RESUMEN

The response of marine and freshwater algal species to both point and non-point sources of nitrogen have not been directly compared. We compared the photosynthetic yield response (Fv/Fm) of nitrogen-starved freshwater and marine green microalgae after a 3-day exposure to fourteen treated wastewater and nine aquaculture farm effluent as well as twenty-three soil erosion sources. The combination of inorganic and organic nutrients, organic carbon, and carbon-tonitrogen ratios were most highly correlated with algal responses across all nitrogen sources (R2 = 0.69 for the freshwater species, and 0.63 for the marine species). The marine algal response also correlated with ammonium de-sorbed from sediment upon contact with marine waters. Our study highlights that organic carbon and salinity affect the bioavailability of nutrient sources for microalgae, although the mechanisms remain unclear. This provides new insights relevant to managing nitrogen pollution in both freshwater and coastal environments.

RESUMEN

The emergence of antibiotic resistance (AR) poses a significant threat to both public health and aquatic ecosystems. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been identified as potential hotspots for disseminating AR in the environment. However, only a limited number of studies have been conducted on AR dissemination through WWTPs in Sri Lanka. To address this knowledge gap in AR dissemination through WWTP operations in Sri Lanka, we critically examined the global situation of WWTPs as hotspots for transmitting antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) by evaluating more than a hundred peer-reviewed international publications and available national publications. Our findings discuss the current state of operating WWTPs in the country and highlight the research needed in controlling AR dissemination. The results revealed that the impact of different wastewater types, such as clinical, veterinary, domestic, and industrial, on the dissemination of AR has not been extensively studied in Sri Lanka; furthermore, the effectiveness of various wastewater treatment techniques in removing ARGs requires further investigation to improve the technologies. Furthermore, existing studies have not explored deeply enough the potential public health and ecological risks posed by AR dissemination through WWTPs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive diagnostic tool that is commonly used to visualize soft tissues and anatomical structures. Many patients who undergo MRI scans experience anxiety. This multicenter study was conducted to assess anxiety levels experienced by patients who underwent MRI scans in the Palestinian radiology departments and identify the risk factors associated with higher levels of anxiety experienced by the patients. METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in the radiology departments of different hospitals in the West Bank of Palestine using a questionnaire. The questionnaire collected different demographic data of the patients. A 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS) was used to assess the level of anxiety experienced by the patients who received MRI scans. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 28. RESULTS: A total of 383 patients participated in this study. Of the patients, 255 (66.6%) reported experiencing low, moderate, or high anxiety levels during the MRI scan. The median anxiety was 20.0 with an interquartile range (IQR) of 0.0-50.0 as measured using the 100-mm VAS. Higher anxiety levels were reported by the patients who were female (p-value < 0.001), unemployed (p-value = 0.009), and did not receive an MRI scan before (p-value = 0.001). In addition, the patients who received pelvis scans reported higher levels of anxiety compared to those who received scans for upper extremities (p-value = 0.031), abdomen (p-value = 0.033), pelvis (p-value = 0.043), and lower extremities (p-value = 0.016). In addition, the patients who received scans for the head/neck reported higher levels of anxiety compared to the patients who received scans for the lower extremities (p-value = 0.021). CONCLUSION: The findings of this study showed that a considerable proportion of the patients who received MRI scans in Palestinian hospitals experience anxiety. Radiologists and other decision-makers in the healthcare system should design effective measures to reduce anxiety and improve the experiences of patients who are female, unemployed, and those who are scheduled to receive MRI scans for the first time. Moreover, these interventions should particularly focus on the patients who are scheduled to receive scans for the pelvis and head/neck.

RESUMEN

A high-frequency, in situ fluorescence probe, called Fluocopée®, has been developed in order to better monitor variations in both the quality and quantity of dissolved organic matter within various aquatic environments (e.g. wastewater, receiving environments) thanks to a wide choice of 29 measured Excitation/Emission wavelength pairs. This advance pave the way to new measurement possibilities in comparison with existing probes, which are usually only able to measure 1-4 fluorophores. The qualification tests of the Fluocopée® probe indicate a high level of accuracy for the measurements of tyrosine, tryptophan and humic acids solutions. Good repeatability and reproducibility are also observed. For the first time, this tool has been deployed in an urban watershed (Bougival, Seine River, downstream of Paris) and in the settled effluent from a wastewater treatment plant (Seine aval, Achères, France). This new high-frequency in situ probe offers great application potential, including organic matter quality and quantity monitoring at drinking and wastewater treatment plants (treatment optimization) and in continental and marine waters (the fate of organic matter in biogeochemical cycles).

RESUMEN

Introduction: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe cardiovascular condition characterized by pulmonary vascular remodeling, increased resistance to blood flow, and eventual right heart failure. Right heart catheterization (RHC) is the gold standard diagnostic technique, but due to its invasiveness, it poses risks such as vessel and valve injury. In recent years, machine learning (ML) technologies have offered non-invasive alternatives combined with ML for improving the diagnosis of PAH. Objectives: The study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of various methods, such as electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography, blood biomarkers, microRNA, chest x-ray, clinical codes, computed tomography (CT) scan, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), combined with ML in diagnosing PAH. Methods: The outcomes of interest included sensitivity, specificity, area under the curve (AUC), positive likelihood ratio (PLR), negative likelihood ratio (NLR), and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR). This study employed the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 (QUADAS-2) tool for quality appraisal and STATA V.12.0 for the meta-analysis. Results: A comprehensive search across six databases resulted in 26 articles for examination. Twelve articles were categorized as low-risk, nine as moderate-risk, and five as high-risk. The overall diagnostic performance analysis demonstrated significant findings, with sensitivity at 81% (95% CI = 0.76-0.85, p < 0.001), specificity at 84% (95% CI = 0.77-0.88, p < 0.001), and an AUC of 89% (95% CI = 0.85-0.91). In the subgroup analysis, echocardiography displayed outstanding results, with a sensitivity value of 83% (95% CI = 0.72-0.91), specificity value of 93% (95% CI = 0.89-0.96), PLR value of 12.4 (95% CI = 6.8-22.9), and DOR value of 70 (95% CI = 23-231). ECG demonstrated excellent accuracy performance, with a sensitivity of 82% (95% CI = 0.80-0.84) and a specificity of 82% (95% CI = 0.78-0.84). Moreover, blood biomarkers exhibited the highest NLR value of 0.50 (95% CI = 0.42-0.59). Conclusion: The implementation of echocardiography and ECG with ML for diagnosing PAH presents a promising alternative to RHC. This approach shows potential, as it achieves excellent diagnostic parameters, offering hope for more accessible and less invasive diagnostic methods. RESUMEN

Flextensional transducers have been widely used as low-frequency projectors, and these characteristics can be used to develop hydrophones with wider receiver bandwidth and higher sensitivity than conventional products in low-frequency ranges. In this work, we designed flextensional hydrophones of all classes, and compared their acoustic receiver performance to select the most suitable class for a low-frequency broadband hydrophone. For this purpose, basic models of the hydrophones were constructed for all classes and the effects of various structural parameters on the acoustic receiver characteristics of the hydrophones were analyzed. Based on the results, the structure of the flextensional hydrophone of each class was designed to have the maximum receiver bandwidth by an optimization technique while maintaining the receiver voltage sensitivity over a certain level. A comparison of the designed performance led to the selection of the class IV flextensional hydrophone as the most promising one with the widest receiver fractional bandwidth and highest sensitivity.

RESUMEN

Organophosphate esters (OPEs), as alternatives to brominated flame retardants, are extensively used in both production and daily life, with their environmental contamination and toxic effects being a concern. This study investigated the concentration levels, bioaccumulation, and ecological effects of OPEs in five different effluent-receiving rivers. The results demonstrate that the concentration range of Σ13OPEs across the five rivers was between 142.23 and 304.56 ng/L (mean: 193.50 ng/L). The highest pollution levels of OPEs were found in rivers receiving airport and industrial wastewater, followed by agricultural wastewater, mixed wastewater, and domestic wastewater. Tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP), triethyl phosphate (TEP), and tricresyl phosphate (TCrP) were identified as the main pollutants. The accumulation concentrations of OPEs in fish ranged from 54.0 to 1080.88 ng/g dw, with the highest bioaccumulation found in Pelteobagrus fulvidraco, followed by Carassius auratus and Misgurnus anguillicaudatus. The brain was the primary organ of accumulation, followed by the liver, gills, intestine, and muscle. Tri-n-propyl phosphate (TPeP) and TEP exhibited the highest bioconcentration, with log BAF values exceeding three. The bioaccumulation of OPEs was influenced by pollutant concentration levels, hydrophobic properties, and biological metabolism. Ecological risk assessment revealed that the cumulative risk values of Σ13OPEs ranged from 0.025 to 16.76, with TCrP being the major contributor. It posed a medium-low risk to algae but a high risk to crustaceans and fish.

RESUMEN

This experiment evaluated health, physiological, and performance responses of high-risk cattle administered the maternal bovine appeasing substance (mBAS) during feedlot receiving. Angus-influenced, newly weaned male calves (n = 120) were purchased from an auction facility. Calves arrived at the research feedyard on day -1 and body weight (BW) was recorded upon arrival (199 ±â€…1 kg). Calves were ranked by arrival BW and received 1 of 2 treatments prior to initial processing (day 0): (1) 10 mL of an mBAS (Ferappease; FERA Diagnostics and Biologicals; College Station, TX) or (2) 10 mL of mineral oil (CON; placebo). Treatments were applied topically to the nuchal skin area (5 mL) and above the muzzle (5 mL). Calves were vaccinated against Clostridium and respiratory pathogens, dewormed, implanted, band-castrated, and received metaphylaxis at initial processing, and then distributed into 10 drylot pens according to arrival BW and treatment (n = 12 calves/pen, 5 pens/treatment). Calves were reapplied treatments (mBAS or CON) concurrently with booster vaccination on d 14. Feed intake and incidence of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) were recorded daily. Blood and hair samples from the tail-switch were collected on days 0, 14, 28, 42, and 60 for analysis of physiological variables. Calves were sampled for nasal microbiota analysis via swab on days 0, 14, and 28. Final shrunk BW was recorded on day 61 after 16 h of feed and water restriction. Calf BW gain and final BW did not differ between treatments (P ≥ 0.40). Incidence of BRD was similar (P = 0.99) between mBAS and CON (56.7% for both treatments; SEM = 6.45). A greater (P = 0.04) proportion of mBAS calves diagnosed with BRD required a single antibiotic treatment to regain health (70.6 vs. 47.0%; SEM = 8.32), and mortality was greater (P = 0.03) in CON calves diagnosed with BRD (17.6 vs. 2.94%; SEM = 5.133). Relative abundance of Mycoplasma in nasal microbiota was reduced (P = 0.04) in mBAS calves compared with CON (34.7 vs. 27.4%; SEM = 2.35). Cortisol concentration in hair from the tail-switch was less (P = 0.01) on day 28 for mBAS calves compared with CON. Administering mBAS improved (P = 0.04) total pen-based liveweight change during the experiment (498 vs. 309 kg/pen; SEM = 65.2) and final pen-based total liveweight (2,676 vs. 2,484 kg/pen; SEM = 65.4). Administration of mBAS to high-risk cattle decreased physiological stress markers, reduced mortality, and increased pen-based productivity during a 60-d receiving period.

Beef cattle are exposed to several stressors during the initial days in the feedlot, which impair their immunity and lead to bovine respiratory disease (BRD). Strategies to mitigate stress upon feedlot arrival are warranted, including administration of the maternal bovine appeasing substance (mBAS). The mBAS is a mixture of fatty acids that replicate the composition of the original bovine appeasing pheromone. Administering mBAS has been shown to alleviate the physiological consequences elicited by stressful management procedures in beef cattle. In this study, male beef calves were purchased from a commercial auction facility soon after weaning, transported to the research feedyard, and assigned initial processing within a 48-h period. Calves were castrated and received a metaphylactic antibiotic treatment during initial processing, which are relevant management practices in US feedyards. In general, mBAS administration at initial processing and 14 d later decreased physiological stress markers, improved immunity parameters, and reduced mortality by 83% during a 60-d feedlot receiving period. Calf growth and BRD incidence were not affected, but the reduced mortality from mBAS administration increased total liveweight production by the end of the experiment. Therefore, this study provides additional evidence of the benefits from administering mBAS to beef cattle upon feedlot arrival.

RESUMEN

The tailwater from wastewater treatment plants serves as an important water resource in arid regions, alleviating the conflict between supply and demand. However, the effects of different tailwater discharge proportions on microbial community dynamics remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of different tailwater discharge proportions on the water quality and microbial community characteristics of sediments in receiving water bodies under controlled conditions (WF-1, WF-2, WF-3, WF-4, and WF-5, containing 0% tailwater + 100% natural water, 25% tailwater + 75% natural water, 50% tailwater + 50% natural water, 75% tailwater + 25% natural water, and 100% tailwater + 0% natural water, respectively). Microbial co-occurrence networks and structural equation model were used to unveil the relationship between microbial communities and their shaping factors. Results showed that distinct microbial community compositions were found in the sediments with low- (< 50%) and high- (> 50%) proportions of tailwater. Specifically, WCHB1-41 and g_4-29-1, which are involved in organic degradation-related functions, were the key genera in the high-proportion cluster. A total of 21 taxa were more abundant in the low-proportion (< 50%) cluster than that in high-proportion (> 50%). Moreover, higher modularity was observed in the low-proportion. Total phosphorus directly affected while ammonia nitrogen indirectly affected the microbial community structure. Our findings support the distinct heterogeneity of microbial communities driven by tailwater discharge in receiving water bodies, and further confirmed that high-proportion tailwater depletes sensitive microbial communities, which may be avoided through scientific management.

RESUMEN

Human activities have dramatically affected global ecology over the past few decades. Geospatial technologies provide quick, efficient, and quantitative evaluation of spatiotemporal changes in eco-environmental quality (EEQ). This study focuses on a novel approach called remote sensing-based ecological indicators (RSEIs), which has used Landsat imagery data to assess environmental conditions and their changing trends. Four ecological indicators, mainly heatness, dryness, wetness, and greenness, have been used to assess the EEQ in Asansol Municipal Corporation Region (AMCR). Assembling all the indicators to generate RSEI, the principal component analysis (PCA) approach was applied. Our findings show that wetness and greenness favorably impact the province's EEQ, whereas dryness and heat create a negative impact. The RSEI assessment revealed that 24.53 to 28.83% of the area was poor and very poor, whereas the areas with very good decreased from 18.80 to 4.01% from 2001 to 2021 due to urban expansion and industrialization. The relative importance analysis indicates that greenness has a positive relation with RSEI, and dryness and heatness have a negative relation with RSEI. Finally, the receiving operating characteristic (ROC) was used for validation (AUC-0.885) of the RSEI. This study offers valuable insights for ecological management decision-making, guiding planners, and policymakers.

RESUMEN

To address the requirements of sonar imaging, such as high receiving sensitivity, a wide bandwidth, and a wide receiving angle, an AlN PMUT with an optimized ratio of 0.6 for the piezoelectric layer diameter to backside cavity diameter is proposed in this paper. A sample AlN PMUT is designed and fabricated with the SOI substrate-based bulk MEMS process. The characterization test result of the sample demonstrates a -6 dB bandwidth of approximately 500 kHz and a measured receiving sensitivity per unit area of 1.37 V/µPa/mm2, which significantly surpasses the performance of previously reported PMUTs. The -6 dB horizontal angles of the AlN PMUT at 300 kHz and 500 kHz are measured as 68.30° and 54.24°, respectively. To achieve an accurate prediction of its characteristics when being packaged and assembled in a receive array, numerical simulations with the consideration of film stress are conducted. The numerical result shows a maximum deviation of ±7% in the underwater receiving sensitivity across the frequency range of 200 kHz to 1000 kHz and a deviation of about 0.33% in the peak of underwater receiving sensitivity compared to the experimental data. By such good agreement, the simulation method reveals its capability of providing theoretical foundation for enhancing the uniformity of AlN PMUTs in future studies.

RESUMEN

A total of 17 groups of wastewaters from the chemical industrial parks and matched receiving river waters were collected in the east of China. The measured total concentrations of 21 analyzed PFAS analogues (∑21PFAS) in the influents and effluents of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were in the range of 0.172-20.6 µg/L (mean: 18.2 µg/L, median: 3.9 µg/L) and 0.167-93.6 µg/L (mean: 10.8 µg/L, median: 1.12 µg/L), respectively, which were significantly higher than those observed in the upstream (range: 0.0158-7.05 µg/L, mean: 1.09 µg/L, median: 0.482 µg/L) and downstream (range: 0.0237-1.82 µg/L, mean: 0.697 µg/L, median: 0.774 µg/L) receiving waters. Despite the concentrations and composition profiles of PFAS varied in the water samples from different sampling sites, PFOA was generally the major PFAS analogue in the research areas, mainly due to the history of PFOA production and usage as well as the specific exemptions. The calculated concentration ratios of the short-chain PFCAs and PFSAs to their respective predecessors (PFOA and PFOS) in most of the samples far exceeded 1, indicating a shift from legacy PFOA and PFOS to short-chain PFAS in the research areas. Correlation network analysis and the calculated concentration ratios of PFAS in the effluents versus influents indicated transformation may have occurred during the water treatment processes and PFAS could not be efficiently removed in the WWTPs. Wastewater discharge of chemical industrial parks is a vital source of PFAS dispersed into the aquatic environment.

RESUMEN

As widely acknowledged, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) stand as significant contributors to the presence of microplastics in surface water. Nonetheless, there exists a notable research gap regarding the extent of potential pollution resulting from the concurrent and uninterrupted discharges originating from multiple WWTPs into small-scale receiving water bodies. This study endeavors to address this knowledge deficit by conducting a thorough investigation into the prevalence of microplastics in surface water. The research encompasses seven distinct locations within the Changzhou section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and the effluent of three WWTPs situated along the tributary. The results indicate differences in the distribution of microplastics in surface waters of mainstream and tributaries. While the microplastic abundance and composition showed little variation along the main stream, the tributaries displayed an overall increasing trend in microplastic abundance from upstream to downstream. Notably, the major contributors to this increase were fragments, fiber particles, and microplastics with particle sizes ranging from 100 to 300 µm. Considering that the primary distinction between the tributaries and the mainstream is the presence of the three WWTPs along the tributaries, the study conducted a correlation analysis between river surface water and effluents from these plants. The results indicated a stronger correlation between the tributaries and the effluents, suggesting that WWTPs are one of the primary factors contributing to the elevated levels of microplastics in the tributaries. Finally, a comparative analysis of microplastic abundance in the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal's Changzhou section and other regions was conducted. The findings revealed that the microplastic pollution level in the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal's Changzhou section is higher than that in most other rivers. Therefore, the issue of microplastic pollution in the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal's Changzhou section warrants our attention, particularly with regard to the effectiveness of microplastic removal by the WWTPs along its course.

RESUMEN

Ninety Angus × Hereford steers (259.9 ±â€…36.18 kg body weight [BW]) were used in a 56-d experiment to assess the effects of flavoring additives on feed intake, and stress and immune response of newly received feedlot cattle. Steers were homogenously distributed by BW into six pens equipped with an individual feed intake monitoring system, and pen was randomly assigned to one of three treatments (15 heads per pen; 30 heads per treatment): a standard feedlot receiving diet (CT), or the same diet with a flavoring additive comprised of either sweeteners (Luctarom Feedlot, SW) or a mix of basic tastes (Luctarom Feedlot Mix, MX) at 1 kg/mT. Pens were equipped with a feed intake monitoring system, while BW, chute behavior, flight speed, blood and saliva samples were collected bi-weekly, and hair samples were collected at 4-wk intervals during the study. Data were analyzed using a mixed-effects model for a pen study using individual animal records with repeated measures. There was a treatment × week interaction (P < 0.01) where meal duration was greater in SW steers than MX and CT on week 3, and then CT on weeks 7 and 8. A trend for treatment × week interaction (P = 0.06) showed that the number of visits per day tended to be greater in SW than MX steers on weeks 4 and 5, and it tended to be greater in SW than MX and CT on week 5. The concentration of IL-6 was greater (P < 0.01) on days 1 and 28 than on day 14. The IgM concentration was greater (P < 0.01) on day 1 compared to days 14, 28, and 56. The concentration of haptoglobin was greater (P < 0.01) on 14 than days 28, 42, and 56, and it was greater (P < 0.01) on day 1 than days 42 and 56. The concentration of serum amyloid A was greater (P < 0.01) on day 1 compared to the rest of sampling days. Fibrinogen concentration was greater (P < 0.01) on day 1 compared to days 14 and 42. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was greater (P < 0.01) on days 42 and 56 compared to days 1 and 28, and greater (P < 0.01) on day 14 compared to day 28. Hair and saliva cortisol concentrations were lower (P < 0.01) on day 56 compared to days 1 and 28, respectively. The use of flavoring additives, particularly when based on sweeteners (SW), caused some changes in the feeding pattern of newly received steers. These changes, however, were not consistent over the 56-d feeding period and were not accompanied by a change in growth performance, temperament, biomarkers of stress, inflammation, or immune function.

Feedlot-receiving calves are typically exposed to a series of stressful events, such as weaning, transportation, commingling, a change of environment, and illness, that have a negative impact on feed intake. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of feed flavors on feed intake, indicators of stress, and markers of the immune response for newly received feedlot cattle. Under the conditions of this study, the addition of flavoring agents showed some effects on the feeding pattern of newly arrived feedlot cattle, compatible with a positive hedonic response to the treatments. These effects, however, were limited to specific periods of time during the experiment and were not present when considering their performance over the whole 56-d feeding period. Furthermore, the addition of flavoring agents did not have a consistent effect on the concentration of inflammatory mediators, biomarkers of stress, or immune function. Future research should explore whether these or other flavoring agents, at different doses or used at different times, could cause biologically relevant effects to improve the resilience of calves during the feedlot receiving period.

RESUMEN

Serving as a vital linkage between surface water and groundwater, the hyporheic zone (HZ) plays a fundamental role in improving water quality and maintaining ecological security. In arid or semi-arid areas, effluent discharge from wastewater treatment facilities could occupy a predominant proportion of the total base flow of receiving rivers. Nonetheless the relationship between microbial activity, abundance and environmental factors in the HZ of effluent-receiving rivers appear to be rarely addressed. In this study, a spatiotemporal field study was performed in two representative effluent-dominated receiving rivers in Xi'an, China. Land use data, physical and chemical water quality parameters of surface and subsurface water were used as predictive variables, while the microbial respiratory electron transport system activity (ETSA), the Chao1 and Shannon index of total microbial community, as well as the Chao1 and Shannon index of denitrifying bacteria community were used as response variables, while ETSA was used as response variables indicating ecological processes and Shannon and Chao1 were utilized as parameters indicating microbial diversity. Two machine learning models were utilized to provide evidence-based information on how environmental factors interact and drive microbial activity and abundance in the HZ at variable depths. The models with Chao1 and Shannon as response variables exhibited excellent predictive performances (R2: 0.754-0.81 and 0.783-0.839). Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) was the most important factor affecting the microbial functions, and an obvious threshold value of ∼2 mg/L was observed. Credible predictions of models with Chao1 and Shannon index of denitrifying bacteria community as response variables were detected (R2: 0.484-0.624 and 0.567-0.638), with soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) being the key influencing factor. Fe (Ⅱ) was favorable in predicting denitrifying bacteria community. The ESTA model highlighted the importance of total nitrogen in the ecological health monitoring in HZ. These findings provide novel insights in predicting microbial activity and abundance in highly-impacted areas such as the HZ of effluent-dominated receiving rivers.

RESUMEN

To investigate effects of inorganic or complexed trace mineral source (zinc, copper, manganese, and cobalt) on receiving period performance and morbidity, crossbred beef heifer calves (n = 287) arriving on three delivery dates were used in a 42-d receiving trial. Heifers were processed after arrival, stratified by day -1 body weights (BW) and allocated randomly to eight pens (11 to 13 heifers/pen, 24 pens total). Within truckload, pens were assigned randomly to dietary treatment (n = 12 pens/treatment). Heifers were housed on 0.42-ha grass paddocks, provided ad libitum bermudagrass hay and provided dietary treatments in grain supplements fed daily. Treatments consisted of supplemental zinc (360 mg/d), copper (125 mg/d), manganese (200 mg/d), and cobalt (12 mg/d) from complexed (Zinpro Availa 4, Zinpro Corp. Eden Prairie, MN) or inorganic sources (sulfates). Heifers were observed daily for clinical bovine respiratory disease (BRD). If presenting BRD symptoms and rectal temperature ≥ 40 °C, heifers were deemed morbid and treated with antibiotics. Six heifers/pen were bled to determine serum haptoglobin concentrations on days 0, 14, and 28. Liver biopsies were taken on day 5 ±â€…2 and 43 ±â€…1 from three calves selected randomly from each pen for mineral status comparisons. Statistical analyses were performed using the MIXED, GLIMMIX, and repeated measures procedures of SAS 9.4 with truckload as a random effect and pen within truckload specified as subject. There tended to be a treatment by day interaction for BW (P = 0.07). Heifer BW did not differ on day 0 (P = 0.82) and day 14 (P = 0.36), but heifers fed complexed trace minerals had greater BW on day 28 (P = 0.04) and day 42 (P = 0.05). Overall average daily gains were greater for heifers fed complexed trace minerals (P = 0.05; 0.78 vs. 0.70 kg, SE = 0.03). Heifers supplemented with inorganic trace minerals had greater BRD incidence (P = 0.03; 58 vs. 46%, SE = 3.6). Haptoglobin concentrations decreased throughout the trial (P < 0.001), and heifers fed complexed trace minerals tended to have a decrease in haptoglobin concentrations (P = 0.07). The source of trace mineral supplementation had no effect (P ≥ 0.20) on liver mineral concentrations and there were no treatment × day interactions (P ≥ 0.35). In conclusion, supplementing diets for the first 42 d after arrival with complexed trace mineral sources improved heifer performance as compared to heifers supplemented with inorganic trace minerals.

Issues associated with health and management of newly received cattle continue to pose significant animal welfare and economic challenges for the beef industry. Diagnosis of bovine respiratory disease, accompanied with poor growth performance, can be addressed by nutritional intervention in receiving cattle. Trace mineral inclusion in receiving rations is vital to calf performance. There are numerous sources of trace mineral supplements that exist commercially for cattle and their effects on immune function, growth, and performance measures were evaluated. Organic trace mineral supplements are being used in replacement of inorganic salts due to potentially greater bioavailability and functionality. An organic source that is commonly used are amino acid complexes. Replacing inorganic sources with complexed sources of trace minerals (zinc, copper, manganese, and cobalt) improved growth performance and decreased sickness during the 42-d receiving study.

RESUMEN

A 2.45 GHz high-efficiency rectifying circuit for a wireless radiofrequency (RF) energy collection system is proposed. The RF energy collection system is composed of a transmitting antenna, a receiving antenna, a rectifying circuit and a load. The designed receiving antenna is a kind of dual-polarised cross-dipole antenna; its bandwidth is 2.3-2.5 GHz and gain is 7.97 dBi. The proposed rectifying circuit adopts the technology of an output matching network, which can suppress the high-harmonic components. When the input power at 2.45 GHz is 13 dBm and the load is 2 kΩ, the highest conversion efficiency of RF-DC is 74.8%, and the corresponding maximum DC output voltage is 4.92 V. The experiment results are in good agreement with the simulation results, which shows a good application prospect.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: About one million people in need of home care in Germany are assisted by 15,400 home care services. Home healthcare is mostly a complex endeavour because interprofessional collaboration is often challenging. This might negatively impact patient safety. The project interprof HOME aims to develop an interprofessional person-centred care concept for people receiving home care in a multistep approach. In one of the work packages we explored how people receiving home care, relatives, nurses, general practitioners, and therapists (physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists) perceive collaboration in this setting. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 people receiving home care and with 21 relatives. Additionally, we worked with nine monoprofessional focus groups involving nurses of home care services (n = 17), general practitioners (n = 14), and therapists (n = 21). The data were analysed by content analysis. RESULTS: Three main categories evolved: "perception of interprofessional collaboration", "means of communication", and "barriers and facilitators". People receiving home care and relatives often perceive little to no interprofessional collaboration and take over a significant part of the organisational coordination and information exchange. Interprofessional collaboration in steady care situations does exist at times and mostly occurs in coordination tasks. Contact and information exchange are rare, however, interprofessional personal encounters are sporadic, and fixed agreements and permanent contact persons are not standard. These trends increase with the complexity of the healthcare situation. Joint collaborations are often perceived as highly beneficial. Means of communications such as telephone, fax, or e-mail are used differently and are often considered tedious and time-consuming. No interprofessional formal written or electronic documentation system exists. Personal acquaintance and mutual trust are perceived as being beneficial, while a lack of mutual availability, limited time, and inadequate compensation hinder interprofessional collaboration. CONCLUSIONS: Interprofessional collaboration in home care occurs irregularly, and coordination often remains with people receiving home care or relatives. While this individual care set-up may work sufficiently well in low complex care situations, it becomes vulnerable to disruptions with increasing complexity. Close interactions, joint collaboration, and fixed means of communication might improve healthcare at home. The findings were integrated into the development of the person-centred interprofessional care concept interprof HOME. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study is registered on the International Clinical Trails registry platform ClinicalTrials.gov as NCT05149937 on 03/11/2021.

RESUMEN

To understand the contamination characteristics and ecological risk of antibiotics in contaminated fields of pharmaceutical plants, samples of the surface soil, soil column, wastewater treatment process water, ground water, and residue dregs were collected from two typical antibiotic pharmaceutical plants in South and North China. A total of 87 commonly used antibiotics were quantified using ultrasound extraction-solid phase extraction and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that a total of 31 antibiotics of five classes were detected in all types of samples, and the maximum concentrations at each sampling point in the surface soil, soil column, residue dregs, wastewater treatment process water, and groundwater were 420 ng·g-1, 595 ng·g-1, 139 ng·g-1, 1 151 ng·L-1, and 6.65 ng·L-1, respectively. Most of the antibiotics were found in the surface soil, showing a decreasing trend with the depth of the soil column. The ecological risk assessment indicated that sulfamethazine, sulfaquinoxaline, tetracycline, chlorotetracycline, and D-sorbitol were at higher risk. Improving the efficiency of antibiotic removal from pharmaceutical wastewater and preventing production shop leaks are effective measures of controlling antibiotic contamination into and around fields in pharmaceutical plants.

RESUMEN

A biomarker is a measured indicator of a variety of processes, and is often used as a clinical tool for the diagnosis of diseases. While the developmental process of biomarkers from lab to clinic is complex, initial exploratory stages often focus on characterizing the potential of biomarkers through utilizing various statistical methods that can be used to assess their discriminatory performance, establish an appropriate cut-off that transforms continuous data to apt binary responses of confirming or excluding a diagnosis, or establish a robust association when tested against confounders. This review aims to provide a gentle introduction to the most common tools found in diagnostic biomarker studies used to assess the performance of biomarkers with an emphasis on logistic regression.
