RESUMEN

Successful innovations are deemed to be necessary requisites for enterprise success. On the other hand, works council participation ("co-determination" in Germany) and employee participation are judged differently as either fostering employee and enterprise benefits or only the former or even none. Both forms of participation have found diverging theoretical and empirical argumentations regarding innovations. Here, we argue and show empirically that both forms of participation deliver positive contributions to innovation success, economically and employee-related, substantiated with qualitative reports from 36 process innovation cases and quantitative data from 44 cases. Qualitative case analyses reveal different profiles of works council participation depending on the innovation type. Independent of the innovation types, more successful innovations are marked by more intensive participation. Quantitative examinations of a causal model with path analysis specify how this is achieved: works council and employee participation further the growth of appropriate knowledge and the former also raises the coordination capability; both are essential preconditions for innovation success. A direct impact of works councils on innovation success complements the indirect effects. The slightly modified path analysis explains 53% of the innovation success variance.

The aviation industry needs to work on the resilience of air travel against health threats and regain passenger trust. This paper proposes a pandemic-free travel concept based on creating an infectious diseases free zone in the airport terminal building through screening of passengers, crews and airport workers. This research shows that infectious disease detection methods applicable at the airport could be available in a short timeframe, at affordable cost and in scale. The potential location of passenger health screening, facilitation requirements, health responsibilities delegation and appropriate usage of industry standards for regulations are key elements to a potential implementation that would be phased and long term.

Statewide behavioral health collaborative capacity-building initiatives are designed to support substance use agencies in strengthening their behavioral health services delivery and implementing evidence-supported practices. This study explored the types of innovations resulting from one such statewide behavioral health initiative, as well as the facilitators and barriers to implementing these innovations, from the perspective of the substance use agencies involved in the initiative. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with 67 agency stakeholders and 93 agency progress reports. Results indicated that 161 innovations emerged through this project for the substance use agencies, including staffing; policy, procedure, and technology; partnerships; training and media products; and service innovations. Agency facilitators included collaboration/partnership, project buy-in, and quality of agency staff. Barriers to implementation included lack of collaboration or partnerships, agency infrastructure or climate, lack of project buy-in, and funding and billing issues. The article concludes with a discussion on implications for social work practice in behavioral health.

Little is known about dissemination and implementation in safety net settings. The authors conducted a literature review of innovation/implementation studies in US safety net health care settings between 2008 and 2017. Each article was coded for (1) intervention characteristics, (2) implementation stage, (3) internal versus external ownership, and (4) prespecified implementation outcomes (eg, acceptability and fidelity). Twenty studies were identified; the majority were implemented within community clinics or integrated safety net systems (15 articles), most involved care process improvements (13 articles), and most were internally developed (13 articles). The internally developed innovations reported fewer barriers to acceptability among staff/providers, higher leadership involvement and organizational alignment, greater amounts of customization to the local setting, and better sustainment. Future work should harness the high levels of alignment and acceptability in implementation research within safety net settings, with an eye toward maintaining fidelity to facilitate dissemination across sites.
