Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine how intensifying training loads over a week affects the sleep patterns of young soccer players on the nights immediately following the intensified training sessions. Methods: Quasi-experimental study. Fifteen young athletes participants of a team engaged in national level competition, underwent two weeks of training with varying load magnitudes-Week 1: low accumulated training load and Week 2: intensified training loads [40% increase in external training load(ETL)]. To characterize the intensification of the workload, the methods PlayerLoad and RPE-Session were employed to measure ETL and internal training load(ITL), respectively. Total sleep time(TST), total time in bed(TTB), sleep efficiency(SE), sleep latency(SL), and wake after sleep onset(WASO) were obtained using actigraphy and daily sleep log. The variables were compared among the days of week (e.g. Monday of week 1 with Monday of week 2, and so forth). Results: Acute training intensification in week 2 led to significant increases in ETL and ITL on Monday and on Wednesday(p < .05), and ETL(p < .05) on Friday on the second week. Improvements in sleep were observed (Tuesday-TST:+80 min, WASO:-29.3 min, SL:-8 min, SE:+9%; Thursday-TST:+86 min, SL:-4 min, SE:+4%; Saturday-TST:+40 min, SL:+1 min) compared to the same day of the previous week. Correlations between ETL and ITL(r = 0.637), ITL and TST(r = 0.572), ITL and SE(r = 0.548) were found. Conclusion: Intensification of training loads results in alterations in sleep variables, notably an elevated TST and SE in the days subsequent to the acute load increment.

OBJECTIVE: The French AmbUlatory extra-peritoneal Cesarean Section (FAUCS) is aimed at improving patients' birth experience and recovery. However, data are scarce regarding its maternal and neonatal safety. This study seeks to compare maternal and neonatal outcomes between FAUCS and conventional cesarean deliveries at term. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study involving women who underwent scheduled cesarean deliveries at term. We compared a total of 810 cases utilizing the FAUCS technique with 217 cases utilizing conventional cesarean deliveries. Surgical complications, adverse neonatal events, and maternal recovery parameters were compared. RESULTS: The incidence of overall surgical complications was comparable between the two groups, with rates of 1.97% for FAUCS and 1.85% for the conventional cesarean deliveries. Specific complications such as bladder injury (0.1%), bowel injury (0.1%), blood transfusion (1.35%), and post-partum hemorrhage (1%) were consistent with existing literature. Neonatal outcomes, including neonatal acidemia and admission rates to the neonatal intensive care unit, were comparable between the groups and demonstrated favourable comparisons to previously reported data. Notably, women in the FAUCS group required less analgesia, with only 0.8% receiving morphine, compared to 38% in the control group. Furthermore, the FAUCS group demonstrated significantly quicker recovery, with 86% achieving autonomy and early discharge at their discretion within 48 hours post-operation, in contrast to only 17% in the control group. CONCLUSION: When performed by experienced practitioners, FAUCS proves to be a safe procedure, with no increased risk for maternal or neonatal complications. Its significant benefits in terms of enhancing maternal recovery are noteworthy.

Biogas produced from anaerobic digestion usually contains impurities, particularly with a high content of CO2 (15-60%), thus decreasing its caloric value and limiting its application as an energy source. H2-driven biogas upgrading using homoacetogens is a promising approach for upgrading biogas to biomethane and converting CO2 to acetate simultaneously. Herein, we developed a novel membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) with H2 and biogas separately supplied via bubbleless hollow fiber membranes. The gas-permeable hollow fibers of the MBfR enabled high H2 and CO2 utilization efficiencies (∼98% and ∼97%, respectively) and achieved concurrent biomethane (∼94%) and acetate (∼450 mg/L/d) production. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing suggested that enriched microbial communities were dominated by Acetobacterium (38-48% relative abundance). In addition, reverse transcription quantitative PCR of the functional marker gene formyltetrahydrofolate synthetase showed that its expression level increased with increasing H2 and CO2 utilization efficiencies. These results indicate that Acetobacterium plays a key role in CO2 to acetate conversion. These findings are expected to facilitate energy-positive wastewater treatment and contribute to the development of a new solution to biogas upgrading.

Rapid urbanization increases psychological stress among pedestrians, potentially heightening mental health disorders. This study examines the role of street walls' visual and textural characteristics in stress recovery, using Qingdao as a case study. Virtual reality is employed to simulate five distinct street walls: yellow mortar, brown stone, red brick, green plant, and white mortar. The stress recovery effectiveness of these walls was evaluated through psychological and physiological indicators from 48 young college students. Results indicated that street walls with warm tones, particularly brown stone, significantly aid stress recovery. Psychologically, Restorative Components Scale was highest for brown stone at 1.13. Physiologically, it was linked with notable reductions in diastolic and pulse pressure (decreases of 2.95 mmHg and 2.27 mmHg, respectively), and enhanced parasympathetic activity, as evidenced by the fastest decrease in low frequency/high frequency ratio (LF/HF), and increases in pNN50 and RR (0.14-2.01% and 1.57-11.81 ms, respectively). For urban design, the incorporation of warm-toned materials and natural elements like stone is recommended for their superior restorative benefits.

CONTEXT: Carbon monoxide, also known as the "silent killer," is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and non-irritable gas that, when inhaled, enters the bloodstream and lungs, binds with the hemoglobin, and blocks oxygen from reaching tissues and cells. In this work, the monolayer MoSe2-based CO gas sensors were designed using density functional theory calculation with several dopants including Al, Au, Pd, Ni, Cu, and P. Here, Cu and P were found to be the best dopants, with adsorption energies of -0.67 eV (Cu) and -0.54 eV (P) and recovery times of 1.66 s and 13.8 ms respectively. Cu conductivity for CO adsorption was found to be 2.74 times that of CO2 adsorption in the 1.0-2.26 eV range. P displayed the highest selectivity, followed by Pd and Ni. The dopants, Pd and Ni, were found suitable for building CO gas scavengers due to their high recovery times of 9.76 × 1020 s and 2.47 × 1011 s. Similarly, the adsorption of CO2 on doped monolayer MoSe2 was also investigated. In this study, it is found that monolayer MoSe2 could be employed to create high-performance CO sensors in a CO2-rich environment. METHOD: The electrical characteristics of all doped MoSe2 monolayers are obtained using a DFT calculation with the PBE-GGA method from the Quantum ESPRESSO package. The self-consistent field (SCF) computations were performed using a 7 × 7 × 1 k-point grid and a norm-conserving pseudo potential (NCPP) file. To determine electrical conductivity, the semi-classical version of Boltzmann transport theory, implemented in the Boltz Trap code, was used.

RESUMEN

Recovery is real and has had a transformative impact on mental health policies and services, including shifting the focus from chronicity and symptom management to the realization that individuals with mental health issues can lead meaningful lives. However, recovery has been defined, described, understood, and measured in a wide variety of ways that may account for misuses and abuses in its application and possible stagnation in its impact. It is argued that the mental health field must now build upon the strong foundations of recovery by integrating a well-established rights-oriented framework. While recovery emphasizes personal growth and hope, a rights-based perspective underscores inherent dignity, autonomy, and opportunities for acceptance and embrace in engaging in valued social roles. The addition of a rights-based framework - community inclusion, to conversations involving recovery, is aligned with the origins of recovery and how it is commonly understood, and also connects the mental health field to the dramatic positive impacts that have emerged from the longstanding centrality of this concept in the broader disability community.

The Arctic polar nights bring extreme environmental conditions characterised by cold and darkness, which challenge the survival of organisms in the Arctic. Additionally, multiple anthropogenic stressors can amplify the pressure on the fragile Arctic ecosystems during this period. Determining how multiple anthropogenic stressors may affect the survival of Arctic life is crucial for ecological risk assessments and management, but this topic is understudied. For the first time, our study investigates the complex interactions of multiple stressors, exploring stressor temporal dynamics and exposure duration on a key Arctic copepod Calanus glacialis during the polar nights. We conducted experiments with pulse (intermittent) and press (continuous) exposure scenarios, involving microplastics, pyrene and warming in a fully factorial design. We observed significant effects on copepod survival, with pronounced impacts during later stressor phases. We also detected two-way interactions between microplastics and pyrene, as well as pyrene and warming, further intensified with the presence of a third stressor. Continuous stressor exposure for 9 days (press-temporal scenario) led to greater reductions in copepod survival compared to the pulse-temporal scenario, characterised by two 3-day stressor exposure phases. Notably, the inclusion of recovery phases, free from stressor exposure, positively influenced copepod survival, highlighting the importance of temporal exposure dynamics. We did not find behaviour to be affected by the different treatments. Our findings underscore the intricate interactions amongst multiple stressors and their temporal patterns in shaping the vulnerability of overwintering Arctic copepods with crucial implications for managing Arctic aquatic ecosystems under the fastest rate of ongoing climate change on earth.

Xenon (Xe) is a commercially valuable element found in trace amounts in the off-gas from used nuclear fuel. Recovering Xe from these streams provides a cost-effective means to increase its supply. However, achieving high-purity Xe recovery is challenging due to the need for separation from nearly identical krypton (Kr). Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of crystalline porous materials, show potential to separate Xe and Kr by utilizing differences in their kinetic diameters, allowing for selective separation. In this work, we study the impact of pore aperture and volume on selective Xe recovery using four robust aluminum MOFs: Al-PMOF, Al-PyrMOF, Al-BMOF and MIL-120, all with conserved structural topology. The pore topology in each MOF is dictated by the dimensions of the tetracarboxylate ligand employed, with larger ligands leading to MOFs with increased pore size and volume. Our experimental and computational investigations revealed that MIL-120 exhibits the highest affinity (21.94 kH(Xe) = 21.94 mmol g-1 bar-1) for Xe among all MOFs, while Al-BMOF demonstrates the highest Xe/Kr selectivity of 14.34. We evaluated the potential of both MIL-120 and Al-BMOF for Xe recovery through breakthrough analysis using a mixture of 400 ppm Xe:40 ppm Kr. Our results indicate that due to its larger pore volume, Al-BMOF captured more Xe than MIL-120, demonstrating superior Xe/Kr separation efficiency.

Demyelination of corticospinal tract neurons contributes to long-term disability after cortical stroke. Nonetheless, poststroke myelin loss has not been addressed as a therapeutic target, so far. We hypothesized that an antibody-mediated inhibition of the Nogo receptor-interacting protein (LINGO-1, leucine-rich repeat and immunoglobulin domain-containing Nogo receptor-interacting protein) may counteract myelin loss, enhance remyelination and axonal growth, and thus promote functional recovery following stroke. To verify this hypothesis, mice were subjected to photothrombotic stroke and received either an antibody against LINGO-1 (n = 19) or a control treatment (n = 18). Behavioral tests were performed to assess the effects of anti-LINGO-1 treatment on the functional recovery. Seven weeks after stroke, immunohistochemical analyses were performed to analyze the effect of anti-LINGO-1 treatment on myelination and axonal loss of corticospinal tract neurons, proliferation of oligodendrocytes and neurogenesis. Anti-LINGO-1 treatment resulted in significantly improved functional recovery (p < 0.0001, repeated measures analysis of variance), and increased neurogenesis in the hippocampus and subventricular zone of the ipsilateral hemisphere (p = 0.0094 and p = 0.032, t-test). Notably, we observed a significant increase in myelin (p = 0.0295, t-test), platelet-derived growth factor receptor α-positive oligodendrocyte precursor cells (p = 0.0356, t-test) and myelinating adenomatous polyposis coli-positive cells within the ipsilateral internal capsule of anti-LINGO-1-treated mice (p = 0.0021, t-test). In conclusion, we identified anti-LINGO-1 as the first neuroregenerative treatment that counteracts poststroke demyelination of corticospinal tract neurons, presumably by increased proliferation of myelin precursor cells, and thereby improves functional recovery. Most importantly, our study presents myelin loss as a novel therapeutic target following stroke.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation emphasizes locomotion. Robotic-assisted gait training (RAGT) is widely used in clinical settings because of its benefits; however, its efficacy remains controversial. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the efficacy of RAGT in patients with SCI. We searched international and domestic databases for articles published until April 18, 2024. The meta-analysis employed a random effects model to determine the effect size as either mean difference (MD) or standardized MD (SMD). Evidence quality was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Twenty-three studies with a total of 690 participants were included in the final analysis. The overall pooled effect size for improvement in activities of daily living was 0.24, with SMD (95% confidence interval [95% CI], 0.04-0.43; GRADE: high) favoring RAGT over conventional rehabilitation. Muscular strength (MD, 0.23; 95% CI, 0.02-0.44; GRADE: high), walking index for SCI (MD, 0.31; 95% CI, 0.07-0.55; GRADE: moderate) and 6 min walk test distance (MD, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.14-0.63; GRADE: moderate) showed significant improvement in the robot group. Subgroup analysis revealed that subacute patients and intervention periods >2 months were more effective. This meta-analysis revealed that RAGT significantly improved activities of daily living, muscular strength, and walking abilities. Additional studies are needed to identify the optimal treatment protocol and specific patient groups for which the protocol is most effective.

The objective of this study was to assess the potential for recovering precious metals from technological solutions using an ion-exchange dynamic method. Precious metals like platinum, palladium, rhodium, and gold are essential materials in various industries such as: automotive, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and jewellery. Due to their limited occurrence in primary sources, there is a growing trend in the market to extract these metals from secondary sources. The research involved conducting sorption and elution tests under different parameters to investigate their impact on the process in dynamic conditions. Additionally, an attempt was made to calculate the operational and total capacity of the resins, which has not been done previously for industrial solutions. The results showed that using Puromet MTS9200, Puromet MTS9850, and Lewatit MonoPlus MP600 resins, the sorption process could be effectively carried out in dynamic conditions with a contact time of 5 min between the technological solution and the resin bed. For optimal elution, the contact time between the eluent solution and the bed should range between 10 and 30 min. To improve rhodium sorption efficiency, it was found that neutralizing the technological solution to a pH of approximately 7 and using Lewatit MonoPlus MP600 resin could be beneficial.

BACKGROUND: Randomised trials are essential to reliably assess medical interventions. Nevertheless, interpretation of such studies, particularly when considering absolute effects, is enhanced by understanding how the trial population may differ from the populations it aims to represent. METHODS: We compared baseline characteristics and mortality of RECOVERY participants recruited in England (n = 38,510) with a reference population hospitalised with COVID-19 in England (n = 346,271) from March 2020 to November 2021. We used linked hospitalisation and mortality data for both cohorts to extract demographics, comorbidity/frailty scores, and crude and age- and sex-adjusted 28-day all-cause mortality. RESULTS: Demographics of RECOVERY participants were broadly similar to the reference population, but RECOVERY participants were younger (mean age [standard deviation]: RECOVERY 62.6 [15.3] vs reference 65.7 [18.5] years) and less frequently female (37% vs 45%). Comorbidity and frailty scores were lower in RECOVERY, but differences were attenuated after age stratification. Age- and sex-adjusted 28-day mortality declined over time but was similar between cohorts across the study period (RECOVERY 23.7% [95% confidence interval: 23.3-24.1%]; vs reference 24.8% [24.6-25.0%]), except during the first pandemic wave in the UK (March-May 2020) when adjusted mortality was lower in RECOVERY. CONCLUSIONS: Adjusted 28-day mortality in RECOVERY was similar to a nationwide reference population of patients admitted with COVID-19 in England during the same period but varied substantially over time in both cohorts. Therefore, the absolute effect estimates from RECOVERY were broadly applicable to the target population at the time but should be interpreted in the light of current mortality estimates. INTRODUCTION: When managing elective and emergency cesarean births in the same operating room, unpredictable variations in the start times of the cesareans can prolong fasting periods. METHODS: The fasting times were retrospectively analyzed on 279 consecutive cesarean births at Helsinki University Women's Hospital, Finland, during January-February 2023. The fasting times were compared between the urgency groups and for elective cesareans according to their scheduled order on the operation list. The primary outcome was the difference in the fasting times for food and drink, while the secondary outcome was fasting for both food >12 h and fluids >4 h. The fasting times were compared by one-way ANOVA and chi-squared test, respectively. Dichotomous data are presented as unadjusted odds ratios (OR with 95% CI). RESULTS: Increasing urgency was associated with shorter fasting times. Fasting times for elective cesareans increased with the scheduled order on the daily list. The mean fasting periods (SD) increased from 10.55 h (SD=1.57) to 14.75 h (SD=2.02) from the first to the third cesarean of the day (p<0.01). The unadjusted odds ratio (95% CI) for fasting of the scheduled cesareans to exceed 12 h for solid foods and 4 h for clear fluids was 6.53 (95% CI: 2.67-15.9, p<0.001), for the third and fourth cesareans compared to the first two cesareans of the day. CONCLUSIONS: When elective and emergency cesareans are performed by the same team, the woman undergoing the third elective surgery of the day should be advised to have breakfast before 5 a.m. at home. While waiting for the operation, a carbohydrate drink should be offered to limit the fast.

Ammonia recovery from wastewater has positive environmental benefits, avoiding eutrophication and reducing production energy consumption, which is one of the most effective ways to manage nutrients in wastewater. Specifically, ammonia recovery by membrane distillation has been gradually adopted due to its excellent separation properties for volatile substances. However, the global optimization of direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) operating parameters to maximize ammonia recovery efficiency (ARE) has not been attempted. In this work, three key operating factors affecting ammonia recovery, i.e., feed ammonia concentration, feed pH, and DCMD running time, were identified from eight factors, by a two-level Plackett-Burman Design (PBD). Subsequently, Box-Behnken design (BBD) under the response surface methodology (RSM) was used to model and optimize the significant operating parameters affecting the recovery of ammonia though DCMD identified by PBD and statistically verified by analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results showed that the model had a high coefficient of determination value (R2 = 0.99), and the interaction between NH4Cl concentration and feed pH had a significant effect on ARE. The optimal operating parameters of DCMD as follows: NH4Cl concentration of 0.46 g/L, feed pH of 10.6, DCMD running time of 11.3 h, and the maximum value of ARE was 98.46%. Under the optimized conditions, ARE reached up to 98.72%, which matched the predicted value and verified the validity and reliability of the model for the optimization of ammonia recovery by DCMD process.

The chemical recovery of a defaced serial number is a common forensic science practice, however it is not understood how proficient experts perform in correctly identifying recovered serial numbers. Understanding the accuracy of experts and how they compare to novices in character recognition can help to establish a baseline for this expertise. In this study an expert-novice comparison assessment was completed involving 118 test plates, each stamped with six randomised alphanumeric characters. The plates were defaced and chemically recovered before being viewed by multiple participants over six time intervals. A total of 3169 character inspections were completed. An assessment of confidence and error rates were calculated for both expert (trained) and novice (untrained) participants. Errors were counted when a participant interpreted a different character to that of the ground truth and believed the result was accurate for reporting. The results showed a similar (2.3 % and 2.4 %) error rate for the cohorts, however a statistical difference in confidence levels was recorded, demonstrating the more conservative nature of experts. This study aims to assist in validating practitioner interpretations, through addressing some forensic science criticisms, such as establishing error rates to routine scientific practices.

Nitrite is one of the most common toxic pollutants in intensive aquaculture and is harmful to aquatic animals. Recovery mechanisms post exposure to nitrite in shrimp have rarely been investigated. This study focuses on the effect of nitrite exposure and post-exposure recovery on the histological and physiological aspects of Litopenaeus vannamei and utilizes transcriptome sequencing to analyze the molecular mechanisms of adaptation to nitrite exposure. The results showed that histopathological damage to the hepatopancreas and gills caused by short-term nitrite exposure resolved with recovery. The total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) of shrimp were significantly reduced during nitrite exposure and returned to the control level after recovery, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were opposite to them. Restoration of the antioxidant system after exposure mitigated oxidative damage. Nitrite exposure results in reduced activity of the immuno-enzymes acid phosphatase (ACP) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP), which can be recovered to the control level. L. vannamei can adapt to nitrite exposure by regulating Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) activity. Transcriptome analysis revealed that activation of glutathione metabolism and peroxisomal pathways facilitated the mitigation of oxidative damage in L. vannamei during the recovery period. Excessive oxidative damage activates the apoptosis and p53 pathways. Additionally, Sestrin2 and STEAP4 may have a positive effect on recovery in shrimp. These results provide evidence for the damage caused by nitrite exposure and the recovery ability of L. vannamei. This study can complement the knowledge of the mechanisms of adaptation and recovery of shrimp under nitrite exposure.

BACKGROUND: Day surgery for unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR) could potentially reduce hospital costs. We aimed to measure the impact of introducing a day surgery UKR pathway on mean length of stay (LOS) and costs for the UK NHS, compared to an accelerated inpatient pathway. Secondly, the study aimed to compare the magnitude of costs using three costing approaches: top-down costing; simple micro-costing; and real-world costing. METHODS: We conducted an observational, before-and-after study of 2,111 UKR patients at one NHS hospital: 1,094 patients followed the day surgery pathway between September 2017 and February 2020; and 1,017 patients followed the accelerated inpatient pathway between September 2013 and February 2016. Top-down costs were estimated using Average NHS Costs. Simple micro-costing used the cost per bed-day. Real-world costs for this centre were estimated by costing actual changes in staffing levels. RESULTS: 532 (48.5%) patients in the day surgery pathway were discharged on the day of surgery compared with 36 (3.5%) patients in the accelerated inpatient pathway. The day surgery pathway reduced the mean LOS by 2.2 (95% CI: 1.81, 2.53) nights and was associated with an 18% decrease in Average NHS Costs (p < 0.001). Mean savings were £1,429 per patient with the Average NHS Costs approach, £905 per patient with the micro-costing approach, and £577 per patient with the "real-world" costing approach. Overall, moving NHS UKR surgeries to a day surgery pathway could save the NHS £8,659,740 per year. CONCLUSION: Day surgery for UKR could produce substantial cost savings for hospitals and the NHS.

OBJECTIVE: Surviving physical trauma can have a large impact on one's daily life. Patients are at increased risk for poor physical health, psychological complaints, and problems in role functioning - which is often experienced simultaneously. The present study explores the interconnectedness of physical, psychological, and role functioning during the first two years post-injury, both cross-sectionally and longitudinally from a network perspective. METHODS: 3785 trauma patients (Mage = 64.2 years, SDage = 18.9 years, 50.5% female) completed questionnaires on physical, psychological, and role functioning across six measurement occasions during the first two years post-injury. The Injury Severity Score (ISS) was retrieved from the local trauma registry. Mixed graphical network models and cross-lagged network models were estimated to examine which items of recovery played a central role and were mostly related to other items in cross-sectional and longitudinal networks respectively. RESULTS: The cross-sectional networks showed especially strong interconnections between impairments of physical and role functioning and also within post-traumatic stress symptoms. The longitudinal networks extended these results by showing that pain, impaired mobility, limitations in self-care, anxiety/depressive symptoms, and several post-traumatic stress symptoms were strong predictors for impairments in functioning at later stages of recovery. CONCLUSION: Our findings showed that impairments in physical, psychological, and role functioning experienced by trauma patients are largely intertwined across the two years following injury. Monitoring physical impairments and psychological complaints early in recovery might help to more promptly provide the best fitting aftercare for trauma patients, which can improve recovery on the long-term.

Fire-prone landscapes experience frequent fires, disrupting above-ground biomass and altering below-ground soil nutrient availability. Augmentation of leaf nutrients or leaf water balance can both reduce limitations to photosynthesis and facilitate post-fire recovery in plants. These modes of fire responses are often studied separately and hence rarely compared. We hypothesised that under severe burning, woody plants of a coastal scrub ecosystem would have higher rates of photosynthesis (Anet) than in unburned areas due to a transient release from leaf nutrient and water limitations, facilitating biomass recovery post-burn. To compare these fire recovery mechanisms in regrowing plants, we measured leaf gas exchange, leaf and soil N and P concentrations, and plant stomatal limitations in Australian native coastal scrub species across a burn sequence of sites at one year after severe fi, seven years following a light controlled fire, and decades after any fire at North Head, Sydney, Australia. Recent burning stimulated increases in Anet by 20% over unburned trees and across three tree species. These species showed increases in total leaf N and P as a result of burning of 28% and 50% for these macronutrients, respectively, across the three species. The boost in leaf N and P and stimulated leaf biochemical capacity for photosynthesis, alongside species-specific gs increases, together contributed to increased photosynthetic rates after burning compared to the long-unburned area. Photosynthetic stimulation after burning occurred due to increases in nutrient concentrations in leaves, particularly nitrogen, as well as stomatal opening for some species. The findings suggest that changes in species photosynthesis and growth with increased future fire intensity or frequency may be facilitated by changes in leaf physiology after burning. On this basis, species dominance during regrowth depends on nutrient and water availability during post-fire recovery.

This study aimed to examine the effect of nonsleep deep rest (NSDR) on physical and cognitive performance, as well as sleepiness, acute readiness, recovery, stress, and mood state in physically active participants. A total of 65 physically active participants (42 male, 23 female) were randomly assigned into two groups: an experimental group (NSDR, n = 34), in which participants completed a 10-min NSDR intervention, and a control group (CON, n = 31), whereby participants sat passively for 10 min. Testing measures were assessed immediately pre and 10 min post each condition and comprised completing a hand grip strength dynamometer test and a countermovement jump test on force plates, cognitive function measures via a psychomotor vigilance task (PVT-B), and a Simon task test, along with four questionnaires to assess sleep, recovery, and mood state. A significant Group × Time interaction favored the NSDR condition for handgrip strength, median reaction time during the PVT-B, and accuracy percentage during the Simon task. Questionnaire responses demonstrated NSDR to be associated with significant benefits to physical readiness, emotional balance, overall recovery, negative emotional state, overall stress, and tension in comparison to CON (p < .05). The NSDR intervention could be a valuable strategy for acutely enhancing overall well-being and readiness.
