goals of assessing household income and wealth relative to shifts in land use patterns, household demographics, population migration, social networks, and agricultural activities that collectively occur within a marginalized environment that is subjected to a suite of endogenous and exogenous dynamics.
