RESUMEN

Fraud in the food supply system will be exacerbated by shortages caused by climate change and COVID-19's impact. The dried herbs market exemplifies complex supply chains attractive to criminals seeking financial gain. Real-time remote testing is achievable through development of globally accessible chemometric models for portable near infrared devices, deployed throughout supply chains. This study describes building of models for detection of oregano adulteration, on portable near infrared devices, and comparison to a laboratory-based Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy method. 33/34 portable devices were able to correctly classify 5 out of 6 samples successfully with all adulterated samples being correctly classified following the use of appropriate transferability pre-processing routines. The devices native setup shows limited ability to perform a true screening of oregano using the setup offered. However modifications to the setup could in the future offer a solution that facilitates fit-for-purpose real time detection of adulterated samples within the supply chain.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The acid value is an important indicator for evaluating the quality of edible oil during storage. This study employs a portable near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy system to determine the acid value during edible oil storage. Four MPA-based variable selection methods, namely competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS), the variable iterative space shrinkage approach (VISSA), iteratively variable subset optimization (IVSO), and bootstrapping soft shrinkage (BOSS) were introduced to optimize the preprocessed NIR spectra. Support vector machine (SVM) models based on characteristic spectra obtained by different selection methods were then established to achieve quantitative detection of the acid value during edible oil storage. RESULTS: The results revealed that, compared with the full-spectrum SVM model, the SVM models established by the characteristic wavelengths optimized by the variable selection methods based on the MPA strategy exhibit a significant improvement in complexity and generalization performance. Furthermore, compared with the CARS, VISSA, and IVSO methods, the BOSS method obtained the least number of characteristic wavelength variables, and the SVM model established based on the optimized features of this method exhibited the optimal prediction performance. The root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) was 0.11 mg g-1, the coefficient of determination (Rp2) was 0.92 and the ratio performance deviation (RPD) was 2.82, respectively. CONCLUSION: The overall results indicate that the variable selection methods based on the MPA strategy can select more targeted characteristic variables. This has good application prospects in NIR spectra feature optimization. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMEN

The fatty acid value of rice is one of the important indexes to reflect its freshness. A portable near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) system was designed and assembled to dynamically monitor fatty acid values in rice storage in this study. First, the near-infrared (NIR) spectra of rice samples in different storage periods were obtained using the portable NIRS system. Then, a weighted multiplicative scatter correction with variable selection (WMSCVS) algorithm was applied to the original spectra for scattering correction, and to compress variable space for achieving characteristic wavelengths. Finally, a partial least square (PLS) regression model was established using the characteristic wavelengths to realize the rapid monitoring of fatty acid values in rice storage. The results showed that the performance of the optimal PLS model based on the features by the WMSCVS algorithm was significantly better than those of the optimal PLS models based on SNV and MSC pre-processing spectra, with the determination coefficient (RP2) of 0.9615 and the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 0.3626 in the predictive process. The overall results demonstrate that it is feasible to use the portable NIRS system developed by our team to quickly monitor the fatty acid values in rice storage.

RESUMEN

Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (CRP), has been used in China for hundreds of years as a functional food and medicine. However, some short-age CRPs are disguised as long-age CRPs by unscrupulous businessmen in order to obtain higher profits. In this paper, a rapid and nondestructive method for the classification of different-age CRPs was established using portable near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in diffuse reflectance mode combination with appropriate chemometric methods. The spectra of outer skin and inner capsule of CRPs at different storage ages were obtained directly without destroying the samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) with single and combined spectral pretreatment methods was used for the classification of different-age CRPs. Furthermore, the data were pretreated with the PCA method, and Fisher linear discriminant analysis (FLD) with optimized pretreatment methods was discussed for improving the accuracy of classification. Data pretreatment methods can be used to eliminate the noise and background interference. The classification accuracy of inner capsule is better than that of outer skin data. Furthermore, the best results with 100% prediction accuracy can be obtained with FLD method, even without pretreatment.

RESUMEN

Continuous brain imaging techniques can be beneficial for the monitoring of neurological pathologies (such as epilepsy or stroke) and neuroimaging protocols involving movement. Among existing ones, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG) have the advantage of being noninvasive, nonobstructive, inexpensive, yield portable solutions, and offer complementary monitoring of electrical and local hemodynamic activities. This article presents a novel system with 128 fNIRS channels and 32 EEG channels with the potential to cover a larger fraction of the adult superficial cortex than earlier works, is integrated with 32 EEG channels, is light and battery-powered to improve portability, and can transmit data wirelessly to an interface for real-time display of electrical and hemodynamic activities. A novel fNIRS-EEG stretchable cap, two analog channels for auxiliary data (e.g., electrocardiogram), eight digital triggers for event-related protocols and an internal accelerometer for movement artifacts removal contribute to improve data acquisition quality. The system can run continuously for 24 h. Following instrumentation validation and reliability on a solid phantom, performance was evaluated on (1) 12 healthy participants during either a visual (checkerboard) task at rest or while pedalling on a stationary bicycle or a cognitive (language) task and (2) 4 patients admitted either to the epilepsy (n = 3) or stroke (n = 1) units. Data analysis confirmed expected hemodynamic variations during validation recordings and useful clinical information during in-hospital testing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a wearable wireless multichannel fNIRS-EEG monitoring system in patients with neurological conditions.
